"The ore microscope and electron microprobe, two common instruments for academic research, have not been used to full advantage in the Canadian mining industry, perhaps because they are not readily available to most mining companies.The present paper gives a description of the two instruments and of the manner in which, when used together, they contribute to the identification and description of mineralogical and metallurgical samples, and reviews the applications, to . date, in the mineral industry.The metallurgical applications can assist in determining the best separation technique for a particular metal or other economically important element, can provide explanations for poor recovery and/or liberation, can be used to determine theoptimum concentrate grade and can indicate environmental problems that may arise from the extraction process.In certain cases, the use of the two instruments may assist in the evaluation of new mineral deposits and in the determination of the origin of mineralization.IntroductionThe ore microscope and electron microprobe, two widely used instruments in universities and other research institutions, have not been exploited to their full potential by the Canadian mining industry.High-magnification, high-resolution ore microscopes, owned by most Canadian universities and government mining branches, are not widely used by mining organizations. The situation is very much the same with the microprobe. The geology departments of several major Canadian universities have easy access to this instrument. Fifteen of them, to the author's knowledge, own one and a few have already acquired or are planning on acquiring a second and later model. The mining branches of the Canadian Government have similar easy access to microprobes, as at least four of these instruments are available to them in Ottawa alone. The mining companies, on the other hand, except for the few larger ones which have their own research laboratories, have not been able to take advantage of electron microprobes in the past.This failure to exploit good ore microscopes and electron microprobes has been mainly due to a lack of expertise in the use of the two instruments for the study of metallurgical problems related to ore mineralogy. Government institutions providing research and test work to the industry are few in number, and are not always equipped with these instruments or are not geologically-oriented. Information provided on a consulting basis by universities and by government mining branches is normally limited, and frequently is not oriented to the needs of the mining company."

Many successful actions are required to bring a profitable extractive metallurgical operation into production. Competent process development performed within the project development schedule increases the chances of obtaining project financing and decreases the risk of engineering design errors being built into the commercial plant. The general sequence of steps in process development is well known: technology review, desktop studies, scoping studies, prefeasibility, and so on, with an increasing requirement for experimental evidence as the studies advance. This paper suggests principles for guiding process development work so that the efforts stay on track toward a smooth startup and a profitable commercial operation. It emphasizes closely aligning the research with the corporate goals of the mining company management, understanding the mineralogy and variability in the deposit, and guiding by flowsheet and material balance. Examples of hydrometallurgical process development leading to the early use of solvent extraction in the mining industry are given.

"Western Canadian coking coals are located in the Rocky Mountains arid foothills of British Columbia and Alberta. They are typical of non-marine coals, characterized by total sulphur contents of less than one per cent and with ash contents of 10-30 weight per cent. This mineral matter is composed principally of kaolinite and quartz.The petrographic compositions of most of the coking coals which constitute the 2.065 billion tonnes of British Columbia's measured reserves, and the compositions of the metallurgical coal currently exported from Alberta, show them to be rich in the inertinite macerals, macrinite, fusinite and semifusinite. When the mean maximum reflectance of vitrinite in oil/Romax) is used as the coal rank parameter, this high inertinite content is reflected in the lower volatile-matter yields, but the relatively inert character is also displayed by lower free swelling indices (PSI), lower maximum dilatations, lower maximum fluidities and lower coke strengths than other coals of the same rank, but richer in the reactive macerals, vitrinite, exinite and semifusinite. Despite these reduced values in the so-called caking tests, inertinite-rich coals produce strong coke.A system of classification of coking coals is introduced which is based on rank, as indicated by Ro max, and either petrographic composition, maximum dilatation, maximum fluidity or, to a lesser extent, PSI and volatile-matter yield. Six principal coal groups can be distinguished among coking coals using this versatile classification. Inertinite-rich coals are assigned to the Keystone Group (GI), Balmer Group (G3) or Moura Group (G4), each group being named for a coal typical of that population ofcoals. Reactive-rich coals are assigned to the Pittston Group (G2), Kellerman Group (G5) or Big Ben Group (G6). A multiple-regression analysis of coal quality versus price shows how the value of coking coal in the Japanese market appears to be related to reflectance and the free swelling index, and confirms the economic viability of the classification.British Columbia's measured reserves of coking coal contain representatives of four of these groups; Balmer Group (73%), Moura Group (/6%), Pittston Group (3.4%) and Kellerman Group (7.6%).This analysis of the quality of Western Canadian coking coal indicates that despite the need for large proportions of inertinite-rich coking coal in blends produced in the Japanese steel industry, there is nevertheless a demonstrated overabundance of Balmer Group and Moura Group coals available to the international coking coal market."

Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A leaches secondary copper sulfides. In recent years, the mine has introduced innovations that have improved the management of mineral crushing, agglomeration, curing, and leaching. The crushing plant, for example, uses the concepts of degree of balance and percentage of time in an operationally balanced state which, displayed in real time, facilitate more intensive and uniform utilization of the crushers. High agglomerate quality is ensured with the correct dose of moisture, which is adjusted to the changing characteristics of the mineral through the use of electrical conductivity measurements. The amount of acid used for curing the agglomerate is also adjusted by using quality control information. Finally, the stockpile irrigation regime is managed using the criteria established by the "Lixiviant Request Rate", which optimizes the addition of leaching solution, creating such benefits as faster recovery, and reduced acid and energy consumption.

History In approaching the subject of diamond-drilling practice, a brief history of the origin and development of the diamond drill may be of interest. The use of black diamonds for boring holes in rock was discovered in 1863 by Rudolph Leschot, a French engineer. In 1864, he employed a diamond bit to bore holes for blasting purposes in the construction of the Mont Cenis tunnel between France and Italy. The method was introduced and developed in the United States in the late sixties. The first deep hole was drilled for coal in 1870, near Pottsville, Penn., by M. C. Bullock. This hole was seven hundred and fifty feet deep. It can be inferred that the diamond drill was introduced into Canada in 1871, when a bore-hole, known as Harper's bore-hole, was drilled for coal at Springhill, Cumberland county, Nova Scotia; and at the old Silver Islet mine, near Port Arthur, the diamond drill was in use as early as 1872. Diamond Drills While M. C. Bullock was developing the diamond drill for exploratory work, the Sullivan Machine Company, of Claremont, N.H., was developing the diamond channelers and gadders for quarry work. These quarry machines were very successful until the high price of black diamonds became prohibitive. In 1878, Albert Ball, chief engineer of the Sullivan Machine Company, designed the Sullivan diamond drill so well known today. The first of these drills went to the Lake Superior iron ranges. After 1880, use of the diamond drill expanded rapidly and spread to all parts of the world where exploratory work was being done. In recent years, the type of diamond drill has not changed much, but better material is going into its construction. Steel castings have replaced cast-iron. Ball and roller bearings are now used instead of brasses and babbits. Gun lubrication has eliminated the oil-can. These improvements make a drill that can be operated for long periods without expense for repairs.

"A stream sediment geochemical survey covering an area of 13.000 sq. km near Churchill Falls. Labrador. was conducted for Brinex (British Newfoundland Explorations Ltd.) prior to partial flooding by the Churchill Falls power project. Stream sediments (minus 80-mesh) were analyzed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Ag, Mo. U and Mn, and the heavy mineral, nonmagnetic fraction (minus 60-mesh) for Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Ag, Mo, Ba and Mn. A binocular examination of the concentrates for sulphides and pyrope garnet was done on the heavy mineral concentrates. The concentrates were also examined for fluorescent minerals.Two distinct areas with high trace-element values indicate the need for follow-up studies. The first is in an area of gabbro erratics containing massive and disseminated sulphides (pyrrhotite, pyrite and minor chalcopyrite) on the western edge of the survey area along the Esker Road. The second, largest area (several hundred square kilometres) is anomalous in U and Mo and associated with felsic intrusives (Red Wine Complex?), syenites. granite gneiss and sedimentary rocks (Seal Lake Group?).The binocular study showed that almost 15% of the heavy mineral concentrates contained pyrite and no other sulphides. This indicates that this technique may be worthwhile in determining the presence of sulphide minerals in stream sediments from glaciated environments. The only fluorescent mineral observed in the study was zircon."

"This paper presents a short history of the development of milling at Buchans, Newfoundland, and a description of the operation.History and DevelopmentTHE original ore discovery was made at Buchans in 1905 by Matty Mitchell, a Micmac Indian who was prospecting for The Anglo Newfoundland Development Company, which company was then preparing to build a paper mill at Grand Falls, some 50 miles east of Buchans. A development program, initiated in 1906, was terminated in 1911 because of metallurgical difficulties. Intermittent testing was carried out by The American Smelting and Refining Company, and in 1925 a satisfactory method of concentration by flotation was found. Following this, intensive geophysical reconnaisasnce, succeeded by diamond drilling, uncovered two additional orebodies similar to the original discovery at Buchans River."

"A pressure oxidation plant to pretreat refractory sulphide ore at the Goldstrike plant in Nevada, was commissioned in early February 1990. The plant, with a nominal capacity of 1363 t/d, was commissioned over a one-week period and achieved design capacity and availability within ten weeks an unusually short period for a plant of this complexity.The pressure oxidation process is conducted under elevated temperature and pressure conditions, and in a corrosive environment. These conditions demand that the process and engineering design of the plant be carried out in a much more sophisticated and detailed manner than is normally required in a conventional gold plant.This paper provides an account of the process and engineering design of the Goldstrike pressure oxidation plant with special emphasis on the design of the vessels, slurry pumps, piping, valves, and control systems.BackgroundLocationThe Goldstrike property is located in Eureka County in northcentral Nevada on the Carlin geological trend. The mine is approximately 40 km northwest of the town of Carlin which is situated on Interstate Highway 80. The minesite is located 1700 m above sea level in the Tuscarora Mountains.Initial Goldstrike OperationsShallow, low-grade mineralization was discovered by diamond drilling in the Goldstrike area in the 1960s. A heap leach operation was established in the mid-I970s by the previous owners. The Post deposit was discovered in 1982. Gold production by mining and heap leaching reached I t/a (40 000 oz/a). American Barrick purchased the property in 1987 and started an aggressive program of deep drilling. This led to the discovery of the Betze and Deep Post deposits and established sufficient reserves to justify an initial 4100 t/d mill and a 5 500 000 t/a heap leach operation"

"Selective mining, such as post pillar cut and fill, is used in large, flat, irregularly shaped ore bodies where ground stability is to be maintained. This selective mining is used to open the stope to the full lateral extent of the ore body in order to minimize the dilution and maximise the recovery. For increased mining depth, design of the post pillar becomes more challenging since those pillars will eventually fail as mining progresses upwards. The post pillar should be designed such that failure does not occur at the early mining stage, such as at the first cut. After mining progresses upwards, the post pillars are expected to fail but be confined by backfill. In order to maximise ore recovery, both drift width and post pillar size must be designed adequately with a consideration of all geomechanic parameters. This paper will describe the process used to design post-pillar cut and fill for one of the ore bodies in Vale’s Copper Cliff Mine using a combination of both empirical deterministic and numerical modelling techniques. By utilizing both empirical deterministic and numerical modelling techniques drift width and post pillar size can be effectively designed. Current post pillar cut and fill design in the existing Vale operations are used to validate the design for Copper Cliff Mine. INTRODUCTIONCopper Cliff Mine is located within the Copper Cliff Offset in the limits of City of Greater Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, as shown in Figure 1. The Copper Cliff Offset extends about eight kilometres south from the Sudbury Igneous Complex into the footwall rocks. Until 2008, the current Copper Cliff Mine was operated as two separate mines i.e. North Mine and South Mine. However, as part of restructuring of Vale Ontario Operations, the North and South Mines were merged in 2009 to form the “Copper Cliff Mine”."

"The gold mines of Kirkland Lake are in Teck township, Timiskaming district, Ontario, latitude 48°9'N. and longitude 80°3'W., at an elevation of 1,038 feet above sea-level.There are seven contiguous producing mines in a length of 3;1/2 miles along the general east-west strike of the deposits. The seven mines are, in order from west to east, Macassa, Kirkland Lake, Teck-Hughes, Lake Shore, Wright-Hargreaves, Sylvanite, and Toburn.The first discovery of gold in the zone was made by W. H. Wright in 1911 on the east claim of the Wright-Hargreaves property, and the following year the Tough brothers and H. Oakes found gold in what is now the No. 1 vein_ at the Toburn. Production began at the Toburn in 1915, followed by Teck-Hughes in 1917, Lake Shore in 1918, Kirkland Lake Gold in 1919, Wright-Hargreaves in 1921, Sylvanite in 1927, and Macassa in 1933.To the end of 1946, 31,938,350 tons of ore had been milled at the Kirkland Lake mines, from which 16,132,700 oz. gold, having a value of $498,517,600, were recovered. The bullion varies from mine to mine between 800 and 900 fine, the average for all the mines being 853. "This new tool can be used as a quick guide f or the assessment of the potential economic wealth of any risky capital project. It does provide an unambiguous recommendation of the type ""go or no go"" to the decision-maker simply by comparing two different ratios profit/investment. One ratio determines the minimum value required to at least break even while the other measures a probable value based on the asymptotic theory of statistical extremes.Its application is briefly illustrated by means of an underground gold mine extension project, an oil sands mine project and a polymetallic open pit project.Once a favourable recommendation has been obtained then a detailed ""cash flow after taxes"" analysis can be carried out for the project.IntroductionMany tools are used in financial decision-making such as the payback period, the discounted cash flow, the internal rate of return and the wealth growth rate (Berry , 1971).These tools are useful and meaningful in evaluating normal projects closely related to regular business where the number of assumptions made is usually very small and where the cost of capita! is usually selected as a discount rate or a hurdle value. In situations where a significant number of assumptions have to be made,two problems can emerge, namely:I. the risk involved is underestimated leading to a potential financial disaster; or2. a good opportunity is lost because the approach used in evaluating the project is too conservative.Each assumption has its own degree of uncertainty and it is well known that combining uncertainties together can lead to a total uncertainty of critical proportion. The easiest way to account for risk is to increase the discount rate or the hurdle value, but this approach alone is quite subjective and can easily lead to the problems described above."

"Nickel and cobalt are the main value metals in nickel laterite ore. Cyanex 272 is an extractant used to separate nickel from cobalt present in leach solutions. Previous studies demonstrated the extraction of cobalt, magnesium and manganese at pH 5 using Cyanex 272 as extractant, while nickel remained in aqueous solution. However, it is difficult to separate cobalt from a solution containing magnesium and manganese. One possibility to change the metals’ behavior during the solvent extraction process is to change the mixture of extractants used. In order to study the solvent extraction of cobalt from a solution containing manganese, magnesium and nickel, a mixture of two extractants was investigated. Cyanex 272 (CY) and Versatic 10 (VC) were selected as extractants in the organic phase. The extractant concentrations used were: 20% CY; 15% CY, 5% VC; 10% CY, 10% VC; 5% CY, 15% VC; and 20% VC. In all cases, kerosene was used as a diluent, at 80 vol%. The synthetic leach solution used in this study was prepared according to the composition of a typical nickel laterite leach solution. The pH value of the solution used was 5, and the aqueous/organic ratio used in solvent extraction testwork was 1/1. The study has shown that the composition of the organic extractant mixture did not increase cobalt separation.INTRODUCTION Sulfide and laterite deposits are the main sources of nickel. However, production from nickel sulfide ores has been decreasing over the years, relatively speaking, increasing the focus on the exploitation of laterite nickel ores (McDonald & Whittington, 2008). Laterite ore deposits are found in tropical and subtropical regions. A characteristic of laterite ores is the presence of a complex and heterogeneous mixture of metals (Crundwell, Moats, Ramachandran, Robinson, & Davenport, 2011; Georgiou & Papangelakis, 1998; Gupta, 2003; Kesler & Simon, 2015; Moskalyk & Alfantazi, 2002; Oliveira, 1990). Nickel concentrations in laterite ores are typically 1–2% (Dalvi, Bacon, & Osborne, 2004)."

I would like to thank you for spending the time with me today to review the FLIR PathFindIR thermal imaging camera system: It is truly an innovative safety system that has the added benefit of offering increased efficiency Our company the Winsted Group, specializes in mobile video systems that are fully customizable to address standard and unique operational requirements in a variety of industries from heavy equipment cameras to police and military digital recording systems, high end video camera systems are a hallmark of Winsted?s product line. The use of thermal imaging camera systems to enhance mobile safety is a relatively new concept as it relates to their use in both transportation and heavy equipment operation. This technology, like so many before it, has been adopted for civilian use from its military roots. The identification of enemy combatants through their heat signature has given our troops a decisive edge in military operations in total darkness Likewise, the ability to discern people and objects that give off heat is a significant step forward in collision and accident avoidance. The PathFindIR camera system that I am demonstrating today is so advanced that it cannot be exported outside of continental North America without a US government approved export license I would like to commence my presentation with a short video clip that discusses the technology associated with the FLIR PathFindIR Thermal Imaging camera systems. The video demonstrates the operational effectiveness of thermal imaging camera systems installed on a vehicle operating on the roadway at night, of course there are definite parallels to use in a mining environment, primarily the fact that lighting is limited and the chance for vision limiting dust is ever present. We are, of course more concerned with personnel safety in our mines than encountering wildlife on the roadside. From the same perspective, the transport driver is just as concerned with encountering a stalled vehicle as our mine truck operators are with other mine traffic.

LLOYDMINSTER is the centre of a well developed agricultural area, lying on the Alberta-Saskatchewan interprovincial boundary in Township Fifty. The surrounding country is gently undulating, without any notable topographic features, but twenty-two miles to the north the North Saskatchewan river, and thirty miles to the south the Battle river, have cut deep valleys. In the spring of 1934, a wild-cat well (Lloydminster Gas Company's No. 1 well) was successful in striking a large flow of gas at a depth o 1,974 ? feet. The gas was piped into the town, a short distance south, and Lloyd-minster became the first Saskatchewan town to be served with natural gas. Following this discovery, other wells were sunk and, up to the present, thirteen wells have been drilled m what is here designated the Lloydminster area. Ten of these wells are in Saskatchewan and three in Alberta. Seven were successful in obtaining gas, three oil, and three have been unsuccessful. The area tested by this drilling is about eight thousand acres, six thousand of which can be considered as proved gas or oil land. To the south and west of Lloydminster, in the Province of Alberta, there are several areas in which oil and gas have been discovered. The Wainwright field lies nearly fifty miles to the southwest; Battleview, where recently gas has been discovered, is thirty miles west-southwest; and the Ribstone area is about thirty miles south and a little west. At Ribstone, a number of wells were drilled some years ago and there is a small production of oil. The data relating to the wells in the Lloydminster area that are recorded in this paper are taken from the records of the several companies operating in the field. The names of these companies are given on the map and on the type stratigraphic section (Figures 1 and 2). The author wishes to record his appreciation to Mr. R. H. Shaw and Mr. 0. C. Yates, both of Lloyd-minster, for much valuable information; also to Mr. E. Swain, of the Department of Natural Resources, Regina, with whom the writer has visited the field on several occasions, and who, by his enthusiasm and encouragement, has done much to forward the development of the area. The well samples were examined at Ottawa by officers of the Borings Division of the Geological Survey of Canada, who also made the interpretations of the logs. Frequent references will be made to the work of Dr. G. S. Hume, of the Geological Survey, and the writer would like to pay tribute here to his work.

"In many areas of Saskatchewan, known gravel deposits have been depleted or are diminishing rapidly; in other areas, particularly in the north, demands for all-weather highways and access roads are far exceeding the supply of gravel sources with which to surface them. These two problems have made conventional methods of air-photo and ground surveys insufficient for gravel location. In the first case, hauling costs on construction now warrant searching for buried deposits and for smaller, less obvious surficial deposits that may be closer to the project. In the second case, search and access conditions are so difficult and costly that the ratio of successes to failures must be kept very high. The Department of Highways has long been aware of the oncoming scarcity of quality gravel deposits and is continually investigating ways of forestalling it. One of these ways is the use of airborne geophysical methods that permit rapid coverage of large areas and that sense and discriminate between earth properties to a significant depth below ground surface. In 1967, the Department began an investigation of an airborne conductivity survey method called INPUT*, or ""Induced Pulse Transient'', leading to a trial in 1968 and data analysis in 1969. The results of this trial initiated• modifications to the technique to improve its sensitivity for mapping shallow deposits. Part way through this modification in 1970, a decision was made to change to an airborne resistivity survey method called EPHASE*. Trials with this technique were conducted and analysed in 1971. This paper is an explanation of the E-PHASE system and a summary of the results from one of three areas mapped in 1971."

Approximately 50% of these lands, that are slated for residential, resort and recreation development, have been undermined for coal in one or more seams.Norwest Mine Services has been contracted by the developer to assess and advise them on any past mining activity that may be potentially hazardous to their development and offer solutions to how these hazards may be mitigated or avoided.The following paper deals mainly with the procedures put in place and accepted by the approval authorities, and the Staged approach to the Investigative Procedure that Norwest follows in the mining assessment and mitigation work for Three Sisters."

This paper describes the results of a laboratory study on the upgrading of Algoma siderite by the amine flotation of silica and silicate gangue. The experiments indicate that a virtually complete removal of silica is possible in a rougher flotation con-ducted in tap water at natural pH, without prior desliming of the ore. Grinding considerably finer than the apparent liberation size is essential for maximum silica rejection. A cationic collector, Aeromine 3037, gave best results when used in combination with a modifier. Of the several modifiers tested, a Dutch potato dextrin, Dextrin 4356, was found to be the most effective. Both iron recovery and the grade of the final iron product are enhanced by floating the pyrite contained in the ore prior to the amine flotation of the silica, and by scalping the magnetics from the silica concentrate. The Moab Khotsong Metallurgical Complex comprises a gold recovery circuit (Noligwa Gold Plant) and a uranium recovery circuit (South Uranium Plant). The metallurgical complex employs the reverse leach technology for the recovery of uranium; specifically, uranium extraction prior to gold using acid leaching processing. The inherent uranium species in the ore are uraninite, coffinite and brannerite. The slurry that has been subjected to the uranium leach is further subjected to solid-liquid separation to separate the uranium in solution through counter-current decantation and the solids (solids carrying all the gold), which are repulped and returned to the gold plant for gold processing. The uranium leaching process is critical to the uranium playing a pivotal role as a value adding by-product to the gold operation. The benefit of adopting this reverse leach process, for improved gold recovery, is that it exposes gold particles occluded within the uranium matrices and avails them for cyanidation. However, the drive for operational efficiency in uranium extraction must be weighed against the incremental operating cost against the backdrop of depressed spot uranium market prices. Over the years, efforts were directed at maintaining the benefit of extracting uranium to enhance gold recovery and simultaneously, optimizing the operating cost model for the uranium operation to remain relevant to the gold operation. The aim of this paper and the corresponding presentation is to give account of the uranium processing optimization journey embarked on over the years; namely, the operational trade-offs made in the process of ensuring that uranium continues to add value to the gold operation. These challenges were faced while striking a fine balance between processing cost and operational efficiencies against the prevailing depressed uranium spot market prices. Flotation works very well for particles that are typically in the range 20 to 150 µmin diameter, for base metal ores. In this range, it is possible to get quite high recoveries in conventional flotation machines. Outside this range, the recoveries decline progressively, whether it be with the very fine or the coarse end of the size spectrum. In this paper, the reasons for the drop-off in recovery are briefly reviewed, together with strategies for future work. Recent progress in the author's laboratory will be described. These include the Concorde Cell, which takes advantage of the high dissipation rates in the shock wave created when a gas-liquid mixture reaches supersonic velocities. The environment thus created is very beneficial for the flotation of ultrafines. For coarse particles, the reasons for the drop-off in recovery can be related to the highly turbulent nature of the pulp in a conventional flotation cell. To improve recovery, it is necessary to find a way of bringing particles and bubbles into contact in a quiescent environment. A new process for coarse particle flotation will be described, in which a fluidized bed is created in the flotation cell. The flow conditions are very gentle, and the high solids concentration leads to rapid rates of capture of the particles. Experimental results are presented. "The present study reports solvent extraction and separation of zinc from concentrated nickel sulfate solution. In our previous study, Zn and Cd in cold filter cake (CFC, 45-55% Zn, 11-16% Cd, and 2.5-4% Ni) were extracted by alkaline leaching followed by electrowinning processes respectively. The strip solution from electrowinning process, was a pregnant liquor solution (PLS) containing 16.8 g/l Ni and 4.2 g/l Zn. In this work, PLS is subjected to the solvent extraction process for separation of traces of Zn from high grade nickel. The zinc free raffinate containing 16.6 g/l Ni sulfate solution will flow to nickel electrowinning plant for cathode production. Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) is the organic phase used in this study. The effects of various parameters such as organic phase concentration (10- 40 % v/v), pH (1.5-3), and temperature (25 and 45°) are investigated. Zinc over nickel separation factor increases by increasing pH from1.5 to 3. The results show that 98.7% of Zn was loaded at25°C O/A ratio of 1, pH 3, and 10% vol. D2EHPA. A 10 M NaOH is used for pH control. However, replacement of pH controlling agent with ammonia solution (25%. v/v) results in interesting observations. Ammonia addition, reduces the solubility of Ni2+ cations in solution. Nickel starts to precipitate from raffinate in a crystalline bluish-green form. The obtained crystals are characterized by XRF and identified to be nickel-bearing analog of boussingaultite, a rare sulfate mineral of nickel with chemical formula of Ni (NH4)2(SO4)2.6H2O. The crystallization rate of crystals is studied. It is a slow precipitation process with 75% in 4 days.INTRODUCTION Annually, many hydrometallurgical processes such as electrowinning, solvent extraction and leaching are applied to waste filter cakes in Zanjan, Iran. These additional processes on filter cakes are critical from both environmental and economic points of view. CFC (cold filter cake) is a toxic but valuable filter cake (45-55% Zn, 11-16% Cd, 2.5-4% Ni, and 0.2-1.5% Cu) produced in many zinc production plants. Our research group at Research and Engineering Company for Non-ferrous Metals (ReCo.), developed a series of hydrometallurgical methods for extraction of zinc, cadmium and nickel from CFC (Moradkhani, & Rasouli 2012). The recovery of zinc and cadmium with alkaline leaching and electrowinning was successfully studied. The strip sulfate solution from cadmium electrowinning unit, contains high concentration of nickel with some traces of zinc impurity. This pregnant liquor solution (PLS) was analyzed and reported to contain 16.8 g/l Ni and 4.2 g/l Zn. In this work, PLS is subjected to the solvent extraction process to separate Zn from nickel (Fig. 1). The organic phase stripping solution containing 4.2 g/l zinc and 200 ppm nickel can be circulated and used in the acidic leaching step. This generates nickel solution with high purity suitable for nickel cathode production."
