Central Mexico's mining districts, opened centuries ago during the Spanish conquest, still form the backbone of metal mining in the country today. Beginning at Chihuahua City, the Second Mexican Mining Rail Excursion traveled southeast from camp to camp through this major mining area to Taxco. Improved exploration, exploitation, and beneficiation methods have permitted continuous mining of many old deposits, and led to the discovery of new ones. Minerals not sought by early miners-lead, zinc, copper, and fluorite-now contribute substantially to mining activity in central Mexico. Of Mexico's five physiographic provinces, the rail excursion passed through two: the Mesa Central, and the Sierra Madre Occidental. The Mesa Central province is a wide tableland with basin and range topography, containing important base metal deposits. Mining in this region is primarily of limestone replacement ore bodies. Massive deposits form horizontal mantos or vertical chimneys. In northern Zacatecas, the Santa Eulalia and Naica mines demonstrated this character. The Sierra Madre Occidental lies west of Mesa Central in northern states, then widens to almost the entire width of the country from outside Mexico City to the southern border. The area consists of volcanic beds, several kilometers thick. These intermediate volcanics are primarily andesitic, of Tertiary age. Resting on older strata of adjoining physiographic divisions, the volcanic beds are overlain by a thick series of acidic flows and tuffs. Economic mineralization in the Sierra Madre Occidental is vein-type, primarily gold and silver. Mines at Fresnillo, Guanajuato, Pachuca, and Taxco contribute to the claim that this region is the center for precious metals in Mexico. A third type of mineralization, contact metamorphic deposits, is commercial at Santa Eulalia. First Stop, Santa Eulalia Mine tours began with the Santa Eulalia unit, located 25 km east of Chihuahua City. Mining in the region dates back to the early 1700s. The oxidation zone was worked until 1790, but mining declined until Asarco arrived in the early 1900s, building a selective flotation plant for treating primary sulfides. Asarco still owns 34% of Industrial Minera Mexico, S.A. (IMMSA), operator of the Santa Eulalia mine. Santa Eulalia currently has a milling capacity of 850 t/d. The San Antonio and Buena Tierra mines provide feedstock. Head grades at San Antonio, the mine participants toured, average 80-120 g/t of silver, 1.5-4.5% lead, 4-16% zinc, and 0.1-2.5% copper. Tin and vanadium were also recovered between 1930 and 1940. Estimated proven and probable reserves total about 7.6 Mt, although 1.8 Mt of reserves are located in areas of high water pressure and volume, which makes extraction difficult. Water is a significant production problem at the San Antonio mine. In one area, an AX drill hole encountered 2.6 m3/min (700 gal/min) at a pressure of 2.5 kPa. The 16-to-1 milling operation is Sunshine Mining Company's first new silver and gold producing facility. The 16-to-1 underground mine and mill are located approximately 64 km (40 miles) southwest of Tonopah, Nevada. Ore re- serves in the epithermal vein deposit are estimated at 0.91 Mt (one million st) of ore, at an average silver grade of 206 to 240 g/t (6 to 7 oz/st) and an average gold grade of 1.2 g/t (0.035 oz/st). The underground mine uses a large diameter blasthole stoping system of mining using highly mechanized rubber-tired equipment. The mill uses conventional cyanide leaching with countercurrent decantation and Merrill-Crowe precipitation. The mill start-up was in February 1982 resulting in the first pour of dore' in March 1982. The mill's present annual production is approximately 31.1 t (1.0 million oz) of silver and 264 kg (8500 oz) of gold.

"INTRODUCTION The Long Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) Far Site Conventional Facilities are proposed to be sited at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) located within the former Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota. The project involves excavation and support of three large caverns which will house four 10 kT fiducial volume liquid argon (LAr) neutrino detectors and cryogenic equipment, as well as numerous ancillary connecting drifts and chambers. This paper describes the geological setting of the project, the geotechnical investigation undertaken nearly a mile underground and the challenges associated with collection of reliable data in a high stress and geologically complex environment. The layout for the new facility will be presented, along with a description of some of the constraints that will impact construction, including shaft access and working within an operating research facility. THE LBNF PROJECT The global neutrino physics community is coming together to develop a leading-edge, dual-site experiment for neutrino science and proton decay studies, the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). The facility required for this experiment, the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF), will be an internationally designed, coordinated and funded program, comprising the world's highest-intensity neutrino beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Batavia, IL and the infrastructure necessary to support massive deep underground cryogenic detectors 800 miles (1,300 km) downstream at the LBNF Far Site at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), in Lead, South Dakota. The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment is expected to achieve transformative discoveries, making definitive determinations of neutrino properties, the dynamics of the supernovae that produced the heavy elements necessary for life, and the possibility of proton decay. Neutrinos created by the LBNF beamline will travel on the 1,300 km (800 mi) path shown in Figure 1 leading straight through the earth's crust to intercept DUNE's massive, cutting-edge neutrino detector at the Sanford Lab. No tunnel is needed as neutrinos pass easily through soil and rock rarely interacting with the matter. The DUNE far detector will consist of four modules, each of which will be housed in a cryostat containing 17,000 metric tons of liquid argon target material, providing a 10kT fiducial volume. The LBNF Far Site Conventional Facilities project will excavate and fit out a set of four caverns 4850 ft underground in which to place them."

The handleability monitor has been specifically designed to provide a simple, rapid and on-site assessment of the whole or part consignment of a coal blend in its ‘as-received’ condition. Evaluation has been carried out at a number of coal-handling plants, on both metallurgical and power station coals from a variety of sources world-wide. The results which are used to predict which coals could routinely pass through a handling plant at line capacity, without causing blockage or delay, have also been correlated with moisture, ash and size analyses of the coal to develop a predictive model of handleability.

The Macassa Division of Lac Minerals Ltd. is a high grade gold mine that has been operating in Kirkland Lake, Ontario for the past 51 years. It produces approximately 120,000 tonnes of ore per year, averaging approximately 18.7 grams per tonne (0.45 ounces per ton) of gold. Over the years, the ore body has been developed to a point where mining takes place below the 1,220 m (4,000 feet) elevation and 1,830 m elevation (6,000 feet) west of the original shaft. The mine is currently serviced by two surface and two winze shafts. (Figure 1). The ore body extends below the 1,930 m (6,400 feet) Level which is the bottom of the existing mining operation. An ambitious underground exploration program has substantially increased these reserves. Concurrent with the discovery of greater reserves, has been rapidly escalating mining costs, particularly labour which constituted 66% of the total cost in 1981. These costs continued to escalate as the major proportion of mining was carried out to the west, far away from the existing hoisting systems. This required a three lift hoisting system for men, materials and ore. In addition to the increased travel time and ore handling expense, increased humidity, temperature, ventilation and compressed air losses have added to the inefficiency of the operation. As a result, studies were initiated in 1980 to assess the future of the Macassa operation. The results of the studies indicated that a new deep shaft with a potential to hoist from 2,135 m (7,000 feet) or below was the most attractive option. Detailed design of the shaft and associated surface plant commenced in January, 1982 and the following milestone dates were achieved: 1980 - initial study of hoisting and haulage facilities; January, 1981 - ore reserves in excess of 1 million tonnes of ore at 18.7 g/tonne (0.45 oz/ton) confirmed; March, 1982 - preliminary study of Macassa No. 3 Shaft completed; April, 1982 - permanent hoisting plant purchased; June, 1982 - site clearing commenced; September, 1982 - shaft collared; May 1, 1983 - shaft sinking commenced; February 11, 1985 - shaft reached 1,600 m (1mile); December 1, 1985 - shaft scheduled for completion.

Taiwan is located in the orogenic belt of island arcs on the western rim of the Pacific Ocean. The structure of the Taiwan coal fields is much complicated as a result of active Cenozoic orogenic disturbance in Plio-Pleistocene time. The abundant faults and folds have created poor structural conditions of the coal seams and some peculiar safety problems in mining however, the domestic coal still played an important role in the economic development of Taiwan for the years before 1968. Because of increasing mining depth and a decreasing number of miners, the coal production dropped from nearly 5.1 million metric tons in 1968 to 2.45 million metric tons in 1981. There were 173 small active coal mines and about 22 thousand miners in 1981. The coal mining in Taiwan has a history of more than one century. Specific efforts have been undertaken in solving major coal mine safety problems such as gas outbursts, bad roofs and weak floors, difficulty in ventilation due to deep underground mining, spontaneous combustion etc. We have thus acquired much helpful experience which, we deem, is worth reporting at this meaningful meeting.

Overexposure to hazardous noise has been found in most mining sectors, with up to 100% of the surveyed workforce experiencing a noise dose that exceeds the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) permissible exposure level (PEL). As a result, miners show elevated rates of hearing impairment of 70-90% by retirement age. To help manage noise exposures, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed the Determination of Sound Exposures (DOSES) software and implementation guide for use by mine management and safety personnel. This paper describes the development, functions and basic operation of the initial-release version of DOSES. A revised version is being developed to incorporate additional user-suggested functions, and its development and implementation to assess noise control solutions will be described in a future article. The software relies on a time-motion study that profiles the worker’s daily activities. Observations about the worker’s location and tasks or other activities are recorded along with the start and end time, to determine the duration of the tasks so they can later be matched up with the noise data. The software gives the user the option of assessing dose relative to the MSHA PEL, the action level or the NIOSH recommended exposure limit. The software generates a variety of interactive on-screen displays showing where, when and how the worker’s noise dose accumulated. It also can generate customizable printed reports. These outputs can be used to highlight the tasks, locations and times that are associated with the greatest amount of a worker’s noise exposure. DOSES simplifies and streamlines the record keeping and analysis associated with time-motion studies and worker noise exposures, so mine management can make engineering noise control or administrative control decisions to limit the noise overexposure of their workers.

Several laboratory methods are available to determine the thermal conductivity of rocks, but most of them are complex and cumbersome. The present study explains the working principle of Lee’s apparatus, which is relatively simple, easy to fabricate and use, and provides consistent results. In the present study, thermal conductivities of sandstone cores obtained from an Indian coal mine are determined using Lee’s apparatus. An approach is discussed to determine the temperature gradient of sandstone specimens while cooling and is used to calculate thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivities of different sandstone specimens have values between 2.37 and 2.59 Wm−1°C−1. For different sandstone cores obtained from the field, properties including specific gravity, specific heat capacity, thermal diffusivity and porosity, along with thermal conductivity, were determined and highlighted in this study.

The Bureau of Mines developed a detector for controlling sorting devices to separate the copper-bearing fragments from the barren portion of Michigan native copper and western porphyry copper ores. A successful sorter could be used to preconcentrate the ore and eliminate costly hoisting or hauling of waste. An induction balance unit was developed and used in sorting tests on crushed sized -1+1/2-inch (-2.5+1.3-cm) ores from the Kingston (0.9 pct CU) and Centennial (1.6 pct Cu) mines of Upper Michigan. Concentrates of 4.0 pct and 7.5 pct Cu, respectively, were obtained at recoveries of 85 and 80 pct of the copper in the feed. Eighty percent of the sorted ore was rejected as tailing. Sorting larger fragments improved the separation efficiency. Tests on -4+2-inch (-10+5-cm) sized Kingston (1.6 pct Cu) and Centennial (2.1 pct Cu) ore samples yielded concentrates of 4.3 and 4.5 pct Cu, respectively, with corresponding recoveries of 92 and 91 pct. About 60 pct of the sorted ore was discarded as tailing. Porphyry copper sulfide ores also responded to electronic sorting but at a lower separation efficiency. Sorting response was affected by the degree of segregation.

Four years ago, Ashland Chemical Company introduced a new copper solvent extraction reagent for hydrometallurgical utilization. The reagent, an alkylated 8-hydroxyquinoline, is called Kelex 100 ®(1). Since the time of introduction, the reagent has been investigated by several workers for its solvent extraction utility in the separation and purification of transition metals (2-7). In the following text, those factors which are essential to the optimum performance of Kelex 100 on concentrated copper solutions will be discussed. To date, the reagent has been found useful in active concentrations of from 1 to 20% Kelex 100. In order to achieve the best performance for Kelex 100, it has been found that a phase modifier is essential. Various alcohols and phenols have been evaluated in order to improve phase performance and stripping characteristics of the solvent system. Modifiers and diluents are especially important when solvent activities between 3 and 20% Kelex 100 are employed. A 15% Kelex 100 solvent, for example, containing 15% nonyl phenol in Escaid 100 (Exxon) can be utilized to remove greater than 33 grams per liter of copper from an aqueous feed without interstage neutralization, and in the same process scheme the reagent can be stripped to less than 1 gram per liter barren organic producing a pregnant electrolyte containing greater than 40 grams per liter copper and less than 120 grams per liter sulphuric acid. The unusually efficient stripping of Kelex is accomplished by protenation of the extractive molecule during the stripping process.

This work was completed in a 440 KW pilot-scale combustor in preparation for a 50,000 Kg/hr industrial steam boiler limestone injection test program. The main objectives of the work were to: (1) identify the variables which affect sulfur capture, (2) determine the maximum sulfur removal, and (3) determine the effect of limestone addition on furnace operability and heat transfer. The variables which were identified as being important in sulfur capture were: Ca/S molar ratio, flue gas temperature at the limestone injection location, and limestone particle residence time. The maximum sulfur dioxide removal was 72%. The addition of limestone increased the particle deposition rate in the combustor; however, all deposits were easily removed by an air lance.

This paper discusses the challenges to complete the construction of two large underground Metro stations and connecting tunnels in the Tren Urbano system. The completion work includes the installation of specialized mechanical and electrical systems, extensive architectural finishing as well as coordination with systemwide power and controls installed by others. A unique feature of this project was the simultaneous design and construction of the structural/civil/architectural/mechanical/electrical works by KKZ separately from the power and control systems under the management of the Owner, its consultants and other contractors. Completion of this project comes after almost six years of continuous design and construction in a dense urban environment. The project was confronted by many challenges that could only be met with the combined efforts of the Joint Venture team in close cooperation with the Owner and its System wide Contractor. This paper will also address many of the major design and construction changes implemented to suit the Owner’s requirements.

Andalusite is a member of the sillimanite group of minerals consisting of andalusite, kyanite, and sillimanite. These minerals are the structural polymorphs of Al,Si05 (the anhydrous silicate of aluminium) and although chemically similar, they differ in physical properties due to their different crystal structures. For further information on the sillimanite group, see the chapter on Kyanite and Related Minerals that follows. The minerals are generally the products of the metamorphism of alumina-rich sediments and are found in schists, gneisses, or hornfelses, which have undergone either regional or thermal metamorphism from their original form. Sedimentary deposits may also form since the minerals are chemically and physically resistant to breakdown. When heated to a sufficiently high temperature the sillimanite group minerals convert to mullite with a resultant volume expansion and the liberation of silica. Due to the stability of the mullite formed, its high hot strength and resistance to chemical and physical erosion, they are widely used in the manufacture of refractories and special ceramics (Table 1). The reaction can be represented as follows: [ ] The worldwide use of these minerals depends to a large degree on their availability (Fig. 1). Andalusite, with its lower conversion temperature and the lowest volume expansion on being heated is the natural choice as a raw material to produce energy-saving refractories without prior calcination. The Republic of South Africa holds by far the largest minable andalusite deposits of the world, estimated at some 70 Mt of known in situ reserves. The only other large commercial production of andalusite comes from France, with known reserves of about 5 Mt. Potential new deposits are known from China, Ireland, Australia, and South America. World consumption of andalusite in special performance refractories has risen from less than 10 ktpy in 1960 to nearly 300 ktpy in 1990, which is due to cost effectiveness in many industrial applications compared to other conventional refractory products. Andalusite-based refractories have traditionally been used in Europe, South Africa, and the Far East; usage in America was limited in the past due to relatively high delivery costs and availability of other local refractory minerals. However, there is a significant trend towards greater use of andalusite in North America, thus opening new markets and replacing other traditional refractory raw materials. GEOLOGY Andalusite occurs in metamorphosed rocks of clay-like com- position, as in the andalusite-hornfelses in thermal aureoles (contact metamorphism), formed under conditions of high temperatures and low stress, and in regional metamorphic rocks, such as the andalusite-schists. These schists are mostly unconnected with definite igneous intrusions but were presumably also formed at high temperatures and under low stress. Andalusite can also appear in alluvial deposits associated with the primary deposits. At depths of 10 to 20 km, temperatures of up to 450°C might be expected. Another result of increasing depth is an increase of pressure due to the load of the rock cover. The load stresses involved in metamorphism is generally believed to lie in the range 0 to 10 000 bars. During contact metamorphism the increase in temperature is brought about by the injection of magma. The temperature reached in the country rock at some distance from the igneous body will always be less than the initial temperature of the intrusion, which is presumably less than 1 200°C, and will vary with time and distance from the contact. A simple metamorphic reaction involving dehydration of an aluminous sediment can be: [ ] At higher temperatures sillimanite would form at the expense of andalusite, while kyanite would be the mineral formed at higher pressures, as can be seen in the phase diagram of A12Si05 (Fig. 2).

Particle processing is a key to using solid particles in fuel cell applications. Selectivity with regard to reactivity, impurities, etc. is important feature and the treatment of particle surfaces could greatly impact the performance of direct carbon fuel cells. Solid fuel particles will become increasingly important in the future. Present energy conversion systems for solid fuels are too inefficient. New energy conversion systems for solid fuels with higher energy conversion efficiencies are possible. Fuel cell technology is a key-technology in these new conversion systems. The direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC) operates on carbon particles obtained from a variety of solid fuel feedstocks. The DCFC is the only fuel cell designed to directly oxidize carbon particles in a special anode chamber. The particles are generally graphite structure with high purity. The electrolyte used is the high temperature solid oxide, molten carbonate or hydroxide electrolyte. Since a pure stream of CO2 is produced the stream can easily be sequestered and disposed. Pure carbon dioxide produced as a by-product would also have a market in many industries. A well-defined technology roadmap identifying key research and development (R&D) issues is necessary to provide a framework for the development of these systems and to prevent entrenchment in inherently inefficient technologies. This review paper describes the direct carbon fuel cell and its system, how it works, the developmental status, the characteristics of the carbon particles needed, and the research and development issues for the technology. INTRODUCTION The DCFC has been under development for many years. It was researched as early as 18961), but an intense research and development is necessary to realize its potential. William W Jacques, a US electrical engineer and chemist, described a DCFC in 1896 in US Patent 555511 for a “Method of converting potential energy of carbon into electrical energy”. Jacques used coke electrodes in a molten NaOH electrolyte. Molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC), solid oxide (SOFC) or hydroxide electrolyte (AFC) technologies can be used as the basis for the DCFC technology. A schematic of the direct carbon fuel cell in the MCFC mode is shown in Figure 1. The molten carbonate fuel cell operates at approximately 650°C (1200°F). The high operating temperature is needed to achievesufficient conductivity of the carbonate electrolyte, yet allow the use of low-cost metal cell components. A benefit associated with this high temperature is that noble metal catalysts are not required for the cell electrochemical oxidation and reduction processes. "The solubilities of rhodium (Rh) in a molten silver alloy in doré-smelting conditions for treating copper refinery slime at temperatures of 1,000 to 1,300 °C were measured using a high-temperature equilibration-quenching technique and direct phase analysis by electron probe X-ray microanalysis. The results obtained indicate that the solubility of rhodium in molten silver is very limited: only 0.04 to 0.26 weight percent at 1,000 and 1,300 °C, respectively. The thermodynamic properties of rhodium in molten silver were estimated from the solubility data. The compositions of the solid rhodium alloys in equilibrium with molten silver-rich doré metal were also measured in this study. The excess rhodium in the doré alloy will precipitate during the refining as solid, greater than 99 weight percent Rh.IntroductionSilver refining is a core step of the processes of anode slime treatment and precious metals recovery in copper refineries (Hait, Jana and Sanyal, 2009; Ludvigsson and Larsson, 2003). It separates the oxidic materials, such as nickel oxide (NiO) and barium sulfate (BaSO4), from metallics after the de-coppering and de-selenation steps of the anode slime, and refines the silver bullion from the undesired elements present (Cooper, 1990; Hyvärinen, Lindroos and Yllö, 1989). Doré metal is a silver-rich alloy which after the smelting step will be refined electrolytically, and the remaining constituents of gold as well as the platinum group metals (PGM) will be subsequently recovered in their own processing stages.Because of low concentrations of PGMs in copper, they are typically soluble in the doré metal in anode slime treatment. This can be concluded from their binary phase diagram data with silver (Massalski et al., 2007). One exception is sometimes encountered in the anode slime smelting operations if the smelter feedstock is rich in rhodium, as may be the case if the raw materials contain secondary raw materials such as e-scrap. The solubility of rhodium in solid silver is less than 0.04 weight percent (Królas and Sternik, 1995), and its solubility in molten silver is highly uncertain. The only experimental information in the literature (Królas et al., 1993; Elliott, 1985) suggests that the silver-rhodium alloy system at 960 °C forms a eutectic, which locates less than 2 °C below the melting point of pure silver (Arblaster, 2015). Early observations (Rössler, 1900) propose that rhodium is insoluble in molten silver even if solid silver-rhodium solutions have been recently produced on a nanoscale (Kusada et al., 2010).The aim of this study is to measure experimentally the solubility of rhodium in molten silver at doré metal smelting and refining temperatures. The silver alloy used to mimic the doré alloy contained silver and about 1 weight percent of the alloying elements copper, gold, palladium, rhodium and tellurium. The experiments were carried out in metal-slag equilibria with nitrogen-oxygen mixtures as the atmosphere, employing an equilibration-quenching technique and using direct phase composition analysis by electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA) (Jak, Hayes and Lee, 1995)."

A variety of processing technologies exist for recovery from both primary and secondary sources of rhenium. Currently, there are no known primary rhenium deposits; thus, the method in which primary rhenium is produced is dependent on the commodity of which it is a byproduct, e.g., copper, molybdenum, uranium, etc. In addition, focus on the recovery of rhenium from secondary sources, such as alloy scraps and catalysts, is continually growing. This paper presents a review of both primary and secondary processing technologies for the recovery of rhenium.

The Port of New York and New Jersey is one of the most heavily used transportation arteries in the world, handling nearly 40 per-cent of the North Atlantic shipping trade and directly providing nearly 230,000 jobs to the local economy. In 2004, $100 billion worth of consumer goods moved through the port. To accommodate future cargo volumes in the port, which are expected to double over the next decade and possibly quadruple in 40 years, deeper shipping channels are needed to provide access for a new generation of cargo mega-ships with drafts exceeding 13.7-m (45-ft) when loaded. Current channels within the harbor range in depths up to 13.7-m (45-ft), thus preventing carriers from using these larger ships, or requiring significant reductions in cargo to achieve lesser drafts to operate safely within the harbor. As part of the Harbor Deepening Project, the Anchor-age Channel would be deepened to 15.2 m (50 ft) below mean low water (MLW), for a length of 5,790 m (19,000 ft). The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) owns, operates and maintains two existing water siphons in the harbor. Due to their shallow depth, both existing siphons must be relocated before dredging of the Anchorage Channel can be completed. One of the most important considerations in the efficient operation of an under¬ground mine is the haulage system. Often the determining factor between profit or loss is the quick removal of ore and waste from the working places to secondary and main-line haulage areas, and so on to the outside. Important, too, is moving supplies from the surface to the working faces so that the loading process can continue with little interruption. Men must he transported in a rapid but safe manner. It has been through the efficient use and generally the combination of mine cars, track, belt conveyors and rubber-tired haulage equipment that underground operations have been able to compete with the more popular strip or surface mining. As near-surface ore bodies are exhausted, underground haulage will play an expanding part in economically furnishing the world's needs for all types of minerals. The choice of underground haulage equipment, wherever possible, should be one that will give the smallest overall cost of ore removal during the life of the mine while meeting necessary safety requirements. The reader is referred to Sec. 12 for equipment such as scrapers and load-dump-¬haul units that perform loading as well as haulage duties. 14.1-MINE CARS AND TRACK NILES E. GROSVENOR Main-Line and Secondary Haulage-Many mines today use a combination of belt and rail haulage. Even if a- belt system is used to carry the product from the face to the surface, track is used to transport workmen and supplies. A track system, when properly installed, will provide interruption-free and safe haulage. Schrecengost 2 lists the following as major advantages of track haulage: 1. Safety in transporting men in and out of the mine in personnel cars. 2. Easy and rapid transportation of supervisory personnel. 3. A temporary shutdown occasioned by a roof fall or power failure along the haulage system will not shut down the production areas. 4. Quick availability of repair parts and supplies. 5. Large pieces of coal or rock can be handled without damage to the haulage equipment. 6. In areas where quality fluctuates noticeably, different cars may be separated out for special preparation. 7. Rock or equipment may be loaded and moved out of the mine without interference with the production or preparation of the coal. 14.1.1-MINE CARS Mine cars with steel bodies are used in all types of present-day mining. Wooden cars usually are more bulky and less resistant to wear and damage, but are more easily repaired. Regardless of the type of mine car selected, it is most practical to standardize on one type or make to simplify repairs and limit the amount of spare parts necessary to stock. Rigid-body flat-bottomed cars are simpler and usually lower than others of equal capacity. In situ mining is emerging as a potential alternative to conventional surf ace and underground mining techniques. A major factor in determining recoveries by in situ mining is the proportion of ore minerals that can be contacted and solubilized by the leach solutions. To provide basic information on the processes occurring during in situ leaching, particularly at the microscopic scale, the Bureau of Mines has developed a geologic characterization research program. This includes laboratory experiments using leaching apparatus that can accommodate whole core samples. Whole core experiments result in higher leach solution-ore mineral contact ratios than packed column experiments, and also allow for the assessment of permeability changes taking place as the result of mineral dissolution, precipitation, and clay swelling within the flow channels in the rock. A nonreactive, reusable reaction cell has been designed and tested. The leaching apparatus can be used for constant-pressure or constant-flow experiments and allows for the control of flow rate, pressure, and temperature during the experiments, thus permitting studies on a wide variety of ore samples. Details of the experimental apparatus and design are presented, as well as preliminary results from the first series of experiments on an oxide copper ore from the Casa Grande, AZ, area.

Little did I know, in 1977, that when the A. P. Green Refractories Raw Material Manager showed me 5-6 burlap bags with samples of calcined high alumina bauxite in their testing lab that this was the start of China moving to be the number one user and producer of calcined refractory bauxite. According to Ted Dickson in his August 2008 Industrial Minerals article China produced about 4 million tons of calcined bauxite in 2007 using 2 million tons themselves. They imposed an export limitation of 970,000 tons in 2007 and 940,000 tons in 2008. A 10% growth will take up the difference between exports and production in 4 years. Two of these years are gone. It will take only 4 more years to eliminate the export quota in home use. Then they will be importing unless they increase production. Guyana was exporting over a half million tons in 1975 and sold less than 70,000 tons in 2002. Basai Metals Group bought Guyana?s deposits and is rose to 250,000 tons in 2007 and expects to produce 280,000 tons in 2008. PRICES According to the USGS Prices dropped from $172/per ton for Guyana calcines in 1980 just after the start of Chinese production to $122 in 1985. Guyana prices averaged around $120/ton from 1985 to 2005. China?s price dropped as low as $45/ton in 1995 undercutting Guyana and making it virtually impossible for anyone to get into the market. The price suddenly escalated to $550/ton FOB China in the summer of 2008 when China actually cut its exports in half. The price dropped in the fall as orders dropped. This is a four to five fold price increase. Is this a shortage of bauxite or a monopoly? Australia dropped out of the market in 2008 and Surinam, controlled by Alcoa, is not participating right now. Will these two come back in to make up the difference? Will the price hold up so they can make a profit? [ ] The low prices have undoubtedly affected the prices of the 60 and 79% alumina bauxite which can hold down the quantity of 80% plus calcined refractory needed in the world market. China is starting to upgrade lower quality bauxite up to 90% alumina. With high prices kaolin alteration to high alumina comes into play. The calcined bauxite is also used for proponents, Brown fused alumina, and abrasive grades which compete with Refractories. These and the tightness of supplies needed for metallurgical will hold prices up. TONNAGE China is the number one supplier and consumer of high alumina calcined bauxite in the world. Basai Metals Group Guyana (BMGG) is owned and controlled by Basai Minerals Group of China. This appears to be the second largest supplier. Australia has dropped production and Brazil is just starting to expand. It appears China is going to replace some of exports caused by the Export License 940,000 ton maximum in 2008 by raising Guyana?s (BMGG) production of calcined refractory grade bauxite. Companies exceeded restriction in 2007. Fines have been imposed for 2008. In August 2008 they appear on line to meet the 2008 quota. After August prices have dropped off as orders dropped due to the recession. Guyana was the largest producer in 1975 with 769,000 tons which decreased to less than 79,000 tons in 2002. The U. S. is a small part of the world production. I have used the United States charts to represent world imports because I have little data on what other countries import and pay FOB for their bauxite. China started exporting calcined 80% plus refractory bauxite to the United States in 1979 with 24,000 tons. By 1985 they were the number one importer with 169,000 tons. Guyana who had been number one in shipments to the United States gradually decreased to 36,000 tons in 2006. Guyana has been purchased by China BMGG and will increase there production to over 200,000 tons in 2009. Australia shut down production in 2008 and Surinam has elected to not send any Calcined bauxite to the United States.
