The 20th Century saw the modern mining industry enriched by one outstanding method of extracting of mineral resources called Borehole Mining (BHM). Mean while, despite its successful track record in wide ranging locales, few specialists are yet aware of this technology. The intent of this article is to introduce borehole mining to a wider spectrum of drilling and mining professionals. The BHM method is based on in-situ water jet cutting of rock mass. On Fig. 1 the schematic of the method is presented. The borehole mining tool 1 is lowered into the borehole 2 and high pressure water 3 is pumped down. At the bottom part of the tool, one portion of that water comes out through the hydromonitor nozzle 4 in a shape of water jet 5 and cuts the material 6 creating slurry 7. The other portion of high pressure water then comes to the hydroelevator 8 (jet pump, eductor) which produces a vacuum. When the slurry reaches this vacuum zone, the eductor sucks the slurry and pumps it up to the surface, where rock parts are separated from water in a tank 9 or a pond and clarified water is pumped down again closing the re-circulating BHM water supply system. The borehole mining tool is suspended on a drill rig tower 10 which allows the tool to rotate and move vertically along the borehole axis. While extracting rock mass, underground caverns (stopes) 11 are created. If necessary, compressed air 12 can be injected to the raising slurry flow to create an airlift effect. Also, a secondary agent 13 (such as oil, foam, etc.) can be added to the stope through the gap between the tool and the casing. As seen from the illustration, BHM is the remote mining method of extracting of mineral resources through boreholes by high pressure water jets.

The performance of seven antiscalants spanning a range of chemistries was evaluated for control of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) formation in gold processing applications. Three preferred chemistries were identified which provided up to 100 percent inhibition in static jar tests when applied at 30 ppm dosage. The three products were further evaluated using a model carbon extraction circuit developed for this application. The test circuit enabled direct measurement of calcium carbonate formed on the carbon from a supersaturated solution under dynamic conditions. The antiscalants lowered CaCO3 buildup on the columns by 15 - 26 percent compared to untreated controls. Impact of the antiscalants on the rate and extent of gold loading onto a carbon adsorbent was evaluated in laboratory carbon-in-pulp (CIP) studies. The antiscalants generated a 25 - 35% increase in gold loading at gold extraction efficiencies up to 65%. On-site testing at a gold processing facility demonstrated that 10 ppm of the preferred antiscalant was able to fully suppressCaCO3formation in thickener overflow water.

This paper expands on the ZECA (Zero Emission Coal Alliance) technology, which is aimed at making coal a sustainable source of clean energy in the near future. The technology proposed immediate capture of carbon dioxide and other pollutants upon generation, thus alleviating their negative effects in the Earth’s atmosphere. ZECA proposes using chemical energy of coal to produce hydrogen; the latter is then used to produce electricity via fuel cells or Hyrogen-Oxygen turbines. In this study, a chemical engineering package, AspenPlus 12.1, is used to simulate the reactor (reformer) in which hydrogen is produced from methane water and lime as part of the zero emission power plant. Thermodynamic conditions, pressure and temperature, are optimized with respect to molar hydrogen production. Under the proposed conditions, molar conversion efficiency, carbon to hydrogen, of 95% is achieved. Further studies are required to model the complete power plant and to optimize it for efficiency.

Editor’s note: This is the second part of a two-part series on longwall mining in the United States. Part one was published in the December 2005 issue of ME (pp. 21-26). It provided a history of longwall coal mining in the United States. It also discussed the technology involved in the productivity gains and operational improvements. Boyd anticipates that U.S. coal production will increase by 61 Mt (67 million st) (6 percent) from 2004 to 2010. A combination of higher surface and underground mine production will be required to meet the projected market demand. Boyd’s projections of coal production by major mining methods are shown in Table 1.

The safety of personnel is the most important matter during a mine fire. However, there is not enough research on a case when a fire occurs near a shaft and the behavior of the fire gas is not well understood. Therefore, a series of experimental study using a scaled ventilation circuit model was carried out. The behavior of ventilation air during a mine fire near a shaft was investigated. The model consists of two vertical shafts, three horizontal ducts connecting the shafts and an exhaust fan from the shaft bottom. The cross section of the shaft and duct is a square of 200×200mm. The height of the shafts is 3400mm. The length of the ducts is 1540mm. The lower duct is set at the same level as the shaft bottom. The middle and upper duct are set at 750mm and 1760mm above the shaft bottom respectively. The airflow rates through the ducts can be adjusted by regulators installed in each duct. The behavior of the fire gas was measured by anemometer, thermometer, and visualized using laser light .The air was ventilated downward in both shafts before the initiation of the fire. Some amount of fire gas of high temperature rose upward gradually along the shaft wall regardless of the downward ventilation after the initiation of the fire. Then the direction of main ventilation air suddenly reversed upward in the shaft. The direction of ventilation reversed in many places in the model and the fire gas reached even the part not anticipated.

We still need to innovate, but it is getting harder. The real price of metals is declining, return on shareholder value is lower than other industries, and there is a shorter-term focus on staying viable in a capital-intensive industry where timeframes for implementation of new technologies can be long (+I5 years). In this environment, the levels of R&D spent by major minerals companies are remaining steady at around 0.2%-0.5% of revenue. This is not large and to remain viable in the future, we need to be smarter about the way in which we do R&D. The mining industry is a knowledge-based industry. Driving down the cost curve demands innovation, which demands knowledge. To be smarter and more effective in our approach to innovation, a new paradigm is required Generating, capturing and using knowledge has evolved from Mode 1 (discipline based and clear distinction between basic and applied research) to Mode 2 (multidisciplinary, team-based approached with flow between basic and applied activities). Mode 2 is now seen to be much more efficient and to deliver better appropriability (Tegart 2003). To survive, we need to innovate, and the best way to do this is collaboratively. Some examples and pointers for the future will be given in this paper. THE CURRENT SITUATION The Rand report and other recent studies have painted a grim outlook for the mining industry. The real price of metals continues to decline (Figure 1) and profit margins remain thin. This is reflected in shareholder returnwhich are well below other industries (Figure 2)-and current management strategies-which reflect something of a "survival mode." While Russia continues to be a worldwide leader in asbestos production, the environmental and health status around Russian asbestos mines is not well known and understood, internationally. A literature review was performed to evaluate the potential impact of Russian mining operations on mesothelioma incidence rates in the Ural region where the majority of the asbestos deposits are located. Asbestos that has been mined in this region includes chrysotile, crocidolite, and anthophyllite forms. The Nicholson-Peto (1986) model was applied to published exposure data and mesothelioma mortality statistics in different cities and villages of the Ural region to estimate mesothelioma potency factors (KM) for the various associated fiber types. It was demonstrated that mesothelioma potency factors, as determined by Berman and Crump (2008), could be used to predict mesothelioma risks of non-occupationally exposed individuals in locations where either pure chrysotile, or both crocidolite and chrysotile, are mined and milled. A mesothelioma potency factor was calculated for anthophyllite that appeared to be higher than expected based on previously published studies. The highest incidence of mesothelioma was identified in a community close to a crocidolite mine. The study confirms the validity of utilizing current risk models for non-occupationally exposed populations near asbestos mining activities where asbestos exposures are relatively low and provides methods of characterizing mesothelioma risk in the former Soviet republics (FSRs).

A study was conducted to assess environmental effects of waste rock piles on water in the Russell Gulch area. Each pile was rated on physical characteristics of proximity to an ephemeral gulch, extensiveness of erosion features, size, presence of vegetation, and presence of a kill zone. Chemical assessments focused on three leachate tests performed on waste rock samples. Ratings were based on pH, conductivity, acidity, and analysis for 31 metals using inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy. The chemical and physical assessment of each site is used to make a rating of each pile on its overall potential to deliver contaminants.

In this study, recovery of copper from solid material (obtained by leaching of chalcopyrite with oxalic acid in the presence of hydrogen peroxide) with a copper oxalate structure was carried out selectively using HCl. The chemical composition of the solid was as 29.3%, 9.7%, and 13.3% for Cu, Fe, and S, respectively. Selective recovery of copper by degrading the copper oxalate structure with a low-solubility product (Ksp = 4.43 × 10−10) was performed by conventional leaching in the presence of HCl. The optimum leaching conditions were determined as 5 M of HCl concentration, 318 K of leaching temperature, 120 min of leaching time, 25 ml/g of liquid–solid ratio and 400 rpm of stirring speed. Under these conditions, approximately 77% of copper and 3% of iron were taken into the solution. According to the characterization of the leach residue that was obtained, the oxalate structure was degraded. Moreover, the results of XRD analysis showed that the sulfur (S) and cubanite (CuFe2S3) phases were mostly observed in leaching residues, and this was supported by the SEM-EDX data. Based on the results, it may be stated that selective copper extraction can be obtained from a chalcopyrite concentrate by a two-step leaching method using a conventional hydrometallurgical technique.

Because shape is an assessment of the three-dimensional form of a particle, it may be described in terms of sphericity (?), which is a measure of how closely a particle approaches a spherical configuration. In this study, Darcy?s law and the Kozeny-Carman model for fluid flow through porous media were applied to packed beds to determine the sphericity (?) of apatite particles. The beds were composed of glass spheres or particles of apatite (igneous from Brazil and sedimentary from the United States) of three classes of size (Class 1: -297 +210 µm; Class 2: -210 +149 µm; Class 3: -149 +105 µm). Glass spheres were used to validate the model because of its known sphericity (? = 1.00). Apatite particles, either igneous or sedimentary, showed very close values for particle sphericity (? ? 0.6). Observations on particle images conducted by scanning electron microscopy illustrated that igneous (? = 0.623) and sedimentary (? = 0.644) particles of apatite of Class 2 predominantly exhibit elongated shape. The close value of particle sphericity (? ? 0.6) showed by either igneous or sedimentary apatite may be justified by the similarity in particle shape.

The Galore Creek Mine project is one of the newest major mining projects underdevelopment in Canada. The project is located in a very remote area of northwester British Columbia and is being developed by Nova Gold Resources of Vancouver. The mine project comprises one of the largest and highest grade undeveloped porphyry-related gold-silver-copper deposits in North America. In order to access the mine site anew 120 km road is planned to be constructed including a 4.4 km mine access road tunnel. Glaciers with heavy snow pack cover approximately two-thirds of the tunnel alignment with a maximum cover of 1,200 m. The size of the access road tunnel is about 50 m2 and has been designed as a large single lane road tunnel to accommodate the transport of large size mining equipment for mine start up and ongoing operations. The rock conditions along the tunnel alignment comprise very strong volcanic rocks. Key services for mining operations will be incorporated into the tunnel comprising diesel and power as well as the concentrate pipeline. Structural portal canopies have been incorporated into the tunnel design due to the risk of rockfalls and avalanches in the portal areas. The mine access road tunnel is a significant and critical-path component to the overall project to provide vehicular access to allow construction of the mine site. In order to meet the expected mine start up date the construction of the tunnel works are to commence prior to any other works at the mine site and will be constructed entirely by helicopter support. Geotechnical investigations commenced in the summer of 2006 with the removal of the overburden materials at the portals to assess bedrock conditions. Tunnel construction from both portals is expected to commence in the spring of 2007. The construction of the mine project is subject to and awaiting environmental approval in the spring of 2007. The mine access road tunnel will be the longest private road tunnel in North America. The key design and constructability issues for the mine access road tunnel project are presented and discussed.

The Washington, DC Water and Sewer Authority (WASA) has implemented facility planning for the Anacostia River Projects portion of a program to bring its Combined Sewer System (CSO) into compliance with federal water quality regulations by 2025. The program includes approximately 19 kilometers (12 miles) of deep CSO storage/conveyance and flood relief soft ground tunnels, construction, vortex drop, overflow, maintenance and air release shafts, as well as near surface diversion structures and conveyances. The Project encompasses major technical and non-technical challenges including completion under a federal consent decree schedule, construction within the confines of heavily developed urban areas, difficult ground conditions, major infrastructure crossings, and close coordination with several major public agencies. This paper discusses the planning stage considerations related to the geotechnical investigation program, discusses obstructions that influenced alignment selection, and provides two examples of preliminary estimates of settlement induced ground movement due to the tunnel and shaft construction.

Na-feldspar (albite) and K-feldspar (microcline or orthoclase) are major feldspar minerals with identical crystal structures and physicochemical properties. Flotation appears to be a unique method of separating these minerals. Fundamental studies on amine/feldspar system in the presence of monovalent salts showed that separation of these feldspar minerals by flotation is possible at certain concentration of monovalent salts in HF medium and natural pH. A comparison between natural pH and HF medium indicates that the latter provides a better selectivity at the expense of higher collector requirement. A general mechanism for both systems involving an ion exchange between the uncommon ions and adsorption of the common ions is proposed to be responsible for creating differences in the charge of albite and microcline unto which amine adsorbs.

The Wyoming Mineral-Conoco Crownpoint Project represents the first time that big hole drilling has been exclusively used to develop totally a privately financed mine below a depth of 1000 feet. Three shafts, one ten feet in diameter and two six feet in diameter, were successfully drilled to depths of 2243', 2188' and 2188' respectively and cased with hydrostatic designed steel casing. The largest shaft is to be used to handle muck and water from station excavation and enlargement of the other two shafts. A reverse circulation system with potassium chloride base mud was used for drilling. The mud was cleaned by settling in steel lined tanks with assistance by cyclone type separators. Deviation was monitored by gyroscopic surveying at 30 foot intervals and did not exceed 16 inches off plumb. Casing was designed to withstand hydrostatic pressures with a 1.5 safety factor to the large shaft and 1.25 safety factor for the smaller shafts. All casing welds were x-ray tested prior to lowering the casing in the hole. Cementing the annular space completed the operation. The total time to mobilize, drill and move off the three shafts was 363 days. The drilling operation was completed ahead of schedule and under budget.

East Side Access (ESA) will extend Long Island Rail Road into midtown Manhattan via 11 km of tunnels, a new terminal station and associated rail support facilities. The hard-rock tunneling in Manhattan will traverse under Park Avenue and some of the most historically and commercially significant real estate in the world. The soft-ground tunneling in Queens will traverse beneath Amtrak’s Sunnyside Yard and the Harold Inter locking, the busiest rail interlocking in North America. This paper details ESA’s program-wide geo-instrumentation monitoring system for obtaining, processing and presenting all geotechnical monitoring data. Data streams will be real-time, such as from automated total stations, and manually read, such as from optical survey instruments and handheld data loggers. All data will be input into a web-based Geo-Instrumentation Data Management System, which will be accessible to project stake holders via ESA’s intranet or via the Internet using remote access controls.

The Storm deposit is a high grade breccia hosted “Carlin-type” gold deposit located at the north end of the Carlin Trend. Storm consists of 3 smaller deposits: 1) 49er Zone, 2) End Zone, 3) Discovery Zone. Structural intersections and favorable stratigraphy at the Paleozoic Popovich/Rodeo Creek formation and Bootstrap limestone formation contact are the primary known controls to gold mineralization at Storm. High grade silica-sulfide breccia occurs in the footwall of the north-south trending, dike filled, Dee fault. This mineralization cross-cuts silicified heterolithic breccia zones localized above the Bootstrap limestone where northwest, dike filled, reverse faults cut this structural-stratigraphic horizon. 40Ar/39Ar dates of 37.57+ 0.34 Ma (basalt dike) and 162 Ma (lamprophyre dike) have been obtained from dikes in the Dee pit which are locally mineralized by the same event as Storm. This paper will focus on the descriptive aspects of the Storm deposits.

Investment in the ferrous sector between 1981 and 1985 will total about $9 billion, or 7.6% of the state budget for capital assets. The money will primarily go to complete the first stage of the Baoshan Iron and Steel complex and to increase steel production by 3 Mt* (3.3 million st) and seamless tubing by 0.5 Mt (551,000 st). Investment in 1983 will be about $3.5 billion, a 28% increase over 1981. Although data on nonferrous investment is less specific, the Chinese announced early this spring that the country's investment would be 2.6 times greater than the average spent during the previous five year plans. Geological surveying will also be stepped up. The Ministry of Geology and Minerals recently announced it will incorporate a search for metal and mineral resources into its second round of oil and gas surveys. The Sixth Five-Year Plan desig¬nates some actual production targets. Steel is to increase to more than 72 Mt (79.4 million st). The country's production of 10 priority nonferrous metals - aluminum (and bauxite), copper, lead, zinc, nickel, tin, antimony, mercury, magnesium, and titanium - is to increase 12.7%. Top priority is to develop aluminum production. Renewed efforts are to be made to develop gold and silver production and to increase rare earth and rare metal production. By April 1983 when the China Nonferrous Metal Industry Corp. was established, some five months after publication of the Five-Year Plan, the goals for nonferrous development had already been upgraded and changed to include: • development priority status equal to that of coal's; • an increase of more than 150% in the 1985 projected production level for the 10 top nonferrous metals (a move from the Sixth Five-year Plan's production increase of 12.7% to one of 34%); and • modification of the top 10 nonferrous metals list to include tungsten, molybdenum, and rare earths. Aluminum, copper, lead, and zinc maintained primary importance, while mercury, magnesium, and titanium were deleted. It is likely that the modification will be taken one step further and titanium will be substituted for antimony. China has already indicated its intentions to stabilize rather than expand its antimony industry, while press reports play up the titanium industry's importance to the country's development. In addition, the China Nonferrous Metal Industry Corp. announced that it expects to register a progressive annual increase of 4% in foreign currency earnings through export. China's nonferrous development efforts, therefore, appear two-pronged. First, the country's efforts will be directed toward self-sufficiency in its four major process and primary metals - aluminum, copper, zinc, and lead - and a number of other nonferrous metals that are in increasing demand by its light industry sector. At present, 96% of China's non¬ferrous consumption is composed of aluminum, copper, lead, and zinc. Substantial portions of that must be imported to meet rising demand. Second, efforts will concentrate on those metals that can be developed the fastest and are in "urgent demand" on the international market. Metals such as tungsten, tin, molybdenum, titanium, nickel, and rare earths will be given freer use of foreign capital and technology to increase production levels and raise quality. Examples of some projects in the area include upgrading the country's carbide industry and developing new high speed and tool steels to meet international standards. Current practice in mining frozen, underground placers is to support the mine openings by leaving remnant pillars, which are kept frozen to maintain their stability. These pillars may be partially extracted depending on mining conditions, but this practice may be risky, and roof falls are common. Instead of allowing the mined-out areas to cave, the extracted entries could be filled with waste material, which would then be frozen, using cold ventilation air. A finite difference model for analyzing the effects of various parameters on the freezing of backfill in underground mines in the Arctic has been developed and tested. The model also accounts for properties unique to a frozen rock mass, including those that change with temperature. Examination of the characteristics of ice-cemented mining waste materials as backfill indicates that with proper engineering control, a backfill system can be designed for use in production mines. The system will allow increased extraction ratio while maintaining the stability of underground openings with minimum heat impact on the surroundings. These simulated results establish the relationships among the strength, the temperature, and the freezing characteristics of a given material. When coupled with site observations these relationships will facilitate the optimal design of ore pillar recovery methods.

The respect of EPB reference pressure during TBM advance and hyperbaric activities, the complete and effective filling of the annular gap between tunnel lining extrados and the excavation section and a well organized monitoring system, to control surface settlements and ground distortion, are items of utmost importance in EPB tunnelling process. The paper describes how these concepts have been applied while excavating in the difficult underground conditions found at Sao Paulo (Brazil) during the execution of the Sao Paulo Metro Line 4-Lot 1. In this project, the annular gap has been filled by two components type, cement grouting. The back feed of the extensive monitoring campaign carried out to check the surface settlements during the excavation and hyperbaric maintenance operations will also be described in the paper.

An environmental management system (EMS) is a key part of a company?s environmental stewardship. Procedures and practices to continually improve environmental performance can provide great benefits in operating the company. Managing site environmental quality data is a key component of this. An environmental data management system (EDMS) is an important element of the EMS for mining and other projects, providing project staff with the information that they need to make decisions that can have a significant impact on public health. Improvements in computers, data communications, and transfer formats have made it much easier to implement an integrated EDMS program for gathering, managing, selecting, and displaying data from the field and the lab. Software now lets users define sampling plans, create files for field data entry, and print Chains of Custody. Laptop and handheld computers facilitate field data entry and may provide automated communication back to the office. Most labs can now create usable electronic data deliverables. QC checks and limit comparisons can be largely automated. The result is organized data that can be efficiently used for reporting, graphing, and mapping, to better understand project issues.
