A furnace freeze lining is necessary for safety and economic reasons in several smelting operations. The integrity of the freeze lining is put at risk by furnace power imbalances. Although numerous models have been derived to model the growth and depletion of the freeze lining due to power imbalances, no model exists for thermomechanical damage to the freeze lining. This study provides an initial pathway for modelling thermomechanical damage to the freeze lining in an ilmenite smelting furnace using information from the literature and experimental work. A methodology under the framework of continuum damage mechanics is proposed to model mechanical damage to the freeze lining due to phase changes, thermophysical changes, and constrained thermal expansion. Drill cores of solidified slag ingots were used to represent the freeze lining. The modified power law proved to be the best predictor of the softening response of the drill cores. Damage driving parameters were extracted from the raw data, and governing equations of the parameters with respect to temperature were derived for use in a finite element method (FEM) code.

The successful commissioning of the Cerro Verde project in Peru at the end of 2006 marked the culmination of the efforts of many in the industry over many years to have high pressure grinding roll technology recognized and accepted as a legitimate alternative to the conventional approach to large-scale hard rock comminution circuit design. Other hard-rock projects that have recently adopted HPGR include Freeport (Indonesia), Boddington (Australia) and Amplats Potgietersrus (South Africa). With the increasing acceptance of this technology, the need for technical presentations and articles exhorting the industry to adapt has diminished somewhat, and it is considered appropriate now to shift the emphasis to the provision of information for those considering embracing change. This article endeavours to answer frequently asked questions on the subject of high pressure grinding roll technology, with particular reference to its application in the hard rock minerals processing sector.

For tunnelling in poor and heterogeneous ground a reliable on-site short-term prediction is required to allow a safe and economical construction. With the use of absolute displacement monitoring data and advanced software for evaluation of the data in combination with a routine update of the geological model a considerable increase in the reliability of the short-term prediction could be achieved. The paper deals with theoretical considerations, numerical studies and case histories from alpine tunnels in heterogeneous rock. Tunnelbau in schlechtem und heterogenem Gebirge erfordert auf der Baustelle eine verlaessliche Kurzzeitprognose, um ein sicheres und wirtschaftliches Bauwerk gewaehrleisten zu können. Die Verwendung von absoluten Verschiebungsmessdaten und deren Auswertung mit Hilfe von hoch entwickelten Softwareprogrammen in Kombination mit einer laufenden Aktualisierung des Gebirgsmodells ermöglicht eine erhebliche Erhöhung der Verlässlichkeit von Kurzzeitprognosen. Dieser Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit theoretischen Ansätzen, numerischen Modellen und Fallstudien von Tunnelvortrieben in heterogenem Gebirge. La construction de tunnels dans la montagne hétérogène de faible résistance exige un pronostic fiable à court terme sur le chantier, afin de pouvoir garantir un ouvrage sûr et économique. L'utilisation des données de mesure de décalage absolues et de leur évaluation à l'aide de logiciels sophistiqués en combinaison avec une mise à jour courante du modèle de la montagne permet une augmentation considérable de la fiabilité des pronostics à court terme. Cette contribution présente des approches théoriques, des modèles numériques et de cas pratiques de progressions de tunnels dans des montagnes hétérogènes.

The productivity indices of the Republic of South Africa compare poorly with those of its competitors in the rest of the world. The theory of productivity is relatively simple, and various models are available to demonstrate this. The problem is how to apply the theory in practice and to convert it into a practical management system that will guarantee results. The secret lies in a management approach that aims at a continuous improvement in achievement and that involves the entire work force down to the lowest level in the process. Good management systems ensuring the necessary attention to, among others, management by objectives, finance, personnel, maintenance, planning, and control are a prerequisite for continued improvement and staff involvement. The net result of such an approach is described by the term performance management, which encompasses the total integration of al a company's management systems.

Energy efficiency is a cost-effective way of both bolstering energy security and limiting the harmful effects of energy use on the environment. Mining is an inherently energy-intensive activity, and the 2008 revision of South Africa’s National Energy Efficiency Strategy (NEES) set a target of a 10% reduction in energy consumption by 2015 for the mining sector. In this study, we investigate the effectiveness of the NEES in improving energy efficiency in the South African coal mining sector by surveying energy intensity at a number of operations, and analysing energy efficiency trends and energy use by process and energy carrier at an underground coal mine in Mpumalanga. Most mines surveyed exhibit an increase in energy intensity over time. At the case study mine, the increase was primarily due to increased energy use in the beneficiation and discard reclaiming processes. Trends in energy consumption are a poor reflection of trends in energy intensity, as a decline in energy consumption is most easily achieved by reducing production. A more appropriate metric for energy efficiency at coal mines is energy intensity, defined as energy use per unit of saleable product, relative to a multi-year baseline. The evidence suggests that the NEES has been ineffective in promoting energy efficiency in South African coal mines. We propose that greater success could be achieved by monitoring and reporting on energy intensity at the process level, and by incentivizing energy efficiency gains.

Advanced process and equipment analytics have been around for a while. However, with accessible IT infrastructure and site maturity, it is possible to analyse, monitor, and control processing plants and equipment easily. These various disparate systems provide different reports requiring the involvement of various personnel and attention to different reporting platforms. For efficient harnessing of the systems? capabilities, as well as effective improvement and monitoring of process and equipment, a single point of entry is required. A process and equipment optimization solution was required at a concentrator in South Africa, focussing on the product stream of platinum group metal (PGM) concentrate from the UG2 Reef. The investigation of data to identify strategies for optimization was required to allow visibility into plant operations to guide operators, an easier method to identify process loop problems, identification of imminent equipment failures, and advanced process control to optimize throughput and stability. A collaborative effort between the client and General Electric Intelligent Platforms (GEIP) investigated data-driven solutions to each of the problems. With the focus on process optimization and asset monitoring, as well as equipment monitoring, a combination of approaches was utilized to address the various problem areas that were identified. Each was implemented separately in the control layer of the plant IT infrastructure. The integration was done in a centralized web-based reporting tool that integrated the detailed results from the various solutions. On the process control side, monitoring of control loops was included by calculating performance statistics that were reported daily to identify sub-optimally performing control loops and indicating potential problems. The advanced process control solution for this site includes a surge tank controller, stabilizing flow through the flotation banks, and preventing the surge tank from overflowing or running empty. Equipment monitoring was investigated, for preventative maintenance, by making use of statistical data models to indicate imminent equipment failure. These predicted alarm events included the cause for failure, drilling down, and allowing focus on a specific variable for preventative action. The results included a more stable flow through the mill, with fewer stoppages due to surge tank overflows or running empty. The causes for process drift could be identified and operators could react early. Alarms warning of equipment failure 2½ and 4 months in advance were identified in an offline analysis.

Process control optimisation depends a lot on the availability of timely data from production to give operators a chance to make adjustments before potential process upsets or disruptions happen. A lot of data is already available with newer and updated machine technologies, but what about the process upsets coming from the raw materials that we use? They are natural products and therefore they are not of a stable composition or mineralogy. The production process depends on a certain chemical or mineralogical stability of the raw materials when they come to a roaster, kiln or sintering stage. Only then can the proposed reactions take place and the equipment be operated at stable temperatures. Laboratory analytical technologies have the limitation that they depend on representative samples and have a long time delay. Therefore online (real time) analysers are used nowadays in mining applications to obtain an early indication of the actual mined or to-be-processed ore. Most available technologies can only analyse inorganic content on an oxide or elemental level. Near infrared (NIR)- based online analysers can overcome that limitation and give a real time analysis of organic as well as inorganic composition, if required on a mineral level. The paper will present two case studies where the NIR online technology was successfully adapted.: a) Optimising refractory gold ore processing at the Goldstrike roaster operation b) Optimising the sinter process at a Japanese manufacturer. Deep level hardrock mining faces increasing challenges from elevated in situ stresses and associated rockbursts. This study aims to develop a systematic framework for evaluating destress blasting effectiveness, with a focus on deep Swedish hardrock mines. The methodology integrates a critical review and adaptation of global best practices: advanced numerical modelling (static and dynamic simulations), field-based rock fracture monitoring using ground penetrating radar and borehole imaging, and application of rockburst prediction criteria including the strain energy storage coefficient (F), brittle shear ratio, and burst potential index. Geostatistical simulations, machine learning models, and industrial internet of things-based, real-time monitoring are proposed to enhance predictive accuracy, model calibration, and operational adaptability. Key findings show that effective destress blasting evaluation requires multi-modal integration of numerical outputs, field observations, microseismic trends, and uncertainty quantification, accounting for site-specific geological variability and dynamic stress redistribution. The study advances the field by proposing a predictive, feedback-driven evaluation framework tailored for deep Swedish mining conditions, capable of improving proactive rockburst risk management. It offers both practical tools for mining practitioners to optimise stress management, reduce seismic hazards, and enhance excavation safety, and academic foundations for future refinement of destress blasting models, geotechnical monitoring strategies, and adaptive design protocols. This research contributes to safer, more efficient deep mining operations by bridging gaps between theoretical modelling, empirical monitoring, and real-time, data-driven blast design optimisation strategies.

INTRODUCTION The first references in the literature to the so-called C.S.I.R. 'doorstopper' strain cell were made in 1964 1,2,3,4. These were the climax of nearly two years of experimental and developmental work with the instruments and the operating techniques involved. Since that time numerous field measurements have been made with 'doorstoppers' and they have been developed to a stage where they are in commercial production and are being supplied to users throughout the world. No detailed description of the latest 'doorstopper' equipment has, however, appeared in print and this paper is written to bring the literature up to date in this respect. The triaxial strain cell was developed three years ago 5, 6, 7 and was first described at the First Congress of the International Society for Rock Mechanics in Lisbon in 1966 8. Since that date laboratory tests and-particularly important-field tests 7' 9 have demonstrated the validity and practicality of the instruments and techniques. These instruments have also been developed to a stage where they have been released for commercial production. In this form they are very different from those described two years ago and a full description of them at this stage seems to be justified. THE INFORMATION SUPPLIED BY 'DOORSTOPPER' AND TRIAXIAL STRAIN CELLS Both the 'doorstopper' and triaxial strain cells were designed specifically to determine the absolute stress in rock using an overcoring stress relieving technique. They were not designed to measure changes in stress. They may, however, be used for the latter purpose provided the glue which is used to stick the strain gauges to the rock is known to possess sufficiently stable strain-time characteristics as not to affect the accuracy of the results during the time the measurements are made. The 'doorstopper' was designed primarily to measure the major principal stress in situations where its direction and those of the two other principal stresses were either known or could be assumed. For example, at great depth in undisturbed virgin ground, it is reasonable to assume that the maximum principal stress is vertical and that the other two lie in a horizontal plane. The borehole in which the 'doorstopper' is installed would thus be drilled in the horizontal plane parallel to one of the minor principal stresses, the direction of which would either have to be assumed or determined as described later. The stresses measured would be the vertical major principal stress and the principal stress acting in a horizontal plane normal to the borehole axis. It is possible, as will be shown later, to obtained the complete state of stress using 'doorstoppers'. In this event, it is necessary to make measurements in three boreholes drilled in any three known directions to each other and relative to a system of three orthogonal axes. The triaxial strain cell was designed to determine the complete state of stress in a single borehole drilled in any direction in any stress field. Theoretical flotation models suggest that there is a positive relationship between bubble-particle collision rates and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation. Fine particle flotation performance is generally enhanced by increased collision frequency and hence higher energy dissipation. Contrarily, increased turbulence in the rotor-stator region is related to higher detachment frequency of the coarser size range. Therefore, the optimal modes of recovery for the ?fine? and ?coarse? size classes appear to be diametrically opposed. Industrial applications have previously confirmed that applying greater power to flotation slurries yields significant improvements in fine particle recovery. However, recovery of the coarser size class favours a different flotation environment. An improvement in the flotation kinetics of the fine and coarse size classes, provided there is no adverse metallurgical influence on the intermediate size ranges, is obviously beneficial to the overall recovery response. Managing the local turbulent kinetic energy dissipation, and hence the power imparted to the slurry, offers the benefit of targeting the particle size ranges exhibiting slower kinetics. FLSmidth recently introduced the practical implementation of this concept. In principle, it decouples flotation regimes where fine and coarse particles exhibit preferentially recovery. In the case of naturally aspirated machines (Wemco®), it is referred to as Hybrid Energy Flotation? and incorporates at least three phases: ? Standard flotation machines (standard energy input, rotor speed (r/min), rotor size/type) at the beginning of the row, where flotation is typically froth-phase limited and operational and set-up parameters have a limited influence on the recovery ? Higher-powered flotation machines (high rotor speed, high-power rotor size/type) at the end of the row to improve fine particle recovery ? Lower-powered flotation machines (low rotor speed, low power rotor size/type) to enhance coarse particle recovery. A CFD-based flotation model is used to highlight the effect of turbulent dissipation energy on attachment and detachment rates. Preferential collection zones for ?fine? and ?coarse? particles are predicted for both forced-air and naturally aspirated machines. The greater predominance of UG2 ore types, coupled with the skewed feed distribution of platinum group metals (PGMs) to the finer size fractions, suggests that PGM flotation circuits are not designed for optimal recovery across the size distribution. The application of the hybrid energy concept to PGM flotation offers a possible shift towards a more efficient flotation circuit solution through a managed distribution of energy.

"Zimbabwe is endowed with rich deposits of minerals such as diamonds, platinum, coal, uranium, lithium, gold, antimony, iron, and chrome. Bioleaching has been implemented as an efficient and low-cost method to extract metals such as copper, cobalt, and gold from sulphide and/or ironcontaining ores and mineral concentrates in a number of countries around the globe. Zimbabwe, despite being a world leader in mineral wealth, has gone through years of economic stagnation which have brought with them energy shortages. Bioleaching is an innovative way to recover minerals from ores using relatively low-capital-cost and non-polluting technology. Principally, iron- and sulphur-oxidizing bacteria can be used to oxidize iron and sulphide to ferric iron and sulphuric acid, respectively, and the ferric iron oxidizes the insoluble metal sulphides to soluble metal sulphates that can be readily recovered from solution. Although some minerals such as gold are inert to biological reactions, they can be liberated using bacteria that act on certain types of ores and other minerals that co-occur with these minerals. The geology of the mineralized areas in Zimbabwe, rich in chalcopyrite / pyrite, allows a number of microorganisms to be used for the extraction of minerals by bio-oxidation. This paper reviews the potential of bioleaching in the country. IntroductionZimbabwe has rich deposits of minerals including diamonds, platinum, coal, uranium, lithium, gold, antimony, iron, and chrome. Bioleaching is defined as the use of microorganisms to facilitate the extraction of metals from sulphide or iron-containing ores or concentrates (Rawlings, 2004, 1997). Bioleaching has been shown to be an efficient (Blowes, Ptacek, and Jurjovec, 2003; Nordstrom and Southam, 1997; Schippers, 2004) and low-cost (Schippers et al., 2010) method to extract minerals in many countries around the globe. For example, aerobic Fe(II)- and sulphur-oxidizing bacteria have been shown to be up to two orders of magnitude more efficient in the oxidation of pyrite than the chemical processes (Blowes, Ptacek, and Jurjovec, 2003; Nordstrom and Southam, 1997; Schippers, 2004). Additionally, bioleaching can be used to extract minerals from low-grade ores, sulphidic waste rock dumps, and tailings efficiently (Schippers et al., 2010)."

Due to grade estimation uncertainty, two statistical errors can occur. The Type I error is where material is classified as ore and mined, despite the true value being below the break-even grade. This material is dilution. The Type II error is where the material is estimated to be below the cut-off grade and is classified as waste, although the true grade is actually above the break-even grade. This material is not mined and is lost. The uncertainty was assumed to follow a normal distribution in a previous study. For this study, estimated block values are compared to those determined after mining (the best estimate of the true grade). This actual data from four mines shows that the uncertainty follows a Laplace. There is no single solution regarding adjusting the cut-off grade away from the break-even grade, considering estimation uncertainty, that could be applied to all gold mines. However, adjusting the cut-off grade downwards (up to 22% for one mine) is noted when optimizing the profit considering grade uncertainties. This type of adjustment could open up significant mining areas and extend the life of the mine.

"SynopsisThe combustion and co-combustion behaviour of macadamia nut shell, high-ash coal, and anthracite, along with their blends was studied using thermogravimetry. The reactivities of all samples were analysed in air, oxygen, and CO2 atmospheres and at different heating rates from 10 to 40°C/min. Macadamia shell was found to have a lower ash content, 0.36%, than coal with 27.49% ash. The calorific values were similar, 19.64 MJ/kg and 19.44 MJ/kg respectively. The differential thermogravimetric results indicate that as the heating rates increase the ignition, peak, and burnout temperatures increase significantly, leading to high combustion rates. The interaction between the fuels was evaluated using the weighted average model, and the results indicated that there is more synergetic interaction between 20% macadamia plus 80% coal under oxygen than in air and CO2 atmospheres. The results of the investigation provide the combustion and co-combustion characteristics of various samples and their blends and indicate their combustion compatibilities. IntroductionThe global macadamia nut industry is developing at a very rapid rate. South Africa is currently the world’s third largest producer, with a production of about 35 000 t as of 2012 (Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, 2013), compared to 840 t produced in 1996. The greatest numbers of the macadamia nut farms in South Africa can be found in Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and KwaZulu-Natal provinces, with Mpumalanga as the largest producing area. There are many factors influencing the increased demand for macadamia nuts, the most important factor perhaps being their nutritional value (California Dried Fruit and Nuts, 2011; MPC, 2014) and their suitability as a feedstock for manufacturing cosmetics, bakery products, nut paste, chocolates, sauces, and ice-cream. As a fuel, macadamia shell has a high heating value ‘as-fired’ of about 20.71 MJ/kg (Vhathvarothai et al., 2013), which could in turn be used in drying the nust, and the shell could also be milled and applied as a fertilizer."

Worker participation in equipment development can result in improved user acceptance and product quality. This paper focuses on worker engagement in equipment development processes in the South African minerals sector. Qualitative data was gathered during interviews with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and industry experts. A lack of inclusion in equipment design from workers from all organizational levels in mines was reported. Meanwhile, the historical context and workplace culture of the mining industry (including leadership, trust, training, performance, and remuneration factors) were evident barriers to the implementation of new technology. Worker engagement processes should include securing management commitment, creating multidisciplinary teams, effective facilitation, shared understanding of needs, training and development, and iterative design. Human-centred design approaches and independent platforms for engagement on equipment design requirements are recommended.

"This paper aims to demonstrate how a systemic approach can be applied to the analysis of the causes of accidents in South African mines. The accident analysis framework used was developed previously by the authors from the combination of the Mark III version of the Swiss Cheese model, Incident Cause Analysis Method (ICAM), the Nertney Wheel model, and safety management principles. Data on 91 accidents occurring from 2010 to 2012 at the site of a platinum mine in South Africa were used to populate the newly developed framework. The results obtained show that while routine violations (45% of all accidents analysed) were the most common form of human error, problems in the physical environment of workers were the most common workplace factor (39.6% of all accidents analysed). Furthermore, inadequate leadership was found to be the most common systemic factor responsible for accidents (51.6% of all accidents analysed). Some workplace factors were more commonly associated with particular unsafe acts than others, and some systemic factors were more associated with particular workplace factors than others. The outcome of this study demonstrates that systemic factors, rather than human errors and violations, are the chief causes of accidents in the mining sector. IntroductionThe mining industry is a very important sector of the South African national economy. A major factor threatening the sustainability of this industry is mining accidents, which frequently result in injuries or deaths, destruction of property, and pollution of the environment. In the past, mining accidents have led to the shutdown and threat of shutdown of mines (Ryan, 2008; Mail and Guardian, 2011). The country stands the risk of incurring significant losses if the mining industry continues to experience shutdowns. In 2012, the mining sector accounted for R262.7 billion (equivalent to US$32.83 billion) representing 8.3% of GDP directly, on a nominal basis (Chamber of Mines of South Africa, 2013).Mining safety is a global concern and has attracted significant international attention. This has precipitated various studies into different aspects of mining. Unfortunately, human error has been blamed for the majority of these accidents. A study by the US Bureau of Mines found that human error is the cause of almost 85% of all accidents (Patterson and Shappell, 2008). In Australia, it is the cause of two out of every three occupational accidents (Patterson and Shappell, 2008). Various mining companies maintain that they run efficient systems, and hence the behavioural problems of workers are to blame for most accidents. An understanding of accident causality could be a major step in the quest to reduce accidents. Only with a good understanding of the accident process can effective remedies can be designed."

The comminution at grain size level for the liberation of valuable minerals usually requires the highest size-specific energy. Therefore, the full understanding of the comminution process at this level is essential. Models based on the Discrete Element Method (DEM) could be a helpful tool for this purpose. In those, the mineral microstructure, which has a dominant influence on the fracture behaviour, can be described in great detail. One major concern, however, is the missing representativeness of simulated models. In this study, a method to overcome this limitation is presented. The authors show how a realistic microstructure can be implemented into a particle bed comminution simulation using a two-dimensional Bonded Particle Model (BPM). The improved algorithm based modelling approach is exemplarily compared to an equivalent real experiment. Thereby, the focus is set on the analysis of the interfacial breakage and the capability of the simulation to reproduce the experimental results. The comparison of the results shows that simulations at grain size level allow a more detailed evaluation of the fracturing behaviour. This is of special interest as the aim of comminution in mineral processing is not only the size reduction of coarse particles, but an efficient liberation of the valuable components. Hence, simulations with automatically generated real mineral microstructures will help to further improve the efficiency of ore processing. "Matheron's geoslalislical method for the estimation of ore reserves has been developed to the point at which real-life problem may be handled effectively. The steps involved in the method are:(i) obtalning the variogram,(ii) fitting a model, and(iii) producing block estimates.All three steps may cause difficulty, and would-be users need a deep understanding of the theory if failure is to be avoided.To illustrate these points, specific cause are considered:(i) two almost equidimensional porpbyry deposits, one drilled randomly and the other regularly; and(ii) two iron formation, one drilled extensively and being mined, while the other is still at the stage of early estimation."

"Despite the pre-eminence of the Jwaneng Diamond Mine as the world’s richest diamond mine, the discovery story has long been clouded in mystery. This is the 45-year old untold story of the Jwaneng discovery and contemporaneous Bechuanaland/Botswana political and socioeconomic history. Diamond exploration by De Beers in Bechuanaland began in 1955, with the first true kimberlite discovery near Letlhakane in 1967, before Clifford’s Rule was applied and before the use of indicator mineral chemistry. Surface deflation soil sampling and bioturbation by termites was the foundation for exploration into the Kalahari. The 1962 reconnaissance programme south of Jwaneng had failed to make any discoveries. Improved sampling methods were applied to the Kalaharicovered areas in 1969 and positive results were received by year-end. The Whateley’s Wish percussion drill-hole in December 1972 was confirmed as Jwaneng 2424D/K2 with drill core in early 1973. Jumper drills were required to penetrate the Kalahari sand cover. Diamond resources were demonstrated despite multiple technical problems. IntroductionThe Jwaneng Diamond Mine is, by value, the world’s richest diamond mine. Harry Oppenheimer is quoted as saying that Jwaneng is ‘the most important primary deposit found anywhere in the world since the discovery at Kimberley more than a century ago.’ (Taylor III, 1982) The mine opened in 1982 after some nine years of evaluation and construction since discovery in February 1973. Debswana (2017) states that 2015 production was 7.87 Mt of ore from which 10.408 million carats were recovered at a grade of 132 carats per 100 t (cpht). Although the value is not reported, it was noted that Jwaneng contributes 60–70% of Debswana’s total revenue from all mines, including Orapa, Damtshaa, and Letlhakane (Debswana, 2017)."

INCOME TAX: POST-GRADUATE STUDY COURSE CONCESSION As a result of representations made by the Associated Scientific and Technical Societies of S.A. and the Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns, engineers and scientists will now be allowed to deduct expenses incurred on post-graduate study courses from their taxable income. The conditions of this concession are set out in section 16 of the Income Tax Act, 1969, which reads as follows: 16. (1) The following section is hereby substituted for section 16 of the principal Act: 16. "Notwithstanding the provisions of section 23(a) and (b), there shall be allowed to be deducted from the income of any person who is a dentist or medical practitioner or practises any profession referred to in paragraph (a), so much as the Secretary may allow of any expenditure incurred by such person in the circumstances contemplated in paragraph (c), if the Dental Association of South Africa in the case of a dentist, or the Medical Association of South Africa in the case of a medical practitioner, or the "Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns" or the Associated Scientific and Technical Societies of South Africa in any other case, certifies in such form as the Secretary may prescribe that such person- (a) if he is not a dentist or medical practitioner, is the holder of a degree in engineering or allied technology or natural sciences awarded by a recognized university on completion of a prescribed minimum period of study of not less than four academic years or the equivalent thereof and enabling the holder thereof to practise the profession of an engineer or a profession for which advanced and specialised scientific knowledge is required which relates directly to- (i) the development or exploitation of natural resources; (ii) mining or prospecting for minerals; (iii) the production of pastoral, agricultural or forest produce ; (iv) the breeding or care of farm animals; (v) any industrial process; or (vi) the training of specialists in any branch of science or technology connected with any aforementioned profession; (b) has practised his profession for not less than three years; and (c) has incurred such expenditure during the year of assessment in respect of the attendance by him of any postgraduate study course approved by such body to improve his qualifications for carrying on his profession in the Republic". (2) The amendments effected by subsection (1) shall first take effect in respect of assessments for the year of assessment ending on the twenty-eighth day of February, 1970. From this section it is clear that the concession will only be granted if the application is accompanied by a certificate, which certificate must be either signed by the Chairman of Die Akademie or the President of the Associated Societies. In terms of the authority granted such certificates must certify that: (i) the taxpayer concerned has practised his profession for not less than three years; (ii) the expenditure was incurred by the taxpayer during the year of assessment indicated in the certificate; (iii) the expenditure was incurred by the taxpayer in respect of the attendance by him of a post-graduate study course approved by the Associated Scientific and Technical Societies of South Africa or Die Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns, as the case may be, to improve his qualifications for carrying on his profession in South Africa; (iv) the taxpayer is the holder of a degree in engineering or allied technology or natural sciences, which degree was awarded by a recognized university,
