Attachment of collectors containing thioamide groups to sulfide minerals is interpreted as interaction between NH-acids and sulfides acting as solid bases with the formation of a donor–acceptor reagent–mineral bond. As the acid function of the reagents increases, their sorption optimum is observed to shift to a less alkaline region. The developed concept has enabled us to propose a method for calculating optimal pH values for the sorption of reagents on mineral surfaces depending on the acidity of the reagents and the pH value of the medium. Our estimates correlate well with the experimental data. We studied the spectra of the reagents containing thioamide groups and the spectra of copper salts and their surface compounds on an oxidised copper film, chalcopyrite, and pyrite using the infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Some effective applications are described of reagents containing thioamide groups in the flotation of copper, copper-molybdenum, and gold ores, both separately and in combination with other collectors. It is shown that the flotation performance is maximised by adding two- and three-component collector combinations, including collectors containing thioamide groups. In this case, the increase in the recovery of copper, molybdenum, and gold is up to 2-5% compared to conventional process conditions. A new, high-performing reagent containing a thioamide group is proposed. A commercial pilot batch of the reagent was produced and sent for flotation tests in gold ore applications. Metal dusting is a corrosion phenomenon that occurs in strongly carburizing gas atmospheres at elevated temperatures. Reaction kinetics and product characterizations of Alloys 602CA and 800 were examined by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD).The results showed that Alloy 602CA is more resistant to metal dusting than Alloy 800. Visual examination and SEM surface analysis showed that Alloy 800 suffered metal dusting attack after a relatively short exposure period. The amount of coke deposits increased on Alloy 800 with increased exposure from 96 to 336 hours. X-ray diffraction on the reacted surfaces identified graphite and austenite in both alloys and some iron oxides/spinel for Alloy 800.

"The Kamoa-Kakula copper project—a joint venture between Ivanhoe Mines, Zijin Mining Group Co. Ltd, and the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo—has been independently ranked as the world's largest undeveloped high-grade copper discovery by international mining consultant Wood Mackenzie. It is a very large, near-surface stratiform copper deposit with adjacent prospective exploration areas within the Central African Copperbelt, approximately 25 km west of the town of Kolwezi and about 270 km west of the provincial capital of Lubumbashi. A phased development approach is currently envisaged. The first phase of the project involves the development of a 6 Mt/a underground mine and surface processing complex (dual stream concentrator) at the Kakula deposit, a discovery announced in early 2016. The second phase involves an integrated 12 Mt/a two-stage development, beginning with initial production from the Kakula mine, to be followed by a subsequent, separate underground mining operation at the nearby Kansoko mine, along with the construction of a smelter. Project description and locationThe Kamoa–Kakula project comprises a newly discovered, very large stratiform copper deposit with adjacent prospective exploration areas, located within the Central African Copperbelt in Lualaba Province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The Kamoa–Kakula project lies approximately 25 km west of the town of Kolwezi and about 270 km west of Lubumbashi. Ivanhoe owns a 49.5% share interest in Kamoa Holding, an Ivanhoe subsidiary that currently owns 80% of the project. Zijin Mining owns a 49.5% share interest in Kamoa Holding, which it acquired from Ivanhoe in December 2015 for an aggregate cash consideration of US$412 million. The remaining 1% interest in Kamoa Holding is held by privately-owned Crystal River.The Kamoa–Kakula project consists of the Kamoa exploitation licences (exploitation permits 12873, 13025, and 13026, which cover an area of 397.4 km2) and one exploration licence (exploration permit 703 covering an area of 12.74 km2). The Kamoa exploitation licences, approved 20 August 2012, grant Kamoa Copper the right to explore for, develop, and exploit copper and other minerals, for an initial 30-year term, expiring on 19 August 2042. The permits can then be extended for 15-year periods until the end of the mine’s life."

Stirred milling technologies have firmly established themselves in concentrator circuits as energy-efficient alternatives to tumbling ball mills. High and continued increases in electricity costs, coupled with the ever-increasing power consumption by primary grinding circuits due to declining head grades of ore-bodies, provides a compelling case for these technologies. Additionally, the ability to successfully deploy stirred milling in coarse grinding applications extends the range of use in concentrators, thus increasing the opportunity matrix for energy optimization in a flowsheet. This paper therefore details methodologies and strategies that can be applied to evaluate the optimum stirred milling solution for different concentrator applications. These methods and strategies will focus specifically on the two major stirred mill machine types; namely, gravity-induced (VERTIMILL? grinding mill and Nippion-Eirich tower mill) and fluidized (SMD, Isamill?, Knelson-Deswik mill, etc. ). Finally, case studies from circuits across industry and laboratory tests will be used to illustrate the energy benefit from the use of stirred mills.

The problems associated with outliers and their adverse effects on resource estimation in deep level South African gold mines are presented, and solutions suggested in available literature are reviewed. Traditional Witwatersrand type outlier capping uses the 99th percentile grade as the upper limit, a somewhat blunt approach. The occurrence of high and low grade areas in mining operations and the estimation of resources using geostatistical techniques require that the assumption of stationarity be upheld. Honouring the stationarity of data requires that mining areas be subdivided into appropriately sized and spaced domains. In order to overcome high-grade conditionally biased block estimates, the overly strong influence of extreme grades is mitigated by using naturally occurring grade sub-domains, by identifying outliers within the grade sub-domains, allocating relevant capping limits, and weighting them in a post-estimation process to. Rather than applying a capping value across a domain it applies a maximum cap based on the extreme value and its range of influence; the method also ensures that relevant capping occurs even in lower grade sub-domains. The proposed method for capping outliers recognises that metal contained in high grade chip samples should not be over-capped, and based on the grade of surrounding samples. The post-processing method of capping outliers does not interfere with the kriging equations. The method is simple, elegant, and can be easily applied. An advantage is that the output from the kriging process is not overwritten, allowing for comparison between original kriging results and post-processing results.

Potholes on the Merensky and UG2 reefs in the Bushveld Complex occur as near-circular to elliptical depressions or slumps on the reef horizon, normally presenting as severe disruptions which prevent economic extraction. Within the pothole, the reef and other strata may either be attenuated, absent, or highly deformed, this being the result of the overlying hangingwall strata having slumped down. The hypotheses for pothole formation involve several mechanisms, including downward erosion, upward fluid movement, or synmagmatic deformation. When potholes are exposed in mine workings, significant fracturing is often observed. This fracturing is particularly evident in anorthosite rock types. Stress measurements were conducted in a pothole on the Merensky Reef to determine if the fracturing was due to high stress conditions. The paper describes the measurement results and numerical modelling that was done to determine the influence of depth and mining on the stress condition at the site. The results show that high stresses do exist in at least some potholes, and that current formation theories do not adequately explain the measured stresses. In support of understanding the high local stress associated with the pothole, the study explored several rock engineering modelling processes to validate the conditions of the study site and enclosing excavations. A better understanding of the stress conditions in potholes with additional data could lead to more appropriate support design and avoidance of potential rockbursts in these structures.

Zimbabwe hosts a varied array of coloured gemstones. With the exception of emerald deposits and several world-class pegmatites, few of the gemstone occurrences have received detailed attention from the scientific or mineral exploration communities. In the present contribution we summarize the status of knowledge of the gemstone deposits and occurrences in Zimbabwe, paying particular attention to the geological settings in which they were formed. Synthesis of this regional geological approach reveals that there may be significant exploration potential for further gemstone occurrences, particularly in the extensive pegmatite fields and in Al-enriched orogenic belts that have undergone greenschist to granulite facies metamorphism. Further socio-economic and developmental initiatives will aid in optimizing the value generation from this important sub-sector.

CITIC Heavy Industries has a large installed base of grinding equipment throughout Africa in different configurations, including high-pressure grinding rollers with ball mill and semi-autogenous ball crusher. The total installed power of CITIC’s mills exceeds 430 MW. In this paper, we compare several typical grinding circuits of copper in Africa with about 15 kt/d throughput based on ore properties, process selection, equipment sizing, and key equipment capital and operating costs. Actual operating performance is also introduced. The comparison for the following mine sites provides a general reference for the selection of copper grinding circuits with this approximate throughput: Kamoa-Kakula Copper Mine with high-pressure grinding rollers with ball mill circuit, and Deziwa and Sicomine Copper-Cobalt Mines with semi-autogenous ball crusher circuits

This review was initially motivated by the author’s own experience in attempting to reconcile run-of mine production tons with the Coal Resource and Reserve estimation of mineable, in-situ tonnages. The primary scientific measurements and observations that are collected during exploration at the beginning of the value chain will have a profound effect on the future of the mining operation. Due diligence must be exercised during the planning of a new mine and during the life of an existing mine. The comments provided by the technical and economic assessment group of Venmyn Deloitte confirmed the need for this critical review. They found the reporting of Coal Resources in South Africa to be inconsistent. This was particularly problematic in the Waterberg Coalfield in Limpopo Province. In this coalfield there are two types of coal deposit present. The first is comprised of the thick intercalated, cyclic coal and shale/mudstone sequences of the Volksrust Formation. This overlies multiple coal seams within the Vryheid Formation, each of which is thick enough to be extracted as an individual raw coal unit. On the other hand, the interbedded coal and shale seams of the Volksrust Formation require beneficiation to separate the coal from the shale. The review examines practices and methods, investigates alternatives, provides checks and balances, and tests these against actual production reconciliations. In conclusion, the best estimates of the mineable, in-situ tonnage will be obtained from the air-dry raw material density. These estimates should be adjusted afterwards to allow for free moisture content. The adjustments are derived from reconciliation data. The greatest contributing factor to the over-estimation of Reserve tonnages is the moisture content of the raw material. This fluctuates significantly under varying conditions in situ, as well as upon exposure to the natural environment. The air-dried density of the raw material includes inherent (structurally bound) moisture within the matrix. It provides credible tonnage estimations of raw material available while also providing an indication of voids within the volume of material being assessed. The calculated solids percentage can be used to adjust the specific gravity, which is determined via the Archimedes principle. This will supply a representative estimate of the material to be mined.

Excessive dust generation from unpaved mine haul roads is a problem common to most surface mining operations. While optimal road wearing course material selection parameters reduce the inherent dust generation potential, they do not totally eliminate fugitive dust. Many different classes of suppression or palliative treatments are available for mine haul roads and this paper initially ascertains basic selection guidelines, using a set of ideal dust palliative product, application and performance parameters based on mine road-user requirements. An evaluation and modelling methodology for truck generated fugitive dust emissions is developed as a basis for the comparative assessment of dust control strategies. For water-based spraying, a watering model was developed to estimate individual mine road watering frequencies for characteristic site parameter combinations during summer and winter operating conditions, for a required level of control or maximum dust defect. This forms the base-case scenario with which to compare the performance of other types of dust palliatives under the same conditions. Finally, a basic palliative economic evaluation model is introduced with the aim of identifying and costing the establishment, application and maintenance rejuvenation activities associated with the use of chemical palliatives. While palliative cost and performance is generally site specific, it is shown that under certain combinations of conditions, the use of dust palliatives has the potential to deliver cost savings when compared to water-based spraying.

Pressure leach autoclave circuits are employed in the leaching of ores, concentrates, mattes, alloys and intermediates for the recovery of metals into solution. Once the metals are extracted into solution, the value metals can be recovered by hydrometallurgical means such as by purification followed by electrowinning, hydrogen reduction, pyrohydrolysis, crystallization and other unit operations. In many of these integrated flowsheets the pressure leach step is pivotal to the recovery of the value metals from the host material. Furthermore, the autoclave circuit invariably is a high capital cost component of the plant and an area that is carefully scrutinized when debottlenecking and capacity increases are being considered. This paper identifies a unique proven way of increasing the capacity of existing or new exothermic pressure oxidative leach autoclave circuits by as much as two or three times.

This paper presents a detailed and systematic approach to metallurgy diagnostics using an integrated novel gold deportment technique for complex copper-gold and refractory gold ore bodies. This uantitative gold deportment for these complex ore bodies is a challenging task due to reasons such as lower grades, high variability of visible and invisible gold content in different sulphides and iron oxide phases, significant presence of disseminated and composite carbonaceous matters along with associations of various copper sulphide phases. Gold mostly occurs as "invisible gold" (sub-microscopic gold) as solid solution or as colloidal-sized particles in different sulphides and other phases. The dominance of invisible gold and presence of highly preg-robbing and finely disseminated carbonaceous matter adversely affects gold recovery in flotation and leach circuits. Studies were initiated on various complex ore deposits and also on samples representing various process streams. Some case studies are presented in this paper to demonstrate the value of a high confidence gold deportment methodology in developing insights for problem diagnostics and to identify opportunities for metallurgical improvements. A systematic and holistic approach involving different fields of expertise is critical for successful development and delivery of solutions for complex ore bodies. Mining is a significant economic activity in most Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries, and mineral beneficiation has been identified, and controversially discussed as one of the possibilities for industrialisation. With many member countries being economically too small to muster the human and financial resources which beneficiation requires, the recently adopted Regional Mining Vision (RMV) envisages interventions at a regional level. An opportunity arose to ask industry role players to what extent the SADC appears to support regional beneficiation policy interventions undertaken by member countries, and what the challenges are in undertaking beneficiation regionally, as a complement to, or substitute for country-specific beneficiation policies. Twenty-five semistructured interviews were conducted with experts from SADC member countries during the 2019 Mining Indaba. Participants were divided on whether beneficiation should be carried out nationally or in the SADC region. While beneficiation could support value-keeping, key challenges were found to be infrastructure development (i.e. energy, water), scarce skills, access to technology and related costs, but also lack of free trade and movement. We submit that a more integrated beneficiation strategy for the SADC region, as is being developed through the RMV, would indeed be relevant in the future. Human factors in stope productivity -a field experiment by K. F. MAUER, M.A. (Visitor), and A. C. LAWRENCE, B.Econ., D.Com. (Member) An experiment in which three human variables were manipulated in eight stopes was conducted in a gold mine over a period of roughly six months. The three variables, which each had two levels, concerned the degree of movement from gangs, the quality of the Bantu production supervisors, and the extent to which gangs were composed of a single ethnic group (Malawians). Time was included as a variable with three levels in the analysis of the findings. On the average, stable gangs produced 12 per cent more than gangs with a high percentage of transfers, gangs with better production supervisors were more successful by nearly 9 per cent than those with poorer production supervisors, and homogeneous gangs were more productive than heterogeneous ones by as much as 15 per cent. In addition, it was found that a number of the variables exercised a joint influence on stope productivity and that the effects of the variables were accentuated by the len gth of time they had been in operation. During the period October 2003 to June 2004, a containerized optical sorting pilot plant was operated at Kloof Gold Mine on a waste rock dump. In this paper, we describe the test work and its results leading to the decision to operate this pilot plant. This paper presents the operational data and financial figures achieved during this project, in particular, for the month of June 2004 when the plant was run at full capacity on three shifts, 24 hour operation. These results are also extrapolated and presented to show the profitability of such an operation at today?s gold price levels and cost structure.

Strict implementation of International Standards for representative sampling of coal is difficult for routine monitoring, due to time, technical, and economic constraints. A large percentage of the total sampling variance arises from errors accumulated during the earliest stages of sample collection. Modified procedures on the precision of the final result leads to controversies between the sellers and customers for coal. Manual collection of coal samples violates the principle of correct sampling, that all fragments must have an equiprobable chance of being in the sample. In addition, manual size reduction of large numbers of samples is time consuming and involves human errors. A coal quality management procedure in alignment with the relevant ISO standards that describes the sampling protocol has been implemented, and current sampling and laboratory analysis of coal from base load mines (mines situated at the mouth of the power station) are well established. For import coal, sampling is performed during unloading by auto-mechanical sampling (AMS). Due to logistical and safety issues associated with multiple suppliers, Eskom opted for the coal to be sampled at source on a pre-certification basis. Online analysers provide a fast, accurate, real-time method of determining the total moisture and elemental composition of coal and is important to the coal industry for pricing, quality control, and reduction of SO2 emissions. Elemental analyses include S, Si, Al, Fe, Ca, Na, Mg, Mn, Ti, K and Cl. Measurement of S is dictated by the control of SO2 emissions from coal-fired power plants. Elements such as Na and Cl have adverse effects on boilers, causing fouling and slagging. Available online elemental analyser technologies include prompt gamma neutron activation analyses (PGNAA), recommended for major element determination, and pulsed fast and thermal neutron analysis(PFTNA), that is capable of measuring the major and minor chemical elements contained in coal. These systems utilize nuclear reactions to produce characteristic gamma rays that are used for identifying various chemical elements. By acquiring the gamma rays in three different time windows, there is a significant reduction of the background as compared with the spectra taken with a radio isotopic source.

Dual energy X-ray transmission (DE-XRT) sorting is a recent development in the range of sensor-based sorting technologies available today. DE-XRT is particularly suitable for dry coarse coal beneficiation in the size range -120 mm +12 mm. In this paper, we describe the technology and show the results of a number of test runs conducted on different types of coal from the USA and South Africa. The results have shown that DE-XRT is an effective technology not only for deshaling of coal and removing pyritic sulphur but also for separating coal and torbanite. The use of dry deshaling methods will be more important as water availability becomes a greater concern. DE-XRT is one such technology which will be incorporated in future dry coal processing plants.

Process and steel chemistry differences in hot rolled Al-killed low carbon strip steel between the hot charge route (HCR) as practised in a compact strip production (CSP) plant and the conventional cold charge route (CCR) have been studied. This was done with reference to differences in reheating practice, hot rolling practice and steel chemistry through emphasis on the effects of solubility and reprecipitation of AlN in the two process/product combinations and its effect on ferrite grain size development. An earlier modelling study on the evolution of the austenite grain size in both of the above hot rolling processes has also now been extended to include an estimate of the possible effects of retained strain after the last finishing pass on the ferrite grain size. As part of this study the equilibrium solubility trends of AlN in a number of boron-free low carbon Al-killed strip steels with low and high sulphur content from the two respective processes was investigated by the thermoelectric power (TEP) technique and differences in the effects through the derived solubility equation of Log[Al][N]=2.6?9710/T at typical slab reheating temperatures was demonstrated. Ferrite grain size modelling using the significantly lower Ar3 transformation temperatures generally found in hot rolled low carbon strip steel produced in the CSP plant using the HCR compared well to the larger grain size produced in the conventional CCR strip rolling plant. Selective extraction through leaching of an amorphous slag obtained from a base metal smelter plant in Botswana is investigated in this paper, where the main objective is to optimise the experimental variables that would result in the maximum selective extraction of the three base metals (Ni, Cu and Co) from the slag waste. Mineralogical tests showed that the sample is composed mainly of fayalite (Fe2SiO4), with a total entrapped metal sulphides content of about 1.0 wt.% occurring as fine occlusions in the fayalite phase. In our experimental program, we compare the effectiveness of two common leaching techniques. In the first method, we use sulphuric acid to carry out atmospheric beaker leaching tests, and in the second method we use high pressure oxidative leaching. The effects of acid concentration, oxidant addition/oxygen partial pressure and pulp density on metal dissolution rate are examined. The optimal Ni, Cu, Co extractions of 80.5%, 81.9 and 98% respectively were obtained under high pressure oxidative leaching conditions (150 oC, 0.6 M H2SO4, 0.5 MPa O2), with substantially low dissolved Fe of 9.6%, the majority of which was removed as jarosite in the residue. Atmospheric beaker leaching yielded poor extractions of Ni below 40% when sulphuric acid combined with hydrogen peroxide (1.0 M and 0.6 M respectively, 65 oC) were used for leaching, while Fe, Cu and Co dissolutions were each about 80%. Therefore, using high pressure oxidative leaching provides a possibility to effectively extract Ni, Cu and Co while producing an environmentally benign residue, thus alleviating the current adverse environmental issues associated with the abandoned smelter slag. Most coal plants must run under conditions of varying feed conditions or are asked to produce qualities different from that used in the design. This can cause overloaded conditions as the ?bottlenecks? within the plant, depending on plant operation or as the feed changes. During plant design, geological information can be used to determine washability envelopes and blends that may be expected. Historical data can also be used to develop a size distribution envelope as well as to assign reasonable models for each of the unit processes. In operation, a plant can be sampled to determine changes and to refine process models. The information obtained can then be used in an accurate simulation to define how the plant can deal with the changing environment. This paper uses Limn: The Flowsheet Processor to simulate the coal plant in detail and will produce an accurate model, in terms of equipment sizing as well as water, medium, and solids balance, for each change in feed condition. It will show examples of running the simulation through complete density and size ranges and will determine the equipment required to address each part of the performance envelope.
