Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree The Union Section of Anglo Platinum is situated ±18 km west of the town of Northam on the north-western rim of the Bushveld Igneous Complex. Both the Merensky and UG2 reefs are mined. Support of the Merensky stoping areas with rock bolts is specifically problematic due to the stoping width restrictions varying around 90 cm. The installation equipment of in-stope rock bolts and the effectiveness thereof in the Merensky stoping areas was critically evaluated. In order to do this a background research on the need for better on-the-face support had to be conducted. The need for improving the rock bolt drilling and the equipment had to be investigated and the financial implications and justifications for the improved equipment examined. To conduct the search an overall study was done on the rockfalls and safety aspects throughout the platinum industry in South Africa and specifically Union Section. It was found that most of the rock falls in the Merensky stoping areas of which ± 70% are less than 1.2 m in thickness generally occurs within 4 m from the face and causes ± 60% of the in-stope injuries. Serious shortcomings had been identified with respect to the airleg, rock drill machine and the drill steels used in the drilling of the rock bolt holes. Through experimentation, using a testing frame built for this purpose on surface and with the co-operation of mine staff and suppliers, a number of possible modifications were identified and tested. This resulted in the final product with which it was possible to drill a 1.2 m hole in the hangingwall of the stopes ranging with an angle to the hanging from 90° for a 90 cm stoping width and 67° for a 80 cm stoping width. It is confidently concluded that this system will effectively improve the total face support and result in a substantial reduction of rock falls and consequently the occurrence of injuries and fatalities in the Merensky stoping areas. The installation of rock bolts on the face with the modified drilling equipment will increase the direct support, but the system has a potential of a substantial reduction in the profile stick support density and an increase in productivity in the stoping areas due to fewer occurrences of rock falls. It was finally concluded that effective modifications to the drilling equipment for rock bolt in-hole drilling could be made and the installation thereof in the stope face is adequately justified.

The use of a single tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunnel of approximately 12 to 13 m (40 ft to 43 ft) diameter for transit systems to house both light rail or subway tracks in a stacked configuration is an advanced concept that allows significant savings in construction cost and time while reducing, to a large extent, the negative effects on the environment. This solution, similar to the recently completed Barcelona Metro Line 9, integrates station platforms, train storages, crossovers, bypass tracks, ancillary areas and utility corridors inside a single tunnel. Each of the underground stations consist of a cut-and-cover entrance structure and ventilation shafts, that also serve as emergency exits. The excavations for the station structures and shafts can be done on one side of the street with nominal impact on traffic and utilities.

The choice of a design concept for a bridge foundation is guided by various factors; several of these factors are indeed of technical origin, like the environmental conditions in a broad sense, but others non technical factors may also have a profound impact on the final design concept. The foundations solutions adopted for the Rion Antirion bridge are described and an attempt is made to pinpoint the major factors that have guided the final choices. The Rion Antirion bridge is exemplar in that respect: the foundation concept combines the simplicity of capacity design, the conceptual facility of construction and enhances the foundation safety. The design of these foundations was a very challenging task which required full cooperation and close interaction with all the parties involved: concessionaire, contractor, designers and design checker.

Mining is increasingly occurring near or below the water table. This has led to a higher rate of handling problems associated with increased moisture and increased adhesion, which lead to a higher rate of blockage events within the materials handling chain. Typically, these ores and minerals are known as ‘wet and sticky materials’.Currently there is very limited knowledge and/or methodologies for effective design of efficient materials handling systems when it comes to handling wet and sticky materials. However, there is one major parameter that significantly affects handleability of a wet and sticky ore; namely, its moisture content. Flow property testing has shown that when moisture is reduced, the adhesive properties of the ore are also significantly reduced, thereby increasing ore flowability.The research embodied in this paper investigates the moisture reduction rate through a loose packed bed of iron ore using dry, ambient temperature airflow. A comparison of the predictive capabilities of a proposed drying model to data obtained from on-site experiments using iron ore fines is made. Building on an assumption made by Hukill (1954), a second term has been proposed to account for rewetting effects in the drying process. The applications of optical spectrochemical methods of analysis for determining trace impurities in metals are described, and the need for developing analytical procedures capable of accurately determining fractional parts per million of impurity elements in metals is stressed. Factors which determine sensitivity of detection and means to extend sensitivity levels in spectrochemical methods are discussed. Examples from the current literature illustrate the diversity of spectrochemical techniques that have been applied to the analyses of varied sample types, Many of the methods use preconcentration procedures to increase sensitivity limits. A bibliography containing abstracts of recent methods in included. Optical spectrochemical analysis is based upon the measurement of radiant energy emitted by atoms of the elements to be determined when a sample is subjected to a suitable source of excitation. The behavior of the valence electrons during excitation, usually by an arc, spark, or flame, produces radiant energy of specific wavelengths. This is recorded as spectral line images on a photographic film or plate by the spectrograph; for direct-reading instruments, the spectral lines are detected with photomultiplier tubes. The spectral lines result from the excitation of atoms in the sample. Each variety of atom produces its own characteristic set of lines, thus serving to identify the elements in the sample. Increased concentrations of elements in the excited sample results in increased blackening of the spectral line images.

THE Jacksonville plant of Humphreys Gold Corp., operating under leases from National Lead Co. and Rutile Mining Co. of Florida, recovers rutile, ilmenite, zircon, and monazite from an ancient beach deposit containing about 2.5 pct of these minerals in combination. The location of the plant is unique, being situated about ten miles from the center of Jacksonville, Fla., surrounded by a thriving suburb. Two four-lane highways pass within 1 ½ miles of the plant. An expressway now under construction will pass over the tailing pile, within 500 ft of the mine office. The elevation at the plant site is approximately 50 ft above sea level. This is one of two mines producing titanium minerals and zircon in Florida. Another mine is also operated by Humphreys at Starke, about 50 miles southeast of Jacksonville. High methane emissions originating from the active face areas and from the fractured formations overlying and underlying the mined coalbed can adversely affect both safety and productivity in underground coal mines. Since ventilation alone may not be sufficient to control the methane levels in the longwall mining environment, gob gas ventholes have become a standard supplementary methane control option in many mines. As mines progress into deeper and gassier coalbeds, or as longwall panel size increases, ventilation and gob gas ventholes together may not be sufficient to maintain methane levels within statutory limits. To decrease the risk associated with methane emissions under these circumstances, in-seam horizontal methane drainage is often used to reduce the gas content of the coalbed prior to mining. Horizontal methane drainage borehole completion designs, drilling strategies, and degasification lead times may need to be adjusted for site-specific conditions due to mine design, geology, and the gas content of the coalbed. This study investigates different horizontal methane drainage borehole patterns, borehole lengths, and degasification times prior to and during panel extraction to evaluate their effectiveness in reducing methane emissions using a "dynamic" 3D reservoir modeling of a 38 1-m wide longwall panel operating in the Pittsburgh coalbed. Results of this study showed that dual and tri-lateral boreholes are more effective in decreasing emissions and in shielding the entries compared to fewer shorter, cross-panel, horizontal boreholes parallel to the longwall face. Modeling results showed that after 12 months of pre-mining methane drainage, the average longwall face emission rates can be reduced by as much as 10.3 m3/min and 6.8 m3/min using tri- and dual-lateral boreholes, respectively. It was also shown that if pre-mining methane drainage time is short, it is important to continue methane drainage during the panel extraction to maximize reductions in longwall face emissions since additional face emission reductions achieved during this period can be comparable to pre-mining degasification.

The New Pacific Northwest Baseball Park, now known as Safeco Field, is located directly south of the Kingdome in Seattle, Washington, and will be the new home of the Seattle Mariners baseball team. The location of the ball field is shown on Figure 1, Vicinity Map. The seating capacity is 45,600, and outfield distances are 331 feet in left, 405 feet in center, and 326 feet in right field. The overall dimensions of the stadium are 680 by 800 feet. It is bordered on the east by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad main line. A unique aspect of this ballpark is the retractable roof with a north-south span length of 660 feet. The roof consists of three separate sections that roll on elevated rails running east-west on the north and south sides of the stadium. The soil conditions consisted of near-surface fill underlain with alluvial and Estuarine deposits to depths of 60 to 80 feet. The bearing soils consisted of very dense, glacially overridden deposits. Groundwater is 4 to 7 feet below the ground surface, and the alluvial deposits are subject to liquefaction during a strong motion earthquake.

This report describes the procedures and summarizes the results of an investigation of surface subsidence above caving blocks at the San Manuel mine, San Manuel, Ariz., in order to obtain quantitative information on subsidence and ground movement caused by mining large volumes of ore. This investigation is one part of an overall study of rock mechanics being undertaken by the Bureau of Mines. Attention was given to the improvement of a rapid and precise method of surveying a large number of subsidence pins and cracks in the surface terrain. Photogrammetric methods were used as an adjunct to the triangulation subsidence surveying as well as in ordinary topographic work Maps of various kinds were prepared to show the results obtained. The computation of the survey notes was programed for an electronic digital computer at a saving of time and expense over the use of a desk calculator and trigonometric tables.

"INTRODUCTION Zinc must be of high grade to satisfy the present demand. Even when the amount of premium paid is small, the purer metal as the buyers' preference. The following specifications for spelter were taken from the American Society for Testing Materials for 1927, Part I, pane 524. (The specifications for 1930, p. 582, are tile same.)Another specification for zinc of a much higher grade than any of the above has been established lately by the same society. The committee on zinc die-casting (Proc. Am. Soc. Test. Mat., vol. 31, 1931, p. 263) reached the following, conclusions: I. ""That the purest of zinc is necessary to produce stable zinc-base die castings, and as a result requested specifications for zinc spelter .with total impurities not over 0.02 percent."" Their tests showed that the die castings made of the purest zinc had the least elongation and the greatest tensile strength, and exhibited the least changes with temperature.Still more far-reaching claims are made for the properties of zinc containing over 99.99 percent metal. Zinc foil, for instance, may someday be made as a common commercial product. It would seem likely that the demand for zinc of high grades rill continue and that even purer varieties may be desired. This demand fits in with the modern trend in manufacturing plants of reducing the number of variables to a minimum by using pure materials, and of controlling the processing of metals during their various stages of fabrication by mechanical means instead of by expert laborers."

Fluidized bed roasting of copper concentrates from Mt. Morgan, Mt. Lyell, Mt. Isa, and Peko was performed in a 3 ft 6 in diameter, slurry fed, pilot plant roaster operated under autogenous conditions to produce calcines with desirable leaching properties. A 12 in. diameter, externally heated roaster, provided with a dry feed system, was also used.An account is given of important factors which influence roaster behaviour and performance, and the effects of operating variables on calcine composition and leaching properties are described. Due to copper ferrite formation, a maximum of approximately 50 per cent of the copper in the calcines may be in the form of CuO before the copper leach efficiency falls significantly below lOO' per cent. Recovery of gold by cyanidation of leach residues was consistently high and independent of roasting conditions.INTRODUCTIONIn traditional practice copper is produced by pyrometallurgical techniques when the ,copper minerals in the ore or concentrate are predominantly sulphides, and by hydrometallurgy when the minerals are oxidized. Copper smelting is most suited to large scale operations, and for many years small to medium size mines with sulphide orebodies have been interested ill; alternative processes.Since hydrometallurgical plants (ie. leaching and electrowinning plants) are essentially unitized, they may be scaled down in output without much loss in efficiency or increase in processing cost, and many proposals have been made for the application of this type of process following roasting of the sulphides to render the copper soluble. However, until the advent of fluidized roasting, it was not possible to control the roasting operations sufficiently precisely to produce calcines consistently of the required leaching characteristics.

THE Talisman mine is situated on the Waitawheta (pronounced Wytaffetta) river just above its junction with the Chinemuri (pronounced Chinnemurre) river near Karangahake, NZ. The explored reef-bearing portion of the claim includes the angleformed by the junction of the rivers and extends southwards for slightly over a mile (See Plate V.). The country is mountainous both rivers flowing through precipitous gorges.The trig. station on Karangahake mountain is almost directly above the workings on the Bonanza section and is 1680 ft. above river level, the adit from the gorge giving 1200 ft. of backs measured vertically. The officers of the N.Z. Geological Survey are engaged in a detailed survey of the Waihi district and the rocks of Karangahake are under examination. The rocks of the district are andesites and dacites much altered and silicified. ABSTRACT: Two methodologies for the three-dimensional simulation of the run out of rock avalanches are presented: one based on a granular approach and the other based on a continuum equivalent approach. An evaluation of the possible run out area of the Oselitzenbach landslide (Carnic Alps, Austria) has been carried out applying the two methodologies. The combined use of these two approaches makes it possible a comprehensive assessment of the run out area. RESUME: Deux méthodologies pour la simulation tridimensionnelle de la propagation des avalanches rocheuses sont présentées: la première est basée sur un modèle de type granulaire et la deuxième sur un modèle du continu équivalent. Une évaluation de la propagation éventuelle de l’avalanche de Oselitzenbach (Alpes Carniche, Autriche) a été réalisée en utilisant les deux méthodologies. Les résultats obtenus montrent que la combinaison des deux approches rend possible une analyse plus complète de la phase de propagation. KURZFASSUNG: Für die dreidimensionale Modellierung eines Felsmassensturzes (sturzstrom) werden zwei Methoden, eine granulare und eine kontinuumsmechanische Methode, vorgestellt. Beide Methoden wurden zur Abschätzung der Ausbreitung (runout) der Massenbewegung Oselitzenbach (Karnische Alpen, Österreich) herangezogen. ALTHOUGH the development of the various flotation processes during the last 8 years has been so revolutionary, this development has been, until recently, entirely confined to the separation of the gangue from the mixed metalliferous sulphides.The desirability of finding some method of separating the independent sulphides from such a miXture, by means of flotation, has long been recognized. ThIS need was emphasized when the slimes resulting from the grinding of Broken Hill sulphide ores were for the first time successfully dealt with by the Mineral Separation Company's process on the Central mine. This process proved the practicability of separating the sulphides of lead and zinc as a mixed concentrate from the gangue present in slime. Although this was a very notable achievement, the process has not been generally used, owing to the mixed lead and zinc concentrates resulting from the treatment being acceptable neither to the zinc nor the lead smelters.Although the introduction of eucalyptus oil in minute quantities as an emulsifying agent has simplified the work of the subsequent tabling of mixed sulphide concentrates, rendering unnecessary the burning off or removal of the oil, there will always be a considerable quantity of slimy product too fine to settle on the moving surface of the concentrating machines, and therefore requiring other means for its division into lead and zinc concentrates.

Lord (Geological Survey of Western Australia): During the last few days in Kalgoorlie here we have heard on various occasions of the great job the mining engineers have done persisting against rising costs and increasing salaries without a rise in the price of gold. I think it has been somewhat overlooked that it has been difficult to find additional ore as well. I consider that geologists also should be commended on their action in persisting to search for more orebodies. This goes on in any mining community, but in Kalgoorlie in particular, I believe, over the last few years that it has been more difficult all the time to find additional orebodies and the Companies are calling for higher grades to offset the economic condition. I feel that this paper by Mr. Finucane shows that the geologists have persevered on an idea and discovered that they can find additional orebodies in the calc schist where previously it was thought that these did not occur. This has added many tons to the ore reserves, and although it is not very significant at the moment, the significance will probably improve as more work is done.The whole thing has shown us the importance of economic geology. Mr Finucane has had many years of experience here and he has given us a very able exposition of the economics of ore finding, and there are not many questions that one could pose to him, because most of the information he presented is obviously fact borne out by drilling, underground development and lining up the ore channels. He did briefly touch on ore shoots-the Oroya shoot and several others. It would be very good if we could, and I feel sure...

The theme of this Conference is 'The Future of Mining in New Zealand' to be addressed at a time of deepening economic concern. To ensure the assessment and development of our mineral resources in a competitive, safe and environmentally acceptable way a modest supply of a rare commodity û the professional mining engineer û must be assured. This paper briefly' reviews the history of mining education in New Zealand, discusses relevant overseas academic concerns and actions and discusses recent local trends which have led to a most serious recruitment position in the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of Auckland. Conclusions are drawn and proposals made which may remedy this situation which could have serious economic and sociological consequences for New Zealand.

Details are given on geologically favorable areas and formations and practical methods of prospecting. Some information is given on the staking of claims, what lands are open to prospecting, and methods of securing mining rights. A forecast of the economic outlook for uranium is included. Appendixes give sources of additional information and a list of libraries where unclassified Atomic Energy Commission reports may be consulted. Because the increasing use of uranium by industry has revived interest in prospecting and exploration for this element, the Bureau of Mines has issued this report, which brings up to date and expands the subject matter of a hand- book on uranium exploration and production published in 1956.l

"One of the underlying reasons for the establishment of the United States Bureau of Mines was the desire to promote greater safety in the mining and allied industries. Safety continues to be an important feature in the work of the bureau, and during the fiscal year 1929-30 the Bureau of Mines allotted $387,510 to the safety division out of a total appropriation of $2,249,670 (other than for helium).The safety division personnel consists of 22 engineers, 2 mine safety commissioners, 3 senior foreman miners, 18 foreman miners, 16 first-aid miners, 16 clerks, 10 cooks, and 3 laborers, a total of 90 persons. These safety workers are distributed through the 10 districts into which the United States has been divided for administration purposes. During the year 3 engineers, 1 senior foreman miner, 4 foreman miners, and 4 first-aid miners left the service. In general these men left the service to take up more lucrative positions.The 10 all-steel mine-rescue cars have headquarters as follows: Car 1, Reno, Nev.; Car 2, Raton, N. Mex.; Car 3, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Car 4, Terre Haute, Ind.; Car 5, Pineville, Ky.; Car 6, Pittsburg, Kans.; Car 7, Huntington, W. Va.; Car 8, Duluth, Minn.; Car 9, Butte, Mont.; Car 10, Des Moines, Iowa. There is also a mine-rescue car with headquarters at Juneau, Alaska. In addition, there have been established 11 mine rescue stations as follows: Birmingham, Ala.; Berkeley, Calif.; Seattle, Wash.; Evansville, Ind.; Jellico, Tenn.; McAlester, Okla.; Norton, Va.; Vincennes, Ind.; Wilkes Barre, Pa.; Salt, Lake City, Utah; and Pittsburgh, Pa.Every mine-rescue car and station is fully supplied with equipment and devices for use in case of mine fire or explosion, and at each station is an up-to-date automobile truck. At time of amine disaster the bureau's forces are immediately placed at the disposal of the authorities, State or company, with a view to giving such assistance as may be desired or available.The activities of the safety division at ordinary times are directed largely to securing and disseminating data on safety in mining. Among the numerous studies made, or being made, concerning safety and health in mining are those in connection with the causes and methods of prevention of mine explosions, explosibility of dust and gases, explosives and blasting, haulage, electricity, falls of persons or material, ventilation, dusts, high temperatures, timbering, lighting, machinery, and in fact practically anything which results or may result in acci¬dents of any kind in or around mines."
