In terms of resources of amphibole asbestos only South Africa can be considered. There are only two asbestos producing fields, one in the Northern Cape Province producing only crocidolite and one in the Eastern Transvaal producing only amosite. The banded ironstone sequence in which amphibole asbestos occurs is discussed, and the genesis of the fibre is briefly reviewed. The properties and characteristics of amphibole asbestos are discussed and compared to those of chrysotile. Approximately 300,000 tonnes of amosite and crocidolite are produced annually. Crocidolite has a potential for a fivefold increase of production, which could be sustained beyond the year 2000. An estimate of the resources of the various producing fields in South Africa is made. Mining methods are reviewed and evaluation techniques discussed.

The surface of chalcopyrite was studied in situ in aqueous solution by an atomic force microscopy (AFM). The AFM images showed that some absorbate in patches was detected on the mineral surface, after the chalcopyrite sample was soaked in 5x10-4M potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) solution at pH 11 for 10 minutes. These patches increased in size with time elapsing. At the same time, as shown by the obtained AFM force curves, the adhesion between the AFM tip and the substrate increased greatly due to the adsorption. Rinsing with ethanol removed the absorbate from the chalcopyrite surface, as well as the big adhesion observed in KEX solution.

The recovery of manganese from lower-grade resources has been studied for a number of years. Of key importance in prior work was the discovery that higher-valent manganese can be readily leached with sulfurous acid. This eliminates the need for high-temperature reduction roasting that is conventionally used in processing high-grade material. High-temperature roasting is energy intensive, emits a large amount of carbon dioxide and would not be economical for processing lower grade material. While the prior work provides important information for extracting manganese from lower-grade resources, the production of unwanted byproducts and high water and energy usage has limited its commercial use. This paper describes the results from laboratory work that demonstrate solutions to problems that to this point have precluded commercial development. Preliminary mass and energy balances show that a significant opportunity exists in producing manganese with this hydrometallurgical scheme in a low-cost, environmentally friendly manner. The emphasis of the work is on low water use, low overall energy use and economic destruction of unwanted byproducts.

The philosophy used in designing and writing Duval's Sierrita mine design programs is discussed. The Sierrita Incremental Design system (SID) is reviewed with emphasis on Pushback Extraction Design (PED). FED is a method by which predesigned pushbacks are sequenced into an optimized period-by-period design that can be directly utilized in daily operations as well as intermediate and long range planning. The advantage of SID is that it provides a practical, mineable open pit design. PED is not a theoretical design system; it is in operational use.

The Huari-Huari ore body is located in Southern Bolivia, at an elevation of approximately 3,800 meters above sea level. The ore is a complex massive sulfide, slightly marmatitic sphalerite, in a fault fissure filled hypo- thermal vein in Paleozoic shales and quartzite-altered sandstone. The sphalerite has common associations with pyrite and quartz and is frequently intricately intergrown with stannite, chalcopyrite, and pyrrhotite. The sphalerite also contains numerous inclusions of pyrite, marcasite, galena, boulangerite, jamesonite, quartz, arsenopyrite, and cassiterite. A research program was undertaken to develop a flowsheet for the recovery of separate silver, zinc, and tin concentrates by selective flotation. Based on this experimental work and subsequent flowsheet development, engineering and construction of a 500 metric ton per day concentrator was undertaken. This paper describes the process that was developed for the Huari-Huari ore and the unique aspects of the Huari-Huari concentrator.

Mine ventilation surveys were conducted by Technical Support engineers during June 1987 and September 1989 at the Dutch Creek Hine. The mine is located near Redstone, Colorado and is operated by Mid-Continent Resources, Inc. Following completion of the initial survey, several recommended improvements were incorporated into the ventilation system by mine personnel. The second survey permitted documentation of the effects of those changes on the ventilation system performance. This paper describes the processes involved in the implementation of the recommended changes. The substantial improvements in system efficiency and reduced operating costs are also described.

British Columbia is geologically favourable for a rich variety of industrial mineral occurrences. Some have been produced for years, others overlooked until recently. Major production occurs for asbestos, gypsum, limestone, magnesite, silica and sulfur; lesser production for a dozen others. For several of the minerals, potential is much greater than existing production. New production opportunities exist also for diamonds, niobium and REE minerals, fluorspar, kyanite, nepheline syenite, talc, and several others. Alberta, though geologically less diverse, also has many industrial minerals. Limestone, salt and sulfur have the major production; clay and shale, silica, sodium sulfate and a few others lesser production. Opportunities exist for expanded production, and for new production in heavy (Ti -Zr) minerals, formation brines (Ca-Mg-I-Li), and gypsum.

The "Gold" chapter of my adventures did not start with a rush. On May 14, 193 1, Thayer Lindsley wired me asking if I could examine the Pioneer mine in British Columbia right away. I replied, "Yes," but I had never heard of the Pioneer and, although many others were asking about gold during the Depression, none were doing anything about it. A little later another wire asked me to meet Gen. A.D. McRae in Vancouver in a couple of days. This was the start of 20 years of intermittent examinations for Lindsley. I took the train to Seattle and the night boat to Vancouver where I met Gen. McRae and his associate Victor Spencer. McRae had been one of the Canadian leaders during World War I and, for his services, he had been made a Canadian senator, a lifetime job. Col. Spencer was proprietor of a big store in Vancouver, and almost as distinguished. A seaplane was waiting for us in the harbor, to be piloted by Major McLaren, one of the leading Canadian flyers during the war. He flew us up the long fjord of Howe Sound and then on north along the route of the provincial-owned Pacific Great Eastern Railway past jagged snow-clad peaks to the village of Shalalth on Seton Lake. A rental car run by Curley Evans, a noted British Columbia character, was waiting for us in Shalalth and it took us for 50 miles over one of the steepest and crookedest roads I had ever seen. At the end of the road the Pioneer camp was set in a deep canyon in the Coast Range. Dave Sloan, another British Columbia character, was waiting for us and he immediately took me underground, at nine in the evening, to see the Pioneer ore. The ore body was then a small one but it was running over an ounce of gold per ton. The name Dave Sloan became synonymous with Pioneer. McRae and Spencer told me the history of Sloan arid the Pioneer on the way to the mine. The rich surface ore had first been discovered about 1879. The U. S. Bureau of Mines, through a contract research program with Foster-Miller, Inc., has identified guidelines for the selection of the most effective water spray system and water flow rates for use on continuous mining machines. Specifically, these parameters were modified to obtain maximum dust control with regard to quartz dust exposure and more stringent respirable dust standards due to quartz. A novel water spray system, consisting of flat fan spray nozzles, mounted across the top of the mining machine, along with high flow, flat fan and higher pressure hollow cone nozzles mounted under the boom has been identified and tested. The anti-rollback/underboom spray system minimizes dust rollback while increasing dust knockdown by its unique positioning of spray manifolds and orientation of spray nozzles. Respirable dust suppression characteristics of the system acted in three ways: - by wetting the surface of the broken coal material to prevent dust from becoming airborne; - by controlling the airflow pattern at and near the face to minimize dust rollback to the operator Is control location; and - by dust knockdown, i.e., airborne capture, or scrubbing of airborne dust from the air. During underground trials, the anti-rollback/ underboom spray system reduced dust levels at the operator's position and in the immediate return by 55 and 15 pct, respectively, when compared to a conventional spray system. Quartz dust levels at the operator '8 position were essentially eliminated, while quartz dust levels in the immediate return were reduced by 57 pct. Applying the concepts of this technique throughout the mining industry should reduce the health hazard associated with excessive exposure to respirable quartz dust, as well as allow coal mine operators to comply with the associated, more stringent, respirable dust standards.

This paper discusses design and construction aspects of the tunnel, shaft and station for the Weehawken Tunnel and Bergen line Avenue Station. The project consists of a 1,269 m (4,156 ft) long existing railroad tunnel, which will be enlarged and equipped with a two-track light rail system. The project also includes construction of a deep underground station, with a large shaft connecting the surface station to the below ground station for access and ventilation purposes. Vibration and noise from blasting is a critical community issue and blasting adjacent to two 230-kV duct banks located in the tunnel invert required special blasting procedures.

Shifting ground conditions when tunnelling often call for different methods of attacking the tunnel face. In order to overcome problems with local unstable soft ground in a hard rock tunnelling project the Boodex method offers a cost effective alternative. Boodex and variants of it is a combination of two well-known techniques, drilling with Boomer rig using Odex gear. It will give a steel lined hole ready for grouting and the steel pipe has a load bearing capacity that means that a spiling effect is achieved. In this paper the method and some applications will be described with possibilities and limitations.

An adequate knowledge of the overall behavior of a rock mass at a given site is fundamental to the satisfactory design of a rock slope. The be- havior is controlled by a variety of factors, in- cluding rock type, geological structure, stress and ground water conditions. There are essentially three lines of approach that may be used to obtain information on the in-situ rock mass behavior for the purpose of the design of a rock slope: (1) Direct measurements of rock mass properties by means ol laboratory and field tests. (2) Evaluation of rock mass properties from a study of slope failure case histories and sta- tistical information on stable and unstable natural rock slopes. (3) Evaluation of in-situ behavior of rock mass by using a physical or mathematical model technique.

Surface subsidence events induced by underground longwall coal mining operations can cause various disturbances to surface structures ranging from integrity and stability to functionality problems. Highway bridges, as a kind of special road construction that can only tolerate smaller movements and deformations than road pavements, are particularly susceptible to severe influence caused by subsidence-induced ground movements and deformations. However, based on accurate subsidence prediction and correct influence assessments, efficient and effective mitigation and remediation measures can be designed and implemented to ensure the continuous service of bridges, safety of the travelers and smooth mining operations. In this paper, based on the predicted final and dynamic surface movements and deformations, the techniques to assess subsidence influence on the integrity, stability and functionality of bridge structures (e.g., decks, beams, abutments, etc.) are presented. A number of mitigation measures to protect the bridge structures are recommended along with an actual application case.

Past EPA groundwater monitoring programs required that contamination not leave the boundaries of a disposal facility. New regulations under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) require that once hazardous waste constituents are detected beyond the limits of the disposal area, a program to define the rate and extent of contaminant migration must be instituted. Future regulations are likely to include even more stringent groundwater protection criteria. The implications of both the existing and probable future groundwater protection and monitoring requirements in terms of using geologic containment as a means of disposing of hazardous waste are explored in this paper.

The most serious safety problems encountered in U. S. underground coal mines today are related to the roof bolting operation. Also, roof bolting is usually the operation which limits coal production of the section. The purpose of my paper is to review some of the research, developments, and new ideas related to roof bolting. Many of these ideas have originated at. coal mines or with manufacturers. Most of the research on fundamental improvements has been funded by, and is a part of, the excellent and broad plans of the Bureau of Mines.

The prestressed concrete industry in particular, and the precast concrete industry to some extent, are rank newcomers to the concrete construction field compared to the cement, ready-mixed or concrete masonry industries. This young industry reflects its youth and vigor in its enthusiasm, optimism and the belief that it can reach any goal it chooses to set -- and it is setting its sights high. The prestressed and precast concrete industry fully expects to become the major structural and architectural material by the 1980's. Before exploring how the industry expects to reach this goal, a brief look at the origins and the growth of the industry may be useful in an evaluation of the feasibility of this goal. It was always recognized that concrete, strong and efficient for supporting loads which cause compression, was weak and inefficient when used to carry loads which induce tension. Thus the reason for reinforced concrete in which the concrete efficiently carries the compression in a flexural member while low grade steel bars reinforce the concrete in the areas 'of tensile stress. (Fig. 1). The steel being relatively inexpensive, can passively, but quite effectively carry tensile force while the concrete carries compression. The concrete in contact with the reinforcing also protects the steel from corrosion and acts as insulation to provide a superior "built-in" fire resistance. The major disadvantage of reinforced concrete relative to its main competitor, steel, is its weight in relation to its load-carrying capacity. A case study was conducted on a metal mine operating in Kazakhstan, in which problems were associated with use of a complicated and outdated ventilation system and its high expenses. The mine needs to reconsider its existing ventilation system and identify the risks associated with operational losses when using this ventilation system. The aim of this study was to develop an efficient risk analysis method capable of estimating operational risks and financial benefits of the existing mine ventilation system. The developed risk analysismethod considers ventilationmodelling, riskmodelling, and financialmodelling.Ventilation modelling comprises ventilation simulation and ventilation financial simulation. In risk modelling, the number of risk events occurring with the use of existing ventilation system and the operational losses during these events is estimated. Financial modelling considers operational losses and ventilation financial simulation benefits and uses a dynamic cash flow model to estimate how cost variability influences the cash flow. As a result, the improved ventilation system attains an additional NPVa ranging from 3.2 to 8.5 million US$ at the corresponding defined probability of 90%. The results of this study reveal that the developed risk analysis method can efficiently estimate the financial benefits of ventilation modelling and consider risk events and their total operational losses associated with use of the existing ventilation system. This approach provides a range of possible outcomes and helps with deciding whether the ventilation system is appropriate or whether it should be updated to better suit the project financial benefits.

Particle shape characterization is a complex task made more difficult because of the human eye's sophisticated recognition of shapes, giving rise to the assumption that shape analysis is considered a simple problem. Further exacerbating the problem is the question of whether particles have a general shape. Old and new shape measuring techniques are discussed, particularly the new image analysis methods techniques such as Fourier, Haar, Walsh and Delta. Problems with the current image analysis equipment and future research equipment needs are presented.

The El Soldado copper deposit occurs in volcanic rocks of alkaline affinity of Lower Cretaceous age. The orebodies are discordant and show strong structural and lithological control. The mineralizing event was accompanied by hydro- thermal alteration expressed as carbonatization, silicification, and chloritization. Individual orebodies contain bornite-chalcopyrite cores which are surrounded by haloes dominated by chalcopyrite and pyrite respectively. The sulfur isotope composition of copper sulfides strongly suggests the sulfur is of magmatic origin. Fluid inclusion studies show the mineralizing fluid to be a highly saline NaC1-CaC12, brine. No evidence of boiling was found. The deposit is most likely of epigenetic origin. Hydrothermal fluids were produced during crystallization of a sodium rich trachytic magma during the waning stages of an episode of alkaline magmatic activity. Similar copper deposits along the Chilean Coastal Range may also be associated with alkaline host rocks.

Products unveiled following the Miner Act in 2006 have been upgraded and improved.
