Colloquium and General Meeting were held at Kelvin House on 19th May, 1971, the theme being 'Modern trends in coal mining practice.' Mr V. C. Robinson (President) was in the Chair. The Colloquium was attended by 205 delegates and was opened by the President at 9 a.m. OBITUARY The President: 'It is my sad duty to announce the death of C. C. Cullen, Fellow, who joined the Institute in 1946 and passed away on 15th March, 1971. As a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased and in sympathy with the bereaved I would ask you all to rise and observe a few moments silence'. MacGillivray Mr President and gentlemen, I would like to congratulate the authors on presenting a most interesting paper on a very important subject. After several attempts at finding suitable reserves to extend the life of Welgedacht Exploration Company's Utrecht Colliery a block of coal rights was acquired south west of the town of Utrecht. A study of these reserves showed that they would enable a satisfactory return on capital invested to be achieved. It was decided therefore to open up what is now called the Zimbutu section of Welgedacht Exploration Company, to produce 41 000 metric tons of coal per month. The decision to open this section was taken in August, 1968 and due to certain allocation requirements it was necessary to bring it into production by the 1st of January, 1970. Fortunately a fair amount of statistical data had been collected prior to August, 1968 from the old Utrecht Colliery in anticipation of opening a mine and a fairly detailed rechnical report had been prepared. As a result the dead line was only missed by four days. Main features of the Design A feasibility study was carried out on three possible shaft positions and the final position was selected from these three on economic grounds. As the coal seam at the selected shaft position was only 21 metres below the surface it was decided to sink two twin incline shafts to enable rapid establishment of through ventilation and alternative hauling arrangements for quick development. This also allowed the final vertical ventilation shaft to be placed at some distance away to avoid the nuisance of fan noise. Second outlet requirements are also very well met by these twin inclines. Again on the basis of economics and also due to the uncertainty of roof conditions it was decided to use hand loading methods underground. However, to allow for future possible conversion to mechanised loading, should this become economical through rising wages, a conveyor belt was installed in the hauling shaft. This conveyor belt is fed from an endless rope haulage in the east companion by means of tipplers, a bin and a feeder. The main development heading was left clear for the future installation of a conveyor belt which would afford easy conversion to mechanisation.

Two SAIMM colloquia The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) is organizing two one-day colloquia in the State Pavilion, Milner Park showgrounds, Johannesburg, to coincide with the Electra Mining Exhibition on 16th and 17th September. Over a million rands worth of equipment will be on display, the Electra Mining Exhibition being rated among the four or five largest in the world. The 1978 Electra Mining Exhibition was attended by 24 000 visitors. "Project Management in the Metallurgical Industry", "Mine Fires" APCOM International Conference by H. W. GLEN The 17th APCOM Conference (under the auspices of the Council for the Application of Computers and Mathematics in the Mineral Industries) was to have been held in Moscow during the last week in October. South Africans have always given enthusiastic support to the APCOM series of meetings, since their inception in 1961. The conference was held in the Republic in 1972.

"The authors were tasked with introducing safe and efficient drilling and blasting practices to a small artisanal mine located in the Eastern Province of Rwanda. The current mining methods employed at the mine are inefficient as rockbreaking is conducted utilizing hammer and chisel, or by drilling and blasting with no understanding of the rockbreaking process. The paper discusses the drill and blast cycle, as well as the associated activities necessary to support the mining cycle. The challenges and critical aspects in implementing drill and blast activities are discussed, as well as some of the technical aspects, i.e.drilling pattern, initiation and timing of the blast, and handling of misfires. Ancillary issues such as ventilation, training, communication, effective planning, logistics, and human relations are also examined. IntroductionRockbreaking accounts for 60% of the direct mining costs in small-scale mining. When drilling and blasting practices are poorly implemented the process becomes inefficient and dangerous. The introduction of a proven drill and blast system to artisanal mining offers a number of challenges, with safety being considered the backbone of any sustainable operation and a standard that cannot be compromised.The paper is based on a project at an artisanal cassiterite (tin) mining operation in a small village in the Kayonza District in the Eastern Province of Rwanda. A drill and blast programme utilizing industry best practice was introduced at an underground development end; a raise developed at an inclination of 23 degrees. The underground working is accessed via a 17 degree incline shaft with an operating length of 105 m and serviced by a single drum winder. The winder operates at a speed of about 3.5 m/min hoisting two 1 t wagons from the bottom of the incline to surface for tipping (Figure 1)."

This paper presents a modelling tool that can be used to predict the behaviour of solvent extraction processes. In particular, this model allows calculating metal extraction efficiency as a function of pH, solvent flowrate, stripping flowrate and aqueous feed flowrate in the mixers-settlers. Underground mines require electricity to operate both the main surface fans and auxiliary systems, with primary ventilation systems typically accounting for approximately 40–60% of the mine’s overall electricity consumption. The primary reason for this considerable expense is that most underground ventilation systems are designed for peak demand, regardless of the actual demand, which is commonly dictated by diesel equipment usage in trackless mining operations. Most platinum mines on the Great Dyke in Zimbabwe tend to operate their ventilation systems at this peak level, despite the mine’s air quantity being well in excess of the ‘true’ ventilation needs. This is due to a lack of appropriate ventilation controls. The authors designed and installed a ventilation-on-demand system at one of the bord and pillar platinum mines to minimize the use of redundant air in underground operations. Fourth industrial revolution techniques were applied to the environmental monitoring and tracking systems thereby optimizing air quantity demands. The mine managed to reduce its annual power consumption by 23% through the implementation of manual control and time-of-day scheduling levels of the ventilationon- demand concept. There was also a 6% productivity improvement, mainly attributable to an increased face time as a result of the significant reduction in the re-entry period following a blast. This paper introduces a novel concept of ventilation optimization through digital transformation targeting mainly room and pillar platinum mines. A system was designed, installed, and commissioned, though there is currently an ongoing optimization process to harness the full benefits such as productivity enhancement, reduced power costs, and improved worker health.

ABSTRACT: Geological conditions associated with alpine environments in combination with high overburden in many tunnelling projects lead to squeezing behaviour. The main problems associated with such conditions include large deformations, overstressing of supports, and lack of face stability. In the past during Alpine tunnelling the problem of large displacements incompatible with rockbolt – shotcrete support systems have been solved by leaving gaps in the lining to accommodate excessive deformations. In the late nineties, yielding elements have been developed, which are integrated into the lining. The paper deals with the basic concept, the design and the application of that system, which has been successfully used in several Alpine tunnels. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die geologischen Verhältnisse in den Alpen führen bei großer Überlagerung häufig zu starken Deformationen während des Baues von Tunneln. Die großen Verformungen führen in vielen Fällen zu einer Überbeanspruchung des Ausbaues und Problemen mit der Ortsbruststabilität. Früher ist man dem Problem der Unverträglichkeit des Ausbaues mit den hohen Dehnungen durch Freilassen von Deformationschlitzen im Spritzbeton begegnet. Vor etwa 10 Jahren wurden duktile Stahlelemente entwickelt, welche in die Spritzbetonschale integriert werden. Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit dem Konzept, der Planung und der Ausführung. RÉSUMÉ: Les conditions géologiques dans les Alpes conduisent fréquemment lors d'un grand recouvrement à des déformations fortes pendant la construction des tunnels. Les grandes déformations conduisent dans beaucoup de cas à une surtension du revêtement et à des problèmes avec la stabilité de front de taille. On a fait face plus tôt au problème de l'incompatibilité du revêtement avec les extensions élevées par libérer des rainures dans le béton projeté. Il y a environ 10 ans, des éléments sidérurgiques ductiles qui sont intégrés dans le béton projeté ont été développés. La contribution s'occupe de concept, de planification et de mise en oeuvre.

The Annual General Meeting of the Institute was held in Kelvin House, Johannesburg, on Wednesday, 30th August, 1972. Professor D. D. Howat (President) was in the chair. There were also present sixty-two Fellows, twenty-four Members, two Associates, three Students and eighteen Visitors, making a total of one hundred and nine. The President declared the meeting open at 4.05 p.m. OBITUARIES The President: It is my sad duty to announce the death of six members of this Institute. The first of these is Dr A. J. Orenstein, Honorary Life Fellow, who joined the Institute in 1916 and died on Seventh July. Dr Orenstein became almost a legendary figure in Medicine as a result of his work in the control and elimination of malaria during the digging of the Panama Canal and I believe he was actually engaged working until four days before his death. The other members who have died are: F. Meyer, died on 8th June; S. D. Loxton, Fellow, died on 13th May; J. Innes, Fellow, died on l0th January, 1970; O. B. Prentis, a Member, died on 4th June, and J. Brits, Associate, died on 27th June. As a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased and in sympathy with the bereaved may I ask you to rise and observe a few moments silence. WELCOME TO VISITORS 'On behalf of the Council, may I say how delighted we are to have such a splendid gathering with us on this our Annual General Meeting. In addition to our own newly appointed Minister of Mines, we are also honoured by the presence of the Minister of Mines of Rhodesia, Mr I. B. Dillon. I think not even our oldest members can recall an occasion on which two Ministers of Mines were present at a meeting of the Institute. It is a particular pleasure to welcome them this afternoon. I am happy to say that Minister Koornhof is an Honorary-Vice President of the Institute, and Minister Dillon is an Honorary Member. The presence of your goodselves, gentlemen, with us this afternoon, I am sure underlines the great significance which we believe both countries attach to the economic exploitation of the vast mineral resources of Southern Africa. For over 70 years, this Institute and its members have been making their contribution to this great task of mineral exploitation, and we feel that your presence with us today, is a token of the confidence of your governments in what this Institute and its members have been endeavouring to do. Also present with us today, is Mr R. C. J. Goode, President of the Chamber of Mines, and Honorary President of this Institute. I was going to say I welcome Mr Goode, but it is rather difficult to welcome a man to his own home, and this is the case with Mr Goode. He is a very distinguished and a very recent past president of this Institute and he remains now, as he has been for as long as I can remember, one of our most active and valuable members. This I think, ladies and gentlemen, is the second rather unique feature of this occasion this afternoon, because no one else can recollect an occasion on which the President of the Chamber of Mines was also a past president and an active member of our Institute. A special word of welcome, Mr Goode. Mr Tommy Gibbs, our Government Mining Engineer, is in a somewhat similar position as he is also a member and an old and valued friend of our Institute, - welcome to you, Mr Gibbs. Mention I think, must be made of the fact that we are very glad to have with us Dr A. J. A. Roux, President of the Atomic Energy Board, and Mr Stanley Craib, President of the Associated Scientific and Technical Societies. Then, within the great family of the A.S. and T.S., we have the presidents, or the vice-presidents of I believe 13 of the constituent societies. Understanding the behaviour of plasma arcs is an important part of the design and operation of direct current electric arc furnace smelting processes, which are used in the industrial production of many metallurgical commodities. In recent years numerical and computational modelling techniques have begun to illuminate the complexity of arc behaviour and how it is deeply connected to the thermodynamic and physical properties of the arc plasma. Plasma properties may be estimated from first principles using statistical mechanics methods, but this requires as input some knowledge of the composition of the gas phase that occurs over the process during smelting. In this paper the authors describe a workflow using thermochemistry software to predict the expected gas phase composition through a given process, followed by plasma property calculations using an open-source software tool that has been in development for several years. This tool, 'minplascalc' has been in development for several years and is also described in detail here. The workflow is then applied to the calculation of plasma properties of interest for a variety of historical and current pyrometallurgical processes, and the results are compared. The plasma property data are published in an open-access database for general use.

The objective of the study was to estimate the largest shear displacement that could be expected on a pre-existing fracture located in the repository area, due to the heat release from deposited waste. Two-dimensional numerical analyses using UDEC have been performed. The maximum shear displacement, at the fracture centre, amounts to 0.2 – 13.8 cm depending on fracture parameters. The fracture extension, friction angle and shear stiffness are found to be the most important. Le but de cette étude est de déterminer le déplacement maximal en cisaillement qui puisse se développer le long d'une fracture préexistante en réaction à la chaleur dégagée par les déchets radioactifs enfouis dans la roche. Les analyses numériques ont été réalisées à l'aide du code 2D UDEC. Le déplacement maximal en cisaillement enregistré au centre de la fracture varie entre 0.2 et 13.8 cm en fonction des propriétés de la fracture. L'ouverture, l'angle de friction et la rigidité au cisaillement semblent avoir une influence dominante sur les résultats. Zielsetzung der Studie war die Abschätzung der maximalen Scherverschiebung, die auf einer innerhalb des Endlagergebietes existierenden Rissfläche infolge der Wärmeabstrahlung des eingelagerten Materials zu erwarten war. Es wurden zwei-dimensionale numerische Berechnungen mit UDEC durchgeführt. Die maximale Scherverschiebung im Zentrum der Rissfläche beträgt 0.2-13.8 cm, abhängig von den Risseigenschaften. Dabei hat sich herausgestellt, dass Rissgrösse,Reibungswinkel und Schersteifigkeit den grössten Einfluss haben.

A mine is essentially a series of operations, including drilling and blasting, crushing, milling, flotation, and leaching, that are interconnected and therefore interrelated, with the performance of one operation affecting the performance of another. Optimizing each stage separately without considering the whole system often causes potential economic benefits and energy savings to be missed. However, the PIO methodology is a thorough approach which considers these individual process activities within the context of the whole process. The basic principle is to optimize the process as a whole, rather than each process step in isolation from the others. Metso?s Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) group offers a global consulting service for the mining and construction industries. A significant amount of this consulting work involves process integration and optimization (PIO) studies. When conducting a PIO study, every aspect of the process is considered. In addition to drilling and blasting, transportation, handling and storage, crushing, screening, grinding, flotation, separation, and recovery, other aspects including equipment utilization and energy consumption and even greenhouse gas emissions are also included if necessary. In a PIO project, it is very important to understand what type of material is being processed at any point in time. That is, which domain or domains is the material part of? This is necessary in order to observe the effect of different ore sources (and the blending of sources) on concentrator performance. Linking the ore from the pit to the concentrator required the development of an ore tracking system. As a result, PTI developed a radio-frequency based material tracking system called SmartTag?. This system allows tracking of ore from its source through blasting, run-of-mine (ROM) pads, crushers, intermediate stockpiles, and finally into the concentrator. Using the SmartTag? system, definitive correlations can be made between the performance of the plant and the plant feed characteristics, including the domain from which the feed ore originated. Since its commercialization in 2007, SmartTag? has been used in the majority of PTI?s consulting projects and several permanent systems have been installed worldwide1. Successful applications of the SmartTag? system have encouraged development to allow the system to be used in a wider variety of plants, in particular plants with finer crushing and screening stages. This paper describes how the SmartTag? system is being utilized by PTI and the benefits being gained by its use in PIO projects, as well as presenting some case studies.

Abstract In the Kiirunavaara underground mine, crude ore is transported through ore passes from the production levels to the main haulage level. Failure and stability problems have occurred in some of these ore passes, with increasing frequency as mining depths increase. In this paper, selected results are presented from a research project run by LKAB. The presentation focuses specifically on stability analysis. Numerical models were used to identify failure mechanisms, in conjunction with empirical data and engineering judgment. The most important controlling factors governing failure and damage in ore passes were quantified. A causative model was established in which failure mechanisms and failure development were described. This model was used to formulate a prognosis of future ore pass stability, and for recommending remedial measures. Résumé Le transport du minerai entre les niveaux de production et le niveau principal de transport, à la mine de fer de Kiruna, se fait par des passes à minerai. Avec la profondeur d'extraction grandissante, les problèmes de stabilité au niveau de ces passes à minerai se sont multipliés. Les résultats d'un programme de recherche sur la stabilité des passes à minerai à la mine de fer de Kiruna sont présentés dans cet article. Les mécanismes de rupture ont été identifiés à l'aide de modèles numériques, de données de terrain et du jugement empirique des ingénieurs. Les facteurs principaux controllant l'instabilité des passes à minerai ont aussi été quantifiés. Mit zunehmender Tiefe des Abbaus sind vermehrt Standsicherheitsprobleme in den Sturzschächten aufgetreten, die teilweise zu Verbrüchen geführt haben. In dem vorliegenden Beitrag werden ausgewählte Ergebnisse einer Forschungsarbeit des LKAB präsentiert. Dabei wird der Schwerpunkt auf die Standsicherheitsuntersuchungen gelegt. Zur Ermittlung der Bruchmechanismen wurden numerische Modelle in Verbindung mit empirischen Daten angewendet. Die wichtigsten Einflußfaktoren für das Versagen der Sturzschächte wurden ermittelt. Es wurde ein Modell zur Beschreibung der Bruchmechanismen und des Versagensablaufs aufgestellt. Dieses Modell wurde verwendet, um die Standsicherheit zukünftiger Sturzschächte zu prognostizieren und um Sanierungsmaßnahmen zu erarbeiten.

Biooxidation, and especially the BIOX® process, is a viable, economical and environmentally attractive process to liberate gold hosted in refractory sulfides by oxidatively leaching the sulfides as soluble sulfates. The moderate to high cyanide consumption during the subsequent cyanidiation of the washed biooxidation residue is probably caused by the retention on the solids of labile sulfur species formed during the multi-electron oxidation process of sulfide to sulfate. In this work the nature and mode of transport of the cyanicides in the products from the mesophile BIOX® process, as well as that of the combined mesophile and thermophile bioxidation process, were considered and strategies to reduce cyanide consumption evaluated. It was found that labile sulfur species were the major cyanide consumers in the mesophile biooxidation product, forming predominantly thiocyanate during cyanidation. The transfer of labile sulfur species was only marginally decreased by more intensive and thorough washing of the biooxidation products with warm and hot water, intense stirring and warm caustic leaching. A major reduction in cyanide consumption was however achieved by using a combined mesophile and thermophile biooxidation process. Geotechnical monitoring plays an important role in the detection of operational safety issues in the slopes of open pits. Currently, monitoring companies offer several solutions involving robust technologies that boast highly reliable data and the ability to control risky conditions. The monitoring data must be processed and analysed so as to allow the results to be used for several purposes, thereby providing information that can be used to manage operational actions and optimize mining plans or engineering projects. In this work we analysed monitoring data (pore pressure and displacement) and its correlation with the tension and displacement of the mass of an established failure slope calculated using the finite element method. To optimize the back-analysis, a Python language routine was developed using input data (point coordinates, parameter matrix, and critical section) to use software with the rock mass parameters (cohesion, friction angle, Young’s modulus, and Poisson’s ratio). For the back-analysis, the Mohr-Coulomb criterion was applied with the shear strength reduction technique to obtain the strength reduction factor. The results were consistent with both the measured displacements and the maximum deformation contours, revealing the possible failure mechanism, allowing the strength parameters to be calibrated according to the slope failure conditions, and providing information about the contribution of each variable (parameter) to the slope failure in the study area.

INTRODUCTION This paper was originally presented at the Platinum Adding Value Conference, held at Sun City from the 4th to 6th October 2004. Narrow reef mining may not be applicable to the base metal operations in Zambia, however, it is considered that the methodology used is equally appropriate to the development of technology and mining methods in mining environments other than narrow reef mining. The purpose of this paper is to explore the integration of technology and stoping systems. For the last hundred years the South African narrow reef mining industry has battled to control working costs in a labour intensive industry. It is only through the application of appropriate technology that change will occur. Stoping systems, because it is the stoping method and methodology that is at the heart of the mining system. Introduce a different technology that results in a more efficient stoping system and the mining system will look after itself. The technology applied to stoping in narrow reef mining, over the last 100 years, can be categorised as follows: ? The introduction of pneumatic rockdrills early this century. The cumbersome rig mounted units being replaced by smaller, lighter, hand held units that were then made easier to use with the addition of an air leg. (The so called Swedish method of mining.) As late as the early 1970s some drilling was still being carried out without the assistance of an air leg. ? Scraper winches to replace gravity and shovels to move rock both in the face and the gullies were first introduced in the late 1920s. ? Hydraulic props installed close to the face and capable of applying force against the hangingwall as well as yielding in a controlled manner under dynamic load arrived in the 1960s. In many instances these have now been replaced by yielding elongates fitted with water hydraulic tensioning devices. ? Some people argue that the introduction of tungsten carbide inserts, to improve drilling, was equally important.
