The term olivine was first used in 1790 by J. Werner, and the corresponding mineral was so named because of its olive-green color (Hunter, 1941). Olivine is the principal component of the rock known as dunite. While by classic definition dunite is composed of 90% or more olivine, commercial use of these terms has resulted in more specific definitions. Commercially, the term olivine is used to designate a material that consists of 85% or more forsterite and contains 45 to 50% MgO, 39 to 42% SiO2, 5 to 8% Fe2O3, and has an ignition loss (LOI) of 1 to 2%. The term dunite designates a rock that contains 36 to 45% MgO, 36 to 39% SiO2, and has an ignition loss of as much as 10% (Teague, 1983). GEOLOGY Olivine is found in basic igneous and basic metamorphic rocks whose age varies from pre-Ordovician to Tertiary. Economic deposits are of magmatic origin and are restricted to the dunite variety of the peridotite group of ultrabasic igneous rocks. Olivine also occurs in basic igneous rocks such as gabbro, basalt, and diabase and more rarely as an accessory mineral in granite and metamorphosed crystalline limestones. Mineralogy The term olivine refers to a group of orthosilicate minerals in isomorphous series with magnesium-rich forsterite (Mg2Si04) as one end member and iron-rich fayalite (Fe,SiO,) as the other. In most olivines the ratio of magnesium to iron varies from 16: 1 to 2: 1. Commercial olivine deposits contain a mixture of forsterite and fayalite with the fayalite content restricted to less than 15% (Reed, 1959; Teague, 1983). Accessory constituents may include primary minerals such as ilmenite, magnetite, diopside, chromite, and garnet and secondary minerals such as chlorite, serpentine, talc, and vermiculite as alteration products. Chemical and Physical Properties The chemical composition of olivine can be expressed as either (Mg, Fe), SiO, or 2(Mg, Fe)O.SiO,. Table 1 presents chemical analyses for some commercial olivines. The physical properties of olivine are shown in Table 2. Distribution of Major Deposits Commercial olivine and dunite deposits are found in Norway, Japan, Spain, India, Italy, the United States, Sweden, Austria, Pakistan, and Mexico. Noncommercial deposits have been reported in New Zealand, Zimbabwe, South Africa, New Caledonia, Greece, Brazil, and Canada (Teague, 1983). The present markets for olivine are characterized by low unit value, high volume, and high sensitivity to freight costs, so few deposits are commercially viable. Literature from the USSR indicates that considerable research on olivine refractories is being done. (Afansa'ev, 1988), lending credibility to the conjecture that commercial deposits are being mined there. In eastern Canada synthetic olivine is being produced by calcining chrysotile asbestos mine tailings. In the United States numerous lenses of olivine extend in a belt from northeast Georgia northeastward across western North Carolina. Total reserves in North Carolina and Georgia are estimated at between 125 and 200 Mt. The largest US deposit is Twin Sisters Mountain, located in Whatcom and Skagit Counties in the state of Washington. This deposit, which has an outcrop area of 93 km2 and a relief of about 1 525 m. is estimated to contain 1 800 Mt of fresh, unaltered olivine (Teague, 1983). In addition, the US Bureau of Mines reports reserves of 50 Mt on Cypress Island in the state of Washington, and the literature reports eight complexes in southeastern Alaska, some containing cores of olivine as large as 1.6 km in diameter (Taylor, Jr., 1967). The world's largest deposit of olivine occurs in the Aaheim area of Norway, where reserves are estimated at a 2 000 Mt. Several other Norwegian deposits contain as much as 5 Mt each. In Japan the production of ultrabasic rocks is currently about 6 Mtpy, but the bulk of this output is serpentinite. Olivineldunite accounts for only 17% of this production. The major olivine deposit in Japan is located at Horoman Hill on the northern island of Hokkaido. Reserves at this deposit are estimated at 100 Mt (Anon., 1990). Spain is one of the largest producers of dunite. Reserves in the La Coruna District in northwestern Spain are estimated at 100 Mt. India, also a major dunite producer, has a large deposit at Salem in Tamil Nadu. In Italy olivine/dunite is mined from a deposit near Turin. In Sweden the largest deposit is at Arutats and is reported to be comparable in size to the Twin Sisters deposit in the United States. At present the only production in Sweden is from a deposit 30 km south of the town of Gallivare. Reserves at this deposit are reported to be between 1 and 2 Mt. Other significant deposits are: 1) in Austria at St. Stefan near Leoben, 2) in the Swat District of the North West Frontier Province in Pakistan, and 3) in Mexico at Cuidad Victoria in Tamaulipas (Anon., 1990).

The appropriate software and hardware necessary to adapt an X-ray CT analyzer for the determination of coal washability was developed and successfully tested for well-characterized samples under laboratory conditions. Evaluation of the CT-based analyzer under simulated on-line conditions is also presented to verify the on-line capabilities of the newly developed X-ray CT analyzer for the control of coarse coal cleaning circuits. The investigation shows that the data obtained from CT washability analyses compare favorably with experimental sink float data. Further, image frequency was considered to evaluate the CT-Based coal washability analyzer for simulated on-line conditions. Specifically, the number of observations (image spacing) needed for accurate sampling and the total time required to perform the calculations for a representative data set were determined. One of the major problems in the exploitation of deep copper ore deposits in the Legnicko-Glogowski Copper Field is ground control and, in particular, roof control of the headings. The depth of copper deposits ranges from 600 to 1200 m. The parameters of ore-bearing rocks and the surrounding rocks show considerable variance of strength properties along the mining thickness (Fig. 1). The roof of the openings exploitation headings consists of dolomite-calciferous rocks. The roof strata consist of layers, the thickness of which vary from several centimeters to 0.6 m (sometimes to 1.0 m). These strata differ in strength and are characterized by igneous and sedimentary discontinuities. On the basis of studies in structure, properties and geological mining conditions of the roof strata in Polish copper mines, the method of roof classification has been developed. (1) This method uses the stability index "L" of the roof, calculated from [ ] The value of "t" ranges from 0, l to 0,8. Based on the value of "L", four classes of the roof (Table 1) corresponding to different degrees of fall hazard have been developed. The mining of copper ore deposit is carried out by a single lift room-and-pillar mining system or a two-stage room-and-pillar system with roof caving. (3, 4). The single lift room-and-pillar mining system is most often used. It consists in working of the deposit of 2.5 to 4.5 m mining thickness, 150-350 m long mining line, consisting of parallel room faces 6 m wide with pillars 5.7 or 16 m wide. As the mining line advances, cross-cuts joining individual rooms are made, thus forming support pillars 3x5, 7x7, 5x16, and 7x16 m (Fig. 2). The two-stage system (Fig. 3) mines the deposit with rooms 6 m wide into blocks 25 x 35 x 25 x 45 m. During the second step these pillars are worked with rooms and cross-cuts into pillars about 3 x 4 to 4 x 5 m (retreat mining). The pillars are crushed just before the fall of the roof. The maximum opening of workings in the two-step system is about 10 m, i.e. one belt entry and one row of bearing pillars. In single lift room-and-pillar systems it is about 35 m., i.e. three belt entries and three rows of bearing pillars. The support of the headings consists of expansion bolts 1.6-1.8 m installed in a bolting pattern 1.1 x 1.5 m. In both systems the fall step is about 10 m, i.e. the width of a belt and a bearing pillar. The Indications of Rock Mass Pressure Individual Dog Heading Individual dog headings are set wide apart from each other in the unmined ore deposit area where there is no interaction of headings. The indication of rock mass pressure are, in such cases, limited to the deformations and damage of side walls. Radiometric studies of rock mass loosening showed that the maximum range of lifts in side-walls immediately after web was 2 m (4,5). In the course of time the cracked side rocks fall off, thus widening the heading. The morphology of side-walls is influenced by the location of the heading in relation to clump layer/tarry. For centuries Thailand has been a significant, though primarily unofficial, producer of gold. Panning has been the traditional way of making a living for innumerable villagers during the December to May dry season following the harvest. During this period groups can be seen working the streams, rivers, fields and dry valleys at as many as 90 localities in 28 provinces. Attesting to their efforts are the five and a half ton solid gold Buddha at Wat Trimit and much of the gold jewelry sold in Bangkok. This traditional panning will continue, and probably become more extensive, in harmony with commercial endeavors using modern technology suitable for extraction of gold from types of deposits for which gravity separation would give very low recoveries. Several such deposits have been discovered in the course of geochemical and geological surveys conducted by the Royal Thai Department of Mineral Resources with the object of contributing to early interpretation of the results of a country-wide airborne survey.

To maintain good condition of ventilation for both safety and economy, many regulators are installed in a network. In case the open state of a regulator is different from the set point, identification of a broken regulator and a countermeasure to recover airflow distribution in a network must be initiated as soon as possible. An experienced mining engineer can sense a deviation from ordinary airflow quantity. In this paper, a new system to monitor all the regulators in a network is introduced. The basic concept of the system is utilization of both human sensing of airflow rate and computer simulation to understand the macroscopic characteristics of a ventilation network. A fuzzy pattern distinction method is used to process human determination of airflow rate that may be ambiguous. The applicability of the system is demonstrated using the ventilation network of the Horonai coal mine, Japan. In particular, it is shown that the system can identify the regulator to be repaired from information supplied by workers relating to air- flow in a few sensor branches.

During the last 30 years, a dramatic increase in the supply of byproduct sulfur substantially reduced the share of the market held by Frasch-mined (non-by-product) sulfur in North America. Even though Canadian sulfur production is not discretionary, the geographic remoteness from the large US markets and the high transportation costs associated with delivering sulfur to those markets has meant that Canadian producers act like discretionary producers in many important ways. They have effectively replaced the US Frasch producers as the cost-marginal sulfur source to large US markets. Implications of this change in market structure include more volatile sulfur prices and longer sulfur price recessions.

Spirals play an important role in fine coal and mineral processing. To date, almost all spiral designs have been empirically based. Although many operational units have evolved utilising this approach, it does not necessarily lead to optimal spiral designs. This paper presents the preliminary results of a collaborative computational and experimental research program to understand the detailed separation process which will ultimately lead to a parametric assessment of alternative spiral designs through computational simulation. Unlike the empirical approach, a computational simulation is only subject to the fundamental physics of the fluid flow. No prior knowledge of the generic spiral flow is necessary. The computer code implements a robust finite volume technique to predict the three dimensional fluid motion. A height function method is used to model free surfaces and the code is capable of handling arbitrary spiral geometries. Preliminary validation of the computational simulation is carried out through analysis of an existing spiral design -the Mineral Technologies LD9 unit. Computational flow predictions are compared with experimental measurements obtained using a number of techniques, including sampling and flow visualisation, for flow test cases where no solid particulate is present.

Since the 1974 introduction of catalytic converters to automobiles in the United States, more than 150,000 kg (5,000,000 oz) of platinum, palladium, and rhodium have been used in the converters. An estimated 8 to 10 million converters are being used annually in the United States, each containing from $5 to $15 of PGM metals. In addition, use of converters is beginning in Europe which will significantly increase the quantity of PGM used. Two basic types of catalysts for converters are being used: pellet and monolithic. The pellets are small, discrete spheres or cylinders of gamma-alumina coated with platinum group metals, Figure 1. The monolithic are honeycombs of a cordierite, A13(Mg,Fe)2Si5AlO18, base coated with gamma-alumina and subsequently with platinum group metals, Figure 2. Pellet catalysts are being used by General Motors and American Motors; whereas Ford and Chrysler are using monolithic catalysts. The table below compares the PGM content and value of the catalysts.

As part of the 3RPORT Project, a 5-mile tunnel is being excavated underneath the three rivers of Fort Wayne using a 19-foot diameter Slurry Tunnel Boring Machine. The groundwater pressure at the tunnel axis ranges from 4.5 to 5.3 bar. The rock mass hydraulic conductivity is very high with water inflows up to 10,000gpm imposing significant challenges to the project. After excavating 1,550-feet of the TBM tunnel, major leaks between the tailskin and the segmental lining were observed, indicating the potential deterioration of the tailskin brushes and the need for inspection and eventual replacement. The first part of the paper describes the planning of the intervention, including the design of the polyurethane grouting campaign, the procedures developed for the execution and the controls established during construction to timely assess the presence of potential hazards. The second part of the paper focuses on the experience gained during execution and lesson learned to prevent future occurrences of this nature.

The Porgera gold district, like many other large gold deposits, has a long history of awareness, but only in the last five years has a geologic understanding of the district permitted the discovery of economically attractive gold reserves. The following sequence of events highlights the various significant steps in the evolution of the discovery process. The history of the district goes back about 50 years, and for several decades it was known only for its placer gold. Gradually, as gold became a more interesting metal, more and more attention was centered on the district. The sequence of events does not overstate the problems caused by isolation and climate, but the reader can imagine the difficulties inherent in such an area.

In order to investigate the explosibility of sulphide mineral dusts, sulphide ore samples were collected from five underground metalliferous mines in Australia. The mineralogical and chemical composition of the dust samples was analysed by X-Ray Powder Diffraction and Atomic Absorption techniques. Simulated post detonation fumes were produced and used in dust explosibility tests to examine the influence of the fumes on sulphide dust ex- plosions. These tests were conducted in a 20 Litre Siwek Explosion Chamber with measurement and control system that is regarded as a standard testing system worldwide for dust explosion studies. The dust mineralogical composition and dust explosibility tests indicated that the content of sulphur can not accurately predict the explosibity of the sulphide dust. The percentage content of pyrite in the sulphide dust can be a relatively reliable diagnostic criterion in evaluating the risk of sulphide dust explosions in the mining of a massive sulphide orebody. The hybrid explosion tests demonstrated that the post detonation fumes from ANFO not only decrease the lower explosion limit of the sulphide dusts, but also increase the severity of the dust explosions. As part of a program to address the long-term need to ensure adequate supplies of domestic phosphate raw materials, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has conducted considerable research on dolomitic phosphate rock beneficiation. The discovery that alkyl diphosphonic acids act as phosphate mineral depressants led to the development of several processes involving a carbonate flotation step for the effective beneficiation of these problem ores. Most recently, a partial deoiling process in which the reagent consumption is greatly reduced has been developed. The reduction is achieved because part of the initial feed is beneficiated without passing through the separate carbonate flotation step. Using this method, a phosphate product containing 30.6-30.9% P2O5 and 0.7-0.8% MgO was obtained from a Florida dolomitic phosphate pebble that contained about 23% P2O5 and 2.0% MgO. The P205 recovery was 80.8-86.5%.

Froth flotation was employed to beneficiate a lean-grade siliceous rock-phosphate ore containing fluorapatite, the phosphate-bearing mineral. The main gangue minerals were quartz, iron oxides and aluminum oxides. After the rougher stage, four cleaning stages were required to upgrade the ore. The liberation size of the phosphate mineral was below 200 mesh, The reagent scheme consisted of commercial-grade sodium silicate and sodium oleate. The effect of reagent dosages, number of cleaning stages and pulp density on the efficiences of separation were studied systematically. A flowsheet was proposed for the processing of low-grade siliceous phosphate ore containing 12.1% P2O5, 55.36% SiO2 and 15.45% CaO. The flowsheet provided a useable phosphate concentrate containing 34.18% P2O5 and 14.20% SiO2 with a P2O5 recovery of 70.4% (the weight yield was 25.0%).

The University of Alabama Mineral Resources Institute (MRI) has developed a unique process for selective fatty acid flotation of carbonate gangue from sedimentary apatites (francolite) in the pH range of 4-6 without collector conditioning of the pulp. The process, which does not require an apatite depressant, was modified to benepciate a high- MgO siliceous phosphate matrix from south Florida. The modified process includes two flotation stages, one for car- bonate removal and the other for phosphate recovery from the siliceous gangue. The selective flotation separation of the carbonate and phosphate from siliceous constituents of the matrix at various pH levels and collector dosages are discussed. In the carbonate flotation stage, about 70% of the MgO was rejected in the froth. The phosphate flotation stage produced concentrates analyzing about 31% P2O5 0.7% ? 5 MgO, and 4% insol. For a Colorado mountain quarry, the Water Jet Channeling Method is far superior to Burning, Sawing, Drilling, or Shooting with Primer Cord, Water, or Black Powder. Throughout the life of our quarry, which was founded in 1947, we have used all the methods and turned to the Water Jet Channeler, which we invented and patented as our ideal way to remove dimension granite from our quarry. We jet the block on 4 sides and remove the block with plugs and feathers on the backside. The Water Jet uses approx 7.5 l/m (2 gpm) running at310,000 kPa (45,000 psi) to erode the crystals @ 1sm/h (10sf/h).The 0.533mm (.021”) nozzle oscillates back and forth to achieve an approx 5cm (2”) channel. Using the Jet, we do not lose corners or cause cracks in our red fine grain light class 5 granite.

Introduction Before examining the current position of the asbestos industry and its market outlook, it is important to describe the product itself. If we are to understand the problems besetting this basic mining and manufacturing industry, and, more importantly, if we are to appreciate solutions to these problems, we had better view asbestos from the proper perspective. Asbestos has a unique combination of properties - properties not found in any other natural substance or man-made material. As a result, asbestos has found its way - in fact, is welcomed - into hundreds of applications. Properties and Products World production capacity of asbestos fiber is about 6.5 Mt (7.2 million st). Since start-up in 1985, the Cannon Mine has produced and shipped a 170-g/ton (5 oz/ton) gold flotation concentrate to various smelters for gold and silver recovery. Several processes have been investigated to economically produce done' at the mine site from the refractory concentrate. This paper describes laboratory and pilot scale test work used in the process design and engineering. feasibility study of a 73-t/d (80 stpd) pressure oxidation and carbon-in-leach (CIL) facility. The designed pressure oxidation circuit utilizes a series of verti¬cal autoclave units operating at 170°C (338F) and 1.4 MPa (200 psig). Projected operating costs are discussed.

Mine development has evolved in the past 15 years from a human-paced system using hand-held drills and track-bound equipment to a mechanized system using specialized equipment for each component of the development cycle. In most Canadian hard-rock mines, face advance is achieved by the following sequential activities: drilling, explosive loading, mucking and ground support. The state-of-the-art for each work element is reviewed and methods for performance estimates proposed. The entire development system and its production capabilities are considered based on equipment reliabilities, spare units, haulage distances, and muck bay spacing. The effect of the number of working faces on the system's performance will also be analyzed. Manuscript not received in time for publication.

In 1988 a major exploration program was undertaken to determine the characteristics of the rock and soil for a 7.6 m diameter sea outfall tunnel beneath Boston Harbor out into Massachusetts Bay. The diffuser discharge location had been mandated by the EPA to a 10 sq. km area of seafloor connected to the proposed Deer Island Treatment Facility by a 14.5 km tunnel corridor. Geophysical surveys, deep rock borings, and laboratory testing, provided the information for the conceptual design. The program identified the range in material types and parameters to prove feasibility of a TBM driven tunnel and to locate the optimum alignment and depth.
