The cyclone, or centrifugal separator, ,is firmly established in industry as a low cost separator of solids from gases.While it will also separate fluids of different densities, and solids from liquids, its main use is to remove relatively fine dusts from gases whose pr~erties are generally not greatly different from those of air. This latter phase of operation is the one that will be dealt with here.The duty of such a cyclone separating system is to take in a supply of dusty gas and separate it into its components of dust and clean gas as perfectly as possible for the least consumption of pressure head. Any separation at all causes pressure loss and, in general, the greater the separation, the greater the pressure drop needed to effect it. The percentage of dust in suspension which is separated from the gas-dust mixture is commonly called the collection or separation efficiency. Overall or "true" efficiency must take pressure drop into account and may be considered as proportional to the ratio of the percentage of dust collected to the resultant pressure drop. For any cyclone It will vary with different dusts.Many commercial adaptions of the simple cyclone are made solely on the basis of pressure drop improvement, without taking into account the effect on separation efficiency, probably because the latter is so difficult to assess correctly. It appears unfortunate but true that the majority of such adaptions and patent gadgets fitted to cyclones which decrease pressure drop, do have an adverse effect on separation. In other' words, the true efficiency is seldom increased but often diminished.Without a knowledge of what actually goes on inside a cyclone, it is impossible fully to appreciate the real effect of a modification. The Newcrest Mining Limited Cadia East Panel Cave mines near Orange, New South Wales, Australia commenced production 1200 m below the surface in May 2014. Understanding the mine-wide impact caving had on excavation stability was a primary objective to ensure a safe working environment as production ramped up in the Panel Cave 1 operation and establishment activities were implemented in Panel Cave 2. The impact of cave interaction between Panel Cave 1 and Panel Cave 2 and establishing monitoring systems to assist mine planning and production as both caves joined is explained in this paper. Monitoring tools such as a microseismic system, open holes, HI-cells, extensometers, fibre optic sensing, cave markers, closure monitoring, underground observations and damage mapping were used to characterise the performance and position of the cave back. The data and observations collected were compared to predictions from numerical and empirical methods and used to calibrate the numerical models for forward prediction and to develop site empirical design tools. An epithermal gold-silver deposit is presently being developed at the Golden Cross Mine in the Waitekauri Valley, 8 km northwest of Waihi, New Zealand. Highest grade mineralisation underground is mainly confined to an elongate zone of strongly banded quartz veining on the hangingwall. Footwall veining is irregular, flatter lying, and of lower grade. Hydrothermal breccias in the ore zone may have economic grades where clasts of vein quartz are present. Jigsaw breccias, shingle breccias, and layered breccias with sedimentary type structures such as layering, crossbedding, and graded bedding have been identified proximal to, and within, quartz veins. Mineralisation in the open pit occurs in and adjacent to stockwork quartz veining.   Three alteration zones are recognised: a central silicic zone enclosing Au-Ag bearing quartz veins, an argillic zone above the stockwork zone and in the footwall of the underground ore zone, and a propylitic zone which is gradational with argillic zone. Intense shearing is confined to the less competent argillic zone.   Precious metal mineralogy consists of electrum (65% Au; 35% Ag) and argentiferous tetrahedrite, polybasite, pyrargyrite, argentite, and native silver. Pyrite is the dominant sulphide mineral. Marcasite, arsenopyrite, and rare chalcopyrite and sphalerite also occur. Oxidation ranges from a few metres in the argillic western stockwork zone to 100 m in fractured rock in the footwall of the stockwork.   The open pit contains a proved and probable reserve of 2.1 million tonne grading 3.5 g/t Au and 17 g/t Ag. The underground mine will produce 2.7 million tonne grading 7.8g/t Au and 27g/t Ag.

The modern Golden Cross mine entered the production phase in January 1992. The project is designed to produce over 100 000 oz/yr of gold and over 300 000 oz/yr of silver during a mine life of eight years. An open pit and an underground mine are operated producing around 850 000 t/yr of ore, to feed a conventional carbon-in-leach processing plant. Golden Cross is owned in joint venture by Coeur Gold New Zealand Limited (80%) and Viking Mining Company Limited (20 %).   Since the start of production several major aspects of the design have altered. The underground mine began as a mechanised cut and fill operation. The cut and fill stoping progresses in 3.3 m flatback lifts with maximum stoping width of 6 m. Where the ore zone is wider than 6 m a post pillar cut and fill method is used. In 1993 a new bench mining plan was introduced between the 270 and 260 levels. Flatbacking continued in the footwall drives in anticipation of variability of the ore width and orientation. The development of levels below the main service 200 level has indicated a possibility of bulk mining the ore block rather than flatbacks. This could lower mining costs but also introduce higher dilution rates. Development is in the advanced stages for trialing this method.

Successful development of coal seam gas (CSG) resources in low-rank coalfields such as the Powder River Basin has raised interest in CSG from low rank coal in New Zealand. Kenham Holdings Limited holds 12 Petroleum Exploration Permits (PEP) covering some of New ZealandÆs low-rank coal and lignite resources and has engaged CRL Energy Limited to assist in the systematic evaluation of the CSG potential of the permits. To date, exploration results from seven New Zealand coalfields reflect differences in coal type, rank, depositional environment and depth of burial between coalfields. Several of the explored coalfields are considered prospective for CSG. One of the most advanced Kenham exploration programmes is in the Hawkdun Coalfield, Central Otago.   The Hawkdun Coalfield contains a single, thick lignite seam with properties that are similar to the Powder River Basin. Preliminary results indicate the Hawkdun Coalfield is prospective for CSG with the potential to contain between 25 and 60 PJ of gas; enough to supply a 30MW power station for ten to 25 years. Further drilling is planned to investigate the economic viability of the Hawkdun Coalfield. The in situ permeability of the lignite, the amount and availability of free gas, gas saturation at depth and market opportunities will determine its economic viability. If initial pumping and production results in the planned exploration programme are promising, the Hawkdun Coalfield will be further developed with additional production drillholes to form a trial production pod.

A discussion on simulation tools to aid the development of robotics platforms is presented. The focus of the work is towards mining robotics platforms where operations are typically in unstructured, unpredictable environments and a high degree of dependability in their operations is required. It is argued that a test-based development approach leads to more robust solutions and faster development cycles than traditional single-track field-only development and that the key enabling technology for this development paradigm is the judicious use of simulation tools. The future direction of simulation for use in online applications such as active planning and as a means to assist tele-operation in high latency communication applications is also brief y considered together with the requirements for a useful simulation environment in terms of the simulator architecture. Finally, a case study is presented on the application of the discussed methodologies to an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) for earth-moving tasks, which is being developed in an accelerated time frame with a transient development team.

The Hyde Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ) is an extensive low angle semibrittle mineralised structure in the Otago Schist Belt, New Zealand. The shear zone is located on the lower limb of a late metamorphic recumbent fold. Structural observations suggests that the shear zone initiated as a high strain mylonite zone and transgressed the ductile/brittle boundary (D4) later in its development. A surge zone at Round Hill is bounded to the south by a NE-SW striking lateral ramp which displaces the hanging wall shear (HWS) by 50 m. Oblique strike slip displacement during surge zone propagation created space for deposition of the sheeted vein complex or stockwork. Quartz recrystallisation in stockwork veins suggests that the veins were deformed in a ductile manner and implies that surge zone propagation may have occurred during late D3 deformation. A macroantiform was produced during D3/D4 shortening below the HWS. Over tightening of the antiform hinge created SW and NE-dipping ramp thrusts. Continued strike slip displacement along the lateral ramp rotated the antiform and associated ramps into a south plunging drag fold. Post-mineralisation (D5) structures include NE-dipping nonna! faults below the HWS and SW-dipping low angle imbricate thrusts above the HWS. The development of these structures was kinematically compatible with normal movement on the HMSZ and is related to mid Cretaceous break up of Gondwanaland in the SW Pacific.

Murrin Murrin Operations have not had a successful beginning. Numerous reliability and operability issues, many of which are the result of design decisions, have been addressed through mechanical and operational changes and the CCD circuit is no exception. Four design aspects of the CCD circuit that have caused and continue to cause operational problems are: the inclusion of solution neutralisation gypsum in the CCD circuit feed which was designed solely for HPAL residue without proper investigation of its impact on the achievable underflow density and resulting wash efficiency; the decision to construct the thickener base from thickened solids; the lack of redundancy in the overflow, underflow and tailings pipe work; and the lack of thickener operational flexibility in the central rake-lift and feedwell dilution system. In November 2002, the lack of operational flexibility in the rake-lift and the feedwell dilution system was improved through mechanical modification as follows:CCD1 rake mechanism was modified to allow central vertical lift of 600 mm; and CCD1 changed to forced dilution using the Outokumpu TurbodilRântechnology by replacing the E-DucânRtechnology of Eimco. The installation and the results of the CCD1 rake-lift mechanism and feedwell dilution system changes are discussed in this paper.

It has been fairly firmly established (Fisher, N. H., 1945) that the fineness of the gold in any ore deposit varies with the depth from the surface at which the deposit was formed, and, as a corollary to this, that it is dependent upon the temperature and pressure at the time of deposition. This relationship is such that, under certain conditions, the gold fineness, taken into consideration with other recognised criteria, furnishes a very sensitive and reliable guide to the relative temperature of ore formation, at least within the epithermal and the upper part of the mesothermal range.Definition of Fineness.The fineness of gold is calculated in parts per thousand and refers to the proportion of gold present in the naturally occurring metal in the lode, which is actually a gold-silver alloy, containing usually about 10 parts per thousand of base metal and up to 500 parts perthousand of silver. A clear distinction should be made between fineness and gold-silver ratio. The latter refers to the total gold and silver in the lode as determined by assay and is usually expressed as the ratio Au:Ag. Only in deposits where other silver-bearingminerals are entirely absent, which occurs comparatively rarely, can the gold-silver ratio be used as a measure of gold fineness and, in many cases, the two have no relationship. For instance, in the Edie Creek area in New Guinea, the lodes formed under shallow epithermal conditions all carry gold 500 to 550 fine, although the gold-silver ratio ranges from 1:100 to 1:1, in places in adjacent lodes.Determination of Gold Fineness.The fineness of lode gold can be determined only after it has been separated from all other minerals. Amalgamation recovers gold fairly cleanly - unless native silver is present - and the fineness of amalgam bullion is generally a reliable indication of the correct fineness of the gold. If the use of plates is involved, the bullion may be adulterated, but the effect of any copper, or other metal, that may have been introduced can be cancelled by assuming that the gold and silver shouJrl add up to about 990 fine, or by ignoring the base metal content altogether, which varies little in naturally-occurring gold, and in calculating for comparison purposes all fineness figures to the basis Au + Ag = 1,000.The composition of bullion obtained from cyanidation is generally intermediate between the true gold fineness and the total gold-silver proportion as determined by assay of mine or mill-head samples of Cyanide solution dissolves other silver-bearing minerals and the fineness of the resulting bullion is thereby lowered. Consequently, the fineness of cyanide bullion rarely corresponds to the true gold fineness and is useless for diagnostic purposes, although it is a common fallacy to refer to the fineness of cyanide bullion as the fineness of the gold.

We have considered the following characteristics of the crust and upper mantle of the Pacific Belt: seismic wave velocity anomalies, mechanical stress and shear deformation rate fields, heat flow and the pattern of metallogenic provinces of the Belt. It has been noted that there exist certain .regularities in distribution of the above mentioned geophysical characteristics and metallogenic zones within the Belt, displayed by prevalence of the lithophile elements in the Asia-Australian part of the Belt, and of the chalcophile ones within the American part.

The southern portion of the Swan Coastal Plain, a geomorphological element formed since late Tertiary times, contains commercially exploitable accumulations of ilmenite, zircon, rutile and monazite associated with a series of raised shorelines. The location of the deposits is controlled by a locally outcropping Archaen granite/ granulite complex and a sea current pattern determined by local geography and a prevailing wind direction. A progression from medium to high titanium ilmenite is evident parallelled by progressive leucoxenisation as the age of the deposits increases. Variations in trace element content accompany this process. Circulating groundwater has caused vertical mineralogical variations within individual deposits and by precipitation of iron has formed layers of hardpan.The Geographe Bay deposits are of important economic significance.INTRODUCTIONObservations made during the course of a brief survey of the southern portion of the Swan Coastal Plain provide an outline of the geology and mineralogy of the mineral sand deposits of the area. This preliminary study will require considerable modification in the light of more detailed work in the future.REGIONAL GEOLOGYThe Geographe Bay area is situated in the south-west corner of Western Australia between longitudes 115° O'W. and 116° O'W. and latitudes 33° 15'S. and 33° 45'S.The general geology of the area is shown in Fig. 1 where the control of the physiography exercised by the Cape Leeuwin-Cape Naturaliste basement ridge is readily apparent. Between this ridge and the Precambrian east of the Darling fault lies the southern part of the Perth basin which contains outcropping Jurassic to Recent sediments and lavas (McWhae, et al., 1958).The Leeuwin-Naturaliste ridge is the exposed portion of L Assistant Production Managcr. Geological information is essential for a diversity of public and other purposes, including land use planning, hazard mitigation, and the exploration and sustainable use of natural resources. This is especially important in New Zealand, where the complexity of the geology is due to its position on an active plate boundary - the ultimate cause of earthquakes, mountain building, subsidence and volcanic activity. The geological setting also controls the origin and distribution of New Zealand's varied mineral and energy resources. Providing information about the origin, quality and quantity of mineral resources has long been seen as a key function of national geological organisations such as the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences. Such information is essential for wise land-use decisions under the Resource Management Act. One of the major goals of the Institute is to quickly and effectively disseminate research results to interested users. The most effective and internationally accepted method of presenting geological data is by means of geological maps, which show the distribution of rock types and structural features at the surface. Most countries have ongoing gelogical mapping programmes, and in recent years the need for up-to-date, reliable information has led to a trend to accelerate basic geological mapping (eg US National Geological Mapping Act 1992; Australian National Mapping Accord 1990; Plan 2000 in the UK). Over the last 25 years, the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences and its predecessors (NZ Geological Survey and DSIR Geology and Geophysics) have concentrated on detailed mapping of priority areas selected on the basis of economic and scientific interest. This has included remapping of Nelson-West Coast and Coromandel, regions with high mineral potential, for which 1:63 360 or 1:50 000 maps have been prepared.

Northern Iron Ltd (NIL) is an Australian listed company that recently brought the historic Sydvaranger open pit Magnetite Mine (the Project) in Northern Norway successfully back into production. NIL made the decision to operate the Project on an owner mining basis, due to limited large scale mining expertise amongst Norwegian mining contractors, a long mine life, a limited range in planned mining rate and to minimise costs. As a new mine operator in a country where labour practices are strictly regulated, there was the desire to reduce the risk associated employing and managing skilled personnel. This was achieved by coupling the purchase of the required mining equipment from the original equipment manufacturer's (OEM) regional dealers with OEM supported Maintenance and Repair Contracts (MARC). This paper examines the process that was followed to implement an owner mining operation in a short time frame; approximately 12 months from the initial requests for quotation to actual delivery of mining equipment to site, and some of the challenges faced. By following a formal and well-tested process, not only was the implementation achieved in the set time frame, but significant value was added through the cost savings achieved in the equipment purchase price and MARC rates that were negotiated through this process.

The Wolgan Seam of the Upper Permian IlIawarra Coal Measures of the Western Coalfield of New South Wales consists of high volatile, low sulphur, medium hard coking coal with high fluidity. This seam, 1·8-2·4m thick, in the Wolgan area, dips gently at 1°_20 ENE and lies at 160-440m below the deeply dissected surface of the western margin of the Blue Mountains plateau.A detailed study of the deposit has revealed that the Wolgan Seam consists of four main coal plies separated by three distinct stone bands. Each of these subunits is lenticular and displays individual physical, chemical and mineralogical characteristics which exhibit distinct spatial distribution patterns across the area. Most noticeable is the presence of long linear ESE-trending zones of low ash - high volatiles - high fixed carbon - high fluidity which delineate the major distributary pattern within the deltaic environment of coal formation.This seam contains some of the highest fluidity coal in the world.The Wolgan area, close to the western margin of the Sydney Basin, is characterized by:I. a regional, closely spaced, homogenous joint fracture pattern dominated by an orthogonal pair set trending 3400 and 0700, to which the face- and butt-cleat directions respectively of the Wolgan Seam are sub-parallel, and2. a more widely spaced, heterogenous, cross-cutting pattern of regional structural fractures. Zones of bad roof conditions are probably associated with these lineaments which are subvertical and trend in three majordirections, viz., 005°,035° and 115°.

The optimisation of a mining operation requires precise ore grade control, metallurgical accounting, and laboratory sampling protocols, which are implemented by using accurate and flawless sampling systems. Good sampling practices, and sampling technologies in these fields have been historically poor and too many existing sampling systems available on the market are flawed in many ways. This is mainly the result of a poor understanding of the Sampling Theory, and the natural result of international standards on sampling that fail to present the Sampling Theory in a logical way, that still promote non-probabilistic sampling, and that fail to address the important details that make a correct sampling system. Many standards barely mention the Sampling Theory in appendices when it should be clearly the main body of a reliable standard on sampling. As a result, many standards show only little expertise in the Sampling Theory. Conventional statistics should only be a scientific tool for the Sampling Theory to reach its height, which has always been well understood by its creators. Conventional statistics can indeed be addressed in appendices of standards in sampling, but not the other way around. Until the Sampling Theory is recognised as the main body of a standard on sampling, incorrect sampling technologies will plague the market, and make it impossible for mining operations to optimise their mining and metallurgical processes. This paper makes a short list of correct new sampling technologies that have been created with respect to the principles taught in the Sampling Theory. Also, suggestions are presented to create better international standards on sampling, which would provide a stronger incentive for manufacturers to build correct sampling systems, and for engineering firms to install only sampling systems that respect the rules of sampling correctness listed in the Sampling Theory.

"Work in CSIRO with several Australian ores has shown that?by heating a high-phosphorus goethitic iron ore and then leaching with caustic or acid, the phosphorus levels in the ore can be lowered to a commercially acceptable value of around 0.08 weight per cent phosphorus (P). With increasing heating temperatures up to 1300¦C, the extent of phosphorus removal increased. This is considered to be associated with mineralogical changes in the iron oxide phases in the ore during the heating.Little phosphorus was removed from four high-phosphorus goethitic iron ores containing 0.12 - 0.16 weight per cent P in leaches with boiling water. However, leaches with sulfuric acid removed ten to 20 weight per cent of the phosphorus and leaching with sodium hydroxide removed even more phosphorus to produce leach products containing between 0.08 and 0.12 weight per cent P from three of the ores.After heating at 300¦C, leaches at a low pulp density of 0.5 weight per cent solids with 1 - 5 M NaOH and 0.1 - 1 M H2SO4 gave leach products with 0.06 - 0.09 weight per cent P. The lixiviant concentration required and extent of phosphorus removal depended on the ore. At a higher pulp density of 25 weight per cent solids, leach residues with between 0.07 - 0.14 weight per cent P were obtained.More phosphorus was removed from ores heated at 900¦C. Leaches at both the low and high pulp densities, with 1 - 5 M NaOH and 0.1 - 1 M H2SO4, gave leach products with 0.05 - 0.09 weight per cent P. However, the lowest phosphorus levels were obtained after heating the ores at 1200 or 1300¦C and leaching with 1 M NaOH or 0.1 M H2SO4. Leach residues with 0.02 - 0.06 weight per cent P were obtained, even from leaches at the higher pulp density of 25 weight per cent solids. Leaching tests on heated samples under heap leaching conditions at ambient temperatures have shown that phosphorus levels can be reduced to similar levels to that achieved in an agitation leach within ten days.CITATION:Fisher-White, M J, Lovel, R R, Sparrow, G J and Washington, B M, 2013. The alluvial gold industry of New Zealand is based on the placer deposits in Otago and on the West Coast. Production from these since discovery in the 1850s has been an estimated 480 t (15 Moz) of gold. Annual output has expanded continuously since 1980 and is expected to be over 2 t of gold for 1989. Following a historical review, the characteristics of typical operations, which use hydraulic excavators and mobile trommel units are discussed. Descriptions are then given of alluvial activities in Otago and on the West Coast.

ON mineral lease 38 of the Sulphide Corporation Limited, Broken Hill, a shaft was sunk in the early days Ior prospecting purposes and at the present time it is accessible as far as the 1000-ft. level where a connexion exists with the main workings of the Corporation's Central Mine, mineral lease 9. About the year 1895· a crosscut was driven east from this shaft at the 1330-ft. level cutting the Central Ore-body in mineral lease 9 and the shaft is supposed to extend a further depth of 25 ft; but no records of any of this work are in existence, the whole of the evidence being based on hearsay and memory:Fig. 1 shows the position of the Extended shaft in relation to the main workings. The shaft filled with water to the 1000-ft. level where it overflowed through the crosscut to the main shaft and was pumped to the surface, but when the South drive on the 1300-ft. level was pushed to the southern boundary, it was deemed advisable for safety, to tap the water at this level and so relieve the...

Mining at Waihi on the Martha Hill commenced in 1878 and between 1892 and 1953 produced 35 million ounces of bullion from some 13.5 million short tons of ore from 40 named quartz reefs. The general geology of the ore is recorded in detail with differing interpretations by Bell and Fraser (1912) and Morgan (1924). The reefs and stringers have formed by fissure filling and replacement in mainly quartz andesite dacite flows within the Waihi 'Graben'. The host rocks are extensively propylitised with intense alteration forming zones of kaolin adjacent to the main reefs.
