The value creation with kaolin clays depends on removing the colored impurities which manifests in to higher brightnessone of the most sought after properties on applications such as paper coating, paint and others. The processes for removing impurities include magnetic separation, froth flotation and selective flocculation. While the flotation and selective flocculation processes exploit the physico-chemical differences between the surface properties, the magnetic separation uses the bulk magnetic susceptibility differences between the diamagnetic clay and ferro- and para-magnetic nature of the impurities. The major advantage with magnetic separation remains high yield and no or low reagent usage. However, the magnetic separation technology suffers from low separation efficacy when finer colored impurities (<1 µm) are encountered in the feed. Use of stronger magnetic intensities during magnetic separation showed limited success; nonetheless the adverse effect due to finer size range remains a dominant effect even at 5 Tesla magnetic field. Furthermore, the presence of diamagnetic colored impurities irrespective of their sizes can not be removed. Cytec Industries has recently developed a ?bolt-on? chemical enhancement technology for magnetic separation that essentially embraces the best product performance attributes of flotation and selective flocculation while keeping the chemical usage to a minimum level and using the readily available magnetic separation equipment. The paper will outline the technology and illustrate optimization work at pilot plant magnet on a wide variety of crude accommodating the process needs and plant limitations. The major advantages of chemical enhancement technology to magnetic separation include: 1) simple extension to existing magnetic separation technology, 2) ability to produce comparable product in quality with cost effectiveness compared to flotation and selective flocculation, 3) removal of impurity minerals over wide size range, 4) removing non-magnetic impurities, 5) providing robust process with high process yield and 6) operation-friendly nature. Furthermore, chemical enhancement technology for magnetic separation has also emerged as a platform for re-moving impurities at low levels in other mineral systems as well.

"With the increasing popularity of lithium cobalt oxide in lithium ion battery industry, which is driven by new energy vehicle and mobile device applications, the demand of cobalt is also growing rapidly in recent years. There is a significant trend of increasing investment on cobalt capacity in China, and the automation renovation is considered as an option of improving production efficiency. This study aimed at evaluating the practicability of stainless permanent cathode blank and automatic stripping process in cobalt electrowinning process. The purpose is to replace the old starter sheet process in cobalt electrowinning, which so far was used by most of cobalt refineries in China, but very labor intensive and exposed operators to serious aerosols that contained both cobalt and acid. In the old starter sheet process, the initial cobalt starter sheet is produced onto a plate made of titanium, while the titanium cathode blank and hanger bar fit the critical corrosive environment but is lack of mechanical strength for automatic production which has been mature in copper electrowinning process. To evaluate the proper materials instead of titanium, the coupon corrosion tests with different raw materials including 316L and other stainless steel grades were held for several months in production environment at a cobalt tank house in China. Following the comparison between titanium and other tested materials, a pilot production test in a cobalt tank house is also on-going.INTRODUCTION Cobalt has been known in early China and used in pottery glazes, and the ancient Greeks and Romans used its compounds to make colored glass since long time ago. The blue on the colored porcelain from the Tang Dynasty in China was also due to the presence of cobalt compounds. The word cobalt is known being derived from the German kobalt, from kobold meaning ""goblin"", because the cobalt-bearing blue ore, CoAsS, was called kobaltin in Europe in the Middle Ages, it may have been thought to be harmful to the health of the miners because of arsenic in the ores."

A new optical sorting system based on a complex image analysis and high definition imaging has been developed by Comex. The image analysis is based on high definition cameras of different types and advanced filtration tools for verification of waste particles. Different mineral properties are used to identify the processed material. The system is further combined with a high speed rejection mechanism based on FPGA technology and operating in real time conditions. This provides a minimal error when removing waste particles from the sorted material.

"Understanding adsorption mechanism of polymeric organic process modifierssuch as carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) on talc hasbeen a major challenge due to anisotropic nature of talc basal planes and edge surfaces. The main objective of this study is to investigate the adsorption of CMC on the basal planes and edge surfaces of talc.Smooth basal plane and edge surfaces of talc were prepared successfully by simple cleavage and sophisticated ultramicrotome cutting method, respectively. The prepared surfaces were characterized by atomic force microscope (AFM) imaging to be sufficiently smooth for colloidal probe force measurements using AFM. Anisotropic surface charge characteristics were determined,with the basal planes to carry a permanent negative surface charge and edge surfaces featuring a pH-dependent charge characteristic. The adsorption of CMC on talc basal plane and edge surfaces at pH 9 in KClaqueous solutions of various ionic strengths wasinvestigated by in situ AFM imaging technique. Themorphology of adsorbed CMC on talc basal planes and edge surfaces was found to be significantly different, due to different binding mechanisms involved. Interaction of CMC with the talc basal plane was found to bedominated by hydrophobic interactions while its binding with the talc edge surface was mainly through chemical complexation and hydrogen bond. The amount of CMC adsorbed on both talc basal planes and edge surfaces increased with increasing ionic strengthof solutions. The methodology developed in our study opens the door to probe polymer adsorption on anisotropic phyllosilicate surfaces, which can help us better understand the mechanism of polymer adsorption on specific mineral faces."

The status of utilization of copper ore resources, and the application and development of biohydrometallury technology in the world is reviewed. Based on the characterization of Zambia?s copper resources, biohydrometallurgy technology is shown to be a practical approach to extract and utilize the enormous low grade copper resource, such as ore tailings and low grade copper ore in this country. Through the cooperation of CSU, China and MMMD, Zambia, ?CNMC-CSU Demonstration Base of Biohydrometallurgy Technology in Zambia? was launched and several biohydrometallurgy plants are being constructed. This indicates that the biohdyrometallurgy technology would be applied soon in Zambia and in the whole Africa. Biohydrometallurgy technology stands as an efficient alternative to the traditional pyrometallurgy process and it can be the key to unlock mineral resources value. Oxidized zinc ores are the main source of zinc metal except sulfides. To have a better understanding about the performance of smithsonite and the main gangue, quartz, in flotation, the aggregation behaviors of smithsonite and quartz in water were confirmed by different techniques (sedimentation tests and optical microscopy). The experimental results show that smithsonite and quartz particles aggregate in the pH range 7.5-11. The results of zeta potential suggest that the aggregation does not correlate with the DLVO theory, when the iso-electric point of smithsonite and quartz is 8.0 and 2 respectively. When the solution pH is less than 8.0, smithsonite has an opposite charge to the quartz particles. Electrostatic adsorption makes effort on these two kinds of particles according to DLVO theory. Whereas, solution chemistry calculation shows the pH range 8-11 corresponds to hydroxide formation, suggesting that this is the species responsible for aggregation. And their concentrations are much higher in sodium hydroxide system than that in sodium carbonate system. Aggregation of smithsonite and quartz due to the flocculation action of zinc hydroxide is proposed.

To look into the ionic release laws of the sulphide tailings in some copper mine, the effects of the soaking period, temperature, oscillating speed, and pH of the solution on the heavy metals ionic re-lease were investigated through static soaking leaching experiments. The results show that Cu2+, Zn2+, Pb2+, Cr3+ are of different leaching behaviors with soaking period. The ionic concentration in soaking solution for four ions has a great gap. Zn2+ is more easily released out of sulfide tailings than Cu2+, Pb2+, Cr3+ , and the ion release concentrations are not proportion to their contents in the tailings. The time for each ion to reach its maximum concentration are different. The minimum concentration do not occur at the first day. Each ion concentration shows different fluctuation characteristic during soaking process. Solution pH, oscillating speed, and temperature affect the releases of Cu2+, Zn2+, Pb2+, Cr3+ out of the tailings to different extent. The effect of pH value on ion re-lease for the four ions ranks as Zn2+>Cu2+>Pb2+>Cr3+, the oscillating speed ranks as Pb2+>Zn2+>Cu2+>Cr3+, and the temperature ranks as Cr3+>Pb2+>Zn2+>Cu2+.

In this study, selective flocculating of diaspore using anion macromolecular reagent as flocculant was tested to separate diaspore from alum-silicate minerals. Firstly, the effect of pH on settling behavior of diaspore and kaolinite dispersions has been investigated. The results show that the maximum settling speed of diaspore and kaolinite appeared re-spectively at pH7 and pH3.33 which is close to the point of zero charge (PZC) of diaspore (6.8) and kaolinite(3.5). This result is in well agreement with the double electric layer theory. Secondly, the settling behavior of diaspore and kaolinite particles in different anion flocculant solution have been researched. The results indicate that flocculant solution concentration significantly affect the selectivity and the flocculating performance of anion molecular. In high concentration solution, both diaspore and kaolinite have faster settling rate compared to blank solution. How-ever, in low concentration solution, the anion macromolecular can enhance the settling rate of diaspore remarkably but has no apparent effect on the settling rate of kaolinite. This result suggests that the tested anion flocculant is a promising reagent for de-silica of diasporic bauxite. Lastly, FTIR method was employed to probe the adsorption mechanism of flocculant on diaspore and kaolinite. The results reveal that there are anion flocculant characteristic bands on the spectra of diaspore but no obvious characteristic bands of flocculant on the FTIR spectrum of kaolinite. This result is in good correspondence with settling test.

Cenospheres is a sandlike hollow sphere component of the fly ash that is collected in coal-burning electric power generating plants. Metal coated particles have been widely used in industries. Magnetron sputtering method which was used to coat copper film on the surface of the cenospheres is a widely used coating technique in large surface metal coating. A newly designed equipment is used to make the fine particle coating can be carried out because the fine particle is hard to disperse and it must make the particle keep moving to let every direction of the particle be coated. The copper film coated is compact, smooth, even and without uncoated spots under the optical microscopy and SEM. The film has good affinity to the cenosphere surface. The film does not separate with cenoshpere surface even when the cenosphere is crushed. The XRD, SEM, XPS, SPM was used to study the copper film characteristic. It is shown that using this newly designed magnetic sputtering equipment can coat high quality copper nanofilm on the cenoshpere surface.

The energy dispersion X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) analysis technique is a rapid and accurate method for describing sample?s element component and percentage composition. On the base of profound research for the national and international development and research condition, the author researched the EDXRF analyze technique and the EDXRF analyzer?s principle in depth, the difficulties and the key points for research and development of EDXRF analyzer; gave a scheme for re-search of bench EDXRF analyzer; researched some algorithms used in energy spectrum analysis; developed the energy spectrum analysis software based on the Visual C++ 6.0; together with the energy spectrum analysis software, the author designed and processed the structural of the bench XRF analyzer and integrated the import X-ray tube, thermoelectrically cooled Si-PIN photodiode X-ray detector and pulse amplitude analyzer as a model machine. The result shows: The model machine can be used in multi-element analysis at the same time for different types of dry mineral samples, with fast analysis speed, accurate model and high stability.

"During mechanical flotation of fine liberation sized complex rare earth ores, a large fraction of ultrafine valuable mineral particles are lost to tailings. Fine gangue mineral particles can be entrapped within the froth phase and be floated together with target mineral particles. Another common challenge in ultrafine rare earth mineral flotation is the formation of a sticky froth (excessively stable froth). Thus, the improvement of the flotation of fine and ultrafine rare earth bearing minerals through appropriate cell design and reagent selection is highly desirable. The aim of this study is to investigate the performance of a pico-bubble cavitation flotation column in improving selective recovery of ultrafine rare-earth elements (REEs) bearing minerals from complex and low-grade ores. In pico-bubble cavitation column, very small bubbles are generated which are capable of attaching to ultrafine particles and consequently modifying their surface properties. The overall effect of these processes should lead to improved flotation selectivity and recovery of ultrafine RE mineral particles. In this paper, the effects of a number of flotation operating variables on recovery and grade of REE minerals was investigated using a continuous pilot scale pico-bubble column flotation. At the flotation conditions used in this study, subtle monazite upgrade was observed while gangue Fe oxide was preferentially floated even in the presence of depressants. INTRODUCTION Rare earth elements (REEs) have unique properties such as superconductivity and catalytic activity, and are in high demand for a large number of cutting-edge technologies in the modern world including the production of mobile phones, fuel cells, displays, permanent magnets for wind power generation, high-capacity batteries, green energy devices, etc (Naumov, 2008). REEs tend to be intimately associated within many minerals, and are rarely found in high concentrations in deposits for economic extraction. Up to now, among over 250 minerals containing REEs, bastnasite (Ce), monazite (Ce, Th and La) and xenotime (Y) are the three main minerals that contain sufficient grade of REEs for commercial exploitation (Zhang and Edwards, 2012). The deposits that contain bastnäsite, monazite and xenotime usually have complicated mineral compositions, with various valuable minerals of fine embedded grain sizes in association with complex gangue minerals. In order to ensure liberation of the REEs minerals, fine grinding to less than 30 µm is necessary. This fine grinding leads to difficulty in recovering a large proportion of fine and ultrafine particles in separation processes such as flotation (Trahar and Warren, 1976). Consequently, highly liberated and ultrafine fine valuable REEs particles are lost into tailings during traditional mechanical flotation. Besides, the formation of extremely sticky and stable froth inhibits the drainage of hydrophobic particles. Thus, improving flotation of rare earth bearing minerals, particularly the ultrafine size range, is highly desirable."

Today, large size mechanical flotation cells of 100 to 300 m3 are used in rougher operation in different flotation industrial plants, in Chile and worldwide. However, in spite of the advances in fundamental research and the notable growing in equipment size, with more complete instrumentation systems, there are still a lack of reliable data for industrial flotation modeling and simulation to advance in better control systems design. In this work, a model of a rougher flotation circuit, based on operating variables and parameters fitted from industrial data, obtained in some previous work, is used to develop a set of logic rules in order to aid operating decisions. The simulator was first used to sensitize the effect of changing the froth depth profile on target variables, and then to find out the best profile to reject common disturbances coming into the plant. The flotation circuit simulator was redesigned to incorporate an expert system following the proposed control algorithm. Several tests were performed to evaluate the control responses to different correlated series of input variables, such as feed grade, tonnage, particle size distribution, and solid percentage. Flotation researches of indium-beard marmatite from the Dulong multi-metallic ore in the Yunnan Province of China has been studied in order to improve the grades and recoveries of zinc and indium of the zinc concentrate in the Dulong concentration plant. The experimental results have shown that copper sulfate mixed with a chemical reagent X-1 as the activator in the marmatite flotation produced a much better beneficiation than copper sulfate alone, increasing the zinc and indium recoveries of 10% and 6%, respectively, while the concentrate grades were unchanged. Also, the new activator acted well around pH 10, allowing large savings on lime consumption in the marmatite flotation. In addition, it has been found that a sufficient activated time of activator with ore slur-ry in the flotation is needed to achieve good beneficiation of the marmatite ore.

"IT enabled platforms are the key to provide an integrated view of the business activity or an enterprise as a whole. Attempts to integrate all functions in an enterprise such as mine-to-market initiatives, wherever and to whatever extent implemented, have provided significant benefits to the industry. The transformative potential of IT enabled integration platforms is illustrated in this communication from our own work in this field. TCS PREMAP (Platform for the Realization of Materials and Products) is a knowledge-driven engineering design and development platform which leverages modeling and simulation and artificial intelligence into the engineering design process. We illustrate the customization of this generic platform for the design and optimization of mineral processing plants in an integrated manner. TCS PEACOCK (Process and Equipment Analytics for Optimization and Control) has been developed to enable automation of data analytics in the operating plants. We illustrate its utility and power in improving the plant performance with the help of case studies from our work on pelletization of iron ores and optimization of flotation plants. INTRODUCTION We are living in an exciting digital era. With the advent of cloud computing and social media on the one hand and rapid advances being made in several research areas of interest to us in the minerals and metals industry such as artificial intelligence (AI) & machine learning, robotics, unmanned vehicles including drones, big data analytics, 3D printing, sensor technologies, renewable energies and internet of things (IoT), many disruptive transformations in our industry are on the horizon. Recent advances in information technology (IT) and knowledge engineering, in combination with appropriate domain expertise, that is, our enhanced understanding of the underlying science of mining and mineral processing operations and the availability of a variety of powerful modeling-simulation tools make it possible to address the challenging problems facing the mining and mineral processing industry, in an integrated manner."

Vanadium-titanium magnetite from Panzhihua was crushed with open and closed circuit process by high pressure grinding roller (HPGR). The particle size characteristics of the crushed product were analyzed and the micro-cracks generated by HPGR during the crushing process were studied. The results showed that, in crushed products, the reduction ratio increases and the size distribution becomes more uniform with increasing of the pressure on roller?s surfaces. The fine fraction content of crushing products from -3.2 mm classification closed-circuit by HPGR increases obviously compared with that by Jaw Crusher and particle size distribution is more uniform. Large amount of intra-crystalline cracks and cleavage cracks are generated in vanadium-titanium magnetite crushed by HPGR, which makes the specific surface area larger and Bond grinding work index (objective particle size is 0.074 mm) decreased by 14.05% than that by Jaw Crusher. And the liberation degree of monomer of the product crushed by HPGR increased compared with that by Jaw Crusher with the similar fineness of grinding. In comminution research, ore breakage and wear are usually studied independently of one another. Much of this is due to the fact that wear is usually a slow process compared to ore kage. However, the abrasion wheel test used to determine the abrasive wear contribution to total steel media wear provides the opportunity to study not only abrasive wear and friction but also ore breakage. In this paper, we will explore the use of the abrasion wheel wear test device to study abrasive wear, friction and ore breakage using standard Ottawa foundry sand. We will look into the feasibility of applying the work index as well as t10methodologies to this test set-up. We will also look at how the work index results evolve with abrasive wear and friction. We will then discuss the merits of pursuing the use of this abrasion wheel test for not only wear characterization but also breakage characterization.

In order to investigate the effect of nanobubbles on adsorption of surfactant on mineral surface, the nanobubbles on the surface of calcite with -37µm fraction in the sodium oleate system were controlled by pressurization and decompression to mixing vessel. Subsequently, the adsorption amount of sodium oleate on the surface of calcite were detected by ultraviolet spectrum at different stirring times and different pressures. At the same time, the nanobubbles on the calcite surface were imaged with atomic force microscopy (AFM). In addition, a homemade vacuum Hallimond tube device was used for the flotation of single mineral, and the grade and recovery of minerals in concentrate was used to determine the influence of the nanobubbles on flotation. The experimental results showed that a large number of nanobubbles were found on the calcite surface by AFM under the dissolved oxygen difference (DOD) condition of -4 mg/L. And a large difference in adsorption capacity of sodium oleate on the surface of calcite was observed under different air pressure conditions. It indicated that the ambient pressure had a certain effect on the adsorption of sodium oleate on the calcite surface, and this effect did not depend on the constant low pressure or constant normal pressure, but depended on the changing process of pressure. The single mineral flotation experiment results indicated the recovery of calcite under decompression condition (formation condition of nanobubbles) was 1.5-2 times that under constant normal pressure, and the flotation time is much shorter. Moreover, the recovery under constant normal pressure was greatly influenced by flotation time. In this paper, only one aspect of the effect of nanobubbles on mineral flotation was preliminarily explored. It was confirmed that after vacuum-pumping, the adsorption of sodium oleate on calcite surface could be increased, the flotation time also was greatly reduced and the recovery of calcite was increased.

A moderate thermophilic microorganisms, has been isolated (45?) from a typical sulphide mine in the region of Mo Jiang located in the southwest of China. The culture has been used to extract copper from chalcopyrite concentrates obtained from De Xing copper mine. The majority of experiments were carried out in 300mL Erlenmeyer flasks containing 150mL volumes of mineral suspension. Effects of some variable parameters such as solids concentration, pH and the concentrations of inorganic nutrients on the bioleaching of chalcopyrite obtained from De Xing copper mine were investigated. For a given concentrate the most important factor affecting the fractional copper extraction was the size of the mineral particles. The overall rate of leaching was found to be limited by the area of mineral surface. The attack started in cracks and genetic defects and finally reached the whole chalcopyrite surface. As a consequence of this, the ore showed strongly cracks. The additive of ferrous sulfate increases the bacteria activity, but did not improve chalcopyrite bioleaching. The results indicate that the nature and relative proportions of the various minerals present have been shown to be important factors.

In this paper, the molybdenite flotation tailing of cleaner-scavenger bank which has a mass of very fine particles has been taken as raw ore to be processed by flotation with/without ultrasonic. The effect of ultrasonic frequency, intensity, processing time and uploading location on molybdenite flotation efficiency is investigated by four-factor three-level orthogonal experiment, and the effect significances of these ultrasonic variables to molybdenite flotation efficiency have also been evaluated. Single-factor analysis of variance is conducted to investigate whether the effect of ultrasonic on molybdenum ore flotation efficiency is significant or not. The samples extracted from different ore species in different time have been mixed to analyze the particle size. The results show that the particle size of +38µm in concentrate obviously increases while the particle size of -25µmobviouslydecreaseswith ultrasonic, which means that ultrasonic is good for flotation due to sludge removing effect.
