The combined 76th Annual Minnesota Section of SME meeting and 64th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium were held April 8and 9, 2003, in Duluth, MN. This year’s theme was “Stakeholders, Partners in Change.” The meeting included four keynote speakers, technical presentations and a tradeshow. Engineers, executives, mining managers and suppliers from throughout the United States and eastern Canada attended the meeting. Reflecting the theme of the meeting, all agreed that the mine owners, the government, the community and the employees are all “stakeholders.” They must be “partners in change” for the iron ore mining industry to survive in the region. Compared with past meetings, where improved technology was the primary focus, this year the focus was on the dramatic restructuring of the entire industry. As noted by several of the speakers, “This time, the change is not in technology.”

A detailed experimental study of breakage kinetics in a batch rod mill indicates that while the system is inherently nonlinear, the feed disappearance kinetics for the finer sizes and the coarser sizes at high holdups is well represented by first-order behavior. The set of breakage distribution functions was found to be normalizable and independent of particle holdup in the mill. The size discretized initial breakage rate functions were found to be inversely proportional to particle holdup and almost directly proportional to particle size. A linearized grinding model that results from the first-order Taylor's series expansion of the breakage rate expression was found to give good simulations of the mill product size distributions without recourse to any parameter improvement routines. Material transport through rod mills was evaluated by investigating the effect of operating variables on the holdup and residence time distribution of particulate solids flowing through the mill. Identical experiments performed in a continuous ball mill helped delineate the fundamental differences in particulate transport through these two types of mills. Mechanistic interpretations of the observed transport phenomena are presented, and their implications in the context of tumbling mill analysis and design pointed out.

At the exploration stage for new mining projects or for medium- and long-term areas of existing mines (typical of South African gold mines), drilling data is on a relatively large grid. This grid is normally larger than the selective mining units (SMUs). Direct estimates for the SMUs and also of much larger block units will then be smoothed due to the information effect and the high error variance. Any capital-intensive project decisions made on the basis of any of the smoothed estimates will tend to misrepresent the economic value of the project or operation, i.e. the average grade of blocks above cut-off will be underestimated and the tonnage overestimated for cut-off grades below the mean grade of the orebody. This paper presents a direct approach technique for deriving recoverable resources, referred to as localized direct conditioning (LDC), designed to correct smoothing effects and also to provide support corrections.

Construction of foundations for the Skyway Segment of the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge required innovative techniques due to the mass of the structures being inserted and the unique subsurface of the Bay. Twenty of the pier structures required large sheet pile cofferdams. Eight other foundations were installed in open water without cofferdams at the deeper part of the Bay. This narrative will present the initial planning, as well as the stages of installation, for each type of foundation. The first section will discuss foundation constructability modifications made during the initial planning phases of the project. Considerable effort was expended by Caltrans, the owner, T.Y. Lin the designer, and KFM (Kiewit/FCI/Manson) the contractor in modifying the design to assure that required tolerance would be maintained during the installation of the foundations. The final section will describe the steps required for installation including: initial access dredging, installation of cofferdams, preparation required to install the footing boxes, footing box installation, foundation support pile installation, and pile to box connections.

The following data cover a phase in the systematic testing of gold deposits which does not appear to have been specificalIy investigated.In boring either secondary or primary deposits, gold, by virtue of its high specific gravity, will tend to migrate downward, below the driving shoe or bit, and thus cause misinterpretation of value unless final recovery Can be effected after the hole has been bottomed.Unlike fortuitous and non-recurrent errors, due to, say, running ground, "pile driving" or rock fractures, systematic error due to migration may be unpredict.able from operating data alone, and, therefore, result in serious miscalculation of the weighted average upon which the engineer's recommendation is based.Applied to diamond drilling, loss by downward migration appears to have been largely responsible for distrust of sludge assays in the past. On the other hand, although modern practice rightly trends towards an integration of both core and sludge samples in borehole valuation, the possibility of systematic loss must be investigated when using combination graphs such as those of Longyear, Moehlman and WeIler. If the sludge value is incorrect the combination graphs will serve solely to stultify the core valuation.It appears to be axiomatic that: 1. With full core, sludge assays are of minor import.2. With recovery above 90%, differentjal grinding, of the high grade sections may have occurred, and this c!ln be corrected only by the us.e of cOJ;rect sludge valuation.3. With core recovery less than, say, 70%, no accurate valuation is possible without integrating the sludge assay.4. With less than, say, 10% core recovery, the sludge assay affords the sole basis of evaluating a borehole which may have cost many hundreds of pounds.The conditions demanded for reliable sludge valuation have, in practice, been restricted to high quantitative recovery and return of nearly 90% of the drill water. It is submitted, however, that the following additional knowledge is required:1. The nature of gold distribution in the ore.2. The lifting power of the return water column, which can be gauged by the maximum quartz particle, provided that the degree of "hindrance" can be determined.3. That all gold has been cleared from the bottom of the borehole immediately after it has passed through the orebody.The three cases discussed hereunder are offered not only as proof of the thesis, but also in the hope of promoting discussion on the interpretation of borehole values and on methods for saving free gold in the sludge. The fact that two of them cover alluvial boringand the third diamond drilling has resulted in this attempt to reduce the behaviour of free gold to a basis common to all types of boring.

This report, summarizing the results of two studies sponsored by the Bureau of Mines, presents information on the types of mobile machines used in surface coal mines in the United States, and the amount of noise to which miners are exposed. Data consist of a calculated value of the probability of noise overexposure caused by specific equipment. These data are extrapolated to estimate the number of overexposed operators. Bulldozers were identified as the major contributors to noise overexposure, and the report presents results of a Bureau-funded program on the feasibility of providing retrofit noise control on bulldozers.

The Physiographical Features of the Region The Middleback; Range proper, from the Iron Duke in the south to the Iron Prince in the north, extends in a meridional direction for 21 miles, but may well be taken to embrace also the Iron Knob and Iron Monarch prominences so that the total length of the Range is 37 miles.Although no great altitudes are reached, the slopes of the high country are steep and the Range stands out prominently above the peneplaned surface of upper Eyre Peninsula. The Range is built up of sub-parallel ridges at some places, and its continuity is interrupted by transverse breaks or gaps resulting from normal stream erosion and corrosion during earlier periods when precipitation was heavier and streams were more active. Traces of high-level gravels remain on the flanks of Kimba Gap. A former mature stream on the western side of the Range has had its lower reaches blocked by sand and the old stream channel has been converted into an eiongated basin of internal drainage. The sand dunes in this area appear to be practically stationary at present, being fixed by mallee vegetation. Their trend is west-northwest.The relief of the Range is regarded as having been determined primarily by meridional strike faulting and selective silification of some of the beds. La alteración es básicamente argílica en la vecindad de las vetas y propilítica hacia el exterior.

The major threat to the sustainability of Aluminium Industry is its significant contribution to global warming by way of generation of non eco-friendly gases during its production cycle from Bauxite to the finished product. Though reduction measures are taken in control and effective recovery of values from pot room gases, efforts in use of environment friendly additives in the final products production line is warranted. In this line, the present paper describes our efforts in the use of a new generation refining flux which apart from helping in effective removal of alkali metals, reduction in inclusions and ensure a better metal cleanliness shall also aide in reduction of obnoxious gases generated during the metal refining process prior to casting. The aim of the current work was to reconcile the practical results with the old generation fluxes used. Further improvements to bring in a better metal cleanliness will also be discussed.

This paper describes mining and milling methods of the American Smelting & Refining Co. at the Morning mine in the Mullan area of the Coeur d'Alene mining region in Idaho and is one of a series of Bureau of Mines reports dealing with methods and costs of mining throughout the United States. The Morning mine has been described previously in a Bureau of Mines report published in 1930,2/ and the milling methods and costs at the Morning concentrator were presented in a Bureau of Mines report published in 1932. 3/ These reports are supplemented by this publication, which presents data to show the effect of changing times and conditions on a typical medium-size mining operation during the latter part of its history, when costs were rising and production was from increasingly greater depths. The report contrasts two periods in the history of the mine-periods not too far separated in years but considerably different in economic conditions. During the first period (1939) costs of labor and materials were moderate, mining operations were just being transferred from the main shaft to deeper workings opened from the offset shaft, and the operation prospered. During the second period (12 years later) production costs had increased following the national trend in all industry, mining was from greater depths near the bottom of the ore body, and the operation was becoming unprofitable. Mining on the lower levels of the property ceased in 1953.

The Massachusetts Highway Department awarded the Porter Street Outfall Project to the J.M. Cashman Company in November 1991. Timely completion of the Project in one and one half years is critical to the start of the subsequent Third Harbor Tunnel North Approach project. Existing subsurface conditions and the Project's location at Boston's Logan International Airport significantly increases the difficulty of construction. The major contractual work involves relocating a reinforced concrete double box culvert supported on a continuous wood pile foundation. This existing culvert crosses and interferes with the future Third Harbor Tunnel North Approach alignment. Two parallel culverts constructed approximately 20 feet from either side of the future Third Harbor Tunnel alignment replace the existing double box culvert structure. Under the original contract design, approximately 3,100 feet of 14 ft. by 15 ft. reinforced concrete culvert is cast in place adjacent to the west side of the Third Harbor Tunnel and is located in the center of the Airport's main service roadway, Harborside Drive. This culvert is the Porter Street Combined Sewer, PSCS, which handles a combined flow of sewerage from the East Boston community and storm water runoff from Logan Airport. In addition, approximately 2,230 feet of 17 ft. by 15 ft. reinforced concrete culvert is cast in place adjacent to the east side of the Third Harbor Tunnel and is within 20 feet of an active aircraft taxiway and heliport. This culvert is the Bird Island Flats Storm Drain, BIFSD, which handles storm water runoff from the Logan Airport airfield. The existing outfall, on the west side of the Third Harbor Tunnel alignment is to remain in service and is to be connected to the new PSCS and BIFSD culverts. Therefore, a portion of the BIFSD culvert is designed as a bridge to span 128 ft. across the Third Harbor Tunnel excavation during construction.

An improved technique has been developed for the deoxidation of palladium with aluminum which is especially suitable for use in making small castings with an induction-melting and casting machine. The effect of various crucible linings on the efficiency of the residual deoxidizer and accompanying oxide film in protecting palladium against oxidation during remelting also has been examined; the preferred crucible lining consists of zirconia cement. THE objective of this work was to develop a simple method of deoxidizing induction-melted palladium which would be suitable for use by manufacturers of jewelry and other small castings. In a common method of deoxidizing torch-melted palladium a piece of aluminum foil is dropped on the surface of the molten metal. If a film is present, which is usually the case, it must first be removed by oxidizing the molten metal thoroughly because it would interfere with the entry of the aluminum into the melt. Removal of the film is probably facilitated by a mild fluxing action of the silica crucibles which are used for torch-melting. However, removal of an alumina film from molten palladium in the crucibles normally used for induction melting is a much slower process and it became necessary to modify the de-oxidation procedure. In the modified procedure the charge is simply melted and the desired amount of aluminum, crimped to one end of a tungsten wire, is plunged through the film into the palladium and the wire immediately withdrawn. The trace of tungsten which dissolves along with the aluminum can be avoided, if considered objectionable, by using a palladium wire. In view of the persistence of the alumina film under the conditions of induction-melting it also was decided to ascertain the efficiency of this film in protecting palladium against oxidation during repeated remelting and casting. Melting Equipment and Materials The equipment used for melting and casting consisted of an Ecco GC:6, 6 to 8-kva high-frequency converter and an Ecco M34B centrifugal casting machine. This unit is being increasingly used for making jewelry and dental castings and it also has been found useful in making exploratory melts of a variety of nickel alloys, for which purpose it is well suited on account of its speed of melting and economy of material. A description of the machine and its operation will be published elsewhere.' A common palladium jewelry alloy, 95.5 palladi-um-4.5 ruthenium (referred to as "palladium" in the trade), was selected for the deoxidation tests. It was available as melting stock which had been melted in air to free it from oxidizable impurities, and also as clean scrap from previous melts which had been deoxidized with aluminum. The latter was thought to be typical of clean "palladium" scrap to be found in a manufacturing jeweler's establishment and it is also similar to one brand of "casting palladium." By the same token, the oxidized melting stock corresponds to "casting palladium" after the latter has been melted and thoroughly oxidized: Pure aluminum wire (99.9 pet), 0.032 in. diam; 1 in. = 0.036 g. Scrap tungsten wire, 0.014 to 0.020 in. diam. Argon, commercial water-pumped; 99.9 pet pure Experimental Procedure Samples of about 50 to 75 g of the palladium alloy were melted in a crucible lined with a proprietary refractory alumina cement. Some charges were melted in air, others in argon. The oxidized melting stock was melted and solidified a number of times in order to remove as much oxygen as possible before deoxidizing, but this treatment was unnecessary in the case of scrap. To design a blast, one must give consideration to safety, economics, geometry, geology, production needs, and a variety of other requirements. To compare designs requires the time to develop alternatives, analyze, and then improve on them. A number of tools are available to assist with the first set of requirements, however they are poorly integrated. SHOTPlus is a program to improve the efficiency of blasting operations, by combining measurement and blast design tools, and offers the user the time and means to modify designs and explore alternatives.

Spin-fin pipe piles can develop large loads in tension, thus have evolved as a foundation product of great potential. Currently, over 500 spin-fin piles have been used successfully in dolphins, docks, buildings and bulkheads. Spin-fin piles are pipe piles with plates welded near the tip at a batter-in-screw fashion. Thus, as the pile is driven, the pile screws into position. Tests show this pile type to have highly unusual stress/strain relationships, wherein plunging failure is usually never reached either at normal or large deformations. Tension capacity can approach pile capacity in bearing; thus, large reserves are usually available for tension. Tests have been performed on 8-5/8-inch to 24-inch-diameter piles in silt, sand, and gravelly soil, to provide a broad spectrum of data.

To optimise the haulage of the large tonnages produced from stopes in this high production gold mine, an ore pass and feeder system was introduced. This ore pass was designed and developed in 2006 and the plate feeder installed and commissioned soon after. Cavity Monitoring Surveys (CMS) have been undertaken of the ore pass since it was commissioned. The original thickness that was surveyed of the pillar between the ore pass and decline in 2006 was approximated to be 19 m. Throughout its use large blocks of rock were reporting at the plate feeder. This was the first indication that the ore pass was failing somewhere between the tipping level of the 9410 level and the plate feeder at the 9330. Even so CMS surveys were not taken systematically to firstly identify the area of failure or for monitoring. In August 2008 after implementing management systems, large blocks were still reporting to the plate feeder. The decision was made to empty the pass enough to carry out a CMS survey of the area. Subsequently it was discovered that the area of failure was between the decline and ore pass and that since the first survey the pillar thickness had been reduced to approximately 9.7 m. Further management controls were put in place to slow movement of the material and to limit the use of the 9410 tipping level, but this did not alleviate the rate of failure entirely. The results of an initial inelastic numerical model indicated that most of the pillar was damaged and that failure into the decline likely if no changes were made. The numerical modelling predicted that even if material was no longer passing through the ore pass interaction between the voids was unavoidable and would most likely result in instability. The ore pass and plate feeder are an integral part of the haulage system for the remaining life-of-mnie. Two solutions were sought to firstly reinforce and stabilise the pillar between the ore pass and decline and secondly to rehabilitate the ore pass or find an alternate design that could still utilise the plate feeder. This paper summarises the analysis and resulting rehabilitation that was used to accomplish this.

The history of the first twenty years of the high explosives industry in the United States begins as an illustration of the free enterprise system at its best and ends with the industry virtually taken over by a single company: a company which strongly opposed the new explosive material at the beginning of the period. In the world of the late Twentieth Century we could almost compare this history to the opposition of the mainframe computer manufacturers to the introduction of the personal computer, and their later entry into, and attempted dominance of, that market. The key variables in the financial analysis of a mining project include the metal price and the quantities of ore and metal. In general, if the metal price drops, the cutoff grade is increased so as to increase the average grade. This causes recovered tonnages of ore and metal to drop. Discussion is presented of the development of a new method to evaluate the relationship between the cutoff grade, z, the ore tonnage above cutoff, T, and the metal quantity above cutoff, Q. Detailed information is provided on the QTz curves for lognormal and inverse gaussian (Sichel's) distributions. Both these distributions are used as models for the grades in different types of ore bodies, and they are both T-symmetric. The geometry of the QTz curves is simplified, making it easier to work out the impact of minor variation in the parameter values for each distribution

"Engitec developed the EZINEX® Technology some years ago to recover zinc from oxidized secondary sources. This process works at neutral pH and can take into solution any kind of metal, but iron is rejected and remains in the leach residue. Engitec has also developed the FLUOBORATE System, which is able to recover lead and copper from relevant concentrates. Some iron is leached into solution, but it is controlled through a solution purification bleed treatment. In this paper, we present the two above mentioned technologies. They are very different with regards to the chemical environments and the methods used to control the build-up of iron in solution, but both systems are suitable to treat iron bearing feeds.INTRODUCTIONIn the design of hydrometallurgical processes, the most important issues are the water balance, the filtration and the control of impurities. This is particularly important when the process includes an electrowinning unit. Iron has been one of the most problematic elements to remove, especially in acidic environments.Engitec Technologies has developed several hydrometallurgical processes divided in two different electrolyte lines: the Fluoborate Technology for the recovery of lead and copper from primary and secondary sources and the Ammonium Chloride System based on a chloride electrolyte for the recovery of different non-ferrous metals, among which zinc and lead are the most important. In both cases, iron is present in the feed and needs to be eliminated from the solution. It is not a problem for the quality of the metal produced, but when present in solution, it consumes the basic electrolyte reducing its free concentration which is very important both for both the leaching and electrowinning unit operations. Both process systems are very peculiar, the fluoborate case being much more intriguing."

This report contains a summary of analytical research on electromagnetic methods of nondestructive testing of cylindrical conductors. The principal objective is to provide theoretical insight to the operation of electromagnetic sensing of the internal properties of wire ropes that are used extensively in mine hoists. An overall review of past work is also included.

The profitability of gold placer mining operations is determined by more factors than many placer miners recognise until too late. This study is based upon field trips to examine the efficiency of mining and transportation of gravels to a wash plant by bulldozer and truck. At the examined open pit mining operations gravels were washed using water canons, derockers or scrubber trommels. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between unit costs and power requirements for gravel mining and processing. The author conducted a number of time and motion studies at four open pit gold mines, including the Maly Patom Creek, the Nizhny Patom, the Taimendra Creek and the Kadali-Makit in the Bodaibo District, Irkutsk Region and collected and processed field data. As a part of the study significant correlations were determined and empiric regression equations derived between: power requirements (Ep) and unit cost (Cp) for gravel processing; and total power requirements (Et) and total unit cost (Ct) for gravel mining, transportation and processing. Based on the results of the study it was proposed to modify the current mining procedure methods and to replace water cannons at the Maly Patom Creek with a PPM-5 derocker. Introduction of the proposed technology resulted in 2004 in US$385 000 mining cost reduction at the Maly Patom Creek over a short-time Siberian mining season.
