The industrial practice of froth flotation for upgrading the quality of fine coal is a relatively complex, expensive, and inefficient process when compared to the coarse- and intermediate-size coal cleaning circuits. The differences in cost and process efficiency can be attributed mainly to the lower equipment throughput, the added cost of flotation reagents, and the fact that flotation is typically a manually operated process susceptible to fluctuating feed characteristics that influence the overall operating efficiency. The emphasis in recent years has been on improving the flotation process efficiency and lowering the cost per clean ton. This has been achieved by larger flotation cell designs, implementation of flotation reagent evaluation programs, and improved process instrumentation and control. These developments are reviewed along with other current coal flotation practices.

American Barrick Resources Corp. has come farther, faster in the last 11 years than any mining company in recent memory. Acquisition of Lac Minerals Ltd. in August 1994 now makes Barrick the largest gold producer in the world outside South Africa. In terms of market capitalization, the company is the world's most valued gold producer. American Barrick's 28.3-km2 (7000acre) Goldstrike property on Nevada's Carlin Trend, the primary engine for past growth, was purchased in 1987 for $62 million. Regarded as an attractive exploration target, Goldstrike instead propelled American Barrick to the front rank of world gold producers. In 1993, the company produced 50.75 t (1,631,988 oz), 44.78 t (1,439,929 oz) from Goldstrike. Reserves on the property totaled 905 t (29.1 million oz) at the end of 1993, the largest in North America.

During the last 30 years, a dramatic increase in the supply of byproduct sulfur substantially reduced the share of the market held by Frasch-mined (non-by-product) sulfur in North America. Even though Canadian sulfur production is not discretionary, the geographic remoteness from the large US markets and the high transportation costs associated with delivering sulfur to those markets has meant that Canadian producers act like discretionary producers in many important ways. They have effectively replaced the US Frasch producers as the cost-marginal sulfur source to large US markets. Implications of this change in market structure include more volatile sulfur prices and longer sulfur price recessions.

Laboratory experiments have been performed to evaluate the potential for metal removal and recovery from river bed tailings by ferric chloride leaching. The lead, zinc, silver and other metals in the river bed occur due to the old method of dumping mill tailings into rivers. This was practiced prior to the introduction of tailings impoundments. The effects of the leaching method, leaching time, pulp density, ferric chloride concentration, and leaching temperature on the rates and recoveries of lead, zinc and silver were studied. The effects of pulp density and leaching temperature were significant on the extraction rates of lead, zinc and silver. The lead content in the leached tailing was reduced to 0.023 percent, when using an 353O K leaching temperature and 0.384 g of FeC13/1 g of sample.

Mining companies have been required to enter a "new era of management" in the 1980's as they strive to become more efficient in an increasingly competitive market place. One response for many companies has been to modify their mine accounting systems to make them more effective for cost control and decision-making. Pyrometallurgical process are usually used to recover valuable metals from metal sulphide concentrates. However, their use is diminishing as the cost of energy rises and pollution controls become strictes. An alternative method of treatment sulphides could be bacterial leaching due its simplicity and negligible contamination (1-2). This process is presently used commercially to re cover metals such as Cu and U from low grade ore concentrates. In spite of numerous researchs during recent years (3-5) there exists very little kinetic data concerning the speed of bioleaching process. The kinetic analysis of bacterial activity is related with the metabolism and growth of microox ganisms . This fundamental information permits ma- king the best utilization of bacterial oxidation and to suggest techniques which might increase the production of the products desired. However, bio- kinetic models are especially complicated due to the existence of many metabolic routes and parallel reactions which are important for the life of the bacteria. Microbiological oxidation of a mineral substrate is influenced by its own inicial concentration: This influence can be determined by means of a kinetic study. In a medium with sufficient concentration of nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium) and an adequate supply of 0, and CO2, as the only & L source of carbon for the biochemical synthesis, the substrate concentration would remain the only limitation in the rate of leaching. In this case the Michaelis-Menten model could be applied (6). The model is based on an association of the enzyme (El with the substrate (S) with consequent decomposition of the latter into enzyme and products [ ] The rate of dissolution is defined by the equation : [ ] Were V is the rate of metal extraction (mg 1-1 1 h-1 ) ; S is the pulp density Mn is the maximum rate for metal extraction (mg 1-1 h-1) and K is the constant of Michaelis (concentration of substrate that yields Vm/2). This method is applicable only when the rate of bacterial growth is similar to the rate of metal extraction. It would therefore be sufficient to control the concentration of metal in the medium over the period of time. In the present work a systematic study of the kinetics of ZnS and CuFeS bioleaching in sphalerite and complex ore concengrates was carried out. The rate of dissolution of the Zn and Cu as function of the pulp density and temperature was determined. However, most oxidations of sulphide dissolution take place with a very slow kinetic; but, this can be accelerated considerably by the addition to the solution of suitable catalytic ions, as was Suggested many years ago by Bjorling (7). Such ions can exercise an important influence on the rate of the oxidation-reduction reactions, both homogenous and heterogenous, which take place during the leaching of sulphides; they also affect the nature of the reaction products. The action of catalytic ions has been fully developed in aqueous systems, but in the absence of bacteria (8 - 11) although the actual machanisms is not totally known. The mechanisms proposed as hypotheses in the literature (8) indicate that, in the case of ZnS, the catalyst ion act through an electrochemical mechanism according to the reactions: [ ]

Extraction of hard coal reserves, but also of mineral resources in general in the underground coal mines includes in itself many anthropogenic interventions in the earth crust. These interventions are closely associated with the solution of stability problems in the mine and with occupational safety. One of potential applications of such geo-technical interventions in rock mass is the chemical grouting technology. The chemical grouts are very suitable to affect the physical and chemical properties of rock mass. With the present development of chemical grouts, primarily based on polymers, there come into existence new composite materials during the grouting process (the so called geo-composites), which properties significantly differ from the original rock. An important factor, which affects a choice of chemical grouts and at the same time the effectiveness of grouting technology is the resulting properties of geo-composites. The properties of a coal geo-composite differ from the ones of the unmodified coal seam. On the basis of the laboratory geo-mechanical tests, the differences of properties of both material types were found. While the pure coal samples were destroyed very brittle and explosive, the geo-composite samples were making higher level of tenacity and load bearing ability after overstep of material strength. The presented paper discusses the different behaviour of these original and modified coal samples. The X-ray CT scans were used for observation and demonstration of failure evolution in these samples of pure coal and coal geo-composites after compressive loading.

Surface mining in arctic regions is characterized by many unique problems. Continuous and discontinuous permafrost (perennially frozen ground) occurs in most of the arctic and subarctic areas. Permafrost presents special problems of slope stability. Stability of permafrost depends on its temperature, moisture content, and material type. Permafrost slope fails due to solifluction, disturbance of ice-rich slopes, and liquefaction. Drilling and blasting of frozen ground present special problems. Depending on their degree of saturation with water, freezing soils and rocks have a number of important characteristics that affect blasting efficiency. Metals used in mining equipment and mining structures require special selection. At low temperatures, many steels lose most of their normal ductility and toughness (resistance to brittle fracture). This paper discusses engineering solutions to unique problems of arctic mining.

One of the Swiss transalpine highways includes two remarkable tunnels: the 16.3 km long Gotthard Road Tunnel and the 9.3 km long twin tube Seelisberg Tunnel, both presently under construction. Large diameter shafts up to 900 m long are required for ventilation. Excavation techniques for rock formations ranging from loose sedimentary rock to granite and very hard siliceous limestone were carefully evaluated. The methods finally applied include excavation of shafts in hard rock, conventional drilling and blasting, excavation by ripper-tooth excavator ("Big John") in marlstone, shield protected heading in loose material and soft rock, and tunnel and shaft lining, both by poured concrete and by prefabricated elements. A critical review of the success of these methods can now be made after a five year construction period.

With the construction management team established and a full funding agreement secured the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) now has the manpower and the financial resources to continue Metrorail construction into the 1990's. This paper describes WMATA's new role as construction manager after the transition from Bechtel Associates and gaining the full funding agreement with the Urban Mass Transit Administration (UMTA) and regional governments to complete 84.7 Metrorail miles (136km). The authors review the most recent station and line tunneling projects. WMATA's contractors have employed the state of the art soft ground and hard rock tunneling equipment and methods - an earth pressure balance TBM, a closed face TBM, and the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). In final, the paper previews future underground work to be let under the funding agreement.

Two key components make up the core of a rapid excavation operation. They are: the breaking up of the rock and its removal. Owing to the complexity inherent in mechanical rock-breaking and the relative infancy of the art, for a number of years the first of these two components has received virtually undivided attention from the industry. Only recently has some concern been expressed about the technology and the economics of the much ignored second component: muck removal. As the continuous boring machine's percentage downtime continues to trend lower in the future, the need for adequate and more effective materials handling systems in rapid excavation will become increasingly more acute. (1) Recognition of the need for a broader and more far-sighted approach to our problem has been eloquently underscored in the conclusions of the Committee on Rapid Excavation sponsored by the National Research Council: "Ultimate attainment of the desired cost and speed improvements is significantly dependent on recognition of the excavation process as a system whose subsystems are critically inter-related. Substantial amounts of full-scale field testing of integrated driving, muck removal, and support subsystems are required." (2)

Current approaches to reclaiming acid generating tailings include permanent water cover or encapsulation with various synthetic liners and/or clay. Although these methods can be effective, some ongoing maintenance will be required in perpetuity to ensure that water levels are adequately maintained or that the integrity of any capping system is protected. The successful creation of wetlands in tailings basins offers the possibility of creating a stable environment for the tailings with minimal maintenance. Acid-generating tailings from a massive zinc sulfide deposit in Winston Lake, Ontario, were placed in small cylindrical tanks to examine the feasibility and effectiveness of creating wetlands and mitigating acid and metal release. Two uncovered controls were established in addition to the five treatments, which were done in duplicate. Each wetland tank was 117 cm in diameter and contained 6 1 cm of tailings. Treatments included 61 cm cover of wetland soil, 61 cm of glacial till, 61 cm of tailings, and two tanks with 71 cm of water. One of the water covers included the aquatic macrophytes: Elodea canadensis, Potamegeton sp., and Ceratophyllum demersum. Cattails (Typha latifolia) were planted in the plots with substrate cover, and the initial water level was set at ten centimeters. The pH within the tailings in the treated tanks generally ranged between 6.0 and 6.5 and zinc concentration ranged from 0.02 to 0.1 mg/L. The drainage from the controls had an average pH of 3.3, and 7,700 mg/L of zinc.

This paper deals with the effects of various bit geometric parameters on the failure characteristics of rock material. Improving the rock-cutting efficiency of continuous mining machines has proven to be an interesting research topic during the last few decades. In the current study, an automated rotary rock-cutting simulator, duplicating a continuous miner, was used to study these parameters in the laboratory. The improvement of bit performance in terms of its life, cutting efficiency, dust production and energy consumption has drawn widespread attention. Research has demonstrated that optimizing bit parameters can result in efficient fragmentation of rock. Indiana limestone rock material was used in this study. The bit tip angle, bit tip size, bit spacing, depth of cut and cutting velocity of the rotary drum were varied to investigate the failure characteristics. The cutting pressure, penetrating pressure and the depth of cut were monitored on the simulator during the cutting process. Airborne dust and settled dust were measured for each experiment. Then, the specific airborne dust and specific energy were determined for each type of bit. Triaxial tests were carried out to correlate the failure angle of the rock in the static case to the dynamic cutting process failure. The physical and mechanical properties of the rock were also determined to assess their influence on the wear characteristics of each bit.

The driving force behind most advances in technology is need. In the early 1980s, underground coal miners in the USA wanted to build longer conveyors to handle larger capacities but continue to use fabric reinforced belting with mechanical fasteners. Conveyors with intermediate drives were certainly the answer but achieving reliable designs required a significant learning curve. Basic design methodologies had to evolve including advanced simulation of starting and stopping along with complex control techniques and logic. Some components also evolved as specific performance requirements changed Today, in addition to underground mining, the technology has been used extensively in the tunneling industry where the need is for control of belt tensions to negotiate tight horizontal curves. Even though intermediate drives are not used extensively on the surface yet, the lessons learned will find their way to long overland surface conveyance where smaller components are more available and reliable, and often with less capital cost. This paper will document the evolution of intermediate drive technology over the last 30 years and will show examples of its current use.

"The new metro line “C” entails the construction and rehabilitation of 24 stations and 21,5 km of metro line, 13 of which carried out underground; the new metro line will improve the transportation system of a congested city such as Rome.The new line “C” of San Giovanni metro station will be constructed adjacent to the existing line “A” of San Giovanni station; the new metro line “C” is deeper than line “A” and will underpass the existing station. The underpass project envisages an Artificial Ground Freezing in order to excavate two new tunnels, while keeping trains running in the safest possible condition.In order to allow trains to regularly run to and from the existing station’s line “A”, a temporary structure for rail support, during excavation of the under-crossing tunnels, was installed and a real-time monitoring system was devised in order to control both soil temperature during freezing activities and the existing station’s behavior. The monitoring system has been one of the key to the success of the project.The excavation of tunnels under the water table, with a hydraulic head of over 10 m in not homogeneous soils having different mechanical properties and permeability and below existing sensitive structures, involves special ground freezing sequences and methods, as well as peculiar drilling systems and operations, such as TDDT (Trevi Directional Drilling Technology).THE NEW “C” LINE OF ROME’S METROThe world’s most complex and extraordinary Metro System is currently being built in the heart of Rome. The Afton copper-gold mine is located in the southern interior of British Columbia, 16 km (10 miles) west of Kamloops and 257 km (160 miles) northeast of Vancouver. 'An aerial view of the property in 1976 is shown in Fig. 1. The Afton copper-gold ore body [27 Mt (30 million tons)] of open pit ore with a grade of 1.0% copper, 0.46 g/t (0.01 6 oz per ton) gold, and 4.1 g/t (0.12 oz per ton) silver, occurs within the Triassic Iron Mask pluton adjacent to its faulted contact with Tertiary rocks. The geological setting of the Afton ore body is described by Carr and Reed (1976). Rocks of the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic eras outcrop in the vicinity of Kamloops, but the unit with the greatest economic significance is the Upper Triassic Nicola volcanic group and its subvolcanic dioritic intrusion, the Iron Mask pluton. The Afton ore body occurs at the northwesternextremity of the Iron Mask pluton immediately south of a deep graben structure that developed in post-Triassic time (Coast Mountains orogeny) and which was the focus of vigorous sedimentation and volcansim in Tertiary times. The Iron Mask pluton is a lenticular composite intrusion approximately 14.5 km (9 miles) in length in a northwesterly direction. The petrography of the Iron Mask pluton ranges from picrite and serpentinite to latite porphyry. Outcrops of individual petrographic units are generally elongate in a northwesterly direction parallel to the axis of the pluton. The Iron Mask pluton represents the moderately slowly cooled core of an oceanic fissure volcano which built up an island flanked by shallow-water sediments including reef knolls and which, during its later stages, intruded its own volcanic pile.

Studies in eastern Ohio, northern West Virginia, and southwestern Pennsylvania determined whether subsidence caused by longwall mining influences soil moisture and tree growth. Soil moisture was measured both over new longwall panels and over an unmined control area throughout the growing seasons of 1990, a wet year when the panels were excavated, and 1991, a dry year. No significant effects of mining could be detected. Tree growth was studied in two pairs of woodlots. In each pair, one woodlot was located over a longwall panel excavated about 1980 and the other over an unmined area. Differences in tree growth between mined and unmined areas were neither significant (for most species) nor consistent in direction. The above results imply that if mining does have impacts they are likely to be highly site-specific and localized such as by disruptions of springs or soil slippage.

Ground freezing was chosen as an initial support method during construction of two deep shafts at the Mill Creek project. The Mill Creek, Phase 2 tunnel (MCT-2) is utilized to convey and store combined storm and sanitary sewage collected from the member communities in the greater Cleveland area. The main objective of groundfreezing was to provide a strong support structure to resist soil and groundwater pressures. This was achieved by creating a watertight, frozen-ground barrier around the shaft perimeter. The paper will provide an overview of ground freezing techniques applied during the construction of two shafts, each 250-feet deep.

ABSTRACT The presence of gold in lateritic crusts over mafic and ultramafic volcanogenic complexes in / and greenstohe belts, has called the attention in several parts of Brazil and also in Australia. Recent studies reveal the variety of structures and mineralogy of such crusts, and their importance in correlation with host(bed) rock types, as exploration guides, specially for greenstone belt metallogeny. The expected nature of growth of plates and/or nuggets in such crusts is under detailed study, and is considered as possibly due to dissolution and reprecipitation phenomenae of disseminated-fine-low grade ore in the host rock, in this investigation, laterite geochemistry, though incipiently discussed todate, is of fundamental importance and significance. Lateritic gold can be classified texturally as: dusty and diffused, fine, thin platy, taDular, and nuggets. Such gold is pure, and is often restricted to nodular (pisoliths, ooliths, concretions) forms or the matrix, that constitute the crusts or lateritised gravel beds which have an essentially goetnitic nature. Further this gold is recovered directly by mining the crusts or the adjoining placers with the metal derived from them. The thickness and extension of laterite crust zones is extremely variable depending oh the paleoclimatic conditions, and is conditioned to the favourable lithology and its structural expression. However, the "growth" of gold in these laterites will be conductive , without doubt, to several small scale mining activities, specially in the developing countries and regions limited to latitudes 309N and 309S.
