The main difficulty has again been the cost of the Journal and I think most of you are aware of the changes that we propose to make. I shall be sorry to see the last of our old format but then I have always had rather a con¬servative outlook.

An experimental feritic stainless steel with a chromium content of 40 per cent was welded by laser and electron beam (EB) welding processes. These techniques were found to be particularly suited to the welding of this alloy in that the impact toughness of the weld metal and heat-affected zone (HAZ) of the laser welds compared favourably with those of the parent aloy. When the EB process was used, the impact toughness of the weld metal was over 180 J/cm2. Grain growth in the HAZ was minimal for welding with these two processes. Corosion tests, conducted in a solution consisting of 20 per cent sulphuric acid and 100 p.p.m. of potassium thiocyanate, and In a highly corrosive industrial solution, indicated that the laser and EB welds were free of sensitization effects, thus confirming the metalographic results.

"The beneficiation of iron ore slimes by selective flocculation was studied. Polyacrylamide (PAM) and guar gum were used as flocculant, along with sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) as a dispersant. The samples collected were initially subjected for chemical and mineralogical studies. The mineralogical studies indicated the presence of haematite and goethite as the principal iron-bearing minerals, with quartz and kaolinite as gangue minerals. The selective flocculation tests showed that the Fe grade can be enhanced from 58.24% to 64.60% Fe at a recovery of 66.33% using polyacrylamide as the flocculant. A Fe grade of 63.20% at a recovery of 68.04% was obtained using guar gum as flocculant. The efficacy of the studies was analysed using a separation index, which indicated that the higher separation index was obtained with the tests employing polyacrylamide as the flocculant. IntroductionIndia is endowed with huge reserves of highgrade iron ore and is one of the prominent producers in the world. As the high-grade iron ores have been exhaustively mined, it has become imperative to use low-grade iron ores, fines, and slimes to meet the growing demand. Also, generation of fines and slimes during mining and processing contributes to loss of minerals to the extent of 30% of the total value (Mandre and Panigrahi, 1997). These fines/slimes are often discarded as waste into tailing ponds, containing considerable amounts of iron. Therefore beneficiation of tailings/slimes has become necessary for optimal utilization of the resources.In recent years, interest in recovery of valuable minerals from low-grade ores, slimes, and tailings has increased worldwide. These activities are initiated not only to recover minerals but also to address various environmental issues associated with fine particle treatment. The literature reveals that several technologies have been employed in this regard, including flotation, advanced gravity separation, and high-intensity magnetic separation. However, these processes are found to be ineffective for fine particle treatment due to lower collision probability in flotation, decreased gravitational effect in gravity separation, and reduced drag force in magnetic separation, among other factors (Batisteli and Peres, 2008; Das et al., 2007; Dworzanowski, 2012; Rocha, Caneado, and Peres, 2010). Therefore, it is in this regard that selective flocculation has gained importance in treating slimes in recent years."

Gold has been demonstrated as a possible catalyst for oxidation reactions. Some evidence for a possible promotion effect of platinum has also been recorded. The influence of platinum as promoter for Au/?-Al2O3 prepared via anionic ion-exchange for the oxidation of glycerol was investigated in a batch reactor at 60°C. It is inferred that the addition of platinum reduces the catalytic activity and the rate of deactivation, resulting in an overall higher final conversion of glycerol with increasing platinum loading. The addition of platinum to the catalyst favours the formation of the desired product, glyceric acid.

Liquidus temperatures in the Cr-Fe-Si system in the composition range representative of ferrochromium-silicide produced in South Africa J. C. M. Wethmar, B.Se. (Eng.) Rand D. D. Howat,U B.Se. Strydom, M.Sc., Ph.D. Alloys in the composition range of chromium, 20 to 50 per cent, iron, 10 to 30 per cent, and silicon, 25 to 55 per cent, were subjected to both differential thermal analysis and the classical quench method so that the liquidus temperatures of ferrochromium-silicide alloys could be determined. The results are presented as liquidus curves on pseudo-binary sections at various ratios of chromium to iron and as liquidus isotherms in the ternary section.

The optimization of sample spacing In South African gold mines by J. M. RENDU*, Eng. Se.D., M.S. (Min.) U.S.A. (Graduate Member) A first attempt is made at optimization of sample spacing in South African gold mines. The De Wijs model, which is shown to give a good representation of the geostatistical properties of gold values, is used to analyse the influence of the distance between samples along a stope face on the error of estimation of the stope value. The influence of other factors such as the face advance before resampling, the sample density, and the stope size, is also considered. Practical conclusions are drawn concerning the optimum sampling policy to be followed in various situations, and it is shown that sampling on a regular grid does not necessarily give the best results.

The rate of dissolution of sulphide minerals is frequently interpreted in terms of the passivating behaviour of a layer of material on the surface. This interpretation has driven research to identify and possibly remove this layer from the surface, and thus yield higher rates of dissolution. The identification of such layers has proved difficult, with different researchers claiming different compositions for possible layers. An alternative framework has been pursued by the author and co-workers, who have argued that the rate of dissolution is governed by the electronic structure of the minerals which give rise to their semiconducting properties. Researchers sceptical of this approach have argued that semiconducting properties are only important in highly pure substances. In this paper, we review the electronic and semiconducting properties and discuss how they impact dissolution behaviour. Turbulence in stirred tank flotation vessels determines the bulk transport of particles and has an important role in particle-bubble collisions necessary for attachment. Positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) produces quantitative measurements of the kinematic motion of different particle classes inside flotation vessels. This paper presents flow profiles of the vessel, residence time distributions, flow profiles through the mesh and macroturbulent kinetic energy distributions as experienced by valuable (hydrophobic) mineral particles in a laboratory scale flotation vessel. The results highlight the impact of the rotor-stator design and a retrofit mesh modification at the upper part of the vessel which improve recovery by decreasing turbulence in the quiescent zone and at the interface. Understanding the contribution of geophysical variables is vital for identifying ore indicator regions. Both magnetometry and gamma-rays are used to identify the geophysical signatures of the rocks. Density is another key variable for tonnage estimation in mining, and needs to be re-estimated in areas of change when a boundary update has been conducted. Modelling these geophysical variables in 3D will enable investigation of the properties of the rocks and improve our understanding of the ore. The Gaussian Process (GP) was previously used to generate 3D spatial models for grade estimation using geochemical assays. This study investigates the influence of the following two factors on the GP-based autonomously generated 3D geophysical models: the resolution of the input data, and the number of nearest samples used in the training process. A case study conducted on a typical Hammersley Ranges iron ore deposit using geophysical logs, including density, collected from the exploration holes, is examined in this paper.

The Decar Nickel District is a greenfield discovery by FPX Nickel Corp., of nickel mineralisation located in central British Columbia (BC), Canada. The Baptiste deposit is part of the Decar Nickel District and is a unique deposit containing a nickel-iron alloy mineral called awaruite, with over 2-billion tonnes of inferred resource grading 0.12% Davis Tube Recoverable (DTR) nickel. This deposit represents a significant nickel resource. Awaruite is a high density and ferromagnetic mineral, which could be recovered, along with magnetite that is also present in the samples, using magnetic separation. However, there is still a lack of understanding of the properties of the awaruite and its metallurgical response. This information is imperative for the set-up of the variables involved in its concentration. The aim of this paper is to show and discuss the effect of magnetic field strength for the recovery of nickel from Baptiste deposit samples. Magnetic separation at bench and pilot scale with different magnetic field strengths is evaluated as a concentration method for awaruite. Mineralogical information is provided to support the results and also to briefly assess the variability of DTR nickel within the deposit. The Baptiste deposit is unique and will benefit from a sound scientific understanding of the process solution as well as other ongoing work. If successful, the outcome will lead to the development of a mine. With greater than 2-billion tonnes of inferred resource, the mine would represent a significant new source of nickel globally. This paper investigated the pre-concentration amenability of sovite (carbonatite) ore to enhance the grade of rare earth elements (REE) bearing minerals by rejecting calcite, and to improve total rare earth elements (TREE) recovery using gravity and magnetic separation. A high proportion of calcite affects downstream processes like leaching due to high acid consumption. Multiple flowsheets combining gravity and magnetic separation were employed to target > 60% TREEs recovery to the final concentrate and > 60% calcite rejection to the tailings. Head analysis of the feed showed the sample’s main constituents as Fe (15.61%), Ca (16.04%), SiO2 (7.13%), and lastly TREEs (1.12%). Mineralogy liberation data at 2mm top size indicated poor liberation of TREEs, with the majority of minerals displaying < 30% mass greater than 80% liberated. Grain size distribution data showed that the majority of REE minerals are fine grained and report to the < 20 μm size class. Calcite liberation mineralogy showed < 60% mass greater than 80% liberation.A combination of a single-stage shaking table with a wet high intensity magnetic separator at a magnetic intensity of 7520 G was found to be the optimum flowsheet. For a shaking table feed with P80 of 150 μm followed by tails regrind to P80 of 45 μm as feed to wet high intensity magnetic separator, the overall mass balance results showed that 60.5% TREEs are recovered to the concentrate while 63.0% calcite is rejected to the tails. "This study evaluates the efficiency of using mechanochemical reduction to assist the extraction of zinc from zinc ferrites by alkaline leaching. The transition of zinc ferrite into a metastable state after mechanochemical reduction with metallic iron contributes to the ready dissolution of zinc from the activated zinc ferrites in alkaline solution. Zinc ferrites were mechanochemically reduced under conditions of Fe:ZnFe2O4 mole ratio of 2:1, using 5 mm diameter stainless steel balls as the activation medium at a mass ratio of balls to raw materials of 25:1. Subsequent leaching in 6 mol/L NaOH solution at 90°C resulted in more than 70% Zn extraction. These results may be used to further develop a hydrometallurgical process for recovering zinc from zinc ferrites in alkaline solution.IntroductionZinc is an important nonferrous metal required for various applications in batteries, solder, dielectric materials, and piezoelectric materials. High-grade, easily concentrated ores are becoming scarcer: to meet world demands for zinc, it is necessary to develop economical and environmentally safe metallurgical technologies that use secondary materials such as leach residues of roasted zinc concentrates and electric arc furnace dusts. The zinc in the majority of these wastes occurs in the form of zinc ferrite (franklinite, ZnFe2O4), which is very stable and insoluble in most acidic and alkaline solutions (Langova and Matysek, 2009; Youcai and Stanforth, 2000).Several pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes (Jankovi et al., 2014; Langova and Matysek, 2010; Morcali et al., 2012; Shawabkeh, 2010) have been proposed for the treatment of zinc ferrites. Pyrometallurgical methods are costly owing to high energy consumption and their emissions of toxic gases are considered an environmental problem; hydrometallurgical methods are preferred for process economy and environmental reasons (Copur et al., 2004)."

Located in the state of Pará, Brazil, the Sossego copper and gold mine consists of a heterogeneous geological deposit. Its complexity derives from the hydrothermal alteration, the ore-forming event, which modified the host rocks, such as granite, and metamorphosed volcanic rocks into several mineral assemblages. Different mineral assemblages have led to differences in abrasiveness. A few Bond abrasion tests conducted during the mine feasibility study did not provide a robust abrasiveness database, thus the variation of physical properties for some mineralisation host rocks was not possible. Although several test methods may be used to determine ore abrasiveness, the Bond method is the one most commonly used in the mining industry. Despite being simple to carry out, this test method has certain limitations as to particle size and the amount of ore sample required, which often makes it difficult or even impossible to apply in the early stages of a project and in geometallurgical studies. The Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussées (LCPC) test may provide an alternative, as it requires a smaller amount of fine-grained material. This study aimed to provide data on wear properties of various ore types from Sossego mine using the LCPC method. It included validation for 40 different ore samples using the Bond test as a benchmark. The results showed good correlation, indicating it may be possible to use the LCPC test as an alternative to the Bond abrasion test. A high abrasiveness index was found for acid metavolcanic rock, confirming the results observed in Sossego mill’s operating database, pointing to a mineralogical drive to amorphous quartz. ?Rare earths ?will not be bargaining instruments?? was stated in a headline in China Daily of 29 October 2010. The Chinese government is trying to fend off the persistent accusations from Japan, the USA, and Europe that it is manipulating the supply of these so called ?critical? metals to gain political and economic advantages. The critics maintain that China has taken the rest of the world hostage by controlling 97% of the resources of rare earths. These elements are crucial in a number of high-tech applications. They are not impossible to substitute, but difficult to do so effectively. The name ?rare earth? is a misnomer, as even the least abundant is 200 times more common in the Earth?s crust than gold. They are, however, difficult to find in economic concentrations. The Chinese near-monopoly over the rare earths, together with China?s scramble for other resources in Australia, Africa, and elsewhere around the world, is seen as an example of a Chinese strategy to take control of vital metal resources. The Chinese are also accused of using unfair and sometimes illegal business practices in this fight for resources. Practices which, critics claim, put the Chinese interests above the interests of the host countries, in particular in Africa.

The problem of a realistic investment analysis for a new mining venture that sells its products on the international metal markets IS studied against the background factors, firstly, of different inflation rates between the countries hosting the mines and those. hosting the metal markets; and, secondly, of the changing pattern of currency exchange rates between such countries. The purchasing-power parity theory is used to establish a pattern of relationship between these two factors, and to develop a more logical approach to the long-term forecasting of metal prices in the currency of the country in which the mine is situated.

Rand (Member) Recent studies have shown that the overall extraction of gold from Witwatersrand ores is increased as the proportion of gold reporting to the amalgamation circuit is increased. Testwork has therefore been carried out with a view to improving recovery by gravity concentration. In this paper, the history of gold recovery by gravity concentration is reviewed, and methods and machines at present in use are briefly described. The results of plant and laboratory tests are presented, and the limitation of existing concentrators is discussed. A pilot plant is being built for the testing of improvements to the existing concentrators and of several new devices, particularly the Reichert-cone concentrator.

The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy mourns the passing of one of its most distinguished sons. Professor J. de V. Lambrechts died at Franschoek on 30th January, 1988, at the age of 76 years after a long illness. Mintek Application Reports A new series of Mintek reports made its appearance in 1987.
