Commercial tellurium commonly contains heavy basemetal impurities such as lead, copper, iron, etc., as well as selenium and oxygen. The base metals may be removed by vacuum distillation or by zone melting. Vacuum distillation is a convenient method for treating moderate quantities (~ 100 kg.) for the production of a material having a total content of heavy metals in the 10-30 ppm range. By zone melting, it is possible to lower all the heavy metal impurities tm below the limits of spectrographie detection. Neither vacuum distillation nor zone melting is effective for the removal of selenium, but treatment of molten tellurium with hydrogen converts selenium to hydrogen selenide. This procedure is too s low to be considered except as an adjunct to zone melting. In the course of air-melting, many of the more easily oxidized impurities form a dross and may thus be readily removed. Substantial refinement with respect to iron, tin, chromium, aluminum, sodium, silicon, magnesium, calcium and manganese can be achieved in this way. Although tellurium can be electrodeposited from either acid or alkaline solutions of the dioxide, various factors militate against successful electro-refining, amongst which may be mentioned the brittleness of cast tellurium anodes and the tendency for the metal to be deposited in dendritic form, even at low current densities.

With the increased use of mechanized rock excavation, there have been developed internationally a number of methods to assess the abrasivity of rock materials. These methods range from determination of abrasive and hard mineral content using petrographic thin section analysis to weight loss or rate of wear flat development on specified test pieces. The Cerchar abrasivity index (CAI) test has been widely accepted for the assessment of rock abrasiveness and is determined as the abrasion of a steel pin after scratching over the freshly-broken or saw-cut surface of a rock. Two types of testing devices are in use today: (i) the original ‘Cerchar apparatus’, and (ii) the ‘West apparatus’, which was adopted herein. The CAI is calculated from the measured diameter of the resulting wear flat on the steel pin after 10mm scratching. This test has been considered to provide a reliable indication of rock abrasiveness for isotropic rocks. However, a great amount of rocks in natureis anisotropic. Phyllite is an anisotropic and foliated metamorphic rock and various types of phyllite specimens were tested in this research. Although phyllite is a type of rock primarily composed of quartz and the expected CAI value can be high, mechanical cutting of this rock should not be very problematic compared with igneous rocks have same CAI value. As phyllite is a foliated metamorphic rock, most of the specimens split into sheets through the quartz seam by the tip during scratching normal to the axis of quartz seams. Hence, viability assessment of Cerchar abrasivity test and F-Schimazek index values for the anisotropic rocks is investigated in this research.

The Ilo Smelter has been continuously operating since 1960 with Reverberatory furnaces and Pierce Smith converters producing blister copper. The original installed capacity of 1.134 tons per day of concentrated was expanded in 1976. A process of modernization started in 1995 and 1998 with the installation of an El Teniente Converter, a sulfuric acid plant and an oxygen plant to reduce the gaseous emissions to the atmosphere. With the official approval of the Environmental Compliance and Management Program (Programa de Adecuaci6n y Manejo Ambiental - PAMA) in January 1997, Southern Peru Copper Corporation made a commitment to capture 91. 7% of the S02 generated at the smelter by January 2007. After an evaluation of six different technologies, the ISASMEL T process was selected because it can be easily adapted to the present operation, has a lower capital cost and it is a simple process. The fast learning curve to reach the total capacity will allow to fulfill the PAMA commitment in time. The project construction is in process and SPCC is prepared for a successful start-up and transition of the current operations at the end of year 2006. This paper outlines the factors considered by SPCC in its choice of ISASMEL T technology and describes the construction and the start-up activities of the new facilities.

"A 4-ft.-diameter shaft has been drilled to a depth of 2,790 ft. in strong, hard, basic Precambrian rocks at Lynn Lake Manitoba. This was done on the property of Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited for the purpose of ventilating and developing the ""N"" orebody, which is located approximately 4,000 ft. south of the Farley shaft.The drilling was done under contract by two drilling companies. Peter Bawden Drilling (1964) Limited drilled the initial 12:1,4-in. pilot hole to a depth of 3,000 ft. Shaft Drillers Limited of Canada then reamed the hole to 4 ft. in diameter to a depth of 2,790 ft. At this point, the reaming was stopped because of the difficulty in passing a change in direction in the line of the pilot hole. The hole was completed by driving a raise 200 ft. from the 3000 level to the bottom of the 4-ft. hole using an Alimak raise climber.Cuttings from the reaming operation were directed into the 12:1,4-in. pilot hole, where they fell to the 3000 level and were removed by a mucking machine and standard mine development cars.The elapsed time from the start of the pilot hole to the completion of the reaming operation was ten months, with an average advance of 279ft. per month. There was a two-month delay between the completion of the pilot hole and the start of the reaming operation.The 12:1,4-in. hole was drilled in an elapsed time of 45 days from the time of setting up the rig. The average advance per day was 66.8 ft.The reaming operation was done in an elapsed time of 194 days. A one-month delay required to repair damaged equipment left 163 days for the drilling and setting-up operation, for an advance per day of 17.1 ft."

"Abstract - The Boston deposit is a recently discovered Archean lode-gold deposit located approximately 700 km northeast of Yellowknife, in the southern portion of the Hope Bay volcanic belt. Primary H2O-CO2-NaCl fluid inclusions associated with gold mineralization at Boston are of low salinity (4.6 ± 1.4 eq. wt.% NaCl, n = 182) and contain pure CO2. Homogenization temperatures of liquid-phase inclusions average 270° ± 33°C (n = 141), but some fluid inclusion assemblages contain coexisting liquid- and vapor-phase inclusions that homogenize near critical conditions, suggesting phase separation. In these groups, liquid-phase inclusions homogenized at 299° ± 25°C (n = 24), and vapor-phase inclusions homogenized at 338° ± 28°C (n = 18). These temperatures overlap within error, and a median temperature of ~320°C is taken as representative of trapping conditions within the veins. An approximate pressure of 2-3 kbar was estimated from fluid inclusion isochores at this temperature. Stable isotopic compositions of carbonate minerals from the mineralized zones range from -4.7‰ to -3.1‰ in d13C, and from 11.2‰ to 12.8‰ in d18O; quartz ranges from d18O = 12.8‰ to 14.9‰; and pyrite ranges from d34S = 2.1‰ to 3.5‰. The d18OH2O, d13CCO2, and d34SH2S values of the fluid calculated from these minerals at 320°C are 6‰-9‰, -2.4‰ ± 0.6‰, and 1.5‰ ± 0.5‰, respectively, and are intermediate between metamorphic and magmatic compositions. A unique source for the fluids cannot, therefore, be constrained from these data. Petrographic and geochemical data for the Boston deposit are consistent with data from other Archean lode-gold deposits worldwide, implying that the Boston deposit formed in a similar environment and from similar types of fluids. These results suggest that the Hope Bay volcanic belt may represent a major new mesothermal gold belt in this part of Nunavut. "Valuation methods are well established for mineral properties with production or imminent production, and include discounted cash flow and comparable transactions. Valuation methods for non-producing mineral properties, however, are more subjective. Non-producing mineral properties include those at various stages of exploration, properties at the prefeasibility or feasibility stage, properties with currently uneconomic mineral resources, and past-producers. Different valuation methods may be appropriate for different types of mineral properties.Income approach methods such as discounted cash flow and option pricing are generally not applicable to properties at the exploration stage. The market approach is generally appropriate to all types of mineral properties, although it is difficult to find good comparables because of the unique nature of mineral properties and the small number of transactions. Cost approach methods, such as appraised value and geoscience factor, are commonly used for exploration stage properties.Canadian standards and guidelines for valuation of mineral properties are in the process of being finalized by a Special Committee of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIMVal Committee). The CIMVal Standards are intended to be consistent with National Instrument 43-101, which sets regulatory standards of disclosure for mineral projects, and with International Valuation Standards. The intent of the CIMVal Standards and Guidelines is that mineral property valuation be carried out by appropriately qualified individuals and that all relevant information be disclosed."

"The ocean has served humanity as a source of raw materials for thousands of years, but only on a minimal scale relative to its potential. Exploration programs have shown the ocean to contain a large number of mineral deposits of great extent and attractive grade. Recent research has indicated that a number of these deposits can be economically exploited with present-day technology and that the cost of winning many industrially important minerals from the oceanic deposits is potentially much less than that of winning similar minerals from land deposits. Although the finding of mineral deposits in the sea is a relatively simple matter at the present time, the exploitation of many of these deposits has lagged due to the lack of the availability of specific mining techniques for the individual deposits. Within the past two years, however, several developments have taken place in the design and testing of ocean mining systems in depths of water as great as 12,000 feet which indicate that the problem of mining in the ocean may soon be solved.Within the next decade, the ocean should prove to be a major source of many minerals for society and should come to dominate as a source of such metals as copper, nickel, cobalt, manganese, etc. Within a few years of the initiation of the mining of the deep-sea metalliferous nodules, land sources of such metals as nickel, cobalt, copper, manganese, etc. will be seriously affected and it is conceivable that the present structure of the world mining industry will undergo a substantial change in character."

This paper describes results of an investigation of fracture during tube expansion of 5052 and 5754 aluminum seam-welded tubes to optimize the forming of aluminum tubes during hydroforming. The tubes were produced in laboratory by press forming of tubular blanks and pilot-scale high frequency induction welding. The effect of property mismatch between the weld and base metal has been investigated. The material work-hardening was obtained by roll forming of sheet blanks in the 0-temper and H32 temper condition. The results showed that a significant work-hardening can be present in aluminum tube without causing weld fracture during tube expansion. The work-hardening increases the yield-strength mismatch between base metal and weld. Annealing reduces the hardness of base metal leading to more uniform deformation during tube expansion. As a result the occurrence of weld fracture is reduced. The study showed significant deformation of the welds during tube expansion. Weld thinning can be as large as parent-material thinning before fracture. To avoid fracture at the weld joint, good formability and high yield strength of the weld is needed. FEM simulation showed that minimizing the width of the weld joint can reduce thinning of the weld.

Coal comprises 71% of our fossil energy and with rapidly advancing handling and burning technology will clearly play a major role in our national energy mix, eventually as synthetic gases and liquids.International coal markets are very competitive and Canada is disadvantaged by long rail hauls to port, and a heavy tax burden. However, high mine productivity has allowed us to increase our markets.Currently, domestic markets are dominated by coal use for electrical generation, a market with significant growth opportunities.Strong growth is expected in export thermal markets, while metallurgical coal demand is projected to show little or no growth in the medium term. IntroductionThe coal industry is a vital part of the Canadian energy scene .• Coal supplies 17% of Canada's energy.• On a per capita basis, Albertans use more energy in the form of coal than they do oil and gas.• The value of Canada's exports of coal last year was equal in value to all the cars we imported from Japan.• Coal is our largest single export to our seco nd largest trading partner, Japan.• The value of coal produced in Canada exceeds the value of any other single mineral produced in thi s country.• In Alberta, the safety record for coal mines is on a par with that of department store clerks.• The coal industry employs about 25% of the total number of people employed in all metal mines in Canada, directly and indirectly accounting for about 50 000 jobs.Coal comprises 71% of Canada' s hydrocarbon energy resources on a crude oil equivalent basis . This is more than double our oil sands resource and dwarfs our conventional crude oil and gas resources (Fig. I). In the short term, coal as a solid fuel plays a significant part in the Canadian energy scene. In the longer term, coal, in the form of electricity and eventually liquids and gases, has a tremendous role to play. In 1986, Canada produced 57.8 million tonnes, slightly down from the record high of 60.8 million tonnes in 1985. Our exports in 1986 were 26.0 million tonnes, a growth of 53% in three years."

Ausmelt Top Submerged Lancing (TSL) Technology has gained widespread commercial acceptance in non-ferrous applications, including the processing of lead and zinc primary concentrates and secondary (post-consumer) materials. TSL is highly flexible and efficient, and is one of the few technologies which can process primary and secondary feeds, and use varying fuels, to deliver high recoveries and excellent environmental performance. With the recent high value of both lead and zinc, and an escalating awareness of the sustainable use of resources, focus on the processing of secondary feed material sources has surged. Ausmelt Technology has proven to be well suited to the economic recovery of values, with twenty-two (22) Ausmelt furnaces processing lead and zinc bearing feed sources now in operation, under design or construction. This paper describes Ausmelt's progress in the fields of lead and zinc processing, and developments in new processing areas such as EAF dust processing and linking to innovative hydrometallurgical technology. Ausmelt has recently committed to the Whyalla Zinc project as the owner/operator of a facility for the treatment of zinc bearing secondary feeds. This project is due for start up in the first quarter of 2008.

"Occupational health programs and their role in improving the quality of working life in the mining industry are discussed. Attention is directed to some problems peculiar to the Canadian mining industry. Factors affecting program development are reviewed, as well as parameters affecting cost-benefit analyses.IntroductionThe quality of working life in the mining industry is a more important consideration than in many other industrial environments because of the very nature of the undertaking. It was a strange paradox of the 1960s that preventive maintenance programs for machinery and equipment were well accepted, whereas the concept of ""preventive people medicine"" was basically ignored. Fortunately, there seems to be a swing toward the development of occupational health programs in many sectors of the business community; however, there is a noticeable lack of consistency and uniformity for thought among the members of the mining industry. The blame for this lack o f progress in the occupational field cannot be entirely attributed to the industry, but must also rest with (for the most part) apathetic and inadequately trained physicians. This latter problem is slowly improving with the growing recognition that a well-planned and executed occupational health program may improve the quality of working life for mining employees and their families.There are a number of factors which relate to occupational health in mining, and its effect on working life quality. Included among these are:1. Community isolation.2. High accident risks.3. Occupational disease risks.4. Production demands and the state of the economy.5. Government regulatory requirements.6. Travel demands.These, and others, reflect on all levels of the mining industry. To examine how these factors can be moderated by an occupational health program, it is necessary to first review the rationale for such a program and some of the costs related to it."

Anode casting has been in operation for two years in Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting's Flin Flon smelter. The new plant allows all casting to be done on one shift and so achieves considerable labour savings. The equipment and operations are described. Some important features are as follows: very consistent anode weights by the use of the load-cell controlled casting ladle; excellent mould life ; very low reject rate; and trouble-free take -off tower. Some of the start-up problems are described and an outline is given of the main operator functions. Data on labour, propane and maintenance costs are presented.

"Natural deposits of sodium sulphate are the result of normal geological processes. They are world-wide in occurrence and are found in depressions in arid and semi-arid regions. Primarily, the sodium sulphate deposits of the prairies are post-glacial and differ from rock salt deposits, which originated from connate water (fossil sea-water). Sodium sulphate on the Canadian prairies occurs as brine or in beds of intermittent and/or permanent crystals. Most beds are contaminated with various amounts of silt, sand and decayed organic matter. Soluble impurities such as chlorides, carbonates and bicarbonates of sodium and sulphates of magnesium and calcium are leached out from the soil of the surrounding run-off area of the deposits.In this paper, the origin of sodium sulphate, and the physical and chemical aspects related to the development of the Ingebrigt Lake deposit are dealt with. The problems of garnering raw material, and of refining and de-hydration are discussed, with emphasis on the Ingebrigt Lake plant. The utilization of the ""Total Power Concept"" in a sodium sulphate plant is described. The principal uses of sodium sulphate are also discussed."

All resources are controlled and kept to the minimum. The various phases are properly planned and strategically determined. Optimum conditions are evaluated for the most economical and fastest way to complete a definite project. The method must be fully understood and implemented with positive data and continuous feedback to obtain the best results. This paper covers the various aspects of the Critical Path Method and mentions some of its applications in the mining and metallurgical fields. "Important stratabound lead-zinc deposits in southeastern B. C. occur in rocks that range in age from Proterozoic Helikian to Middle Cambrian. The Sullivan deposit, and similar but smaller deposits in the Sullivan area are the only important deposits that occur in clastic rocks with little carbonate content. The highly deformed and metamorphosed Shuswap deposits, of probable Hadrynian to Helikian age, are in mixed marble, calc-silicate gneiss and pelitic schist assemblages, rocks transitional between clastics and carbonates. Deposits in younger rocks, such as the Kootenay Arc deposits in the Lower Cambrian Badshot-Reeves Formation and the Monarch -Kicking Horse deposits in Middle Cambrian dolomite, are hosted by platformal carbonate rocks.An important regional control for the distribution of deposits appears to be a northeast-trending tectonic zone that crosses the Rocky Mountains and the Purcell Mountains just south of the Sullivan area, and projects southwestward toward the Salmo camp at the southern end of the Kootenay Arc. Pronounced northeast-trending gravity and magnetic anomalies, basic volcanism of Hadrynian age (the Irene volcanics west of Creston) and a preferred alignment of Mesozoic granitic rocks indicates that the zone coincides with deep crustal structures. Within the zone are dramatic and abrupt thickness and facies changes in Hadrynian Windermere rocks and lower Paleozoic rocks, and on the east side of the Rocky Mountain Trench in Helikian Purcell Supergroup rocks, indicating that block-faulting was active intermittently within the zone from Helikian through to lower Paleozoic time. Right-lateral and reverse movements occurred on northeast-trending tear faults within the zone in Mesozoic time."

SHERRITT GORDON Mines Limited annually produce 300,-000 pounds of pure cobalt by processing a nickel-cobalt-copper-iron sulphide ore which is mined at Lynn Lake, Manitoba. The ore (containing 0.04 per cent Co) is •concentrated to give a concentrate containing l 1-12 per cent nickel, about 2.0 per cent .copper, and 0.25-0.35 per cent cobalt, which is treated at the Refinery in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. The concentrate is leached in an ammoniacal solution of ammonium sulphate using compressed air as the oxidant. After filtration the leach solution contains, besides nickel and cobalt, copper ammines, sulpharnates and salts of various thionic acids.
