Abstract Golden Manitou Mines, Limited, nine miles east of the town of Val d'Or in northwestern Quebec, are presently milling, at the rate of 1,000 tons daily, a relatively complex 3.11-phide ore and producing, in decreasing order of value, zinc, silver, gold, lead, and copper. The products are a zinc concentrate, a silver-lead-copper concentrate, and a silver-gold precipitate from cyanidation. Although several independent pre-production metallurgical investigations into the treatment of the ore were carried out, current practice is different from any of the recommended methods and, while still leaving room for improvement, is considerably more effective than earlier performance. Flow-sheet developments from the commencement of operations in 1942 are dealt with briefly, showing the reasons for making numerous changes, the shortcomings of the various schemes tried, and, finally, covering data pertinent to present-day practice. From the recovery standpoint, silver has presented the greatest difficulty. The writer's association with the Company coincided with the start of production. Characteristics of the Ore The predominant metallic minerals present in the ore, in decreasing order of their abundance, are: pyrite, sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite, with lesser amounts of argentiferous tennantite-tetrahedrite, arsenopyrite, covellite, bornite, and chalcocite. The sphalerite is mostly light in colour, sometimes colourless, and practically free from combined iron. Some of the sphalerite is very closely associated with minor amounts of pyrite, chalcopyrite, and galena. Pyrie is abundantly disseminated as medium to fine grains; more rarely it is massive and contains occasional grains of sphalerite, galena, and chalcopyrite.

As an occupational culture, mining comes with its own set of rules, agendas and values. Yet mines often also operate in the traditional territories of indigenous communities, with whom specific agreements are negotiated that commit to respect culture, economy and environment. Mines in these locations employ extremely diverse workforces whose value systems often come into conflict in on-the-job relationships. Adaptation of individual worker attitudes and industrial operating culture thus both need to occur if there is to be the negotiation of a workable relationship. This paper will discuss ways that NWT diamond mines have adapted to their workforce, to ensure that rights and cultures of their diverse workforce can be respected. Historically, the concept of culture has been dealt with solely through the forum of ?cross-cultural? workshops. Gibson presents a model of a new type of ?cultural-engagement? workshop based on the top ten cross-cultural conflicts that actually arise at a remote mine-site. This model helps managers, team leaders, and workers to tackle in-mine conflicts that arise based on differing value systems of aboriginal and non-aboriginal workers and management. In addition, Gibson suggests that the concept of culture must be more rigorously applied throughout the mine structure and not discussed only in the forum of the cross-cultural workshop.

"In February 1980, Dome Mines Limited announced a $50 million expansion program which would result in a 50% increase in mill capacity from the present 1,815 tonnes per day to an eventual production rate of 2, 720 tonnes per day in the year 1984. As an integral and necessary part of this planned expansion, a new vertical production shaft, No. 8 Shaft, would be sunk from surface to a depth of 1,645 metres.Throughout the seventy-year history of mining at the Dome, gold has been found in a number of different rock types and in association with a number of different structural settings. However, the key to successfully locating ore deposits lies in the recognition of the favourable environments in which they generally occur. First and foremost, the exercise of locating the No. 8 shaft became an exercise in geological deduction based on the projection of these favourable lithologic environments.In November 1980, after detailed engineering work was completed, the total cost of the project was estimated at $75.5 million 1980 dollars or $91 million dollars allowing for inflation over a four-year construction period. These estimates include the shaft, significant replacement and alterations to the milling process, and an upgrading of the plant."

Newmont Ghana Gold Limited?s Ahafo operation have been working with Metso Process Technology & Innovation (PTI) since early 2009 to increase mill throughput from a combination of controlled blasting practices and optimised primary crusher and grinding circuit conditions. For such Mineto- Mill projects, PTI?s methodology is termed Process Integration & Optimisation (PIO). Ahafo operate a SAG mill, ball mill and pebble crusher (SABC) circuit that processes a range of primary ore of varying hardness from different pits which is blended with soft oxide material. The PTI study focussed on ball mill limited material from the Apensu open pit. Following a benchmarking study of all blasting, crushing and grinding practices in January 2009, PTI recommended changes in both blasting and crushing conditions in order to generate a finer feed size to the SAG mill. Additional operating changes in the grinding circuit were recommended. A series of trials were conducted in November 2009 where three blasts were fired using a different blast design (hole diameter and explosive type) in the same area of the Apensu pit as the benchmarked material in January 2009. Top and bottom benches (or flitches) from each blast were sent exclusively to the grinding circuit and the material was tracked using PTI?s SmartTag? system. The results from the six trials showed a significant increase in primary ore throughput at a reduced blend of oxide material. Ahafo have since standardised on these modified blasting conditions for all Apensu ore zones and have been able to sustain higher throughput compared to historical performance on similar material. This paper summarises the phases of the PIO project, the changes made in operating practices and the outcomes of the blasting trials that validated the predicted increase in mill throughput.

Early detection of spontaneous combustion is of utmost importance in underground coal mining to prevent major disruptions of production and to ensure a safer working environment. This paper presents the work done in developing a suitable system for the early detection of heating in a hydraulic coal mine. Laboratory studies on the products of oxidation for Balmer 10 seam coal showed that a significant amount of carbon monoxide is produced during the early stages of heating and that detection methods based on the analysis of other gases, such as hydrogen, ethane or ethylene, are not a better alternative for this coal. The four-point carbon monoxide monitoring system recently installed at the hydraulic mine is discussed in this paper. It is believed that by studying the trend of carbon monoxide concentration in the mine air, it will be possible to detect heating at an early stage. Field tests carried out so far have indicated that infra-red technology will prove to be a powerful tool in the hydraulic mine, particularly for locating hidden oxidation or fire in cracks, fissures, underground workings and coal outcrop areas before it spreads extensively. The project is jointly sponsored by EMR, CANMET, Mining Research Laboratories and Kaiser Resources Ltd.

"Soil-gas Rn was measured by two types of alpha-particle-track detectors, by emanometry and by counting alpha-activity on Rn-decay-product collectors. Soil samples were analyzed for V by fluorimetric and fission-track methods, their Rn-emanation by decay-product collectors and their total alpha activities with track detectors. The same uranium anomalies were revealed by each method. Fission-track analysis of leaves for V showed only random variations with sampling site, and the Rn emanation of trees and leaves removed from them was barely detectable . The agreement among the other methods is significant, total alpha and collector methods are simple, rapid and useful, and a combination of methods at a site would reveal disequilibrium in the U-decay series if present. Track-Rn measurements are highly reproducible and insensitive to apparatus design and their sensitivity is not enhanced by covering the detectors with thin foil or placing them in large containers.IntroductionIn the past two years , a number of methods of geochemical exploration for uranium have been tested by the authors over the known copper-uranium occurrence at South March, Ontario. This was done partly to compare methods and partly to develop and test new ones. The South march deposit has been described a number of times by others(1,2,3,4). The methods included in this study were the following.Emanometry, Radon in soil gas is measured by pumping the gas into the cell of a scintillation counter or emanometer(5,6). Alpha particles from radon (222Rn) and its decay products (218Po and 214Po) produce scintillations of light in the silver-activated zinc sunphide (ZnS(Ag) covering the walls of the cell. These are counted by a photomultiplier tube and scaler, the count ra sulphide (ZnS(Ag) covering the walls of the cell. HPGRs have since introduced in the 1980s (Kellerwessel, 1993; Schönert, 1988), now become integral comminution units at several minerals processing plants around the world. Even though a lot of the initial issues concerning performance, availability and wear have been addressed and solved there are still phenomena and aspects which can be improved and understood further. Schönert and Sander (2002) presented experimental results and a mechanistic model including the internal force dynamics between the rollers and the compacted bed. They derived expressions for the pressure distribution involving most of the influencing terms and effects. However, in order to solve the differential equations several of the terms vanish by assumptions. The Schönert and Sander model reflects the experimental data in many aspects but the predicted shear force distinctly deviates from the experimental results at the angular position of the peak pressure level. This finding suggests that the particle to particle interaction and breakage process in the different zones seen in Figure 1 are complex and difficult to model using analytical models. A numerical modelling approach using DEM does not require the same amount of assumptions and simplifications of boundary conditions. Hence such modelling may provide further knowledge and vital understanding. In this paper the breakage process is simulated in order to investigate the shear slip behaviour and how it relates to different operating variables. A laboratory scale HPGR corresponding to the experimental setup used by Schönert (2002) have been modelled in EDEM (DEM-Solutions). The bonded particle model (BPM) is used for modelling quartz particles (Potyondy, 2004). The breakage model strength parameters are calibrated against interparticle breakage experiments in an Instron 400RD compression device. The contact model parameters are calibrated using calibration methods developed by Quist (2015). The floating roller dynamics are modelled using a spring-damper system. Results present insights regarding the interparticle slip behaviour as well as the frictional tangential force distribution on the rollers. The simulated roller pressure distribution shows good correspondence with previously reported findings in the literature.

This paper is intended to call attention to the manifold uses of limestone in industry; to indicate the types of limestone desired by some of the large consuming industries; and to give some information on the resources of limestone in Canada, so that an idea may be obtained of the present and future possibilities for limestone production. The word limestone is used in the usual broad sense to include both high-calcium limestone and the highly magnesian variety known as dolomite, as well as all intermediate types. Lime is simply calcined limestone, and in this general paper its uses have been included with those of raw limestone. It is of interest, in dealing with this subject, to glance back over the early history of the utilization of limestone, for by so doing we see that limestone has been of importance to mankind since the beginning of civilization and has contributed in no small measure to the development of a number of the arts and sciences. One of the first uses, if not the first use, of limestone was in connection with the making of lime for plastering purposes. This use antedates civilization. In the day of the ancient Greeks and Romans, the art of plastering had been brought to a state of perfection that is not nearly approached by the modern artisan.

"High-level radioactive wastes are stored in large underground storage tanks made of low-carbon steel. The wastes consist of concentrated solutions of sodium nitrate (NaNO3) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH), and the radionuclides 137Cs, 99Tc, and 90Sr. The corroding steel microenvironment may produce localized reducing or oxidizing conditions that affect the solubilities of the species such as Tc(VII) and Tc(IV), which in turn modifies the kinetics of corrosion of the storage tank. To understand the influence of technetate ions on the corrosion of steel, electrochemical polarization studies of A 537 steel samples were carried out in 1 M NaNO3 + 0 .05 M S r(NO3)2 + 0.1 M NaOH with and without addition of HReO4 at different temperatures (24 – 85 °C). The concentration of HReO4 was varied from 0.014 – 0.04 M.INTRODUCTIONAqueous processing of spent nuclear materials generates a large amount of high-level radioactive wastes. The wastes are primarily salt solutions of sodium hydroxide and sodium nitrate which also contain fission products such as 137Cs, 99Tc, and 90Sr. Among the high level radioactive fission products, Tc-99 is of great importance because of its high concentration, long half-life (2.1 x 105 years), high solubility in geologic waters as technetate, and rapid diffusivity through the geologic systems. The solubility of technetate ions varies depending on the oxidizing conditions prevailing in the storage containers. High level radioactive wastes are stored in single shell or double shell tanks made of low carbon steels such as ASTM type A15, A516-70 and A537. Most of the available literature on corrosion of steel in simulated radio active waste environments pertains to nitrate induced stress corrosion cracking (Subramanian & Mickalonis, 2005). The corroding steel microenvironment may produce localized reducing or oxidizing conditions that affect the solubilities of the species such as Tc(VII) and Tc(IV). Corrosion of steel and formation of Fe(II) and Fe(III) will affect adsorption and reduction of Tc species. The radioactive species can irreversibly be sorbed on the steel surface by oxidation of Fe(II) to more stable Fe(III) and fixed as less soluble Tc(IV)/Fe(III). The solubility of Tc species is also affected by other factors such as dissolved oxygen, local pH, temperature etc. How the corrosion behavior of steel will be affected in the presence of Tc species is not clearly understood.Cartledge (Cartledge, 1960) demonstrated that passivation of iron can be achieved in the presence of oxygen along with suitable inhibitor ions/molecules of the general formula XO4 n-, such as pertechnetate (TcO4 -). The pertechnetate ion is univalent. Since it is derived from a strong acid, no buffering action can be expected from this ion. The redox potential of the reaction (1) is 0.738 VSHE (Pourbaix, 1974)."

During the past 10 years, research work to improve the survey of stope limits after mining supplied useful information, particularly for large open and sub-level stopes, regarding waste dilution caused by differences between final production limits and planned stope limits. However, the efficiency of this information to improve the overall efficiency of the mining process is limited, given that the impacts of inaccurate ore limits leading to dilution (sensu stricto) and ore losses haw not been considered adequately. Geological/sampling information should be optimized in terms of quantity and/or quality for the deposit characteristics and the constraints of the mining method used. As industry practice regarding the definition and recording of dilution is flexible and as ore losses frequently am poorly doc-umented, the use of these terms is reviewed. Simulations were carried out on two typical narrow gold deposits, based on an earlier study at Inco's Thompson mine regarding the impacts of wide to narrow delineation grids using recorded variations of vein geometry. Vertical to sub-vertical deposits of 3 m and 6 m widths mined by long-hole open stopes were considered. Deposits delineated by 7.5 m (25 ft) grids were taken as a base case and the impacts of less accurate limits in conjunction with long hole mining based only on a 15 m (50 ft) delin¬eation grid. The impacts of overestimation (dilution) and underestimation (metal losses) were considered separately, using the average error of +/-0.62 m recorded in the Inco study. The impact of less accurate information was much stronger on the narrower deposit: both dilution and ore losses diminished the net present value of the 3 m wide deposit by 39.27% and 45.41%, respectively, and that of the 6 m wide deposit by 12.84% and 11.55%. As the impacts of ore loss and those of dilution on the net present value am almost identical in these simulations, we could, in practice, assume a 50/50 split between dilution and ore losses in such a case. These results do no take into account the effects of local optimization measures taken at the mine production level (blasthole sampling near stope limits, etc.) The potential impacts of geological and sampling uncertainties in terms of lower NPV justify and require more systematic efforts to ensure that deposit appraisal work and feasibility studies are adequate to optimize company revenue and competitive returns to investors from mine production activities.

"The Bralorne-Pioneer deposit produced more gold than any other deposit in British Columbia over its 70 years of operation (130 kg or 4 million oz of Au, from 7 million tonnes of 18 glt ore). Mineralization is related to a suite of late Cretaceous albitite dykes of 85 to 90 Ma age. It thus occurred long after and is genetically unrelated to the Early Permian (275 Ma) Bralorne diorite and soda granite.The major veins strike about 110 degrees and dip north at 70 degrees, with slickensides plunging 45 degrees east that indicate last movement was reverse. Major ore shoots in the veins occupy somewhat less than 20% of the vein and plunge steeply west, roughly perpendicular to the slickensides. The structures that contain the veins probably formed at around 95 to 90 Ma during a strike-slip episode with easterly directed maximum compression.Disseminated pyrite, pyrrhotite, and minor chalcopyrite occur within envelopes up to several metres from the veins. Arsenopyrite is confined to vein selvages. Local sphalerite and galena appear to correlate with gold-rich portions of the veins. Traces of tetrahedrite and stibnite have been observed but tellurides have not. Gold is found principally as thin smeared flakes of the native metal in the black sulphidic septae of the strongly ribboned veins. Hydrothermal alteration envelopes around the veins grade outwards from intensely foliated quartz - ankerite - sercite (±fuchsite) to less sheared calcite - chlorite - albite to unsheared epidote -calcite.Open-space vein filling textures found in the deep (mesothermal) environment at Bralorne can be explained by a fault- valve model. High-angle reverse faults may have acted as fluid-pressure activated valves on geopressured reservoirs, causing large cyclic fluctuations in fluid pressure that promoted mineral deposition in an episodic fashion . The faults that were mineralized were reactivated sub-vertical former strike slip faults, oriented at a high angle to the northeast-directed stress in a compressive regime."

At the last Annual Meeting of the Institute, Dr. C. V. Corless sketched the potential mineral wealth of Canada so clearly, graphically and with-all so entertainingly that one's imagination was fired with the promise held out to future generations for the tremendous expansion of the mining industry in the Dominion. Posterity will undoubtedly witness the fruit of much of the geographical search and survey that is now carried on by our government mining departments. Year after year the work advances, slowly but surely, new areas are . explored, older areas are surveyed in detail, the information being compiled in maps and reports of incalculable value to the prospector, the engineer and the general public. The immensity of the task of exploring, geologically, the outlying portions of the country, with the ultimate view of making valuable mineral discoveries, may be visualized from a study of Dr. Corless' paper and the subsequent discussion which took place and one becomes impressed with the fact that three-quarters or more of the problem can be included under the word "transportation". For instance Dr. Corless said, "The few geological explorers who have penetrated to these remoter regions . . . . . . have as a rule been compelled to stick closely to canoe routes,"; Dr. Goodwin remarked, "This barren Laurentian granite, which is put down on the maps as covering the greater part of this area, is the best guess the geologist could make from travelling along watercourses Within the next few years . . . . . . the Timiskaming and Northern Ontario railway will undoubtedly be extended to James Bay . . . . . . In order that we may be prepared for the probable influx of prospectors when transportation facilities to tidewater are provided, I think all available information on this district should be gathered together in handy form." All three-Corless, Goodwin and Cole-emphasize the well-known fact that explorers, geologists and prospectors working in new country must stick to the watercourses and that transportation by rail, road or water has always been the all-important deciding factor in facilitating the exploration and development of remote districts. Dr. Corless did, however, suggest other means of transportation in stating, "The aeroplane will be of assistance in future study of some parts of these remote areas."

The conventional low temperature process for extracting' helium from natural gas involves liquefying the whole gas stream in order to remove the relatively small fraction of helium. A process based on the selective diffusion of helium through a semi-permeable barrier is, in principle, more economical and flexible, particularly for the treatment of small re-serves and low concentrations. The well-known permeability of glass to helium offers the possibility of such a diffusion process and McAfee of the Bell telephone Laboratories showed in 1958 that practical separations could be achieved by passing natural gas over bundles of fine capillary glass tubing. Developmental studies have been carried out involving larger units and more extended field tests than those of McAfee. Fine capillary tubing of Pyrex glass 0.0035 in. diameter was prepared by drawing ordinary 6 mm. laboratory tubing in a furnace. The mechanical properties of Mg-Gd and Mg-Y solid solutions have been studied under uniaxial tension and compression between 4K and 298K. The results reveal that Mg-Gd alloys exhibit higher strength and ductility under tension and compression attributed to the more effective solid solution strengthening effect and grain boundary strengthening. Profuse twinning has been observed under compression, resulting in a material texture with strong dominance of basal component parallel to compression axis. Under tension, twining is less active and the texture evolution is affected mostly by slip. The alloys exhibit pronounced yield stress asymmetry and significantly different work-hardening behaviour under tension and compression. Increasing of Gd and/or Y concentration leads to the reduction of the tension-compression asymmetry due to the weakening of the recrystallization texture and more balanced twinning and slip activity during plastic deformation. The results suggest that under compression of Mg-Y alloys slip is more active than twinning in comparison to Mg-Gd alloys.

"The availability of fresh water to meet present and future needs in Ontario is of concern to an increasing number of people. Rain and snow are the source of our potable water and provide, on the average, some 180,-000 billion gallons of water annually. This amount is reduced to 94 billion gallons a day as a result of the evaporation and transpiration of water and our inability to construct the necessary reservoirs for capturing surplus stream flow.The water used for domestic, irrigation, public supply and industrial purposes amounts to some 7 billion gallons daily at present and will reach 21 billion gallons daily by the year 2000; however, only about one-fifth of the water used is actually consumed, and this, along with the possibilities of water re-use, improves the water supply picture still further.The need for adequate pollution control has accompanied industrial and urban expansion and is an important factor in the extent to which our surplus water is used. In the 10-year period since the formation of the Ontario Water Resources Commission, the cost of water and sewage works constructed in the Province has exceeded one billion dollars. A special effort is now being made to control the industrial pollution situation.Numerous federal and provincial agencies are engaged in hydrologie studies in the Province, providing in-formation of benefit to those involved with water resources management."

The merit of reduction-in-area as a criterion of quality in metals is shown to lie in its influence on breaking stress, but the virtue of elongation is not easy to find. In order to assess the value of elongation, either as a measure of quality or as a guide to design, it will be necessary to separate the overall de-formation occurring in tension tests from the localized deformation associated with localized reduction in area. The obstacles to a successful solution of this problem have been shown to be more formidable than is generally appreciated, and a new solution to the problem has been suggested. This solution involves a de-vice by which an electric circuit is broken when the particular value of strain is reached that is to be taken as the point of separation between general and localized deformation. The report presents results from a number of tests on both low-carbon and alloy steels. "Interest in the efficient production and recycling of rare earth elements has increased in recent years along with the prices of these elements. The molten LiCl-KCl eutectic is one ionic solvent which can be utilized for these purposes. The LiCl-KCl eutectic has also been selected as the electrolyte for focused research for advanced pyrochemical recycling processes for used nuclear fuel in several nations. Rare earth elements are fission products with notable neutron absorption characteristics, and thorough understanding of the properties and behavior of these elements is critical to their successful partition from the electrochemically-similar actinide elements. The number of research papers investigating individual rare earth elements has greatly expanded in the approximately 35 years since the last review. These research papers are presented in a variety of languages and technical formats, making data difficult to compare, and are sometimes contradictory. A review and summary of diffusion properties of rare earths in LiCl-KCl eutectic was performed, and the data translated to a common format for evaluation. INTRODUCTIONThe rare earth elements have experienced growing importance in recent decades due to their application in high technology, including optical lenses, lasers, high-temperature superconductors, improved alloys, high energy-density batteries, and powerful magnets for compact electronic devices. Their historic production methods and uses are detailed in several texts (Hampel 1971; Bautista &Jackson 1992; Gupta & Krishnamurthy 2005). A s the p rice o f these e lements has r isen in r ecent years, so has interest in their efficient production and possible recycling options. Rare earth oxides are concentrated through hydrometallurgical techniques, but the high thermochemical stability of their oxides precludes production of rare earth metals in aqueous systems. However, the wide electrochemical window and better control of pO2- in fused salt systems allows the production of these reactive metals from their halides or oxides. The high ionic conductivity and diffusivity of the molten ionic electrolyte allow high currents with limited resistive losses (Fray 1980). Electrolytic methods in fused salts are commonly adopted for the production of bulk rare earths in a variety of molten salt systems. Fluorides are sometimes proposed for oxide electrowinning processes due to ability to dissolve the rare earth oxide, reduced hygroscopic behavior, and the wider electrochemical separation between O2 and halide gas evolution (Mohan Das, Damodaran et al. 1988; Gibilaro, Pivato et al. 2011). However, in most electrolytic production processes, such as that for mischmetal, the rare earth oxides are converted to chloride prior to electrolysis in a chloride bath (Gschneidner Jr. & Eyring 1978; Sharma 1987). Of the chlorides, the LiCl-KCl eutectic is one specific medium in which metal production and production-related investigations have been conducted (Gschneidner J r. & Eyring 1978; Driscoll & Fray 1993). L iCl-KCl eutectic has the advantages o f h igh conductivity, but relatively low viscosity and operating temperature. The low operating temperature allows simpler design, with reduced energy consumption, salt volatility and cell corrosion."

Corrosion is a major operational problem in amine-treating plants causing significant expenditures each year, Corrosion may become more severe when the amine plants contain process contaminants ? namely heat-stable salts. The heat-stable salts enter the plants with feed-gas streams and makeup-solution, and/or are produced within the plants by reactions of alkanolamine and available carboxylic-acid anions, This work investigated interaction corrosion effects that may exist in amine-treating plants containing a mixture of heat-stable salts, The investigation was experimentally carried out in a 5 kmol/m3 monoethanolamine (MEA) solution containing 0,20 mol/mol carbon dioxide (CO2) loading at 80°C under atmospheric pressure using carbon steel 1018, Six heat-stable salts, including formate, oxalate, bicine, acetate, thiosulfate and chloride, were tested with a series of salt combinations, Potentiodynamic Polarization, Tafel Extrapolation, and Cyclic Polarization were used for revealing corrosion behavior, determining corrosion rate, and examining the pitting tendency, respectively, Results show that thiosulfate induces the most corrosive environment when present either individually or in the form of salt mixtures.

"In the past, the metallurgical industry was most of the time dedicated on their main commodity, recovering base metals like zinc, copper or lead but leaving other valuable side elements in the generated residues. As a result, these accompanying minor elements, like gold, silver, indium or also PGMs can be found in the dumps of the corresponding industry. Because of political unrest, strikes, economic reasons or decreasing primary resources leading to a high supply risk, also those mentioned minor elements moved into the focus of the recycling industry. Therefore, beside the base metals, first of all the recovery of those minor metals would be of high interest contributing to the economic viability of recycling processes, although they occur in much smaller quantities in materials. In this context, residues from zinc industry, like leaching residues or precipitation residues show high potential to carry silver as well as indium next to lead and zinc. Therefore, the paper summarizes carried out thermochemical calculations investigating a possible recovery of silver as well as indium by volatilization and the influence of zinc and lead on this process. Based on these theoretical investigations with HSC, trials in lab scale were done verifying the obtained results.INTRODUCTIONHuge amounts of iron precipitate, mainly jarosite get landfilled every year although there is a high content of valuable metals in this residue beside iron. Nevertheless, jarosite has to be dumped due to the presence of contaminating heavy metals. The accumulation of these residues takes up massive land on the one hand but also causes a series of environmental problems in ecosystems on the other. Moreover, some toxic ingredients such as arsenic and cadmium can be dissolved in rain water and are therefore harmful to the health of the aquatic systems. (Erdem & Özverdi, 2011; ÖzverdI & Erdem, 2010) Approximately 0.5 t of dry jarosite accumulate in the production of 1 t of zinc by the hydrometallurgical zinc-winning route (Svens, 2010). Jarosite is a precipitation residue formed during the iron removal. In general, the iron already exists in the zinc ore which is why zinc ferrite builds up during the roasting step of the zinc ore. Zinc ferrite is only soluble in strongly acidic solutions and during the hot acid leaching step it gets dissolved while zinc and iron enter the solution. It is necessary to get rid of the iron because otherwise it would deposit on the cathode first due to its precious character which would be harmful in the zinc-winning electrolysis. Nevertheless successful investigations were done by adding chlorine to the jarosite to recover silver. These findings leads to another residue which occurs in huge amounts – electric arc furnace dust (abbreviated with EAFD) from the iron and steel industry. In 2013 the annual electric steel production reached about 451 million tons. Around 15-20 kg of EAFD is produced per ton of steel in an electric arc furnace (EAF), creating approximately up to 9 million tons of dust per year. (Grabda, Oleszek, Shibata, & Nakamura, 2014; World Steel Association) Next to elements like zinc, lead and iron, chlorine and fluorine are present in this dust. While galvanized steel plates in the scrap act as a source for zinc, casting powders, flame retardants and synthetic coatings are responsible for the chlorine and fluorine contents in the dust."
