The catalytic converter industry is composed largely of global multinational manufacturers who supply to vehicle manufacturers (original equipment manufacturers ? OEMs) from facilities strategically located internationally, including plants in South Africa. The South African catalytic converter production facilities were established at the request of the OEMs and commenced manufacture in the early 1990s. This near 100 per cent export focused industry exists in South Africa because of the incentives offered by the Motor Industry Development Programme (MIDP), which ultimately provide the OEM with import duty rebates. The South African catalytic converter industry is a complex vertically-integrated supply chain with a local content in excess of 85 per cent, substantially more than any other exported automotive component. The industry remains one of the very few downstream manufacturing industries where South Africa has a significant global footprint. This is even more important when it is considered that this industry is the key end-user for two of South Africa?s most important mineral resources, namely platinum group metals (PGMs) and chromium, and is in an industry which will see massive global growth as the developing nations of the BRICs grow their auto industries. In over 15 years of existence in South Africa, the catalytic converter industry has achieved remarkable growth, averaging compound growth in the region of 14 per cent per annum. The industry is the highest contributor to automotive component export revenue. South Africa holds >8 per cent% of global PGM reserves. During 2011, South Africa supplied 59 per cent, 29 per cent, and 72 per cent of the global demand for platinum, palladium, and rhodium respectively, as well as over 50 per cent of the global chromium demand. Global autocatalyst production remains the largest consumer of PGMs, and South Africa alone beneficiated 15 per cent of locally mined PGMs in the production of catalytic converters ? all is converted from PGM sponge (powdered metal) into PGM solutions for coating onto catalysts. Beneficiation of PGMs also takes place via the production of jewellery and electronic goods; but compared to catalytic converters, this volume is negligible. The industry is also the largest consumer of locally produced stainless steel (>50 000 t/a), exceeding 38 per cent of local consumption. The industry is a substantial generator of highly skilled employment, with over 5 000 direct jobs (excluding OEMs and stainless steel manufacture) and an estimated more than 30 000 indirect jobs resulting from upstream and side-stream suppliers. The industry places a high focus on skills transfer and development, with all companies providing high-tech training and education both locally and overseas. The industry has invested in excess of R5 billion in plant, equipment, people development, and process development over the last 15 years to support transfer of production and new technologies to South Africa. This has resulted in significant skills development in the support industries as well as within the catalytic converter industry. The current projections for local PGM beneficiation via catalytic converters reflect a downward trend as a result of production being moved to other global locations due to uncertainty around changes to government incentive programmes. The industry is currently capacitated to support 23.7 million units per annum. During 2011 it utilized about 70 per cent of this capacity, but forecast projections suggest that this will be at 46 per cent of this level by 2016. At full capacity the industry would represent 19 per cent of global autocatalyst production compared with the current 13 per cent in 2011. The industry believes that there is potential to make South Africa the preferred location for catalytic converters worldwide, given suitable support from the mines and Government.

GEOSCANs on belt analysers have been widely utilised in iron ore for nearly two decades. Since the first installations in 2003, the availability of accurate and reliable grade data has become standardised across iron ore mines in the Northern Cape, where various streams are monitored continuously to ensure the optimal functioning of plants. Assmang Khumani has been at the forefront of technology adoption and has implemented 19 GEOSCANs at various locations throughout the plant, monitoring run-of-mine, stockyard feed, beneficiation plant feeds, and products. Over the years, collaborative advances in the technology have allowed for numerous benefits and gains to be made. In recent times, there has been a concerted effort on the development of analysis for phosphorus in the material flows, and based on Scantech's experience in the phosphate industry, this element has now been calibrated to achieve statistically acceptable and repeatable accuracies for real time analysis of this element on many of Khumani's GEOSCAN analysers. This paper provides an overview of GEOSCAN use at Khumani, while focusing on the development of phosphorus analysis. A case study of analysis results is presented for a range of analysers that have been calibrated for this element, as well as a discussion on the benefits obtained as a result of this analysis. Lightning has been observed in dust clouds following open-pit blasting. It is proposed that the occurrence of this phenomenon is related to the physical composition and characterization of the mineral fines that comprise the bulk of the dust cloud. Silicate minerals, which are susceptible to fine fracturing during blasting, generate the initial charge. This is further enhanced by collisions and friction during the turbulent upcast in the post-blast dust cloud. Varying size fractions result in different rates at which these particles drop out of suspension and create a secondary temperature gradient. This results in the creation of two charged zones and increases the potential of developing a discharge in the form of lightning. The ideal prevailing meteorological conditions need to be windless to minimize the effect of particle dissipation and have sufficient moisture toenhance the potential of generating lightning.

"SynopsisThe development of plasma technology at Necsa started in the early 1980s, when the applicability of high-temperature plasmas in the nuclear fuel cycle was investigated. Since 1995, this plasma expertise has expanded to other industrial applications, for example mineral beneficiation, nanotechnology, fluorocarbon production and waste treatment, all of which are also of relevance to the nuclear industry.Necsa has demonstrated the manufacture of plasma-dissociated zircon, zirconium metal powder, carbon nanotubes, silicon carbide (SiC), zirconium carbide (ZrC) and boron carbide (B4C) at the laboratory and pilot plant scale. These materials are commonly used in the nuclear industry. Zirconium alloys are used as fuel cladding material for nuclear fuel assemblies.Necsa manufactured the monomer tetrafluoroethylene (TFE), using 150 and 450 kW DC plasma systems, from which the polymer polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was synthesized for use in filters and as seals in nuclear plants. With the nuclear renaissance at hand, it was demonstrated that plasma technology can be used to produce hydrofluoric acid (HF), which is used in the manufacture of fluorine gas (F2) for the production of uranium hexafluoride (UF6) directly from the mineral calcium fluoride (CaF2) without the use of sulphuric acid as in the conventional process. The recovery of valuable uranium from nuclear waste such as filters, oils, and solids with plasma processes will also be discussed. The destruction of low-level nuclear waste by a plasma gasification system can reduce the volume of this waste by several orders in magnitude, resulting in huge savings in the storage costs. Another product of plasma technology is the encapsulation process for nuclear waste and the production of vitrified product, which could be used as filler material for medium-level nuclear waste.IntroductionDuring the 1980s, a plasma research and development programme was launched at the erstwhile Uranium Enrichment Corporation of South Africa (UCOR) at Valindaba outside Pretoria. The main purpose of this programme was to develop alternative and more economical processes for the processing and manufacturing of uranium compounds used in the nuclear fuel cycle. The conversion of UO2 (as received from uranium mines) to UF6, which is needed for enrichment, conventionally involves several laborious, expensive, chemical processing steps. Plasma processes can eliminate several of the intermediate steps. Enriched UF6 is converted to UO2, which is pressed into pellets that are used in nuclear power plants. Plasma technology could also be used in a modified and optimized conversion process."

There are two main types of densifying cyclones currently available in the market, namely polyeurethane (PU) and ceramic. The PU densifying cyclones are currently used throughout the Grootegeluk complex and coal beneficiation in general. It has been identified that PU densifiers wear relatively fast depending on the operating pressure and need to be replaced frequently as a result. The motivation for this paper is to achieve an increase in the densifying cyclone lifetime through less wear and an increase in efficiency resulting in the ability to build higher relative densities (RD) more quickly. This will allow for a reduction in downtimes due to replacing densifying cyclones as well as building RD and a reduction in the operating costs associated with replacing worn densifying cyclones. Some of the major findings of the study indicated that the ceramic cyclone theoretically undergoes less wear than the PU cyclone, but since wear is application-specific and was evaluated, the wear on the polyurethane cyclone was found to be minimal. The RD differential is higher on the PU cyclones than the ceramic cyclones, showing that the PU cyclones perform better in a densifying application. This is the first test conducted on this application and type of cyclones. It should therefore be noted that having the PU cyclone significantly outperform the ceramic cyclone was not expected, due to the only change being the material of construction. This is an indication to take the material of construction into account when selecting cyclones as it can have a significant impact on the cyclone performance in specific applications. Gas samples were taken from a wide range of target areas on dumps arising from coal mining activities. Some of the dumps had largely burned out, some were still burning, some were in the process of rehabilitation, and on others rehabilitation was essentially complete. It was found that rehabilitation was very effective in reducing emissions to tolerable levels. Even incomplete rehabilitation reduced the CO2 emissions to less than about 1 kg/m2/a, whereas some unrehabilitated areas showed emissions of over 100 kg/m2/a. Some areas where there was active combustion taking place were also sampled, and they showed as much as 7 000 kg/m2/a, but the areas concerned were very small and their total contribution accordingly low. Analyses were also made for SOx, NOx, NH3, and CH4, but these were generally (and unexpectedly) at very low levels. The mines sampled represented 53 per cent of all surface coal mining activity. Accordingly the estimated total emissions were scaled up, to arrive at estimates of 1950 000 ± 350 000 t/a C02, 2040 ± 580 t/a SOx, 306 ± 85t/a NOx, and 31 ± 9 t/a NH3 for all surface mines. Methane was detected only from burning coal, and due to the difficulty in sampling, no reliable estimate could be made of these methane emissions.

Tata Steel Limited which is Asia?s first and India?s largest integrated private sector steel company, as part of its vision to grow in related industries is also undertaking the Titania project. The project will involve mining, separation of ilmenite and other valuable minerals from the inland heavy mineral sands deposit in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The raw material will be beneficiated to synthetic rutile, titanium dioxide pigment and ultimately to titanium metal. The recently concluded feasibility study revealed that the deposit under consideration has 10.4%of total heavy mineral content and 15.2% slimes of the size below 63 µm, over an average sand thickness of 6.9 metres. The presence of about 15% slimes in ROM sand coupled with scarcity of water at the project site complicates the slimes handling/disposal system, requiring the development of an innovative, efficient and effective system for disposal of slimes. Mineral characteristics of slimes revealed the presence of kaolinite clay, which poses its own challenges in thickening/dewatering of slimes. This paper outlines the detailed studies conducted, including slime characterization, settling and thickening characteristics, and ge-technical studies to arrive at an efficient and effective slime handling/disposal system, with a view to plant saplings on the mined-out reclaimed land with species typically suitable to that environment.

Lifelong development of skills and knowledge of mining professionals has been recognised worldwide as a challenge for the development of a sustainable mining sector. Practical training and learning over the mine value chain are among the key components of this knowledge building. However, the number of available mining sites for continuous education in real-life conditions is limited; also the specifications for practical training are not clearly defined. The project MINETRAIN was developed to (i) evaluate the potential of the shortly-closing Pyhäsalmi Mine, in Finland, as an educational and training underground facility, and thus, prolong the utility of the existing modern mine site, and to (ii) develop and test practical training programs for mining and mining industry related professionals. Pyhäsalmi facilities enable training among all disciplines related to the overall mine value chain and hence, the project has potential in providing education for sustainable management of any phase of mining operations. The philosophy underpinning the MINETRAIN approach to mining activities is to assist the clients in minimising the technical and financial risks by providing a competitive and skilled personnel asset while optimising the value drivers in their operations. As a first major step of the project, a pilot training course, involving basic-level online theory and hands-on training at the Pyhäsalmi mine site, was undertaken in summer 2019. Feedback from the pilot test group of mining professionals has proved to be very positive. The comments from the participants strongly emphasised the added value of the practical onsite training for improved understanding in the large scale picture of mining on the entire value chain. As a second phase of the project, a new test course was launched in June 2020. The second MINETRAIN course focuses on new technologies and digitisation in mining. In a FeNi electric arc furnace, the physical properties of the slag (chemistry, viscosity, liquid/solid/gas ratio) are of crucial importance in controlling the efficiency of the process. In this paper, we studied the slag crystallised on the walls of a semi-industrial furnace (freeze-lining), the slag rising through the burden during foaming phenomena, and the casted slag. The freeze-lining is the layer of oxides that crystallises on the refractory wall of a furnace, protecting it from chemical and mechanical aggression. It records changes in furnace conditions (slag chemistry, temperature, oxygen fugacity), which makes it possible to observe the impact of these elements. In the high reduction test, the freezing lining is composed of magnesian olivine. Switching to a low reduction process increases the Fe content of the olivine and causes orthopyroxene to appear, making the freeze-lining mechanically and thermally weak. Thermal incidents in the furnace cause significant slag foaming. This foaming is produced by a massive crystallisation of the olivine (due to the drop in temperature), and inducing an exponential increase in viscosity, preventing the free circulation of gases. These foaming episodes are also recorded in the freeze lining and form layers rich in gas bubbles, and therefore mechanically fragile. The slag casted and cooled in a ladle allows the first steps of slag crystallisation to be studied. Olivine is the liquidus phase, with a magnesium-rich core and an iron-enriched rim, contemporaneous with the orthopyroxene phase. The habitus of these phases is very similar to that found in komatiites for the same minerals. FeNi slag is therefore an industrial analogue that is easy to study and compare to komatiites. "Fragment size distributions play an important part in the design and planning of block cave mining operations. Though several methods have been proposed for estimating fragment size distributions in advance of mining, the calibration of these estimating procedures to field measurements has been a challenge. The Block Size Estimator (BSE) program was developed for providing an assessment of primary fragmentation expected in a block cave mine using drill-core piece length data and joint characteristics from the exploration and geotechnical evaluation programmes. In order to validate the results from the BSE program, the drill-core piece length data and the joint characteristics in different rock types from the DOZ block cave mine in Indonesia were used to help generate fragment size distributions in different areas of the mine. The predicted fragment size distributions were compared with the fragmentation observed at the drawpoints during operation of the mine.This paper presents the details of the validation of the fragment size estimates by the BSE program using fragment size distribution data from the drawpoints at the extraction level at the DOZ block cave mine, and the challenges encountered in developing reasonable correlations between the estimated and measured fragment size distributions. IntroductionThe assessment of fragmentation is an important aspect of the design and planning of the block cave mining method, and forms an integral part of the design of the excavations at the extraction level and the selection of material handling systems for transporting the ore to the processing stations. Secondary blasting requirements can also be estimated based on the fragment size distributions developed for the block cave (Laubscher, 1994).Several methods of estimating fragment size distributions in block cave mines have been developed based on joint set parameters estimated from structural data from oriented core drilling campaigns and mapping of available excavations and outcrops. The BCF program (Esterhuizen, 1999) estimates the fragmentation using a combination of empirical, analytical, and rational methods to model the behaviour of materials during the primary and secondary fragmentation processes. The program JKFrag uses advanced tessellation of joint traces to create rock blocks and then generate fragment size distributions (Brown, 2002). Nickson, Coulson and Hussey (2000) presented the details of processing of the geotechnical data from the Mont Porphyre project, including an assessment of block sizes from the data collected on the core logging sheet. The distance between natural fractures was used to create distributions of block lengths, and a distribution of potential block sizes was estimated assuming that the blocks had equal dimensions in all directions. The results agreed closely with the results of the BCF program. Hadjigeorgiou, Grennon, and Nickson (2002) demonstrated the use of oriented borehole data to provide characteristic block size distributions for a mining project using a software package called Stereoblock, which generates a three-dimensional joint network for a given volume and calculates the volumes of blocks created by the intersections of these joints, simulated as circular planes. The distributions of joint orientation and joint spacing generated from statistical analysis of the oriented core data are used for the creation of the Stereoblock model. The diameter of the circular planes representing the joints is determined based on the mean and standard deviation of the joint trace length obtained from scan-line mapping."

Increased depths of conventional gold and platinum mines, longer travelling times as working places move further from the shaft, and ancillary activities taking place in the mining cycle reduce the useable time spent at them workface. Current shift lengths of 8 hours 20 minutes may no longer be adequate ton complete required mining activities.The impact of mineworker commuting times on shift work is also not well understood. The aim of this research was to draft a framework to optimize shift cycles in order to maximize productivity, health, safety, and wellness in the South African mining sector. The framework was informed by a review of the literature, case studies at a local gold mine and platinum mine, and a workshop with industry experts. The findings indicate potential advantages of extended shift lengths and continuous operations, such as improved productivity, asset utilization, and employee morale. However, concerns included fatigue and the associated safety hazards, particularly when working longer shifts, night shifts, and numerous consecutive shifts. Job demands, personal factors, and commuting times are further considerations when scheduling shifts. The ideal shift system for the mining sector should holistically consider and balance operational requirements, health and safety, and employees’ and their families’ requirements, and suit the unique needs of each operation. Changes in shift cycles will require a structured change management process, which involves all stakeholders, and could help to enhance the viability of the South African mining sector.

Ferrochrome (FeCr) is a vital ingredient in stainless steel production and is commonly produced by smelting chromite ores in submerged arc furnaces. Silicon (Si) is a componrnt of the FeCr alloy from the smelting process. Being both a contaminant and an indicator of the state of the process, its content needs to be kept within a narrow range. The complex chemistry of the smelting process and interactions between various factors make Si prediction by fundamental models infeasible. A data-driven approach offers an alternative by formulating the model based on historical data. This paper presents a systematic development of a data-driven model for predicting Si content. The model includes dimensionality reduction, regularized linear regression, and a boosting method to reduce the variability of the linear model residuals. It shows a good performance on testing data (R2 = 0.63). The most significant predictors, as determined by linear model analysis and permutation testing, are previous Si content, carbon and titanium in the alloy, calcium oxide in the slag, resistance between electrodes, and electrode slips. Further analysis using thermodynamic data and models, links these predictors to electrode control and slag chemistry. This analysis lays the foundation for implementing Si content control on a ferrochrome smelter.

This paper sets out to consider a specific type of corrosion protection system, which is referred to as a Duplex Coating system. The dictionary describes a duplex system as consisting of two elements or a “twofold” composition. The duplex system described in this presentation is such a two-part corrosion protection coating, viz, hot dip galvanizing as the firm base or primer, followed by a top paint system designed to combat severe corrosive environmental conditions encountered in nature. In principle, the duplex system is a cost effective and balanced, designed coating that is suited to the environmental conditions and service life requirements.

In a cobalt precipitation plant, phosphoric acid is used to eliminate excess uranium from the pregnant leach solution, resulting in a cobalt hydroxide product that has little uranium contamination. However, the amount of phosphoric acid added must be monitored and controlled to avoid financial and sustainability impacts and to prevent negative impacts on the final product quality. One possible solution to this problem is the use of online residual phosphorus measurement techniques to regulate the addition. By continuously monitoring the residual phosphorus levels in the solution, the plant can adjust dosing in real time to maintain the target residual phosphorus level. As a result, the cobalt precipitation plant can improve phosphorus level control, lowering the risk of overdosing, and ensuring consistent product quality. This approach can also improve process efficiency, reduce operational costs, and have a positive environmental impact

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is the particulate component of diesel exhaust, which includes diesel soot and aerosols. When released into the atmosphere, DPM can take the form of individual particles or chain aggregates, with most in the invisible sub-micrometer range of 100 nanometres. The main particulate fraction of diesel exhaust consists of fine particles and because of their small size, inhaled particles may easily penetrate deep into the lungs. The rough surfaces of these particles make it easy for them to bind with other toxins in the environment, thus increasing the hazards of particle inhalation. DPM is a significant health hazard in underground mining operations, where the use of dieselpowered equipment in confined spaces can lead to high levels of exposure among people working in these environments. Classified as a carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), DPM has been linked to severe health effects, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, as well as an increased risk of lung cancer. Effective management of DPM is essential not only for protecting people’s health but also for ensuring regulatory compliance, maintaining operational efficiency, and safeguarding the long-term viability of mining companies.

Body breakage usually involves breakage of particles by compression between two surfaces or impacted against a rigid surface, with the latter of interest in this current study. This mode of breakage has been identified to be the most elementary size reduction process and the most effective breakage process in comminution devices. It has been found in the literature that the progenies produced from this form of breakage possess a residual velocity at which they move, after the breakage event. In the pursuit of efficiently utilising applied comminution energy, a laboratory-scale breakage device has been developed to deliver precise specific impact breakage using the concept of a fast-moving hammer and a slow-moving particle to effect breakage. The residual velocities of the progenies from the breakage event may be used to generate secondary breakage without further addition of energy if the particle encounters a stiff obstacle such as a steel plate at right angles to its path. To measure the extent of secondary breakage, the steel wall of the device was lined with a rubber material to suppress the second set of breakage events. The performance of the new device is analysed, based on calculated t10 values and measured residual velocities of the moving daughter particles. Testing involving anvils showed a much finer PSD and higher t10 compared to the test involving rubber lining. This finding is corroborated by the measured residual velocities of the progenies. The resulting energies calculated from the measured residual velocities of the progeny were found to be approximately 42-88% of the primary specific impact energy. "The complex planning required to achieve any planned production yields multiple and dissociated responses over the life of project (LOP). The customary decision-making process negates the possibilities of developing optimized and integral solutions from operating levels up to business and strategic levels. This results in an inefficient project or overall underperformance of the operation.In the project setting, disconnected trade-offs and improved performance studies become inadequate, because they are site-specific and use only a few comparative parameters. They are often based on a small data-set.Decisions taken to achieve overall objectives require the correct determination and dissemination of key performance indicators (KPIs). The KPIs indicate efficiency in operation, whereby the marginal rate of technical substitution corresponds to the rate of production. It is the necessary condition for optimization. Performance realization for sustainability follows optimization modelling, the latter often being presented with financial results such as business net present value (NPV). It considers techno-financial constraints and provides a strategic and aligned outlook of KPI decisions for an enhanced and integrated outcome.This paper explains a mining case study that is rendered efficient, and through business optimization (BO) short-term and sustainable targets are reached. Business optimization increases the NPV by 14.7%. This is achieved by challenging conventional decision-making associated with maximizing business value by including environmental externalities within the LOP."

Land rehabilitation transcends the mere establishment of vegetation across disturbed landscapes; it should be conceptualised as a specialised ecological reconstruction process. This process necessitates a long-term perspective on the success of land repurposing. It requires a continuum of inputs specified and managed by a dedicated and qualified custodian to ensure the sustained economic viability and ecological sustainability of the land. Based on the authors’ combined experience and field observations over more than five decades, they advocate for an urgent shift away from traditional land rehabilitation practices toward a paradigm centred on land capability reconstruction and active stewardship. The prevailing rehabilitation culture has overly simplified the process to a mere revegetation exercise, which is fundamentally incompatible with the comprehensive requirements for sustainable land capability. While the regulatory framework provides valuable guidance for obtaining a mine’s social license to operate, a paradigm reset is essential. Mining companies must prioritise rehabilitation quality, set achievable sustainability goals, and establish clear pathways and milestones to meet relinquishment criteria. Currently, the status quo view—a model reliant on outsourced contracting and agricultural approaches—is that mine rehabilitation is a one-time intervention rather than a complex, systemic, and long-term process. This perspective presents significant challenges, as the success of ecological interventions can only be accurately assessed over extended timeframes, often spanning decades. Shortsighted rehabilitation specifications, coupled with practitioners operating within agricultural decision frameworks, frequently overlook the necessity for integrated rehabilitation expertise and the scientific foundation essential for designing and implementing effective ecological outcomes. A lack of long-term monitoring information impedes the required adaptive management of rehabilitated systems and, therefore, delays the transition towards final land use. This short approach costs the mining industry millions annually, often without recognising the inadequacies in long-term liability mitigation and the substandard ecological success achieved. The disconnect between procurement processes, the qualifications of service providers, and the unclear pathways to relinquishment can impede successful rehabilitation outcomes, frequently undermining progress toward sustainability milestones. Unless there is a fundamental reset of the land rehabilitation culture, pursuing sustainability will remain an elusive and perhaps impossible objective. Consequently, mining companies may hesitate to fully commit to sustainable land rehabilitation practices, as the prospects for relinquishment and final closure remain uncertain at best.

A study of the arrangements for pulp discharge on pebble mills, and their influence on mill performance by A. H. MOKKEN, B.Sc. (Eng.) (Rand) (Fellow), G. K. I. BLENDULF, M.Sc. (London) (Member) Although used for many years in the gold-mining industry, the conventional pan lifter at the discharge end of a pebble mill has hindered attempts at optimization of speed of rotation and pulp flow. A theoretical approach to flow patterns in pan lifters has pointed to limitations in the capacity of these lifters, with capacity decreasing as speed of rotation is increased. Complete elimination of the pan lifter by the adoption of peripheral or end discharge has resulted in a marked increase in pulp flow and an improvement in power utilization. Assays of the gold content of pulp discharged after a mill stoppage from mills fitted with pan lifters show values well in excess of the current milled grade, which indicates an accumulation of gold particles in the mill and, therefore, a longer retention period. The same could apply to other heavy minerals and metals present in the ore feed or worn off mill linings and metallic grinding media. Examples are osmiridium, fine iron and iron alloys, and copper and sulphide minerals. This phenomenon is attributed to the higher specific gravities of these metals and minerals, causing them to migrate towards the mill shell, from which position they are not readily removed by the lifters at the discharge end of the mill. The close association of gold particles with iron and sulphide minerals in the crevices of mill liners might be conducive to the formation of coatings on the gold. Assays of samples of milled pulp taken from a mill designed for end discharge show a lower accumulation of gold. The accumulation and nature of these gold particles are being studied at present. With increasing diameters of pebble (or autogenous) mills, peripheral or end discharge appears to be the preferred method of pulp removal.

A study of fatigue-crack growth in a rail steel and an associated weld metal showed that fatigue cracks in the deformed rail steel had slightly higher growth rates than in undeformed rail steel. The crack growth in the weld metal was appreciably faster than either and exhibited plateaux that were above the upper bound reported for rail steels, The cyclic-life curves showed that, over an indicated service period of 8 years, both the deformed and the undeformed rail steels should not be prone to fatigue failures under the defined mechanical conditions, For the weld metal, the cyclic-life curves indicated the possibility of premature fatigue failures but, as al the input parameters represented a 'worst case' situation, this assessment could wel be ultra-conservative. In the rail steels at low levels, the extension of the fatigue cracks occurred by ductile striated growth. At a Kmax level of 35 MPa .J/n, cleavage facets formed initially on the surface of the fatigue fractures, and their incidence increased with Kmax until the onset of fast failure, The microstructure of the deformed rail steel exhibited cleavage facets at a slightly lower Kmaxvalue, and contained more cleavage facets at a given K level, than the microstructure of the undeformed rail steel. The average size of the cleavage facets agreed well with the pearlite nodule dimensions of 60 to 100 ILm. The microstructure of the weld metal was much coarser and contained columnar grains. At al f.K levels, the dominant fracture mode was cleavage, with small isolated regions of ductile striated fatigue cracks. The size of the cleavage facets varied from 150 to 600 ILm, and such a variation may be explained by the fact that cracking generally occurs in association with the pro-eutectoid ferite phase, and that this phase is distributed along some boundaries of prior austenite grains and the boundaries of the coarser columnar grains.
