Geological Engineering is now a recognized curriculum in most of the mining schools in United States. Graduates of these schools are scattered over the face of the earth, participating in exploration and mining enterprises of diverse character. They are engaged in the mapping of new mineral deposits, in the extension of old deposits, the estimation of reserves, microscopic analysis, and in the direction of exploitation and conservation of man's natural resources. The training of men qualified to carry out these technical phases of modern industry has fallen essentially to the mining schools. For the most part they have met the demand for technically trained men in the mineral industries. Schools Offering Geological Engineering Degree The mining schools have passed through the early stages of their development and at the present offer varied curricula covering the fields of geological engineering, mining engineering, and metallurgical engineering. Usually a B.S. degree is offered in any of these three fields. However, .there has been some tendency of recent date on the part of the Engineers Council for Professional Development to question the validity of a B.S. degree in Geological Engineering. The of this paper is to examine the curricula as offered in the mining schools, to evaluate their engineering content, and to propose minimum requirements for the degree of Geological Engineering in the mining industry. The curricula of eight institutions that offer the degree of B.S. in Geological Engineering or Mining Geology have been studied (Table 1). All except one of these schools are in or near mining districts and occur west of the Mississippi River. They are all state-supported institutions that have come into existence because of the state's need for technically trained men. A graduate from .a mining school is called upon to perform many duties of a technical nature. His initial task may be to make a geological map of a mine or the surface above, but before the map is finished he may be asked to take over the responsibility of getting the ore "on top." And finally, he might find it essential to know how to mill the ore. Certainly this requires technically trained men and the mining schools are essentially the organizations to do the job. The departments of geology in these schools are training geological engineers. Field Of Geology If we were to accept the opinions of some writers, we would be forced to conclude that all geology departments offer only a "dilettante" variety of subjects.

The basic parameters causing outbursts are rock pressure, gas characteristics and the physico-mechanical properties of the coal. The three sets of factors are to some degree interdependent. At Collinsville, the gas characteristics coupled with the physico-mechanical properties of the coal appear to be the major factors contributing to outbursts. The relative importance of rock pressure is uncertain. The following geological parameters appear to be necessary before outbursts can occur. 1. A coal rank greater than 1.2% vitrinite reflectance. 2. Thrust faults with throws greater than 3.Om or strike- slip faults with coal gouge wider than 0.3m. 3. Seam gas emission values greater than 1.1 cm3 /g. Igneous intrusions are the likely source of the carbon dioxide seam gas. Outbursts have occurred at depths ranging from 215m to 265m. They occur at these relatively shallow depths due to: 1. the high rank of coal at the present topographic surface and the high coalification gradient; 2. the relatively high degree of tectonic deformation of the strata; 3. the seam gas characteristics; and 4. the extent of igneous intrusions.

"The size distribution of coal mine dust is one of its most important characteristics because the particle size is known to govern the region of deposition of dust within the human respiratory tract. In addition, dust characteristics, particle settling rate, transportability of the dust and the efficiency of dust control measures are all affected by the particle size. As a result, particle size distribution of the airborne dust in a coal mine is a fundamental property that impacts on the health of underground workers.This paper deals with some basic findings on the size distribution of cool mine dust based upon the results of data collection in six underground coal mines using continuous miners. All airborne dust sampling was performed on development sections using eight stage cascade impactors and permissible 2. O l / min pumps. Samplers locations were fixed in the sections with respect to the continuous miner and roofbolter or with respect to the intake and return airways • Sampling times varied from 45 minutes to 6 hours , depending upon the dust concentration. The first topic of analysis was the test to determine whether the commonly used lognonnal distribution is valid when applied to airborne coal mine dust. Secondly, the conventional method of representing the· distribution using two parameters, the geometric mean and the geometric standard deviation, is questioned. Since almost all size data were found to show some degree of bimodality, the two parameter lognonnal distribution may not represent the total airborne coal mine dust size , quite adequately. Bimodal lognonnal distribution was tested to be a good approximation in the case with two modes in the size distribution.The final topic discussed in this paper is the 'locational variation of the airborne dust size distributions within the continuous mining section. The size distributions varied considerably at the different sampling locations with the continuous miner and roofbolter producing the coarser distributions. Fine size modes in the range of 2 to 4µ m including mostly respirable dust particles were present in almost all samples • Second dust generating sources such as the shuttle car movement were found to be major causes of high respirable dust concentrations in some cases ."

Local accumulation of methane in workings of a longwall is one of the most common causes of mining accidents. This gas has many sources: it may leak from goaf through permeable sealings, or through gaps between roof support sections. This stream is then mixed with ventilation air. In the case of auxiliary ventilation ducts, or free jet fans, we have to consider the propagation of a clean air stream in areas with an air-methane mixture. Therefore, modelling the mixing process of methane with ventilation air is important for determining the hazardous areas and thus to ensure safety. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD), specifically the finite volume method, provides tools for such modelling. However, this method requires validation. For this purpose, we have compared measurements with simulations for selected test cases having sufficient similarity to the present problems. In typical methane explosion hazard areas, such as a longwall, it is difficult to make measurements sufficiently to confirm credibility of 3D CFD simulations. As a relevant alternative, an injector methane drainage station placed in an underground gallery has been selected. The stream of drained goaf methane is entrained by compressed air powered injectors and then mixed with ventilation air. Research in this area does not interfere with mining operations, it can be performed safely in a repeatable way. Flow within the site has many similarities to conditions in mine drifts of the longwall area. Comparative research of measuring the methane concentration distribution in the mine drift downstream injector station, with simulations of propagation of the methane stream, was carried out. For measuring the methane concentration distribution in the mine drift a multipoint measurement velocity system developed at the Strata Mechanics Research Institute was used. For the simulation a finite volume method for turbulent flow of gas mixtures was applied. Preliminary results of comparison are shown as graphs and tables.CITATION:Janus, J and Krawczyk, J, 2013. An extensive series of tests was carried out on a ball mill-rake classifier circuit in the New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd. concentrator. The data were used to develop a mathematical model of the operation of a rake classifier and this model has been used in the simulation of the performance of a ball mill-rake classifier circuit on a digital computer. As a result of this simulation it has been possible to develop a technique for the optimization and control of a circuit which includes these units.

A method has been developed for the prediction of the performance of multi-stage grinding-cyclone classification circuits of any degree of complexity on any ore for a wide range of operating conditions. At present, to establish the characteristics of the ore and the machines in mathematical terms, it is necessary to know the performance of a simple system on the ore for one known feed rate and feed sizing analysis.Further work on the separate identification of the terms defining the characteristics of the ore and the machines may permit the method to be applied directly to the data derived from small scale tests on ores.INTRODUCTIONThe cost of preparing metalliferous ores for concentration processes by, grinding and classification frequently represents a major portion of the cost of treating such ores, and it is necessary both from an economic and a metallurgical point of view that grinding and classification circuits should be operated at their optimum efficiency. It will be realized that the processes carried out in all units in such circuits behave according to physical laws and, if a mathematical representation of the laws applying to each unit could be derived, optimization of the overall process for any given conditions of feed or product may not be difficult.The physical processes in both tumbling mills and hydraulic classifiers are extremely complex and do not appear at present to be amenable to a rigorous mathematical analysis. Each year more than 400 coal miners are injured (fatal and non-fatal) by rock falling from between or around roof supports. Many of these injuries could be prevented by the installation of roof screen (wire mesh). However, many coal mines may be reluctant to use roof screen because of the added cost. The goal of this study was to determine the potential saving in workers? compensation (WC) premiums that could be achieved due to a reduction in rock fall injuries after roof screening. The WC rate-setting methods utilized by IL and KY were investigated in this study. Using actual data obtained from MSHA, national and state WC bodies and individual insurance companies (e.g. average cost per injury, loss cost rate, number of injuries per year, number of injuries preventable each year with roof screening), hypothetical mines (representing two mine sizes: 67 and 150 employees) were constructed with realistic ranges for estimates of injuries and WC premium costs. Using each state?s actual WC rate-setting formulas, total savings in WC costs after a three-year period were determined. Across both states, savings in WC premiums ranged from 1.8% to 14.6% when injuries were reduced by 10% to 20%. Additionally, an economic analysis was performed for an existing mine consisting of 67 employees. For this mine, the annual cost of a roof screening program was estimated at $240,000. If the screening prevented 13 ?struck by? WC claims over a 3-year period at this mine, the reduction in WC premiums alone could pay for the entire screening program.

Using chip sample data and spatial structure parameters from a large mined-out section of a South African gold mine the advantages to be gained from a regular underground borehole drilling programme have been investigated for short- and medium- to long-term planning based on block valuations. The results have been compared with the current position, which relies invariably on the extrapolation of limited peripheral sampling data from raises, gullies or stope faces. Some preliminary work has also been done regarding the implications of such underground drilling on costs used for the present pay limit calculations. The results of the study, though preliminary, show that the net advantage of advance regular underground drilling could be substantial and that a more intensive follow-up research is warranted.

During the 1950's there was a flurry of activity on the design of main ventilation shafts for mines. More recently, a new ana- lysis was commissioned in relation to the multi-shaft, nuclear waste isolation facili- ties currently under design in the United States. This paper presents the major find- ings of that study and should prove of value as a reference in the design of proposed new shafts. An overview of mine shaft resistance introduces the effects of the shaft walls, fittings, conveyances and shaft stations. Each of these is analyzed in turn. A com- pletely new technique is described, which facilitates the estimation of wall resis- tance. The effect of size of a conveyance is quantified and shown to be dominant when the cage occupies more than 30 per cent of the shaft cross-section. The dynamic effects of a moving conveyance are also analyzed.

The internal rate of return (IRR) is one of the most popular project evaluation criteria in the mineral industry, as well as in other industrial sectors. Analysis of its assumptions reveals, however, that this criterion does not function in the way it is supposed to. The search for a new criterion that would reflect the true rate of return (TRR) of an investment project or the true borrowing rate (TBR) of a borrowing project has led to the development of several approaches, yielding, for the same project, generally different values of the interest rate in question. Two of those approaches have been selected as the most representative and practical. Each has been presented in two variants, and subsequently analysed. As a result, it is shown that the various approaches to the TRR/TBR are all consistent with the net present value (NPV) criterion, and that each can serve as an independent project evaluation instrument, provided its assumptions can be regarded in a given situation as realistic enough.

The operation of a series wash thickener-two stage filtration circuit determines the soluble loss in many hydrometallurgical operations A study of this circuit yielded expressions which permit calculation of soluble loss for almost any condition of operation. The soluble loss over a range of the circuit variables is presented to illustrate and evaluate circuit performance, The interrelation of factors affecting filter performance and some of the wash circuit, variables are quantatively described. Filter wash, which is governed by wash zone size, filter pulp level and filter feed pulp density, has the greatest affect on soluble loss. Excepting clothing blinding and flocculation the factors which decrease filter capacity also decrease soluble loss. Repulping with water, under some circumstances, can bean important means of soluble loss reduction. Water for primary filter wash, leach pulp density repulp density and wash thickener underflow density have little effect on soluble loss. The dilution of both o the filter pulps with wash solutions is suggested as a means of reducing soluble loss, and at the same, time, controlling the performance of the filters. Blowback and filter cloth blinding seriously increase soluble loss.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report is an analysis of underground coal mine fire incidents occurring in the United States during the 15 years from 1978 through 1992. The fire data used in this analysis were obtained from Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mine fire investigation reports. Fires were analyzed by year, state, coal bed thickness, mining method, evacuation measures taken, ignition source, burning substance, location, equipment involved, detection method, time of day, number of injuries and fatalities, and method of extinguishment. In all, 164 fires are reported, or an average of 10.8fires per year. The most common ignition source was electricity, the most common burning substance was coal, the most frequent fire location was the belt entry, belt conveyors were the most common equipment involved in fires, and water was the most common extinguishing agent.

"The material flow of urban eco-industrial system includes linear flow, recycling flow, branching flow, converging flow, etc., which consequently lead to the system complexity. Comparing the urban eco-industrial system to ecosystem, it can be concluded that this complexity is caused by the system adaptability. In the system, the interaction and adaptability between the agents themselves and between the agents and the environment stimulates the changes of material-flow mode, which lead to the evolvement from traditional industry to the eco-industry. Focusing on the evaluation of this evolvement process, two material-flow models are established in this paper, one of which is for the system itself and the other for the agents in system. The latter model is applied to analyze the interrelationships among mass, energy and pollutant flow in the iron and steel industry, and to make the direction clear to improve the resource and energy efficiency and decrease the environmental load.1 IntroductionIndustrial system is a subsystem of urban system, and they are interconnected and interrelated through material flow. The industrial development causes the urbanization. But the traditional industrial mode, characterized by high consumption, high pollution and low efficiency, also causes the “urban problems”, and leads to the reduction of resources carrying capacity and the increase of environmental load. Nowadays a lot of researches focus on how to realize the sustainable development of industries and cities. Thus comes the urban eco-industrial system guided by industrial ecology.Regarded as a Complex Adaptive System (CAS), the urban eco-industrial system evolves for quite a long time. According to Holland’s description on CAS, CAS consists of adaptive agents, which interact with the environment and other agents, learn and accumulate experiences, and accordingly change their own structures and motion modes. In this way, the evolution of the whole macro system is improved [1]. The evolution from traditional industrial system to urban eco-industrial system is mainly reflected in the variety of internal material flows which include not only linear flows but also recycling flows. Therefore, to construct models which clearly analyze industrial metabolism, is of great importance to evaluate industrial system evolution.The article is organized as follows: Section 2 describes the urban eco-industrial system. Section 3 presents the system-oriented metabolic analysis model and the agent-oriented one, analyze the interrelations of energy flow, material flow and pollutant flow in Chinese iron and steel industry through the latter model, and indicates the directions of improving the resource efficiency and energy efficiency, and decreasing the environmental load. The use of inferential particle sizing for a closed wet grinding circuit control has been practiced for several years. This paper presents a review of some inferential sizing equations developed for pilot and industrial plants using regression analysis. An analytical development is then presented showing how the general inferential sizing model arises from the nature of the classifier model. The relation between the general sizing model and the individual equations is then discussed.

Open-pit mining is sometimes conducted in areas where the artesian pressures contained in aquifers underlying the pit's floor are great enough to cause floor heave. In order to reduce this pressure several methods are commonly used. One of these methods is a pressure relief well or depressurization wick. The wick consists of a borehole which is filled with gravel and cased at the surface. The wick is allowed to flow freely, thus reducing pressure near its location. The spacing and depth of these wicks can be determined by a simple analytical and graphical technique which considers the weight of material overlying the aquifer and the artesian force within the aquifer. An example of the technique using data from a Colombian coal mine is presented.

Mine operators are often bewildered when trying to correlate blast design parameters to homeowner complaints.

Have you ever had a neighbor complain about a blast one day, but says the next day’s blast was better, even though the Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) increased? How about neighbors that complain about a small trimming shot, but don’t complain about a big production shot? Have you ever reduced the pounds/delay and gotten more complaints ? Mine operators are often bewildered when trying to correlate blast design parameters to homeowner complaints. When complaints come, standard practice is to set up a seismograph in the neighbor’s yard to monitor the blast. Immediately after the blast, the neighbor usually reappears from the house wanting to know the seismograph reading. When told that the PPV was 0.1 in/set, well below damage levels, the homeowner explodes saying “Your machine is wrong”. Perhaps he is right. Understanding why people complain about blasting is not about PPV, it’s all about structural response. People could care less about how much the ground vibrates; they only care about how much their house vibrates. In this paper we will examine the primary factors that control structural response. Through the use of a large array of digital seismographs, the effects of two production blasts on a community surrounding a quarry are studied. The predicted structural response resulting from each blast is calculated at 175 seismograph locations. The predicted response is then correlated to previous research on human perceptibility to vibrations. The results of this analysis and correlation give a better understanding of what the residents actually feel in their homes. The detonations of two single-hole signature blasts are also recorded by the array of seismographs revealing the dynamic characteristics of the geology ‘surrounding the quarry. Once the influence of the geology was understood, blasts were configured to disrupt the natural rhythm of the site through the use of millisecond delays.

A procedure fm the estimation of pilla1 strength is presented where the design of underground coal pillars is emphasized. An analytical approach has been developed, proposing that the effect of end constraints on the pillar strength and the ductile behavior of coal material should be incorporated in the computation of the stability of coal pillars. Bad on this approach, it has been found that end constraint has a significant influence on the pillar strength. The study indicates that when the end constraint is zero the computed strength of the pillar is the same as the unconfiied compressive strength of the coal mass and will not increase with the increase in the width to height ratio. However. when the end constraint is greater than zero the pillar strength will increase exponentially as the width to height ratio increases.
