A retrospective study was conducted on the Rand Mutual Assurance (RMA) noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) compensation claims from 1998 to 2008 to determine if the 2008 milestone agreed at the 2003 Mine Health and Safety Summit was achieved. The number and costs of NIHL compensation claims in different commodity sectors and workplaces were collated. A secondary analysis of the ages of employees compensated after 2008 was conducted. A complementary retrospective analysis of audiogram data investigated the percentage loss of hearing (PLH) shift in different homogeneously exposed groups and occupations at two gold mines. The compensation claims analysis indicated a significant decrease in NIHL claims from 1998 to 2008, but the milestone was not achieved. The reason may be either that claims have not been submitted timeously as required by Instruction 171 and that the current submissions are a result of pre-2003 noise exposure, or that employees who were baselined are still developing NIHL owing to ineffective hearing conservation programmes in place in the mining industry. On the basis of best practice for hearing conservation, recommendations are made for leading indicators in hearing conservation programmes and for reducing the risks of NIHL in order to achieve the 2013 milestone.

A novel mathematical model is presented which describes the behaviour of beds of particles, of uniform size and shape but different densities, during autogenous separations. The approach used in the formulation of the dispersion model is a phenomenological one based on a statistical view, which leads to a diffusion-like representation of the autogenous-separation process. Although the model currently considers only density-related phenomena, it accounts quantitatively not only for the density-segregation aspects of the process but for the interactions between the particles. Quantitative predictions of the dispersion model are compared with the results obtained in tests using a specially constructed experimental batch jig, and it is shown that the model provides an adequate quantitative description of the process for particles of uniform size and shape. It is pointed out that, for the description of more complicated autogenous separations, a more rigorous formulation of the particle drag and density-segregation terms will have to be incorporated into the dispersion model. Nonetheless it is concluded that the model as presented in this paper provides not only a novel insight into the mechanisms of autogenous separations but a means by which to analyse similar systems.

The peak in Sulphur price late 2008 caused again intensified investigation into the decomposition of sulphates and spend acid. One option is the recycling of sulphur from spend acid, which already started more than 40 years ago in the field of spend acid from organic processes in refineries and acrylic glass manufacturing. Since this acid couldn't be neutralized and discarded due to high organic contents, another source of SO2 to produce sulfuric acid is the decomposition of metal sulfates. The decomposition of metal sulfates was investigated at the next peak in Sulphur price in the 80?s. The first major scale pilot tests and studies of gypsum decomposition were carried out for clients in Florida. The decomposition of gypsum was quite often mainly influenced by the strategic decision of some countries to get own and independent acid production. In other cases the industry doesn?t have enough space to dump the gypsum. Therefore the company was also forced to convert the gypsum into ?saleable? products to avoid these residues. Other projects were made for the recycling of iron-sulfates from the pigment industry. The motivations for these projects were not only given by acid price. For the German pigment industry it was no longer permitted in the 80?s to dump the iron sulphate residues into the sea. These regulations forced the industry to develop new technology, which allows converting of the FeSO4-residues into iron oxide and acid. Therefore economical and mainly environmental factors influenced the decision of the companies to develop and to build these plants. Beside the above mention iron- and calcium-sulphates many other process exist, which produce metal sulphates as an intermediate product. These cases are not forced by environmental or strategic factors. In cases like Ni, Co or Mn-decomposition the main product of the plant is treated in the decomposition plant and later on used as ferrous-alloys. These final products are higher in price compared to e.g. CaO, which exclude the high-energy consumption for the endothermic chemical decomposition reaction. The reaction of SO2 generation based on acid or sulfate decomposition takes place in the range of 1000°C. The energy demand of the endothermic reaction is considerable and leads due to the high fuel-combustion off-gas stream to a diluted SO2 gas. Energy prices are usually increasing at the same time like sulphur. Sulphuric Acid based on decomposition is therefore more expensive than as acid based on sulphur combustion. The paper describes fluid bed technology and possible process concepts for decomposition plants. Additionally the thermodynamic background of the decomposition process and the main influence factors are provided to receive a better understanding of this technology.

Discrete element method (DEM) has been used as a popular simulation method to verify designs by visualising how material will flow through complex equipment geometries. Although DEM simulation is a powerful design tool, finding a DEM model which includes real material properties (e.g., shape, cohesion and friction coefficients) is not computationally feasible. In order to obtain more realistic results, particle energy loss due to rolling friction has been highlighted by many researchers. To implement a reverse torque to account for rolling friction, various models have been proposed. On account of the complexity of the problem, there is no unique model for all applications (i.e. dynamic and pseudo-static regimes). In this paper, an in-house developed DEM software (KMPCDEM ©) was used to assess the robustness of three commonly used models by comparing the repose angle of iron ore pellets obtained through the draw down test in a laboratory setup and then the elastic–plastic spring dashpot model was modified based on considering the individual parameters instead of relative parameters of two contact entities. Results showed that the modified model could produce higher repose angle. The modified model was used to calibrate DEM simulation of repose angle of iron ore pellets in a laboratory setup of the draw down test. Comparison of the calibrated DEM simulation and laboratory results showed 2° differences between the predicted and measured angle of repose. Mineral commodity prices comprise one of the key criteria in the selection of mining stocks. We contend that of the three principal elements of mineral commodity prices, spot price, forward price and long-term price, one has a greater impact on the share valuation processes used by investors. This research paper examines the extent to which each of these elements influences the valuation process. The intention is to provide investors in mining stocks with a greater understanding of how fluctuations of commodity prices over time affect the prices of the mining stocks they hold, or intend to sell or buy. Three mineral commodities, gold, silver, and copper, were used as case studies, since market data on these commodities is readily available in the public domain. Nine market indices covering all three mineral commodities were selected. These are based on clearly defined criteria with the intention of eliminating ambiguity and to test for correlation with the three sets of mineral commodity prices. Nine mining companies, which were not the primary drivers of the relevant indices employed in the study, were used to validate the results obtained from the indices in order to avoid duplication of the same correlation during cross-checking. Each commodity price was adjusted for operating costs. For each market index, an average operating cost was calculated from the companies comprising its basket, while each company?s annual operating costs were used for the stocks of the individual companies examined. The data was collected for the period January 2004 to October 2010. This period was further split up into three sub-periods to account for the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) period that started in mid-2008. We conclude that mining stock prices are correlated with mineral commodity prices, but with spot and forward prices exhibiting stronger correlations than long-term price. This finding should be useful for evaluation purposes. Where cash flow methodologies such as discounted cash flow or earnings per share are used to value ordinary shares and commodity prices are required to estimate future cash flows, the findings suggest that spot prices should be used as opposed to long-term prices. The Kupol mill facility processed a high grade free milling gold/silver ore containing 28.2 g/t Au, 324.8 g/t Ag and approximately 0.5% pyrite during 2008 operation. Gold predominantly occurs a selectrum in the ore and silver is predominantly present in the forms of acanthite, stephanite, pyrargyrite and proustite. Mill start-up was in mid-May 2008 and the mill reached the design throughput of 3 000 tpd in October. The ore was ground to approximately 70%?53 microns. A Knelson Concentrator recovered 9.8% gold and 0.5% silver. The gravity tails reported to a cyanidation circuit that has 14 hours pretreatment and 116 hours leaching. The slurry from cyanidation was then processed by counter current decantation (CCD) thickening to wash and separate the leach residue from the pregnant leach solution. Precious metals are recovered fromthe pregnant solution using the Merrill-Crowe process. The washed CCD leach residue slurry is treated with calcium hypochlorite to destroy cyanide and then sent to the tailings impoundment. Leaching is performed with a new technology called ?CELP? (CANMET Enhanced Leach Process). The Kupol mill overall gold and silver recoveries for 2008 were 95.4% and 85.6% respectively, which were 2.8% and 7.5% higher than targets. Gold and silver extractions in the leach circuit were 94.2% and 84.5% respectively. Leach profiles indicated that gold extraction reached a plateau in the 4th tank while minor silver dissolution occurred in the 5th tank. With the CCD circuit included, total gold and silver extractions increased to 95.4% and 86.6%, respectively. Optimization of the leaching strategy made it possible to reduce sodium cyanide concentration to as low as 410 ppm without compromising precious metals extractions. Silver was effectively leached from the refractory silver minerals because CELP produced more oxidized mineral surface relative to the conventional cyanidation leached mineral surfaces. The average cyanide consumption for 2008 was 1.3 kg/t. The new leaching technology proved to be very robust and performed efficiently even with changes in feed grade and ore mineralogy. Laboratory experiments produced results that were indicative of plant performance. The robustness of the technology and the laboratory test work contributed to the success of the Kupol mill start-up.

Middleburg Ferrochrome (MFC), a company in Samancor Chrome, commissioned a new ferrochrome smelter in March 2009. This is a 60 MW DC-arc furnace with a DC power supply for the smelting of Transvaal chromite ore fines. With the benefit of 12 years' experience with this technology while operating a 44 MW DC-arc furnace, MFC mitigated all known challenges and considered up-scaling risk in the new plant, which had a rapid ramp-up to full power in 02 of 2009. Good operating practices, as made possible by robust equipment selection, including a thyristor rectifier set of proven technology, and operation with optimal slag chemistry, leads to a safe and effective plant operation. With the optimized furnace design and a correctly sized power conditioning system, using only standard (static) harmonic filters and a correctly sized smoothing reactor, the arc furnace is not a 'dirty load' for the utility, staying well within IEC limits for power quality. A patented arc compensation system is installed and allows for full arc position control (to compensate for magnetic field induced arc deflection) so that a symmetrical crucible is maintained, significantly benefiting refractory life. The principal benefits gained from the MFC process is the fact that ore fines are processed, without metallurgical coke, and higher chrome recoveries are achieved compared to other smelting technologies when using a DC open arc for smelting. The CSIR-Ti process employs lithiothermic reduction of titanium tetrachloride feedstock to produce titanium sponge. The product is therefore contaminated by a range of lithium and chloride species. In this study we examine the effects of particle size, temperature, and HCl concentration as input leaching variables on the removal of chlorides from the crude titanium sponge. A review of the aqueous chloride chemistry of Li and Ti provided initial conditions for leaching of impurity species from the sponge. Experimental results confirm that the effectiveness of leaching and removal of dissolved impurities from the sponge are dependent on leaching kinetics, which are influenced by temperature, particle size, and morphology. Of the variables tested, reaction temperature had the strongest influence on the oxygen content of the leached product. The HCl lixiviant concentration had a negligible effect under the conditions tested. Leaching of crude titanium sponge (−10 mm size fraction after crushing) at 14°C in either 1 M or 0.032 M HCl yielded a titanium sponge product that met the ASTM standard specification for commercially pure Grade 1 titanium, i.e., oxygen content < 0.18 mass% and chloride content < 0.15 mass%.

South African underground hard rock mines are typically managed using measurements made daily, weekly or even monthly of key parameters such as face advance, readiness to blast, blast success, temperature or dust levels. Safety and health can be greatly improved if a real-time measurement system can inform decision making. To enable this vision of widespread sensing, communication and decision support, CSIR has developed an open standard architecture for communication of sensor data, and a reference implementation using that standard. The standard is called AziSA, which means ?to inform? in isiZulu. AziSA provides an architecture that allows for connection of any type of sensor and that is particularly suited to wireless sensing. On the safety side, the CSIR is developing a suite of sensors specifically around the risk of rockfalls. Sensors such as an electronic replacement for the barring tool, or a thermal sensor that can detect loose rock, can already be used to identify potential hazards in the hangingwall. When these sensors are combined with location and time information in a single database, it becomes possible to build maps of risk and to extrapolate risk into unmined areas. It is also easy to confirm that routine safety procedures like barring are actually taking place. In the future, it is proposed that entry inspections will be made using remote techniques that will not place an individual miner at risk. While miners will still be required to bar or place support, they will do so with a clear idea of which portions of the hangingwall are safe, and which present risk. On the health side, if a network such as AziSA is deployed in the stope, it becomes much easier to monitor the condition of individual miners. The work strain experienced by miners can be monitored through heart-rate sensors, and their core body temperature can be monitored using various novel techniques discussed in the paper. Additional sensors can be added to quantify worker exposure to hazards such as noise or dust. Individual sensors allow for people who are at an unacceptably high risk of developing heat disorders to be treated timeously, and they also allow for team management based on objective measures. Over a longer period, position sensing and environment monitors, or personal dosimetry, provide a powerful management tool to prevent workers from being overexposed to hazards, and to confirm that management instructions are being followed. Cost-effective sensing in the stope is a major challenge, but one that can be overcome through technology like that used in AziSA. Sensing provides opportunities both to make immediate interventions when workers are exposed to unacceptable risk, and to manage the long-term exposure of workers to hazard.

The production of ferrochrome alloy from chromium bearing chromite ores is conducted at high temperature under highly reducing conditions. However, albeit completely unintended, it is impossible to completely exclude oxygen from all high temperature process steps, with the corresponding possibility arising for the generation of small amounts of Cr(VI) species. Certain Cr(VI) species are regarded as a carcinogenic, with specifically airborne exposure to these Cr(VI) species being associated with cancer of the respiratory system. With approximately three-quarters of the world?s viable chromite ore reserves located in South Africa, and annual ferrochrome production approaching almost half of total annual global output, aspects of Cr(VI) generation and control are of particular relevance and importance to the local industry, and naturally to the global industry at large. This paper seeks to examine theoretical and practical aspects associated with Cr(VI)generation (based largely on experience within the local South African industry, but considered to be generally encountered in the broader global industry context), together with mitigating measures that can be applied within the context of the production processes. From the discussions it is clear that significant improvements in various Cr(VI)-related aspects have been made by the South African ferrochrome industry. However, it is also evident that several areas of uncertainty still exist, which require further research in order to better quantify risks and enhance the efficacy of mitigating steps. One of the most significant elements in solving the co-kriging equations is the matrix solver. In this paper, the singular value decomposition (SVD) as an equation solver is proposed to solve the co-kriging matrices. Given that other equation solvers have various drawbacks, the SVD presents an alternative for solving the co-kriging matrices. The SVD is briefly discussed, and its performance is compared with the banded Gaussian elimination that is most frequently used in co-kriging matrices by means of case studies. In spite of the increase in the memory requirement, the SVD yields better results.

The advancement in Information Technology has resulted in a change in workflow practice in our Mineral Resource Management (MRM) offices on the mines and at our corporate office. This paper discusses the AngloGold approach in defining an IT strategy for MRM, a brief overview of systems usage and benefits. AngloGold has gone through a transformation phase and has positioned itself as a world-class, low cost producer. To support this objective, an initiative has been launched to provide the MRM division with an integrated MRM technical suite of systems with support of a Management Information System. Technical systems for a tabular orebody are not freely available and hence it took AngloGold almost seven years and a significant amount of capital to develop an integrated suite of technical systems. AngloGold MRM IT adopted the typical Zachman framework (value chain) approach in the analysis process and formulated the final deliverable in terms of AngloGold’s strategy. Major benefits have been realized through the ability to change planning scenarios in a short period of time and hence be able to increase reserves and NPV. The development of MRIS, which will become the flagship in AngloGold’s portfolio of systems is in phase two and this system will allow AngloGold to publish Resources and Reserves as per SAMREC and the JORC Code at will. The availability of information at all levels of the operations has made making decisions easier and hence some specialized reports such as the Basic Mining Equation were developed from the Corporate Data warehouse and from the MRM reporting database. Decision Support Systems(DSS) such as Business Objects and Oracle Express are now being used to assist in the process. The decision to use Business Objects to replace SAS reporting as the core reporting tool has resulted in the empowerment of the user and major cost saving as far as the use of consultants to set up standard reports.

Gold extraction from double refractory ores using conventional cyanidation has proved challenging due to the presence of carbon within the ore. Carbon particles may adsorb leached gold resulting in gold losses to tailings, i.e. preg-robbing the gold. Some of the preg-robbed gold may be recovered by the application of the HiTeCC process on CIL tailings. The process developed by Metso Outotec involves caustic conditioning of the tailings followed by high temperature desorption and simultaneous adsorption onto virgin activated carbon of the aurodicyanide. The aim of this paper was to develop a model for the HiTeCC process which could be used to support design and optimisation of the process, based on the adsorption characteristics of the preg-robbing and activated carbons. It was found that accurate experimental isotherms can be used to predict the behaviour of preg-robbing adsorbents. Comparing the sorption isotherms for preg-robbing ores and activated carbon indicated similar dependencies on temperature and ionic composition. Applying boundary layer diffusion models coupled with experimentally determined isotherms for preg-robbing ore and activated carbon, the HiTeCC process was successfully simulated at experimental and plant scale. Gold recovery of the HiTeCC process is most sensitive to the temperature of desorption and gold loading of the activated carbon, with increased temperature improving recovery. The gold loading of the activated carbon in the process should always be maintained lower than that of the normalised pregrobbing carbon gold loading to ensure favourable conditions for adsorption onto the activated carbon. Caustic conditioning stabilises adsorption and is therefore not necessary during the desorption stages of the process, but potentially improves recovery during adsorption. As a result of the rising electrical energy costs in South Africa, a method was sought to reduce the overall electrical consumption of typical shaft systems. A typical shaft configuration was analysed and the primary energy consumers were identified. The ventilation fans for this system were found to consume 15% of the total energy of the shaft system. It was calculated that more than 50% of this energy is consumed by the shaft itself, more specifically, by the pressure losses that occur in the shaft as the ventilation air passes through it. In order to ensure that the theory being used for the evaluation of these shaft systems is accurate, a total of five shafts were instrumented and the actual pressure losses over the shafts plotted against time. These shafts were then analysed from a theoretical perspective. Finally, in order to ensure a thorough understanding of the behaviour of the ventilation air in shaft systems, the systems were simulated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques. There were significant discrepancies between the theoretical analysis and the CFD simulation during the initial comparisons. This discrepancy lessened as the complexity of the CFD models increased, until when the complete shaft was modelled using the full bunton sets, the pipes, and the flanges, the difference between the theoretical evaluation and the CFD simulation was small. This result demonstrates that the theory is insufficient and that the interrelated effect of the buntons and fittings has not been fully appreciated by current theory. The final phase of the work presented here was to evaluate the costeffectiveness of using different bunton shapes and shaft configurations. It is shown that the increase in the pressure losses and therefore the direct operating costs of the shaft can vary by as much as 80%, depending on the bunton configuration chosen. The placement of the piping in the shaft can increase the pressure losses, and therefore the direct operating costs of the shaft, by as much as 12%, depending on the placement of the piping in the shaft; this effect includes the use of flanges. The use of fairings on a large cage can reduce the resistance that the cage offers to the ventilation flow by as much as 30%. This, however, does not translate into a direct saving because as the cage moves through the shaft, the overall effect is transitory. Mixed integer programming (MIP) has been used for optimizing production schedules of mines since the 1960s and is recognized a shaving significant potential for optimizing production scheduling problems for both surface and underground mining. The major problem in long-term production scheduling for underground orebodies generally relate to the large number of variables needed to formulate a MIP model, which makes it too complex to solve. As the number of variables in the model increase, solution times are known to increase at an exponential rate. In many instances the more extensive use of MIP models has been limited due to excessive solution times.

Mining of As-bearing minerals had resulted in the release of arsenic species predominantly As(III), which is known to be more toxic, and undue exposure to it is detrimental to human organ systems. Many materials have been examined for As(III) removal, but it is still challenging to advance sustainable materials for effective removal of As(III). In this paper, a more eco-friendly and superparamagnetic Fe0-Fe3O4 composite was synthesised and evaluated for heterogeneous catalytic oxidation and removal of As(III) with peroxymonosulfate (PMS, KHSO5). The kinetic removal studies showed that removal of As(III) was probably through a chemical process and the Elovich model best represented the experimental data. The removal capacity for As(III) on Fe0-Fe3O4 with PMS (1.76 mmol/g) is superior to that without PMS (0.83 mmol/g). Combined results from XPS and ESR showed that As(III) was fully transformed to As(V) through catalytic oxidation by Fe0-Fe3O4/PMS and afterwards enhanced its removal. The removal mechanism of arsenic was ascribed to the formation of outer-sphere (electrostatic attraction) and inner-sphere complexes. The adsorbent can be separated easily from water due to its excellent magnetisation (64.5 emu/g) and also has good reusability potential as more than 85% of the initial concentration of As(III) was immobilised after five consecutive cycles. Overexposure to noise remains a widespread, serious health hazard in the US mining and other industries despite 25 years of regulation. Most categories of illnesses and injuries associated with mining have improved, with the exception of hearing loss. The drilling of rock in a confined work environment contributes to high levels of noise exposure in mining. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to reduce the noise exposures of jackleg drill operators and to prevent additional cases of noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) by developing and evaluating low-cost retrofit noise controls for equipment. This report describes the procedure for the measurement and reporting of noise from portable pneumatic tools such as jackleg drills. The technique used in this research allows for the determination of the source A-weighted sound power levels and the radiation patterns in octave and 1/3 octave bands. Overall sound power level is also determined. This paper also reports the results obtained by using this procedure to evaluate a SECO S215 standard production drill and a CSIR Miningtek prototype rock drill incorporating engineering noise control measures. It was found that by using the manufacture?s recommended operating pressure of 496 kPa (72 psi) that the CSIR prototype?s sound power was 10 dB(A) less then that of the SECO S215.
