Introduction This section of the text presents a general review of the different types of concentrate marketing contracts. Too often the marketing strategy is ignored in the design phase of the project and the producer is left to the mercy of the buyer. Many items such as concentrate grade, impurity levels and moisture content of the concentrate my enhance, or severely restrict the producers ability to make a profit it. Close attention should be paid to the design of the concentrator which can improve the quality of the concentrates, thus the ability to increase the rider of potential buyers can be enhanced. Difficult at best, is the position of the miner who only has one outlet available for its production. Obviously, the trade offs must be evaluated. For example, concentrate grade vs recovery and grind/filtering capacity vs moisture of the concentrate all must be weighted against freight cost to a potential buyer. In addition, the above considerations must be weighed against the capital cost to the miner. This chapter is intended to highlight important articles that are included in short and long term agreements and to give a new miner/producer some insight into hat my or my not add value to the product. Unless the miner sells the product directly to a consumer such as a gold, or silver producer, or to a large enough operation that has a totally intergrated system to make a finished product, most miners are forced to sell to buyers who ultimately will refine and market the product. Types of Contract Agreements There are many types of contract agreements just as there are colors in the rainbow, however, most contracts fall into three basic categories. (1) Smelter Schedules: Designed for the small producer, the odd lot of concentrate, smelter flux and precious metal ore. Albeit custom smelters are becoming fever by the day, because of pollution control requirements and financial difficulties, most remaining custom smelters have a smelter schedule. A smelter schedule is a posted list of charges and conditions that the smelter will buy material from a seller. Smelter schedules exist for copper, lead, zinc, silver and gold (Handbook for Small Mining Enterprises, Montana Bureau of Mines). (2) Short Term Custom Contracts: Large mine producers frequently use Short Term Contracts where the seller has the buyer frame a contract that is tailored to the sellers’ production. Silane coupling agents have been used in the filler industry for years. One particularly unique feature is the ability of the coupling agents to enhance the adhesion between filler and polymer matrices. This paper will review the use of coupling agents for polymer matrix composite applications and discuss a new approach to coupling agent chemistry, namely, direct formation of a silicon-carbon non-hydrolyzable linkage between glass and coupling agent. The grafted silane monolayers were evaluated by infrared spectroscopy to ascertain their surface coverage and relative stability. Finally, composite specimens were fabricated and their mechanical properties were compared with traditional silane coupling agent treatment.

The major source of water for Southern Nevada is Lake Mead. However, the existing pump station located on Lake Mead is inadequate for one of the fastest growing areas in the United States. In order to keep up with the increasing demand for water in Las Vegas, a parallel system is being constructed. The intake for this system is being constructed approximately 68.58m (225ft) below the surface of Lake Mead. The lake tap consists of installing casing and secant piles to support the shaft collar, excavating a 21.34m (70ft) deep intake shaft, and installing a3.66m (12ft) diameter steel liner.

Although the health effects of airborne dust in underground coal mines are well recognized, a lack of understanding remains about the fundamental mechanisms of dust generation, transportation, deposition and dust-lung reaction. This study was intended to contribute to the understanding of dust transportation and deposition mechanisms in underground mine airways. Data from in-mine experiments carried out under controlled conditions in a straight section of a longwall panel with three different airflow velocities and two different types of coal dust (bituminous and semi-anthracite) were used to determine the turbulent deposition rate of dust particles. Measurements of ambient dust concentrations and deposition along the mine airway were obtained and the total dust deposition velocity (rate) was calculated. The deposition velocity of turbulent diffusion was estimated based on the experimental data and theoretical equations. The effects of airflow velocity, particle size, particle density and distance from the dust source on gravitational, turbulent and total dust deposition are discussed along with related conclusions.

INTRODUCTION The use of specialty chemicals In mining Is an Important consideration In determining the economic efficiency of a floatation plant. The plant metallurgist would like to maximize the recovery of valuable minerals while maintaining an acceptable grade product. The direct cost of the reagents, while significant, Is only a part of their economic effect. Reagents determine the flotation rates and the selectivity of the mineral separation. In flotation practice, mineral selectivity can be achieved through the addition of various reagents that can control the wettablllty of a particular mineral In the flotation pulp. The reagents which will generally optimize the flotation process are commonly classified Into three distinctive categories: collectors frothers and modifiers. Large tonnages of metal sulphide concentrates which are the source of most of the common base metals are produced economically by fairly standard flotation techniques. The advent of modern technology coupled with the necessity of processing finely disseminated and complex ores of low grade has Increased the need for utilization of non traditional and high selective chemicals reagents for the economic recovery of metals and raw materials. Mining operations in developing countries continue to progress at a rapid growth as many countries mine and process both metallic and nonmetallic ores. The total mine production of base metals, precious metals, Iron ores and coal In developing countries In Africa, Asia and South America has been much higher as compared to the western world production In terms of tonnage and dollar value. Global capital Investments In mining during 1991-95 Is $ 55.1 billion and It Is anticipated that the development of new and specialty reagents may be concentrated In the processing of aluminum , copper, precious metals and Industrial minerals with special reference to potash, phosphates, kaolin and silica sands.(1) The challenge for the design and development of new specialty chemicals Is dependent on Its cost performance and environmental acceptability. Information on the theory and application on the development of mining chemicals has been reviewed In several conference proceedlngs,(2-4) publications(5) and also discussed by several Individual authors.(1,6-10) These publications serve as a comprehensive reference source on the reagents used In several flotation processes. This paper discusses the present trend in the use of specialty mining chemicals In diversified mining operations on several mineral systems with particular reference to sulfide ore systems. The necessity to expose these specialty chemicals through aggressive marketing techniques In mining operations In many developing countries Is also presented. SPECIALTY CHEMICALS Specialty mining chemicals, like other specialty chemicals, share common business characteristics that transcend geographic boundaries. They are manufactured 1n a few selected areas, generally expensive relative to commodity chemicals, shipped and compete globally and usually require specialized knowledge for proper use. Specialty mining chemicals are relative newcomers to chemical markets. The vast majority of mining chemicals are derived from products that are less than two decades old. Traditional collectors and frothers have been available for a considerably longer time. The emphasis on adding value to existing products and byproducts Is responsible for several characteristic features of the mining chemicals business. Most raw materials for these chemicals are related to oil and gas byproducts, chemical refineries, pulp and paper mills and all chemical manufacturers. Until the last several years these operations were located In Industrialized countries, while a significant number of mining chemical users were In developing countries. Therefore International trade In mining chemicals developed through agencies or agents in each particular country.

"Foreword by Ren BryceSenior engineer, Freeport-McMoRan, Oro Valley, AZ, USAThe eighth annual Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) student poster contest was held in February at the national SME Annual Conference & Expo in Denver, CO. A total of 33 students presented their work at the poster competition. The competition started in January when the students submitted a one-page abstract for judging. In February, they prepared and presented a poster that explained their research. A panel of judges went to each student and listened as the students explained their research in five minutes.The students worked hard at their research and then set aside time to complete all the necessary steps to enter the competition. The MPD recognizes the effort required to enter and as a result, provides monetary rewards to all participants. The first-place winner receives $1,000; the second, $500; the third, $250; and the fourth through seventh, $200. All remaining students receive $100. All of the students also receive a complimentary ticket to the MPD Luncheon. As in past years, there are separate levels of competition for undergraduates and graduates.Graduate winnersKaustubh Shrimali won first place for researching “The influence of starch in amine adsorption by quartz in the reverse flotation of iron ore.” Venkata Atluri received second for studying “The effect of polysaccharides on bubble attachment at talc surfaces.” Jennifer Galvin placed third for investigating “A novel approach to alkali pug bake for the extraction of rare earth elements from monazite concentrate.” In the fourth through seventh places were Amy Richins, Sumedh Gostu, Brett Carlson and Chris Vass.Undergraduate winnersNestor Santa earned first place for exploring “Copper recovery from waste printed circuit boards.” Cassidy O’Connell received second place for conducting “Performance analysis of CMC in high talc copper sulfide flotation systems.” Catalina Vanegas won third place for examining “Cyanidation tests and pretreatments to recover gold from a refractory ore in Colombia.” Kylie Boyce, Michael Archambo and Pritam Sinha were in the fourth through sixth places.Everyone benefits from attending the student poster competition. "The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act Public Law 109-236) was passed by Congress in response to three major underground coal mine accidents in the United States that claimed the lives of 19 miners. The Act resulted in substantial changes in the underground coal industry relative to the use of technology for mine escape, rescue, disaster response and other areas where the lack of these technologies contributed to the fatalities caused by these tragedies. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the MINER Act, which makes it an opportune time to reflect on the events that led to its passage, the changes that have been made since then, and the work that remains to be done.As discussed below, the last decade has demonstrated tremendous cooperative efforts among mining operators, technology innovators, labor, The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and state regulators, resulting in substantial improvement of the technologies used for escape and rescue and noteworthy progress toward meeting many of the goals of the MINER Act. While the MINER Act and this article pertain primarily to coal mining, many of the technologies are equally applicable to any underground mining and have already found some acceptance outside of coal.Technology gaps targeted by the MINER ActThe MINER Act addressed several technology challenges:• Problems with donning and switching between self-contained, self-rescuers (SCSRs).• Poor visibility in smoke.• No wayfinding assistance for escape from the mine.• Limited breathable air supply.• Inability to locate trapped miners.• Inability to communicate with trapped miners.• Failure of mine seals."

The Meadow River No. 1 Preparation Plant, owned by Sewell Coal Company, a subsidiary of the Pittston Company, was commissioned in the spring of 1974. The plant is designed to process 400 TPH of 5" x 0 raw coal. The 5" x 114'l fraction is processed in a Heavy Medium Vessel with the 114 x 28M reporting to Deister Tables for cleaning. The 28M x 0 fraction is cleaned in flotation cells, with the froth going to clean coal vacuum filters and the tailings to a static thickener where the underflow is reclaimed on Refuse Filters prior to disposal. The noise dosage a worker receives is determined by the ratio of the length of time the worker spends in a particular noise environment divided by the noise exposure in that particular environment. If the worker is exposed to several different sound levels, his total dosage would be the sum of each of the individual dosages. The equation for determining the dosage is: [ ]

A dust concentration meter has been developed with Australian coal industry support for the measurement of total airborne dust concentrations capable of causing explosions in underground coal mines. The instrument, The University of Queensland Dust Meter (UQDM), measures the effective dielectric constant of a mixture of coal dust and air that is drawn between the plates of a capacitor, the capacitance of which is measured by a ratio-transformer bridge and synchronous detector system. This technique measures small changes in capacitance to approximately 1 part in 106. The unique design of the capacitor sensor permits a precise volume of coal dust and air mixture to be sampled. This arrangement overcomes difficulties inherent in optical dust measurement. The meter is portable, battery powered, incorporates data logging and has intrinsic safety approval. The operation of the meter is discussed. The system is designed to monitor dust concentrations along a coal mining face and provide concentration profiles leading to the development of suppression strategies. If data from underground tests are available, the meter's potential to contribute to establishing safe working conditions underground will be discussed. Other areas of potential application of the measurement technique are also examined.

Investigations have been conducted at Chino Mines Co. into the effect that SAG mill recycle material (critical size) exerts on SAG mill throughput and specific energy requirements. Tests were conducted on laboratory, pilot, and plant scales to evaluate the merits of alternative treatment options. Removing critical size material from the SAG mill circuit has been shown to improve new feed rates by 84% with a reduction in specific energy (kWh./t) of 88%. Test results obtained to date are presented.

Special attention must be considered in the production of high-grade rare earth products, such as mixed rare earth oxalates or carbonates. In the main minerals used industrially, the rare earth elements (REEs) are finely associated with impurities like calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), aluminum (Al), thorium (Th), uranium (U) and phosphorus (P). Most of these impurities must be removed to avoid losses of rare earth oxides (REOs) as well as to prevent product quality degradation and low operational performance in the downstream steps of solvent extraction or ion exchange. The present study aims at investigating the conditions required to precipitate REEs, either as rare earth oxalates or carbonates, from purified rare earth sulfuric liquor with low Al3+ and UO22+ concentrations and very high Ca2+, Mg2+, Mn2+, and SO42− impurity contents.

A performance study of oxygen self-rescuers of varying durations from the United States and other countries was undertaken as an assessment of present worldwide technology. The apparatus were tested on a Breathing and Metabolic Simulator in the Life Support laboratories of the Bureau's Pitts- burgh Research Center. Parameters monitored during the testing were inhaled levels of C02, 02, inhaled gas temperature, and breathing resistance. The metabolic demand placed on the apparatus represented the average demand of the 50th percentile miner performing a 60-min man-test 4, as described in 30 CFR 11H. Results presented include apparatus service life and subjective comments as well as averages and peaks of monitored parameters.

In the mining industry and in new and expanding fields, such as electronics, nucleonics, and astronautics, a new type of manager has evolved. The name most generally used is project manager. His business is to create a product and the principal means through which he accomplishes this is project management. In this chapter, new information is the product of the project manager; as such the products, for which the computer methods described throughout this volume are designed, fall in the domain of project management. It has been the author's experience that project management is the management tool to effectively direct the information technology function within an organization. The purpose of this chapter is to describe project management and to identify and present a solution to the problems associated with project management in the development and application of computer methods in a minerals environment. Specifically, the problems to be addressed will center around: (1) recognition of the need for project management in terms of business-environmental factors and product characteristics, (2) formulation of a method of operation in terms of organization and implementation, and (3) application of project management to the minerals industry.

Petromineralogical studies of late Paleocene–middle Eocene phosphate nodules in the Subathu Basin of Solan District, Himachal Pradesh

Five coals blended at a Midwestern United States power station were subjected to detailed analysis of their Hardgrove grindability. The coals, representing four distinct coal beds, are a low-sulfur, high-volatile A bituminous Upper Elkhorn No. 3 coal (Pike County, Kentucky); a medium-sulfur, high-volatile A bituminous Pittsburgh coal (southwestern Pennsylvania); a low-sulfur, subbituminous coal from the northern Powder River Basin (Montana); and two low-sulfur, subbituminous Wyodak coals from two different mines located in the eastern Powder River Basin (Campbell County, Wyoming). All samples that were processed in the Hardgrove grindability tests were also analyzed for their maceral and microlithotype content. The high-vitrinite Pittsburgh coal and the relatively petrographically complex Upper Elkhorn No. 3 coal exhibited different grindability behavior. The petrographic compositions of the Pittsburgh raw feed, the 16 x 30-mesh fraction (HG! test fraction) and the -30-mesh fraction (HGI test reject) are similar, suggesting that the HGI test fraction typifies the whole feed. The eastern Kentucky test sample is not as representative of the whole feed, with the HGI test fraction having lower vitrinite amounts than the rejected -30-mesh fraction. The Powder River Basin coals are high in vitrinite content and show behavior similar to the Pittsburgh coal.

This paper deals with the causes and mechanisms of massive pillar failure in a room-and-pillar mine that employed nine-entry panel system using supersection technique under a cover ranging from 91 to 168 m (300 to 550 ft). Chain pillar squeeze and large roof-to-floor convergence were first observed at the belt transfer point on the very inby side of the main entries. It propagated outby quickly and within 24 hours it had covered an area approximately 1,250 m long by 762 m wide (4,100 x 2,500 ft). The failure was caught and stopped by a solid barrier pillar. Using computer modeling, the study indicated that the massive failure was initiated due to a combination of undersized chain pillars in some panels and weak immediate floor. Also, the study shows that the massive pillar failure expanded to a large area because of no barrier pillars between some panels and between mains and panels. Based on the computer modeling, alternative mine plans have been proposed to avoid such problems.

The environmental impact assessment (EIA) is the accepted method for evaluating proposed mining and other industrial projects to obtain regulatory approval and to help companies plan for responsible development. Another increasingly common evaluation system for proposed projects is the environmental, social and health impact assessment (ESHIA). An ESHIA differs from an EIA for its generally more comprehensive and inclusive approach to evaluating potential impacts, such as on public health, and other features such as an ecosystem services approach to assessing biophysical and community impacts. An ESHIA may also be required by certain lenders for financing major projects. In this paper, EIA standards for the province of Alberta, Canada are discussed and compared to ESHIA. It concludes with several recommendations for consideration.

A 15 km water supply tunnel is being constructed in Buenos Aires, Argentinata expand the capacity of the existing system. Two 4.3 meter diameter Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) tunneling machines operating at times from the same shaft on a congested work site and advancing through sedimentary deposits underlying this wonderful city pose interesting challenges. As of January 1999approximately 50% of the tunnel has been excavated. Combined machine production rates of 1026 m/month have been achieved. Presentations made in prior proceedings can be referenced for details of the overall Project scope and for details of the tendering process. The purpose of this paper is to compliment those presentations by addressing now the execution of the work.

A small size quarrying activity (3 different quarries with an overall production in blocks less than 10.000 m3/year) has been exploiting for a long time the ?Tonalite? deposit of Adamello-Presanella. In 1967, given the outstanding natural beauty of the area, a natural park has been established with the aim of preserving environmental quality and, at the same time, of providing a sustainable development to the area. Because of the potential impacts of a mining activity in such a context, a specific study has been recently carried out in order to define if and how the quarries could co-exist with the park, beyond the ?administrative results? of a classic environmental impact assessment. The paper deals with the process that drove to the conclusion that the activities are not ?a priori? incompatible with the aims of the park. In the opinion of the authors, a responsible quarry management, which must take inspiration from the care given to environment by traditional alpine productive activities (e.g. the use of water, of wood, and of the stone itself), and take advantage of modern technologies in terms of emissions and safety, can be considered not only compatible with the protected area, but even able to positively contribute to the protection of the land and environment (Barisone et al., 2001). A series of specific prescriptions, which have been adopted by the Park Authorities after this study, are also discussed in the paper: only the definition of suitable spatial and temporal limits, the adoption of effective technical practices and a strict control are considered to be able to drive this ?exceptional? activity towards the final goal of real sustainability.

The Sunshine Mining Co. has recently started up its new silver refinery in Kellogg, ID. The new plant recovers silver anc copper values from a high grade tetrahedrite concentrate using hydro- metallurgical processes. The plant and process are both new and have gone through the initial startup phase during the first six months of 1985. The full scale plant was developed from laboratory test work. While the metallurgy of the process worked as expected, the material handling problems were difficult to over-come. As might be expected, those parts of the plant that represented available technology started up easily, while the parts that represented new technology presented the most difficulty. Topics covered in this paper include: 1) insufficient type and amount of agitation in the leach vessels, 2) discharge of a non- homogeneous slurry from the leach vessels, and 3) problems associated with very low flow rates in slurry lines.
