Introduction The separation of minerals from complex sulfide ores by flotation requires careful control of the surface chemical behaviors of the minerals constituting the ores. When the minerals in the ore are finely disseminated, extremely fine grinding is needed to liberate the minerals. Fine grinding is not only an energy-intensive operation, but also influences the flotation behaviors of liberated minerals. Steel balls are commonly used for grinding. Galvanic interactions occur not only between sulfide minerals and grinding media but also among the different sulfide minerals themselves. The electrochemical characteristics of chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite when they are independently coupled with steel grinding media and the relevance of these characteristics to the flotation behavior of these minerals have been exten¬sively studied (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992: Li and Iwasaki, 1992). These studies dealt with reactions in two electrode combinations, simulating mineral-grinding medium and mineral-mineral interactions. In practice, however, it is more common to involve more than one sulfide mineral. In a study of a pyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system, Pozzo et al. (1989) provided evidence that a mineral having an intermediate potential could behave differently, depending on the condi¬tion of galvanic contact. This investigation was undertaken to study a chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system to gain better in¬sight into the mechanism of multiple galvanic interactions. A three-electrode system was chosen to simulate a typical copper sulfide ore. The sulfide minerals were represented by chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite. The grinding medium was rep¬resented by mild steel. The nature of galvanic interactions involving these minerals and grinding medium in an oxygen atmosphere was investigated in a three-electrode combina¬tion, and an attempt was made to relate the laboratory flotation results of pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite ores. Possible implications to the differential flotation of complex sulfide ores are discussed. Key words: Electrochemistry, Flotation, Sulfide ores Experimental The pyrrhotite (57.74% Fe, 0.09% Cu, 4.84% Ni and 36.54% S) sample was obtained from Falconbridge Ltd.'s Strathcona mine, Ontario, Canada, and the chalcopyrite (26.00% Cu, 28.57% Fe, 0.05% Ni and 31.52% S) sample came from Transvaal, South Africa. Mild steel (AISI 1020, 0.2% C) was chosen to represent grinding media. A conventional three-electrode cell was used in the elec¬trochemical measurements. The working, counter and refer¬ence electrodes were, respectively, sulfide minerals or mild steel, graphite rod and saturated calomel electrode (SCE, 0.245 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode). The exposed areas of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium electrodes were approximately the same (0.17 to 0.19 cm2). The preparation methods of working electrodes, the reagents used, the experi¬mental procedures and the instrumentation were the same as those described previously (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992). Rest potentials of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and mild steel were measured individually in 0.05-M sodium sulfate solu¬tions. Combination potentials and galvanic currents of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium were measured in short-circuited two- and three-electrode systems. All poten¬tials in this study are quoted in volts with respect to the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE). The Republic of Botswana, one of the newer countries of southern Africa, attained independence on September 30, 1966. It covers an area of about 225,000 square miles (582,000 square kilometers) which makes it slightly larger than France, or slightly smaller than Texas. It is bounded by Zimbabwe, the Republic of South Africa and Namibia, including the Caprivi Strip. Angola and Zambia are close neighbors. (Map 1). Botswana lies at the center of the southern African plateau at a mean elevation of 3,300 feet (1,000 m). It is a natural habitat for most species of African fauna. The rolling sands and extensive grasslands of the Kalahari Desert cover the southwest. The climate is sub- tropical. Summers, although tempered by north- easterly breezes, are hot, but mean maximum temperature seldom rises above 100°F (38°C). Winters are dry with wide temperature variations, which often give rise to frosts.

Statistical studies at Cyprus Pima Mine indicate that samples from 22 blastholes are necessary for determining average copper grades, within a desired range of precision, for mine-model blocks by arithmetic averaging. The average number of holes in such blocks is 14. Many considerations show that more holes will not be drilled for sampling. A way to determine block grades more reliably than by" arithmetic averaging was sought. Thus far arithmetic averaging has proven to be the best procedure for the particular operation characteristics despite the small number of samples. It naturally follows that expenditure of great effort in sampling blasthole cuttings is unwise.

The title of the paper which I have been asked to present is somewhat misleading it infers in fact that there is a definite coalbed height below which raps or canopies cannot be applied to electric face equipment. Although this may be so with regard to certain pieces of existing equipment under certain conditions, to date we do not have enough experience to determine this magic number. Therefore MESA is continuing to hold the line on the time frames stipulated in Section 75.1710-1 of the Mandatory Safety Standards - Underground Coal Mines, which at this point in time requires these protective structures in mining heights of 60 inches or more. In order to give you an idea why we are taking such a firm stand on this matter, I believe it is necessary to describe some of the background work that was done prior to promulgation of the regulations and to give a resume of our experience since the requirements have become effective. Initially MESA made field investigations of all underground mines to determine what the state of the art was in the use of cabs and canopies for protecting equip¬ment operators from falls of roof. These studies revealed that the application was basically in its infancy and what progress had been made was due to the impetus of the mine operators themselves. Manufacturers of electric face equip¬ment provided these structures only on the direct order from the mining company and built them to their specifications. In talking to the operators and the miners in mines where cabs or canopies were in use, it was the consensus that these structures did improve safety and that although originally there was some reluctance on the part; of the miners to work in the confines of a cab or canopy, mast would not work without them once they had been adapted to the equipment.

A large portion of the energy consumed in copper concentrators is used to reduce the particle size of the feed by crushing and grinding. The cost of metal production could be reduced if low-grade particles of cm size were removed prior to further processing. Two copper sulfide ore samples (3 × 1 cm) from Arizona were analyzed by micro X-ray computed tomography (Micro-XCT) to determine the grade of copper sulfide in each particle. For copper ore sample A, a significant number of particles contained very low amounts of copper, while some particles had copper sulfide grains of mm size. Based on Micro-XCT, it was expected that 85% of the copper for sample A could be recovered at 65% of mass rejection during preconcentration by sorting. However, in sample B (a different copper ore), distribution of copper sulfide was dispersed primarily in each ore particle, so for the particle size class of 3 × 1 cm, liberation of copper sulfide and gangue minerals was not significant. In view of the XCT results, dual energy (DE) X-ray radiography was used as a basis for sorting. Previous DE X-ray radiography of a drill core sample demonstrated that this rapid detection method can be used to identify rich or poor Cu-bearing coarse particles. Pilot scale X-ray sorting of sample A (10 × 1 cm) showed 31% rejection of a 0.08% Cu gangue product with a corresponding recovery of 90% copper.

White Pine Copper Company, a subsidiary of Copper Range Company located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, mines a Precambrian sedimentary deposit containing finely disseminated chalcocite, native cop- per and native silver. Silver occurs predominately in certain strata and presently provides a mill head averaging 0.25 ounces per ton. This technical publication traces the development of silver recovery at White Fine beginning in early 1961. White Pine refined copper contains an excess of silver over and above that required to impart Lake Copper properties. The copper does not require electrolytic refining to meet industry purity requirements, nor is there sufficient silver to justify electrolysis.

Spray drying is the principal drying method used in the production of over six million tons annually of beneficiated kaolin in Georgia. Thirty-three dryers in the Georgia Kaolin belt comprise the highest concentration of large tonnage spray dryers in the world. The steady growth of spray drying in the U.S. kaolin industry is paced by advances in design and development of large spray dryers which have led to large scale new applications in mining and related industries.

A new method of slaking lime has been developed by DENVER EQUIPMENT DIVISION of Joy Industrial Equipment Company and patented under U. S. Patent 4,261,953. The new method utilizes an attrition machine, commonly used in mineral processing circuits as a sand scrubbing device, to slake lime. The scrubbing effect of the attrition slaker continuously produces a fresh reactive surface so that further slaking may occur. This process allows for utilization of slaking all grades of burnt lime and most grades of dolomite lime. Testing indicates that poor grades of water usually not considered for this service can now be tolerated using the attrition slaker. The slaked lime produced is of higher quality, faster reacting and much less apt to produce scaling problems than previously experienced. The attrition slaker can be combined with a spiral classifier and ball mill to eliminate any need for grit handling or grit removal. The attrition slaker can be designed for all burnt lime tonnages up to the limit of 175 tph and 1" pebble lime size. Control can be maintained easily with minimal operator assistance. The equipment, the principals of process metallurgy, and the above topics will be presented.

The concept of the system is to minimize costly unscheduled breakdowns of equipment by replacing components earlier than their "life" expectancy. Periodic unit services are scheduled according to pre-set constraints. Service sheets are generated by matching a job and component master listing based on assigned cyclic component lives. The system can provide accountability of all man-hours reported and history information can be selectively retrieved. By reducing unscheduled equipment shutdowns, this system allows for better utilization of manpower and an overall improvement in equipment reliability and availability.

The main objective of the present investigation is to demonstrate the potential of ERT (Electrical Resistivity Tomography) and HVSR (Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio) methods as geophysical tools for the monitoring of subsurface cavities. The survey sites are located in Akrotirion Peninsula, almost 7 km east of Hania town in Crete Island, Greece. At this site, the surface expression of a known cavity with a diameter of about 25 m is visible. The true geometrical characteristics of the cavity were unknown since there are no boreholes in the area. The focus of this survey was primarily of a qualitative nature and the objective was to determine if ERT and HVSR could be used to identify and map near surface cavities (less than 30 meter in depth) in a limestones kartsic area such as Akrotirion Peninsula. A 2D/3D model of the resistivity distribution is given for the area under investigation. Furthermore, analysis of microtremors data provides a profile of the seismic response of the tectono-karstic voids.

Shortly after World War II, considerable impetus was given to use of truck haulage in open pit mines by the manufacture of large off-highway trucks. Mine management was quick to utilize this more flexible approach to open pit operation and in the ensuing years much time and energy has been spent to improve the basic concept. Dramatic progress has been made in drilling, blasting, loading and hauling with much emphasis placed on equipment improvement. In general, haul roads in open pit mines and quarries have received rather perfunctory treatment in studies of surface mining operations. Their importance to the successful pit operation requires more than a brief sentence saying, "Good haul roads must be maintained." Haulage costs account for approximately one-third of total mining costs including general costs and about 90 percent of the total loading-haulage cycle time is consumed in travel, hence, good haul road planning, construction and maintenance are mandatory for a viable operation.

High-pressure grinding rolls subject the feed material to pressures of 200 N/mm? During this process considerable size reduction and the Formation of flakes occur. This paper describes the basic consideration For design and operating of this type of mill. It is also shown that the particle size distribution resulting from this process is typical for grinding processes but untypical for crushing processes. High pressure grinding rolls are designed in size of up to 2.8 m roll diameter allowing feed material top sizes of 250 mm. The rigid frame, bearing and drive - train design allows a broad application of the high-pressure grinding rolls operating the machine in open or semi-closed and closed circuit for dry and moist feed materials. Operating results show that capacity increases of up to 100 % can be accomplished with this technology. The high-pressure grinding roll also, allows for lower operating and maintenance costs due to energy savings of up to 20 L and reduction of wear to less than 1 76 for dry and less than 0.1 5 for wet grinding. Other advantages of the high-pressure grinding rolls are smaller equipment sizes than a ball or SAG-mill for a given capacity resulting in lower building sizes with reduced capital in- vestment costs.

In this study, FLAC3D modeling was conducted for ground-structure stability assessment for a pilot tunnel passing under a large shaft excavated in the vicinity of existing structures at Karangahape Station for the City Rail Link Project in Auckland, New Zealand. The analysis involved generation of the geometries and construction sequences in Rhinoceros®, modeling the existing ground condition, calibration of the simulated in situ conditions with the observed behavior of the ground, and excavation of the shaft and the pilot tunnel. A comprehensive interpretation of the results was then performed accompanied by comparison of the predicted behavior with the observed response of the ground during construction.

Alaska is in competition with the rest of the world for exploration dollars. Providing a "seed package" of airborne geophysical data for the state's numerous mining districts encourages companies to begin more detailed exploration in more areas than they could have afforded on their own. When data are already available, the initial risk decreases for people involved in exploration. Airborne magnetic and electromagnetic data help ge¬ologists and geophysicists determine what rocks and structures are present under overburden and vegetation. These data form a fundamental package that exploration companies want before intensively exploring most regions. Individual mining companies have conducted their own geophysical surveys during the past several decades. However, these data are not available to other companies. The companies able to afford geophysical surveys have less money for ground exploration after purchasing expensive, private geophysical data. Therefore, they are not able to explore as many places as they might. Additionally, since data are not shared with other exploration companies, the proprietary surveys do not foster intercompany competition to move projects forward. Individual prospectors and small companies can not afford their own geophysical surveys. "It is more often than not the grassroots exploration efforts of the smaller operator that leads to significant discoveries," said Klaus M. INTRODUCTION The National Park Service (NPS) conducted a research program from mid-1975 to early 1978 to measure alpha radiation levels in natural caves which it administers. Subsequently, a long-term management program was developed which has conducted routine monitoring of radiation levels and has computed employee exposure accumulations in certain NPS caves. The overall program: research and management; was undertaken to evaluate the possible health hazard to cave visitors, interpreters, researchers, maintenance personnel, concessions employees and other workers and to protect their health. The results of this work have been reported extensively elsewhere (see References 1 through 3, 5, 6, 9 through 13, and 14 through 26). This paper deals with the relation of radon gas and daughter produced radiation levels to the cave air flows which mobilize them. These flows are a function of interior cave and exterior ambient air temperatures and pressures and of the cave's geophysical configuration. The low-level, ionizing radiation is produced by minute concentrations of radon and thoron gases which emanate from within caves. Because of confinement, the radiation levels are often appreciably higher than in surface atmospheres. Subsequent radioactive disintegration of the gases into their ionized "daughter" products, which are particulates, permits distribution of the alpha radiation throughout a cave system. The extent and character of this distribution depends upon the particular cave and the air flows which it produces. Thus, the alpha radiation serves as a "tracer" to describe the flows. The flow analysis is divided into two parts: 1) A qualitative description with respect to the two basic geophysical cave types over both long-term (annual) and short-term (diurnal to weekly) periods. 2) A quantitative description of the unsteady, uniform and non-uniform, one-dimensional, incompressible motions for both influent and effluent air flow situations in both basic geophysical cave types. A part of the qualitative description presents "Special Measurement" data: Tsivoglou [vs.] Kusnetz working levels, Tsivoglou individual daughter levels and free ion concentrations, radon gas concentrations, and equilibrium ratios. A great deal of important work has been carried out by Mr. Bobby C. Carson, Cave Radiation Technician at Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky. He reports these findings later in this conference (Ref. 6). Some of his results have been used here to establish the cave air flow analysis. Other National Park Service personnel have made measurements at others of the caves for which data are reported here. All of this work and cooperation has been vital to the success of this research program. It is very much appreciated. THEORETICAL FLOW DESCRIPTION Previously reported research (See Ref's. 20, 21, 23 and 25) has established the qualitative relationship between the alpha radiation in caves and their natural air flows. The radiation serves as a representation of these air flows. Changes in radiation with time represent changes in the main forces which produce the air flows. The quantitative data have substantiated that [all caves in which the primary cause of air flow is due to temperature produced gravity (density) gradients and also having minimal man-made disturbances, experience seasonal variations in airborne alpha radiation. The radiation levels increase in summer but decrease in winter], based upon seasonal air movements through each cave system which occur naturally. Two general types of physical cave configurations which control the air flows have been identified as: 1. Those which go up into a hillside or mountainside: Type I ("Upside-down" = USD). 2. Those which go down into the earth; Type II ("Right-side-up" = RSU). These act to control the air flows seasonally. The summer increase in Type I caves is due to increased air flows, whereas in Type II caves it results from stagnation or reduced air flows. This seeming paradox is explained by the physics of the air flow regime in each cave type and has been detailed elsewhere [Ref's. (20), (22) through (25)]. It[ i] true, in general, that air flow decreases airborne radiation in the [immediate vicinity] in which it occurs. Any paradox results from subsequent distribution throughout the case as to [ how] the air moves through a cave [system] with respect to time and space. Exceptions to the cave air flow "rule" are: 1. Caves in which pressure gradients and pressure fluctuations [predominate] in producing the air flows. 2. Caves in which man-made effects and management practices are superimposed on the natural air flow regime. Man-made disturbances which can alter the natural cave air flows are tunnels, elevator shafts, bore holes, sealed and closed portals, etc. If these are not properly sealed, the natural air flows which they change will totally alter the distribution and seasonal variations of the alpha radiation levels. These exceptions may act separately or in combination.

A mineral deposit has been discovered and explored sufficiently to establish the presence of ore in ?commercially marketable quantities," This is the point at which exploration ends and development begins, Of course, when the presence of commercially marketable quantities of ore are thought to be present the deposit had to be evaluated before this decision could be reached. If, on the other hand, it was thought that commercially marketable quantities of ore are not present, either more exploration has to be done or the project must be abandoned. It is this decision with which this paper is concerned, more particularly, the influencing factors behind this decision. The final question to be answered is: what profit can my company reasonably expect to make by developing this property and putting it into production? The answer must be expressed as a figure for final profit per ton, money which can be used to pay dividends or to build up cash reserves. Some acquisition cost has probably been paid and the exploration cost incurred at the time of decision, (abandonment or development). In addition to returning these acquisition and exploration costs, the deposit must pay development, mining, milling, capital expense of new plants and equipment, taxes, and various other related costs.

The molybdenite flotation plant at Magma Copper Company, San Manuel concentrator has been in operation since 1956. In January of 1980 the plant was converted from a hydrogen peroxide - ferrocyanide process to the current sodium cyanide - sodium hydrosulfide process. This paper is an operational review of Magma Copper Company's molybdenite recovery circuit, column cell flotation experience and use of on- stream x-ray flourescence analysis.

In addition to providing copper, gold, coal and other minerals that make society function, the industry must conduct its operations in a safe and environmentally sustainable manner. This includes the equipment used and the engines that power the machines.In the United States, Tier 4 diesel engine standards that were set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are the strictest emissions requirement for off-highway diesel engines. This requirement regulates the amount of particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) that can be emitted from an off-highway diesel engine. In Europe, the Euro V standards are driving technology advancement in the sector.The European Euro V standards are required for new equipment manufactured beginning in January 2019. U.S. Tier 4 standards for heavy-duty off-road engines came into effect with model-year 2014 vehicles and equipment. China 6 standards come into effect in July 2020. India’s Bharat Stage VI standards will take full effect in 2020, and the phase-in of BSVIcompliant clean fuels began in April 2018.Caterpillar, Cummins and MTU are three of the leading manufacturers of engines for the mining sector. Each company is working toward creating efficient engines that can function in the often harsh environments found at openpit and underground mines around the world.
