In 2006, McNally International Inc., in a joint venture partner-ship with Aecon Constructors, was the successful bidder on two York Region Tunnel Projects: the Bathurst Collector/Langstaff Trunk Sewers and the York Durham Sewer System (YDSS) Interceptor Sewer 19th Avenue, both in the Toronto area. These projects comprised a total of 13 km (8 miles) of 2.74 m (9 ft) finished diameter tunnels and are both part of the YDSS. Both contracts required the use of earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) with a precast concrete segmental liner.

The utilization of high sulfur Illinois coal by utility plants has been decreasing since the enactment of 1990 Clean Coal Air Act Amendment. Illinois coal producers can make their coal saleable by offering the choice of taking the combustion by-products from the utility plants and placing them in the abandoned sections of their mines. To be competitive, however, coal producers need to select an environmentally acceptable transportation-handling-placement system through which the cost-per-ton of by-product disposed can be minimized. In this paper, a few such systems are presented. The favorable operating range of each system is determined in terms of distance and tonnage. A case study is given whereby cost analysis is conducted for an underground coal mine receiving by-products from two Illinois utility plants.

Part of the Imittos Western Peripheral Motorway in Athens is the twin road tunnel in the vicinity of American College, with 20m excavation diameter. In the paper, the environmental and other requirements, the geometry and the geological – geotechnical characteristics of the rock formations in the construction area are given. Information regarding the modeling and analysis methods that are used for the design of the temporary support, the final lining and the wedge and slope stability analysis is described thoroughly. Finally, the results of the analyses are compared with these of measurements and general remarks during the construction of the tunnels.

Introduction More and more women engineers are joining the traditionally male mining industry. Are they successful? Do they encounter special problems? How do men in mining respond? How can the mining industry effectively use its female resources? What contributes to the success of a woman in mining? What can male engineers do to ease the entry of female professionals into the workforce? An STM survey conducted last spring provided some answers to these questions. All BS graduates in mining, mineral engineering, and extractive metallurgy from 1960-1979 were surveyed. Nearly 60% of the female graduates, from 17 universities, completed questionnaires. The women were asked why they chose mining, how they relate to predominantly male co-workers, what job skills they have gained, and what areas of work they most enjoy. They were also asked how problems of a two-career family are solved. Data were gathered on salaries, titles, specialties, and products handled. Respondents, assured of confidentiality, are identified only by title. Many male mining executives were also questioned for their advice to women in mining. Profile of the Survey Participant The "typical" female mining engineer works with coal, is employed by an operating company, feels she works very hard to prove her abilities, does not want to be treated as an anomaly, and someday wants to be an independent consultant. Of the respondents, 44% listed coal as the most familiar product, 12% said copper, and the rest listed products from industrial chemicals to oil. Titles varied widely but women managers are rarely found. However, the majority of the survey population graduated after 1976 and thus lacks substantial experience. Of 102 female graduates, only 25 graduated before 1977. Since then, there has been a steady increase. The American Association of Engineering Societies reported that in 1980 more than 100 degrees were awarded to women in minerals engineering. Education Highly Valued Twenty-two percent of the women surveyed had graduate degrees, 38% planned further education, and 12% listed a PhD as their goal. The majority of graduate degrees are in technical fields. There were only two MBAs. Five women intended to pursue law degrees, and one woman, with a mining engineering degree and an MBA, is a part-time law student. Along with advanced education, the women agree that production experience is needed for career advancement. However, only 28% of the women have worked in production. Many women, especially younger grads, commented that these are the toughest jobs to get. This is a universal complaint, from males as well as females, though women seem to encounter more opposition. Several women mentioned they were small or slight of build and managers tended to shy away from hiring them for production jobs. Two-Career Marriages The most difficult problem for two-career couples is relocation. Whose career takes priority? Fifty percent of the women said transfers or offers would be examined on a case-by-case basis, weighing pros and cons for both parties. The husband's career took priority with 47% of the women; their own careers, with 3%. These statistics conflict with comments from two employee relations managers. Both said most female engineers they've encountered are married to men who follow their wives' careers. Seventy per cent of the married respondents said their husbands were also engineers. Four said their husbands were engineers at the same company. Some male and female engineers met on the job; others joined the company as a "package deal." Both partners being engineers can ease relocation problems, since an area or company offering one spouse a job can often provide a spot for the other. A company may benefit by getting two new hires for the relocation costs of one. Most companies contacted have policies that allow married couples to work at the same division, but discouraged them from working in the same department. With 40% of today's marriages ending in divorce, one risk is that one or both parties may quit. One personnel executive said there were several couples, each spouse in a different discipline, who were work¬ing out very well at his division. However, he recognized the potential for problems if, for instance, one gets promoted and the other doesn't, or salary increases are unequal. The personnel executive said he has actively recruited married couples, and would again, were each person competent.

One of the biggest challenges for the mining industry is, quite literally, how to the keep the equipment rolling. There is a limited amount of companies that manufacture the 4.2-m- (14-ft-) tall, 5,670-kg (12,500-lb-) tires needed for the haul trucks that are approaching the 362 t (400 st) pay-load class, such as Terex?s MT6300-AC and Caterpillar?s 797F. And, while these might be the most impressive tires, they are not the only ones that are in short supply. The shortage of tires has affected just about every kind of machine, and the demand for those tires has been extremely high for more than five years with no end to the shortage in site. American Tire Corp. (www.americantire.us) is one of the companies working to supply tires to the mining industry. It announced that the demand for its 1.6-m (63-in.) tires that have a zero failure history globally is great and that the company signed contracts worth more than $500 million at MinExpo. Disc cutters have determined excavation rates of rock tunneling projects for more than 50 years. First developed in 1956 by James S. Robbins, disc cutters (then 279 mm or 11 in. in diameter) were used to bore limestone of 190 MPa (27,500 psi) unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and were loaded with 7.12 t (15,700 lbs) each. Modern cutters have reached up to 508 mm (20 in.) in diameter and are typically loaded with up to 31.7 t (70,000 lb) to economically bore through the hardest of rock up to plus 400 MPa (60,000 psi) UCS. New developments, such as larger cutter diameters, are geared to increasing the bearing capacity and wear life of the cutting structure. This, in turn, increases cutter life, cutter load and cutter penetration. Disc cutters have also been re-designed on a small scale for use in hard-rock utility installations. Additional variables also affect the three factors, including cutter spacing on the cutterhead, cutterhead diameter and cutter materials.

The Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM) is preparing an Abandoned Mined Lands Reclamation Control Technology Hand- book. (l) GAI Consultants, Inc. , recently prepared Chapter 2 on Mine Subsidence Control which contains a summary of subsidence abatement measures plus two new decision matrices for evaluating the subsidence abatement options that might be considered for a particular problem. These decision matrices are presented for information. Review of the subsidence abatement methods resulted in identification of items where research may impact the current state of technology in mine subsidence control. These research needs are presented to stimulate discussion of their importance in subsidence abatement and to encourage funding agencies, researchers, and practitioners to work on them.

Exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) can cause serious and irreparable negative health effects, including silicosis and lung cancer. Workers in coal mines have the potential of being exposed to RCS found in dust generated by various mining processes. The silica content of respirable dust in one single mine can vary substantially over both time and location. The current monitoring approach for RCS relies on the use of traditional air sampling followed by laboratory analysis. Results generated using this approach are generally not available for several days to several weeks after sampling, and this delay prevents timely and effective intervention if needed. An alternate analytical method is needed to reduce the time required to quantify the RCS exposure of mine workers. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed a new method using commercially available portable infrared spectrometers for measuring RCS at the end of the sampling shift. This paper will describe the application of the new field-based RCS analytical process for coal mines, including the use of the new method with the existing Coal Mine Dust Personal Sampler Unit. In a case study conducted by NIOSH with a coal mine operator in West Virginia, field-based RCS analysis was completed at a mine site to evaluate the new technique. The RCS analysis results obtained by the field-based method in this case study showed sufficiently strong correlation with results obtained by the MSHA standard laboratory analysis method to allow the mine operator to use the field-based method for evaluating process improvements.

The Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (SMART) Tunnel is a world first in the use of tunnel space transmitting both road and water through the same spatial envelope. The unique aspect of the SMART project is that the highway decks are used periodically for the conveyance of water. This aspect of the project has posed its own technical challenges that have been overcome in the design stage of the work allowing the project to be taken forward to construction with confidence in the systems to be Installed in the tunnel.

INTRODUCTION This paper is the outgrowth of work done by the authors to prepare the seismic design criteria for underground structures on the Southern California Rapid Transit District (SCRTD) Metro Rail Project. It is a follow-on to a similar paper presented at the October, 1984, ASCE National Convention (17). For design, the earthquake-induced distortions recommended herein are to be added to the normal static loading conditions for the underground structure. This design approach has been used by 18 section designers on the SCRTD Project. Preliminary results from two- and three-dimensional finite element solutions have partially verified the approach. Areas where additional research is needed for special cases are identified. EFFECTS OF EARTHQUAKE The effects of earthquakes on underground structures may be broadly grouped into two general classes -shaking and faulting. In response to earthquake motion of bedrock (shaking) , the soil transmits energy by waves. Seismologists identify various types of earthquake waves, but underground engineers are generally interested in the effects of transverse shear waves which produce a displacement of the ground transverse to the axis of wave propagation. This paper presents the results from the investigation of the application of thermal fragmentation in Australian hard rock underground narrow-vein mining. Two geologically similar samples from an underground narrow-vein hard rock gold mine were collected to obtain a measure of the technology’s ability to recover ore by the creation of large thermal openings to assess the applicability of the thermal method. Particle size distribution showed a higher generation of fine product, − 2 mm, by thermal fragmentation compared with selective blasting by 31%. The Bond work index for thermal ore (12.62 kWh/t) is half to that of the blasted ore value (25.32 kWh/t). The average grindability obtained for the thermal ore sample was greater than the blasted sample by a factor of 2.44, a higher value indicating a decrease in the energy required to grind. The thermal fragmentation method generates product with higher dissolution of gold in cyanide, by 14% for the − 9.5 + 2 mm size fraction samples. Additionally, the thermal fragmentation results in higher production of − 9.5 + 2 mm material by 15 % compared with selective blasting.

The City of Portland’s Westside CSO Project is constructing a deep tunnel system to reduce combined sewer overflows (CSO) from entering the Willamette River. Several kilometers of microtunneled pipelines connect the existing system to the new tunnel. The alignments encountered a variety of ground conditions, including fill, manmade obstructions (wood, steel piles, debris), fine-grained to dense coarse-grained materials, cobbles and boulders, all below groundwater. As the mining industry moves further into developing countries in search of new resources, its role in international development is coming under increasing scrutiny. This is a trend that is likely to accelerate, along with the potential for headaches among managers in the industry. Public interest in development and environmental issues is rising as faith in “big business” falls. This has strengthened nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) campaigning for sustainable development. And it has put more pressure on banks, governments and development agencies to curb corporate misdemeanors. Developing world governments are also becoming emboldened to reject previously agreed terms they do not consider equitable. The mining industry has begun to formulate a response to these pressures but must go much further. Societal and environmental issues must move from public relations to core strategic thinking. Abiding by rules or codes is not a relevant response. Instead, genuine support for sustainable development is required. This will involve delegating the responsibility for engaging with local communities to on-the-ground staff and developing a dialogue with local stakeholders rather than conducting an initial assessment and disengaging.

The need to optimize surface mining operations has led to the use of discrete event simulation (DES) modeling of truck-shovel systems. Often, these models assume truck cycle times are independent and identically distributed (iid) random variables, although, with significant bunching on the haul routes, this may not be valid. The objective of this paper is to present a methodology to (i) account for truck bunching due to slow trucks; and (ii) test for cycle time dependence (i.e. whether truck cycle time data is iid or not). We built a DES model that accounts for bunching due to a slow truck(s) and used the cycle times as data for further analysis. We then tested for cycle time dependence using Pearson correlation coefficients. The results show significant correlation of truck cycle times for different number slow trucks, with variable speeds. Assuming iid in modeling results in over-estimation of productivity and the uncertainty surrounding it. The over-estimation of uncertainty is pronounced when the relative difference in truck speed increases. The confidence interval of the means of truck loads/shift decreases with increasing number of slow operators. This work extends the usefulness of DES in truck-shovel applications.

The gold content of porphyry copper deposits ranges from less than 0.05 g/t to more than I g/t ((0.0017 to 0.035 oz per st) and the average is about 0.05 g/t (0.0017 oz per st) gold. Perhaps the highest grade mineralization found near a porphyry cop¬per deposit is the Ok Tedi Gold Cap ore body whose grade falls in the 2 to 3 g/t (0.07 to 0.1 oz per st) range. It is difficult to define a gold-rich por¬phyry copper deposit. All porphyry copper ore bodies contain some gold, but there seems to be a fairly sharp break in the gold content at about 0.1 g/t (0.003 oz per st) gold. There is also a problem in identifying dis¬seminated gold deposits that may have an indirect relationship to porphyry copper systems. This relationship is clear cut in deposits such as the Ok Tedi Gold Cap, the El Hueso deposit, the Fortitude and West de¬posits at Battle Mountain, NV, and the Sur¬prise deposit at Ely, NV. There are many other bulk disseminated, epithermal-type gold deposits - McCoy, NV, for example - that might be related to a porphyry system but where this relationship is remains very uncertain. In such places as the Goldfields and Tonapah district in Ne¬vada and in the El Indio, Chile district, there may be a vertically stacked ore deposit rela¬tionship between near surface epithermal deposits and disseminated molybdenite and chalcopyrite enargite mineralization at depth that may represent a deep porphyry system. This, however, has not been positively demonstrated. Most of the bulk epithermal gold deposits are probably not related to porphyry copper systems. Exceptions would probably be Ok Tedi, El Indio, El Hueso, Battle Mountain, and Lepanto where vertical or lateral zoning relationships are more apparent. This author believes that porphyry copper systems are related to a relatively unique type of intrusion that is probably distinct from, for example, the McCoy intrusivebody. For that reason, deposits such as McCoy, Chimney Creek, and the like will not be included in the definition of gold-rich por¬phyry copper deposits for this article. The interpretation of the origin of several of the deposits previously mentioned are subject to an unusual amount of contro¬versy. "Longwall abutment loads are influenced by several factors, including depth of cover, pillar sizes, panel dimensions, geological setting, mining height, proximity to gob, intersection type, and size of the gob. How does proximity to the gob affect pillar loading and entry condition? Does the gob influence depend on whether the abutment load is a forward, side, or rear loading? Do non-typical bleeder entry systems follow the traditional front and side abutment loading and extent concepts? If not, will an improved understanding of the combined abutment extent warrant a change in pillar design or standing support in bleeder entries?This paper details observations made in the non-typical bleeder entries of a moderate depth longwall panel; specifically, it explores data collected from borehole pressure cells and roof extensometers, observations of the conditions of the entries, and numerical modeling of the bleeder entries during longwall extraction. The primary focus was the extent and magnitude of the abutment loading experienced due to the extraction of the longwall panels. Due to the layout of the longwall panels and bleeder entries, the borehole pressure cells (BPCs) and roof extensometers did not show much change due to the advancing of the first longwall. However, they did show a noticeable increase due to the second longwall advancement, a maximum of about 4 MPa of pressure increase and 5 mm of roof deformation. The observations of the conditions showed little to no change from before the first longwall panel extraction began to when the second longwall panel had been advanced more than 915 meters. Localized pillar spalling was observed on the corners of the pillars closest to the longwall gob as was an increase in water in the entries. In addition to the observations and instrumentation, numerical modeling was performed to validate modeling procedures against the monitoring results and evaluate the bleeder design. ITASCA Consulting Group’s FLAC3D numerical modeling software was used to evaluate the bleeder entries. The results of the models indicated only a minor increase in load during the extraction of the longwall panels. These models showed a much greater increase in stress due to the development of the gateroad and bleeder entries—about 80% development and 20% longwall extraction. The FLAC3D model showed very good correlation between modeled and expected gateroad loading during panel extraction. The front and side abutment extent modeled was very similar to observations from this and previous panels."

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Alignment The Strenger Tunnel forms part of the S16 four-lane expressway between Landeckand Bludenz. The construction of this important East-West connection started in 1973with the Arlberg Road Tunnel as its key constituent. Beginning in 1992, solutions for the section between Pians and Flirsch were investigated. Efforts to conserve nature and to avoid potential avalanche and landslide areas led to a solution detouring the villages in the Stanz valley. The starting points were predetermind by the intersections at Pians in the East and at Flirsch in the West. As a result of the expected traffic load and the comparatively high gradient of 2.9%, both one-way, two-lane tubes were constructed at once. The north tube is 5.851 m long, the south tube 5.775 m, see Figure 1. Weathered mine waste consists of oxidized primary minerals and chemically unstable secondary phases that can be sources of readily soluble metals and acid rock drainage. Elevated concentrations of metals such as Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn are observed in deionized water-based leachate solutions derived from complex sedex and Cu-Pb-Zn mine wastes. Leachate (USGS FLT) from the Elizabeth mine, a massive sulfide deposit, has a pH of 3.4 and high concentrations of Al (16700 ug/L), Cu (440 ug/L), and Zn (8620 ug/L). Leachate from the sedex Faro mine has a pH of 3.5 and high concentrations of Al (2040 ug/L), Cu (1930 ug/L), Pb (2080 ug/L), and Zn (52900 ug/L). In contrast, higher-pH leachates produced from tailings of polymetallic vein deposits have order of magnitude lower metal concentrations. These data indicate that highly soluble secondary mineral phases exist at the surface of waste material where the samples were collected. Sulfide minerals from all sites exhibit differential degrees of weathering, from dissolution etched grain rims, to rinds of secondary minerals, to skeletal remnants. These microscale mineral-dissolution textures enhance weathering and metal leachability of waste material. Besides the formation of secondary minerals, sulfide grains from dried tailings samples may be coated by amorphous Fe-Al-Si minerals that also adsorb metals such as Cu, Ni, and Zn.

Rehabilitation challenges were met nearly two months ahead of contract schedule for the Design-Build, Fast Track Scituate Aqueduct & Tunnel project in Cranston, Rhode Island. The aqueduct and tunnel were built in the 1920s and consisted of three sections—a 2.3 m diameter reinforced concrete section that extends approximately305 m before it transitions to a horseshoe-shaped 2.3 m wide by 2.1 m high cast-in-place concrete tunnel that continues for approximately 5.3 km until it transitions back to a 2.3 m circular section that extends approximately 1.9 km to the end of this project. Major repairs were required to assure sustained operation of this water supply tunnel.
