This paper describes certain analytical methods used at the Rosepery Mine and Treatment Plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd., which are not generally in use and may therefore be of more interest than a description of the normal routine methods which are used in most of the mining assay laboratories of the Commonwealth, and which have been published previously.The ore mined and treated at Rosebery is of a complex nature and demands closer control in the concentrating plant than is necessary on some other similar mining fields.It is necessary for the mill shift supervisors to keep constant control on the grade of lead and zinc concentrates produced on their respective shifts, and further, it is essential to maintain an economic compromise between grade of concentrates and the recovery of the particular concent:t:ate. This necessitates a more frequent check on concentrate grade tp.an is provided by the daily assays carried, out by the assay office. Rather than employ trained ,assayers on shift work, "quick methods" of analysis, which could be carried out by the operators, 'were adopted.'In such methods, it is desirable that the necessary manipulation should be reduced to the following:-a. An international prediction event was carried out within the framework of a 30-pile testing program organized in a sandy soil in Belgium (Limelette). That program called upon sev­eral testing methods: static load tests, Statnamic testing, and dynamic testing. This paper provides a summary of received predictions and results obtained from the static pile load tests, which were carried up to failure of the instrumented piles. The comparison between predictions is made using load-settlement curves with reference to the results of the static load tests. The predictions are based on a geotechnical approach using an extensive soil investigation program and a dynamic approach using the dynamic load test data.

Reduction interactions in solid phases are widespread and occur in most complex metallurgical processes. Among these processes, reactions between oxides and carbon have a special importance. The authors conducted experiments for comparison of reduction by different reducing agents of impregnated chromite ores, in which grains of the reducible chromite spinel are isolated from direct contact with the reducing agent by layers of non-ore material. The results of the experiments have revealed that the beginning of reduction is preceded by thermal and impurity order-disorder transformation of the oxide lattice whilst the transformation of the oxide lattice into the metal lattice takes place as a result of removal of oxygen anions from the zone of metal germ nucleation. Since anions are charge carriers, increase of their mobility can be monitored by changes in electrical conductivity of oxides. Respective measurements of electrical resistance of ores of different metals and a number of pure refractory oxides under heating have indicated that the beginning of reduction coincides with the time of drastic (tens of thousands times) increase of conductivity of the oxides. Besides, the temperature of the beginning of carbon-thermal reduction is in line with the Tammann temperature, i.e. the temperature of transition from the predominantly surface diffusion to volume diffusion. Segregation of metals from the oxide lattice occurs as a result of merging of anion vacancies with defect electrons on defects of the oxide lattice. The transformation of the oxide lattice into the metal lattice requires a certain concentration of anion vacancies and inflow of electrons from the reducing agent to the site of metal segregation. Such inflow has no difficulties due to the mixed anion-electron nature of high-temperature conductivity of oxides. Thus, the reduction is not determined by oxygen diffusion, it is determined by oxygen vacancies diffusion whose speed exceeds the speed of oxygen diffusion by orders of magnitude. This determines that the kinetics of reduction considerably exceeds the kinetics of oxidation at similar temperatures since oxidation proceeds by means of mass transfer of oxygen through the layer of the generated oxide.

As part of its efforts to maximize process efficiency and decrease energy requirements in mineral processes, the Federal Bureau of Mines has investigated methods for beneficiating bastnäsite ores from Mountain Pass, Calif. The results of a bench-scale study on the flotation of bastnäsite ore are presented. Flotation at a pulp temperature of 40° to 45°C yielded a cleaner concentrate containing 58.7 pct RE203 at a rare-earth recovery of 67 pct. These results are comparable to those reported for the commercial beneficiation method in which the pulp is heated to boiling before flotation. An attempt was also made to recover a barite flotation concentrate from the bastnäsite rougher tailing. Concentrates containing only 70 pct barite were obtained.

Interlocking H sections with deep webs and high section modulus are being used for cofferdams and shore enclosures where pressures are excessive. The H sections can be as much as a meter deep; they can be used as continuous interlocked wall. A steel saving alternate is spacing the H and driving deep for stability then filling between with shorter interlocking sheet piles. Templates provide for exact positioning.

To predict the spontaneous combustion potential of bituminous coals using a simple expression based on an easily acquired coal property. Background Approximately 20% of underground coal mine fires in the United States since 1978 have been attributed to spontaneous combustion. Spontaneous combustion fires in underground mines are most likely to occur in gob area; and are difficult to detect and to extinguish by direct fire fighting methods. Often, sections of the mine or the entire mine must be sealed for long periods, at a great economic loss to the mine operator, mine employees, and the surrounding community. It is conservatively estimated that the cost of scaling a large mine is about $50 million.

Continuing with the effort of providing new and more effective exploration methods to the mining industry, where direct methods (drilling, cross-cutting, etc.) are not applicable, either for logistical or environmental reasons or because they are costly and sometimes ineffective, we present here a new seismic technique based on full wave recording of 3-D channel waves generated within the coal seam across a longwall. In the past two years we reported the application on In-Seam High Resolution Seismic Reflection (ISHRSR) and In-Seam Seismic Tomography (ISST) to map non-coal inclusions that disrupt the coal seam continuity. In the present paper we present a 3-D In-Seam Seismic Tomography (3-DTSST) method using 3-D channel waves recorded by three component high resolution geophones. The method allows to distinguish longitudinal and transversal components of the channel waves, similar to the spheroidal and toroidal modes for the free oscillations of the earth. The recording of these waves allows a more complete analysis of the free modal vibrations of channel waves, permitting a more complete inversion of the structure of the coal seam through which they travel. The full wave analysis provides additional insights of the detailed coal structure for larger, distances than for the ones previously reported using the one dimensional method. The refinement of the inversion software is also a contribution towards the better definition of the coal seam geometry and structures disturbing them such as sandstone channels, sandstone rolls, partings, mine voids, faults, fractures, etc. The method is illustrated with three case studies where subsequent mining revealed the virtues and limitations. The first example deals with the problem of mapping mine works in one side of a longwall panel which geometry is well known, to verify its applicability to map old mine works. The second example deals with a sandstone body that partially scoured the coal seam withing a longwall panel. The third shows an application of the method to map roof conditions in a longwall panel where this problem critically affected production scheduling and costs

The decay of 222 Rn yields a series of short-lived decay products which become attached to the surface of a plate or wire exposed in a 222Rn-bearing atmosphere. The alpha-activity of two of the decay products, 218Po and 214Po, can be measured by simple counting techniques. This phenomenon may have direct application to uranium exploration. Laboratory studies have shown that: (a) radon decay products can be collected on a wide variety of materials (including various kinds of metals and plastics); (b) activity increases as a function of the surface area of the 'collector; and (c) the collection of the decay products is enhanced by applying a negative charge. The new technique was used in situ to delineate the anomaly above the South March uranium-copper occurrence. A related technique was developed to measure radium in soil samples. The results of both studies compared favourably with those obtained from conventional methods.

Historically, the surface subsidence over underground coal mines has been predicted using empirical profile or influence functions which have little or no connection to the actual mechanics of the subsidence- Without a mechanistic basis, establishing the exact site-specific parameters to use in these empirical methods has been problematic. A practical subsidence predictive method based on mechanics has the appealing capability of allowing the determination of site-specific parameters from fundamental properties of the overburden with minimal field calibration work. This paper presents a case study where a mechanics-based, boundary-element program is used to calculate the surface subsidence associated with several panels of a Northern Appalachian longwall coal mine. The program used in this case study is called LAMODEL, and it incorporates a frictionless, laminated overburden into a general purpose displacement-discontinuity code primarily designed for calculating the stresses and displacements in coal mines or other thin seam or vein type deposits. In this paper. the program is used to calculate both the underground convergence and the resulting surface subsidence at three longwalls. The subsidence results from the model are compared with field measurements and analyzed The results from the case study in this paper demonstrate that the laminated model with calibrated properties can easily provide fairly accurate subsidence predictions and is fairly flexible for fitting measured subsidence. However, additional subsidence predictive case studies are recommended in order to ultimately evaluate the potential of the laminated overburden model for practical subsidence prediction

As time is costly, engineering companies have developed methods, procedures and mechanical equipment to tunnel faster. But the best excavation method will not be able to cope with the time pressure if there is not a reliable backup system. Therefore, the application of belt conveyors for tunnel boring machine (TBM) drives as well as for drill-and-blast driven tunnels assure a quick and smooth removal of excavated soil in order to enhance the efficiency of the tunneling equipment. During the last 10 years, belt conveyor systems have achieved ?state-of-the-art? levels and have become the first choice for muck removal systems in both TBM and drill-and-blast driven tunnels. Because time has become such a key criterion in tunneling projects, it is essential that all equipment is operated so as to derive optimum efficiency and minimize costs. Efficiency also means to think about new tasks for existing technologies.

The kinetics of sulfidization of hematite (Fe203) by H2S gas at various partial pressures have been determined over the temperature range of 170° to 500°C. The process was controlled by thin films of pyrite (FeS2) and troilite (FeS) which were protective and formed diffusional layers. At higher temperatures the thermodynamic drive to form FeS2 decreased, and consequently the rate of formation of FeS, decreased. Conditions for the development of thin layers of FeSz consisting of 10 to 100 atomic diameters are presented. Laboratory flotation results on synethetic ores indicate floatability identical to that of pyrite of normal xanthate flotation. The prospect of high-temperature sulfidization of metal oxides using H2S, S, or other sulfur bearing compounds is intriguing as a potential activation process for flotation since the thermodynamics are very favorable for a large number of systems. If the kinetic parameters are sufficiently well understood it may be possible to provide surface sulfide layers a few angstroms thick, thus imparting normal sulfide floatability characteristics to the oxide. For thin layers the total sulfur pick-up would be small except for very high surface area materials but in most cases this sulfur could be readily removed by roasting if necessary. The general reactions for the sul-fidization of metal oxide MxO, to a metal sulfide MpSq using H2S may be written for the three conditions py > xq; py < xq; and py = xq: A large thermodynamic advantage is obtained in many systems because of the relatively large negative free energy of formation of H,O compared to H,S. For the temperature range 2S° to 1500°C &apos; where AFOis the standard free energy and T is absolute temperature. As is evident from Eqs. 4 and 5, the free energy of formation of H ,0 is approximately 35 to 37 kilocalories per mole greater than that for H,S over broad variations of temperature. For oxide-sulfide systems as outlined above, sulfidization may be expected to occur for the conditions: Groups I and 111: that is, if the terms on the right are more negative than those on the left the reaction is expected to occur thermodynamically. The Tabriz-Urmiyeh Highway shortens the distance of north-western cities of Iran by about 130 km, resulting in improved access and efficient transit between Iran and Europe through Turkey. The highway crosses the Urmiyeh Lake, an inland lake surrounded by mountains. Due to the circulation of salt-water in the lake and the necessity to continue shipping between adjacent ports, a waterway should be kept open. Consequently, a bridge was built to provide access of marine traffic. A causeway bridge had a length of 1,260 m, comprising of 19 spans. In construction of the bridge, more than 400 piles having a total length of 32 km have been driven. For design of piles different methods have been used such as static analysis, dynamic testing, and correlations to in situ tests, such as cone penetration test (CPT). This paper presents construction of bridge substructure, full-scale piling tests, and methods of analysis used in the evaluation of the deep foundation capacity. The presentation includes an assessment of four current direct CPT and one CPTu methods to calculate the bearing capacity of the piles. It was found that the CPTu and dynamic testing are two suitable tools for rapid and optimum pile design and verification.

The recent drop in the value of the South African Rand has resulted in an increased export value for South African coal and has lead to new coal reserves becoming available for mining. Very often these reserves are in close proximity to existing structures and utilities thus calling for stringent blast control measures to keep the risk of vibration, air blast and fly rock damage to a minimum.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of various water mediums on desulfurization and deashing of a coal sample using flotation. For this purpose, experimental studies were conducted on a coal sample containing high ash and sulfur contents. The effects of pH, solid concentration, collector amount and frother amount on the flotation were investigated separately in Mediterranean Sea water, Çermik thermal spring water, snow water and tap water. Flotation results indicated that, when comparing the various water mediums, the following order for the ash content was obtained: snow water < Çermik thermal spring water < tap water < the Mediterranean Sea water. For the reduction of total sulfur, the following order was obtained: snow water > Çermik thermal spring water > Mediterranean Sea water > tap water. When snow water was used as a flotation medium, it was found that a concentrate containing 3.01% total sulfur and 27.64% ash with a total sulfur reduction of 57.06% was obtained from a feed containing 7.01% total sulfur and 41.17% ash.

"The Key Lake uranium mill is located in Northern Saskatchewan. It treats a high grade, complex uranium and metal sulphide ore. The plant and process are in many respects unique, because commercial treatment of this type of uranium ore had never been done before. The process and engineering design was based on extensive laboratory test results. A pilot plant testing stage was omitted because of confidence in the test results and time constraints to bring the plant into production.The bench scale testwork on exploration drill core samples along with preparation of the feasibility study and environmental impact statement were carried out between 1976 and 1979. The contract for detailed engineering was awarded to Wright Engineers of Vancouver in late 1980 and in August of 1981 following a public inquiry, approval to proceed with construction was granted.Construction began immediately, and during the winter the foundations for many of the plant buildings were poured and by the beginning of the following winter the buildings had been erected and installation of equipment began. Despite a six month construction worker strike in 1982, the crushing plant started up in June of 1983 and ore processing commenced in October of that year, approximately 3 months behind the original schedule.This paper describes the mill design and compares the expected performance, with the operating experience. Emphasis is directed towards flowsheet and equipment changes made since start-up, operational difficulties encountered and further improvements envisaged. Auxiliary systems are only discussed where they directly affect mill operation."

Review of equipment, performance, and shaft design plans including head-frames for sinking and forms for lining are given. Also included are comparative data for shafts of 11 x20 ft and 193/4 x 30 ft with 756 and 666-ft depths, respectively. Advantage from curtain wall installation with "slip forms" which warrant consideration for normal lining are outlined. A preliminary review is also made of "chemical grouting" to stop water inflow leakage with Halliburton equipment and service. Two coal mine shafts recently completed in Franklin County, Ill., afford experience and accomplishment to warrant review. These shafts provide access to a tract with a potential recovery of one hundred million tons. This work provided the initial sinking by other than a contractor&apos;s organization since 1918. Four additional shafts required during the interim were sunk under contract arrangement with others. Supervisory contact and inspection afforded experience to govern planning and conduct of the recent work. TEST DRILLING Core test holes were drilled within each of the two shaft locations. Four additional cable tool holes were drilled on a radius of 700 ft from the shaft bottom to determine the coal seam elevations and govern the underground layout plans for each shaft. A graphic log of the hoist shaft test drillhole is shown by Fig. 1. A very soft sandstone was found at a depth of 16 ft. Cored recovery of the sandstone proved much weaker than the overlying compacted sand secured with coring facilities for soil recovery. Gradation from the very soft sandstone to fairly hard material occurred with the next 14 ft, extending to a depth of 30 ft. The weak character within the upper portion entailed need of adequate protection when sinking as described later. A part of the sandstone provided sufficient porosity and permeability to warrant further investigation. Adjacent cable tool drilling for temporary water supply disclosed inflow was limited to 2 gpm with a depth of 40 ft. It was increased to 12 gpm during the next 50 ft of drilling and occasioned subsequent precaution when sinking. General arrangement of facilities for sinking the hoist shaft is shown by Fig. 2. An available steel frame building was used to accommodate the hoist, compressor, shop, and shower or change room. The stiff leg derrick with 90-ft length of boom permitted removal of forms from the wood shop to the storage area or delivery within the shaft. Reinforcing steel and other needs were similarly handled, in addition to headframe erection. The headframe was placed over one end of the shaft to enable passage of forms for lining through the adjacent half next to the stiff leg derrick. Reaction kinetics of solid-state reduction of chromite pellets (laboratory made and industrial) and lumpy ore was investigated by the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) technique. Carbon monoxide was used as the reducing agent, with the presence of graphite in proximity to chromite. The experiments were carried out at both rising temperature and constant temperature in the range of 1450 - 1550°C. Scanning electron microscopy was employed to observe and analyse the structure and composition changes of the chromite samples. For the lab-made chromite pellets, the effects of particle size and bentonite addition on the reduction behaviour were studied. The pellet with smaller particle size gave a higher reduction rate. Bentonite addition had slightly negative effect on the reduction rate. When reducing industrial pellets, temperature and CO flow rate had positive influence on the reduction rate. Reduction of lumpy ore took place slower than reduction of a pellet. In all samples, chromite reduction proceeded longer in the outer part of the sample than in the centre part. The porosity of the chromite samples was determined before and after the experiments. The porosity of lumpy chromite increased significantly during the reduction. However, the porosity of lab-made chromite pellet decreases due to sintering effect. The reaction mechanism is discussed on the basis of experimental results and earlier investigations.

The Ilo Refinery was commissioned in 1975, with a cathode production capacity of 150,000 tpy. In 1994, Southern Perú Copper Corporation (SPCC) purchased the Refinery from Minero Perú SA. Subsequently, in November 1999, Grupo Mexico acquired control of Southern Perú. The anode production facility is located at the Ilo Refinery. A number of effective operating and quality control practices have been developed that have improved anode quality, as well as increasing anode production capacity to 350,000 tpy. These, and other optimization actions have allowed for a current density increase from 213 A/m2 to 275 A/m2, while maintaining current efficiency at 98% and sustaining the high quality of the cathode. The paper will outline the scope of operational practices in the Anode Plant and provide some discussion on the Ilo Smelter modernization project, and the resulting impact on the existing anode plant.

Interest in industrial minerals in recent years has increased to such an extent that it has taken them into the mainstream of the Australian mineral industry. Notwithstanding that time series data on the values of production, exports, and imports show that industrial minerals are overshadowed by metals and energy minerals, their contribution to the national economy is important and more significant than would seem to be indicated by the statistics. Whereas the ex mine value of metals generally includes some processing (at least to a concentrate stage), most industrial minerals are valued at little more than their extraction cost, in addition to which such costs are generally low because most industrial minerals are exploited in low-cost surface operations. Consequently, values of mine production of metals and industrial minerals are not strictly comparable in that values of mine production of metals tend to be overstated Short term growth of the industrial minerals sector is assured because of several new projects already commissioned but not yet reflected in the statistics. Longer term growth is also assured, based on various other major projects that are likely to come on stream in the early to mid 1990s.

This Bureau of Mines report reviews the information presented at the Sixth Mineral Waste Utilization Symposium cosponsored by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, and the IIT Research Institute. Environmental scientists and engineers from nine countries participated in the symposium, which was held May 2-3, 1978, at the Chicago campus of IIT Research Institute. The 56 papers presented on the reclamation and recycling of mining and mineral wastes, municipal solid waste, industrial wastes, and scrap metal are summarized herein.
