A major design feature to consider from the initial pioneering works until reaching full mine production of icy regolith at the South Pole of Moon will be the ramp. This will allow the access of equipment and personnel in and out of the excavation area. Although most of the requirements considered when designing a ramp on the Earth are similar, the fact of working in low gravity, with zero atmosphere, the potential exposure to high radiation, extreme temperature levels and drastic changes of illumination, from intense light to total darkness, are new factors to be included. Transversal sections are obtained according to the progression sequence of the production levels, with changes in length, gradient, friction factor of the terrain and curvature when required by the location characteristics and the specification of the equipment utilized. A MATLAB script was developed to calculate all the variables, in order to obtain 3D generated surfaces from the range of possible profiles.

The Jordan Phosphate Mines Company is one of the world's major phosphate rock and phosphatic fertilizers producers (the second largest phosphate rock exporter), with ore reserves exceeding 2 billion tonnes, mainly located in the Eshidiya area. The Eshidiya phosphate deposits, 120 km north-east of Aqaba, are of sedimentary origin (as are all phosphate ore in Jordan). Three exploitable beds (Al, A2, and A3) with variable content of P205, CaO, SiO2, etc., are processed in order to produce 68-70,73-75, and 75-77% TCP grades. The A3 bed, which is characterized as the most siliceous containing 40-48% TCP, requires physical beneficiation using wet scrubbing, screening, and desliming by hydrocylone, followed by anionic conventional flotation to achieve 75- 77% TCP grade. For the last 15 years extensive laboratory and pilot tests (including physical, chemical, and mineralogical studies) were carried out. After operating the industrial plant, certain modifications were deemed necessary to adjust the operational parameters and the final flowsheet, which was followed to obtain the targeted quantity and quality of concentrate.

"NTRODUCTION Women employment in the mining industry dates back to the 19th century. Various parts of the world, for example, India, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States of America had women employed in large numbers. The women’s jobs were primarily manual in nature. Women were used to carry coal in buckets from the coal face and out the mine, and those who worked on the surface plants were used to sort waste rock from the coal product. Other heavy industries, which were traditionally male dominated, for example the military, also had a considerable number of women supporting the war effort. The outbreak of war also caused a shortage of labour, which in turn, necessitated that women were used in various roles during the war. After World War II, women returned to their traditional roles, but had acquired new skills, and had a different outlook to life. The wearing of pants and short hair became fashionable, as a result of being in the army.Various laws were passed which prevented the employment of women underground. Different countries had rules that they believed were in the best interest of women and were of the opinion that the rules somehow were protecting women against the harsh working conditions. In South Africa, post 1994, there has been a shift in thinking in regard to the employment of women in the mines. WOMEN IN SOUTH AFRICA MINING In the words of the Minister of Women in the Presidency, Minister Susan Shabangu, “women must take centre [sic] stage as the country gears itself for the implementation of radical socio-economic transformation policies and programmes in the next five years” (SA Government News Agency, 2014). In as much as some progress has been made in advancing women, more needs to be done in order to realize sustainable benefits in the economy. The emancipation of women is a reality and remains top of the South African government agenda. From the Authors’ experience there are two types of men in the mines. The first group support change and see the value in it. To them, women in mining bring in the diversity and play the complementary role in achieving greatness. There is no fear of job security and humiliation but a great sense of “camaraderie”. The other group continues to enforce stereotypes, which works against the spirit of redressing the imbalances of the past."

INRTODUCTION Annual coal production rose to over 1.03 billion st (931 Mt) in 1990. At the same time the number of mines producing this increased tonnage has decreased over 60% in a 30-year period, from 9230 mines in 1960.1 The great increase in production made possible through continued mechanization requires greatly improved loading facilities just to get coal away from the mine. Also the trend to combine production from more than one mine and cleaning it in a single preparation plant continues. A recent census of US coal preparation plants indicated that 310 plants were in operation.2 In addition to increased loading capacity, storage and blending facilities are more necessary both at the producer and user end. In this climate of rapidly changing technology, any written account is faced with the possibility of obsolescence before its appearance. Thus, this chapter seeks to define the common and current practice in coal loading and storage facilities with the full knowledge that this practice is an ever-moving target. FUNDAMENTALS OF COAL STORAGE Storage of coal is becoming an increasingly important part of coal handling systems at mines, particularly since the advent of the unit-train concept in transportation. In order to take advantage of reduced transportation rates on trainload shipments of coal offered by unit-train movement, operators have found that storage is an economic necessity. In unit-train practice, large predetermined quantities must be loaded in relatively short periods of time, as opposed to conventional practice where coal is loaded at a speed dependent on the production capacity of the mine and/or the cleaning capacity of the preparation plant. Clean coal storage is generally practiced in order to accomplish one, or a combination, of the following objectives: 1. To load out promptly and economically. 2. To facilitate blending in order to even out chemical and physical inconsistencies and to prepare desired products or to attain maximum product uniformity. 3. To store certain sizes whose prices and market demand fluctuate with seasons and to permit shipping in good weather. Coal storage, then, is necessary and desirable, both from production and utilization standpoints. There are, however, several undesirable aspects attendant to the storage of coal, the most important of which are oxidation and spontaneous combustion, changes in properties which may affect utilization of the coal, degradation of coal due to rehandling, and the added cost of handling and storage facilities.

"Mineral deposits require substantial amounts of energy to transport and be processed into usable form and, as such, present a real processing challenge in that the deposits are never homogeneous and orebody compositional characteristics are all over the map. Extracting the desired mineral(s) from the deposit at sufficient profit margin, despite severe fluctuations in market price, requires process automation architecture capable of supporting an integrated enterprise solution. Such an architecture will encompasses the activities of individuals, process units, process areas, plant level activities, mine management and business planning, and accounting systems. Key to the automation process is the aspect of value generation. This article brings together the various requirements for the automation of a mining enterprise and presents the different aspects of how to obtain value across the entire mining operation.Minerals’ processing sites are historically long lived, with 20-year life-of-mine not uncommon and 75 years not unheard of. Considering that hardware technology advancements are introduced every six months, or less, it is prudent to select process automation systems that adhere to “open” industrial standards versus proprietary based systems. In the minerals processing industry, the key to survival is driving the cost of production per unit volume to the lowest possible level and provide enough profit to sustain operations. Control system architecture and business information technology are rapidly becoming important tools in the quest for productivity. Getting key dynamic business performance information at the right time to the right person or process unit is crucial to successfully achieving corporate goals. The process automation architecture selected must, therefore, be able to integrate to the various networking enterprises and business systems.The mining industry is generally known as an extractive industry that is physically oriented with respect to operations and the activities in which workers engage. Large numbers of people performing manual tasks in difficult surroundings, produce variable outputs. But times are changing – and so are industry best practices. While the nature of work still consists of activities such as ore extraction, ore movement, ore concentration, refinement and logistics, automation innovations are starting to change the nature of many of the production steps. The industry has transitioned from requiring more physical activities by workers to more information management, automated control and collaboration within the operation. Humans are good at situational intervention and nonlinear reasoning and do best when empowered with an overall production perspective. Machines and automation are good at repetitive functions, steady state operation, and managing transitions. Thus, a combination of advanced technology solutions, reliable and useful information and full human contributions are necessary to mining operations for value generation."

Petrographic properties of carbonate rocks are useful guides to the utilization of these rocks in SO2-scrubbing systems. High porosity and fineness of grain are thought to be the principal properties that contribute to high dissolution rates of the rocks in the scrubbing liquor. Lake marls and chalks are the major types of carbonate rocks that have these properties. Lake marls are composed mainly of equant grains of calcite (mean grain size generally less than 4 microns) weakly agglomerated in- to larger, porous particles. The marls commonly consist of 80 to 90 percent CaCo3 as calcite and aragonite. Impurities are, for the most part, quartz silt and organic matter. The average pore volume for samples of lake marls (1- to 1.2-mm particles) is about 0.50 cc/g, which corresponds to a porosity of about 57 percent. The mean size of pores in these marls is generally between 1 and 2 microns in diameter. Surface areas of lake marls range from 0.8 to 6.8 m2/g. Chalks have grain sizes and shapes similar to those of lake marls, but they generally have smaller amounts of quartz and organic matter and minor amounts of clay minerals. Pore volumes differ from one chalk formation to another; the 1- to 1. 2-mm particles average about 0.20 cc/g, which corresponds to a porosity of about 35 percent. The mean diameter of pores in chalks tested ranges from 0. 15 to 0.76 micron. Surface areas of chalks range from 3. 2 to 20. 1 m2/g. In the United States lake marls are restricted largely to Pleistocene- age sediments that occur in the states around the Great Lakes. Chalk and chalky limestones are restricted mainly to the Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary strata in the Kansas-Nebraska-Colorado area and in the south- eastern states, from Texas to Florida. Results of laboratory tests of the relative dissolution rates of samples at pH 6 and 44°C indicate that, in addition to many lake marls and chalks, oolitic aragonite, pelecypod shells, and carbonate waste sludges from certain industrial plants also have high dissolution rates.

"Temporary mechanical ventilation is one of the fundamental requirements in guaranteeing a healthy atmosphere in underground construction works in order to protect the health of persons working on the site. It is therefore essential to conceive a system which meets the requirements of the whole of the worksite and for all phases of work which takes into account all aspects pertaining to its design, dimensioning, justification, installation, maintenance and validation. In doing so, the ventilation design and the selected apparatus to be installed shall meet with the degree of health protection and the quality of air of the worksite as defined by the legislation in force in France, through limiting the concentration of the different pollutants associated with the site activities. Consequently, when presenting a mechanical ventilation project, all of the participating parties and especially the contractor make a commitment to guarantee sufficient volumes (or airflow rates) of fresh (non-polluted and oxygenated) air and extracted (polluted) air in order to meet these limitations and maintain them in all conceivable site configurations. This article sets out the most important aspects of the implementation of a ventilation project from the initial design stage through to its application, discussing French legislation, ventilation principles, calculations and techniques with regards to underground construction sites. BASICS OF VENTILATION Mechanical ventilation studies are concerned with all of the site workstations and work phases which are sources of pollution and apply to all zones of the underground worksite with the goal of maintaining the concentration or composition of this pollution below the permitted levels and comply with the following three basic principles which are complementary to one another without being in contradiction. •,The first principle consists in eliminating or limiting as much as possible the emission of any polluting, irritant, or dangerous substances, by specifying appropriate construction techniques and equipment (use of electric motors, combustion engine equipment: filters, tanks, catalyzers, use of less polluting explosives, damping down dust with water or wetting products, damping down and diluting certain gases using water mists). •,The second principle is designed to capture residual polluting substances emitted close to the source in order to prevent them from spreading into the worksite atmosphere (extraction ventilation with ducting up to the source – upstream of the extractor fan – and use of downstream filters before expelling the polluted air to the exterior). •,The third principle involves accompanying the capture of the pollutants with additional blowing ventilation specific treatment of substances dissipated by and distant from the source of pollution (acceleration of the drift air flow in order to confine dust and better capture it, supply ventilation with ducting in order to dilute the gases emitted and discharge them to the exterior)."

INTRODUCTION In any mining operation all possible steps should be taken to increase efficiency. One area for improvement is mine planning and design, particularly in the area of equipment selection for room-and-pillar systems. Be- cause of the availability of a wide variety of face machines, a fair degree of selectivity can be exercised in the choice of equipment for a particular job. However, this choice must be made on the basis of quantitative facts and forecasts related to the mining application. The purpose of this section is to develop and analyze the details of the mining process. Some specific areas studied include the relationship of system design to productivity, suboptimization as a result of equipment changes, and measurement of system performance. The plan of work leading to a quantitative description of these study areas is based on the growing interest in total system design using simulation as an analytical method (Manula, 1963). CHARACTERISTICS OF PRODUCTION OPERATIONS FROM ROOM-AND-PILLAR SECTIONS For a given mining method, raw production in a given section of a mine is primarily dependent upon the coal seam thickness, roof and floor conditions, methane emission, the mining methods, and the man-machine element. Average section production varies from 300 to 800 st per shift for conventional and continuous mining in high seams and from less than 100 to 300 st per shift in low seams. Since the reject varies from 0 to 40%, these figures must be decreased by the appropriate percentage to reflect the amount of clean coal mined. Personnel requirements per production section per shift for the various methods are listed in Table 1. Table 1. Production Personnel Method No. Method No. Conventional 12-1 5 Longwall 9-14 Continuous 9-1 2 Shortwall 9-12 MINING VARIABLES To evaluate the constraints and interrelationships for various mining methods, it is necessary to categorize the variables which underlie system production potential. Seven critical independent variables which determine production can be identified and categorized (Suboleski, 1978) : Seam Height The five categories are as follows: less than 36 in.;. 36 to 55 in.; 55 to 100 in.; 100 to 180 in.; and greater than 180 in. Floor Quality Floor quality ranges from : Excellent: Smooth, hard, grades less than 1 to 1 % % , and dry. Good: Smooth, soft but dry, with grades less than 3 % . The floor will deteriorate, but cautious operation can prevent it. There may possibly be heaving at some later time. Fair. Soft and damp. There is occasional interference with equipment operation; requires the use of four-wheel drive shuttle cars; ruts with regular use, and may have adverse grades of 5 to 7%. This may be coupled with slippery bottom and/or occasional steep rolls. Poor: Soft and wet. Requires blocking of the bottom to support equipment. There are frequent steep rolls and grades in excess of 7%. Roof Quality Roof quality ranges from : Excellent: Men are able to work under the unsupported top during the initial production cycle if legally permitted. Good: The roof is bolted on a 4 x 4 or 5 x 5 pattern with short bolts (442 in.) or <seam height if the seam >42 in., or requires posting with no bolts on a 4 x 4 or 5 x 5 pattern. There are no falls. Average: The roof is normally bolted on a 4 x 4 or 5 x 5 pattern, but with long bolts (>seam height or >6 ft.). There are infrequent minor falls or there may be an excellent roof which is difficult to drill. Fair: This type often requires spot bolting in addition to the regular pattern or bolting with planks. The roof conditions require shorter than planned cuts, or narrow cuts. Poor: This type requires bolts plus crossbars and posts, or installation of yielding supports or truss-type support. It is almost certain to fall if this is not done. Methane Liberation This ranges from none detected to low (no buildup at the face, even with minimum ventilation requirements) to moderate (the curtains must be extremely tight and tubing close to the face or methane will build up to 1 % during the loading of the car) to high (methane will build up to 170 if the miner is operated at the normal rate, even with proper ventilation). Hardness of Coal Coal hardness falls into the following categories: Soft: Soft coal is easily cut by a continuous miner. A plow could be used by longwall. Average: Coal of average hardness could be easily cut by a miner, and a shearer would be used in the longwall. Moderate: Moderately hard coal causes difficult cut-

During the early 1960&apos;s, a method was developed for refining sand from the Arkansas River to produce a feldspathic product that was proposed for use in making colorless glass. Because of the need for chemical uniformity, a cooperating glass manufacturer specified certain ranges of percentages for each chemical constituent of the sand. These specifications were met by fulfilling the single requirement that alumina vary by no more than 20.1 percent from the specified value. This translated to a total variation of only about 1 percent in the feldspar content of the mixed quartz-feldspar products. Because the feldspar was lighter than the quartz, the average density of refined sand varied depending on composition. Densities, determined to five significant figures, of several samples were correlated with their chemical analyses, and the correlation could then be used with density determinations to more reliably indicate compositions than by chemical analyses only. The effects of several variables on the composition of refined sands were studied. There was a regular variation in the proportion of feldspar with screen size. A series of samples with their natural size distributions were more nearly uniform in composition than the same sands after screening and recombination. The screening and recombination process was done so that the sands had identical size distributions. Variations in the refining showed little effect on composition. A pile of flow-back sand from a construction sand washer was found to be severely segregated. However, samples taken from many points in the river near the sand plant and from the flow-back discharge pipe over several weeks very nearly met the uniformity specification. If care was taken to avoid segregation either before or during processing, it should be possible to meet the uniformity specifications for a feldspathic glass sand.

Simultaneous alkaline pressure oxidation and sodium cyanide leaching treatments on a pyritic ore from Mulatos Mine located in Sahuaripa, Sonora, Mexico, were carried out. Mineral characterization, agitated leaching, hot cyanidation under atmospheric pressure conditions, simultaneous moderated pressure oxidation and leaching, and kinetic tests results are shown. The modified variables were temperature, pressure, and cyanide concentration. Characterization indicated that pyrite was the main mineral. Simultaneous pressure oxidation and leaching experiments were conducted in a temperature range of 40 to 80 °C, an oxygen pressure range of 87.5 to 200 psi, and cyanide concentration range of 0.8 to 1.2 weight percent in a 2-L Parr pressure reactor. Dissolution rates of 81 to 86 percent were achieved under the following conditions: 87.5 psi, 80 °C, 0.8 weight percent NaCN and processing time of one hour.

The rare earth elements (REE) which include the 15 lanthanide elements (Z = 57 through 71) and yttrium (Z = 39) are so called because the elements were originally isolated in the late 18th and early 19th centuries as oxides from rare minerals. Most REE are not as uncommon in nature as the name implies. Cerium, the most abundant REE (Table 1), comprises more of the earth&apos;s crust than copper or lead. Many REE are more common than tin and molyb¬denum, and all but promethium are more common than silver or mercury (Taylor, 1964). Promethium (Z = 61) is best known as an artificial element, but has been reported in very minute quantities in natural materials. Lanthanide elements with low atomic numbers are generally more abundant in the earth&apos;s crust than those with high atomic numbers. In addition, lanthanide elements with even atomic numbers are two to seven times more abundant than adjacent lan¬thanides (Table 1) with odd atomic numbers. The lanthanide elements traditionally have been divided into two groups: the light rare earths (LREE), lanthanum through eu¬ropium (Z = 57 through 63); and the heavy rare earths (HREE), gadolinium through lutetium (Z = 64 through 71). Although yttrium is the lightest REE, it is usually grouped with the HREE to which it is chemically and physically similar. The REE are lithophile elements (elements enriched in the earth&apos;s crust) that invariably occur together naturally because all are trivalent (except for Ce+4 and Eu+2 in some environments) and have similar ionic radii. Increase in atomic number in the lanthanide group is accompanied by addition of electrons to an inner level rather than the outer shell. Consequently, there is no change in valence with change in atomic number, and the lanthanide elements all fall into the same cell of the periodic table. The chemical and physical differences that do exist within the REE group are caused by small differences in ionic radius, and generally result in segre¬gation of REE into deposits enriched in either light lanthanides or heavy lanthanides plus yttrium. The relative abundance of individual lanthanide elements has been found useful in the modelling of rock-forming processes. Comparisons are generally made using a logarithmic plot of lanthanide abundances normalized to abundances in chondritic (stony) meteorites. The use of this method eliminates the abundance vari¬ation between lanthanides of odd and even atomic number, and allows determination of the extent of fractionation between the lanthanides because such fractionation is not considered to have taken place during chondrite formation. The method is also useful because chondrites are thought to be compositionally similar to the original earth&apos;s mantle. Europium anomalies (positive or negative departures of europium from chondrite-normalized plots) have been found to be particularly effective for petrogenetic modelling. REE were originally produced in minor amounts from small deposits in granite pegmatite, the geologic environment in which they were discovered. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, REE came mainly from placer deposits. With the exception of the most abundant lanthanide el¬ements (cerium, lanthanum, and neodymium), individual REE were not commercially available until the 1940s. Since 1965, most of the world&apos;s REE have come from two hard rock deposits: Mountain Pass, United States, and Bayan Obo, China. GEOGRAPHIC DISTRIBUTION OF REE DEPOSITS More than 70% of the world&apos;s REE raw materials come from three countries: China, the United States, and Australia. China emerged as a major producer of REE raw materials during the 1980s, while Australian and United States market share decreased dramatically (Fig. 1). Table 2 gives recent annual production figures along with estimated reserves by country, and Fig. 2 shows loca¬tions of significant REE mining. MINERALS THAT CONTAIN REE Although REE comprise significant amounts of many minerals, almost all production has come from less than ten minerals. Table 3 lists minerals that have yielded REE commercially or have po¬tential for production in the future. Extraction from a potentially economic REE resource is strongly dependant on its REE miner¬alogy. Minerals that are easily broken down, such as bastnasite, are more desirable than those that are difficult to dissociate, such as allanite. In general, producing deposits contain REE-bearing min¬erals that are relatively easy to concentrate because of coarse grain size or other attributes. Cost reduction programs can focus on total cost or unit cost, but unit cost is usually the principal objective. The production cost per unit is: [Unit cost = Total cost Production volume] Consequently, any activity that reduces the total cost or increases the production volume will reduce the unit cost. Production volume is increased by (1) maximizing the availability of the production equipment and (2) maximizing equipment performance during periods of operation. Most operations managers routinely focus on volume because the factors influencing volume are generally well understood and congruent with the managers&apos; technical skills. In fact, production volume (as a percentage of maximum achievable capacity) is widely recognized as one of the most significant measures of operational performance.

Eicosanoids and cytokines produced by the alveolar macrophage (AM) are key mediators of pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis resulting from occupational exposure to mineral dust. In order to determine if eicosanoid and cytokine production are altered by chronic inhalation of coal dust, we compared the production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), thromboxane A2 (TxA2), leukotriene B4 (LTB4), interleukin 1 (IL-1), tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) by cultured AM from non-smoking normal human volunteers and coal miners. Inhibitors of eicosanoid biosynthesis were administered to AM from coal miners in order to determine if a link between eicosanoid and cytokine production exists in these cells. Basal PGE2, TxA2, TNF and IL-1 production by AM from active miners was increased compared to AM from normal volunteers. However, the production of these eicosanoids and cytokines by AM from former coal miners was reduced compared to control AM. Administration of the cyclooxygenase inhibitor, suprofen, and the lipoxygenase inhibitor, nordihydroguaiaretic acid, reduced PGE2 and TxA2 production in miners&apos; AM but had no effect on LTB4, IL-1 or PDGF production. Specific inhibition of thromboxane synthase by UK38,485 was associated with a significant reduction in TNF production in active miners&apos; AM but had no effect on PGE2, LTB4 or IL-1 production. The prostacyclin analogue ZK96,480 also specifically inhibited TxA2 production in active miners&apos; AM. The results of these studies suggest that coal dust exposure is associated with alterations in AM eicosanoid and cytokine production which may be relevant to the development of pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis. In addition, the lack of effect of inhibitors of PGE2 biosynthesis on IL1 production in miners&apos; AM suggests the production of these intercellular messengers may not be linked in AM chronically exposed to coal dust.

To address the problem of grade estimation in a general three-dimensional shape and the uncertainty associated with the estimate, the technique of jackknifing/block kriging short-cut is proposed. A new estimator called jackknife kriging is introduced first. Through the jackknife variance, a confidence limit for the reserve grade estimate can be calculated. Unlike the kriging variance, which is more a measure of data configuration and is independent of data values, the jackknife variance reflects the true variability of the data. This approach provides a simple way to set a confidence level for global estimation of resources.

The packed column flotation cell is an awesome separation device. Virtually unknown and untested, the packed column flotation cell is one of the ten most important developments in mineral processing of the 21st century. Though experimental and industrial data is limited, it is clear that the packed column flotation cell is two to three orders of magnitude better than the conventional flotation cell and one to one and a half orders of magnitude better than the open column flotation cell. With the modern packing taking up less than one percent of the packed column, column blocking does not occur. For a packed column operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the estimated mean time between failures (MTBF) is one hundred thousand hours or roughly twelve years. With no moving parts, lower maintenance costs, lower power consumption and inherent operating stability, the packed column is a powerful separating machine. Because there is little meaningful data for comparing the packed column to the conventional flotation cell and the open column flotation cell, much of the material presented in this paper are guesstimates. They are disinterested guesstimate made by the authors after extensive theoretical work and reviewing the known facts. In the authors&apos; opinion, no available data contradicts the guesstimate. The authors expect that there may be errors as large as three hundred percent. Even three hundred percent errors will not change the conclusions of this paper. The packed column flotation cell is a formidable separating device. To understand the problems of comparing the three types of flotation cells, consider the fact that the three cells may have different modes of separation. One of the authors, Meloy, believes that in the conventional cell, the primary particle separation takes place in the liquor with secondary separation taking place in the froth, while for open column flotation, all the separation takes place in the froth. However, he believes that in the packed column a large part of the separation may take place on the walls of the packing. If this is true, not only is the method of modeling each type of cell different, but the method of particle selection in the cell is different. This means that one type of cell may be better at differentiating between two different types of particles. There is a growing body of literature on open and packed column flotation. "Underground refuge alternatives require an air source to supply breathable air to the occupants. This requires pressure relief valves to prevent unsafe pressures from building up within the refuge alternative. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mandates that pressure relief valves prevent pressure from exceeding 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi), or as specified by the manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure when a fan or compressor is used for the air supply. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tested a variety of pressure relief valves using an instrumented test fixture consisting of data acquisition equipment, a centrifugal blower, ductwork and various sensors to determine if the subject pressure relief valves meet the MSHA requirement. Relief pressures and flow characteristics, including opening pressure and flow rate, were measured for five different pressure relief valves under a variety of conditions. The subject pressure relief valves included two off-theshelf modified check valves, two check valves used in MSHA-approved built-in-place refuge alternatives, and a commercially available valve that was designed for a steel refuge alternative and is currently being used in some built-in-place refuge alternatives. The test results showed relief pressures ranging from 0.20 to 1.53 kPa (0.03 to 0.22 psi) and flow rates up to 19.3 m3/ min (683 scfm). As tested, some of the pressure relief valves did not meet the 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi) relief specification.IntroductionThe Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) was enacted in the United States in the wake of three mine explosions/fires that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the MINER Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning, adoption of new technology, training and education, and mine safety standards enforcement (U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration, MSHA, 2006). Section 13 of the MINER Act specifically directed the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of refuge alternatives for underground coal mines. This mandate culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to Title 30 of the Code of Federal Regulations (30 CFR) mining health and safety regulations, requiring underground coal mines to provide mine emergency refuge alternatives and associated components, to provide a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such refuge alternatives can be either self-contained mobile units or built-inplace facilities. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for MSHA approval of refuge alternatives and their components, and among these provisions are numerous criteria for providing a safe breathable atmosphere under positive pressure within the refuge alternatives. One specific criterion for maintaining a safe refuge alternative atmosphere requires the inclusion of an air pressure relief valve that will activate at a maximum of 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi), or at a pressure above mine atmospheric pressure, in the refuge alternative, as specified by the manufacturer when the breathable air is supplied by a fan or compressor (MSHA, 2008)."

Miners really are an optimistic bunch. Even with the dark clouds hanging over the global industry, mining professionals still turn out in droves at industry conferences. In February, more than 7,200 professionals attended SME?s Annual Meeting in Denver, CO, a record. And the following week, more than 30,000 people converged on Toronto, ON, Canada for the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) meeting. For many small and junior mining and exploration companies the PDAC conference is a place to find potential investors in their projects. The Investors Exchange attracts several hundred companies, each showing off their properties to the many money types who wander the hall during the four-day conference.

The economics of a mineral-processing circuit is dependent on the numerous sensors that are critical to optimization and control systems. When a sensor goes off calibration, it results in errors that can have a severe impact on plant economics. Classical statistical approaches fail to detect when errors are “subtle,” unless they grow and become large enough to be “gross,” whereas methods based on signal processing and artificial intelligence fail in dealing with the complexity of process fluctuations. Due to the sheer volume of sensors, undetected errors are not remedied until the next calibration, which on average are a year apart across all industries [1]. This research aims to detect such subtle errors (2 percent bias) in shorter time spans of about a month — rather than wait for errors to grow — using innovative data-mining techniques and algorithms.
