For the first time, the idea of sustainable development was recognised at a high political level at the UN Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 (UNEP, 1992). Then the governments of the world committed themselves to promote sustainable development in their national activities and international co-operation. In 2001, the European Council approved the EU Strategy for Sustainable Development (European commission, 2011). This complements and supports the EU?s so-called Lisbon Strategy (European council, 2000) on competitiveness. The revised Strategy for Sustainable Development was approved in June 2006. Recently sustainability has had an important role in policy and decision-making while the public awareness towards limits of the environment has been rising. However, the indicators of industrial sustainability satisfy primarily the needs of corporate management and global investors. The information is often broad and non-specific and might occasionally even give a false impression. Moreover, contradictions between environmental, economical and social aspects also point out the unreliability of existing sustainability indexes. Therefore, the current state of affairs serves the interests of neither the industry nor the policy makers. Current corporate sustainability indexes and indicator systems need to be assessed with scientific methods encompassing the identification of their strengths and weaknesses. This requires quantitative and qualitative assessment and synthesis of existing indexes and indicator systems, providing new data on the functionality of existing corporate sustainability indicators. Therefore, the assessment lays the foundation for the development of new, more balanced sustainability index. Our first aim in this multidisciplinary article is to analyse existing global sustainability indexes for process industry. Second, we will introduce a first version of a new sustainability index for process industry, which includes the environmental, social and economic impacts of the plant, as well as legislation aspects.

The paper presents the results of research on the development of gold recovery technology from oxidized gold-copper ore of one of deposits in Russian Federation. Gold and copper grades in the ore are 9.5 g/t and 0.4%, respectively. Various options of flowsheets, such as direct cyanidation, thiourea leaching, flotation and gravity concentration followed by subsequent cyanidation of con-centration products, were tested. It was established that gravity-cyanidation technology with filtra-tion leaching tails and the use of solutions in the recirculation is the optimal option for ore treatment. The proposed flowsheet provides gold recovery for 91.0% at NaCN consumption 2.5 kg/t ac-cording to the results of pilot testing. Ammonia-cyanide gold leaching was also examined. In comparison with cyanidation, gold leaching solution in system NaCN-NH4OH-(NH4)2CO3 allows NaCN consumption to be reduced three times from 4.5 kg to 1.5 kg per 1 ton of the ore and provides the same gold recovery. Based on the laboratory and pilot plant tests results of gravity-cyanidation technology of gold dissolution, process design criteria were developed.

"The standard method of separation using flotation is compromised in terms of kinetics and efficiency, because of the generally slow separating differentials of fine bubbles and fine particle suspensions. A new flotation system has been developed that addresses these issues and imparts other benefits. The new technology is based on established pneumatic flotation designs called Imhoflot which use intensive in-line pre-aeration to aerate the flotation pulp prior to its introduction to the separating cell. Consequently the cell is designed only for the separation of the phases and not for bubble-particle contact. In the new system this separation is speeded up dramatically by the introduction of centrifugal motivation in the separating vessel, without the use of internal moving parts. The design focuses on providing increased differential forces on buoyant mineralised bubbles and hydrophilic fines. The observed result of these differential forces is the improvement of concentrate qualities by the reduction of the amount of misplaced material found in the froth. The commercial benefit to industry is much reduced residence time, less than 30 seconds, which offers considerable cost savings in equipment and infrastructure.Prototypes of 0.65m, 1.7m and 2.2m cell diameter size have been constructed for hydrodynamic and industrial scale tests to assess the previously established computational methods for scale up of the process. The 1.7m cell has been installed and operated for cleaning of potash concentrates in Germany, at throughputs of 150 m3/hr, with extremely encouraging results. A 2.2m cell has been installed and operated in plant trials for superfine coal in South Africa. Results are presented that illustrate the effects of differential separations by comparison with conventional pneumatic and mechanical flotation techniques. Predictions of performance are provided in the contexts of the applications tested."

The alumina production might not continue when the sulfur content of bauxite was too high. In order to bring down the sulfur content in bauxite, we studied on the bauxite desulfurization by bacteria screened from the acid mine drainage at mines of high sulfur content. The screened bacteria were domesticated by the high sulfur content bauxite. The experiments of bauxite desulfurization were carried out under the conditions of 5% pulp density, temperature of 30?, rotate speed of 120rpm. Bacterial desulfurization for 30 days, the sulfur content of the bauxite was reduced from 5.73% to 1.55% and the desulfurization percent was 72.9%. The recovery percent of alumina was 94.3%. The study showed that it was feasible to bring down the sulfur content of bauxite by bioleaching and this technique might make full use of the low grade bauxite.

On installing the Metso Superior MK 54x75? primary gyratory crusher in Nkomati mine the crusher experienced severe power spikes greater than 1000kW which subsequently led to the crusher tripping under load while processing some of Nkomati?s MMZ ores. Likewise significant losses in throughput were also experienced while processing some of Nkomati?s MMZ ore types. Interestingly the crusher was capable of processing the PCMZ ores without experiencing any power spikes or losses in throughput. Investigations into the challenges faced by the crusher while processing Nkomati?s MMZ ores were conducted using the DEM model in conjunction with the fast breakage model present in Metso?s High Fidelity Simulator. The intentions of the study were to establish the most suitable operating conditions or cavity design that would potentially enhance the performance of the crusher. Likewise an understanding of the effects the feed conditions (size distribution and hardness) had on the crusher?s performance was established. Ore characterization tests were conducted on Nkomati?sPyroxenite, Diabase, Calc silicate and quartzite ores which were from Nkomati?s MMZ ore body. The ore characterization tests conducted were drop weight tests, slow compression tests and elastic modulus tests. Four simulations were conducted used the existing cavity design with various open side settings (OSS) and throws. This established the effects of changing the crusher?s operating conditions on its performance. Four additional simulations were conducted on two cavity designs with reduced volumes. This established the effects of changing the crusher?s cavity design on the crusher?s performance. Thus through the simulations a better understandings of the impact of the crusher design, operating conditions and feed conditions on the crushers performance. Furthermore an analysis of the crusher?s performance was made which was used as a basis for comparisons with the base case simulation. Stirred milling of laterites offers possibilities for improving liberation and selective size reduction of soft nickel-bearing minerals in laterites. Batch grinding tests were performed in a Netzsch LME4 stirred mill on a siliceous goethitic (SG) nickel laterite sample (-2000 µm particle size) to evaluate the effect of operating conditions such as stirrer speed, grinding time, pH, solid content, water salinity and charge volume. The target was to produce a -38 µm fraction in the milling product with high nickel recovery and grade. Addition of dispersant (sodium hexametaphosphate) was also optimized with respect to the rheology of the slurry. In terms of stress intensity, the optimum grinding conditions for selective size reduction were: 1000 rpm, 50 per cent charge volume. At higher stress intensity (2000 rpm), Ni recovery in the -38 µm product was higher, but Ni grade was low, due to the breakage of the harder siliceous particles. Decreasing the yield stress by modifying slurry pH or adding dispersant improved the rheological properties of the pulp, but had no great influence on Ni upgrade in the fine product. Modifying water salinity by adding 2 M NaCl had also little effect. The breakage of the +38 µm particles in the feed determined Ni upgrade greatly. Ni grade in the -38 µm product decreased with grinding time, suggesting that the Ni-bearing minerals break first, while the harder siliceous minerals have a lower breakage rate. The breakage rates with respect to sample mass for Ni, Mg and Si indicate that: Mg > Ni > Mass > Si. The optimum grinding time for the highest Ni upgrade was 0.25 min. The Ni grade increased from 0.88 per cent to 1.35 per cent (upgrade 54 per cent), with 24 per cent Ni recovery. Keywords: fine grinding, stirred media mill, nickel laterite, slurry rheology

This investigation is concerned with the optimization of ultrafine grinding of solids. It is focused on a dynamic classifier for recovering the fine fraction, for automatic recycling of the oversize particles and for reducing power consumption. Power consumption plays a major role in these energy intensive processes and depends on several parameters such as nature of the solid, degree of fineness of the finished product and, above all, grain size of the feed. This study indicates the optimal conditions for a dynamic classifier, that is, geometric characteristics of the apparatus and its capacity, inlet air flow rate and dimensions of the classification circuit. It is also shown that a mean grain diameter (dm) of about 2.00 µm with top size (dmax) of 50 µm can be achieved with an imperfection value of below 0.40 and energy consumption of 215 kWht-1. "The aim of this work was the study of the effect of the type (Fe3+, Al3+ and Fe3+ and Al3+ mixture) and of the coprecipitant concentration on As5+ removal by ACF. Removal of As5+ using Sodium Dodecylsulfate (SDS) as a collector was studied by Adsorbing Colloid Flotation (ACF) at laboratory scale. The morphology of the precipitate retained in the foam was analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM/EDS).By comparing the coprecipitant type and concentration studies it could be concluded that As5+ removal in the presence of Fe3+ (160 mg.L-1) alone, or a Fe3+ (80 mg.L-1) and Al3+ (40 mg.L-1) mixture, is equivalently effective (99,9%) and greater than in the presence of Al3+ (80 mg.L-1) alone (97,7%).Through SEM/EDS analyses, it was possible to observe that both morphology and composition of the precipitate produced in the solution and retained in the foam depend on the physico-chemical conditions of the system, that is, on the species present in the solution."

The percentage of leached zinc in massive zinc oxide ores (11.7% Zn, >2 mm) is up to 73.3 % in 120 days. Alternatively, crushed to -0.154 mm, mixed with cement 5% (wt), pelletized and solidified. The diameters of the pellets obtained are between 5 mm to 8 mm. When the pellet solidification periods are 3 days, 10 days and 45 days respectively, the alkaline leaching rates of zinc in the pellets are up to 95.8%, 89.1% and 76.4% respectively. Decreasing the solidification time can re-duce reaction time, increase dissolution of zinc in pellets and lower the effect of initial zinc concentration on leaching rate. The experiment results show that the minimum solidification time is three days, and the kinetic study indicates that alkaline leaching of the low grade zinc oxide pellets is controlled by the diffusion of the leach liquor through the gangue layer in the whole leach process, and the apparent rate constants are 3.33×10-2 day-1, 9.18×10-3 day-1, 5.82×10-3 day-1 respectively.

Today, most requests for quotations force all bidders to follow the bid document to the letter. The choice is then made based on price since it is the only difference in technically identical offers. However, clients allow and even encourage suppliers to come up with alternatives. Overall economy again, is much more than low investment costs. Operation costs may affect the economy of a project far more than a million saved in investment. There is almost always the choice: Should we go for the cheapest solution or should we go for the most economical solution? We strongly recommend the study of the long-term effects on investments as they often surpass any apparent savings in capital expenditure. With high operating costs, time is never on our side. Almost all relevant inputs and outputs in a concentrator have a value that can be expressed in a suitable currency. Unit prices may differ substantially from one operation to the other, but everything has a price tag and globalization has made it possible to move both goods and services to almost any place in the world. Even a rather simple exercise can give a good indication on which process improvements are worth pursuing when investing in new systems or equipment. The ones that do not qualify, as money earners, will naturally appear as clearly. No ?rocket science? is required, just process knowledge, practical experience, an open mind and some common sense and the reward may be the difference of having a good or an excellent project. The model we have developed can be made as detailed as required, but we do not recommend too much detail, as it sometimes tends to distract work and obscure the important issues. Two different process solutions compared in a simplified example illustrate the importance of evaluating a project based on its long-term effects rather than focusing on the investment costs only.

In this paper, the problem of sedimentation and consolidation of poly-disperse suspensions is considered. The solid particles are assumed to be of different densities. If the sediment solids stresses are dropped out of the system equations and using the Richardson and Zaki hindered settling model, it has been found that in the limit, i.e., as time approaches infinity, the fluid is completely displaced to the top of the sediment zone. Furthermore, the species segregate completely with the heavier and coarser particles at the bottom of the sediment and the lighter and finer particles at the top of the sediment. Practical observations do not support these behaviors and physical-ly such behaviors do not exist; consequently, results of this kind in the literature are unrealistic. Here, a mathematical structure of the poly-disperse sedimentation and consolidation problem has been proposed. In this case the compaction zone species solids stresses are introduced in the momentum balance equations of the system. The species solid stresses in the sediment are constrained so that the system equations are consistent, i.e., sedimentation and consolidation of two or more identical species should behave as a mono-disperse system. Such a condition has not been recognized and imposed in some of the studies in the literature, which has led to unreliable results. Two practical forms of species stresses that satisfy the system consistency condition are here proposed. It should be noted that the study of sedimentation and consolidation of poly-disperse suspensions could result in more realistic suspension interfaces compared to mono-disperse suspensions, and could lead to more reliable engineering designs of tailings ponds. Predictions of sedimentation and consolidation in models of poly-disperse suspensions are demonstrated using published data.

The utilization of acid leaching tailings was studied. It is obvious that the Fe in acid leaching tailings can be leached into solutions as Fe2+. In this paper, the influence of conditions, including the concentration of ferrous sulfate, pH, temperature and velocity of air flow was investigated. The optimum conditions for preparing seed crystal are as follows: the concentration of ferrous sulfate is 20 g/L; pH is 9.5~10; reaction temperature is 10~20?; velocity of air flow is 0.4m3/h. The optimum conditions for preparing iron oxide red are as follows: the concentration of ferrous sulfate is 5 g/L; reaction temperature is 80~85?; velocity of air flow is 0.13m3/h. At last, the product of iron oxide red could be prepared by ammonia method.

Preparation strontium carbonate with celestite concentrate by flotation is studied by agglomeration-reduction roasting process. It is shown that, the drop strength of green pellet is greater than 4 times?(0.5m) -1 under the balling conditions of moisture of 9% and time of 18~20min. Lignin xanthate obviously improves the ballability of the celestite concentrate due to the increase of surface hydrophilicity, therefore, the balling rate is increased, as well as green ball strength. The drop strength of 7 times?(0.5m) -1 can be obtained when the lignin xanthate dosage is 0.5%~1%. Reduction roasting with anthracite shows that the SrSO4 conversion is 82%~83% for celestite concentrate pellet, under the optimal conditions of roasting temperature of 1100~1150? and time of 30min, and it is 10% higher than conversion of celestite lump under the same conditions. The strontium carbonate are prepared after roasted pellets are leached, purified and carbonated, and the SrCO3 content is higher than 97% , while the content of CaCO3 is less than 0.3%.

The per capita energy consumption in India is 510kgoe/year, the global average being nearly 1818kgoe/year. Correspondingly low is the per capita CO2 emission at 1.25t against the world average of 4.39t.65-70%, at times more, of India?s power generation from about 190,000 MW installed capacity, is however coal fired.India therefore has to secure diversified sources of energy and solar power is increasingly being looked as the real alternative to the existing over dependence on coal. To ensure sustainable solar power it is essential to secure its raw material base that is ?silica?, hitherto considered as ?minor minerals?. That calls for immediately addressing the issues of land availability, solar power cost, developing a dynamic inventory of silica containing minerals, appropriate processing technology and strong regulatory framework for sustainable mining and processing of all silica rich minerals. "Recovery and grade of the ore produced are two important metrics, which define the profitability of a mineral processing plant. Achieving high grade and high recovery at the same time in a mineral processing plant is difficult due to conflicting nature of the two objectives. To explore the operability limits of the plant operations and find the set of operating conditions that can help achieve the best possible recovery and grade, there is a need to solve a multi-objective optimization (MOO) problem. Past research focused on building a plant-wide simulation model or on optimization of individual units or a part of a mineral processing plant like grinding circuit, crushing circuit, etc. However, it is necessary to consider optimization of the complete plant in order to optimize the plant performance. Here, we have formulated the mineral processing plant performance optimization as a MOO problem. We have applied machine-learning algorithms such as random forest to build models to predict the recovery and grade of the ore. A non-dominated sorting-based multi-objective evolutionary algorithm called NSGA-II (Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II) was employed to solve the MOO problem. Since the number of parameters that influence recovery and grade are quite large, we have applied machine-learning algorithms for feature selection or identification of key process variables. Pareto optimal conditions were determined for manipulated variables like grinding mill throughput, speed ratio at SAG mill, speed of centrifugal pump, water addition at different locations etc. The results obtained are useful in identifying the operability of a mineral processing plant to achieve the optimum grade and recovery for a given feed grade and the processing circuit. INTRODUCTION Copper is majorly mined or extracted as copper sulfides from large open pit mines in porphyry copper deposits. Among all the available ores, sulfides are the most commercial ores, especially chalcopyrite (Greenwood and Alan, 1997). Copper grade in these ores generally lies between 0.4 to 1.0%. In order to perform smelting operation, the grade of copper has to be improved to around 30% (Biswas et al. 2013). This targeted copper grade is achieved through two stages of mineral processing. Firstly, the copper in the ore has to be liberated by crushing the mineral rock. Secondly, the liberated copper in the crushed ore is then physically separated from other minerals like nickel by froth flotation techniques."

The physico-chemical characteristics of raw materials used for the production of iron ore pellets have a strong influence on the productivity of pelletization operations and on the quality of pellets. Since iron ores from different sources are used for making iron ore pellets and since the quality of the ores varies with time, there is a need to optimize and control pellet plant operations on a regular basis to achieve optimum productivity while maintaining pellet quality within the desirable specifications. In order to achieve this objective, a model-based on-line optimization system was implemented on two industrial scale induration furnaces. The optimization system consists of a rigorous mathematical model of the induration process, a model for the permeability of the bed of pellets, a statistical model for the quality of iron ore pellets and an optimization module based on sequential quadratic programming. The rigorous model is tested on-line using the wind-box temperature available real-time. The process was optimized to enhance induration furnace productivity for the given constraints on pellet quality parameters such as the cold compressive strength (CCS) and Tumble Index (TI), and other equipment design parameters. Process variables such as induration machine speed, cold air flow rate and hood temperature profile were used as the optimization variables. The on-line optimization system was successfully implemented in two industrial induration furnaces and lead to enhanced productivity. Details of the on-line optimization system and results of process optimization will be presented.

Research at Cytec over the past two decades has shown that the traditional approach for ore metallurgical characterization (typically conducted via laboratory-scale batch flotation tests), which involves changing reagents and conditions one-factor-at-a-time, leads to several pitfalls. The chemical solution thus selected has a narrow un-optimized window of performance and will likely fail in the plant. A holistic approach, called the Flotation Matrix 100? process for ore metallurgical characterization, was developed at Cytec about a decade ago and has been successfully used to develop robust reagent solutions for several operations around the world. The premise for the approach is that flotation outcome from ores is variable and is determined by complex interactions between various physical, chemical and operational factors. A key component of the process is the use of efficient multivariate designs focused on the chemistry aspects (reagents and pulp chemistry), which helps identify the best processing conditions for each ore type, as well as the conditions resulting in poor performance. It also includes advanced statistical methods for dealing with the complexity and variability of experimental data. The holistic approach is illustrated in this paper with a case study on Pb/Zn ores. Using just 18 carefully designed batch tests, it is possible to partially simulate the behavior of each ore type in the plant. The best conditions for each ore type, along with the conditions to avoid, are identified. Along with this, insights are obtained into the reasons for high reagent dosages for certain ore types, and interactions between variables. Calcined calcium oxide from limestone is hydrated to manufacture calcium hydroxide, and then precipitated calcium carbonate is synthesized from calcium hydroxide. Precipitated calcium carbonate of various morphologies is obtained by controlled conditions of each step and characteristics of limestone, calcium oxide and calcium hydroxide. Especially characteristics of calcium hydroxide have the most influence on morphology of precipitated calcium carbonate character. In this study, therefore, it is investigated the specific surface area of calcium hydroxide and morphology of precipitated calcium carbonate according to hydration temperature. Calcium hydroxide hydrated at high initial temperature has larger particle size than that hydrated at low initial temperature. And formation yield of aragonite precipitated calcium carbonate has improved by using calcium hydroxide had larger particle size (hydrated at high initial temperature).

In this study the extraction of zirconium and hafnium has been investigated by solvent extraction using Cyanex 302 in various media such as nitric, sulfuric and hydrochloric acid has been investigated. Effect of various parameters such as type and acid concentration, extractant concentration, type of diluent, equilibrium time, various foreign ions and finally type and concentration of strip-ping agent have been studied. The results showed that nitric acid was optimum media for extraction of zirconium and hafnium. The extraction of zirconium and hafnium occurred quantitatively in the concentration of higher than 4 M nitric acid but in hydrochloric acid media, quantitative extraction obtains over 8 M HCl. In sulfuric acid media, extraction of zirconium and hafnium is negligible. Stripping studies showed that the optimum reagent for stripping was 0.5M sulfuric acid.

Waste water produced from coal preparation plants posses several problems during dewatering and solid/liquid separation. The natural sedimentation rate of the particles present in colloidal and finely divided suspended form is very slow. Flocculation technology is being applied in most of the coal washeries to recover water which is being accomplished through the use of inorganic salts, polymeric flocculants or both depending on the chemical and physical characteristics of the pollutants present in the waste water. The waste tailing water from Piperware coal preparation plant, Central Coalfield Limited (CCL), India, is highly turbid containing ~ 16000 NTU with negative surface charge in the pH range of 2 to 10. Polymeric flocculants in conjunction with fine magnetite is investigated to achieve faster settling rate with lowest level of water turbidity. The conditions affecting the interaction between the reagents and the turbid particles present in the tailings water are investigated. It is possible to bring down the turbidity of the water to < 90 NTU from very high turbid tailing water by using 2 mg/L of the polymeric flocculent in combination with 0.1 g/L of magnetite at natural pH of the tailing slurry. It has been found that finely divided positively charged magnetite particles in combination with the flocculent selectively coat the negatively charged impurities present in water and thereby increase the settling rate under the influence of a magnetic field.
