An assessment of U.S. western hardrock miners? noise exposures was conducted as part of a multi-year National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) survey of noise exposures in each sector of the mining industry. Noise from selected mining equipment and operator noise exposures were measured, analyzed and tabulated for dissemination to the participating sites and are being used to direct NIOSH research and interventions to address the greatest noise hazards. Eighty-two noise dosimeter measurements were obtained, along with time-motion studies as the miners operated hardrock mining machines. Of the operators, 96% had daily noise doses that exceeded the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration?s (MSHA) permissible exposure level. The average gold miner dosages while operating the following equipment were: haul trucks - 261%, load-haul-dumps (LHDs) - 235%, single boom drills - 221%, bolters - 214% and dual boom drills - 163%. The worst exposure level was a silver miner with a daily dose of 873%. Time-motion data showed that this miner?s exposure accumulated most rapidly while operating a jackleg drill. These results will be used to help prioritize noise control development by NIOSH and other partners.

This is an update of an original dissertation on this topic by Lavallee, McIvor and Stolovitch (1992). A step-by-step, technical procedure used to measure and improve the performance of plant grinding circuits was adapted into a training program. ?Systematic Design of Instruction? was applied to: ? Determine if training was a suitable way to deliver this new technology; ? Define the technical content of the program; ? Select program specifications based on learner and context characteristics; ? Design, create and test prototypes of the training modules; and, ? Establish a process for plant implementation. The training program covers numerous skills that are extremely valuable for plant personnel, not only in the grinding area, but also for many other parts of the plant. This paper describes how new skills are brought into the workplace through designed instruction can be an effective alternative to hiring during severe skilled labor shortages.

The link between artificial ground freezing and the mining industry stretches back more than 140 years, and across an ocean. Patented by the German scientist F.H. Poetsch in 1863, the technique is reported to have first been used circa 1862 in the coal mining valleys of South Wales. In the United States, the first ground freezing application, to a depth of 30 m (100 ft), occurred in 1888 for the Chapin Mine Co. in Iron Mountain, MO. In England in 1901, the Poetsch method was used for the first time to successfully sink two shafts through 24 to 27 m (80 to 90 ft) of wet sand and boulder clay at the Washington Glebe Colliery, near Sunderland. British mining engineer T.H. Cockin, in his 1905 Class-Book of Practical Coal-Mining, noted that, ?This method of sinking through thick beds of very wet quicksand has met with great success; it is one of the recognized methods of sinking on the Continent.? Mine shaft freezing soon became relatively common in Europe where the project could bear the cost of a major refrigeration plant construction. However, it was not until 1952 that the second North American ground freezing project was completed to facilitate the sinking of a 4.5-m- (15-ft-) diameter, 233-m- (765-ft-) deep shaft at a Potash Company of America (PCA) mine in Carlsbad, NM. Nowadays, ground freezing is used worldwide for both mining and civil applications. In small mine shafts of 3 to 6 m (10 to 20 ft) in diameter, excavations have been carried out to depths of more than 820 m (2,700 ft) within the protection of unbraced or unlined frozen walls. In fact, for deep mines, no better method has yet been established for sinking production shafts through deep, water-bearing ground. Major deposits of coal, potash and salt would still be inaccessible if not for artificial ground freezing. There are several advantages of ground freezing unique to the construction of shafts. Proper instrumentation can provide complete assurance of the integrity of the freeze to full depth prior to excavation. The frozen wall allows construction to be scheduled without evaluating the in-shaft time necessary to probe ahead, place additional sup-ports or deal with ground water. The freeze can be implemented perfectly through the soil/rock interface, which is often the most difficult geology in which to create a ground water cutoff by other methods. On the southern flank ofLihir Island, a group of three volcanic cones were discovered at water depths from 1000 - 1500 m. The volcanoes are located in a narrow zone of recent seismic activity and elevated heat flow (up to 100 mW/m2). The recovered rocks consist of fresh alkali-olivine basalts, clinopyroxene-rich basalts, and porphyritic phlogopite basalts. One of the volcanoes has a recently erupted ejecta blanket (recovery of warm ash!), containing a suite of abundant mafic to ultramafic xenoliths. These xenoliths appear to represent a unique cross-section of subduction-modified mantle material sampled by volatile-rich primary fore-arc magma during its ascent to the seafloor. The most spectacular finding was the discovery of an active hydrothermal system with associated vent fauna and mineralization at Edison Seamount, and the recovery of unusually gold-rich (up to 43 ppm Au) hydrothermal precipitates in 1050 m water depth at the top of Conical Seamount, only 25 km south of the world-class epithermal Ladolam gold deposit on Lihir. The discovery of submarine hydrothermal vents associated with highly alkaline, quartz-undersaturated fore-arc volcanics represents a significant departure from similar hydrothermal systems on the mid-ocean ridges and in back-arc basins. The high gold grades in hydrothermal precipitates at Conical Seamount may indicate the first documented example of a shallow-marine epithermal system analogous to those known on land, and has important implications' for the gold potential of submarine arc environments.

The development of an effective belt-cleaning system for a new conveyor system seemed a fairly conventional assignment. But a closer examination of the project showed a number of “fine print” details: •High altitude location (with resulting cold weather and low humidity conditions). •Long conveyor length. •Troublesome material (very sticky and capable of hardening like concrete). •Limited water. These difficulties are spelled out the challenge of developing a cleaning system for the production conveyor2 (PC2) belt at Climax Molybdenum’s Henderson Mine.

A new hyperbolic model for generating P-Y curves is developed for use in lateral analyses of cemented soils (a ?C-F? soil with both cohesive intercept and friction angle), and includes degradation of the static loading soil response to model the effects of load cycling (repeated loading) with load cycle number. The p-y curves, for both static and cyclic loading, were derived from full-scale lateral test results conducted on a set of six drilled shafts in a loess deposit at the Kansas DOT test site. Values of the model parameters obtained from the load testing at this site are presented, as well as a discussion of the model parameters effect on the results such that the model may be rationally applied to other sites with C-F type soils. A step-by-step procedure is presented to illustrate the application of the model. Correlation of the model to the CPT cone tip resistance (qc) from CPT testing is made, as this was found to be the most reliable; However, the model is applicable to other methods, both in-situ and laboratory, of assessing the soils strength.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated fumes generated by selected welding electrodes used in mines in order to help determine their relative health hazard potential. Fumes were generated and collected in an enclosed chamber for subsequent generation rate and chemical constituent determination. Shielded metal arc electrodes from the following groups were tested: AWS types E308-16 and E310-16 stainless steel, ECoCr-A Co-Cr hardfacing alloy, ENiCr Ni, an Mn-Cr buildup alloy, E7018 carbon steel, and EII018-M low-alloy steel. Flux-cored wire electrodes of this last group also were tested. Fume generation rates and the chemical composition of the fumes were measured. From these data, exposure in-dices were determined, which give a relative measure of the health hazard potential of using the electrodes. The effect of welding onto build-up alloy layers on the fume composition also was examined for five of the higher alloy groups.

A few studies on the relationship of the fusion temperature of the ash on coke to that of the corresponding coal have been made on commercial high-temperature cokes. H. J. Rose3/ in 1921 compared the fusion temperatures of the ashes of 10 coals and the cokes produced from them and concluded that they were in such hose agreement that either figure could be used. More recently, Quarfort4/ found that the ash of coke fused at a somewhat lower temperature than that of the original coal. As the ash of a coal and that off tie coke produced therefrom have the same origin their chemical composition should be identical, provided that carbonization has not altered the inorganic, or ash-forming, constituents of the coal, and such alteration seems highly improbable. However, it has been shown5/ that coke is liable to contamination by iron during crushing and grinding preparatory to sampling. Pieters6/ found that coke ash was contaminated in this manner up to 0.4 percent. Extraneous iron would lower the ash-fusion temperature because such iron may form ferrous silicate, which is readily fusible.7/ These results provide a basis for the prediction that the ash of coke will fuse at a lower temperature than that of the corresponding coal, especially if the fine grinding of the coke was done by rubbing -surfaces of iron, as in a disk pulverizer or bucking plate.

In this paper, closed expressions have been obtained for the frequency spectrum of a Born-Karman square lattice in terms of elliptic and hyperelliptic integrals. This work is part of continuing research by the Bureau of Mines with the thermodynamic properties of metals and minerals. Although other workers have obtained various types of approximations for the general case of the frequency spectrum of a square lattice, no one previously has obtained closed analytic expressions for this spectrum. To understand the optical and thermodynamic properties of crystals, several investigators have studied the distribution of frequencies of normal modes of vibration of the crystal lattice. Born and Karman3 laid the foundation for the theory of lattice dynamics and obtained detailed results for the case of a one-dimensional lattice. Blackman4 used numerical techniques to estimate the frequency distribution of a two-dimensional square lattice. Mbntroll5 analytically determined the frequency distribution of a square lattice for a particular value of the force constants. He also studied the more general problem and obtained some analytic approximations, using the method of moments. However, the calculations by this method were so difficult that it was not always practicable to carry them out. Surface analysis by X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) of samples taken from the galena flotation section of the Hilton Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines Limited are presented. Flotation rate and pulp chemical data taken during the sampling period are also presented and discussed. Surface analysis suggested that, under normal operating conditions, an overlayer of precipitated calcium sulfate existed at the surface of the sulfide minerals. In particular, there was a decrease in the surface concentration of calcium sulfate for the concentrate samples relative to that occurring on the tailing samples. This suggests that the flotation process was selective against minerals which have calcium sulfate predominating at the surface. Heterocoagulation of hydrophilic calcium sulfate on to the galena surface considerably reduced galena flotation rate. Methods to control calcium sulfate precipitation, which include sodium carbonate treatment of the pulp, are also discussed. Sur- face analysis results of samples taken from the Hilton Concentrator during sodium carbonate addition to the grinding circuit are also presented. This shows clear evidence for the removal of calcium sulfate from the mineral surfaces without concomitant surface precipitation of calcium carbonate. Reasons for the apparent dispersion of precipitated calcium carbonate are discussed. Galena flotation rate was increased by the addition of sodium carbonate apparently due to the removal of interfering calcium sulfate.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION The York Durham Sanitary System (YDSS) Interceptor in the Town of Richmond Hill located just north of Toronto, Ontario, Canada will see the construction of a tunnel extending along 19th Avenue for a length of approximately 3.8 Km from Yonge Street, east to Leslie Street and will have a minimum internal diameter of 2.1 m. t to Leslie Street and will have a minimum internal diameter of 2.1 m. The tunnel will connect into four shafts, for which two of the shafts will be constructed using the slurry wall construction method given the high water table and difficult ground conditions encountered at these locations. The two shafts noted as Access Shaft No. 2 and No. 3 were designed and constructed to meet regulatory conditions, which required a sealed shaft construction method. GEOGRAPHICAL PROFILE The ground conditions in the Toronto region consist predominately of glacial till, glaciolacustrine and glaciofluvial sand, silt and clay deposits, and beach sands and gravels. The shallow geological formation found in the project area consists of four types of deposits: Oak Ridge Morain deposits, Halton Till, Glacial lake deposits and Organic soils. The Oak Ridge Morain is the dominant deposit encountered along the tunnel alignment. This formation consists of three deposits: The Upper Till, Middle Sand and the Lower Till. Standard penetration tests (SPT) carried out in these deposits measured N-values ranging from 2 to more than 100 blows/300mm which indicate very loose to very dense soil conditions. The Middle Sand deposit will be the dominant feature within the slurry wall construction at access shafts 2 and 3. Access Shaft 3 The base of the slurry wall will be 20.5 M below the ground surface. Slurry wall excavation will be within peat and organic soils found at the upper 3 M, followed by 5 M of the Upper Till. The remainder of the excavation will be within the Middle Sand. The piezometric head elevation is found at the ground surface. Access Shaft 2 The base of the slurry wall will be 22.5 M below the ground surface. Slurry wall excavation will be entirely within the Middle Sand 2.The piezometric head elevation is found at 7 M below the ground surface.

The contract objective was to evaluate sources of airborne quartz and research control methods that would assist underground mine operators in complying with respirable dust standards which have been reduced because of quartz in the dust exceeding five percent. The work involved: Phase I -evaluate sources of quartz dust at the roof bolter work location; Phase II -evaluate the relationship between the quartz content of the coal and adjoining rock strata and quartz exposure at the roof bolter and continuous miner locations Phase III -conduct laboratory tests to determine performance parameters for roof bolter dust collector systems. The underground surveys for Phases I and II determined: (1) the continuous miner typically is the greatest source of quartz exposure for the miner and roof bolter operators when single-split ventilation is utilized, (2) a statistically significant relationship be­tween quartz content in face material and operator exposure was not determined and data suggested mining equipment and procedures may be more critical. The Phase III lab tests indicated the use of dust hog-type bits, filter cartridges, maximized collector airflow, and reduced bit rpm should be utilized to minimize dust liberation at the roof bolter.

Many technical professionals (tp)* desire to occupy upper level management positions. But career paths for most scientists and engineers do not extend beyond their specific disciplines. This is unfortunate. Our technical frontiers are expanding so rapdily that it is difficult, if not impossible, to make sound top management decisions without understanding the technical complexities involved. Technical professionals often are not considered for upper level management positions because they lack the managerial and interpersonal skills necessary to become successful administrators. You've heard this before, but a key component of these skills is the ability to communicate. Technical professionals are often unable to communicate as well as they should with nontechnical professionals and nonprofessionals within the organizations that employ them. Communication is important for managerial success Communication is the network of interactions whereby knowledge and understanding are conveyed from one social set to another (Flippo and Munsinger, 1982). In order to be successful, managers must not only be "good" communicators, they must be "effective" communicators as well. Good communication occurs when managers are able to formulate and transmit their messages in such a way that they are received and understood. Effective communication goes one step further: It occurs when recipients accept messages as legitimate and respond to these messages in the manner desired. Before promotion into upper level positions, managers must have developed organizational skills (planning, decision making, organizing, and controlling) and interpersonal skills (directing, influencing, and motivating). Applying these skills effectively is difficult without a highly refined ability to communicate. Effective communication, then, is basic to managerial success. Nowhere, perhaps, has the importance of being able to communicate effectively been emphasized more than in Mintzberg's landmark study of managerial roles (Mintzberg, 1973). Mintzberg's results indicate that executives typically averaged 36 written and 16 verbal contacts a day. These contacts were both important and trivial. They generally occurred in a random manner. Time spent on each varied. Scheduled meetings averaged over an hour. Desk work, telephone calls, and unscheduled meetings required an average of 15 minutes or less. Why technical professionals have difficulty communicating Three reasons why technical professionals do not communicate well are: • The work motivational patterns and personal attitudes of technical professionals are not conducive to effective communication. • Students in technical professions are not encouraged by educational institutions to develop their communication skills. • Organizations do not insist that all technical professionals be able to communicate in the language of business. The work motivational patterns of most technical professionals are indicative of internals and high achievers (Hunt, Salisbury, and Whittington, 1968). As internals, they believe they control their own destinies. As high achievers, they believe that task accomplishment is a primary indicator of success. To ensure a task is completed in the manner desired, tp's attempt to structure and define work situations so they alone are responsible for results. TPs consider the task accomplished when they, and perhaps other tp's, are satisfied with the results. From the tp's perspective, the task may have been completed. From a communication standpoint, two other factors may apply. First, solving the problem required very little interaction (and thus, communication) with others. Second, the tp's, considering the task accomplished, have little concern for how their "technical" answers will be translated to nontechnical persons needing

Objective To develop safety training tools for mine safety and health professionals that fill gaps in currently available materials. Background Over the past 4 years, NIOSH has developed and released a series of training videos targeted at underground mine safety. These videos were developed in close cooperation with the mining industry and safety training professionals and were intended to provide realistic, interesting, effective training to both new hires and experienced miners. The videos cover the mining cycle, starting with the breaking of the rock (Handling Explosives in Modern Mines), making certain the work area is safe after a blast (Rock Falls— Preventing Rock Fall Injuries in Underground Mines), installation of ground supports and recognition of failed supports (Miner Mike Saves the Day), and hauling both ore and materials in the mine (Hazards in Motion). A separate video (Hidden Scars) captures the story of a fatal rock burst through an interview with a miner who nearly died and who lost his partner in the accident. These videos have been extremely popular in the mining industry and are being used across the nation as well as in 18 other countries. Two of them, Rock Falls and Miner Mike Saves the Day, have won Alice Hamilton awards, NIOSH’s highest recognition for Excellence in Occupational Safety and Health, in the Educational Materials category. Approach A recently completed independent evaluation of the SRL mining videos identified five themes that mine safety trainers consider necessary for successful training materials: high quality, credibility, accurate content, effectiveness, and an engaging nature. All of the NIOSH videos were rated very high for each theme. Using these measures of effectiveness, a more difficult challenge has been undertaken. Much has been written in the mining industry about the coming turnover in employment. The average age of miners in the United States is approaching 50, and many of the “experts” will be leaving the industry as they reach retirement age. The mining industry, like many industries involving skilled labor, relies heavily on a master-apprentice relationship between new hires and older miners. New hands learn from experienced miners. Their learning falls into three primary categories—they learn what’s important to know, they learn how to do things correctly and safely, and they learn the culture.

"Deteriorating ore grade and high demand of metals has tremendously influenced the unit capacity of SAG mills. Pebble circuits have been added to the existing SAG circuits to increase their unit capacity. To make the pebble circuits justifiable, the grate openings are increased almost to 4.5 inches to draw large quantity of pebbles. The inherent transportation problems associated with SAG mills in closed circuit with pebble fraction are more complicated than the single stage SAG mill operation, because the coarse pebbles behave significantly different to that of slurry in pulp lifters. In addition, operation of mills at higher speed, to take advantage of precise design of high release angled shell lifters significantly reduces the discharge efficiency of the conventional pulp dischargers. The presence of a sizable quantity of pebbles in the pulp lifter limits the space available and reduces the flow gradient through the grate thus increases the load inside the mill and hence the mill power-draw. This paper analyses all the problems associated in discharge of slurry and pebbles in SAG mills with pebble circuits. The Outokumpu patented Turbo Pulp Lifter (TPLTM) aims at eliminating the inherent material transport problems to ensure good grinding conditions. Recent installation of TPLTM in a 26-ft SAG mill has proven these claims by reducing the specific power consumption while increasing the mill capacity.INTRODUCTIONThe conventional wisdom is to look at the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill as just another grinding mill in which ball charge, mill filling, and mill speed are varied to attain maximum throughput. Liner design for the SAG was also approached more from a wear perspective rather than a metallurgical and hydraulic-flow perspective. The extensive research work carried out by Latchireddi and Morrell (1997,2003a and 2003b) has demonstrated to think of the SAG as more of a pump in which the grates and pulp discharger end (“impeller”) were designed to efficiently discharge the product sized particles smaller than the grate size with minimal recirculation out of the mill.The rock load in the mill is essentially depends on ore characteristics and the discharge rate of broken particles. The discharge rate of the product material depends on how efficiently the discharge pump (grate and pulp lifters) is operating. Similar to the impeller design affecting the pump capacity, the pulp lifter design affects the discharge capacity (or mill throughput) of the SAG/AG grinding mills. The general arrangement of AG/SAG mills discharge system is shown in Figure 1."

This publication presents a study by the Federal Bureau of Mines of 494 accidents in open-pit iron-ore mines, beneficiation plants, and shops of the Lake Superior district from March 1949 to June 1956. These accidents caused 499 lost-time injuries, including 12 fatalities. A similar Bureau publication, Information Circular 7744, Analysis of 346 Accidents, Underground Iron-Ore Mines, Lake Superior District, was published in April 1956. Accident reports were analyzed by the Bureau to show the causes of in-juries and the unsafe practices or conditions that caused the accidents. Also shown are the time charges, times of occurrence, ages of the injured by job classification, and experience of the injured in mines and on the job being performed when hurt. Detailed information is presented on approximately 27 percent of the total number of disabling accidents that occurred in open-pit iron-ore mines, beneficiation plants, and shops in the district during the period covered. The text also contains tabulations of the accident experience and graphs with straight-line injury-frequency, injury-severity, and fatality trends for the period 1946-57.

Pile load test programs were carried out in 1984 and 1985 at Stelco's and Dofasco's Steel Making Plants in the Hamilton Bayfront area. 323.9 mm outside diameter by 9.5 mm wall thickness Grade 3 steel closed-end pipe piles were driven to practical refusal at depths of 21 to 30 m in very dense silt till with Delmag D30 open-end diesel hammers. Ultimate bearing capacities of up to 5330 kN were proved by dynamic monitoring and static load tests. Allowable bearing capacities of 1780 kN were achievable on production piles without undue difficulty. It was found that the impact stress at the top of the pile was controlled by the yield strength of the steel rather than a useable upper limit based on the modulus of elasticity. A bearing to impact stress ratio of 1.2 at practical refusal was observed to be reasonable but conservative at this site, and is felt to be generally applicable for piles driven to practical refusal elsewhere. Dynamic monitoring during production pile driving was able to show that apparent relaxation was caused by pre-ignition of the hammer when visual observations indicated that pile driving was proceeding satisfactorily.

This report chronicles the historical development of longwall mining in the United States and speculates on future developments to the turn of the century. Five eras of technological development during the modern period are described and analyzed. These eras discuss the development of (1) mechanized extraction, (2) self advancing roof supports, (3) high capacity roof supports, (4) shield supports, and (5) system automation. Current trends are analyzed in terms of: longwall utilization, production capability, support capacity, face widths, and new technological developments. From these analyses, the future of longwall mining to the year 2000 is speculated. It is concluded that longwall mining will continue to grow in importance during the next decade and that the next major technological milestone will be the realization of a fully automated longwall mining system.

"Through funds made available in 1972 by the Nova Scotia Department of Mines and Energy (DME) and the federal Department of Regional Economic Expansion, a program was initiated to recover saleable coal from mine waste dumps adjacent to the existing Acadia wash plant in Stellarton, Nova Scotia.Following evaluation of these dumps in 1972, the Acadia wash plant was modified to treat high-ash material. The first production was recorded in late 1974. By the end of 1979, a total of 738,202 t of dump material had been processed, yielding a total of 205,212 t of thermal-quality coal.The successful Stellarton operation led to considering the possibility of recovering thermal coal from other dumps. Evaluation of the Westville dumps indicated total recoverable reserves of 1,346,617 t averaging 53.8OJo ash.Parameters for plant design were defined from the washability characteristics of the dump material and the results of a bulk test. Two options were proposed; one was to use the existing plant with some modifications, the other was to build a modular mobile plant that could be used at future dump sites in the province after Westville. At the 25% ash level, the potential recovery of coal from the dump was estimated at 41% yield (by weight) or 549,679 t."

Bateman Engineering Project's acid-plant track record goes back to 1977. Bateman Engineering can design sulphuric plants based on gas from sulphur burners, metallurgical off gas as well as pyrite roasting systems. Bateman Engineering has a technology marketing agreement with NORAM Engineering Ltd of Canada to provide state-of-the-art, well-proven acid plant technology, and also has access to roaster technology from several sources, including Chinese technology. Utilising the Noram technology agreement, Bateman was awarded the Engineering and Procurement (EP) contract for the Ambatovy Nickel Project, Sulphuric Acid Facilities in 2007. This is the first Greenfield sulphuric acid plant Bateman has designed for many years, producing a combined 5,500tpd, and is one of the largest sulphur burning acid plants in the world.
