The number of persons fatally injured in the California petroleum industry, in 1932 was 24, a decrease of 6, or 20 percent from the number killed in 1931. The decrease in the number of fatalities occurring in 1932 caused the fatality curve of the California petroleum industry to reach its lowest point in 10 years. Changing conditions in the oil industry--reduced personnel, decreased active field development, and curtailed production--have undoubtedly caused a part of this decrease, but continued accident-prevention efforts by the industry have also contributed to the reduction in the number of fatalities for 1932. The Bureau of Mines has analyzed and reported annually the fatalities in the California petroleum industry for a period of 10 years. Figure 1 shows the trend of fatal accidents during that period.

A depth-sensing micro-indentation technique is developed for evaluating mechanical properties of materials at elevated temperatures (to 1200°C). System description and design considerations of the test apparatus are described. Based on Hertzian spherical indentation approach, the micro-indentation test apparatus is capable of determining Young?s modulus and creep strength of test materials with flat, tubular, or curved architectures from room to 1200°C under either air or controlled gaseous environments. Calibration tests were conducted on a H13 Tool Steel coupon from 22°C to 500°C and single crystal Haynes 230 alloy at 1000°C with excellent agreement to the literature values. Indentation creep tests of Haynes 230 alloy were carried out at 1200°C with preliminary results showing good correlation to creep exponents. Further system refinements will be investigated, and additional testing will be conducted.

The mineralogy and microstructure of mattes from the nickel flash smelter at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, have been studied. The flash furnace matte consisted mainly of an intimate mixture of pentlandite and heazlewoodite with some nickel metal. The electric furnace matte was mainly an iron-nickel alloy with subsidiary pentlandite while the converter matte consisted mainly of heazlewoodite with crystals of nickel metal.

"GENERAL STATEMENTThe purpose of this report, which is the first of a series of three covering mines in the Fairmont district of West Virginia, is to give the result of a' study conducted in seal mines to ascertain the nature of the safeguards employed to prevent injury to the workmen from falls of roof and coal. In presenting the subject matter, consideration must necessarily be given to factors, features, and conditions such as method of mining, timber regulations and practices, supervision and natural conditions; and, for comparative purposes, a certain amount of statistical matter bearing upon the relation of fatalities and injuries to their causes, tonnage produced, men employed, days worked, and time lost.Those features and practices found to promote safe protection are summarized and suggestions made for such additional safeguards and practices as appear to give greater protection against injury from falls of roof or coal.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThis study of falls of roof and coal in mines in Harrison County has been conducted by the U. Xstrata Tintaya S.A. opera el yacimiento a tajo abierto y procesa el mineral en dos plantas: Planta Concentradora de Sulfuros y Planta de Lixiviación de Óxidos, donde anteriormente consideraba al mineral mixto complejo como intratable en la planta concentradora, por lo que se le destinó a ser tratado como óxido marginal en la planta de lixiviación. En este sentido, el presente texto describe el nuevo tratamiento al mineral complejo en la planta concentradora. De forma que se busca definir las variables geometalúrgicas del mineral de Chabuca Norte, optimizar los procesos metalúrgicos del mineral mixto mediante la investigación geometalúrgica, así como correlacionar el entendimiento de la geología y alteraciones del yacimiento con los procesos metalúrgicos y crear valor mediante la optimización de la tasa de tonelaje de tratamiento y el incremento del porcentaje de recuperación de cobre en el proceso.

The Permian Cutler Formation in Kane Creek, Utah bears uranium ore in fissure-type vertical veins. This fissure vein formation and its associated host rock bleaching, weak argillic alteration, and base-metal sulfide mineralization along with the development of hydrothermal minerals, a 60 m.y. isotopic Pb/U age, and well-crystallized uraninite's structural control, give evidence of ore deposition in a hydrothermal environment consistent with Laramide mineralization. Mica polymorph studies indicate first, that temperature during the hydrothermal alteration or subsequent ore deposition did not exceed 200°; hence Cutler deposits are classified telethermal; and secondly, that rock alteration and ore deposition are closely related both in time and space, as is seen in argillic alteration sequence. Ore deposition in an alkaline to slightly acid reducing environment is postulated. Ore textures and mineral associations and distributions also indicate that carbonate complexes may have been transported with the deposing ores. Bleached rock formations are not primary strati-graphic phenomena. Bleaching, or changes in ferric iron content, results from a chemical process involving reduction and conversion of hematite to a soluble aqueous ion. Nearby Chinle bedded deposits (Moss Rack sandstone), containing shale lenses, fossil wood, organic debris and minor fractures, overly the Cutler formation. Chinle ores have a single reported isotopic age of approximately 200 m.y. Their chemical environment is assumed similar to that of the Cutler ores, though slightly more acidic. Two genetic, paradoxically divergent interpretations of the bedded deposits are derived from available spectrographic, petrographic, X-ray and chemical analyses. Kane Springs canyon is located southwest of Moab, Utah, south of the Colorado River and northwest of the Lisbon Valley mining district (Fig. 1). Uranium deposits occur along the northeast flank of a Kane Creek salt anticline where two geologic formations bear ore, the Permian Cutler and the Triassic Chinle. The Cutler deposits' fissure vein formation is an unusual occurrence in the Colorado Plateau. The Chinle deposits appear to be of the normal sedimentary type. Associated with the vein deposits are a number of features, including argillic alteration of sedimentary strata. The minerals of these deposits and their associated features have been studied in detail in a two year program entailing both field and laboratory techniques. STRATIGRAPHY A stratigraphic section of the lithologic units in the Kane Creek area is given in Table I.

When perusing articles which treat of mining geology, and when talking with miners on the field, one is at times unable to follow the exact thoughts intended to be expressed, owing to the introduction of occasional technical words, the meanings of which are not thoroughly understood either by the speaker or by the hearer, or possibly by both and laymen at times accuse their technical brethren of attempting to confuse them by employing unusual words in their conversations and writings. Technical words are necessary adjuncts to all arts and sciences. They creep into our language, frequently unnoticed by those who employ them, as being more concise and convenient than longer sentences to explain frequently recurring expressions. In many cases these words give the finest shades of meaning, such as aglomerate and congzomerate, but in others they are extremely ambiguous, for instance black sand, which in some places means ilmenite, in others, chromite, tourmaline, cassiterite, in fact, any black mineral occurring in the form of sand. Then, again, much confusion is cansed by the same rock or mineral having different names, e.g, jlu01'spa'i', which is known as cand, cann, cauk, kawk, blue-John, Derbyshire spar, &c. The multiplicity of local names is of course chiefly found among the more common minerals, which are widely distributed some people have a propensity for using words the meanings of which they understand as little as' they do how to pronounce them. We have heard such persons speak 'of vughs as "bugs," and oxides as "ox hides," and to show that there was no mistake in their intentions, we have seen these and other words written in the same way as they were pronounced. Then, again, some persons, relying more on examples than definitions, get a very vague idea as to what the true meaning of a term may be the word dimite is an example in point, which we have frequently heard applied to any dyke rock that the miner was unable to recognise as granite in fact, he uses the word in a general sense, just as the field geologist provisionally employs the word " greenstone " for certain rocks, until he has an opportunity of thoroughly investigating their character.

The Mitsubishi Process is the sole pyrometallurgical process for the continuous production of blister copper from copper concentrates. Continuous converting originates from the application of the proven technology of a lime-ferrite slag (CaO-FeOX-Cu2O) on the Converting Furnace (C-furnace). Recent improvements on the C-furnace operation have included increasing the processing of recycled materials and the investigation of alternative fluxing agents. However, some minor oxides adversely affect C-furnace operation, with respect to magnetite behavior of the slag, with the most significant impact having been observed with the silica content of the slag. This paper will quantify the impact of silica on the lime-based slag, and discusses the controls that have been identified to sustain continuous converting operation.

This paper will discuss one of the largest construction projects the City of Portland has undertaken. This phase of the Willamette River Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO)project consists of approximately 18,500 ft of tunnel in soft ground, requiring the construction of six deep shafts and jet grout ground improvement. The purpose of the project is to reduce volume of combined sewerage overflows from the drainage areas on the west side of the Willamette River. Bencor-Petrifond-Pacchiosi Joint Venture was awarded a contract to design and construct six deep circular shafts, jet grout ground improvement for three bridges and jet grout ground improvement break-in/outs for some shafts. Of the six shafts the Pumping Station Shaft was the deepest and largest, requiring a permanent ground support system with a deep jet grout ground water cut-off to 335-ft deep. The joint venture used state of the art methods and equipment to achieve its objectives and build the structures through some very difficult alluvial soils to great depths next to the Willamette River. The paper will provide a general discussion of the shaft construction and jet grout ground improvement installed for this phase of the project. It will also discuss some of the technical challenges encountered while effectively managing risk and costs, resulting in a successful project completed in a timely manner.

"INTRODUCTION Slate has earned a high reputation as a roofing material, carefully selected and properly placed it is rainproof, attractive, and extraordinarily durable. Despite there qualities in its favor, the slate industry during the past 30 years has suffered marked reduction in volume of sales. An increase in building construction and general improvement in business will doubtless bring renewed activity, but considerable ground has to be recovered before the industry can become prosperous. Influences tending to dwarf this long-established industry producing materials of world-wide reputation are analyzed briefly in the following pages in the hope that they may be rectified.HISTORY OF SLATE PRODUCTIONFigure 1 shows graphically the rise and fall from year to year of sales of roofing slate since 1885. In quantity, the peak was reached in 1902, and the most serious decline was from 1912 to 1918, sales at the end of this 6-year period being only one third those at the beginning. Unlike most building materials, slate experienced only a slight recovery in volume of sales during the post-war period, 1920-29. The value closely parallels the volume up to the World War period. Subsequently, however, as unit values increased the aggregate value rose sharololy above the volume curve, attaining in 1928 the point reached in 1903, although the Lumber of squares sold was scarcely one third as great. The increased unit value was due partly to larger sales of heavy architectural grades."

ABSTRACT: Some residential areas of the iron basin of Lorraine (in the North-East of France) are affected by noxious gas emissions (under oxygenated, carbon dioxide loaded and radon loaded gas mixtures). Site investigations showed that the gas flow was mainly due to natural thermal air circulation between old mines and the external atmosphere. The main hazards associated with this flow of gas and its potential accumulation in confined volumes within buildings are asphyxiation and intoxication. A further study is in progress in order to better understand the origin of the gas generation within the old iron mine workings. Following the first hypothesis, the carbon dioxide emission is mainly due to the specific hydro-geo-chemical process associating the pyrite oxidation with the acid dissolution of carbonates. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Einige Wohngebiete der Eisenmulde Lothringen (im Nordöst Frankreich) werden von Ausgasung gesundsheitsschädlichen sauerstoffarmen Mischungen, die mit Kohlendioxid und Radon beladen sind, betroffen. Untersuchungen am Ort haben gezeigt, wie diese Gasstroemung von natürlichem thermischen Luftumlauf zwischen den alten Bergwerken und der externen Atmosphäre ausgelöst wird. Erstickung und Vergiftung sind die wichtigste Risiken, die mit dieser Gasströmung und ihrer möglichen Speicherung in begrenzten Lokalen zusammenhängen. Eine weitere Untersuchung wird durchgefuehrt so dass man die Herkunft der Gaserzeugung in den alten Grubenräume besser versteht. Der ersten Hypothese folgend, Ausgasung von Kohlensäure liegt vor allem an dem hydro-geo-chemischen Prozess, der Pyritrösten mit der säuren Auflösung von Karbonate verbindet SCHLÜSSELWÖRTER: Gas, Ausgasung, Bergwerk, Strömung, Pyrit RESUME: Certaines agglomérations du bassin ferrifère lorrain (au Nord-Est de la France) sont affectées par des émanations de mélanges gazeux sous-oxygénés et chargés en certains gaz nocifs (dioxyde de carbone, radon…). Les investigations effectuées in situ ont montré que les écoulements gazeux à l’origine de ces émanations sont liées au phénomène de tirage naturel entre les anciens travaux miniers et la surface. Les principaux risques engendrés par ces émanations de gaz et son accumulation possible dans des endroits confinés sont l’asphyxie et l’intoxication. Une étude est en cours afin d’expliquer l’origine de la modification de l’air au sein des vieux travaux miniers. Les émissions de dioxyde de carbone seraient dues à des processus hydro-geo-chimiques associant l’oxydation de la pyrite et la dissolution de carbonates. The applicability of a stochastic approach to the simulation of gold distribution to assess the uncertainty of the associated mineralization is examined. A practical workflow for similar problems is proposed. Two different techniques are explored in this research: a Direct Sampling multi-point simulation algorithm is used for generating realizations of lithologies hosting the gold mineralization, and sequential Gaussian simulation is applied to generate multiple realizations of gold distributions within the host lithologies. A range of parameters in the Direct Sampling algorithm is investigated to arrive at good reproducibility of the patterns found in the training image. These findings are aimed at assisting in the choice of appropriate parameters when undertaking the simulation step. The resulting realizations are analysed in order to assess the combined uncertainty associated with the lithology and gold mineralization.

Geomechanical conditions of mining operation are determined by varying in time and space mechanical properties and initial state of the rock mass, by geological and technological factors. We define adaptive mining technology as a technology capable of adjusting to changing geomechanical conditions of mining operation. The ongoing research at Moscow State Mining University consisting of laboratory, theoretical, and field investigations aims at the development of theoretical basis and methodology of the system of geomechanical support of adaptive mining technology for the bedded salt deposit in the Urals, mined by room-and-pillar method. This system of geomechanical support is capable of - dynamically assessing mechanical properties and state of the rock mass varying within the panel; - mapping mechanical properties of the rock mass within the panel; - assessing and predicting mechanical condition of load-bearing elements of the rock mass and its changes due to the adjustment of the parameters of mining operation considering the in-situ geomechanical conditions.

This report is one of a series covering the mineral resources of the Nation. It briefly describes most of the known tungsten deposits in Gila, Yavapai, and Mohave Counties, Ariz. Many of the descriptions are taken from the reports of previous examinations by Bureau of Mines engineers, and from Defense Minerals Exploration Administration files. Where a previous examination had been made, and an inquiry disclosed that little or no work had been done since that time, pertinent information from the report was used in this paper with acknowledgment of the source. However, the majority of the descriptions is from field examinations by the author. In the past 3 years (July 1956-May 1959) only necessary annual assessment work was conducted on nearly all the properties described in this paper. There was no active mining on any of the properties examined.

The present computerized mine planning systems use CAD-like and Data Base Management System (DBMS) environments for the handling of numerical, textural, and graphical data. These two environments are usually integrated, that the data provided by the DBMS are linked to any graphical element rendered by the CAD system. The subsidence monitoring, analysis and prediction process should be integrated with the mine design process. It should allow for the assessment of impacts of mining on surface, surface utilities, and structures. It should also provide for the measures to control mining, that will create only acceptable levels of negative impacts on the surface. The common data base, and graphical capabilities of the CAD interface, may be used with great advantage for both systems. The findings of the subsidence engineering modulus should be directly incorporated into the mine design system, and vice versa. In this paper the author suggests guidelines for the development of the comprehensive computer system, able not only to predict the vertical and horizontal components of the ground movement, but also assess the induced surface damages, and costs related to subsidence prevention and compensation.

On the basis of field observation, four principal styles of hydraulic breccia are recognised, and their characteristic features noted. In practice, hybrid styles are most commonly encountered. Numerous examples will be illustrated during the oral presentation, and the potential for definition of a formative environment is emphasised. In one example presented, it is suggested that more than 50 episodes of hydraulic fracturing can be recognised. In all cases at least sane useful conclusions can be drawn in the context of modeling for drill targets.

The effectiveness of an industry?s safety activities can be gaged best by the accident records of that industry. In an effort to gage conditions in the petroleum industry, and with the objective of helping to reduce the number of accidents in it, the Bureau of Mines from time to time has tabulated, analyzed, and published pertinent statistical information3/. These reports have dealt with distribution, causes, and costs and related phases of accidents for various and collective divisions of the petroleum industry in several sections of the country. This type of study aids the personnel of the Bureau in planning the course of its activities in accident-prevention work and gives useful data to persons engaged or interested in the promotion of safety in the petroleum industry, which will aid them in their efforts to reduce the number and severity of accidents. A majority of petroleum operators and ?service" contractors have acknowledged their responsibility to provide their employees with safe working conditions and to their stockholders for greater economic value of invested capital by establishing safety divisions within their respective organizations. Such divisions have a primary duty, namely, to see that properly designed and guarded machinery and working equipment are furnished the employees and that they are trained in the safest practical methods of performing their work. The southeastern phosphate industry is investigated to determine its role in supplying the United States and world phosphate demand. The report shows that the southeastern (Florida, Tennessee, and North Carolina) phosphate industry is the leading domestic and world producer of phosphate rock, The report emphasizes size and organization, production capacity, transportation, and marketing of the southeastern phosphate product, Factors affecting the supply- demand relationship of the southeastern phosphate industry and world phosphate production-consumption relationships are analyzed and related to the southeastern phosphate industry. Past trends are projected and the future role of the southeastern phosphate industry is analyzed to determine its ability to supply the United States and rest-of-the-world phosphate requirements in 1985 and 2000. The projections show that southeastern resources are ample to supply domestic and export requirements at the projected rates of consumption well beyond the year 2000.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines Particulate Mineralogy Unit examined the habits of six zeolite minerals commonly occurring in domestic zeolite deposits. Mineral habit is of interest because current theory on the potential for sarcoma production in test animals emphasizes the size and shape of mineral particles, without regard to composition or structure. A scanning electron microscopic study revealed that, of these six minerals, only mordenite and erionite crystallized in acicular to fibrous habits, The fibrous varieties of these two minerals were characterized by size and shape on the transmission electron microscope, and their dimensions were compared with those of asbestos and amphibole cleavage fragments. When comminuted, these two minerals possess "fibrosity indices" similar to those of amphibole cleavage fragments. One sample, a rare woolly erionite, has uniform widths, large aspect ratios, and a "fibrosity index" similar to those of asbestos.
