This study investigates seismicity and rockburst control within the Merensky Reef and UG2 orebody of an intermediate-depth platinum mine located in South Africa's Bushveld Complex. Utilising a mine-wide seismic monitoring system, over 1,900 seismic events were recorded between April 2023 and May 2024, revealing complex seismic patterns driven by mining-induced stress changes. The largest event, with a magnitude of ML 2.0, underscores the seismic risks associated with mining at increasing depths. Key findings include the spatial and temporal variability of seismic events, with high seismic activity observed near pillars and geological structures. A significant portion of events correlated with pillar and foundation failures. Moment tensor analysis identified dominant failure modes, such as stress-driven fracture closures and dynamic pillar failures. To mitigate risks, the study emphasises advanced support system redesign and rockburst risk assessment using the rockburst damage potential (RDP) method. The research highlights the importance of monitoring, geotechnical compliance, and adaptive designs in enhancing safety and reducing seismic hazards in underground mining operations. The study applied the RDP framework, classifying damage across R1 to R5 scales, where most instances fell into low-risk categories (R1 and R3), indicating minor to moderate damage. However, data limitations and the tabular stoping method's complexity led to inconclusive results, highlighting the need for more robust data and customised risk assessment tools. Despite these challenges, the RDP approach provided valuable insights into rockburst mechanisms and the effectiveness of existing support systems.

South Africa has one of the largest Cr-related industries in the world and generates large amounts of Cr-containing smelter dusts. It is normal practice to scrub Cr from the furnace off-gas in water, and to recover the Cr by adsorption, followed by recycling of the loaded adsorbent into the furnace. A study was conducted to find a low-cost adsorbent that is capable of removing sufficient Cr from the solutions generated by scrubbing. The test work focused on the evaluation of different clay minerals (attapulgite, bentonite, and kaolinite) as adsorbents for Cr. Cr(VI) could only be adsorbed after prereduction with e.g. ascorbic acid (ASA). An 80% removal of Cr(VI) could be achieved from a solution containing 20 mg/L Cr using bentonite clay after reduction with ASA. Attapulgite and kaolinite adsorbed less than 55% Cr after reduction with ASA. Both ASA and ferrous salts were found to be suitable reducing agents. The use of acid mine drainage (AMD) was also investigated as a low-cost alternative reducing agent, as AMD usually contains iron. The Cr(VI) reduction potential of the AMD was determined by redox titration against a solution containing 50 mg/L Cr(VI). Studies show that AMD can potentially be used as a reducing agent in a Cr removal process if it is available on site.

Most mine safety initiatives in South Africa are doomed to limited success because of one simple fact: they are a-historical and un-cultural and do not deal with the serious ?legacy issues? that still negatively impact on safety, production, and relationships. We in the SA mining industry continually use imported, foreign safety concepts and systems that will not work fully in a South African context. ?The 4th Wave: Culture-Based Behavioural Safety?, as developed by Lance Bloch, an international award-winning clinical psychologist with 12 years? experience in the mining industry - focused mostly on Platinum - is making waves. He has been very successful in creating people-centred, empowered, high-performance safety cultures wherever he has worked. Not only does the 4th Wave transform the corporate culture of a mine, improving safety and production and building an environment of Ubuntu, but it also uses people?s cultures as a means of winning hearts and minds in the battle for safe production. Powerful relationships are built through engagement at all levels, leading to all being focused on the best needs of the company and its constituents as a whole. The programmes are no less than nation-building - something most necessary in the industry, with the pressures from community, unions, the DMR, and politicians. This presentation will describe and discuss the 4th Wave as an advance on previous safety technology and programmes, as particularly relevant to platinum mining in South Africa today.

"SynopsisCalcined basic nickel carbonate (BNC) concentrate was smelted in a pilotscale DC arc furnace to produce a nickel metal. The furnace was continuously operated for 12 days (24 hour/day), during which twelve different smelting conditions were investigated, with the major variables being reductant type and feed rate, flux composition and addition, and BNC feed rate.The 200 kW DC arc furnace was operated at power levels between 110 and 165 kW and at a total feed rate of 78 to 96 kg/h, resulting in an average slag and metal tapping temperature of about 1650°C. A total of 7.2 t of BNC were smelted, producing about 5.44 t of nickel metal and 2.94 t of slag. Nickel recoveries of 96.4% and higher were achieved, and the slag nickel content was as low as 0.1%. The major impurities in the metal were iron (mostly from oxygen lancing) and carbon. The calculated feed carry-over was less than 0.85% and the graphite electrode consumption was between 2.8–3.3 kg/MWh.IntroductionOne of the most distinctive advantages of DC open-arc smelting is the ability to process fine raw materials without any major issues with regard to the operability of the furnace, metal recovery, and metal quality. This has been demonstrated in Mintek’s DC arc pilot plant facilities over a period of about three decades (Curr et al., 1983). The materials that have been processed include laterite (Kotze, 2002), chromite fines (Curr et al., 1983), manganese fines (Lagendijk et al., 2010), PGM concentrates (Shaw et al., 2013), electric arc furnace (EAF) dust (Denton et al., 2005; Abdellatif, 2002a) and stainless steel (SS) dust (Denton et al., 2005; Abdellatif, 2002a; Goff and Denton, 2004), and petroleum fly ash (Abdellatif, 2002b). The top particle size of such materials can vary from a few millimetres (e.g. laterite) to micrometres (EAF and SS dust). Dusting, whether due to physical carryover of feed or to the arc side reactions, has been proven to be a non-issue. As such, the applications of DC open-arc furnaces have the potential to be extended to other raw materials such as particulate nickel oxide, which has a particle size much less than 100 µm.Nickel oxide is typically produced from laterite ore by sulphuric acid leaching, purification, and precipitation as basic nickel carbonate (BNC) (Rhamdhani, Jak, and Hayes, 2008) or as mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP) (Mackenzie, Virnig, and Feather, 2006), and finally calcining at moderate temperatures (800–1200°C). The NiO product is very fine, with an average particle size in the range of 10–20 µm and a NiO content of more than 99%."

In most auriferous hydrothermal deposits, gold is preferentially associated with pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals, with higher economic gold values noted for the latter and arsenian pyrite minerals. In this paper, surface (Cryo-XPS) and solution (EDTA extraction) analysis were used to characterise pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals under different aqueous conditions involving electrokinetic study and collector interactions to better understand ways of improving the separation of pyrite and arsenopyrite. The evidence showed higher surface oxidation at solution pulp pH values in the range of 4-11 for arsenopyrite relative to pyrite. The observed highest ratio of pyrite to arsenopyrite selectivity was 1.7 at collector concentration of 50 g/t and decreased with an increase in collector concentration. The failure of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) results in the discharge of significant quantities of hazardous waste material into the natural environment. Research studies relating to slope instability have identified physical mechanisms such as rainfall-induced erosion, liquefaction, and shear failure as the main triggers. The generation of transient pressure waves and the mobilization of pre-event water in the unsaturated zone have been found to trigger shallow landslides in natural hillslopes. In this paper we review these physical mechanisms, known as groundwater ridging (GWR) and the Lisse effect (LE), from other studies. Previous researchers have explained both these phenomena through field and laboratory observations, numerical modelling, as well as conceptual discussions. These case studies demonstrate the impact of rainfall characteristics on the generation of transient pressure waves that rapidly increase the phreatic surface and change pore water suction. Reference is also made to the influence and behaviour of physical porous medium characteristics on the establishment of a continuous water phase that facilitates the transmission of an induced pressure head. However, previous studies fail to recognize the possibility that the pressure increase in pre-event water through pore air propagation could cause slope instability in tailings dams. The authors suggest that the physical properties and hydraulic behaviour of unsaturated porous tailings media make it susceptible to GWR and the LE, resulting in the creation of a potential failure plane.

The coordination compound tetrakis(1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanediona to)zirconium(IV), [Zr(DBM)4], (DBM = dibenzoyl methane/1,3- diphenyl-1,3-propanedionol) was synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. [Zr(DBM)4] crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c (a = 24.769(4) Å, b = 10.216(5) Å, c = 19.314(4) Å, and = 101.541(5)°). The coordination geometry around the zirconium atom, formed by the eight O-donating atoms of the four -diketonates, is found to be a near-perfect square antiprism. Crystal packing is stabilized by C?H... interactions throughout the crystal lattice. This structure is a noteworthy example of the application of ambient condition synthesis of zirconium compounds in N,N'-dimethylformamide (DMF) as reaction and crystallization solvent, highlighting the possibilities of aerobic condition metal purification through chelation.

(Visitors) In sulphide flotation processes, there are two mechanisms by which particles are transferred from the flotation pulp to the concentrate: adhesion to air bubbles and natural flotation, and entrainment in the froth. The entrainment mechanism is particularly important for particles of non-sulphide gangue, which do not absorb collector. The importance of controlling the recovery rate of water was illustrated in plant testwork in which selectivity between valuable sulphides and sulphide gangue, and between valuable sulphides and non-sulphide gangue, was altered by manipulation of variables affecting the water recovery rate. The two mechanisms should be recognized in the development of a control system. Most of the control schemes in operating plants have concentrated on reagent additions, which affect the natural flotation mechanism. Although control of the chemical environment is clearly of paramount importance in flotation, plant tests have shown that control of the variables affecting the entrainment mechanism is also important.

The leaching of chalcopyrite in ferric sulfate media is notorious for its slow and inhibited kinetics. Different methods have been proposed to improve the kinetics, including the use of organic compounds as additives to the leaching media. In this study, the enhancing effect of methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, and 2-propanol on the leaching of chalcopyrite in aerated acid ferric sulfate solutions using different reactor systems was investigated. The results revealed a clear improvement of copper dissolution by methanol and 1-propanol relative to tests with no additives under similar conditions. Operating a continuous-flow mini-column reactor yields surprisingly good results, potentially related to the maintaining of a consistent leaching micro-environment on the mineral surface. Scanning electron microscopy studies showed that the alcohols result in the removal of surface deposits formed during the anodic dissolution, potentially thus facilitating improved cathodic reduction of the ferric ion to drive the anodic dissolution.

Steel is produced in a basic oxygen furnace from hot metal obtained from a blast furnace. A sintered iron ore with good hightemperature properties (strength and permeability) should be used as feed to the blast furnace. The quality of this sintered ore depends on the reactivity of the iron ore used as feed to the sinter plant during the lime assimilation step in the sintering process. The penetration test is the standard method for evaluating the reactivity of iron ore with lime. It is, however, difficult to determine the exact depth of penetration from the standard test. A new test method is proposed that allows automatic evaluation of iron ores in terms of lime assimilation with increasing temperature. A comparison of the coefficients of variation for the new and standard methods for each ore type demonstrates that the results of the new test are more reproducible and more precise than those of the standard method. The test is also less time-consuming and easier to implement.

The simulation of multi-component classification with modified viscosity model is the key focus in the current study. The classification of the ores using hydrocyclone is a renowned process and has a convoluted flow separation phenomenon. The highly turbulent flow inside hydrocyclone depends on the operating and design parameters apart from the feed mixture. Slurry viscosity also plays a dominant role in the classification of solid particles under the centrifugal settling action. A heterogeneous mixture with different components would result in different settling and rheological behaviour of particles’ suspension in the water medium. The newly proposed multi-component viscosity model (Mandakini et al. 2020) is implemented as a user-defined function to define the material property during the CFD study of the mixture rheology inside hydrocyclone classifier. The multiphase and turbulence model is solved using the modified Algebraic Slip Model and Large Eddy Simulation model. A comparison of the predicted component performance curves is evaluated with and without the corrected viscosity model. The density and size effect on the particle phase distribution inside the classifier are compared, where the misplacements of the finer particles are carefully assessed. Validation of the component classification in hydrocyclone with the laboratory experiments found a close agreement with the rheology based CFD data. Pyrometallurgical smelters utilise tap-holes, through which liquid metal, matte and/or slag are tapped at regular intervals. However, tap-hole failures can have a devastating impact on smelters, which includes loss of equipment, human life and business interruptions. Contributing factors to tap-hole failures include poor and/or incorrect refractory material selection, including tap-hole clays. The functions of tap-hole clays in smelters include their ability to be extruded and drilled with ease at the end and beginning of a tap, and their ability to resist chemical wear due to molten metal and slag during tapping. Mintek is currently developing methods of evaluating properties of tap-hole clays with a specific focus on workability, and wear mechanisms of clays due to ferrochrome alloy and slag. Of particular interest to this study was the characterisation of various tap-hole clays. This paper evaluates the chemical and phase chemical properties of three different tap-hole clays. The bulk chemical composition of the tap-hole clays was determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, proximate analyses and combustion methods. The bulk phase compositions and specific phase chemical compositions were studied using quantitative X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and electron probe microanalyses techniques. In May of 1980, a mine operated by Belmoral Mines Ltd experienced a failed crown pillar, resulting in the death of eight miners and putting sixteen others in harm?s way. The Ferderber mine was located in the Val d?Or region of the province of Quebec in Canada, and had been under development for 19 months and production for 9 months, since the opening of the portal. The crown pillar separating the 1?7 level from overlying overburden ultimately failed, permitting an estimated 1.5 million cubic feet of liquefied sediment to gain entry into the mine. This paper back-analyses the cave-in by applying decision error theory, in an examination of the organizational culture and the collective decisions contributing to the cave-in disaster. A case will be made for a greater understanding of mining methodology, geomechanics and risk assessment when operating in such challenging geologic conditions. Boundary condition and decision (BCD) analysis will be introduced as an innovative new method for the analysis of mine accidents and incidents. It will also be shown that BCD analysis can be applied to any event in an enterprise for which standards, norms or legislation exists. A cognitive profile will be presented that provides insight into the safety ethos existing within the Ferderber mine organization at the time of the tragedy.

Pillar strength is affected by pillar shape, but this has largely been ignored in past research studies. Bord-and-pillar layouts are typically designed using empirical strength equations developed for square pillars. Owing to the poor quality of pillar cutting, many hard-rock pillars have an irregular shape and it is not clear how this affects pillar strength. Furthermore, the strength of rectangular pillars in comparison with square pillars is also difficult to quantify. The ‘perimeter rule’ is widely adopted for rectangular pillars, but its applicability for pillars with irregular shapes has never been tested. We used numerical modelling in this study to investigate the effect of pillar shape on strength. An analytical limit equilibrium model of a square and a strip pillar also provided useful insights. For slender pillars, the strength of a long rib pillar is essentially similar to that of a square pillar. In contrast, for rib pillars with a large width to height ratio, there is a substantial increase in strength. The study found that the perimeter rule should not be used for irregularly shaped pillars. Displacement discontinuity modelling, using a limit equilibrium approach, is proposed as an alternative to determine the strength of these pillars.

AK6 is a Cretaceous aged kimberlite located in the north-east of Botswana, close to Debswana's Drapa and Letlhakane Mines. It was discovered by Debswana in 1969, but was considered unattractive from an economic perspective. In 2003, Debot Prospecting Pty Ltd ('Debot') re-assessed the area and with the advent of new prospecting technology, particularly large diameter drilling ('LDD') and more detailed ground geophysical surveys found AK6 to be of interest. In 2005, the Boteti joint venture was formed between Debot and African Diamonds plc ('AFD'), which covered a number of Prospecting Licenses, including that which contained AK6.

Platinum mines in the Bushveld Complex are located in areas with a high geothermal gradient. This means that, compared to, for example, gold mines of the Witwatersrand region, high rock temperatures are encountered at relatively shallower depths. Thus air cooling and refrigeration need to be considered at early stages in mine development. Another factor that influences air cooling and ventilation requirements is the use of trackless diesel equipment for loading and hauling broken rock. At shallower depths it will be more cost-effective to locate the cooling and ventilation equipment on surface, whereas for deeper mines the more cost-effective option is to locate cooling equipment underground. For intermediate depths, trade-off studies need to be undertaken to determine the optimum mix between more cooling and less air or more air and less cooling, as well as the optimum location for this cooling equipment. Factors that are taken into account include power requirements, positional efficiency, and additional infrastructure requirements. Traditionally the approach has been to ventilate ?all of the mine all of the time?. However, with increasing power costs and growing pressure to ensure sustainability, this strategy must be modified to apply ventilation and cooling on demand. In other words, both cooling and ventilation equipment should be operated only when needed and should be adjusted to the demand at the time. Obviously there will be areas that will need to be ventilated (and cooled) continuously (for example, for dilution of flammable gases), but this can be built in to the overall strategy. In addition, in devising ventilation on demand (VoD) strategies, occupational criteria relating to exposure to gases, noise, and heat need to be taken into account. This paper discusses options available for implementing energy-efficient ventilation and cooling systems and suggests ways of changing traditional thinking in the overall ventilation and cooling of mines. Efficient ventilation and cooling designs can play a major role in improving sustainability and reducing energy costs and carbon footprint.

The results of development of technologies for flotation concentration of two types of complex beryllium ores are presented: beryllium-fluorite in apocarbonate metasomatites (Type I) and rare-earthberyllium in feldspar metasomatites (Type II). The researched samples of Type I ores contain a mineral complex that is difficult to separate by fatty acid flotation, including phenakite, bertrandite, fluorite, and carbonate minerals. The ores are characterised by an increased content of fluorite and carbonates. The sample of Type II ore contains such rare-earth minerals as bastnesite and orthite, and a beryllium mineral - cleiophane. The size of individualised grains of cleiophane does not exceed 0.04 mm, which significantly limits the possibility of extracting the mineral into the enrichment concentrates. For the Type I ores, a technological process for the extraction of fluorite using a phosphorus-containing reagent from the class of dialkylphenyl polyethylene glycol esters of phosphoric acid (DAPEGEPhA) has been developed. The use of DAPEGEPhA enables the production of a high-grade fluorite concentrate (95% CaF2). The production of commodity phenakite-bertrandite high-grade (10% BeO) flotation concentrate from the fluorite flotation tailings with using a fatty acid collector is based on binding calcium in the flotation pulp using soda, sodium hydroxide and sodium tripolyphosphate. The use of a combined collector based on fatty acids and DAPEGEPhA made it possible to produce a collective rare-earthberyllium- lithium concentrate with high REE extraction (88%) from the Type II ores.
