"Control of analytical data quality is usually referred to in the mining industry as Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QAQC), and involves the monitoring of sample quality and quantification of analytical accuracy and precision. QAQC procedures normally involve using sample duplicates and specially prepared standards whose grade is known. Numerous case studies indicate that reliable control of sample precision is achieved by using approximately 5% to 10% of field duplicates and 3% to 5% of pulp duplicates. These duplicate samples should be prepared and analyzed in the primary laboratory.Bias in the analytical results can be identified by inclusion of 3% to 5% of the standard in each sample batch. Several different standards are used, with values spanning the practical range of grades in the actual samples. A blank (a sample in which the concentration of metal of interest is below detection limit) should also be included. Standard samples alone cannot identify biases introduced during sample preparation, and therefore approximately 5% of the duplicate samples (coarse rejects and pulp) should be processed and assayed at another, external, reputable laboratory.This paper discusses techniques used for estimation of errors in precision and accuracy, and overviews diagnostic tools. It is shown that one of the most commonly used methods, the Thompson-Howarth technique, produces consistently lower results than other methods. These results reflect the nature of this method, which relies on the assumption of a normally distributed error, and thus produces biased results when errors have a skewed distribution. This study concurs with the suggestion of Stanley and Lawie (2007: Exploration and Mining Geology, v. 16, p. 265-274) to use the average coefficient of variation (CVAVR(%)) as the universal measure of relative precision error in mine geology applications: Le contrôle de la qualité des données analytiques est habituellement désigné sous l’appellation d’Assurance et Contrôle de la Qualité (ACQ), elle implique le suivi de la qualité des échan¬tillons et la quantification de la reproductibilité et la précision analytiques. Stirred milling using either horizontal or vertical mills has made a rapid entrance into PGM ore and tailings concentrator flow sheets. Currently there are in excess of 40 units installed in either mainstream, ?MIG? or intermediate concentrate regrind, ?UFG?, applications in PGM, primary ore treatment plants or in tailings scavenging and reclamation treatment plants. This represents a total of approximately 70 MW of installed fine grinding equipment. This paper outlines the reasons why the technology take-up has been rapid and illustrates the advantages of this technology over conventional milling. Impala Platinum?s No.16 Shaft mine is currently under construction and is expected to reach full production of 256 500 tons per month by 2014. Mining will start at 1 260 m below surface with a maximum mining depth of 1 535 m where virgin rock temperatures of 56.6°C will be experienced. As a result of depth, high virgin rock temperature and narrow reef mining, an expected total of 31.5 MW[R] of air cooling capacity will be required to achieve acceptable underground conditions. This will be achieved by cooling mine intake air in a single dedicated air cooling installation located on surface. The compact installation includes air cooling spray chamber, refrigeration machines, condenser cooling towers, evaporator and condenser water reticulation as well as all electrical and control systems. Construction and commissioning of the first phase of this air cooling installation has recently been completed on a turn-key contract basis.

An experimental study of ground motion from explosions designed to remove overburden in an open pit coal mine is reported. The purpose of this study is a characterization of these ground motions in the distance range of several tens of meters to several kilometers. The investigation has focused upon both single cylindrical sources with different explosive configurations as well as arrays of charges in the production mode. Critical to this study of source configuration and coupling is experimental control of the individual explosions, the timing of the explosions and the geological properties. The height of the explosive charges, their depth and charge distribution were monitored in the field. High speed photography as well as velocity of detonation measurements were made on the multiple explosion source so that detonation of individual charges could be documented.

With the development of larger mine-haulage trucks in recent years, the visual field of the driver has diminished correspondingly. Specifically, the operator's lack of direct vision in the right front area and directly to the rear constitutes a serious hazard to personnel in nearby small utility vehicles. Recently developed electronic technology has made it possible to supplement the use of mirrors and fresnel lenses to warn the operator of specific collision dangers in the truck's blind areas. This Bureau of Mines report describes the results of a coordinated contract and in-house research program to develop and test in-mine prototype electronic systems to detect the presence of smaller vehicles within the blind areas of large mine-haulage trucks. Each system utilized transmitters installed on the smaller vehicles and receivers installed on the haulage trucks. Transmitting techniques tested included both low-and high-frequency radio waves. On-vehicle testing established the engineering feasibility of each approach. Further private sector product development to improve reliability and reduce system costs is recommended. Mining companies should consider the advantages of each type of system.

An understanding of the way that solutes are transported in mining or natural environments is essential to the development of sound strategies for managing waste disposal. Research on miscible pollutant movement in unsaturated porous media is carried out both experimentally and numerically. Results of numerical modelling are obtained by solving the groundwater flow equation and the solute transport equation. The finite element method is employed and comparisons between simulation results and experimental data are found in remarkable agreement.

"This study interprets vibrations produced by single underground shots, recorded on surface by 135 digital seismographs laid out in four linear arrays. Several vibration anomalies were observed and are investigated. A novel method of displaying the blast-induced vibration iso-contour data relative to the three-dimensional representations of the geological rock units and structures leads to the following interpretations:• The identified faults commonly dampen or amplify vibrations, on the evidence of the peak particle velocity,• Strong anisotropy of geologic formations produces different vibration attenuation in the various directions of interest,• Low-vibration “depressions” can be related to the presence of faults, and• Higher vibration levels than expected based on ‘scaled-distance’ principles are observed close to intersecting faults.The interpretations from this study document a better understanding of the geotechnical influences on blast induced stress wave propagation in a geologically complex area. The practical benefit of this understanding is better control of surface vibrations, experienced from underground mining activities."

The fundamental features of the Cable Belt Conveyor are described. It consists of independent wire ropes which take the transmission load, and a special reinforced rubber belt which acts 'only as carrier of material. The first cable belt installation in Scotland is described briefly.A general description of this type of conveyor is followed by details of the rubber belt construction and the method of joining sections of belt. The drive unit, the tensioning arrangements and the power requirements are outlined.Applications of the cable belt conveyor are 'dealt with and its advantages summarized.INTRODUCTIONThe cable belt conveyor, as its name implies is a conveyor composed of steel wire ropes and a rubber belt, in which the ropes serve as transmission members, and the belt merely as a carrier of materials.Over the years it has been the ambition of engineers connected with the belt conveyor industry to develop a conveyor that would use the high tensile strength of wire ropes to transmit the stresses involved in the driving of large capacity belt conveyors. Different lines of approach have been adopted in the United States of America and in Britain. In the United States the method adopted was to introduce a large number of flexible steel cables into the rubber belt itself, in the form of a closely packed layer arranged across the full width of the belt. These small cables are packed in a nylon filled duck envelope which is incorporated in the rubber belt. This is commonly known as the steel corded conveyor belt. In Britain, a Scottish firm developed a rubber belt conveyor in which full advantage was taken of the high tensile features of wire rope, without embodying or moulding the wire rope into the rubber belt, so that the two wire ropes and the rubber...

The Functional Performance Equation for Ball Milling” was first presented in 1988. It now has been used successfully in more than a dozen mineral processing plants. This powerful, yet simple tool provides a new level of understanding of closed circuit grinding. It shows how grinding circuit efficiency is in reality comprised of two distinct efficiencies. It demonstrates how circuit production rate is related, collectively, to these two efficiencies, mill energy input, and the grindability of the ore. It links circuit performance to design and operating variables that can be manipulated, and creates an effective strategy for making plant improvements. This paper covers the derivation and industrial validation of this equation. As part of an engineering and management system that also incorporates suitable metrics and process control, other operators can now use this tool to make improvements and to manage the performance of their grinding operations with clarity and confidence.

ANDROS INCORPORATED has designed, manufactured and delivered four handheld C02 DETECTORS and three handheld CH4 DETECTORS. These instruments are for in-mine safety use. The DETECTORS incorporated an NDIR optical/electronic analyzer design in which exceptional zero stability is achieved by pressure modulation of the sample gas. This eliminates the need for daily calibration. This stability and the miniature design (2.5" x 4.5" x 4.5"; 4.5 lbs) of the C02/CH4 DETECTORS provide practical instruments suitable for routine safety inspections. This report includes the theory and design of the instruments as well as studies of gas-pressure modulation by a piezoceramic-driven Helmholtz resonator.

This report presents the results of a program to improve, using existing and proven technology, unstable highwall conditions through better blasting practices in Appalachian strip coal mines. Better borehole blasting agent distribution and optimization of burden, spacing, and delay periods allowing satisfactory breakage with minimal backbreak were the objectives. At a selected field site, geologic conditions were closely examined with regard to joint orientation and spacing, and resulting slope stability considerations. A test series of eight blasts was completed and the resultant highwall monitored by repetitive photography. The study of drilling and blasting economics along with equipment performance led to an economic model of blast parameters and the identification of blast design cost benefits. The work demonstrated that small strip mining companies' are able to achieve a more stable highwall excavation utilizing presently available technology, equipment, and explosive products at improved operational cost and safety.

Ante los problemas de sismicidad inducidos por el sistema de minado en la Compañía minera Milpo, se planteó una solución a través del sistema de monitoreo sísmico único, donde se da una distribución espacial de 20 censores entre uniaxiales y triaxiales distribuidos en 3 niveles de producción en el área de influencia de las actuales operaciones para así ubicar, cualificar y cuantificar el fenómeno a efectos de realizar los análisis interpretativos del caso. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe el sistema de monitoreo, cuyo software sísmico está diseñado para determinar nuevas estructuras formadas a partir de los eventos sísmicos pre existentes reactivadas por la sismicidad inducida, así como el desarrollo de planos de isocontornos que permiten la diferenciación entre zonas de altos y bajos esfuerzos.

This report describes the development and limited testing of a semi-automatic, raise climber, Compact Service Hoist System designed for stope access in underground metal and nonmetal mines. Demonstrated capabilities of the system include a 1,000-lb payload capacity, control from the traveling cage and from up to three remote stations, operating in vertical or inclined raises 3 ft in diameter and up to 300 ft in length and a travel speed of 50 ft/min. The system has the capability of operating in crooked raises because the conveyance climbs two stationary wire ropes suspended down the raise. The drive unit is electrically powered with power and control signals supplied to the drive unit through an umbilical 'cable also suspended down the raise. The system has been designed for portability, ease of installation and minimum raise development. The hoist has been demonstrated successfully in an above ground test tower. This report provides a detailed description of the hoist design and its demonstrated performance to date.

Historically bauxite-based refractories have been used in applications where andalusite-based refractories could work. Bauxite-based refractories were chosen over andalusite-based refractories mainly because of the availability of low-cost Chinese bauxite and also because many furnaces were designed by international companies that cannot easily access high-quality products. Currently, the availability of low-cost bauxite is under threat as a result of high export duties and tariffs as well as restrictions on the amount of material that China allows to be exported. South Africa is a major producer of andalusite, and this guarantees stability with respect to both availability and price. Refractories based on andalusite have an added economic advantage over bauxite-based refractories in that unlike bauxite, which requires high-temperature calcination before use, andalusite is used in its raw state. This paper constitutes a literature study of the merits, both technical and economic, of using refractories based on andalusite compared to bauxite-based refractories. The reduction process of pre-oxidized ilmenite concentrate powder in 30%CO–70%N2 atmosphere was characterized by thermogravimetric and differential thermogravimetric (TG-DTG) analysis system at the temperature from 1073 to1223 K. The isothermal reduction results show that the reduction process is divided into three stages and the corresponding apparent activation energies are obtained by iso-conversional method and model-fitting method, respectively. For the first stage, the conversion degree increases sharply with increasing time, and the reduction process is controlled by the random nucleation and subsequent growth model (A2 model). For the second stage, the conversion degree increases slowly with increasing time, and the reduction process is controlled by the diffusion of carbon monoxide in the reduced layer (D1 model). For the third stage, the reduction processes at different temperatures are controlled by the diffusion of carbon monoxide in the reduced layer (1073 K and D1 model), phase boundary chemical reaction (1123 K and R2 model), random nucleation and subsequent growth (1173 to 1223 K, A2, and A3 models), respectively. For the whole reduction process, the apparent activation energies obtained by iso-conversional method and model-fitting method are 71.72 and 31.92 kJ mol−1 , respectively

Beneficiation of phosphate in the southeastern United States generates a slurry of finely divided clay. These clay-wastes are impounded to allow the particulates to settle. The aggregation of phosphatic clay-slime wastes and slimes produced from potash beneficiation by microbial processes was studied using several bacterial species known to produce polymeric substances. Experiments included flocculation capacity of clay-slimes by whole cells, the determination of respiratory activity of whole culls in the presence of phosphatic clays, observation of clay flocculation rates by polymers derived from these organisms, and clarity of polymer-flocculated clay suspensions. The polymer-producing organisms exhibited little capacity for flocculating phosphate and potash clay-slimes. Fungal spores of Cladosporium cladosporioides (isolated from a phosphate clay-waste impoundment), when agitated with clay-slime for several days, caused the clay to form pellets. Separation of the clay/fungal pellets (density 1.1 g ml-1) from the process water might he possible using a screening technique. Studies with C. cladosporioides included the determination of suitable energy substrates and supplements for growth, absorption studies of a pigment produced by the organism, determination of the time required for bioflocculant production by the organism, and an elucidation of the conditions required for the pelletization of clay-slimes by the fungus.

A pilot installation built at SveDeFo is described. The relevant factors, that govern the use of this test method as a means of classifying explosives with respect to their toxic fume potential, are described.
