Studies of benthic recolonization in the aftermath of marine aggregate dredging in the U.K. and elsewhere are limited and are largely confined to experimental circumstances. Investigations of the physical and biological status of licensed extraction sites in the U.K. at various times following cessation of commercial dredging are very limited, and so judgments as to the likely progress towards environmental restoration and the time-scales involved continue to be based on predictions rather than real data. This field-based research programme was commissioned to enhance the understanding of processes leading to physical and biological recovery of the seabed following dredging, thereby aiding the identification of practices to minimize environmental harm at licensed sites, and to promote rehabilitation on cessation. The outcome of survey work will have the notable benefit of allowing questions about the present status of locations hitherto subject to commercial exploitation to be answered directly, rather than by inference.

Both ferromanganese crusts and nodules present potential processors with enormous volumes of tailings of dubious environmental character: most processing scenarios fail to utilize the uneconomic manganese itself, leaving a total waste volume on the order of 96% of the incoming ore. Each current disposal proposal seems flawed: (1) backhauling to the initial mine site is costly and might run afoul of EPA or UN marine dumping*regulations, (2) subsea disposal near a coastal processing site means almost inevitable community opposition, (3) agricultural soil amendment for improving barren lava or coral rubble appears to require prohibitive amounts of supplementary phosphate, and (4) the slag resulting from an energy intensive pyrometallurgical processing may have potential as road ballast, but few processors will opt for smelting in all but those locales where energy is very cheap. This unfortunately rules out a smelting operation in almost any Pacific Island environment. We envision at least one other scenario which could result in both the removal of tailings from a processing plant and an increase in the supply of useful building materials at little or no cost to either the processing or construction industries--transforming a tenacious waste into a novel resource. Ongoing experiments have demonstrated considerable potential for turning acid leach tailings into dark composite facing stone, fancy black tile, novelty ceramics or concrete aggregate. The tailings are commonly very fine grained and may also serve as an additive in drilling mud. Applications as an additive to asphalt also need to be explored. The metal scavenging nature of ferromanganese minerals should be considered as a radioactive waste disposal matrix. There is no doubt that the greatest challenge will be

"Germany, like several other countries, has entered a contract with the International Seabed Authority (ISA) to explore the prospects of commercial manganese nodule mining in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ). Ensuring a maximally sustainable deep-sea mining operation requires a thorough understanding of the environmental impacts associated with every step of the mining process from the extraction of the nodules at the seafloor to the refinery on land. Against this background, the project presented here applies a combination of scenario-building and life cycle assessment (LCA) to assess and evaluate the sustainability performance of the individual process steps as well as the entire mining operation.Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a comprehensive methodological framework that allows the identification and quantification of impacts occurring during a products life-cycle, as well as the analysis and evaluation of their contribution to pre-defined impact categories, such as climate change, acidification and toxicity (Rebitzer et al., 2004). Until now, LCAs with a focus on raw material extraction have almost exclusively been applied to terrestrial processes. Noteworthy exceptions are offshore drilling, offshore wind farms and ocean fishing. Hence, the first part of the project is to investigate in how far LCA can be applied to deep-sea settings and if and in what way it could be adapted to be used in a deep-sea mining context."

Recognizing that the planned commercial exploitation of polymetallic nodules in the deep sea should be accompanied by environmental studies in order to protect this largest and least understood ecosystem of our planet, the German Ministry for Research and Technology has since 1989 funded a longterm and large-scale disturbance-recolonization (DISCOL) experiment in the abyssal Peru Basin of the equatorial South Pacific Ocean. The circular study site is located at 4150m depths and encompasses about 10km2 of relatively flat, heavily sedimented sea floor with low (< 15%) nodule coverage near an existing German nodule mining exploration license area. The RV SONNE, a large and well-equipped multi-purpose research vessel, served as platform for all environmental cruises conducted to date. The initial DISCOL expedition (SO-61, Feb.-March 1989) was carried out in two legs. During DISCOL 1/1, a study site was selected, a pre-disturbance baseline assessment was undertaken, and sea floor disruption was begun using the "plow-harrow", a uniquely designed disturber device towed repeatedly across the circular study area. During DISCOL 1/2, disturber deployments continued until the device had created 78 criss-crossing and partially overlapping tracks along which nodules were essentially plowed under while sediment from up to 15cm below the seabed had been turned over and exposed at the surface. In addition to the obvious within disturber track impacts, sediment mobilized by plowing drifted off with the prevailing near-bottom current and redeposited downstream, blanketing nearby areas not directly disturbed. Immediately after the disturbance phase, an initial post-impact sampling series was performed. The DISCOL Experimental Area (DEA) was revisited about six months (DISCOL 2, SO-64, Sept. 1989), three years (DISCOL 3, SO-77, Feb. 1992), and seven years (ATESEPP SO-106, Jan.-March 1996) after disturbance to collect further post-impact samples, monitor changes in the benthic community and follow the recolonization process. In addition to benthic community studies, plankton investigations were initiated during the third DISCOL cruise (SO-77) and continued during three further cruises (SO-78, SO-79 and SO-80/2) in 1992.

Hydrothermal fluids emanating from the seafloor rise as buoyant plumes, entraining ambient bottom sea water on the way up, until they reach density equilibrium and spread laterally in a direction that is governed by near-bottom currents. Plumes provide targets for focussing exploration for seafloor polymetallic sulfide deposits associated with active hydrothermal vents because their lateral and vertical extent is commonly orders of magnitude larger than the vent field from which they originate. Black smokers can inject on the order of 10,000 µg of particles per liter into a sea water column that normally contains only about 10 µg of particles per liter. The resulting plume should be characterized by increased particulate concentration with respect to background sea water and, therefore, provide a measurable gradient towards the source of venting. By utilizing the ability of particles to scatter light, we employed a real¬time, acoustically telemetered, nephelometer to measure this gradient, and mapped the size, shape and particle concentration of plumes at an active spreading center on the Southern Explorer Ridge at lat 49°45.6&apos;N and long 130°16.2&apos;W. Isopach and particle concentration data indicate the presence of two separate but overlapping plumes. The first is associated with a known vent field called Magic Mountain; the second with a new field called AGOR 171, 1.2

The Neptune Group was established in 1999 to apply for exploration permits within New Zealand’s 200nm EEZ. These applications were to investigate and commercialise hydrothermal Seafloor Massive Sulphide (SMS) deposits identified by international researchers and to locate others. SMS are volcanically related seafloor accumulations of copper, lead and zinc with high levels of gold and silver. Neptune has three granted exploration licenses within the New Zealand EEZ and has application in other jurisdictions. Neptune undertook the world’s first commercial drilling exploration work of SMS in December of 2005.

A seafloor based robotic drilling system is being developed for the National Institute of Ocean Technology in Chennai, India to support a National initiative for marine methane hydrate research. The system will be capable of core sampling to 150m below the seafloor in 3000m of water under telemetric control of an operator onboard a research vessel at the surface. Unlike previous robotic drilling systems, this unit (designated the ACS) will use wireline methodology to reduce the number of tool handling operations required to complete the borehole (conventional rod drilling requires 2025 tool handling operations to complete a 100m hole, while wireline requires only 48 operations to reach the same depth).

Gold and silver are important byproducts of mining volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits. Both metals occur in VMS deposits ranging in age from the Archean to the currently forming massive sulfides found on the ocean floor. The gold- and silver-rich deposits on the modern seafloor are geographically diverse and occur in several different tectonic settings (Figure 1a,b) including seamounts (e.g. Franklin Seamount, Papua New Guinea), unsedimented mid ocean ridges (e.g. TAG and Snakepit, Mid Atlantic Ridge), sedimented mid ocean ridges (e.g. Escanaba Trough) and back-arc basins (e.g. Manus Basin, Papua New Guinea). Interestingly, the most gold- and silver-rich deposits are found in the back-arc basins of the western Pacific, commonly associated with differentiated volcanic rocks such as the dacite-rhyodacite suite at PACMANUS in the eastern Manus Basin. This suggests that different, or more efficient, mechanisms are concentrating precious metals in such back-arc settings. Such mechanisms may include leaching of volcanics enriched in gold (e.g. rifted arc crust) or silver (e.g. continental crust) and/or the introduction of gold into a hydrothermal system by a magmatic fluid. The gold content of modern seafloor precipitates varies from a few ppb up to a high of 54 ppm reported from eastern Manus Basin (1). The Jade Deposit in the Okinawa Trough has the highest silver contents with values up to 1.1% (2). Both gold and silver are preferentially concentrated in late-stage, low temperature precipitates with zinc-rich assemblages being favoured in most cases. Gold is found as relatively pure native gold and sub-microscopic inclusions in gold-rich deposits, but occurs predominantly as sub-microscopic inclusions and possibly as solid solution in the gold-poor deposits (3). Silver occurs as rare silver minerals such as acanthite and native silver in the silver rich Jade deposit (2), but more commonly in the silver-containing minerals tetrahedrite and tennantite, as is the case in the PACMANUS deposit. Tetrahedrite is also known to be an important host of silver in ancient VMS deposits (4). More abundant sulfides can contribute significantly to the silver balance. In the silver-poor deposits at 21 N East Pacific Rise, silver is contained entirely within chalcopyrite, isocubanite, pyrite, marcasite, sphalerite/wurtzite and galena. In this case silver may be present as sub-microscopic inclusions of silver minerals or in solid solution.

INTRODUCTION Germany has a long history in marine research in the Indian Ocean. The first German scientific cruise started in 1964, followed by a series of state-sponsored research cruises between 1983 and 1995 leading to the first finding of polymetallic sulfides in the Indian Ocean. The research included regional bathymetric, geological, structural, volcanological, petrological and hydrothermal investigations along the Carlsberg Ridge and the Central Indian Ridge (CIR). Early environmental base line studies covered oceanographic and sedimentology aspects. In 2010, BGR took the initiative for the preparation of a license application for the exploration of polymetallic sulfides with the International Seabed Authority (ISA), and prospecting started in 2011 along the southern Central (CIR) and the northern Southeast Indian Ridge (SEIR) in the southwestern Indian Ocean (cruises INDEX 2011 on board R/V Sonne), INDEX 2012 (R/V Fugro Gauss), INDEX 2013/1-2 (R/V Sonne) and INDEX 2014 (R/V Pelagia). After three years of resource-oriented and environmental base line studies, BGR, in order for the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), applied for an exploration license which was approved by and subsequently signed with the ISA in 2015. The license gave permission to start a detailed exclusive resource-oriented exploration program in the license area. The program includes the outline of potential ore deposits and a resource assessment but also extensive and detailed base line studies for the sustainable protection of the marine environment in the license area. The license contract has a fifteen years lifetime and may allow the application for a subsequent mining license. The exploration aims at the identification of inactive polymetallic sulfide deposits, formed below former discharge zones of hot hydrothermal fluids on the ocean floor (“black smoker” systems), by advanced and modern exploration techniques.

"Bimodal lithostratigrafic assemblages are of significance in volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS)-hosted lithology. The largest deposits are either bimodal-siliciclastic or maficsiliciclastic, and the presence of a significant siliciclastic component in the host stratigraphic succession favors large VMS deposits (e.g., Franklin et al., 2005; Barrie and Hannington, 1999). In the case of modern sub-seafloor VMS deposits in arc-related settings, the majority of deposits have been discovered in association with calderas or cauldrons (Halbach et al., 1993; Ishibashi and Urabe, 1995; Iizasa et al., 1999). These features are formed by the explosive eruption of silicic volcanoes, so that silicic host rocks and/or pumiceous volcanic clasts are generally observed around the ore deposits (e.g., Binns and Scott, 1993; Fiske et al., 2001). Caldera-like and graben-like morphological features therefore attract attention in geophysical surveys. However, silicic lithologies (dacite and rhyolite) normally contain only small amount of metallic elements (e.g., a few ppm to a few dozen ppm of Cu), whereas mafic rocks, such as basalts and basaltic andesites, contain significant amounts of metals (e.g., a few hundred ppm of Cu). Thus, the origin of metallic elements in VMS deposits associate with the silicic host rock remains unclear.The Iheya North Knoll is a volcanic complex in the middle of the Okinawa Trough. It is located in a young and actively spreading back-arc basin that extends for 1200 km behind the Ryukyu arc-trench system (Lee et al., 1980; Letouzey and Kimura, 1986). Several active hydrothermal fields have been recognized in the Iheya North Knoll. Mineralization at the Iheya North Knoll is characterized by relatively juvenile features consisting of VMS deposits with associated hydrothermal alterations to various degrees. Massive sphaleriterich sulfides at this site, recovered for the first time from beneath an active seafloor hydrothermal system, strongly resemble the black ore of the Kuroko deposits of the Miocene age in Japan (Takai et al., 2011). From February 11 to March 17, 2016, the SIP CK16-01 (Exp. 908) D/V Chikyu cruise was conducted at Iheya North Knoll and the rifting center of the Iheya Minor Ridge area, middle Okinawa Trough. The Iheya Minor Ridge area is also an active hydrothermal field, located ~30 km southeast of the Iheya North Knoll. In this area, basaltic rocks are widely distributed, and drilling has confirmed that the basaltic materials continue to ~120 m below the seafloor (Kumagai et al., in prep)."

In late 1988, the Committee for Coordination of Joint Prospecting for Mineral Resources in South Pacific Offshore Areas (CCOP/SOPAC), Suva, Fiji, consulted the Continental Shelf Division of the Marine Minerals Technology Center regarding low-tech, low-cost, reconnaissance sampling systems for a variety of nearshore needs. Materials of interest to several member island nations included silica and calcareous aggregate for cement manufacture, sand for beach replenishment, heavy minerals, and precious metals. A principal criteria of the system was that it be of low-tech design, and as far as possible, suitable for construction on the islands from available materials. It should also be operable with SOPAC personnel on island vessels of opportunity. The system selected to satisfy these requirements was a convertible drill of basic airlift design, capable of operating with easy modification as either a vibralift or airlift, depending on the desired application. The basic system included a drill pipe constructed of heavy duty 76 mm (3") black iron pipe, divided into three 3 meter sections (for ease of transport), fitted with an air intake manifold and bit at the lower end. A 25 mm (1") galvanized pipe assembled in three similar sections and clamped to the drill pipe served as a water jet to assist in cutting. Air was supplied to the manifold by means of a 12 mm (1/2") pipe also clamped along the length of the drill pipe. The cost of an offshore exploration project is mainly dependent on the size of the vessel engaged for the work and increases dramatically with increasing size. Of the various factors influencing vessel size, the type and size of the sampling equipment is typically the principal consideration. This scenario is particularly true of shallow sampling programs employing a vibracore system. The problem develops when certain bottom materials such as densely packed fine sand require sampling. This type of material being one of the most difficult for the standard vibracore systems, with integral core liner, to penetrate to a reasonable depth of some five to seven meters. The problem is mainly related to the excessive cross sectional area of the cutting bit required to accommodate the core liner. The typical solution has been to apply more power to the vibracore drive head which results in a considerable scale-up for the entire system with attendant increase in vessel size. In order to reduce operating cost, M.M.R.I. has developed several systems for deployment from vessels in the 20 meter range. Two systems are modifications to the basic vibracore and a third is a vibralift system. Basically, one of the vibracore units is employed where core liners are required, utilizing a special jet bit designed to reduce the cutting pressure on the bit while not affecting the integrity of the core. Diamond mega-placers, in order to rank amongst the primary diamond deposits, are defined as => 70 m carats at =>95% gem quality. There is only one mega-placer known and that is found along the coast of southwestern Africa fringing the Kaapvaal craton. Placers are classified as residual when they are left on the craton, transient when being eroded into the exit drainage and terminal. Terminal placers, in being the final depositories of diamonds off the craton, have the greatest probability of being a mega-placer and such is the case in the placer deposits near the Orange River mouth, southwestern Africa. There are four main groups of conditions leading to the development of a mega-placer: the craton, the drainage, the nature of the environment at the terminus and the timing. The craton, in its role as the producer of diamonds is significant in respect to its size, diamond-fertility, the degree to which diamonds from successive kimberlite intrusions have been retained there and their availability to the final drainage yielding the mega-placer. Cratons in being buoyant have a tendency to leak diamonds into surrounding basins but in being incompressible often have orogens converge onto them resulting in lost sediment being returned as foreland basin fills. In order to concentrate a bulk of diamonds the drainage basin has to be large with a high proportion of it on the craton. The drainage yielding the mega-placer should ideally not have been preceded by older drainage and other systems that may have robbed the craton of earlier diamonds. The exits of diamonds from the craton need to be few in order to focus on their supply and the drainage network needs to be efficient in order to remove the maximum volume of diamonds off the craton. This efficiency and the focused termination is best achieved by the rejuvenation of a pre-existing drainage network. The drainage should be young enough to yield host sediments friable enough to allow brittle diamonds to be recovered from them.

The Logatchev hydrothermal field is situated on the east inner flank of the rift valley of the MAR at 14°45?N and is hosted by serpentinized peridotites and minor gabbronorites while basalts are subordinate. Hydrothermal precipitates recovered from the Logatchev field during a recent R/V Meteor cruise include massive chalcopyrite chimneys, massive pyrite crusts, silicified breccias, abundant secondary Cu-sulfides, red jaspers, abundant Fe-Mn-oxyhydroxides as well as atacamite and Mn-oxides (Kuhn et al., 2004). Previous results of hydrothermal fluid studies in the Logatchev field are somewhat at odds with theoretical models of ultramafic-seawater reaction. Butterfield et al. (2003) suggested that the Fe component of orthopyroxene plays the more important role compared to olivine in ultramafic-hosted hydrothermal systems. This consideration is supported by the recovery of large amounts of Opx-rich gabbronorites and orthopyroxenites in the Logatchev field (Kuhn et al., 2004). A possible tool to constrain the contribution of the different rock types (ultramafics, mafics, MORB) to a seafloor hydrothermal system is the systematic analysis of 187/188Os ratios of the host rocks as educts and the sulfides as products. For instance, abyssal peridotites mainly display low 187/188Os ratios (<0.127); in contrast MORB and gabbronorites have radiogenic ratios of >0.13 (Snow and Reisberg, 1995), orthopyroxenite has ratios of about 0.174 (Büchl et al., 2002) and seawater has an ever higher 187/188Os of about 1 (Sharma et al., 1997). Therefore, massive sulfides predominantly leached from ultramafic rocks should have Os isotopic ratios plotting on a mixing line between the ultramafic rocks and seawater (in a 187/188Os vs. 1/Os diagram), whereas those derived from MORB, gabbronorites and/or orthopyroxenites will be plotting on different mixing lines.

Are hydrothermal emissions from subduction-related volcanic arcs important to the total hydrothermal burden of the oceans? While historical observations of hydrothermal venting of fluids at mid-ocean ridgecrests, intra-plate hotspots, and backarc spreading centers are numerous, we remain poorly informed regarding the contributions from hydrothermal systems associated with oceanic submarine arcs. Here we report the chemical results from the first systematic assessment for hydrothermal activity at an intra-oceanic arc front. We discovered that 7 of the 13 submarine volcanoes that define a 260-km-long segment of the southern Kermadec arc north of New Zealand are hydrothermally active. Most significant here is that the chemical compositions of the various hydrothermal systems, inferred from back-extrapolation of observations of hydrothermal plumes, are diverse, and in many instances enriched in the concentrations of gases (e.g., CO2 and H2S) and metals (e.g., Fe and Mn) compared to effluents commonly discharged from mid-ocean ridges. If our results are generally representative of submarine arcs, whose global extent may equal one-third that of ridgecrests, the answer to our leading question could be a resounding yes in terms of both volume and chemical composition.

With the world’s growing demand for metals, seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) deposits are now seen as a possible mineral resource that could contributes to secure metal supply for human needs. SMS deposits are characterized by high concentrations of base metals and at some place high contents of precious and rare metals. Since 1977 and the discovery of the first high temperature (HT) hydrothermal vent and its sulfide mineralization and high biodiversity, more than 300 sites are known today. If the exploration strategy for detection of active hydrothermal sites is now robust, their associated mineralization will not (and must not) constitute a potential target for deep-sea mining due to environmental concerns and technical limitations. Recent studies on SMS deposits are rather focused on extinct and buried mineralized sites characterized by a lower biomass. Several geophysical techniques to explore and detect extinct SMS (eSMS) and buried SMS (bSMS) have been developed (e.g. Kawada and Kasaya, 2017; Szitkar et al., 2017, 2014) using different approaches (e.g. regional or local scale; ship-based or using underwater vehicles) with several degrees of success or limitation. Here we present results from acoustic surveys performed on the TAG hydrothermal district during the BICOSE (2014) and LEVE-SMF (2016) cruises and direct observation provided by HOV (Nautile) dives carried out during HERMINE cruise (2017). Acoustic data were acquired using two different multibeam echosounders (MBES): the hull-mounted Kongsberg EM122 (12 kHz, R/V L’Atalante) and the ROV-mounted RESON SeaBat 7125 (400 kHz, ROV Victor) (Figure 1). After processing, acoustic seafloor backscatter data from both MBES provides complementary qualitative results in relation to the seafloor composition. The analysis of the seafloor backscatter data obtained by near-seafloor surveys with the high-resolution 400 kHz MBES shows a clear relationship between low backscatter strength values and areas covered with pelagic and hydrothermal sediments whereas high backscatter strength values are associated to pillow lavas and basaltic scree. Intermediate backscatter strength values are rather related to old and younger eSMS as well as to mineralization on TAG active mound.

The Marine Minerals Technology Center (MMTC) was established by Congress in FY 1988 as part of the Mineral Institutes Program, administered by the U.S. Bureau of Mines under the auspices of the Department of the Interior. The primary objective of the MMTC is to encourage the development of selected mineral materials from U.S. seabeds by providing opportunities for appropriate engineering systems research, development, and technology transfer within academic, government, and industrial communities. The center will also provide the leadership and facilities required for the education and training of the nation&apos;s scientists and engineers in the field of ocean mineral development. Because of the broad spectrum of study encompassed by the field of ocean mining and mineral resources, the MMTC is organized to include separate divisions for nearshore and deep ocean research. The Continental Shelf Division is administered by The Mississippi Mineral Resources Institute (MMRI) of the School of Engineering at The university of Mississippi. Despite the lack of formal structure, the Society has cosponsored symposia both in Europe and in North America including the 16th Annual Underwater Mining Institute in Halifax, Nova Scotia, last year. The roster of members is now sufficient to emerge as a fledgling professional society. To this end an ad hoc committee was appointed to prepare by-laws stating the objectives of the Society, provide the procedures for the election of officers and other guidelines essential for the operation of the organization. This paper briefly summarizes the history of the group, the by-laws, together with membership requirements.

Hydrothermal circulation that produces sulfide deposits in the marine environment can also produce sulfide deposits in lakes. The major differences in terms of process are (1) in lakes the hydrothermal fluid is meteoric water of low salinity whereas in the marine setting it is saline and (2) the rocks that are leached of metals to produce the deposits are continental crust in one case and oceanic crust in the other. We have examined sulfides that are presently forming in two lakes ? Lake Tanganyika in east Africa and Lake Oyunuma in Hokkaido, Japan. Tanganyika is the second largest lake in the world and the second deepest rift lake, after Lake Baikal in southeastern Siberia. Two hydrothermal fields are known in its northern basin at Pemba and Cape Banza (Tiercelin et al., 1993). At Pemba, CO2 and CH4-rich, low temperature (53-88°C) hydrothermal fluids are forming decimeter-tall chimneys at 2-46 m water depth. Our microscopic and x-ray diffraction study of samples from the Pemba site reveal marcasite and pyrite to be the most common sulfides. Minor minerals include barite, hematite, bornite and chalcopyrite. Quartz and feldspar are also identified and were probably incorporated from the surrounding lake sediments. At Cape Banza, aragonite chimneys, up to 70 cm high, are venting fluids at 66-103°C.
