The first neutrinos in nature ever detected by man were "caught" in a unique laboratory some 3 km (over 2 miles) underground in one of the world's deepest mine shafts at East Rand Proprietary Mines (ERPM), Boksburg. Only 100 m from where gold is being mined from the rock face a small team of South African and American physicists work on one of the most fascinating and important fundamental research projects that is currently exciting the imagination of the scientific world. Neutrinos are sub-atomic particles just as are protons, neutrons and electrons, but they are unique in that they have neither electric charge nor mass. Cosmic neutrinos travel at the speed of light and penetrate stars and planets. Even a million kilometres of solid lead would not provide a satisfactory shield against them. Stars are believed to "burn" by means of nuclear reactions which produce enormous fluxes of neutrinos. The sun, for example, illuminates the earth with visible light, but also bathes it with neutrinos. After World War II, two American physicists, Profs Frederick Reines and Clyde Cowan, experimenting at a large nuclear reactor, succeeded in obtaining direct evidence of the existence of the laboratory-produced neutrino. It then became very important to establish whether neutrinos also existed in nature. This knowledge would lead to a greater understanding of the forces of nuclear physics, of the behaviour of nuclear particles and, indeed, is also relevant to astrophysics. From the start it was clear that the search for "natural" neutrinos would be difficult. Questions which arose were- * how could they be traced if they were without mass or electric charge? * how could other nuclear particles be screened off? * could these not be wrongly detected, or even prevent accurate detection of neutrinos? Neutrinos were known to be produced along with charged particles, by the reaction of primary cosmic rays with the constituents of the atmosphere. It was also known that when the neutrinos collided with matter, they themselves produced the same type of charged particle which could be detected if the unwanted charged particles from the atmosphere could be screened off. What was needed, therefore, was a laboratory where the particles produced in the atmosphere could be screened out, yet which would receive and detect the particles produced by the neutrons' collision with the matter (solid rock) in the vicinity of the laboratory. This meant that scientists either had to build a laboratory with an enormously thick lead shield for their detection work. . . or they could go as near as possible to the centre of the earth where only charged nuclear particles of the very highest energies could penetrate. ERPM was clearly the most suitable place in the world where so effective a "neutrino trap" could be set. Under more than 3 000 m of solid rock the apparatus for detecting neutrinos is well shielded against unwanted nuclear particles produced in the cosmic radiation which can reach the laboratory only in a steeply vertical trajectory. Other particles are easily stopped by the great thickness of rock. The air-conditioned laboratory is at one end of a 150 m long tunnel, 2,5 m high and wide, blasted from the rock. The electronic recording equipment is housed here, while the rest of the tunnel is filled with the detection system. When a charged particle passes through a detector element, it produces a minute flash of light which is recorded and which triggers a flash-tube array. This then defines the trajectory of the charged particle, which is also recorded on film for analysis. So far 82 neutrinos have been detected, 50 at the present level and 32 at a higher level, and the findings have borne out the physicists' theoretical expectations. In this joint project Profs Reines, J. P. F. Sellschop, Director of the Witwatersrand University's Nuclear Research Unit and M. F. Crouch of the Case-Western Reserve University of Ohio are the Chief Investigators. This unique endeavour has been made possible by financial support from the US Atomic Energy Commission, the University of the Witwatersrand and the Chamber of Mines of South Africa, as well as by the cooperation of the management and men of ERPM.

In 1904 it was reconstituted as the Chemical Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa and in 1956 it became the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The objects of the Institute are to advance the science and practice of mining and metallurgy, to afford opportunities for the interchange and recording of knowledge of mining and metallurgy and to ensure high standards of professional conduct and competence. Membership benefits include monthly issues of the Journal of the Institute, monthly General Meetings at which papers are read, symposia, excursions to mining and industrial concerns and the use of club facilities at Kelvin House. Graduate Members shall be not less than 21 years of age and shall be university graduates in pure or applied science, or have completed co-ordinated courses of study in pure or applied science of at least three years' duration at an approved university or institution. "This paper provides a progress update on three tapblock monitoring technologies that Hatch has been developing with our clients for non-ferrous smelting furnaces.The Tapblock Diagnostic System (TDS) is an advanced on-line monitoring system that uses temperature data along with embedded thermal model results to evaluate the condition of a tapblock over its campaign life. Hatch recently installed a second Tapblock Diagnostic System, some details of which are provided in this paper.The Tap-hole Acoustic Monitoring (TAM) system is installed on water-cooled copper tapblocks and uses the noise from the tapping channel to provide a qualitative indication of wear and deterioration of the tapping channel refractory. In addition, TAM can be used to monitor drilling and lancing performance, and potentially could also be used in the future as a guide for automatic drilling and lancing systems (Sadri et al., 2008).The third technology is the use of fibre optic sensors to measure temperature on the hot face and in the tapping channel of a tapblock. Fibre optic technology allows installation of numerous sensors in key locations where they are very sensitive to tapblock condition and also provide more extensive spatial coverage than is possible with traditional instruments. This paper provides an update on our efforts to address issues with premature failure of the sensor cables due to corrosion, and also converting the vast amount of data from the sensor cable into information that can be used by furnace operators."

At Tapira Mine (Tapira/MG/ Brazil), the largest phosphate concentrate producer in Brazil, the mining is fully mechanized and carried out using open pit mining. This work presents a review of the sampling protocol used for short term mine planning at different stages. Sampling is carried out in two steps. Firstly, diamond drill cores are sampled at 50 x50 x5 metre pattern. Fosfertil analyses grades of P2O5, Fe2O3, CaO, MgO, SiO2 and TiO2 plus geological logging. This information feeds the long term block model. Secondly, drill cuttings are collected at the mining faces released for blasting. The drilling pattern is staggered and when blasting is not necessary, a drill hole is made centered in the block area (25 x 25 x 5 m). The primary samples have mass approximately 60 kg and the same chemical parameters are analysed. Metallurgical and mass recovery tests are performed as well. These samples are used to build the short term block model. At the final stage, the short term mine planning model is used to build a stockpile blending model which is simulated using a spreadsheet to match the goals established by the process plant.

Rock mass damage induced by mining increases the fracture frequency and joint aperture width in the pit walls and rock mass behind open pit mine slopes. The depth and intensity of this mechanical damage relative to the pre-mining state is not well understood and yet is a major factor in the development of slope stability models and operational guidelines. The induced damage can be partitioned into domains or zones. The blast damage zone is essentially a ‘free flow’ rock mass volume, which transitions quite rapidly into the excavation damage zone, which extends beyond that. In both zones, transient high in situ water pressures are often linked to unstable slope conditions. Whereas rock damage can enhance passive depressurisation in the rock mass, high infiltration rates on the other hand, as one could expect during rainstorm events, will decrease slope stability within the dilated pit rock mass, especially in the blast damage zone-excavation damage zone, by increasing pore pressures for short periods of time. Ice jacking and freshet are additional factors to consider in (sub) arctic environments and can be exacerbated by unfavorable rock fabric orientation. On a local scale, brittle deformation damage zones, in the form of faults, can contribute to slope instability, or enhanced stability because of slope depressurisation, depending on their location and orientation relative to the pit shape and the water sources. In this study, the shapes of the damage zones and their anticipated impact on infiltration and/or passive depressurisation are considered for different pit morphologies, rock mass conditions, in situ stress, and hydrogeological settings. Some unusual hydrological situations, like mining towards rivers and lakes and the potential effects on pore pressures, are also considered. This investigation has resulted in the development of a method to adjust initial hydraulic conductivity values used to estimate transient pore pressure conditions found in rock masses exposed in different pit morphologies and stress regimes as well as discontinuities’ orientation relative to open faces within the open pit mine. The changes in K values and pore pressures can then be used to determine hydrogeological influence more accurately on future pit slope stability.

High-rate floc-blanket clarification of gold pregnant rotary filtrate was introduced at the Vaal Reefs South gold plant of the Anglo American Corporation during February 1978. A. daily 12 000 to 15 000 t of filtrate, with an average suspended-solids concentration of 350 mg/I, is continuously clarified to a concentration of less than 2S mg/I of suspended solids in a modified plant pachuca (10 m in diameter) at throughput rates of 7,7 to 8,5 ma/m2.h by the addition of 5 g/t of ferric chloride inorganic coagulant and 0,2 g/t of Superfloc NI00 flocculant. The pachuca overflow is then clarified further in seven Stellar candle pressure filters of 54,S m2 surface area to under 5 mg/I of suspended solids. The combined clarification cost when the hopper clarifier is used in conjunction with the Stellar filters is R0,0032 per ton of liquid treated, which is approximately 60 per cent lower than the cost of Stellar filtration on its own. The savings are mainly due to the reduced use of filter pre-coat, the consumption of which has dropped by 70 per cent since the introduction of hopper clarification.

For many years, mine-impacted water has been regarded as a problem and linked to long-term environmental liabilities. However, this water can be a renewable and a sustainable resource, provided that it is managed in a responsible and sensible manner. South Africa’s National Water Resource Strategy (NWRS, 2013) considers water that can be used to contribute to economic activity to be a water resource. Although all water resources are considered as belonging to the State, government does not appear to have meaningfully explored the use of mineimpacted water to contribute to the country’s economic activity. Africa is blessed with more sunshine than anywhere else, apart from Australia, yet we see no rollout of vast quantities of solar panels to ensure every African family has access to affordable power. This suggests that governments are incapable of managing such a free resource. At the same time, apart from the equatorial areas, water is a seriously constrained resource and yet we expect the same entities to manage a commodity none of us can live without. This paper explores the conversion of mine-impacted water from waste to a resource and how the inclusion of other stakeholders (such as water users, landowners, and ordinary South Africans) could benefit the process.

DECEMBER, 1971 The Wanders Club, Johannesburg Sunday, 9th April, to Friday, 14th April, 1972 The Tenth Symposium which is the first ever held outside the North American continent is being organised by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (with the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and the South African Council for Automation and Computation), in collaboration with the previous co-sponsors. '" The programme includes over 60 papers from thirteen different countries. The objective of this symposium is to pool experience and knowledge and to discuss new and potential developments for the planning and control of mineral projects. Skorpion Zinc is located 25 km north-west of the small settlement of Rosh Pinah in southern Namibia. Commissioned in early 2003, Skorpion Zinc became the first mine-to-metal operation to commercially apply a purely hydrometallurgical process route to exploit a zinc oxide orebody. The novel technology, known as The Modified ZincexTM Process patented by Tecnicas Reunidas, comprises sulphuric acid atmospheric leaching, zinc solvent extraction (SX) and electrowinning (EW) to produce London metal exchange (LME) Special high grade (SHG) zinc. Forming the core of the process, the SX step has thrived in its role as a barrier to impurities and also in the upgrading of the pregnant liquor solution (PLS), converting it into a loaded electrolyte (LE) sufficiently rich and pure for EW. Against this successful run, a number of challenges have, however, been encountered in SX due the emergence of upset conditions largely emanating from upstream processes. This paper outlines some of the major deviations that have beset the SX process in its first five years of continuous operation. Impurity excursions, temperature depressions, changes in phase continuity, excess aqueous entrainment, the effect of colloidal silica and the accumulation of rare earth elements on the organic phase will be discussed in detail. AngloGold Ashanti?s Obuasi Mine, in Ashanti Province, Ghana, operates a plant utilizing bacterial oxidation technology. The mineralization consists predominately of arsenopyrite with gold associated in the sulphides. The plant was commissioned in 1994, at that time was the largest BIOX® plant in the world, and has been operated by AngloGold Ashanti since 2004. The constraints identified in the plantwere the flotation capacity, BIOX® feed size and disruptions to the BIOX® process. This paper focuses on the practical steps that were followed in order to increase the recovery of the plant. The original plant design was based on a head grade of 10 g/t and an overall recovery of 86.5%. In 2007 the plant was operating at an overall recovery of 79.2% at a head grade of 5.6 g/t and this has improved to 80.6% at a head grade of 5.8 g/t during the last quarter of 2008. Additional improvement to 81.5% are expected by the end of April 2009. Improvements that have been implemented include: ?Replacement of the regrind mill ?Installation of additional float capacity ?Installation of a scavenging circuit ?Installation of a complete water treatment plant. In addition we have focused on the effect of the water circuit on the BIOX® process and the steps involved in correcting this problem. The water circuit was originally designed as an open circuit and through environmental considerations the circuit was closed towards the end of 2007. The bacteria in the BIOX® are particularly sensitive to cyanide and cannot tolerate levels above 0.05ppm (free cyanide), this required extensive modifications to the water circuit. The plant improvement project is ongoing and the current scope of work should be complete by the end of April 2009. Further research and development work is being planned, which includes a ?white rot bacteria? that can consume the preg-robbing carbon and oxidize the sulphide in a single pass.

Electrokinetic dewatering of kimberlite slime under constant direct curents of 0,5 to 2 A and dewatering under constant applied potentia Is of 16,5 to 46,5 V are considered. The combined efects of electrophoresis and the addition of 8,3 x 10-3 M Mg2+ ions on the one hand, and 1 to 10 p.p.m. of the anionic polyacrylamide flocculant Praestol 2935 on the other, were investigated in a 3-litre Perspex electrophoretic cel. .The electro-osmotic dewatering experiments were conducted in a 3-litre Perspex electro-osmotic cel at various electrode spacings, as well as with a moving anode (top electrode). During electrophoretic dewatering, the zeta potential of the kimberlite particles did not change significantly, whereas the pH and temperature showed marked increases with time. The addition of Praestol 2935 enhanced the setling of the sludge bed owing to the additional effect of flocculation. The addition of electrolyte Mg (CIO4)2 retarded the separation process, partly as a result of gel formation in the slurry. During the electro-osmotic experiments, the rate of dewatering was found to be approximately proportional to the applied constant direct current, and to be independent of the electrode spacing. In general, electro-osmotic dewatering seemed to be more energy-efficient than electrophoretic dewatering.

"In platinum group metals (PGMs) smelting, the slag-to-matte ratios are very high (approximately 4:1 to 9:1). The slag temperature therefore has a strong influence on matte temperature, which is a continual concern due to the low matte melting temperature and its resultant high superheat. Maintaining a stable slag temperature is therefore a critical safety and operational issue. This project aims to improve the understanding of the slag bath temperature drivers so that a more effective slag bath temperature control strategy can be implemented.With the aim of developing a multiphysics model of the furnace, extensive data analysis was performed to develop an in-depth understanding of the process before the start of modelling work. In this work, the effect of fluctuating furnace feed composition on slag temperature was examined. The results are based on equilibrium calculations using FactSage, implemented with ChemApp.A method was developed, using an equilibrium calculation at 25°C, to convert the available chemical assays to approximate mineralogical assays in order to determine the feed enthalpies. Actual 2013 furnace feed data was used and the average specific energy requirement to produce slag and matte at 1600°C was calculated to be 671 kWh/t concentrate. The furnace energy input was then kept constant, and it was found that the slag temperature varies significantly as a function of the feed composition. These results were compared to actual slag temperatures measured on site. It was found that close management of the furnace energy balance is important for maintaining a stable slag temperature."

"In previous work by the authors, it was established that additions of 0.2 at.% Ru to an Fe-40 at.% Al alloy improved the corrosion and oxidation resistance of the alloy. The alloy was produced by mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering and the work showed that nonequilibrium processing was able to significantly refine the grain size of the material. The sintered material had a higher hardness than the as-cast material and the change in grain size did not significantly affect the oxidation and corrosion. In the present research, the mechanically alloyed powder was coated onto a mild steel substrate using cold-spray coating at a gas pressure of 10 bar and a temperature of 500°C. The coatings were found to be 5–10 um thick, although thicknesses of up to 30 um were observed. The coated materials were subjected to oxidation and corrosion tests to determine the effectiveness of the coating in increasing the oxidation and corrosion resistance of mild steel. This was done to determine the effectiveness of cold-spray coating as a technique to coat these mechanically alloyed powders. IntroductionPrevious work conducted by Mintek (Couperthwaite et al., 2013, 2015) investigated the effect of precious metal additions on the structure, oxidation and corrosion properties of an Fe-40 at.% Al (Fe- Al) alloy. Initial work determined that additions of more than 0.5 at.% precious metal did not improve the oxidation and corrosion properties of the materials and in some cases even decreased the resistance to corrosion. Further work identified Pt and Ru as beneficial additions to the FeAl alloy. Four alloys were then produced by mechanical alloying and sintering (FeAl–0.2 at.% Pd, FeAl–0.2 at.% Ru, FeAl–0.5 at.% Ag, FeAl–0.5 at.% Pt). These alloys were all successfully produced by melting and casting and mechanical alloying sintering and it was found that the nonequilibrium processing greatly decreased the grain size of the materials compared to the ascast materials. It was found that the additions of Ru and Pt were still the most beneficial to the oxidation and corrosion properties, with Ru being considered the most beneficial."

The formula developed by Salamon and Munro in 1967 has been used for the past 22 years in the design of bord-and-pillar workings in South African collieries. This paper re-assesses the formula In the light of Its past performance and examines the effect of mining method on coal-pillar strength. An account is given of the extension of the formula so that it can be applied beyond the empirical range for which it was derived, and the advantages of the extended formula (the squat-pillar formula) are described.

This paper reports on what appears to be the first discovery of prehistoric mica-schist mining in southern 4frica. The mine concerned was found in a location very rich in rock art that is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Kalahari. The authors conclude that the oval pieces of mica schist that were found at the mine site were used by Khoisan peoples to scrape fatty tissue from hides that were to be cured. Radiocarbon datings seem to indicate that such ovals were used for at least 20 000 years.
