I had the good fortune to attend the above Conference which was held in Kanpur, India, on 11-15 December, 1995. The Conference was held in honour of Professor P.C. Kapur of the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur. Professor Kapur was one of the early students of legendary teacher and researcher of mineral beneficiation, Professor Doug Fuerstenau of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley. I have attended my fair share of international conferences and this one certainly rated at the top of the list on several counts. With an open-hearted hospitality which one might almost take for granted once you have spent some time in India, the organizers of the Conference looked after every need of their guests, including breakfast and transport to and from the conference centre, wonderful traditional lunches and dinners and outstanding entertainment in the evenings. The papers were generally of a high standard, and debate flowed enthusiastically and freely. Several international guests delivered seminal papers in their fields as discussed below.

In April of 2013 a 48 MVA submerged arc furnace producing silicomanganese was excavated in South Africa. One of the areas excavated systematically was the furnace taphole. The aim was to obtain a refractory wear profile of the tap-hole area, together with affected hearth and sidewall refractory. Subsequently, thermodynamic modelling was applied to quantify the potential for chemical reaction between refractory and slag and refractory and metal in the tap-hole area.

This paper describes mining industry funded research that is being undertaken to address the critical gaps and uncertainties in our knowledge so that we can develop new approaches and create more effective ways for predicting the reliability of rock slopes in large open pit mines. It is envisaged that this research will not only lead to more effective pit slope design but further reduce the potential for unforseen geotechnical risks by enabling the geotechnician to communicate the risks more effectively with management and to optimise site specific control measures. To achieve this, several research tasks are in hand. The first is to accurately represent the structured rock mass with a 3D computer model (Siromodel) that creates polyhedral blocks from structural distribution data characterised by position, orientation and persistence. Siromodel is being coupled with particle flow and other numerical codes to evaluate how the structured rock mass deforms in the stress environment of an open pit and how a candidate failure surface may propagate through the dilating rock mass along the path of the least shear and/or tension resistance. A beta version of the Siromodel software has been distributed to 20 Sponsor mine sites for technical evaluation. The end state is to develop methods of analysis that characterise the reliability of a described candidate surface, and the probability of the candidate surface propagating to failure, recognising that the rock mass strength may well be defined in a different way than before.

"Geotechnical stability analysis and design in open pit mines requires access to representative geological, structural, hydrogeological, and rock mass models. The quality and quantity of collected geomechanical data used to build such models can have significant implications in the design of safe and economically viable slopes. Data collection is a continuous process throughout the life of a mine. The process starts from exploration to conceptual/preliminary feasibility, feasibility, design and construction, operations (early production/late production), and mine closure.As geomechanical data is often limited at an early stage of a project, the estimated variability of the geotechnical factors may be larger than the actual data variability. This can potentially result in a conservative selection of the pit slope angle. Collecting additional geomechanical data at later stages of the mine development may contribute to reducing the uncertainty associated with the geotechnical properties and a steeper slope angle may be used for the design. This can result in significant economic benefits.This paper investigates the impact of access to new data over time, following a series of geomechanical data collection campaigns, on design decisions. This is illustrated by comparing the resulting slope design, at three stages of the mine project, at a South African open pit mine. To demonstrate this, a series of slope stability analyses were performed using limit equilibrium tools. For each project stage, the slope angle design was modified until a similar probability of failure of 5% or less was obtained. The corresponding factor of safety distributions for each project stage were then compared to evaluate the impact of collecting additional data on the resulting slope design.The results showed that data variability can differ significantly from one project stage to another. Data variability may be greater at more advanced project stages (i.e. a wider distribution of the factor of safety). Furthermore, the results showed that, even for the cases with greater variability, steeper slope angles were possible at more advanced stages for the proposed design requirement (probability of failure < 5%). In this investigation, as more data became available, the uncertainty associated with data variability could be sufficiently reduced to allow the selection of less conservative slope angles. This can be used as a managerial tool in developing data collection strategies and allocating the necessary funds, and can lead to important economic benefits to the mining operation."

"A study conducted at 22 operating mines in the southern African region indicated that each mine employs about five management and improvement methods with roots in the manufacturing industry. All respondents reported the implementation of cost-saving initiatives, whereas 80% of the mines are affected by restructuring. TQM, Six Sigma, BPM, and TOC were found to be the most prevalent manufacturing management and improvement methods used. A mechanistic vs systemic evaluation of the suitability of these methods to bring about positive change in the industry suggested that complex, ever-changing mining systems are better served by a systemic flow-based approach, which is embedded in methods such as TOC, JIT, TPS, and Lean Production. These methods, however, lack industry presence, possibly because they do not effectively deal with the unique challenges associated with the mining environment. It is argued that successful mining business management and improvement depends on management’s ability to deal effectively with mining industry-specific requirements, the integration of the geologymining- plant system, and the implementation of systemic flow-based principles in all aspects of mining. IntroductionThe study aims to explore the use of manufacturing management and improvement methodologies in the southern African mining industry. Considering the unique challenges associated with mining operations, attention is given to the applicability of the most commonly used manufacturing methodologies in the tactical, operational, and strategic environments. The article endeavours to stimulate more research and debate in an unexplored field of study."

The Conference Minerals & Materials &apos;96 was held in Somerset West, South Africa, from 31st July to 2nd August, 1996. It was organized by the Universities of Stellenbosch and Cape Town, the Cape Technikon, and the Western Cape Branch of The South African institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM). The three-day Conference was attended by 180 delegates, representing countries such as Australia, South Africa, United Kingdom, Finland, Sweden, Germany, Poland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The programme and associated exhibition were well organized, and each of the delegates received two volumes of proceedings containing the 77 papers presented at the Conference.

It is evident from most admired companies, globally, that they drive key priorities such as teamwork, customer focus, fair treatment of employees, initiative and innovation into their organisations. It is clearly proofed in all the research that the role of the human factor, and therefore human behaviour, is pivotal to companies striving to accomplish goals such as competitiveness, customer delight, high quality, growing productivity as well as a safety-committed work force. The challenge of leadership is to change the worker’s poor perception of safety to an excited, empowered, valued employee who is continuously committed to the achievement of high levels of health, safety and conformance – the challenge therefore is to transform from within. Any work force needs a set of behavioural rules which work for it – including safety rules and critical safety behaviours, which are accepted through involvement leadership, encouragement and support.

Rock fall accidents continue to be the main cause of fatal and serious injuries in the mining industry. Although there has been an improvement in the FOG (falls of ground) related fatal and serious injuries over the past few years, the rate is still too high. New technology has made it possible to reduce this rate significantly. FOG accidents imply failure of the support system or the design of the support system in use. In this paper we deal with the latest technology available to assist the mines to reduce the rates of FOG related injuries and fatalities.

The concentration of cassiterite at Iscor&apos;s Uis Mine is described, and information is given on aspects of the concentration of iron ore at Thabazimbi and Sishen Mines. At Uis, a very Iow-grade tin ore is concentrated by three-stage jigging, spiral concentration, and tabling to give a high-grade concentrate with a recovery of 80 per cent of the tin. A Iow-grade tantalite-columbite concentrate is also produced. The possibility of recovering mica, the use of sluice boxes instead of spirals, and the recovery of cassiterite from minus 45 µm material are being investigated. At the two iron-ore mines, heavy-medium separation is applied to size fractions larger than 0,5 mm. The types of ferrosilicon and the circuits used for the recovery of ferrosilicon from the various dilute-medium circuits are described. The spiral-concentration plant being installed at Thabazimbi for the treatment of the minus 0,5 mm portion of the ore is described.

ABSTRACT: Stiffness controlled test procedures performed with servo-controlled shear systems are the most versatile for simulating the wide range of boundary conditions expected in nature. Examples of a function controlled procedure in addition to dilatation controlled procedures are discussed for different characteristic behaviours. "The FASTMELT ® process was developed as an alternative to blast furnace ironmaking; in this process, high-quality molten iron is produced using direct reduction followed by high-temperature slag/metal separation. In this study, iron recovery and phosphorus removal from oolitic highphosphorus haematite using the FASTMELT® process was investigated. The performance of two reducing agents, coal and wood char, was compared. Direct reduction experiments indicated that with optimized reductant addition, the ore-char and ore-coal briquettes attained metallization values of 82% and 78%, respectively, and residual carbon contents of 0.24 and 2.35%, respectively. The slag/metal separation experiments revealed that molten iron containing 0.41% phosphorus and 0.021% silicon (by mass) was produced from optimally reduced ore-char briquettes, and molten iron containing 0.78% phosphorus and 0.91% silicon from optimally reduced ore–coal briquettes. The study indicates that carbonaceous materials with high CO2 reactivity are suitable for use in the FASTMELT ® process for phosphorus removal and iron recovery from oolitic high-phosphorus haematite. IntroductionIn China, the general depletion of iron-rich mineral reserves has led to many efforts to exploit low-grade and refractory ironcontaining resources for ironmaking (Liu et al., 2014). The efficient utilization of the highphosphorus oolitic haematite resources in central China has received considerable attention. The available resources of this material total approximately 3.0 billion tons. The oolitic units in the ore exhibit an onionlike structure with phosphorus-containing gangue layers of 2–10 µm thickness. The best concentrate produced from these resources contains approximately 50% iron (Fe) and 0.8–1.2% phosphorus (P) (by mass) (Ai, Yu, and Wei, 2009; Song et al., 2013; Wu, Wen, and Cen, 2011). Further removal of phosphorus from these ores using conventional beneficiation methods is not possible."

Two methods of stress measurements have been executed on the surface and underground to con-struct an oil storage cavern using hydro-fracturing and overcoring method. The first measurement has been performed to make a design of the caverns before excavating and the second to confirm the stress state during excavation. Six measurements have been carried out in the hydro-fracturing test at the depths between –17.8 and 54.5m from the sea level and a single measurement in the overcoring test in a single borehole at the depth of –21m from the sea level. The ratios of the maximum horizontal to vertical stress measured using hydro-fracturing and overcoring method are 2.95 and 3.1, respectively. Also, the orientations of the maximum horizontal stress are N53E and N58E. These measurements show that both methods give almost same results and significant horizontal stresses are acting on this cavern. Deux méthodes de mesure de contrainte ont étè exécutées sur la surface de terrain et sous la terre pour construire une cavité de stockage de pétrole en utilisant l’hydro-fracturing et l’overcoring. La première mesure a étè faite pour le plan des cavités avant l’excavation et le seconde pour con-firmer l’état de contrainte durant l’excavation. Six measures ont étè faites dans le teste de l’hydro-fracturing à la profondeur entre –17.8 et 54.5m depuis l’élèvation maritime. Une seule mesure a étè faite dans le teste de l’overcoring dans une seule trou de songdage à la profondeur de –21m. Le ratios de la maximale contrainte horizontale à la contrainte verticale mesure par les deux méthodes sont 2.95 et 3.1, respectivement. Les orientations de la maximale contrainte horizontale sont N53E et N58E. Ce montre que les deux méthodes donnent presque m me résultats et la contrainte im-portante est activée sur ces cavités. Zwei Druckmessungen wurden durchgeführt auf der Erdoberfläche und im Innern von Ölspeicher-kavernen unter vergleichender Anwendung des Hydrofraktionierungs- und des Kernbohrungsver-fahrens. Die erste Messung wurde durchgeführt um einen Plan der Kavernen vor der Herstellung zu erstellen und die zweite um die Druckverhältnisse während der Bohrung zu überprüfen. Sechs Messugnen wurden mit der Hydrofraktionierungsmethode bei einer Tiefe von 17,8m und 54,5m unter dem Meeresspiegel und eine einzige Messung mit der Kernbohrungsmethode in einem Bohr-loch bei einer Tiefe von 21m unter dem Meeresspiegel vorgenommen. Das Verhältnis von maxi-malem horizontalem zu vertikalem Druck bei der Hydrofraktions- und der Kernbohrungsmedthode ist 2,95 bzw. 3,1. Die Bezugspunkte des maximalen horizontalen Drucks in beiden Verfahren sind N53E und N58E.

In extracting base metals from ore bodies, sulphide as well as oxide, the main environmental concern is sulphur, whether in the form of sulphurous gases or sulphate in liquid form. Generally sulphur is in over supply in developed countries mainly because of strict legislation to capture it. In developing countries on the other hand there is usually a shortage of sulphur because of less strict environmental legislation. Africa falls in this second category and the African continent imports substantial amounts of sulphur despite the fact that large quantities of sulphur is emitted by smelters, thermal power stations, coal mines, fertilizer manufacturers and others. Other than making acid from gaseous emissions, existing methods to capture sulphur from gaseous and liquid effluents are uneconomical and it ends up in the environment either as ammonium sulphate (from gaseous effluents) or as gypsum (from liquid effluents). The CSIR?s Environmentek and Pyroserv has developed a process whereby gaseous sulphur emissions and sulphates in liquid effluents can be economically captured and converted into elemental sulphur and metal carbonates. The elemental sulphur is of high purity as it is precipitated from a gas stream and is readily marketable. The metal carbonates (barium or calcium) can be recycled back to the process or marketed. The only harmful byproduct of the process is carbon dioxide. Should natural gas or methane be available the carbon dioxide could be reduced by about one third. Should solar, wind or hydro energy be available to generate hydrogen the carbon dioxide emissions would be zero. Employing this technology could make Africa independent of sulphur imports and furthermore reduce the impact of acid rain and seepage of sulfate from gypsum and other waste dumps into the environment.

Broken Hill Mines-1968, edited by M. Radmanovich and J. T. Woodcock, published by The Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Melbourne, 613 pages. Price $A15. This volume, containing some 65 technical papers, was produced for the 1968 annual conference of the Australasian Institute held at Broken Hill to mark the 75th Anniversary of that Institute, founded at Broken Hill in 1893. That conference also coincided with the 85th Anniversary of the discovery of the Broken Hill mining field. This closely reflects the position in this country, where the Witwatersrand gold fields were discovered in 1886, and our South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy will in March, 1969 be celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the forerunners of our Institute. There is a comprehensive report of the geology of the Broken Hill area and the mineralogy of the ore body, and there are reports on the mining methods and the metallurgical procedures which have been developed over 85 years of operation of one of the great mining fields of the world. The value of most of the papers is enhanced by a large number of illustrations and photographs. An early section covers the academic and practical aspects of rock mechanics, prospecting, and exploration techniques are described in some detail. A third of the volume is devoted to mining, with papers on 26 aspects. The breadth of the coverage gives an indication of much specialized development, research, and consequent maturity in all departments. The detailed treatment of metallurgical aspects such as sizings of individual mineral particles throughout the milling stages and the development of an on-stream analysis system for lead will commend this volume to the specialist. The committee responsible for the production of this volume, which brings together much information previously only to be found after searching through numerous publications, are to be congratulated on a well produced comprehensive review of many aspects of the mining and metallurgical fields. The Great Dyke of Zimbabwe constitutes the world?s second largest reserve of platinum group elements (PGE) after the Bushveld Complex in neighbouring South Africa. Within the Great Dyke, economic concentrations of PGE are restricted to sulphide disseminations of the Main Sulphide Zone (MSZ), which are currently mined at the Ngezi, Unki, and Mimosa mines. Near-surface oxidized MSZ ores have a large potential. Their total resources are in the range of ca. 160 ? 250 Mt; however, all previous attempts to extract the PGE from this ore type proved uneconomic due to low PGE recoveries (<< 50 per cent) achieved by conventional metallurgical methods. Within the ores of pristine, sulphide-bearing MSZ, the PGE are bimodally distributed. Platinum occurs mainly in the form of discrete platinum group mineral (PGM) grains (mainly bismuthotellurides, sulphides, and arsenides), whereas approximately 80 per cent of the Pd (and some Rh) is hosted in pentlandite. Within the oxidized MSZ ores, the PGE are polymodally distributed. Whereas arsenide- and sulphide-PGMs, making up ca. 25 per cent of the original Pt content of the ore, largely remain stable (relict PGMs), the remaining PGMs are disintegrated. The base metal sulphides are destroyed, partly releasing their base metal and PGE contents, and are replaced by iron oxides or hydroxides. Unspecified amounts of the PGE are redistributed and either form secondary PGMs, are found in chemically and mineralogically ill-defined (Pt/Pd)-oxides or hydroxides, or in iron-hydroxides, Mn?Co-hydroxides, and in secondary silicates. The problematic processing of oxidized MSZ ores is attributable to their complex nature and polymodal distribution of the PGE, prohibiting a significant upgrading of the ores by conventional metallurgical methods. Therefore, only bulk leaching methods are viable for ore treatment, and novel metallurgical methods have to be developed for the processing of these ores. Our ongoing work aims at locating the PGE in their mineralogical form in order to understand the mineralogical balance of the PGE in the ores and thereby facilitate the evaluation of metallurgical options for their recovery. A short overview on options and recent advances regarding the recovery of the PGE from oxidized ores is given.

One of the most significant features of iron ore concentrate (pelletising feed) is the specific surface area (SSA) that affects the achievement of desirable pellet properties. There are various methods to determine this parameters and currently, the most common is the Blaine air permeability method. However, due to the simplified assumptions including spherical and identical particles and 50% bed porosity, the Blain test does not provide accurate results. In fact, these two suppositions are far from reality. In this research, comparison of SSA measurement ways are investigated, containing laser diffraction testing and Blaine air permeability, on samples with different SSA, obtained from Ball mill and high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR). The output data showed that the calculated amounts of SSA by means of laser analysis were far greater than any other one. Furthermore, in the same results of Blaine air permeability tests on samples comminuted by different grinding methods, it was observed that the SSA figures from the laser diffraction method for HPGR products were almost 800 units greater than Ball mill ones.
