The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District’s (MMSD)’s challenges of basement flooding and wet weather sewer overflows are being creatively addressed with the Northwest Side Relief Sewer tunnel. The $132 million, 20-foot diameter, and37,740 feet long conveyance and storage tunnel excavation in dolomite at depths reaching 165 feet below ground surface has been successfully completed within13 months in April 2004. This paper includes Owner’s perspective on the overall project, and the design and construction details by the Designer and the Contractor. The project contract documents included a comprehensive Geotechnical Data Report and the Geotechnical Baseline Report.

"Bi- and multilateral banks as well as export credit agencies in the OECD countries, but also numerous commercial banks, last year committed themselves to compliance with the World Bank’s standards. These environmental and social guidelines, also known as the Safeguard Policies, are the strictest international standards in the area of financing of major investment projects. The Safeguard Policies are procedural and quality guidelines by means of which socially and environmentally relevant impacts can be taken into account in the planning and implementation phase of a project. Objectives of the Bank Safeguard Policies are to ensure that environmental and social issues are evaluated in decision-making, to reduce and manage risk of projects and programs, and to provide a mechanism for consultation and disclosure of information. They are often referred to as the "10+1 Safeguard Policies," since ten of the guidelines address environmentally and socially relevant issues, while one guideline is exclusively concerned with public participation ("Public Disclosure"). In the presentation, the transparency of risk management measures and emergency response plans in pipeline projects will be discussed as an indicator of sustainability. The discussion is to be carried out on the basis of the results of an evaluation of several major pipeline projects, which have been financed at least in part by multilateral banks over the past few years. The controversies surrounding some of these projects due environmentally and socially relevant impairments connected with the investments have also been addressed by the Extractive Industry Report of the World Bank. Pipeline construction was the investment type chosen for the examination to be presented here, since pipelines frequently start in remote, unspoiled regions, and their routes often cross various natural zones and areas with various social structures. The question of safety during construction and operation of the line is always central to these projects; not only for the responsible authorities but also for other societal groups involved, such as environmental associations."

Accident data indicates that mobile haulage poses a significant pinning, crushing, and striking risk. Proximity detection systems (PDSs) have the potential to protect mineworkers from these risks. However, unintended consequences of mobile PDSs can undermine the safety benefit they provide. Soliciting iterative user input can improve the design process. Users help provide a critical understanding of how mobile PDSs may hinder normal operation and endanger mineworkers. Researchers explored users’ perspectives by conducting interviews with mineworkers from seven mines that have installed mobile PDSs on some of their haulage equipment. Mineworkers reported that mobile PDSs affect loading, tramming, section setup, maintenance, and general work on the section. Mineworkers discussed the operational effects and increased burden, exposure, and risk. Mineworkers also suggested that improved task compatibility, training, logistics, and PDS performance might help address some of these identified issues. This paper also gives additional insights into mobile PDS design and implementation.

Gearless mill drives (GMD) are a well established solution for grinding applications in the minerals and mining industries. The paper describes the functionality and technical features of such drive systems as well as the development and the progress of GMD systems over the years. With an increasing installed base and many drives operating for many years, there is an increasing need to modernize or revamp existing GMD installations. The first installations of GMD took place in the cement industry and have demonstrated that ringmotors can achieve a lifetime well above 40 years, if maintained properly. The life cycle time of many other components, especially electronic parts, is usually shorter. It is therefore necessary to replace aged or out-dated components early enough in a planned manner in order to reduce the risk of component failures and the related shutdown times. Modernization upgrades can range from minor software updates to a revamp of the cycloconverter. The paper describes typical examples of such upgrades and shows the most important aspects that need to be considered.

Heap leach technology provides several benefits to combat these issues including low cost, flexibility and diversified process conditions. This paper provides an overview of heap leaching technology with specific emphasis on chemical aspects. Hence, influencing factors, advantages and disadvantages, testing approaches and some fundamentals will be discussed. Finally, heap leach technology for different ore types (copper, nickel, uranium and gold) will be briefly compared.

The worldwide budget for non fuel mineral exploration was expected to increase by 27 percent in 2003 from the 2002 budget, according to the Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The increase comes after five years of declining spending for mineral exploration. For the first time in several years, all regional exploration budget estimates for 2003 as defined by MEG would increase from similar 2002 estimates. However, MEG included 193 more companies in its 2003 survey than in 2002. As with previous MEG survey reports, estimates reflect anticipated expenditures rather than actual dollars spent. Caution, therefore, must be taken when comparing 2002 and2003 estimates or evaluating the magnitude of regional changes from year to year. Sample variations and currency exchange rates may influence year-to-year variations of MEG data. Even so, it is likely that the general climate of improved metal prices in 2003 encouraged companies that had previously left the mineral exploration sector or reduced their exploration activity to once again focus on minerals exploration or increase exploration activity and budgets.

Separation of dolomite from phosphate is the most challenging problem in phosphate mineral processing. Over 50% of the future phosphate reserve in Florida contains too much dolomite to process using the current industry practice. The current phosphoric acid production practice requires less than 1% MgO in the phosphate concentrate as the feed material. The Florida Industrial and Phosphate (FIPR) Institute has collaborated with worldwide experts in the field to address this issue. As a result, the industry is now offered three feasible options. Option 1 offers three methods for reducing MgO content in the concentrate from the Crago process, including adding a dolomite depressant in the rougher flotation step, dolomite flotation of the cleaner concentrate, and scrubbing the cleaner concentrate in quartz sand. These methods could reduce MgO content in the final concentrate by 20–40%. Option 2 involves crushing and grinding of high-dolomite phosphate pebbles followed by dolomite flotation at slightly acidic pH using a new collector that does not require phosphoric acid as a phosphate depressant, achieving a final concentrate analyzing less than 0.9% MgO at about 87% P2O5 recovery. Option 3 is a gravity separation technique using an innovative separation jig, and its full potential remains to be demonstrated.

The expanding applications of vibrating feeders for controlling the flow of bulk materials, and their adaptation for processing requirements, have developed considerable interest in stockpiling and reclaim systems. The general design of these units consists of a material transporting trough, or platform, driven by a vibratory force system. Design flexibility and variety is limited only by engineering ingenuity. The basic motion of the vibratory trough, or work member, is a controlled directional linear vibration that produces a material tossing or hopping action. Material travel speeds vary from 0 to about 30 m/min, depending on the combination of frequency, amplitude, and slope vibration angle.

In order to evaluate the relationships between weathering and durability and strength of rock samples from the Goathill North rock pile at the Molycorp Questa mine, NM, we conducted slake durability and point load tests. Slake durability index (ID2) values ranged from 84 to 98%. Point load strength index (Is50) averaged for all rock units ranged from 1.1 to 5.7 MPa. Results show a slight positive trend between ID2 and paste pH. Two populations of data are distinguishable when ID2 is plotted versus the percentages of chlorite, illite and internal friction angle. In general, Is50 values increase toward the interior of the rock pile. Preliminary conclusions indicate that the durability and strength of the rock pile material generally increase toward the interior of the rock pile. Pre-rock pile alteration and post-rock pile weathering history have affected the durability of the GHN rock pile samples.

Gentlemen; Rainy day in Upper Michigan, a good time to catch up on reading. Am doing that, and have a couple of questions concerning the K and P paper on roof problems and supports. I wonder if the authors can enlighten me. The compressive strength of the coal was reported as 4.4 MPa (633 psi) and compressive stresses measured in the coal seam were reported at around 27.6 and 48.2 MPa (4000 and 7000 psi ). Can such a soft coal actually contain such a high level of stress? Can it be measured as if the material were elastic, or does the coal behave plastically? Can that stress level be confirmed with hydraulic load cells? And if the coal is so soft, and if it is plastic, why is the stress field not hydrostatic? The intact roofrock appears to be unusually strong, with compressive strength reported at around 145 MPa (21,000 psi), and some failures were noted as soon as the rock was exposed. Electromagnetic-based proximity detection systems (PDSs) are utilized on mining machinery to protect workers from being pinned or struck. These systems generate magnetic fields covering the space around a machine, and a miner-wearable component (MWC) detects the field. The PDS determines the distance of miners relative to the machine based on the detected magnetic flux density in the magnetic field. This information is used to establish warning and shutdown zones around the machine. Maintaining a stable magnetic field is essential for system accuracy. However, components used to generate magnetic fields can be influenced by temperature changes. Depending on ventilation conditions and seasonal alternation, a PDS can be subject to significant temperature fluctuation. To better understand and quantify this phenomenon, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed an experimental apparatus to study the influence of temperature on magnetic field generator circuits used in PDSs. Results from the study show that the electric current through a generator can be influenced by both ambient and internal temperatures, modifying the magnetic field that is produced. These findings show that temperature can significantly influence the ability of PDSs, used in underground coal mines, to accurately determine a worker’s position in relation to mining machine.

Introduction Some people say it is almost impossible to get mining permits in California. Some say the day of the lone mining entrepreneur is past. And some say you cannot make money mining gold where old-timers have already mined it, especially in Tertiary gravels. But a young mining operator and SME member, Tim Callaway, is proving these ideas wrong. Callaway's company, Brush Creek Mining and Development Inc., has the necessary permits for its Gardner's Point gold mine in Sierra County, CA. And, Callaway has secured funds for the 7.7 km'/d (10,000 cypd) Tertiary gravel operation. The company's initial goal is to produce 373 to 466 kg/a (12,000 to 15,000 oz per year) of gold at Gardner's Point mine at a cost of less than $6.43/g ($200 per oz). Feasibility studies are currently being conducted to consider product levels up to the 1555 kg/a (50,000 oz per year) involving additional plants and infrastructure. While exploring for other hard-rock properties, the Brush Creek company already operates the Brush Creek lode gold mine. The mine sits high on a ridge south of Goodyear's Bar, which is located on the North Yuba river. It might be noted that the Brush Creek mine has been the subject of media stories recounting how a mine can operate with sensitivity to the environment. Gardner's Point project In 1983, Callaway negotiated with the Gardners Point Ltd. Partnership for control of the Gardner's Point property. The Partnership had been engaged for three years in securing permits, mapping and drilling, and test mining. The Partnership actually mined about 43.5 dam3 (57,000 cu yd) of gravel, which yielded 25.2 kg (810 oz) of free gold. Later, the Brush Creek company acquired ownership of the property. The company then began its own exploration and development program. As underground development proceeded at the Brush Creek mine, plans matured for a high-volume operation at Gardner's Point. Australian and English investors contacted Callaway. A joint venture was negotiated. The Australian owners became majority participants; the Brush Creek company, a minority participant and the operator. The Australian investors agreed to contribute $3.5 million (60%) to the Brush Creek Joint Ventures. The Brush Creek company will contribute its expertise as well as assets and liabilities valued at $2.3 million (40%). About $2 million has been allocated to the Gardner's Point project. Later, Brush Creek Mining and Development Inc. sold 50.4% of the company's common stock to English investors for $5.4 million. Callaway negotiated this private placement, which permits further exploration of projects being investigated. Geography and history The Gardner's Point mine is located in the northern Sierra Nevada of California, about 9.6 km (6 miles) east of the little town of La Porte in Plumas County. The mine lies high on a ridge above Slate Creek, which divides Plumas and Sierra Counties. La Porte is accessible from the Sacramento area by a winding, paved, two-lane highway. But the mine is reached only by two different unpaved county and Forest Service roads. Both roads include steep grades in and out of the Slate Creek canyon. In his time on earth, man has mined about 93.3 kt (3 billion oz) of gold. About one-half of this has been produced in the past 35 years. Roughly one-third of this gold is held as reserve in Central Banks. One-third held is in personal reserves. And one-third is held as jewelry or other fabricated products. The world per capita availability of mined gold is increasing. There are many forces shaping gold's future. Gold currently has a favorable exchange ratio. This is encouraging many new gold mining developments. Production is increasing and new recovery techniques are surfacing. The use of gold in the financial markets is increasing in some unique ways. And gold is again fulfilling its role as a universal money, making its future predictable. Gold Today Man is currently mining gold at the rate of about 1.4 kt/a (44 million oz per year). This adds about 1.5% of newly mined gold to the total supply each year. This production plays a small role in the pricing mechanisms since much of the 93.3 kt (3 billion oz) mined is available to the market in some form. In recent years observational techniques of tunneling have become increasingly popular methods to facilitate complex underground infrastructure projects. The traditional design and construction management practices developed in Europe have been adapted for application in North America to suit a more restrictive management and legal culture. This paper will discuss three recent projects, the San Diego Mission Valley East Extension, Washington Dulles International Airport People Mover, and the Seattle Beacon Hill Station and Tunnels, with the objective of identifying the challenges of applying observational tunneling methods to established contractual practices in North America.

For open pits developed in tropical climates the upper portions of the pit walls are often located in residual soils and weathered rock. Due to the presence of relict structures, and the relatively low strength of the residual soils and weathered rock, design slope angles in these materials have to be developed by blending the results of kinematic assessments of geologic structures with rock mass stability analyses and traditional soil mechanics. Background information on the engineering considerations of residual soils are discussed, and the results of geotechnical assessments for proposed pit design of the Brisas del Cuyuni Project, located in southeastern Venezuela, are presented.

Image processing is a technique that simulates the human vision system. This technique enables applying every statistical or intelligent operation to recognize differences. In this way this new technique is used in quality control systems in most industries. Studying sedimentary rocks is very important from the economic point of view. Some units of sedimentary sequences involve different mineral deposits, hydrocarbon and water resources. Therefore it is important to identify and classify different sedimentary rocks. Descriptive classification of sedimentary rocks is usually based on visual and textural features and chemical composition of a sample. In this paper different samples of a limestone mine in central part of Iran are classified. The samples were collected from different parts of the mine and crushed down in size from 2.58 cm to 3.58 cm. The rock samples were labeled based on percentage of chemical and lithological compositions. Each sample was assigned to one of the distinguished groups. The images of the samples were taken in appropriate environment and processed. A total of 74 features were extracted from the identified rock samples in all images. In order to feature dimensional decrease, principal component analysis method was used. Then Bayesian statistical algorithm was used as a useful tool for classification. Classification Correctness Rate (CCR), calculated for the test data sets are %88, %68, %61 and %72 for the first to fourth class respectively. Therefore it can be inferred that the extracted features of images are appropriate indicators for different samples identification. These precise results besides the advantages of image processing technique, which are increasing speed of operation and decreasing cost, appears to be a desirable success.

Tele-remote operation of production equipment from surface will change the design criteria for underground mines. And for ventilation, with machine operators on surface, conventional planning to dilute and remove pollutants can become redundant. Natural Resources Canada with industrial partners are investigating what will be the new environmental design criteria. Additional complications include new mining equipment being designed without standard services and mines’ desire to eliminate conventional auxiliary ventilation. Findings to date show the cooling of equipment’s hydraulic systems to be the most demanding element, especially in dead-ends and when stationary. Consequently, revised ventilation based heat control strategies for equipment are being developed for the automated mine of the future.

"Industrial wasteland is a typical element of the landscape of all the industrialised regions in Europe. There are many examples from Poland as well as from other European countries that post-industrial sites have been undergone natural colonisation and succession to establish in some cases ecosystems of greater biological diversity than the original ecosystems. The post-industry sites regardless of any reclamation carried out, undergo natural successional processes. The respective biological diversity (number of species, and number of plant assemblages) reflects the micro-variety of the specific habitat. This paper summarizes the results of investigations, which have been carried out since 1989 on coal mine water sedimentation pools in the Upper Silesia Industry Region. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the diversity of spontaneous plant communities recorded on post-industrial waste sites. In the course of the long time fieldwork, plant assemblages representing nine phytosociological groups have been identified."

The industrial coal processing trend toward greater fines production, due to mining techniques and customer requirements for reduced ash and sulphur content in the fine coal product, is the basis for ongoing efforts to improve the performance of the flotation machine. WCO has successfully adapted the principles of the beds Column to a full size machine prototype. Recent plant evaluation tests confirmed the initial promise of this concept by achieving a considerably lower ash product while maintaining the combustible recovery level of conventional flotation machinery. The paper will include a review of the fundamental principles of the beds Column concept, together with a summary of the WEMCO R&D Program from concept evaluation and laboratory testing, through pilot, to full size machine tests. The performance of the WEMCO/Leeds flotation column will be compared to conventional flotation concepts using a flotation "kinetics" approach, which quantifies the floatable and non-floatable specie recovery performance using the Klimpel model as the basis for analysis. The variety of distinct features unique to this concept include a series of barrier rods which are used to advantage, often together with countercurrent reflux water flow, to achieve a significant improvement in product grade. The hydrodynamics associated with the mechanics of "gangue stripping" from the rising "air bubble-floatable specie" matrix will be briefly reviewed.
