Personnel from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health integrated the results of studies from a seismic tomographic survey, a finite-difference analysis, laboratory measurements of compression wave (ultrasonic) velocities in rock cores, and site geology to evaluate the use of seismic tomography for identifying induced pressures in an underground pillar at the Edgar Mine, Idaho Springs, CO. The key findings were that (1) the seismic tomograms showed that seismic velocities in rock adjacent to mine openings were low, (2) a difference tomogram in which in situ stresses on the east and west sides of the slot were compared showed that velocities increased west of the slot but decreased east of the slot, (3) geologic features (rock types and a fault) identified through geologic mapping were recognizable in the seismic tomograms, (4) ultrasonic velocity measurements on the rock cores agreed with seismic velocity measurements in the tomograms, and (5) results from a finite-difference analysis compared well to the seismic tomograms west of the slot but not east of the slot. The significance of this research is that seismic tomography is a useful tool for determining relative stress in underground pillars.

With the opening of the Tilden mine near Ishpeming, MI, a new era in iron ore beneficiation was begun. A description of a U. S. Bureau of Mines investigation is summarized to illustrate the selective flocculation-deslime-flotation process developed by the Bureau and used at the Tilden concentrator, which is also briefly described. The operating parameters for the selective flocculation-cationic flotation of an oxidized taconite from the Mesabi range are discussed. A water reclamation system using lime and a cationic flocculant was applied to reclaim the effluents from a 900-pound-per-hour flotation pilot plant. About 80 percent of water requirements were recovered, and the calcium content of the reclaimed water was found to be more important than clarity in influencing the selective flocculation and flotation processes. Although reclaimed waters with about 10 ppm calcium registered turbidities of approximately 5,000 ppm SiO2 equivalents, the concentrates produced using these waters contained 64 percent Fe and =5.0 percent SiO2 and had accompanying iron recoveries of 75 percent. Lower grade concentrates resulted from using reclaimed water with higher calcium contents and lower turbidities.

With new mineral deposits found in areas of difficult terrain, and annual production capacity increasing in mines over the last decade, the aerial ropeway is proving to be a viable, economic method of transportation from mine to processing plant. Of the more conventional designs, a bicable ropeway is more suited to difficult country than the simpler monocable. The bicable, however, does have limitations in the difference in levels it can accommodate in one section at a given capacity. This is noticeable where hilly terrain and high capacity imposes a limit on the length of each section. Increasing the number of sections for a relatively short conveying distance tends, in the case of conventional bicable, to unbalance the normally favorable economics of the ropeway. In addition to analyzing hauling rope stresses, other areas have to be considered when looking at high capacity ropeways. Bucket capacity, speed, and the wheel load on track ropes are examples. These and other factors led British Ropeway Engineering Co., of Sevenoaks, Kent, UK, to produce the twin-track system. Using twin track ropes, larger capacity buckets, and, if the height differential warrants, the installation of twin hauling ropes, BRECO produced a ropeway design for areas of hilly terrain and at higher capacities than had been considered suitable for aerial ropeways. Designs have been produced for systems handling 1.5 kt/h (1,650 stph), and the potential exists for expansion to above 2 kt/h (2,200 stph). The arrangement of ropes provides high stability of the cars and is especially suited to areas where high winds occur during normal operation. This development allows the aerial ropeway to be applied economically in difficult areas and at the increasingly high capacities demanded by engineers. Ropeway Transports Limestone to Sudan Cement Plant Maspio Cement Corp. of Atbara, Sudan, will soon use an aerial ropeway to deliver its entire limestone requirement 20 km (12 miles) from quarry to plant. The Atbara plant is located north of Khartoum, near the east bank of the Nile River. The quarry is west of the river, in hills rising from flat desert country. The original transport system was a 24-km (15-mile) railway from the quarry to the west bank and a monocable ropeway that crossed the Nile and continued to the fac¬tory, a distance of about 2.5 km (1.5 miles). Many unique ventilation problems have been faced as Avery Island Mine's large openings have been mined. High humidity of outside air combines with the hygroscopic salt to create a corrosive atmosphere. Massive rooms preclude routine use of brattices to direct air flow to the working faces. Large amounts of explosives are consumed in single blasts. Resulting concussion pounds air control structures and ANFO ignition creates large amounts of nitrogen dioxide in single rooms. Geologic constraints confine new shafts and slopes to areas thought to be free of potential ground water hazards. Dust control techniques are limited by dry product demanded by customers. The Avery Island Mine's ventilation system has evolved to deal practically with the conditions and to dependably provide fresh air to the miners. International Salt Company's Avery Island Salt Mine, a multiple level room and pillar operation, has been mined steadily since about 1900. It is known as one of the "Five Island" salt dome mines of South Louisiana's Gulf Coast. Production from the area places Louisiana first in United States rock salt mined tonnage, according to the United States Bureau of Nines, 1982 (1). International Salt Company is a major force in U.S. salt production, as it also operates mines in Detroit, Michigan; Cleveland, Ohio; and Retsof, New York; a solar salt facility in Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles; and a solution mining plant at Watkins Glen, New York.

As part of a study aimed at understanding the hydrology of in situ leach mining (ISLM), the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Cyprus Casa Grande Corporation and the University of Arizona, is investigating dynamic transmissivity conditions during ISLM of a copper oxide ore deposit. Spatial and temporal variations in ore zone transmissivity during two years of ISLM operations at the Cyprus Casa Grande mine are evaluated during sixteen intervals of steady-state injection and recovery well operation. Direct inversion of an analytical hydrologic model is used to obtain estimates of transmissivity at 58 well locations during these intervals. Univariate statistical and geostatistical methods are used to describe the temporal and/or spatial relationships that exist between transmissivity and other ISLM parameters, including average well injection pressure, average sulfuric acid concentration in leach solution, and the relative configuration of injection and recovery wells. Average transmissivity during the sixteen steady-state time intervals varies between 6.00 x 10-6 m2/min. (6.46 x 10-5 ft2/min.) and 3.61 x 10-8 m2/ min. (3.89 x 10-7 ft2/min.). A trend toward decreas¬ing transmissivity is evident during two year of ISLM operations. This decreasing trend is found to correlate with a decreasing sulfuric acid concentration in injected leach solution, and suggests increasing geochemical precipitation within the deposit. Geostatistical analyses reveal a dynamic and anisotropic transmissivity structure within the target ore zone, that is dependent upon spatial and temporal changes in injection pressure and well configuration.

INTRODUCTION Pyrite responds to the flotation reagents normally used in sulfide flotation systems. For example, it is well known that xanthates are good collectors for pyrite, and cyanide, sulfide and hydroxides are depressants. The particular response of pyrite to these and other reagents is used to advantage in several areas. By careful control of depressant and collector additions, pyrite can be separated from other sulfides by flotation. This is of obvious importance in base metal sulfide flotation where pyrite depression is often required to produce a marketable grade concentrate. Flotation of pyrite has long been employed in gold ore processing, and it appears that pyrite flotation from coal may become important in the future (1). It is probably a direct consequence of this relative ease of separation, plus the low economic value of pyrite, that detailed investigations on the chemistry of its flotation and depression are relatively limited. Gaudin (2,3,4) and others, in the mid-1950's published data on the flotation of pyrite, but detailed or consistent mechanisms were lacking. In 1955, Sutherland and Wark's book (5) was published, in which a large amount of empirical information, especially earlier work of Wark and Cox, was presented. More recently, in 1968, significant contributions have been made by Fuerstenau et al. (6,7) and Majima and Takeda (El. These papers introduced electrochemical explanations of the effects observed with xanthate and cyanide ions.

During the past two years, there has been an increasing acceptance of process automation among ferrous, non-ferrous and non-metallic rock processing operations in an attempt to keep total unit costs in line in a market situation where labor and material costs are rising almost daily. Previous technical papers (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) have described, in considerable detail, instrumentation and automatic control devices that have been successfully applied in a wide variety of crushing and grinding facilities. While many of the basic control philosophies that evolved almost ten years ago remain essentially unchanged, new components and devices have been developed during the past two years that permit these philosophies to be better implemented in operating plants. Some of these devices and their application will be discussed with particular emphasis placed in describing the basic control philosophy employed as well as some of the hardware or components comprising typical crushing and grinding circuit control systems. Before any instrumentation or automatic control system can be successfully devised for a specific facility, there must be a clear understanding and agreement by supplier and user as to the control system objective. In the case of a crusher feed rate control system, the objective is generally to maximize thru-put of a given finished product size. While this is often the case in a grinding circuit automatic control system, the reasons may be entirely different. Taconite processors whose end product is to be pelletized, generally attempt to control their grind within narrow limits to optimize balling action. Other milling operations are more concerned with obtaining metallurgical liberation and can, in many cases, tolerate wider swings in finished grind.

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc. (FMI) will soon begin copper production from the Dos Pobres and San Juan deposits near Safford, Arizona. Ore reserves total 615 M tons grading 0.36% copper, predominantly as chrysocolla. Copper extraction will be by leaching with sulfuric acid. Fluor Canada Ltd. provided EPCM services to design an ore handling and conventional SWEW facility capable of producing a nominal 240 million pounds per year of cathode copper. The ore handling facility will process 114,000 tons per day of ore through three-stage, open-circuit crushing followed by agglomeration and product placement on the permanent leach pad. Stacking of ore on the leach pad will utilize Terra Nova Technologies' "Super Portable" mobile stacking system. The stacking system fleet consists of 13 self- propelled, crawler-mounted mobile conveyor units, each with 72-inch-wide belting and a capacity of 6,800 tons per hour, including ten 250-foot-long portable conveyors, a horizontal feed conveyor, a 285-foot-long horizontal conveyor and a 220-foot-long radial stacker. PROJECT BACKGROUND Project History The Safford Leach Project is located in the Safford mining district in Graham County, Arizona, approximately eight miles northeast of the town of Safford and 170 miles east of Phoenix. The 3,360-acre property is located in the Gila River Valley, immediately south of the Gila Mountains, at elevations between approximately 3,000 and 5,400 feet above sea level. The Safford Leach Project is comprised of the Dos Pobres and San Juan deposits, two of five known copper ore deposits in the Safford mining district.

Ion exchange resin processes are receiving renewed attention in the mining industry for recovery;, of metals from solution. This interest has been inspired by the development of continuous countercurrent ion; exchange systems (CCIX) which are of much lower cost than the original, fixed bed contactor processes. With the countercurrent systems and new developments to process or upgrade the eluate product, ion exchange can now compete successfully with solvent extraction for treatment of uranium ores. The low concentration of U308 obtained in the CCIX strong eluate is generally upgraded by solvent extraction methods in sulfuric acid systems. Resin loadings of up to 120 grams per liter of U308, however, have been produced experimentally by recycling of eluate (HIM-IX process) and further developments may be expected in the near future. New developments in resin technology are bringing forth products of greater strength, loading capacity, selectivity and density. Densities up, to 1.35 spgr have been claimed by some suppliers. The process is not a new one and has taken years to advance to the present state of development. The earliest system to gain widespread acceptance was the resin-in-pulp system applied to uranium recovery. Ion exchange, however, later lost acceptance in favor of solvent extraction in the 1960's due to problems in resin degradation, resin contamination and resin-pulp separation, in addition to the development of improved solvent extraction reagents and techniques. The resin-in-pulp system continues to have application on high clay ores and has advanced in design. A number of other continuous ion exchange systems were also tried but never gained continued acceptance. In the current resurgence period the CCIX systems to gain acceptance were the Utah and Chem-Sep (Higgins Loop) systems. These processes are relatively simple in concept although require sophisticated controls. Fixed bed columns have also been designed into multistage systems in countercurrent operation but are not discussed in this paper. These systems remain competitive today for many applications. The most recent advancements however have been in the multistage contactors from,, which three are in current acceptance. These are the Himsley, Porter, and NIM systems. All industrial applications of these systems are relatively new, although pilot plant and in-plant development has been in progress over the last decade. When Dr. David Gully solicited this paper last spring a few questions basic to commodity trade between the U.S. and world markets appeared perplexing. Why, for example, when the demand for aluminum was at a peak and when little expansion of capacity had taken place, was the dollar price half of what it had been at the previous peak? Or, why in 1984 when imports surged by 50% as the U.S. economy pulled out of its recession did the dollar not fall, but rather rose by 35%? And, why when the experts all seemed to agree that the dollar was grossly overvalued did the price of gold continue to decline? Surely these were extraordinary times for the mineral economist. When this paper was written in late July, 1985 the answers seemed clearer. The prices of many commodities were not low - the dollar in which they were denominated was too high. In other currencies many commodity prices were indeed high. The dollar was overvalued in trade terms by some 40% caused by an influx of short term coupon investments made by foreign money managers to take advantage of the higher short term interest rates in the U.S. relative to other international banking centers. With a decline in the relative difference in interest rates, an unhealthy buildup of foreign bank accounts and a perception that the dollar would fall, the dollar did start to decline rapidly.

The US Bureau of Mines investigated the selective electrowinning of Ag and Au from cyanide solutions contaminated with Cu with the goal of decreasing the amount of Cu codeposited. Decreasing Cu codeposited will reduce refinery costs. Direct current was applied to the cell in pulsed and square wave voltages at 0.7 A h/150 mL of solution. Times tested for each cycle ranged from 1 to 10,000 msecs. Graphite, lead and stainless steel were evaluated as electrode materials. Square wave electrowinning at 70°C (158° F) gave the best separation of Ag and Au from Cu. Applying 2.5 V during the duty cycle, 0.0 V the rest of the period, a duty cycle of 10% to 30%, and a period of 100 msecs to 1000 msecs gave the following results: Ag concentrations decreased from 34 µg/mL to 0.1 µg/mL. Au concentrations decreased from 54 µg/mL to 0.2 µg/mL and Cu concentrations remained almost constant at 560 µg/mL.

Automatic control of fine coal cleaning circuits has traditionally been limited by a lack of sensors. Although several nuclear-based analyzers are available, none have seen widespread acceptance. In this investigation, image analysis is used for on-line determination of ash content in fine coal slurries. The ash content of a flotation tailings stream is correlated to the mean gray level of the slurry. Based on a 90% prediction interval, an analysis of sensor performance indicates an accuracy of 73 ± 4% ash over a range from 65-90% ash. While this result is comparable to existing nuclear-based analyzers, the video-based system is only a fraction of the cost. The sensor is currently installed at the Middle Fork preparation plant owned by Pittston Coal Company.

Over the past six years, 4.5 million tonnes (5.0 million short tons) of gold ore have been heap leached at the Alligator Ridge Mine. Ore is leached in successive lifts, resulting in heap heights of 20 m (66 ft). Recoveries from each lift are determined through an extensive post-leach drilling program. The relationships between heap height, recovery rate, ore preparation, heap construction, and leach solution application are discussed.

Unmodified pneumatic rock drills may have noise levels of 115 to 130 dB at the operator's position. Experimental modifications have been made to a standard drill to suppress the noise from the three main sources: the air exhaust noise, the noise radiated from the drill, and the resonance noise of the steel drill rods. A prototype model developed at the Bureau of Mines, Rolla Metallurgy Research Center, operates at a noise level below 100 dB. A close-fitting case and muffler unit, consisting of a metallic skeleton filled with viscoelastic absorber and having a durable cover, provided both muffling and noise absorption. Damping alloys were used at strategic points in the drill. Drill steel resonance noise was reduced by a constrained-layer treatment on the outside of the drill rod. The singular and combined effects of the treatments are presented in detail.

China, a globally recognized major mining country, holds one of the largest quantities of tailings pond country in the world. The total number of mines in China has been ranked first in the world. It is a major concern for Chinese safety management to give great importance for tailings pond safety, stability and sustainable development. For the past few years, China has increased efforts to investigate and govern discrete issues of tailings and to carry out a series of special renovation and comprehensive treatment actions to improve safety management levels and to decrease the likelihood of tailings pond accidents. In the end of 2015, China successfully eliminated hazardous tailings ponds and dangerous tailings ponds. Moreover, the total number of tailings decreased from 12,273 to 8,869. However, there are still 1,425 "head-top" tailings that threaten the lower masses’ safety. This greatly signifies the Chinese tailings pond safety, stability as well as sustainable development. In turn, this may improve the Chinese tailings life cycle safety management system and help reach the goal of attaining closed-loop management in the tailings pond life cycle. Based on the summary of the tailings pond accidents in both China and other countries from 1961 to 2015, and by analyzing the types and causes of accident, this paper investigated the successful experiences and effective measurements of British Columbia (Canada) and Australia in the tailings pond life cycle safety management. This paper summed up each country’s tailings life cycle safety management requirements and analysed the characteristics and differences of tailings safety management by comparing 5 aspects: tailings life cycle safety management process, main design parameter, construction requirements, monitoring, and the tailings pond closing management. Based on these observations, this paper suggests some measurements to improve the tailings pond life cycle safety management in China, such as strengthening tailings pond safety management, improving tailings classification, increasing design parameter values, establishing mine reclamation fund, and so on.

Principles of Operation and Mechanical Features General Mechanical Description Sieve-bend screens are high-capacity screening devices which utilize stationary, concave, wedge-bar screening surfaces. A complete sieve bend is comprised of a feed distribution chamber, a structure for holding the screen surface, and collection chambers or chutes for oversize and undersize materials. In devices used for metallurgical practice, provision is usually made for reversal of the direction of flow over the surface, either by rotating the surface or by changing the feed nozzle position. The size of the unit varies in height from 5 to 8 ft, and in width from 2 to 8 ft. The orientation of the wedge-bar surface is such that the slots between the wedge bars are perpendicular to the flow of feed material over the surface. The feed distribution means is arranged such that the flow of liquid suspension is distributed evenly and tangentially over the width of the screen surface. A variety of means are used including simple gravity weir feeds, long slotted nozzles, and a multiplicity of round nozzles. A typical gravity-fed weir type nozzle is shown in Fig. 18. Noise control is an important consideration in the design and operation of coal preparation plants. It is essential to understand and control noise sources to provide a safe environment for operating personnel. The average noise exposure levels in a typical coal preparation plant generally range between 95 and 100 db. An operator should not be exposed to noise levels of this magnitude for more than 4 and 2 hr, respectively, according to MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) regulations. The major noise sources in a coal preparation plant include noise from impacting the inside surfaces of steel chutes, vibrating screens, coal crushers, pumps, motors, fans, and blowers. The magnitude of noise varies considerably from one situation to another. NOISE EXPOSURE IN COAL PREPARATION PLANTS Noise regulations established by the Occupational Safety and Health and- ministration (OSHA) are accepted by MSHA relative to coal preparation plants. Fig. 14-43 shows a graph of the time of noise exposure in hours per day to which a worker can be exposed for each A-weighted sound level. According to this graph, a worker is permitted to spend 8 hr in a 90-db noise environment, but that time must be halved when the A-weighted sound level increases 5 db. The noise dosage a worker receives is determined by the ratio of the length of time the worker spends in a particular noise environment divided by the length of time he is permitted to spend in that environment. If the worker is exposed to several different sound levels, his total dosage would be the sum of each of the individual dosages. The equation for determining the dosage is: where C is the actual duration of exposure at a given steady state noise level and T is the noise exposure limit for the level present during the time C According to MSHA regulations, the dosage, D, should not exceed one (1) for any worker for a full day of work. As an example of typical plant noise levels, vibratory screens and crushers emanate noise levels in excess of 90 db at a distance of 3 ft (0.9 m) with no material flow. Mississippi Valley Type Pb-Zn deposits are widespread in the midcontinent U.S. and have been mined from the 1800's to present. Some tens of thousands of acres of mined land in the Tri-State District have been designated as Superfund sites as a result of surficial mine wastes and ground waters with elevated levels of metals. EPA considers the surficial mine wastes to be hazardous and a major source of acid mine drainage fAMD) that degrades water resources and threatens human health and the environment. To mitigate potential risks at one site near Galena, Kansas, a group of mining companies who had been identified by EPA as Potentially Responsible Parties IPRPs) proposed subgrade disposal of the mining wastes in shafts and subsidence features. However, this proposal was challenged by the Agency on grounds related to AMD and the potential for degradation of ground water quality. The PRP team developed a program of materials characterization, laboratory-scale leaching, and finally large-scale, pilot testing in the field. Static and dynamic leaching tests at both laboratory scale fusing artificial rainwater under both variably and fully saturated conditions) and field scale (using pH 4.5 ground water) showed that the surficial wastes do not produce acidic leachate and are not a long-term source of metals. Laboratory chemical and mineralogical tests show that the mine wastes contain substantial carbonate, but very limited iron sulfides, consistent with the leach test results. EPA "characterization" tests fEP Toxicity and TCLP) compare very poorly with tests simulating the expected leaching conditions. While these tests would classify the surficia1 wastes as "hazardous, they do not characterize the behavior of the high-volume, low-concentration, coarse-grained materials with respect to environments and disposal options of interest. To be meaningful, characterization of mining wastes must be performed in a manner that simulates the environmental conditions that are actually of interest with respect to a specific decision, such as subgrade disposal in the saturated zone.

The Westside Light Rail Project, a major 19.3-km (12-mile) extension of Portland, Oregon's light rail system, includes 4.6 km (2.8 miles) of twin 5.8-m (19-ft) diameter running tunnels, a binocular type station which, at 80 m (260 ft) below the ground surface, will be the deepest mass transit station in North America, two 9.4-m (31-ft) diameter station access shafts, and a 5.2-m (17¬ft) diameter ventilation shaft. The tunnels are being excavated by TBM and conventional rock, soft ground, and mixed-face methods. Geologic conditions, alignment, underground opening design, excavation method selection, and payment provisions for excavation and initial ground support are discussed.

INTRODUCTION The extension project of the East Line Subway of Atlanta's subway network includes the construction of two single track transit tunnels under Interstate Highway 285. The project will be in DeKalb County, Georgia. The length, width, and height of each tunnel are 54.25, 6.3, and 7.2 m (178, 21, and 23 ft) respectively. The ground cover above the tunnel crown ranges from 1.5 to 3.25 m (5 to 11 ft). A soil pillar about 5.5 m (18 ft) wide will remain between the tunnels. The construction of each tunnel includes (i) installation of 21 steel soil support pipes of 75 cm (30 in) diameter, (ii) jet grouting 15 soil cement shafts of 60 cm (24 in) diameter in the soil under the pipes, (iii) contact grouting behind the tunnel lining and between soil support pipes and pavement, (iv) excavation of soil inside the soil support arch, and (v) installation of steel pile foundation, steel sets, and permanent tunnel lining of cast-in-place concrete, all as shown on the cross section in Fig. 1. The soil profile can be described from top to bottom as cement/asphalt concrete pavement, a fill layer consisting mostly of stiff sandy silt/firm silty sand, a residual soil layer consisting mostly of silty sand/sandy silt, partially weathered rock, and solid rock.
