The term geochemistry - chcmbtry' of the earth - is almost limitless in its implied subject, but of recent years a major trend of research in this field has been towards economic application in the search for mineral deposits, and in particular for those of some ofthe less common elements for which a demand now exists.Geochemistry is in a state of slow transition from a purely descriptive subject to a fundamental science concerned with the relationships that exist between the distribution of the elements in the earth's crust and the physical characteristics of the atoms of those elements. The progress achieved promises a set of basic principles which will relate the atomic characteristics of an element to the physico-chemical conditions that make for its dispersion or concentration. This means that, given a geological map of an areasufficiently detailed for the physico-chemical conditions existing in past geological eras to be deduced, there is the possibility that the relative distribution throughout that area of any element present, and its likely mode of occurrence, could be predicted from a consideration of its atomic characteristics.Since the atomic characteristics of the elements are becoming increasingly well defined by physical research, the attainment of this ideal of prediction depends upon:(a) the strengthening of geochemical theory; and(b) the development of petrological and mineralogical methods of assessing the conditions of temperature and pressure prevailing in geological formations at various stages in their history.The other prime requirement is a d.etailed geological map - a requirement that is all too often lacking.The fact that there has been very little "geochemical approach" to problems of economic geology in Australia should not be taken to mean that there is little point in trying to develop such an approach here in as active and as rigidly scientific a manner as possible. The degree of success that has attended the attempts so far made, to which reference is made below, suggests the reverse, particularly in view of the relatively slight cost involved if the investigations were properly organised on a centralised basis. There are three aspects of geochemistry that are directly applicable to the search for economic minerals.(a) The classic technique of the prospector can be made more sensitive and reliable by the use of modern equipment coupled with the application of geochemical theory to geological and structural data. The case of the rare alkali elements (see below) is givenhere as an illustration of the way in which the distribution of elements can be predicted from the first principles of geochemistry, thereby replacing the prospector's dependence on his "sixth sense" that enabled him to suggest that a certain area of formation was"favourable" for the occurrence of a certain type of mineral deposit.At its best, this sixth sense amounted to an almost subconscious correlation of all relevant associations and typical occurrences of the particular mineral experienced by the prospector during his...

A large lab apparatus was designed using a scale-down methodology based on the design legacy of the current FLSmidth commercial forced air flotation machines. This new apparatus, along with a new test methodology, was used to evaluate new rapid prototype concepts. The apparatus was designed to monitor bubble size, power, pumping capacity, Jg, velocity profiles, froth character, and tip speed. The methodology developed follows a sequence that goes from hydrodynamic tests and solids suspension tests to a flotation kinetic test. This methodology has been demonstrated to be a good tool to determine the effect of machine design changes on flotation.

Regulatory processes associated with development of major mining operations in Alaska and British columbia were evaluated using specific case studies. Included were one hard rock mine in Alaska (Red Dog Mine), one hard rock mine In British Columbia (Snip Mine), and one offshore gold dredging project in Alaska (WestGold SIMA). Based on a comparison of the three case studies, it became clear that the primary incentives for cost effective permitting are: 1) early and continuing coordination of proposed project plans, designs and schedules with key regulatory agencies and local area residents and 2) development of a sufficient level of baseline information on air quality, water quality, wetlands, endangered species, fish and wildlife, and socia-cultural conditions to support the required permit application. The U.S. permitting process worked in much the same way as the Canadian permitting process. Disincentives of mine permitting include high initial costs for baseline data gathering. However, a relatively high early investment resulted in more efficient permit acquisition and reduced long-term monitoring requirements. A common problem Identified was the inadequate supply of trained agency personnel with the requisite technical and permitting experience. This sometimes resulted in poor decisions and unnecessary changes in project plans and schedules.

Microwave heating has been proved an effective method to rapidly heat iron oxide. This offers an opportunity to apply microwave heating in the steelmaking process. The reduction reaction of iron oxide is traditionally achieved at high temperature with reducing gases such as H2 and CO generated from various sources, including coke, coal, and natural gas. This study investigates the differences in iron oxide reduction using conventional and microwave heating under H2 and CO atmospheres. A special microwave thermal gravimetric device was designed and built to facilitate the investigation. With this device, iron oxides can be heated by electric resistance heating, microwave heating, or a combination of methods. The incoming CO and/or H2 also can be preheated to simulate a potential utilization of recovered heat. The iron oxide weight and temperature can be monitored during an entire reduction period. A series of reduction experiments have been conducted. The results are presented and discussed.

THIS has been a much-neglected branch of engineering. With the majority of industries labour is the chief item of trouble and expense. Anything that will reduce trouble and increase efficiency is well worth considering. It is only of recent years that any attempt has been made on a scientific basis to improve conditions sporadic attempts having been made from time to time, privately and by law. Some have been successful, others unsuccessful not necessarily the fault of those who initiated the ideas, though naturally mistakes were made in some cases for want of experience, but those whom it was desired to benefit were not always prepared for the change, and by their distrust hampered schemes instead of assisting them.Man power is generally more expensive than machinery, though there are exceptions, such as when a small amount of work has to be done in a place where machinery does not exist, and it would not pay to instal any or where labour is cheap, and skilled workmen are scarce as in some tropical countries. When machinery is first introduced it generally causes the suspicion that it will deprive men of their work. It may cause men to vary the conditions of their work, and in some individual cases, when men are unable to conform to changed circumstances it may result in a certain amount of hardship; but, after all, the less competent must not hold back progress for the general good. "Niobium or columbium, as usually called in North America is becoming a more and more important metal in the industrial world because of its attractive properties.Eventhough discovered in the early nineteenth century, it was not until the 1930's that its use became more widespread. The discovery of large commercial deposits in the late 1950's and the demand of industry for steel with high strength and toughness further promoted its use. To assure its adequate supply new or-e processinr technologies had to be developed. So, beside the traditional gravity concentration, the flotation process was employed for the partial upgrading of pyrochlore concentrate at S8ve (Norway) plant in 1953. The flotation process was equally used at St-Lawrence Columbium plant in the province of Quebec, Canada. The new plants at Araxa and Catalao in Brazil and at St-Honore, Canada, which supply almost of all niobium used today in the non-Communist world, also adopted the flotation process. The processes using long chain aliphatic rnonoarnines, diamines or sulfonates as collectors proved to be difficult especially on weathered types of ores or on those having a substantial content of silicate gangue minerals. They almost completely failed in case of alkaline intrusive rocks as syenites, nepheline syenite, ijolites and pyroxenites, composed almost entirely of silicate minerals. A lot of effort was devoted all around the world on research of new, more efficient flotation processes. So in 1982, Les Services T.M.G. Inc. (Niobec), sole producer of pyrochlore concentrate in North America, developed the direct pyrochlore flotation process from carbonatites. In 1983, at about the same time, the Quebec Department of Natural Resources Laboratories and Les Services T.M.G. Inc. announced a successful recovery of niobium Minera1s from a low grade nenheline syenite ore."

With the exception of occasional periods, when up to 80% of oxidized ore was treated, the G.M.K. plant treated all sulphide ore until October, 1939. The treatment was, briefly, as follows:The ore was ground to approximately 17% plus 200 mesh Tyler and agitated in cyanide solution, after straking. After agitation, the pulp passed through two stages of counter-current decantation washing in Dorr thickeners and was filtered once, to complete the precyanidation stage.The precyanide filter cake was repulped with flotation circuit solution and floated in a Denver Sub A flotation machine, consisting of twelve cells. The concentrates were roasted, cyanided and filtered four times before disposal to the' dam. The flotation tailings were thickened to conserve water and pumped away to a separate dam.The average results of flotation operations for the six months before October, 1939, are shown in Table 1.

Augercast piles are formed by drilling a continuous-flight auger into the ground and, on reaching the required depth, sand-cement grout or concrete is pumped down the hollow stem as the auger is withdrawn. The sides of the hole are supported at all times by the soil-filled auger, eliminating the need for temporary casing or bentonite slurry. The augercast piling method is fast and economical; there is no vibration, very little noise and, if executed properly, no ground displacements during installation. The method is well suited to sands which are easy to drill and are readily transported up the auger. Relatively little attention has been given to augercast piles in the literature which might be part of the reason for the considerable variations in local practice, building code requirements and design methods. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the features of augercast pile installation that are known to influence both the structural and geotechnical capacity of the pile, to evaluate several empirical design methods and to look at some important aspects of quality control of augercast pile installation.

[Certain chapters of the tentative document entitled, "Test Requirements for instruments & Apparatus to be Considered for MESA Intrinsically Safe Certification" are evaluated and supporting data are presented on certain key issues with the purpose of helping the regulatory agency in improving the above document. The subjects discussed in detail are: hot wire ignition with W and BeCu wires; the most sensitive methane-air :and propane air ratio; the ignition limits for inductive-resistive circuits in 8.3°; methane-air mixtures in the 24-OV, 100 mH-2 [ ]H range, the resistive ignition limit as a special case when L ? 0; the capacitive-resistive ignition limit representing a four ,dimensional problem is analyzed and discussed in general and the variation of the ignition limit using Vo and/or r2 as a parameter are determined experimentally. The ignition limit is also determined for the [r1 ,~ r2] = 0 case ("capacitor alone") and for the most dangerous capacitive resistive circuit combination. The ignition limits are below the limits proposed in the document. A survey of the different factors influencing the ignition is made as to their suitability to provide a constant safety factor. It is shown that a constant safety factor cannot be achieved. The best method for applying a safety factor appears to be the increase of initial pressure or use of other gas mixture. The revision of the safety factor concept and ignition limit curves is recommended.]

The alternatives for these specific cases could be the usage of the deep mixing technology to create lateral support systems in reinforcing the deep mixing elements additionally to transfer the horizontal loads from earth – and water-pressure.With increasing demand in depth and water tightness, verticality and overlapping of single column solutions are becoming the key in execution. In addition, for some applications subsoil-conditions were not ideal for wet deep mixing technologies. The tubular soil mixing system (TSM) as a combination of mechanical mixing and support of hydraulic cutting by jet grouting can provide solutions toovercome these challenges.1. Current market conditions and trendsThe present financial crisis and the efforts not only to consolidate national budgets, but also to rescue certain banks, have not left the building industry unaffected either. Some drastic cutbacks to public budgets, along with the increasingly restrictive granting of credit for the financing of construction projects, have led to enormous over-capacities in the building sector, with purely negative impact. As a consequence of these negative developments, many companies are experiencing the pressure to restructure more quickly and to reduce costs but at the same time to keep the consequences of all activities, both externally and internally, within limits acceptable to employees, owners and finance institutions and last but not least consumers."

The U. S. Bureau of Mines made a reconnaissance In the western Crazy Mountains for cobalt and associated metals as part of the Alaska-wide critical and strategic metals program. The area, located about 75 miles north of Fairbanks in central Alaska, is underlain by complexly faulted, predominantly clastic sedimentary rocks bordering the Tintina Fault system. Above background metal concentrations were found to occur in altered fault zones, tectonic breccias, soils, and ground water seeps and precipitates that either cut or are derived from the faulted clastic sedimentary rocks. Up to 0.115 pct cobalt and more than 2.0 pct zinc were detected in soil samples. Spring precipitates contained up to 1.3 pct zinc, 0.037 pct tungsten, and other metals. Some localities lacked cobalt but contained anomalous amounts of copper, lead, zinc, silver, and other metals. No outcropping of primary metallic minerals was located because of Colluvium and vegetation cover and extensive deep leaching. Therefore, whether the metal values encountered are due to primary deposits with economic development potential or are the results of concentration by ground water from low-grade sources is unknown. The presence of cobalt, nickel and zinc, and the identification of minor tin and tungsten indicate that further investigation is warranted.

Wire rope, when used for hoisting on a mine is one of the most vulnerable units in the most expensive group of installations on the mine. With the introduction of hoisting on the Koepe sheave, a new technique was established. This innovation brought with it certain advantages which long had been recognized and which are being developed further.A need exists for the development of an infallible non-destructive testing device for wire ropes and it is axiomatic that the development and application of such a device should be coupled with the physical examination of mine hoisting systems. Therefore an integrated type of research programme is necessary in order to correlate the effect of shock loading with rope damage, which may be detected ultimately bynon-destructive means. This paper reviews certain historical aspects of investigations on this topic and it outlines a policy for research which can cope with a.c. or d.c. methods of excitation of the rope.INTRODUCTIONThe importance of wire rope in mining operations is often not fully recognized. A wire rope when used for hoisting in a mine shaft should be regarded as a "machine" forming part of a system of machines, and consequently it should be specified as such when it is purchased, it should be maintained as such during its working life, and it should be discarded only when it has done its duty and has been rendered either unsafe or uneconomic for further use.Every mine shaft, vertical or inclined, has in it one or more wire ropes which are used to transport men, material, and ore. Much interesting data on cemented carbides has been published over a period of years which, when classified and pieced together, gives a clear picture of this special branch of powder metallurgy. This is an attempt to present the essential information in an ordered account.THE HARD CARBIDES-THEIR PROPERTIES AND PREPARATIONThe so-called hard or refractory carbides are the carbides of a number of metals which are grouped together in the Periodic Classification. These metals are in groups IV, V and VI. They are titanium, vanadium, chromium, zirconium, niobium (columbium), molybdenum, hafnium, tantalum and tungsten. These carbides have attracted the attention of chemists because of their remarkable properties. They possess very high melting points, and are rather difficult to prepare in the pure state. Their outstanding propertyis their extreme hardness, which they share with certain other carbides, such as those of silicon and boron. In addition, these compounds possess distinctly metallic properties, such as lustre (in fused specimens) and high thermal conductivities.(l)t They are capable of forming alloys in two ways:1. With metals, particularly those of the iron group. 2. With each other (a case of solid solubility).The constitution of these substances is not that of ordinary salts, which obey the usual valency rules, but must be likened to that of certain intermetallic compounds. Actually they are "interstitial" compounds(2), that is, they are formed from the ordinary metallic lattice by the insertion of the relatively small carbon atoms in the interstices.. The energy required to fill the lattice completely is high, and this explains the difficulty often found in obtaining the exact stoicheiometric compound. Thus the carbides can have a range of composition, and can be considered as solutions of carbon in the respective metals.Physical Properties of the CarbidesThe hardness of these compounds is so great that it is difficult to compare the individual compounds on this basis. Becker(l) gives values on Moh's scale, which are not very accurate and are of no great value. Burden(3) has reproduced a diagram by Hatfield which indicates that the cemented carbides are between 1,400 and 2,000 on the Vickers diamond scale. However, the pure carbides are harder, tungsten carbide being about 2,200. Hoyt(4) describes a method of measuring hardness applicable to powdered specimenswhereby the powder is rubbed on a standard block of cemented tungsten carbide under standard conditions, and the rate of wear is determined. The purpose of the paper is to give an introduction to the concept of fatigue and its causes in the mining industry. By knowing the fundamental role it plays, together with its dynamics, can positively contribute to a mine?s safety management system. The difference between physical and psychological fatigue will be addressed with a possible range of causes that could trigger fatigue. There are two main sources of fatigue: firstly, work-related fatigue which is associated with activities at the workplace; and secondly non-work-related fatigue. The shared responsibility between the employer and employee is also discussed as it involves factors that occur both in and outside the workplace. Employers have the responsibility to manage fatigue through using a risk management approach. Employees have the responsibility to ensure they get enough sleep, take sufficient and regular nutrition, are healthy and physically fit and come to work fresh and alert. The impact of the implementation of a fatigue management plan and procedures has the potential to eliminate employee fatigue or its causes, reduce the likelihood of fatigue occurring in the workplace, and counteract the effects of fatigue when it occurs. Factors considered when implementing a fatigue management system include: extended hours of work, shift work, time of day and work design. Fatigue is one of the major role players (either causal or contributory) when it comes to causes of fatalities in the mining industry. Our main challenge in identifying whether fatigue played a role is the fact that it cannot be tested in post-mortems like drug or alcohol abuse. It is an aspect worth understanding and getting an organization sensitive to managing it properly to benefit both organizational as well as employee needs. "SynopsisThe purpose of this paper is to introduce an innovative approach to risk management in surface mining operations, namely, positive risk. Traditionally, risk management focused on mitigating losses (negative). Positive risk, on the contrary, reverses the approach and focuses on exploiting a project’s inherent benefits (positive).The inability to accurately determine project objectives during the project planning phase and the failure to achieve those objectives during the execution phase is a major problem for any project management in the mining environment.The advance of computer aided design models for mine planning enables mining engineers to examine various options within a very short time. Employing positive risk management combined with drivers-based risk management when evaluating these options provides an ideal opportunity to investigate areas for improving the mining project’s profits. Furthermore, harnessing positive risk returns during the planning phase contributes immensely to the successful achievement of project objectives.Mining has inherent business risks, which can appear overwhelming when considering the risks associated with a mining project schedule, cost, and safety or resources, etc. The question is – how to manage risks in a surface mining environment, and what process methodologies, work methods, processes, and standards should be used when considering the surface mining risks. Applying the principles of positive risk management to manage surface mining risks is not only relevant, but definitely beneficial to mining projects and to the mining industry as a whole.It would be beneficial for risk managers and risk professionals to understand the roles of positive risk ‘drivers’, also known as ‘propitious attractors’. Identifying, analysing, estimating, and understanding the propitious attractors, their behaviour and their influence on project risk events helps considerably during the planning and execution phases. The theoretical and practical knowledge of both sides of the risk – the downside risk (negative risk) and upside risk (positive risk) – can add substantial value to any organization when downside risk is adequately mitigated and upside risk is beneficially exploited."

The Ekati Diamond Mine is located on permafrost terrain in CanadaÆs Northwest Territories. The mine rock consists of: diamond-bearing and barren kimberlite; and surrounding waste rock such as granite. The kimberlite occurs in several vertical æpipesÆ that are, or will be, mined using open pits. Early predictions of drainage chemistry at Ekati identified the potential for ARD due to sulfide oxidation from both waste rock and kimberlite. This was surprising for the kimberlite, because neutralisation potentials (NP) are typically hundreds of kg CaCO3 equivalent/t. However, subsequent testwork showed that substantial portions of the NP ædisappearedÆ quickly, apparently due to the unusual non-carbonate mineralogy. In any case, additional predictive work concluded much of the rock was benign and there would be no ARD. Shortly after mining started, ARD appeared from both the waste rock and kimberlite, although a few years passed before the company and its consultants recognised that at least some of the acidic water was ARD. Numerous other processes have been put forward as possible explanations for the remaining acidic drainage, although none have been either confirmed or eliminated. Because: the causes of the ARD and acidity are not known; no causes have been eliminated and more have been added; drainage chemistry was not predicted accurately; and future mining will encounter similar rock. I believe the Ekati Diamond Mine needs high-level assistance to understand current chemistry and to avoid problems with future drainage. Organisations like INAP, MEND3, and universities could provide this assistance.

These investigations were undertaken as part of the Bureau of Mines program for the development and evaluation of high temperature nonmetallic materials. This report consists of thermal expansion and phase inversion measurements by high-temperature X-ray diffractometry on the principal oxides of beryllium (BeO), calcium (CaO), titanium (TiO2 ), zirconium (ZrO2 ), hafnium (HfO2), and thorium (ThO2); all were high-purity commercially available oxides. Thermal expansion values were calculated from unit cell dimensions measured at selected temperatures. Expansion was determined parallel to each major crystallographic axis for the anisotropic oxides: BeO, TOi2, ZrC2, and HfO2. Combined random and systematic errors in the thermal expansion values are considered to be less than 3 percent of the total expansion at 500° C. and approximately 2 percent at 1,000° C. No hysteresis in the expansion curves was noted between heating and cooling cycles. The Bureau's values were compared with published expansion measurements obtained by X-ray diffraction, dilatometric, interferometric, and telemicroscopic techniques. For anisotropic oxides, average linear expansion values were calculated from the volume expansion.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the results of scanning electron microscopic (SEM) studies of the combustion residues of carbonaceous dust particles resulting from explosions and thermal ignitions in laboratory and full-scale mine tests. The dusts studied varied widely in rank and volatility: Pittsburgh seam bituminous coal (35% volatility), Pocahontas seam bituminous coal (16% volatility), anthracite (7% volatility), graphite, and diamond. The most systematic explosion studies were performed in an 8-L chamber with narrow size distributions of Pittsburgh coal dust with surface mean diameters of 2, 22, and 84 pm. Experiments were conducted mainly in air, with some data obtained in 50% 02. Observations of the bituminous coal explosion residues showed particles with rounded edges, particles with blowholes, and some cenospheres. The lower volatility dust residues showed fewer changes from the original, unburned dust. In addition to the experimental studies, results of SEM observations of residues from a mine explosion disaster are reported. Comparison of such residues with those from the laboratory and experimental mine explosions can help investigators determine the extent of dust participation in the disaster and in identifying the possible ignition sources.
