"INTRODUCTION Located in the state of Colima, Peña Colorada is one of the largest iron ore operations in Mexico. The project is owned in equal parts by ArcelorMittal and Ternium. Though boasting a production capacity of 4.5 million tons of concentrate per year, Peña Colorada is faced with declining ore grades. In order to respond to this situation, Peña Colorada had to expand production even further. This expansion created various challenges that were overcome by the adoption and application of new technology. Examples of these technological innovations are discussed in detail in this paper and include improvements in geo-modeling, mine planning and mine operations. The successful implementation of these technologies paid for itself many times over, and has led to significant improvements in production and performance, while lowering the operating costs and reducing the variance between planning and execution. PROJECT OVERVIEW Peña Colorada is a mining company which produces about 30% of the iron ore in Mexico. This project generates about 1,200 direct jobs and 3,000 indirect jobs, making a significant contribution to the local economy. Similarly, Peña Colorada invests in its local communities through numerous educational programs, scholarships, university agreements, social development, environmental agreements, etc. Peña Colorada’s operations consist of an open pit mine located in Minatitlán and a pellet plant located in the port city of Manzanillo, as shown in the location map below:TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS Most mining projects around the world typically follow the logic of “mining the next best ore”. Consequently, head grades tend to decline over the life of the mine. In the case of Peña Colorada, a decline in head grade combined with a decline in iron ore prices forced the operation to adapt to a new business environment and adopt new technologies to face these challenges. However, the first step along this process was to increase the confidence and reliability of the resource model. This task involved additional drillhole campaigns coupled with more detailed modeling techniques. Once the block model was completed, new optimization studies and production schedules were evaluated with new optimization tools that unlocked significant project value in many aspects of the mine plan. Similarly, new geotechnical studies were prepared, which provided new guidelines for pit slope design, and new technology was implemented to monitor ground movement and slope stability. Utah Power and Light Company's Deer Creek Mine had been developed to a point where mine ventilation efficiency had declined to an unacceptable level. Problems identified were ventilation of inactive areas, excessive leakage, and restrictions in the return and intake air ways. Mine management implemented an intensive mine ventilation improvement program to alleviate future problems with respirable dust in the working sections and diesel equipment emissions. Program objectives included sealing of inactive areas of the mine, rehabilitation of high resistance areas, and construction of additional intake and return aircourses. Applications of computer modeling techniques are used to predict the effects of ventilation changes and improvements. Improvements are then prioritized to achieve the largest efficiency increases first. Actual real time assessment of the mine environment and ventilation changes are accomplished with a mine wide monitoring computer system. The Deer Creek ventilation improvement program has more than doubled the ventilating efficiency of the mine.

One of the chief sources of the world's supply of asbestos lies in a belt of ultrabasic rocks which runs northeastward through an area called the Eastern Townships, south of the St. Lawrence River in the Province of Québec. The productive portion of this belt extends from the town of Asbestos in the south, for a distance of some 9,5 km to beyond the village of East-Broughton. The first discovery of asbestos in this region was made in 1874. Only crude fibre was produced until 1888 when the first mill was erected near the town of Black Lake. Since the inception of the industry, almost 100 years ago, no less than 100 different compa¬nies have been formed and 46 different mines have been operated. There are presently 5 active companies in the area providing direct employment for 4100 workers, down from 6000 during the seventies.

Absorbent clays are products, usually in the form of granules, that can absorb and hold approximately their own weight of liquids while essentially maintaining their size and integrity. They always contain in abundance at least one of three materials: montmorillonite, attapulgite and diatomite. The first two are complex silicates; the last is amorphous silica of biogenic origin. Not all montmorillonites provide the base for an absorbent clay, however. Nevertheless, the silicates in particular, and the diatomite to a lesser degree, have certain molecular properties that give rise to the useful physical properties. Uses Use of absorbent clays is as old as civilization. Numerous references to "fuller's earth" appear in ancient writings, including the Bible. Fuller's earth originally connated a clay that could absorb oil and grease from wool to facilitate cleaning. Robertson (1986) covers the fascinating history in interesting detail. In the modern sense, absorbent clays find application in three principal areas, and a host of minor ones. Industrial floor absorbents, cat litter and agricultural carriers comprise the major uses.

Developing a mining venture in a foreign country, particularly in South Africa, can be a real challenge to those involved in the operation. The mining division of Southland Energy Corp. was asked to offer consultative support to the New Union Gold Mine, located in the Giyani District, Transvaal, Republic of South Africa, to aid in their expansion from an approximately 65 tonne per day exploration- exploitation project into a full scale mining operation of 300 tpd by January, 1987 with further expansion to 600 tpd by mid-year. This paper ad- dresses the development of the expansion plans, which are presently being implemented. History. Located in the Northern Transvaal, Republic of South Africa, the New Union Gold Mine is part of what is known as the Klein Letaba gold fields. Gold prospecting in the Klein Letaba gold field area dates back to the earliest years of European prospecting activities in the Transvaal where, reportedly, gold was discovered as early as 1887 (figure 1). The claims com- prising the present New Union Gold Mine have been explored by a number of individuals and relatively small mining groups since the early 1930's. The work done by these entities was aimed at recovering as much gold as possible in the quickest and cheapest manner possible and, as a result, the area was not explored in a systematic fashion. The long-term potential of the area, therefore, was not known until very recently.

The Putnam Coal Mine, at design capacity, will be the third largest underground bituminous coal mine in the world and will feature the world's longest single flight belt conveyor. Construction is now in process; initial mining will commence in early 1969 and design capacity will be reached in 1971. I'm Jerry Workman, Assistant Mining Manager for the Coal Group of the Mining and Metals Division of Union Carbide Corporation, and I am acting as Project Manager for installation and start-up of the Putnam Mine. The Putnam Coal Mine reserves are located in south-central West Virginia and contain approximately 27,000 acres of prime Pittsburgh No. 8 coal; reserves are sufficient to support a 3.5 MM tons per year operation for over 30 years. The mine portal area is located some six miles inland from the Kanawha River. The river loading facility is located approximately 156 miles by way of river from the market.

The concept of ultrasonic measurement was originally applied to marine operations. Sonar . . . standing for Sounding, Navigation and Ranging, was developed for military uses. Today Sonar has become very important to the fishing fleets and marine construction industries where its applications cover a wide range of uses our company, in addition to the inair ultrasonic equipment as discussed in this paper, is also deeply involved in marine sonar and works primarily with oceanographic research and fishing industries. Ultrasonics, by simple definition, are sound waves beyond the audible range of the human ear and are generally accepted to be waves over 20,000 cycles per second. When applied to level measurement, the principles of ultrasonics are basically quite simple. A sound pulse is initiated at a point in time and the time interval for the echo from that pulse to return can be interpolated into distance. The speed of sound in air under standard conditions is approximately 1,100 feet per second, or if converted into more meaningful information as related to distance measurement, the time required for sound to travel one foot round trip is 1.78 milliseconds. An early application for ultrasonic level monitoring equipment was in large grain elevators. Prior to ultrasonics, the common practice of inventory measurement was to have an employee walk around the top of these large grain elevators, which are often over 100 feet above ground level, and drop a weighted rope or chain down into the silo to determine the level of the grain. When BHP Copper's Lower Kalamazoo Project commenced production in January 1997, two of the four original hoists had been converted to hoist ore from the Lower K level. Conversions on these hoists not only allowed hoisting from a much deeper level, but also created a higher hoisting efficiency and higher capacity as well. Conversions included new drums, new cables, SCR drives and other solid state control technologies not available when the original hoists were installed. Two of the original hoists were installed in the 1950's and the other two were installed in the 1970's.

The testing of different kinds of process flow configurations and cell volumes in industrial scale flotation processes is in general difficult to accomplish and even expensive to perform.1 Also the lack of suitable measuring and analyzing devices often prevents effective comparison of results. Nowadays, the existing flotation processes contain, almost with exception, several return loads which result in difficult control of the process. There exist two good reasons for testing different kinds of flotation circuits at the Outokumpu Oy Kotalahti mine. Firstly it is easy to change the process flow configuration without any additional installation work and secondly, the concentrator is highly automated with magnetic flow meters, on-line analyzer and process computers. In this presentation, open circuit flotation is compared with the classical closed circuit flotation which contains return loads. In additional, the effectiveness of computer control in both cases is estimated and also the effect of cell volume on flotation results is examined.

"INTRODUCTION As we push further into the 21st century and closer to a more efficient mine, safety and operational enhancements are the two major keys towards attaining success. The Crusher Vision Automation System (CVAS) is a technological advance that will allow an operator to achieve higher safety and higher operational goals in the same piece of equipment. The CVAS is a patent pending system and method for measuring and maintaining the closed side setting (CSS) on gyratory crushers. In the same equipment and technology package, the CVAS will also allow safer placement of main shaft pieces for maintenance and replacement. This technology yields multiple uses and allows a site to significantly enhance safety and operational efficiencies. This measurement technique is used to provide more accurate data and faster data collection times than current techniques used today. It will give crusher operators accurate and reliable measurement for the CSS in a live, operating environment. Measurement data can be collected in five minutes allowing for fast adjustment of the mantle position and subsequent enhancement and streamlining of a crusher and downstream flowsheet. The advantage of this system is that it is permanently mounted at the crusher location, where the operator can turn the system on and off as many times as they like throughout the day with a goal of maintaining a constant CSS gap based on production and maintenance criteria to help streamline operations and enhance safety efficiencies.Regarding its other main functional area, mainshaft maintenance, it allows this work to be performed remotely while keeping personnel safer and out of harm’s way. SAFETY ENHANCEMENT The safety factor enhancement with this system is extreme. It does not require the use of overhead cranes, cleaning out the crusher, lowering people into the crusher or having the operator lower paint cans or lead balls into the crusher pocket while the crusher is in operation for measuring the setting. In order to perform the CSS measurements, the operator only needs to operate the laser through manipulation of a joystick while watching the video feed. Danger of a person falling into the crusher while trying to take measures is eliminated, as are the effects of handling lead balls and tracer dyes."

Rubidium and cesium were discovered by Bunsen and Kirchhoff about 100 years ago. These two elements are by no means as abundant as sodium or potassium. Their occurrence in minerals is widespread, but usually as minor constituents. There is no known specific ore containing rubidium, but rubidium is found replacing the. other alkali metals in .some minerals.. Perhaps the highest concentration of rubidium found in one mineral is in lepidolite, KLi(OH,F)2A12Si3010, which contains from 0 to 3.5%*Rb20. 0n the average, lepidolite contains about 0.5% Rb20. Other sources of rubidium are carnallite, KMgCl3?6H20; pollucite, H20.2Cs20.2AI203.9SiO2; rhodizite, R20.2A1203-3B203; biotite, H2K(Mg,Fe)3A1(Si04)3; sea water, rivers, marine and fresh water organisms, soils, and plants. Cesium, even though it is the least abundant. of the stable alkalies, has a specific ore. Pollucites a hydrous cesium aluminum silicate, may con¬tain as high as 42.5% Cs20, although again, the average Cs20 content is about 25% among the handful of known deposits. Other cesium-containing minerals are lepidolite and carnallite. Rubidium and cesium are very much like potassium in chemical properties, consequently, they are hard to separate. Because of the difficulty in obtaining pure cesium and rubidium compounds coupled with the scarcity-of supply, prices were high and the two elements enjoyed little industrial use. "BACKGROUND The design, development, fabrication, and test of a cryogenic supply for a refuge alternative is part of a larger effort funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and managed through a Space Act Agreement with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration at the Kennedy Space Center, FL to create cryogenically based life support equipment responsive to the needs of miners as required by the Miner Act of 2008. This work is done by a joint contractor/NASA team. In particular, the Cryogenic Refuge Alternative Supply System (CryoRASS) serves to provide a respirable air source to miners confined for 96 hours in a mine refuge alternative. This system stores liquid air in a zero-loss cryogenic reservoir (Dewar) until an emergency requires use. The system does not require electric power when in use by miners. Because of the very cold nature of the liquid air, considerable heat stress relief and reduction of humidity is provided in addition to the required replenishment of oxygen. Moderate dilution of CO2 also occurs.INTRODUCTION The design of this new cryogenic refuge alternative supply system (CryoRASS) uses NASA/Kennedy Space Center technology as a development baseline. The design stores cryogenic (liquid) air that is warmed in an air handler box and the resulting gaseous air is introduced to the chamber that not only causes air circulation, but relies upon environmental and human heat to expand the liquid air to a gaseous state. Therefore, the primary benefits of the liquid air source, besides atmosphere maintenance (oxygen), is refuge cooling and dehumidification. This results in reduction of human heat stress and this occurs without the need for electrical power in the refuge chamber. This reduction is a major factor in ""apparent heat"" and the human perception of comfort. Another benefit with introduction of ""air"" vs only ""oxygen"" is the dilution of carbon dioxide. The volume of new air will displace existing refuge air and this air laden with humidity/CO2/low O2 passes out of the refuge relief valves. These RVs should be strategically placed to vent stagnant air preferentially. An initial system test was conducted in our Florida facility in a production 10-person hard chamber for 96 hours. Last year (2014) the system was tested with a 23 person inflatable refuge alternative in Bruceton. For this test, the CryoRASS air handler was redesigned to offer superior characteristics when installed in a Built-in-Place refuge alternative. This report describes the results of the modified system being tested in the Pittsburgh Experimental Mine while attached to a 30 person refuge for 96 (+/-) hours."

Determining the identicalness levels of the same model trucks working in open pit mine transportation system by means of statistical analysis methods is very significant in terms of availability analysis. In this study, the identicalness levels of two trucks picked randomly from the 170-short-tonne truck fleet working in open pit coal mine over one-year period were examined through a non-parametric test, Mann-Whitney U test for two samples. Time to failures (TTFs) and Time to Repairs (TTRs) of the trucks were analyzed with this test technique and then whether they were identical or not was determined. In order to determine whether the trucks identified to be identical at the end of this test displayed the same mining performances within the same open pit transportation system, the availability analysis of the identical trucks was carried out. As a result of the availability analysis, it was observed that the trucks had availability values that were very close to each other. It was also determined that Mann-Whitney U test could be employed together with availability analysis. Finally, it was observed that Mann-Whitney U test for two samples could yield rapid results in the performance analysis of complex systems like open pit mines.

There are several limestone deposits around the Lohja area in southern Finland. Raw material for cement rock is mined from some of them. The formations are geologically complicated, and therefore selective mining is used whenever possible. One of these mines is the Tytyri underground limestone mine, which is divided into two parts; Törmä and Solhem. In addition to the selective mining system hand sorting or picking must be used at the Tytyri mine to improve the overall grade of the blended limestone. Some means were needed in order to improve the quality and to increase the feed rate by the elimination of hand sorting. Sorting machines were considered and eventually a Sortex 811MW was pilot plant tested at the Ojamo mine near Tytyri. This machine now continues to be used on production.

Due to its low mine production costs, competitive rail rates and low sulfur content, the Southern Powder River Basin (SPRB) now commands 30 percent of the U.S. utility coal market. In 1996, production exceeded 260 million tons, a growth of 110 million tons since 1989 and 15 million tons over 1995. Continued growth is expected as the second phase of the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA) looms. This growth will be the greatest in the southern part of the basin, where coal quality is higher. This article is an overview of supply and demand issues affecting markets for SPRB coal. It reviews the current markets for SPRB coal and addresses future prospects for market expansion.

An historic underground copper mine in Wyoming is discharging neutral but copper-laden water into a pristine creek. The EPA-deferred site qualifies for reclamation by the Wyoming Abandoned Mine Land (AML) program; restoring the discharge so that the creek can eventually support a trout fishery is the cleanup goal. Hydrological and geochemical investigations underground have suggested two sources of mine water: one clean and the other copper-containing. Results of bench-scale and pilot-scale tests support the viability of using low-cost passive treatment techniques to reduce copper concentrations in the near-freezing mine discharge.

On-line analyzers have made possible the use of Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) for local control applications in coal preparation plants. This includes FLC control of complete circuits such as heavy media vessels, cyclones and froth flotation. These circuits can be controlled in real time in a feedback control loop with an on-line analyzer. Control strategies can be readily developed using Statistical Process Control (SPC) techniques which are first applied off-line in manual mode through the use of control charts and then this process is brought on-line using FLC in conjunction with an on-line analyzer to fully automate the circuit. This paper outlines the types of control strategies employed and presents examples of automatic verses manual control.

"In order to sustain the operations in chromite processing plants, due to concentrate selling cost, plants are in need of optimization in terms of capacity and recovery increase. In this study, DAMA Engineering carried out a methodological study for the purpose after a detailed sampling campaign in a plant which is situated in one the main chromite zones in Turkey; 1 The current status of the plant was investigated quantitatively with the bottlenecks, Plant overall efficiency in terms of recovery, Efficiencies of the particular equipment (mill, screen, gravity circuit), 2 A new circuit was proposed with the available equipment, 3 The new circuit that is product of modeling and experimental effort, was evaluated quantitatively as if it is a running plant, After 4-5 months continuous effort, the capacity of the plant was almost doubled (37 tph to 70 tph) and the plant overall recovery was increased from 48% to 63% by grinding adjustments and additional shaking tables theoretically. It was shown that the plant may move into profit with the minimum amount investment using readily available system. INTRODUCTION TO THE CURRENT PLANT The objective of the study is to increase the capacity and recovery of the chromite plant owned by Kurmel Group, Akmetal Inc. The complete study is given elsewhere (DAMA, 2016). The plant is situated in one of the main chromite zones in Turkey; Aladag. The current capacity of the plant is around 35 tph and the overall recovery declared by plant engineer is around 47 %. The chromite plant mainly has 3 units; crushing, grinding and gravitational circuits. The crushing circuit has 3 stages; a jaw crusher, a secondary cone crusher and a tertiary cone crusher operating in closed circuit with a vibrating screen with the aperture size of 15mm. In grinding circuit, a rod mill (2.44 6m x 3.6) and a ball mill (2.13 x 2.3m) are used for primary and secondary grinding, respectively. Derrick screens are used for the size separation. Additionally, for the size classification of the system, hydrosizers are used and each size fraction is sent to the shaking table sets. The middling product of the tables is subjected to re-grinding with a ball mill with the dimensions of 2.1 x 2.9 m. The capacity and the recovery are affected by several bottle necks; hydrosizers’ pure classification, primary/secondary mill power vs capacity problems, re-grinding product’s high slime content and so on. These combined factors made the plant to run in low recovery and capacity. Hence, DAMA was asked to make a study to investigate current status of the plant and propose a new solution to increase capacity and recovery of the plant. The conceptual flowsheet of the circuit is given in Figure 1 below."

I am deeply honored and grateful to receive the prestigious Gaudin Award. Frankly, I find myself amazed to be included in the company of those outstanding individuals who have previously received this recognition. I am humbly honored to receive this award from an industrial research group. Gaudin was an internationally respected leader of mineral processing. His research contributions widely covered the whole spectrum of mineral processing science and technology, including comminution, size distribution, electrostatics, magnetics, thickening and, especially, the development of flotation theory and application. In his later career, he increased his emphasis on hydrometallurgical technology. In fact, one of his most notable practical contributions was in the development of leaching and ion exchange purification of uranium from low-grade ores. Gaudin catalyzed the trend in mineral processing toward engineering science for a better understanding of process mechanisms and kinetics. He said that those working in academic fields should have an underlying responsibility to the industry they represent. This imposed on him the objective of seeking out research areas that had some relevance to industry's problems. He said, "research without an audience cannot survive." Gaudin performed a most vital service, both in the areas of research in which he was actively involved and through his less-direct influence on current research by his many former students and their students in turn. Interestingly, Gaudin's strength has influenced Newmont Mining Corp. His favorite student was Plato Malozemoff. He had a long and distinguished career with Newmont, beginning as staff engineer in 1945, serving as Newmont's president for more than 30 years and as chairman of the company for 20 years. Newmont's greatest growth occurred during his leadership. Another one of Gaudin's graduate students from Montana School of Mines, Oscar F. Tangel, joined Newmont in 1967. He was a vice president of research and development until 1986. In their efforts, Newmont built a research group, developing the technologies of exploration, geophysics and metallurgy. The Newmont technical facility is named in honor of Malozamoff as "a leader in the development and implementation of new technologies." The mining industry is facing very difficult times, especially in the metals industry. Most metal prices have declined and are still not stable. Most domestic mining companies have largely done away with in-house research and development. Many are reluctant to invest in technology development for which there is not an immediate need. The metal mining industries are focusing on reducing operating costs to survive. Newmont is in the same situation. I appreciate that Newmont's management believes in the importance of research and technology and the impact technology has on the company's value. At Newmont, technology development involves working in the area of applied research. The connections from academic fundamental research to applied research and finally to process development and implementation are very important to develop a new technology. Fundamental research is our foundation, our guidance, giving us direction, providing the principal and mechanism and understanding why it works. Understanding the why will lead to further innovative development. Applied research needs to find the approach to reality, how it works, how to make it better and how to commercialize it. Process development and implementation needs a strong leadership, requires long-term commitment, makes improvements in practical engineering and finally develops an economically favorable process. Implementation is the most important stage in making research a reality. Each stage needs to give feedback to the other stages. Problems need to be understood and solved. Gentlemen: I am pleased and regard it as a priviledge to give you a report on rapid roadheading with heading machines in the coal mining industry of Western Germany. Importance of Heading Operations in the West German Coal Mining Industry Every year about 770 km of headings are driven In the seams of the West German coal mines, most of them gate roads, the rest rise headings, to open new faces. In thick seams the heading operations are carried out entirely in the coal, in thin seams the country rock has to be ripped. The total length of 770 km corresponds to a rock volume of roughly 9.5 million m3; this figure underlines the importance of the heading operations in the coal mining industry of our country.
