The provinces of Guangxi, Guizhou, Hubei (and most recently Fujian) were the prime exporters of barite during this period. Guangdong and Shandong were exporters too but not major participants. These are all primarily agricultural areas so there existed a sufficient labor force willing to work in the mines to supplement their income from farming. During the early years, barite export pushed the existing transportation systems in these provinces to operational capacity. The mines from which this barite is extracted are located about 250 to 1,400 kilometers from the sea ports. Transportation of the ore from the mines to the ports follows a net-work that includes trucking to various rail-heads where it is then shipped via freight trains to ports for loading into seagoing vessels. in some instances, the barite travels by truck or train to the Yangtze River where it is then barged to an ocean port.

Significant quantities of nuclear wastes were first generated in 1944 as a byproduct of the national defense program. To establish the current inventories and future projections of nuclear waste products is not a simple task. The Oak Ridge National Laboratory recently issued a report which now constitutes the official basis for nuclear waste inventories and projections. Radioactive wastes originate from five major sources (U .S. Department of Energy, 1980b) : (1) From the commercial nuclear fuel cycle related to the production of electricity , (2) From defense related activities, (3) From institutions such as hospitals, universities, and research foundations, (4) From industrial uses of radioisotopes, and (5) From mining and milling of uranium ores.

A new agenda has risen. Born out of governments' policies and world economies, the years ahead will carry with them reduced growth. For inflation dependent and capital intensive industries, such as metals and mining, as well as most other natural resource industries, a period of long-term contraction in outmoded and costly capacity will evolve. This will be supplanted by new, lower cost capacity in some cases, but only if the total cost of production, including cash operating and debt service costs comes in at or below current market conditions. The industrial outlook can be characterized as bearish. As one major U.S. bank economist put it, mining companies planning their five-year forecast from 1984 out, should take the current market conditions and straight-line them to the end of the decade. With low growth and low inflation, the real price of metals will remain flat or slightly declining. As a result, capital funding will be problematic. The low cost producer, that is one with low cash costs and low principal and interest costs per unit of production, will succeed.

"1.INTRODUCTIONThis paper is based on the Lee Tunnel project, which is part of the Thames Water’s Tideway Project.The client Thames Water has employed a Joint Venture of Morgan Sindall/Vinci Grand Projets and Bachy Soletanche to undertake the design and construction of the project under the management of CH2M Hill at a value in excess of £635 million ($990 million). The 3 main elements of the tunnel project are the permanent lining to the shafts, the precast segmental lining, and the secondary tunnel lining. All 3 are reinforced with different types of Dramix steel wire fibers and each element will be described in this paper. This paper will explain the basic structural design of FRC (Fiber reinforced concrete) based on the post cracking residual strength and will describe all the steps of this project, the testing program realized to support innovative design and the main technical learning point. 2.BASIC CONCEPT OF STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF FRCStructural design of FRC elements is based on the post-cracking residual strength provided by fiberreinforcement. Other cases, like early age crack-control or fire resistance, are considered non-structural use of FRC. For structural use, a minimum mechanical performance of FRC must be guaranteed. Fibers can be used to improve the behavior at SLS (Service Limit State) since they can reduce crack spacing and crack width, thereby improving durability and they can be used to improve the behavior at ULS (Ultimate Limit State) where they can partially or totally substitute conventional reinforcement in most conditions. In the design process, the definition of the performance expected from the material is a key factor and the mix-design of the material has to be optimized for the required structural performance.2.1 Testing Method In order to ascertain the structural requirements requested for the FRC segments, preliminary testing on samples will be required and the effectiveness of the proposed solution will also be assured by the testing of full scale specimens. Structural design of FRC elements is based on the post-cracking residual strength provided by fiber reinforcement. For structural use, a minimum mechanical performance of FRC must be guaranteed. Nominal values of the material properties can be determined by performing a 3-point bending test on a notched beam according to EN14651 (figure 1) or by performing the ASTM C1609 beam test:"

With the growing dependence on coal as an energy source, finding a means to prevent or reduce the freezing of coal during winter shipment has become increasingly important. Several chemical companies focused on this problem and applied chemical technology to develop suitable solutions. As a result, a number of freeze conditioning agents have been introduced in the past few years, several of which have been highly effective in controlling frozen coal. The efficacy of these chemicals has been well established, however many users have found that only a well defined program will produce acceptable results at a reasonable cost. Positive program results yielding recognizable benefits have caused many power generating and coking plants to consider freeze conditioning agents. A freeze conditioning agent (or FCA) has been defined as a multi-component organic liquid designed to be sprayed on coal particles at bulk shipping points to assure that receiving locations will be able to unload, store and use the treated coal with minimum delay or inconvenience. The chemicals are generally applied at rates of 1 to 2 pints (0.473 to 0.946 liters) per ton and normally function by changing the crystalline structure of water left on the coal during processing. The bond strength of the ice that may subsequently form is markedly reduced. Instead of freezing into solid, unmanageable masses, the coal can be easily unloaded by rotary dumping or the opening of hopper car doors.

Three porphyry copper districts in southern Arizona are partly overlain by post-ore fanglomerates which share certain physical and petrologic characteris¬tics and which may comprise a distinct and significant class of rock. These units are the Locomotive fanglomerate of Ajo, the Helmet fanglomerate of Twin Buttes-Mission-Pima, and the Cloudburst formation of San Manuel-Kalamazoo, termed "Locomotive-type fanglomerates" herein. Post-ore units at Poston Butte and Lakeshore, Arizona, and Sar Chesmeh, Iran, also appear to fit this class. "Locomotive-type fanglomerates" are composed of poorly sorted conglomerates, lenticular sandstone beds, andesitic to rhyolitic flows and tuffs, and unique monothologic landslide breccias. They contain fragments of holyokeite - - a rare oligoclase lava of porcellaneous appearance. Their basal contacts are considered to be depositional and overlapping, sometimes complicated by later low-angle faulting. They arc quite different than the younger Cila, Pantano, and most "Whitetail" alluvial beds, and the older Amole, Recreation, Claflin Ranch, etc. elastics; in particular they are thinner and less widespread. Their ages are Eocene to late Oligocene. "Locomotive-type fanglomerates" may be genetically related to porphyry coppers as products of subsequent differentiation and volcanism, and sedimentation in short-lived basins of restricted area and extreme relief. They might be utilized as reconnaissance guides to target areas and as structural guides within target areas in the southwestern U.S., Northern Mexico, and elsewhere.

Covers a very broad spectrum of problems and solutions. The problems are multitudinous and their solutions are sometimes simplistic, sometimes ingenious and sometimes within a very broad interpretation of the law. However, one thing is quite certain: the problems and their solutions will have a direct impact upon corporate and personal well being. First of all, why does one mine in a foreign land? Since the Bronze Age, when ancient man discovered the metallurgy of copper, tin and zinc, intrepid souls have been wandering afield searching for and exploiting those mineral deposits which would create wealth and security for his city-state or community.

Strainburst phenomena, generally characterized by a sudden release of energy in a volume of highly stressed rock, are often encountered in such situations like crown pillar bursts in cut-and-fill mining, face bursts at development headings and floor bursts in deep shaft sinking. This paper describes a simple FE modeling approach which leads to the calculation of the energy release rate (ERR) and the total energy storage rate (TESR) in the rock mass around the openings. The merits of using such energy parameters in the analysis of strainburst problems to identify areas of high energy release/storage are discussed. However, much site-specific back analyses are needed to better understand how strainbursts and energy parameters are inter-related.

Sulfur is a nonmetallic element widely distributed in nature and of great physical and economic importance. It is the 14th most abundant element in the Earth's crust (0.06%) and an important constituent of animal and plant life. Sulfur has been known and used since ancient times for a number of medicinal and industrial uses. At present, most sulfur is used to generate sulfuric acid that is used in a wide variety of industrial processes, particularly the production of fertilizer. Because of this, sulfuric acid (and hence sulfur) consumption is often regarded as a good index of a nation's industrial development. In the past, sulfur was mined from surface occurrences in several geologic environments, and was used in relatively small amounts. With time, the uses of sulfur and sulfuric acid expanded, as has the need for larger quantities of these commodities. Sulfur is now mined from both surface and underground deposits, and is recovered as a byproduct from a number of industrial processes. Despite valiant efforts and years of work by sulfur explorationists and others, many aspects of sulfur mineralization remain controversial. Almost as controversial is the spelling of the word sulfur. The English spelling sulphur commonly is used outside America and in the American sulfur mining industry, but sulfur is the correct American spelling as approved by the American Chemical Society, the American Geological Institute, and many others. Those new to the American sulfur industry often find it puzzling to be reprimanded for using the correct American spelling. Sulfur resources are abundant and widespread, but the extent to which they can be classified as reserves is constrained by pre- vailing prices and extraction technologies. At present, sulfur can be economically mined from very few deposits. The sulfur industry is roughly divisible into two sectors: voluntary (or discretionary) and involuntary (or nondiscretionary). In voluntary production, the mining of sulfur or pyrites is the sole objective, and the recovery of the resource is as complete as economic conditions will allow. During involuntary production, sulfur or sulfuric acid (termed recovered sulfur) are produced as byproducts, and the quantity of the output is dictated by the demand for the primary product. Voluntary sulfur now accounts for only about 35% of the elemental sulfur produced worldwide, and most inves- tigators believe that voluntary sulfur will be less important in the future. Sulfur sources and products are described as follows (after Barker, 1983): Sulfur Sources: Combined sulfur-sulfur that occurs in nature combined with other elements, commonly referring to sulfides and sulfates. Cupriferous pyrites-pyrite containing minor amounts of cop- per sulfides. Hydrogen sulfide-a toxic gas that occurs in petroleum and natural gas. Involuntary sulfur-sulfur produced as a byproduct in response to legislative or process mandates. Native sulfur-naturally occurring elemental sulfur. Nonferrous metal sulfides-opper, lead, zinc, nickel, and molybdenum sulfides that are processed for their metal content. Organic sulfur complex organic sulfur compounds that occur in petroleum, coal, oil shale, and tar sands. Pyrites-iron sulfide minerals that include pyrite, marcasite, and pyrrhotite. Sulfate sulfur-sulfur contained in anhydrite and gypsum. Voluntary sulfur-sulfur produced in response to market demand. Basic Sulfur Products: Acid sludge-contaminated sulfuric acid usually returned to acid plants for reconstitution. Brimstone-synonymous with crude sulfur. Bright sulfur-crude sulfur free of discoloring impurities and bright yellow in color. Broken sulfur-solid crude sulfur crushed to -8 in. Byproduct sulfuric acid-sulfuric acid produced as a byproduct of a metallurgical or industrial process, generally relating to combined sulfur sources. Crude sulfur-commercial nomenclature for elemental sulfur. Dark sulfur-crude sulfur discolored by minor quantities of hydrocarbons, ranging up to 0.3% carbon content. Elemental sulfur-processed sulfur in the elemental form produced from native sulfur or combined sulfur sources, generally with a minimum sulfur content of 99.5%. Formed sulfur-elemental sulfur cast or pressed into particular shapes to enhance handling and to suppress dust generation and moisture retention. Frasch sulfur-elemental sulfur produced from native sulfur sources by the Frasch mining process. Liquid sulfur-synonymous with molten sulfur. Liquid sulfur dioxide-purified sulfur dioxide compressed to the liquid phase. Molten sulfur-crude sulfur in the molten state. Prilled sulfur-solid crude sulfur in the form of pellets produced by cooling molten sulfur in air or water. Recovered sulfur-elemental sulfur produced from combined sulfur sources (including byproduct hydrogen sulfide, but sometimes referring only to sulfur from fossil fuels) by any method. Slated sulfur-solid crude sulfur in the form of slate-like lumps, produced by allowing molten sulfur to solidify on a moving belt. Specialty sulfur-prepared or refined grades of elemental sulfur that include amorphous, colloidal, flowers, precipitated, wettable, flour, and paste sulfur. For the purpose of this discussion a small flotation concentrator is defined as a facility having a designed ore feed rate of 1,000 metric tons per day (MTPD), or less. The decision to design and construct a small flotation concentrator is the culmination of a series of logical steps relative to the ex¬ploitation of a potential ore body. The information required for a rational and timely decision regarding plant design and construction is usually contained in a feasibility report. The information required in a thorough feasibility report has been summarized (1) (2) as follows: Type of mine or plant and proposed daily, monthly, and yearly production of all intermediate and final products. Quantity of indicated ore reserves. Location of project illustrated by a map showing surroundings, trans-portation facilities, and existing utilities.

INTRODUCTION This paper is one of a series dealing with mining methods and costs, prepared and published under the sponsorship of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) and made possible through the cooperation of many mining companies in the US and foreign countries. The data presented have been obtained from papers previously published by the Bureau dealing with indi¬vidual mines, from the technical press, and from infor¬mation furnished by the mining companies. DEFINITIONS Top Slicing The term top slicing is commonly applied to that method of mining in which the ore is extracted by a series of timbered slices, beginning at the capping; the slice is caved, bringing down the capping to the floor of the slice; the succeeding lower slices are mined up to the overlying mat or gob, consisting of an accumulation of timber from the upper slices and broken capping, which follows the mining progressively downward (Fig. 1). The term has also come to be applied to the mining of ore bodies only one slice thick, by a series of tim¬bered slices one beside the other. The timbers are blasted out, bringing the capping down to the floor, suc¬ceeding slices being driven alongside those already caved (Fig. 2). In USBM classifications of mining methods, top slic¬ing has been placed under the heading caved stopes. The method differs fundamentally, however, from the cav¬ing methods of mining in which the breaking of the ore itself is accomplished by caving action induced by undercutting. In top slicing the ore is broken by the ordinary methods of drilling and blasting, and only the capping is broken up by caving. Main Levels or Haulage Levels Main or haulage levels are the main extraction levels on which the ore is hauled to the shaft. These levels and the shaft constitute the preliminary development of the mine.

The use of diesel-powered equipment in underground coal mines has increased substantially during the last ten years in an effort to enhance mine safety and productivity. Pennsylvania and West Virginia are two of a number of states with regulations governing the use of such equipment. These states both developed and promulgated regulations before permitting diesel equipment in their underground coal mines because of concern for miners’ safety and health, especially with regard to the contamination of mine ventilation air with diesel exhaust emissions. The major components of diesel exhaust emissions are combustion gases and diesel particulate matter. The gaseous emissions consist of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, sulfur oxides and unburned hydrocarbons. The diesel particulate matter (DPM) is comprised of solid carbon particles, liquid and solid hydrocarbons, sulfates and moisture. The Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) also promulgated regulations in an effort to control diesel emissions in underground coal mines. MSHA has adopted threshold limit values (TLVs) for all gaseous components of diesel exhaust, which were established by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). MSHA (30 CFR Part 72 Subpart D) has established a tailpipe DPM emissions limit of 2.5 g/hr for diesel engines used in permissible equipment, heavy-duty non-permissible equipment, generators and compressors used in underground coal mines. A tailpipe DPM limit of 5.0 g/hr has been established for light-duty outby diesel-powered equipment. The rationale for the tailpipe emissions limit was that an ambient measurement of DPM in a coal mine was not feasible because there is no established sampling method able to distinguish between coal mine dust and DPM. The stringent tailpipe emissions limit mandates the use of exhaust aftertreatment devices for most diesel engines used in underground coal mines today. One method by which tailpipe DPM can be reduced to MSHA limits involves using an exhaust cooling device in conjunction with a high-temperature, disposable diesel particulate filter.

As surface minable coal is depleted, many operators look to high-wall mining to extend reserve life. Recent advances in highwall mining equipment have greatly improved productivity, clean coal recovery, and attainable penetration beneath the highwall. Somewhat lagging have been systematic design approaches for ensuring web pillar and overall highwall stability. This paper presents an overview of the design, planning, and field performance of a multiple-seam highwall mining application in southwest Wyoming. The safety and efficiency obtained to date is attributable to the careful geotechnical and operational planning described herein. Field confirmation of performance and suggestions for improvement are also discussed.

It can be useful to model the mean grade values for a metal in mineral deposits containing that metal as representing the extreme value tail of a lognormal frequency distribution for the concentration values of the metal in rocks of all types. Results for copper and zinc in the Abitibi area of the Canadian Shield are compared to results previously obtained for the Canadian Appalachian Region. The lognormal model is also applied to a set of 162 large gold deposits in the Abitibi area. In the second part of the paper, 1311 large and small gold deposits in the Abitibi area are modelled as discrete events. By means of a newly developed spatial clustering model it is possible to predict the variances of random variables for frequencies of deposits in cells of different sizes.

The utilization of high sulfur Illinois coal by utility plants has been decreasing since the enactment of 1990 Clean Coal Air Act Amendment. Illinois coal producers can make their coal saleable by offering the choice of taking the combustion by-products from the utility plants and placing them in the abandoned sections of their mines. To be competitive, however, coal producers need to select an environmentally acceptable transportation-handling-placement system through which the cost-per-ton of by-product disposed can be minimized. In this paper, a few such systems are presented. The favorable operating range of each system is determined in terms of distance and tonnage. A case study is given whereby cost analysis is conducted for an underground coal mine receiving by-products from two Illinois utility plants.

Deep open-pit mines are becoming increasingly common in the highly mineralized arctic and sub-arctic regions. Air inversion is a frequent occurrence in these regions, and is exacerbated by complex geometry of the open pit and the surrounding natural topography of an open-pit mine. The resulting inversion cap is known to contribute to the degradation of air quality in the open pit, resulting in loss of production. This paper discusses the development and validation of a three-dimensional model that simulate the flow of air and the transport of gaseous contaminants in an arctic open-pit mine and the analyzes effect of the geometry of the mine and the slope angle of the pit on the contaminants profiles in the mine.

"This paper describes the innovative full-face conventional tunnel excavation technology, with its advantages in terms of savings and safety. The full-face approach has been developed throughout the experiences gained in tunnel construction. The innovative design approach is focused primarily on the deformation response of the ground acting first and foremost ahead of the face, which is analyzed, predicted and controlled by pre-confinement of the core. The advantage of this method is particularly evident in difficult grounds. This paper will present the outstanding benefits given by the adoption of the full-face approach in two projects, the “Sochi” and the “Visnove” tunnels. THEORY AND DESIGN ASPECTS OF THE FULL-FACE EXCAVATION The main challenges in tunnel and underground construction industry are gathering the design data from the ground that is being excavated and foreseeing the critical stage during construction, where the materials are in its most critical configuration. These challenges shall be addressed during excavation when the lining and the excavation disturbance have not yet reach the equilibrium. The in situ stresses in the ground are redistributed (forming an “arch-effect”) around the opening, with zones of increased stresses around the walls of the excavation (Figure 1). The distribution of the stresses can be close or far from the excavation profile, depending upon having a ground capable of withstanding the deviated stresses well or unable to withstand them, respectively. In the latter case, the ground will plasticize and deform in proportion to the volume of ground involved in the plasticization phenomenon. When the ground completely cannot withstand the stresses redistribution, it will cause the collapse of the excavation. While in the first case, the arch effect occurs naturally, in the second case, it does occur naturally only when the ground is stabilized properly. In the case of collapse, the arch-effect must be produced artificially operating on the ground prior excavation. The design should be based on the understanding of if and how the arch-effect can be mobilized during tunnel excavation and ensure that is formed by calibrating excavation and stabilization operations appropriately. The arch-effect is function of the medium that is being excavated, the action taken to excavate and the reaction expected following the excavation."

The object of this study was to evaluate the oxidized taconites of the western Mesabi iron range and to establish a correlation between the various basic taconite types and their concentratability. This study was made at the Mines Experiment Station of the University of Minnesota under the sponsorship of the Great Northern Railway Company. The initial work included a study of the original mineralogical and stratigraphic facies of the fresh taconite and traced the oxidation and leaching patterns developed during the conversion of this material to oxidized taconite. Subsequent studies have extended this work to include the semi- taconites and also the wash and heavy media ore types widely developed in the area. Each basic, original mineralogical facies or taconite type produces during alteration an equivalent secondary oxidized facies which has a unique mineralogical composition and texture. These control the concentratability of the oxidized taconites. Actually the influence of the original mineralogical composition of the iron formation extends even further and determines whether the most likely product of oxidation and leaching will be a wash ore or a heavy media ore and even to the direct shipping ores where the ratio of hematite to goethite is largely determined by the original taconite type.

Miss Gertrude Carey lived next to us in Martinsburg, West Virginia for several years. She was a retired school teacher. She was also a cousin to Messers Dan and Joe Baker who owned and operated Standard Lime and Stone Company, a predecessor of Martin Marietta Corporation. She-was well acquainted with the Baker family and their history. Here is one of the legends she told my wife, Jean, and me. The Bakers were originally Tanners. They had a tannery near Frederick, Maryland. There were several boys in the family and when they were grown each man had specified responsibilities. Will Baker was assigned the duty of locating, buying, and transporting tanbark and lime. As he traveled through Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia to locate and buy tanbark, he also talked the farmers out of some pieces of lime, which the farmers had produced in holes dug and filled with layers of limestone and wood. Will Baker took the lime and soaked a piece of hide in the milk of lime. If the lime did not spot the hide, Will Baker would get the farmer to burn some lime for him, and further tests would be made. If these tests were good - the Bakers bought the land. They eventually discovered that the limestone that would make lime that wouldn't spot the hide would also be suitable for producing steel. They began producing lime just outside Harpers Ferry, West Virginia in pots and upright kilns. That stone too small for the kilns was just perfect for railroad ballast. Now you know how "Baltimore Blue Bloods" got together!!
