"The new permissible blasting device, Cardox, utilizes as a blasting agent liquid carbon dioxide which is discharged.as a gas from a steel container or shell. The loaded shell is placed in a borehole, stemmed, and tamped in a manner similar to that employed with explosives, and is fired by electricity.The Bureau of Mines' approval for use of the device in coal mines was granted as Approval No. 1 under date of October 3, 1928; as the result of tests made under the conditions and requirements of Schedule 20. There have been three subsequent extensions whereby minor modifications in the original design were granted.The permissibility of the device is subject to the following conditions; (1) It shall be in all respects similar to the sample submitted for tests; (2) certain thicknesses of disc and. weights of heater ingredient and of carbon dioxide, all of which are set forth in Table 2 under the provisions governing permissibility, must be used: (3) the rear cap must always be in place after the shell has been charged, to prevent accidental firing; and (4) firing must be done by means of a permissible-type blasting unit.The permissibility of Cardox was established by gallery tests similar to those used in testing explosives for permissibility. In these tests the shell was discharged into gallery 1 without causing any ignition of gas and air or of gas, dust, and air mixtures there. The conditions of charging the shell, such as weight of the ingredients of the heater element, the carbon dioxide charge, and thicknesses of the disc, were varied according to the conditions under which it would be likely to be used in blasting. The tests made in gallery 1 are here described in detail, as are also the tests which have been made for determining the propulsive strength of the device and the quantities of poisonous gases given off when a shell is discharged."

The National Mining Association and the Mine Safety and Health Administration requested that the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conduct full-scale evaluations of a recently developed carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) reinforcement technique for upgrading existing mine ventilation seals to withstand an explosion pressure of 50 psi or greater. The evaluation was conducted in the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory’s Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) near Fairchance, PA. The purpose of the evaluation was to determine the blast resistance of the CFRP reinforcement technique, designed to increase the strength of two types of existing 20-psi-rated in situ mine ventilation seals. Two candidate ventilation seals were selected to represent the 20-psi alternative seal designs typical of those used in mines prior to July 2006. Installed within the LLEM were (1) a 4-ft-thick pumpable cementitious foam seal using material with a designed 150- to 200-psi average compressive strength at 28 days and (2) a 24-in-thick, low-density cementitious block seal with a center pilaster and keyed to the floor and ribs. The materials necessary for the CFRP reinforcement technique were then installed on the outby (active) side of each seal, and the seals were subjected to explosion overpressures. Both seals with the CFRP reinforcement retrofit successfully withstood explosion pressures of 60 psi or greater during the full-scale evaluations in the LLEM.

This Bureau of Mines study was conducted to obtain a better understanding of the coal mine bump problem and its effect on underground coal mining in the Eastern United States. To accomplish this, information was collected on the geologic conditions, mining techniques, and engineering parameters at five bump-prone mines. Two geologic conditions have been found to cause the occurrence of bumps in the Eastern United States: (1) relatively thick overburden and (2) extremely rigid strata occurring immediately above and below the mine coalbed. Additionally, the probability of bump occurrence is increased by certain mining practices that concentrate stresses during retreat mining, in areas where geologic conditions are conducive to bumps. Mining plans that permit the development of pillar line points or long roof spans that project over gob areas should be avoided because these features may contribute to the occurrence of bumps.

The survey was prepared in order to provide background for further investigations directed toward the electrodeposition of pure molybdenum metal from either aqueous or nonaqueous mediums. While a thorough effort was made to cover all available references, a critical review was not attempted nor does this survey pretend to be exhaustive in nature.

[In an endeavor to promote greater efficiency in the lime industry, the United States Bureau of Mines is preparing a series of preliminary reports dealing with particular problems of the industry. Through the circulation of these reports, it is hoped that sufficient interest may develop among lime-plant operators to prompt them to discuss with the bureau their our experiences with these problems. By such an interchange of ideas, it is believed that conclusion may be reached which will be of practical benefit to try entire industry. Coaxial cable structures form the subject of substantial theoretical and experimental investigations either directly related, or which can be extrapolated, to the communications needs and environments of U.S. coal mines. Communication systems based on "guided" waves, of which "leaky" coaxial cables are one implementation, are attractive candidates for providing a range of communication functions primarily along haulage ways, and possible also within sections up to the working face. (However, there are still strong reservations as to whether a practical coaxial cable sys tem could provide sufficient communications coverage within a section. ) In this Part, we present the results of some theoretical calculations of the performance of leaky coaxial cable communication systems. We also analyze the applicability of the theoretical and experimental results obtained by other researchers to the needs of U.S. coal mines. In particular, this investigation has been focused on the utility of relatively low cost, conventional, flexible, coaxial cable at frequencies covering the LF through HF bands and extending into the lower part of the VHF band, as opposed to relatively high cost, special semi-rigid, coaxial cable* at frequencies in the VHF and UHF bands. There are three major design alternatives for coaxial cable communication systems considered in this chapter: • Base station feeding a coaxial cable with high surface transfer impedance (holes in outer conductor, e.g., braid construction). • Base station feeding a coaxial cable with repeaters (U.K. experiments). • No base station, direct communication via a coaxial cable with periodic radiative structures.

The Bureau of Mines hydrogenated coals of different rank that had been irradiated with either x-rays or gamma rays. Lignite, high-volatile A and C bituminous, and low-volatile bituminous coals were exposed to l billion roent¬gens of gamma-ray radiation; specimens of high-volatile A and C bituminous coals from other sources received 6 million roentgens of X-ray radiation. Irradiated and unirradiated control specimens of those coals were hydrogenated in autoclave experiments at (6,000-p.s.i. final pressure and 400° C. with retention times of 15, 30, or 60 minutes depending on the coal rank and catalytic treatment. Comparison of results from irradiated specimens with those from the control experiments showed that the radiation had no beneficial effect on the coal. High-volatile C bituminous coal may have been affected by radiation more than the other coals. One billion roentgens appeared to reduce the amount of coal converted to liquids and gases by about 10 pct., and 6 million roentgens reduced it by about 6 pct. then catalyzed with tin. In all other cases, the conversion of irradiated coal was either reduced by as much as 4 pct. or was essentially the sank as that obtained with unirradiated coal. Irradiation during hydrogenation nay be effective for increasing the reactivity of coal and should be investigated; further work with coals irradiated prier to hydrogenation is not recommended.

This publication presents a tabulation of oven-and beehive-coke plants in the United States as well as pertinent statistical data on the number, capacity, kind, and condition of the ovens. Coke is an essential raw material in pig-iron production and the coal-chemical materials produced during the coking process are used to manufacture fertilizers, paints, plastics, synthetic rubber, explosives, detergents, nylon, pharmaceuticals; dyes, and many other products necessary to the high standard of living in this country. In table 1 the oven-coke plants in the United States on December 31, 1959, are listed. This shows the name and address of the company, location of the plant, classification or type of ownership, number and type of ovens, annual coke capacity, and the coal-chemical materials produced. The "furnace" plants I are those owned by iron and steel companies and most of them are integrated with blast furnaces to facilitate transportation of raw materials for steel making. Furnace plants represented 87 percent of the total coking capacity and their average annual capacity was 1. 3 million tons. The "merchant" plants are those associated with chemical companies, gas utilities, as well as those that produce metallurgical, industrial, and residential-heating grades of coke and coal-chemical materials for sale on the open market. These coke plants are smaller than furnace plants and in 1959 their average coke capacity was only 520 thousand tons annually. On December 3l, 1959, there were 54 furnace and 20 merchant oven-coke plants in existence in the United States.

Experimental data for coal hydrogenation are presented to show that when a vehicle oil produced from coal is present, coal is hydrogenated to the same high conversion whether molybdenum catalyst is impregnated on the coal or intimately mixed with the slurry. Differences in product distribution could be related to the severity of operating conditions. No minimum mixing time was established, but 2 hours was sufficient. Longer periods of mixing, to 14.75 hours, had no effect on the results. The hydrogenation conditions were in the pressure range of 8,500 to 10,000 p,s,i. at 400° to 500° C. Most of the experiments were made in duplicate. The results were obtained with molybdenum concentrations of 0.01, 0.1, and 1 percent. Al the mentioned pressure range and a time at temperature of 15 to 60 minutes, coal conversions higher than 98 percent were obtained.

The Nation's steel industry is largely dependent on shipments of manganese from foreign sources for steel production. An adequate substitute for the manganese requirements of our present steel technology would improve our national self-sufficiency and also contribute substantially to the conservation of our manganese resources. As each of these objectives is a major interest of the Bureau of Mines, possible substitutes for manganese in steel were investigated. Titanium was selected as the most promising substitute because the published results of several investigations indicate that titanium would perform the most obvious function of the manganese in steel: The elimination of iron sulfide and its deleterious effects. The investigation involved extending the published data on titanium additions in steel to provide enough information for an accurate evaluation of the practical value of the substitute. Therefore, quantitative data were obtained on the partition of sulfur and carbon between iron and relatively small titanium additions.

This Bureau of Mines report describes how the reinforcement mechanisms of untensioned, full-column resin bolts were determined during one underground study. Both axial and transverse shear loadings were identified for two instrumented resin bolts that replaced standard resin bolts in an opera-ting room-and-pillar mining section. The strain responses of resin bolt steel cores to local axial and transverse shear loadings are described. This information was obtained from laboratory testing of resin bolts installations; it was also used to analyze the data from the underground test.

Develop a method for control of groundwater inflow to chronically "wet" sections of underground coal mines, in order to reduce groundwater interference with mining activity and to minimize acid mine drainage. Approach In eastern coal regions, groundwater stored in fracture zones in the rock mass can create a significant water problem for underground mining operations. Fracture stored inflow to mine workings impedes mine productivity since storage water sources usually release at the active face, creating the poor mining conditions typical of a "wet" section. Fracture water can also contribute to AMD problems when the water subsequently contacts sulfide minerals in the coal, The Bureau of Mines has developed a mine-dewatering method that eliminates many of the problems associated with mine water inflow by draining these fracture zones before the water can reach the developing face and interfere with mining activity. How it Works The dewatering method removes large volumes of the stored groundwater through high-capacity pumping from a minimal number of wells placed strategically on fracture traces (the surface expressions of fractured rock zones). These fracture traces are located through low-level aerial photographic and geologic investigation. As shown on the map, dewatering wells are sited precisely on fracture trace intersections in order to take advantage of the increased pumping capacity gained from these zones of high permeability. Accelerometers of various types, velocity gages, and a displacement meter are shown to give reliable date when measuring seismic pulses generated in rock by the detonation of explosive charges. Displacement and velocity records are differentiated and shown to compare with velocity and acceleration records. Velocity and acceleration records are integrated and shown to compare with displacement and velocity records, respectively. The experimental data are shown to satisfy the scaling laws developed by dimensional analysis. Propagation laws are developed for peak amplitudes of the first pulse of displacement, velocity, and acceleration. These propagation laws are shown to be independent of the gage used to obtain the data. As a result, the usefulness of the various gage types can be extended. For example, accelerometers, because of their high frequency and amplitude limits, can be employed near the shot to measure acceleration and/or velocity (by integration), Velocity gages, because of their higher sensitivity, can be employed at relatively larger distances from the shot to measure velocity and displacement or acceleration (by integration or differentiation).

Improve face ventilation in mines with large cross-sectional entries. Approach Oil shale, salt, and limestone mines typically have large entries. Providing adequate airflow to the working faces of such mines for worker comfort, health, and safety is a substantial ventilation problem. If diesel equipment is used at the face or if a methane hazard exists in the mine, the problem becomes even more complex. To address this problem, a study was conducted under a joint contract between the Oil Shale Committee of the Colorado Mining Association and the Bureau of Mines. The study evaluated two face-ventilation concepts for large-entry mines. Improving Ventilation Two face-ventilation systems were selected for testing of an oil-shale mine, based on results of a cost/benefit analysis. The systems were a free-standing jet fan and a ducted fan operating in the blowing mode. The jet fan was spotted on the intake side in the mouth of the entry being advanced with final positioning, in or out, deter-mined by minimum recirculation. The ducted fan was also positioned in the mouth of the entry being advanced, with its tubing terminating 75 feet from the working face. The mine face entry was a dead heading 55 feet wide, 30 feet high, and 320 feet long. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF.) tracer gas was used to measure the performance of the two systems in diluting mine face pollutants including after-gases from blasting, hot diesel emissions, methane roof layers, and methane emitted from muckpiles.

Under its program of advancing minerals technology, the Federal Bureau of Mines has invented a laboratory apparatus for continuous separation of minerals based on differences in dielectric properties. The separator consists of a rotating drum electrode and a wire screen electrode positioned 3 mm apart. A high voltage applied across the electrodes that are immersed in a dielectric fluid produces a high-gradient electric field. The high-dielectric-constant (K) minerals are attracted to and conveyed through the separator by the rotating drum electrode, while the low K minerals settle through the screen electrode. Several design and operating parameters, such as electrode configurations, the dielectric liquid and its dielectric constant, electrical voltage and frequencies, feed rates, and particle sizes were studied. In addition, 28 different mineral mixtures were tested with the dielectric separator. In typical tests, a sample of rutile and quartz gangue containing 10-percent rutile was concentrated to 62-percent rutile with 94-percent rutile recovery. A second-stage dielectric separation of the rutile concentrate produced a 92-percent-rutile concentrate. The overall rutile recovery for the two-stage dielectric separation was 86 percent.

In 1972, the Bureau of Mines developed a direct-method test for measuring the gas content of virgin coal core samples for coal mine health and safety considerations. Since that time, approximately 1,500 coal samples from more than 250 coalbeds in 17 States have been collected for gas content determination. The gas content data, when combined with geologic and engineering studies, can be used as a basis for a preliminary estimate of mine ventilation requirements, and to determine if methane drainage in advance of mining should be considered. The data are also critical in delineating coalbed methane resources and in utilization feasibility studies. This report makes the Bureau's extensive data base of gas content data more readily available to the coal and gas industries. The data are presented in tabular form, alphabetically by coalbed name and by State. The components of the total gas content (lost, desorbed, and residual gas) are given, Location (State and county), sample depth, coalbed or formation name, and coal rank are included for geographic and geologic identification.

This report describes the construction and use of a direct-reading azimuth protractor (DRAP) by the Bureau of Mines for measuring fracture orientations in mines, tunnels, or other excavations having a magnetic environment. The DRAP allows a rapid and simultaneous measurement of dip and azimuth of dip of a fracture plane. The instrument is rugged, lightweight, and easily constructible from standard hardware items. The DRAP can measure dip to within ±0.5° and azimuth of dip to within ±5° of corresponding values obtained with a Brunton compass.

"There was a time when any suggestion that the Davy flame (safety) lamp be discarded, would have evoked unlimited, criticism. However, that time is past.Investigations both here and abroad have shown conclusively that the Davy lamp does not have the necessary factor of safety against ignitions of mine gas, and England, the lost stronghold of the Davy lamp in Europe, has eliminated this lamp and substituted safer types.In the United States there are companies who still use the Davy lamp in spite of all that has been said and published as to the dangers connected with its use.Recently the purchasing agent of an anthracite coal company requested the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, to pass upon the safety of some braise gauzes for use in a shielded Davy lamp. A shielded Davy lamp is an ordinary Davy safety lamp equipped with a circular brass shield that is attached to the lamp posts. This shield extends about one-half way around the gauze and one-half of the gauze height. The main purpose of the shield is to prevent the lamps being extinguished by a sudden increase in the velocity of the air current past the lamp.The brass gauzes submitted for this test represented two grades of brass - a yellow brass and a red brass. The analysis of these brasses was not determined. Two shielded Davy lamps that were submitted for the tests each had a steel gauze. These steel gauzes were also tested. Tests were made in horizontally moving mixtures of Pittsburgh natural gas and air at velocities of 400 to 1,000 feet per minute. The gas percentages used were 7%, 8.6%, and 11%. Tests were made with the lamp shield in two positions relative to the lamp and direction of flow of the gas-and-air mixture. In one position the shield was between the gauze and flow, as normally used. In the other position the shield was on the downstream side of the lamp. The tests were continued until one or more failures or gas explosions been obtained with each of the six gauzes. The results of these tests summarized as follows:"

An equilibrium study of the system potassium carbonate, potassium bicarbonate, carbon dioxide, and water has been conducted with solutions of 20-, 30-, and 40-percent equivalent potassium carboaate concentrations. These equilibrium data cover the operating range of the hot carbonate scrubbing system for removing carbon dioxide from gas mixtures. Such data are necessary to establish the limits of purification and are used to design absorption and regeneration towers. Values of K in the relationship K = (KHCO3)2/(K2CO3)PCO2 were determined for higher temperatures of 70" to 140° C. and greater concentrations, I 20 to 40 percent, than employed by previous investigators. For the 20- and 30-percent concentrations, K is constant at a given temperature; thus, once K has been determined the equilibrium pressure of carbon dioxide can be calculated for any conversion. Variation of & values with changing conversion was observed with the 40-percent solutions, so that equilibrium calculated pressures are less reliable from average K values.
