New Developments in Spirals and Spiral Plant Operations Records indicate that spiral separators have been utilised in mineral separation for over 100 years. The Spiral's predecessor, the sluice, has been in use for centuries in different forms and a spiral can be thought of as a sluice wound around a column. The spiral separator is distinguished from the straight sluice, and other flowing film separators, in uniquely introducing centrifugal motion. The elegance of the spiral concept was embraced due to significantly improved separation efficiencies, ease of operation and tolerance of variation in feed conditions. Advances in spiral technology have improved the metallurgical performance, modernised the materials of construction, increased unit capacities and simplified operation. These advances have ensured that spirals continue to play a major industry role amidst other advancing and competing technologies. Recent developments in spiral and spiral plant technology include: the launch of the VHG spiral model, specifically aimed at feeds with very high levels of high-density mineral particles; the introduction of a high capacity wash water spiral model; and innovations in feed stabilisation and control. Details of these developments are presented together with the resultant operational benefits including feed stabilisation, product control and improved metallurgical performances.

The use of column flotation cells for recovery of phosphate is becoming more common practice in certain parts of the world (Brazil, Russia) where igneous phosphate ores are processed. Igneous phosphates are generally finer grained (< 200µm) than some of the traditional sedimentary phosphates (<400µm). Australian phosphate from the Georgina basin is sedimentary, but has a much finer grain size (typically < 106µm) than similar deposits in North Africa and the USA.In 2013, Arianne Phosphate completed a bankable feasibility study for the development of their igneous phosphate deposit at the Lac a Paul site in Quebec. Initially, lab test work and bench scale piloting indicated that using traditional mechanical flotation would be able to produce adequate concentrate grade and an economic level of recovery, but would necessitate the installation of a complex and operationally challenging flotation circuit. Later pilot plant testing using column cells resulted in a significant reduction in process complexity and facilitated the processing of the -20µm ore fraction which resulted in a 10% increase in P2O5 recovery and a 5% increase in concentrate grade %P2O5.Flotation column testing achieved a concentrate grade of 38.6% P2O5 at a P2O5 recovery of 90%. Using a mechanical flotation cell circuit, the concentrate grade was 36.4% P2O5 with a P2O5 recovery of only 78.8%. A noticeable feature of the testing was the simplicity of the column flotation circuit configuration (Rougher + 2 stages of cleaning + Cleaner Scavenger) compared to the mechanical flotation cell circuit (Rougher + Scavenger + 3 stages of cleaning).The financial benefit for this case study was estimated using a sales price of US$ 195/t FOB for a 38.6% P2O5 product, and an assumed cost of production of US$ 95/t, the netback price is calculated at US$100/t. For a daily milling rate of 55,000t/d, the improved flotation performance provides additional concentrate production of 1,203t/d. Using the netback price calculated above, this calculates to additional gross profit of US$ 120,260/d.Annualised, this equals US$ 40.7 million in additional revenue for a similar or reduced CAPEX.The use of column flotation on fine grained phosphate ore types often requires fine grinding and desliming to liberate the phosphate value, such as the Australian sedimentary phosphate ores. The Taupo Volcanic Zone inNew Zealand and the Philippine Mobile Belt in the Philippines are characterized by active subduction, active volcanism and high seismicity. The main factors affecting characteristics of geothermal systems in both countries are: tectonic setting, source magmas, maturity of the systems, and depth to the degassing magma body. Within New Zealand, geothermal systems are grouped into arc- and rift-type. Fluids in arc-type systems contain high amounts of volatiles (<20%), with high CO2/Cl, CO2/He, and N2/Ar ratios. Mantle-type volatiles predominate in rift-type systems. Philippine geothermal systems are largely arc-type, the topography is rugged, leading to the separation of water and vapour upflows, as opposed to the overlap found in New Zealand. The relatively shallow depths of degassing magma bodies in the Philippines results in steeper geochemical gradients, leading to higher proportions of arc-type magmatic water (>40%) and higher Cl contents (3000 - 10 000 mg/kg), Maximum temperatures are also higher, reaching up to >400¦C. Arc-type alteration assemblages in New Zealand and the Philippines are similar. Because Philippine geothermal systems are less mature, have higher temperatures and steeper geochemical gradients than New Zealand ones, advanced argillization is more widespread occurring down to depths of 2000 m. Mineral phases are more varied due to the active input of magmatic waters and the formation of vapor conditions at depth, forming P04-, B-, Li-, Ce-, F-, and Cl-bearing minerals at high temperatures. In the Philippines, high temperature magmatic-hydrothermal to contact metamorphic assemblages containing biotite, amphiboles and pyroxenes are relatively common, but rare in New Zealand.

In 2005, Solid Energy New Zealand Limited obtained non-notified consent for the disposal of 1Mt of coal ash at the Rotowaro minesite, forming part of a coal supply agreement with the Huntly Power Station. A non-notified resource consent was sought which necessitated that environmental effects be shown to be æless than minorÆ, and resulted from robust science and a pragmatic approach to design. As part of the assessment of environmental effects, there was a need to understand the effects of boron concentrations on aquatic organisms (ie algae, plankton, plants and invertebrates) in the receiving environment. Boron is a naturally occurring element that is found in the form of borates in the oceans, sedimentary rocks, coal, shale, and in some soils but Waikato coals and ashes have particularly high boron content. Boron is an essential micronutrient for higher plants with interspecies differences in the levels required for optimum growth. As aspects of the ANZECC (2000) derived boron limits are based on toxicity of aquatic algae and plants to boron it was important to assess these components in the environment. The effects on the receiving environment of the Awaroa Stream were assessed using predicted water chemistry and comparing actual boron concentrations in a comprehensive and multifaceted reference-condition approach of catchment ecological indicators. In addition a toxicological-based assessment of boron and a re-calculation of the ANZECC trigger levels were undertaken and applied to the ecological indicators. The reference-condition approach revealed that habitat and overall water quality attributes at and between sites was more influential in determining the aquatic biotic communities than boron concentrations alone. There was no evidence of any gradient of changes in ecological indicators with changing boron concentrations, nor evidence of any residual effect of high historic boron concentrations on the aquatic biota.

Pyrite Bioleaching and Slag Neutralisation - Two Treatments in a Single Process for Recovering Valuable Metals from Both Materials Very often the production of copper sulfide concentrate yields pyrite concentrate as a by-product. This is the case at the Knre mine in northern Turkey. This kind of concentrate may contain low grades of valuable non-ferrous metals. Bioleaching of such pyrite concentrates is a processing technique to solubilise metals like copper, zinc or cobalt in a sulfuric acid pregnant solution. The pyrometallurgical processing of copper sulfide concentrate produces slag that still contains valuable metals in varying concentrations. Slag is used in many ways: as aggregates, ballast, pavement material, in cement production and glass making. Due to its relatively alkaline nature, it can also be used to neutralise acidic solutions. A preliminary study of the bioleaching of the pyrite concentrate (Co 0.28 per cent, Cu 0.56 per cent and sulfur as sulfide 42.6 per cent) produced at Knre has been undertaken with the assessment of the neutralisation of the acidic bioleach solution by using old slag (Co 0.29 per cent, Cu 1.70 per cent and sulfur as sulfide 0.89 per cent) stockpiled on the site. The main conclusions of the study were as follows: Knre pyrite was amenable to bioleaching at 40¦C. Cobalt solubilisation directly related to pyrite degradation reached a maximum yield above 90 per cent. Final copper recovery was limited to approximately 66 per cent not directly related to bacterial growth and pyrite oxidation. Slag could be used as a substitute for limestone as a neutralising agent in the bioleaching tanks. Cobalt and copper could be recovered from pyrite concentrate and slag simultaneously from both materials. A pre-feasibility study is underway to carry out a preliminary cost estimate of an installation for cobalt and copper production from these two materials processed in a single operation.

The objective of this paper is to examine some modern forms of auxiliary ventilation fabric ducting with streamline design fittings and the efficiency of construction practices. The most dynamic form of auxiliary ventilation is a moveable fan and ducting, which is easy to install and uses light weight fabric. The porous nature of some ducting construction results in leakage and loss of efficiency. Flexible fabric ducting is primarily associated with metalliferous mining and industrial material quarrying. Some applications are found in coal in stone/rock development and with use of dust scrubbers.Forcing auxiliary ventilation systems employing circular fabric ducting have been examined. Leakage of air from ducting is affected by ducting material and construction methodology (such as welded or sewn), quality of installation, number of joints, total length, pressure differences between the inside and outside and diameter. The best ducting system with welded construction can have up to four times less leakage as compared with some systems with sewn construction. It is also evident that the sewn type ducting will deliver less air to working faces and require more fan power, hence higher operating costs to run when connected to the same fan.A case study has also been undertaken to compare predicted operating costs of auxiliary ventilation systems connecting various types of ventilation duct fittings. The study also assesses the technical importance of streamline design with low aerodynamic resistance to reduce the shock losses of the duct fittings. It was found that the system connected with streamline designed fittings is able to provide some power cost savings and deliver more air compared with the system fitted with conventional fitting pieces.Using a ventilation ducting system with a lower leakage and frictional characteristic represents a sound solution to new challenges faced by the industry for increasing demand for better quantities and quality of air delivered to working faces; this is due to higher production schedules and stricter mine health and safety regulations within the Australian mining industry.CITATION:Wu, H W and Gillies, A D S, 2017. Models of the size specific processes of particle collision, attachment and detachment have been combined in a form suitable for analysis of a full-scale flotation plant. The model is based on a first principal approach to particle collection by bubbles. Parameters considered include particle size, bubble size, particle contact angle, energy dissipation, entrainment and froth recovery. Using data structures configured within an Excel spreadsheet using æLimn: The Flowsheet ProcessorÆ, the model has been incorporated into a description of the individual cells within a simple roughing and cleaning flotation circuit. Simulated feeds of varying particle size distribution, feed tonnage and varying mineral hydrophobicity representing different mineral phases are presented to the model to produce predicted final concentrate grades and recoveries. Practical techniques for measuring many of the parameters included in the model are now becoming readily available. However, relating the terms included for contact angle, energy dissipation, entrainment (ie water recovery) and froth recovery to measurable parameters in operating plants remain as continuing challenges for research.

Mine rehabilitation is a sustainability issue that has been revisited ad infinitum; however, the persistent lack of demonstrated on-the-ground performance and an increasingly intractable rehabilitation liability in Queensland continue to erode the credibility of the mining industry and regulatory bodies. For at least ten years the need to change the current, process-based approach to rehabilitation to an outcomes-based approach has been apparent. The ISO 14001 series temporarily diverted attention from this important point, however it would appear the limitations of an ISO 14001 approach are now more widely accepted. It is proposed that a successful outcomes-based approach cannot be achieved without meaningful community engagement. The apparently intractable nature of the rehabilitation issue will continue to generate conflict and criticism unless all stakeholders are encouraged to participate in the process of developing robust and practical outcomes for rehabilitation. Sharing the responsibility will ensure the best possible outcome. It is important to recognise the valuable resources inherent in community groups, many of whose committed volunteers have considerable expertise in relevant areas. Community groups should not be seen as adversaries but as allies in the process of solving problems that affect the wider community. Several projects that can be seen as test cases for the engagement of stakeholders exist, and in this paper the process of achieving multiple stakeholder engagement in the context of Environmentally Sustainable Development is discussed.

Enhance Fine Particle Flotation by Hydrodynamic Cavitation Difficulties in fine particle flotation are well documented. Microbubble flotation has been found to greatly improve the recovery of fine particles and in situ gas nucleation by hydrodynamic cavitation incorporated in the design of modern flotation machines has shown great performance in fine particle flotation and potentially in coarse particle flotation. In this presentation, we will provide an overview on gas nucleation by hydrodynamic cavitation and its role in fine particle flotation with focus on the progress made in our research laboratory. Hydrodynamic cavitation was achieved and the critical role of dissolved gases in the liquid was elucidated by visualisation in a high intensity agitation cell. The in situ gas nucleation on fine particles by hydrodynamic cavitation was identified by zeta potential distribution measurement in model systems. Gas nucleation by hydrodynamic cativation was found to effectively aggregate hydrophobised fine particles thereby leading to enhanced flotation kinetics. This is an abstract only. Development of Grindability Tests Based on Direct Measurement of Energy Nowadays, for the characterisation of the grindability different grindability indices - Bond-work index (Wi), Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) or Zeisel specific grindability (Wt) - are used. Generally, the grindability tests are carried out under relatively simplified circumstances, in a special dry batch mill with defined feed size material until prescribed conditions are reached at room temperature. However, in the fine- and ultra fine grinding, which is a frequent task (fly ash, tailings, alumina, etc), a fine material (<50 - 200 ¦m) is usually ground down to the few micrometers. The conventional grindability testing methods and apparatuses (Bond-, Hardgrove-, Zeisel-processes) for their determination, although, are not suitable directly to measure the grindability of such fine materials, since the maximal particle size of the feed material (0.5 - 3 mm) to be tested is much higher. One of the important goals of the research carried out in our Institute was to develop the novel grindability testing methods, which are suitable for the fine and ultra fine grinding, and additionally provide the possibility for the fast determination of the grindability. In order to realise the above aim the conventional Bond- and Hardgrove- mills were modified in order to directly measure the grinding work. In particular, the Hardgrove-mill was equipped with a simple torque-meter (load cell). The Bond-mill was rigged with a digital electric power measurer. The systematic experiments were carried out parallel in both mills using the conventional and the developed methods. Finally the results of both were compared. The measuring results have proved that the Bond-work index can be determined based on the developed methods. The new grindability testing methods were applied successfully in several industrial research tasks for the determination of the specific grinding energy and the Bond-work index. These methods can be also used in the industrial practice for the control of the grinding process.

Over the years, predictive techniques for Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) and the natural processes affecting acid generation have received considerable attention. Less emphasis has been placed on the sampling strategy and the integration of testwork results with the geological data base. The sampling strategy employed and the development of a geological model to determine the spatial distribution and volume of acid producing material are often crucial for developing cost-effective containment and mitigation measures. The geological model provides a link between the occurrence, timing, destination and placement of mined waste rock. Careful and accurate interrogation of a comprehensive geological database provides this linkage. The AMD testwork program at Cadia in NSW has been designed to identify the temporal selective handling requirements that will be required during operation. Sampling involved collection of representative combinations of all waste rock types identified within an extensive geological database. These samples were subjected to static, kinetic and accelerated weathering predictive tests. Preliminary results have been used to construct a waste block model for the deposit that identifies the quantity and distribution of acid producing material. Integration of the block model with the mine scheduling determines when the material will be mined.

Operational effectiveness is fundamental to any operation, becoming highly topical in those experiencing less than optimal output from their fleets. It is all encompassing aiming to identify those factors that could be improved within production and suggesting solutions in order to optimise the existing fleet and obtain the greatest capital return on expenditure.Argyle Diamond Mine (ADM) is a large open cut diamond mine located in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia, approximately 180 km south of Kununurra. It is owned and operated by Rio Tinto on a two week on/two week off roster fly-in/fly-out from Perth or drive in/drive out from Kununurra. Through benchmarking the operation between January and June 2002, a study was undertaken allowing identification of areas falling below target. Following this, analysis of annualised hours and production downtimes were undertaken to quantify the potential gains of improvements in these areas. Strategies were then identified as stated in the 2002 mine plan, in operational effectiveness meetings, and by staff members. This project aimed to maximise direct working hours through determination of the main issues hindering performance. External and internal factors were considered and a continuous improvement program (CIP) was developed. The CIP aimed at internal site-based improvement teams to identify and implement solutions for improvement on a day-to-day basis.

Computation is believed to be a powerful tool in scaling-up chemical processes and in designing materials, however, is being challenged by low predictability and limited scalability. This presentation will discuss the promising future of multi-scale computation in solving these two problems to realise the real-time simulation of industrial processes. Multi-scale structures are a common nature of most chemical systems and the meso-scale phenomena are believed to be the road blocks not only in improving the predictability of physical modeling but also in extending the scalability of computation. Focusing on the meso-scale phenomena, a series of research has been carried out at the Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, for the past three decades. Starting with a simple idea of modeling the meso-scale clusters in gas-solid two phase flows, the so-called EMMS (Energy-Minimisation Multi-Scale) model was established. In verifying the stability condition of the model, the pseudo-particle approach was proposed to explore the micro-mechanisms in particle-fluid systems, and the strategy of the EMMS model was extended to other six different multi-phase systems, resulting in a unified conceptual formulation of multi-phase complex systems expressed by a multi-objective variational problem. In applying this model to different multi-phase systems and to industrial problems, it was recognised that the EMMS model defined a new paradigm of multi-scale computation by realising the structural similarity between software, hardware and the problems to be computed. This paradigm of computation was implemented on a multi-scale supercomputer with a capacity of 1.0 petaflops by integrating CPUs and GPUs (Graphic Processing Units), showing high efficiency and low cost. Running the EMMS model on this computer, the simulation of hydrodynamics of multi-phase systems can be speeded up very much, indicating a promising future of virtual reality of process engineering. The presentation will review this series of work, introduce successful applications in industries, and will be concluded by emphasising the critical importance of the meso-scale phenomena as the bridge between macro-dominants and micro-mechanisms. Constraints on the mineral industry are best treated as issues that have to be understood and managed in partnership rather than in conflict with communities. TheZapopan development at Mt Todd in Australia and the Martha Hill development at Waihi in New Zealand are but two of many recent successful examples at the local level.   However, at the national level, the issues are more complex and more difficult to resolve because the most influential stakeholders are now the urban electorates and governments defer to their perceptions when making decisions and policy. In the developed countries, government policies for the development of mineral resources have been progressively eroded since the early 1970s. At the same time policies for the environment and for native land rights have generally been carried out in a way that has reduced access to minerals and increased the cost and risks for prospectors and developers (Hancock, 1995). Since the end of the Cold War, the lesser developed countries (LDCs) have introduced policies to attract investment in their mineral resources that remained undeveloped under previous unstable or hostile regimes. The increased attraction of these LDCs and the decreased attraction of the developed countries has caused many Australian and North American companies to outlay increasing proportions of their budgets and capital investment in the LDCs.   Significantly, LDC policies for environment protection do not discourage exploration and mine development, Surveys of the relative appeal of the LDCs and the traditional mining countries of the developed world, rate Chile, Argentina and Indonesia ahead of Australia and Canada in terms of risk, delays and ease of doing business (Australian Mining Monthly, February 1994).

The worldwide association of low-sulfidation epithermal gold mineralisation, bimodal rhyolitic-basaltic volcanism and rifting is confirmed in New Zealand. In the currently productive Coromandel epithermal-gold province reported Ar-Ar dating of adularia from low sulfidation deposits falls into two groups at 6 and 7 Ma. Bimodal rhyolitic-basaltic volcanism has been reported to be K-Ar dated at 9 to 7 Ma and 6 to 5.5 Ma. Epithermal gold mineralisation in Northland is spatially associated with bimodal basaltic-rhyolitic volcanism, with rifting cogenetic with that in the CVZ. The Taupo Volcanic zone (TVZ) is sufficiently young that the presence of a segmented rift with recent bimodal rhyolitic-basaltic volcanism can be genetically associated with epithermal gold mineralisation, which occurs as both fossil occurrences and in active geothermal fields. This reinforces the known potential prospectiveness of the Coromandel area and increases that of Northland and the Taupo Volcanic Zone.
