[During the past several years a great deal of discussion has centered around the question of the permissible limit of sulphur content in fuels for automotive and aviation motors. Under certain conditions of operation, sulphur in motor fuels causes the formation of corrosive substances which attach bearings, wrist pins, and other parts of engines. On the other hand, in making gas¬oline from certain stocks, the gasoline fraction normally contains a relatively large proportion of sulphur compounds. By the generally used processes of reducing the sulphur content, a significant part of the gasoline fraction is lost as motor fuel, and added expenses are entailed for chemicals, labor, and other process costs. This condition has been an economic burden to some refiners of high-sulphur crudes. In some instances the treating losses have been rather severe and the treating costs relatively high, but the data presented in this paper indicate that the reduction of sulphur content of motor fuel is a problem to a relatively small number of refiners and of little or no concern to the remainder; in fact, more then 90 per cent of the 153 samples analyzed passed the Federal specification requirement, which limits the sulphur content to 0.10 -nor cent. 3 This report is based upon the results of an examination for sulphur content, Doctor test, copper strip corrosion, and color of the samples collected during January, 1930, for the twenty-first semiannual gasoline survey of the Bureau of Mines. The results of the gravity and distillation tests of the survey were published as Report of Investigations 2995. "One of the proposed mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of silicosis is that inhaled silica dust activates a ""respiratory burst"" in pulmonary phagocytes, such as macrophages and neutrophils. This increase in oxidative metabolism results in enhanced generation of reactive oxygen species which if produced in excess, would overwhelm natural defense mechanisms and cause damage to the lung parenchyma. This damage would then result in scarring, fibrosis, and decreased gas exchange.Weiss and LoBuglio' have listed several oxygen species produced by phagocytes which may be involved in cellular injury. These oxidants include superoxide anion, hydrogen, peroxide, hydroxyl radical, and hypochlorous acid. Superoxide anion (0;) is generated from molecular oxygen by the plasma membrane bound enzyme NADPH oxidase according to the following reaction:Once generated, superoxide anion can form hydrogen peroxide:In the presence of myeloperoxidase and halide, hydrogen peroxide can form hypochlorous acid:Superoxide and hydrogen peroxide can also form highly reactive hydroxyl radicals. Hydroxyl radicals can be generated slowly by the Haber-Weiss reaction:In addition. hydroxyl radical production can be catalyzed via the Fenton reaction:Hydroxyl radicals can also be generated from the reaction of superoxide and hypochlorous acid as follows:Recent investigations suggest that, in addition to the reactive oxygen species discussed above, nitric oxide may be a potential mediator of silica-induced toxicity.2-4 Nitric oxide (NO') can be generated by the cytosolic enzyme nitric oxide synthase according to the following reaction:NO synthase exists in two forms. i.e.. a constitutive. Ca2+-calmodulin-dependent form and an inducible. Ca2+-calmodulin-independent form. In pulmonary phagocytes. the activity of the constitutive form of NO synthase is low. However. NO synthase can be induced in macrophages and neutrophils by a variety of stimulants such as lipopolysaccharide. interferon y. chemotactic peptide, platelet activating factor, or leukotriene B4.3.5Once generated. nitric oxide can combine with superoxide anion to form peroxynitrite as follows:Peroxynitrite is a potent oxidizing agent. In addition, peroxynitrite can form peroxynitrous acid. which in turn can produce hydroxyl radical and nitrogen dioxide (all of which exhibit strong oxidizing potential) by the following reactions:Oxygen metabolites have been shown to cause lung damage in vivo.6 Such damage includes edema. leakiness of the alveolar endothelial/epithelial barriers, and airway constriction.7 Superoxide and hydrogen peroxide have been associated with membrane damage and cell lysis.8 These oxidants have also been associated with alteration of cytoskeletal structures at cell-cell junctions and elevation of transepithelial conductance in cultured monolayers.9 Macrophages or neutrophils can be stimulated by bacteria or phorbol myristate acetate to produce sufficient oxidant levels to lyse lymphoma cells.10 This cell killing is inhibited by catalase but is unaffected by superoxide dismutase. hydroxyl radical scavengers. or azide. i.e., an inhibitor of peroxidase. This implicates hydrogen peroxide as the active oxidant. Similarly. Weiss et al.11 have reported that hydrogen peroxide is critical in the death of cultured endothelial cells due to neutrophil activation. In addition. hydroxyl radicals generated by monocytes have been associated with cell injury.12 Lastly. peroxynitrite has been shown to oxidize sulfhydryl groups and to inactivate proteinase inhibitor making the lung more susceptible to damage caused by phagocytotic enzymes.' Therefore. a strong case can be made that activated pulmonary macrophages and neutrophils are capable of causing oxidant injury. This chapter presents in vitro and in vivo data indicating that silica is associated with the production of reactive oxygen species from these pulmonary phagocytes."

The Helium Research Center, Helium Activity, Bureau of Mines, is presently engaged in a critical examination of all of the PVT data on helium that appear in the literature. The long-range objective is the development of a single equation of state for helium that will allow all of the thermodynamic properties to be calculated and will reproduce all of the data within the accuracy with which the data are known. A preliminary objective is to obtain the best values of the second virial coefficients and to develop an equation that will reproduce the best values as a function of temperature. The method of treatment consists in expressing the PV product of a gas, for a given isotherm, in terms of a power series in either the pressure or the density and evaluating the constants by least squares solution. Associated with these functions whose coefficients have been evaluated by least squares, the following errors, or deviations, are of interest; the standard error of a single measurement; the standard error in each coefficient; and the standard error of the resulting function.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a method to measure methane and other gases during the auger mining of coal. An intrinsically safe commercial gas detector with a built-in data logger was mounted in the center of the hollow conveying auger. A sampling head through the wall of the auger conducted a gas sample to the detector. Results showed that gas levels can be monitored on a continuous basis during the auger mining of coal and the data retrieved upon completion of the hole.

"The microscopic work described below was engaged in primarily into ascertain the approximate proportions in which the copper sulphides existed in the ore examined, and by a comparison of the results obtained from a study of both head are tailing samples to supply data which might be of value in treating the ore by flotation. Incidentally, the physical characteristics and association of the sulphides were noted in order to determine the possible relation or bearing of these features on the present conditions of treatment. Since the copper in the ore occurred as three distinct sulphide minerals - chalcopyrite, chalcocite, and bornite each containing copper in different proportions, there appeared to be little or no possibility of obtaining the desired information by chemical methods of determination.Type of material examinedThe material examined was in the crushed condition and was said to be representative of the flotation feed or heads and the resulting tailing. No hand samples of the ore were examined nor any account taken of the physical condition and association of the minerals in place, because the possible value of the analytical results depended on conditions as they existed in the crushed ore. As the problems under consideration dealt only with the sulphide minerals, especially those of copper, the products from screen sizing were concentrated by hand panning and the gangue discarded. The concentrate obtained consisted almost entirely of the sulphide minerals, since the panning had been very carefully done. The object of this procedure was to obtain a sufficient quantity of high-grade sulphide material, from the sample of each screen size selected for examination, to permit its being so prepared for examination as to be representative of the physical characteristics exhibited by a large number of sulphide grains from each respective size, In the tests and investigations carried on by the company' treating the ore the following sizes had been used in tabulating data and basing conclusions:+48, +65, +100, +150, +200, and -200. These same sizes were used in the microscopic investigation, since the results obtained thereby could be most readily utilized for comparison with the results obtained in previous experimental work, together with deductions based on actual concentration of the ore on a commercial scale."

This report is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on exploration, development, mining methods, and costs at various mines in the United States. It describes operations at the Black Rock mine, Wah Chang Mining Corp., Mono County, Calif. The purpose of these reports is to promote development and conservation of our mineral resources by disseminating technologic information on mining methods, practices, and costs. The Black Rock tungsten mine of the Wah Chang Mining Corp. is 33 miles north of Bishop, Calif., in the Benton Range, Mono County, Calif. The property was acquired in August 1950 and a well-planned program of exploration, development, and exploitation resulted in a good production record with low costs. Operations were halted in July 1957, about 6 months after suspension of the tungsten purchase program by the Federal Government.

In June 1942 , ' the Bureau of Mines selected the Zonia copper mine , near Kirkland , Yavapai County , Arizona , as a property meriting investigation in connection with its search for supplies of strategic minerals for use in the war . The following month , representatives of the War Production . Board conferred with Bureau officials and requested that the property be explored with the object of determining the tonnage and grade of ore that could be brought into production quickly and mined cheaply by open-pit methods . The work wa's designed to verify information submitted by the owners in support of an application for a Government loan. It was essential that the investigations be completed promptly , so that operations might be planned and copper produced for war needs . The investigations called for surface trenching , diamond drilling , and check sampling of underground workings . Unable to purchase equipment for trenching without considerable delay , the Bureau saved time by borrowing most of the necessary items from the Golden Queen mine of the Gold Fields Development Co. at Mohave , Calif. This company , whose engineers had sampled some of the old trenches , had a tentative agreement with the owners to operate and manage the Zonia mine in event the loan was granted . Additional equipment was borrowed from two Governmental agencies . The exploratory work , completed in 16 weeks , was carried on 7 days a week .

NOISE REDUCTION ACHIEVED BY THE ENCLOSURES WAS SUFPICIENT TO PERMIT REDUCTION OF CRUSHER ROOM NOISE TO 90 DBA, PROVIDED THAT OTHER SOURCES ARE APPROPRIATELY TREATED AND ACOUSTICAL ABSORPTION IS PROVIDED IN THE CRUSHER ROOM. SECONDARY CRUSHER NOISE WAS REDUCED 10 TO 15 DBA BY THE ENCLOSURES.

The results of a preliminary investigation of compressive strength versus length-diameter (L/D) ratios of potash specimens and the statistical treatment of the data are summarized in this report. The purpose of the study was to evaluate a laboratory method for obtaining estimates of the strength of potash pillars during robbing operations. The specific objectives of this preliminary investigation were to test the method and the reliability (confidence limits) of the data, and to determine the number of additional specimens necessary for given confidence limits. The specimens were taken from three sites at two mines in New Mexico. The statistical analyses included the determination of the confidence limits for the data and the number of additional specimens necessary to obtain confidence limits of ±500 and 100 psi. The testing method was found acceptable, and estimates of the comprehensive strength, within 1500 psi, could be obtained by testing about 110 additional specimens from the three sites. The compressive strength of the specimens tested fits an empirical equation of the type

The Bureau of Mines investigated two techniques for removing CaO from scheelite (CaW04) prior to electrolysis. In the first technique, a crude tungstic oxide (WO3) containing 0.15-percent lime (CaO) was prepared by digesting scheelite concentrates in hot hydrochloric acid. This oxide was used as cell feed to produce tungsten of 99.9-percent purity. The second technique used a high-temperature, two-phase separation, resulting in extraction of 99 percent of the WO3 in the halide-tungstate phase, while 90 percent of the CaO was retained in the silicate phase. Tungsten of 99.9-percent purity was deposited from the halide-tungstate melt after B203 and NaPO3 were added to form an electrolyte. The two methods were compared with a previously developed technique of depositing tungsten from scheelite concentrate fed directly to the electrolytic cell.

The apparatus described was developed for determining the kinetics of gas - solid reactions at high temperatures by measuring the volume of gas consumed with respect to time . This apparatus consists essentially of a horizontal precision- bore glass tube connecting a small reaction chamber in a furnace to a large constant - temperature reservoir . A drop of mercury in the tube separates the two sides of the system and serves as an indicator that moves at a speed proportional to the rate of gas consumption . The sensitivity of the apparatus depends inversely on both the density of the gas in the system and the cross - sectional area of the tube ; with a tube having an area of 0.079 cm² , the sensitivity for oxygen at 308 ° K and 0.5 atm is 20 cm/mg . The reproducibility of data with the volumetric apparatus is good .

The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated aqueous electrolysis as a means for reducing lead chloride prepared by ferric chloride leaching of galena concentrate: NaC1 PbS + 2FeC13 ? PbC12 + 2FeC12 + S°. During electrolysis, metal was produced from solid lead chloride in contact with the cathode rather than from lead in solution. Relatively high current densities--up to 300 amp/ft2--were possible when operating in this way. A very simple cell, having a horizontal lead cathode at the bottom and a vertical graphite anode at the top, was employed. Lead chloride crystals, covering the cathode, were converted to metal powder during electrolysis, and chlorine gas or FeCls was produced at the anode, depending on the electrolyte composition. Electrolytes tried included aqueous solutions of HCI, NaCl, NH4Cl, and FeC12-NaC1. Optimum results (96-pct current efficiency, 0.23 kwhr/lb Pb) were obtained with 20 pct HC1 at 25° C, using a current density of 15 amp/ft2 and an electrode spacing of 1 inch. When the current density was increased, the energy requirement increased also but only to 0.41 kwhr/lb at 150 amp/fr3 and 0.58 kwhr/lb at 300 amp/ft2.

This report covers a phase of an extraction project carried out as part of a research program on rare-earth technology. The current project--the production of pure cerium compounds--is an intermediate step between ore processing and metal reduction. In this connection, a study on a separatory-funne1 scale was made on nonreducing extractants for recovering cerium (IV) from tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) and of methods for recovering the cerium nitrate from the strip solution. Dilute sulfuric acid was found to be 100 percent effective in stripping cerium (IV). Several precipitants were effective in recovering the cerium from the strip solution, and ethanol was especially promising. A scaled-up investigation was made into the use of spray-tower type equipment to perform the function of extracting, washing, and stripping. This equipment, referred to as the pressure-bubbler, utilized the system developed on the separatory-funnel scale. Feed solutions were prepared from a bastnasite concentrate by two techniques. Of these, the sulfated bastnasite solution was most successful, resulting in 86-percent recovery of the cerium at 99.7+-percent purity.

Capital and operating costs were estimated using a wet suppression, fabric filter, and a combination system of the two for hypothetical hard rock stone crushing plants located in central Pennsylvania, operating at 300, 600, and 1,000 tons per hour. Fixed capital expenditure for the dust abatement systems ranged from $49,129 to $249,162. Annual operating costs for the dust abatement systems ranged from $8,394 to $46,606 (0.9 to 3.2 cents per ton). If these dust abatement systems are properly sized, installed, and maintained, efficiencies approaching 95 percent can be expected for reduction in weight of dust particles emitted before control.

Aqueous C12-02 leaching procedures developed by the Bureau of Mines to produce zinc chloride from zinc sulfide bulk concentrates were effective in extracting 99 pct of the zinc and 97 pet of the silver contained in samples of massive seafloor sulfides from the southern Juan de Fuca Ridge. Zinc sulfide (sphalerite and wurtzite) mineralization comprised 55 and 88 pct of two specimens provided by the U.S. Geological Survey for this study. Minor occurrences of galena, chalcopyrite, and other minerals in the sulfides permitted the recovery of pregnant liquors that were low in metal values other than zinc, which were successfully purified by a two-step cementation procedure using zinc dust.

In 1985, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 27,930 acres of the 52,000 acre East Fork High Rock Canyon Wilderness Study Area, CA-020-914/NV-020-006A, in order to evaluate the mineral resources. The study area is located in Humboldt and Washoe Counties, NV, about 45 miles east of Cedarville, CA. Bureau of Mines personnel reviewed pertinent literature and county mining records and examined prospects or mineralized areas. There are no organized mining districts and no historical or active claims in the study area; one small pit lies in the southwest corner of the study area. Based on published literature, sample results and field observations, there are no recognized mineral, geothermal, or fossil fuel resources. Epithermal mineralization indicators are not present or exposed. Sand and gravel deposits in the study area are not likely to be developed as other deposits are closer to market areas.

From the standpoint of known recoverable reserves, the following is the order of importance of the beds: Upper Kittaoning, Lower Kittanning, Upper Freeport, Lower Freeport, Middle Kittaning, Clarion, Pittsburgh, and Redstone. 2. mown measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, me estimated at 1,859 million short tons as of January 1, 1952. Of this, 1,351 million short tons me in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimates because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.
