It is with some diffidence that I venture to address the Montreal Section of the Society of Chemical industry on the subject of motor fuel from coal at a time when crude petroleum is produced in greater quantities than at any time in history, and at a time when the known reserves exceed all expectations, even the optimistic estimates of the Committee of Eleven of the American Petroleum Institute. Not only are new fields being discovered in America a -an embarrassing frequency but sources outside of the North American Continent show, unmistakable signs of adding materially to the world's sources of oil. Were it not for the tremendous scientific and technical importance of the work done in the past few years in transforming coal into liquid motor fuels, I should prefer to let this subject rest until a more propitious time, such as prevailed some years ago, when the gasoline consumption curve was rising rapidly and the production curve was slowing in its upward rise. That was the period which stimulated the researches which resulted in tetra ethyl lead and anti-knock gasolines on this side of the Atlantic and in methanol, synthetic gasoline and hydrogenation of coal on the other side. Some of you will recall a symposium on Motor Fuels and Oil Conservation held at the Chemists' Club n New York in September; 1925. Dr. R. L. Brown and I presented a paper at this meeting on "Complete Utilization of Coal and Motor, Fuel, in which we pointed out that coal was the most likely raw material source of gasoline substitutes if and when needed. We grouped the present and future, processes' for obtaining motor fuel from coal in three classes, namely:

"INTRODUCTION The strategic importance of zinc warranted investigation of the Silver Eagle zinc prospect, which was first examined by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of Mines in January 1943.From October 12, 1943, to March 16, 1944, the Bureau explored the deposit by trenching, core drilling, and sampling to establish the amount and grade of ore and to test for the presence of sulfide-ore minerals at depth.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. It is now widely accepted that horizontal stress is present nearly everywhere underground. Often it is more severe than the vertical stress. It is a major cause of roof control problems in underground mines. The AHSEM computer program contains two modules to improve mine layouts for control of horizontal stress. For development, the user specifies the orientations of the maximum horizontal stress, the entries, and the crosscuts. Angled crosscuts may be used, and the angles may be different for the right- and left-hand crosscuts. AHSEM then shows the user how the stress condition would vary as the entry and crosscut orientations are changed. The second module is for longwall mining. Severe stress concentrations can make headgate conditions hazardous when the entries are improperly oriented. AHSEM shows whether a particular longwall orientation and extraction sequence places the headgate corner in a stress concentration or in stress relief. It also estimates the magnitude of the stress concentration.

"With a view of elucidating the role of glutathione (GSH) in the biochemical pathways of the chromate-exposure related carcinogenesis, we carried out electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopic investigations of the chromate-GSH redox reactions. The ESR measurements, employing spin-traps, provide evidence for the involvement of the glutathione (GS•) radical, as well as an isolable Cr(V)-glutathione intermediate. These results indicater a new mechanism for the reduction of chromate by GSH in cellular environment and help understand the (unexpected increase in Cr(VI)-induced DNA strand breaks at elevated GSH levels.We report here indirect electron spin resonance (EGR evidence for the involvement of the glutathionyl (GS) radical and direct evidence for a Cr(V) intermediate in the reactions of glutathione ¬(GSH) with chromate for the first time.. This work was undertaken to clarify the biochemical pathway of the reduction of chromate by GSH, since this reduction process is thought to be a critical step in the pathogenesis of the chromate-exposure related carcinogenesis. This follows from the literature reports which show that (a) Cr(VI)compounds have been proven to be carcinogens in laboratory animals as well as in human studies2-4, (b) Cr(VI) and not Cr(III) compounds are mutagenic 5-7, (c) Cr(VI) and not Cr(III) compounds can penetrate cell membranes 8.9 (d) the final state of Cr(VI) in cellular reductions is Cr(III)', (e) by itself chromate (or Cr(VI)) cannot be directly mutagenic since Cr(VI) is known not to interact with isolated DNA under physiological conditions 10, suggesting the significance of Cr(VI).reduction processes. One of the major reductants in cellular environments is thought to be the GSH, both outside and inside the ce11s 11-13. Other evidence for the role of GSH in the chromate toxicity is seen from recent studies showing that exposure of hamster cells to non-toxic levels of added selenite increases the levels' of GSH as well as the Cr(VI)-induced DNA strand beaks 14, and thatsuch DNA strand breaks in hepatocytes also change in direct proportion to their GSH content 15,16. These observations wereinterpreted as implying that the reduction of chromate by GSH, to some reactive intermediate is an important step in the chromatecarcinogenicity 15,16. Previous Work . The Bureau of Mines reported a survey of bond clays for graphite crucibles at the American Mining Congress which met at St. Louis in November , 1919 *** . The report contained information in regard to : (a) tests carried on to determine the effect of substituting Canadian and Alabama graphites for Ceylon graphite in varying proportions . The data indicated that Alabama graphite is superior to Canadian graphite and further , that Alabama can be substituted for Ceylon graphite to a large measure without lowering the quality of the ware . These tests were made on No. 70 size brass melting crucibles and were carried out under foundry practice . (b ) Tests were reported in which an attempt was made to modify the nature of Alabama graphite by heat treatment so as to resemble Ceylon graphite . Little advantage from the treatment was reported . With this general information as a basis , the experimental work proceeded along two lines : A study of bond clays for steel -melting crucibles and for brass -melting crucibles . Twenty- one sets of standard-size crucibles were made up of a body containing Ceylon graphite as standard , bonded with 21 bond clays . These tests were carried out under foundry practice as were the former tests . Three domestic clays proved to be superior to the standard Klingenberg clay formerly used in brass -melting practice while in the steel - melting industry , 13 domestic clays gave service superior to Klingenberg clay .

A continuous method has been developed for preparing thiolacetic acid . Acetic anhydride and hydrogen sulfide are passed concurrently over an amine ion- exchange resin , under 20 - psi pressure . The thiolacetic acid , a product of the reaction , is flashed continuously from the crude reaction mixture and is purified by fractional distillation . The yield of thiolacetic acid is in excess of 80 percent based on the acetic anhydride charged . INTRODUCTION In the synthesis of reference compounds needed in the identification of sulfur compounds in petroleum , thiolacetic acid has become an important reagent because of its use in the synthesis of thiols by addition to appropriate olefins : R - CH = CH₂ + CH3 - COSH R- CH2 - CH2 - S - COCH R - CH2 - CH₂ - SH + CH3COONa NaOH (1 ) The commonly used procedures for its preparation , as described by Clark and Hartman (1 )4 and by Ellingboe (2 ) , are based on the batchwise reaction of acetic anhydride with hydrogen sulfide :

The principle of explosive crushing depends upon the fact that an expandable substance contained within the pores of a solid body will disrupt such a body upon expansion. Such expansion may be obtained by the detonation of an explosive or by the sudden release of pressure of a superheated liquid. That this principle of disruption may be applied to minerals rests on the fact that cracks, cleavage planes, and pores exist in all minerals to an extent hardly conceived possible heretofore. Crushing by this method takes advantage of forces applied from within the mineral rather than from forces applied from without. The application of a force from within would appear to be more effective.

Until man was able to produce light, his working day was pretty much limited to daylight hours. Underground miners have a special problem because in a mine it is just as dark during daytime as it is at night. The first devices used for mine lighting were torches and open flame 011 lamps. Torches made from twisted grass and dipped in tallow or pine pitch would burn for a while, but they made a lot of smoke and probably went out when they were needed most. During the 15001s, miners lamps consisted of a small metal dish with a hook attached to hang it up. The saucer-shaped dish was filled with animal or fish oil and a wick made of twisted fibers was laid In the 011 and hung over one edge where it would burn. This lamp would burn longer than a torch, but the amount of light cast by the pale, flickering flame was probably only a little better than no light at all.

No producing mines are in the study area. Sample results indicate the only resources in the study area are low grade phosphate deposits associated with Cuyama Phosphate Mine (fig. 1). Within the study area, are more than 21.4 million tons of inferred subeconomic phosphate rock resources which would be reserves at an 80 percent higher phosphoric acid price; weighted average grade is 4.84 percent phosphorous pentoxide (P205). About 17.6 million tons of similar grade are outside the area to the northwest. The South Cuyama Oil Field, adjacent to the study area (fig. 1), produces petroleum from the Vaqueros Formation which underlies parts of the study area. Oil and gas potential was evaluated by U.S. Geological Survey. INTRODUCTION Location, Size, and Geographic Setting The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral survey of the Fox Mountain RARE II area (No. 5120) during the summer of 1981. The area was examined to determine the presence or absence of mineral resources and reserves, and to estimate tonnage and grade where possible.

The San Juan Mine and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted a study to measure how development mining affected bolt loads. Twelve fully grouted, instrumented roof bolts were installed at two three-way intersections as part of the standard bolting pattern. Newly developed miniature data acquisition systems (MIDAS) were used to measure bolt load changes during initial face advance and cross-cut breakthrough. The effects of cut placement and depth on roof bolt loads were studied. This test showed how bolt loads increased at five positions along the bolt length during initial mining. Both entry advance and cross-cut breakthrough produced a similar percentage of increase in bolt loads. Geologic differences between the test sites were probably responsible for the differences in amounts of bolt loading. The test site with more top coal and a higher rock quality designation (RQD) had lower bolt loads.

The mineral industry of Afghanistan improved substantially in 1976 as asbestos production was begun and feasibility studies were made of possible copper and iron and steel industries. The remarkable event of the year was the introduction of Afghanistan's 7-year economic and social development plan which covered the years 2976-82. The 7-year plan established ambitious goals for a gross national product (GNP) annual growth rate of 6.3% during its duration. To achieve this target, large increases in expenditures for economic development were programed in virtually every sector of the economy. Foreign assistance, in particular, was expected to finance a large share of new development projects. The major components of the plan were the development of transportation (highways and railroads), oil and gas exploration, construction of a copper smelter to exploit the copper deposits near Kabul, and development of an iron and steel industry to exploit the rich iron ore deposits in the central part of the country. Exports during the plan period were to continue to be principally agriculture products and natural gas to the U.S.S.R.

The Bureau of Mines has installed passive water explosion barriers in two operating mines to determine their usefulness in U.S. coal mines. The primary objective of this field trial was to determine the effect of the explosion barriers on mining operations. Data were also obtained on the ability of the barriers to withstand the mine environment and on the effect of the barriers on belt operation, ventilation, worker travel, and rock dusting. Fifty barriers were installed at three separate beltway locations, and periodic inspections were made. A year after installation, no defects of the barriers or support hardware were detected, nor was any complaint as to the presence of the barriers made by the mine personnel. To date, 2-1/2 years after installation, the barriers have had no detrimental ef-fect on rock dusting, belt operation, or ventilation. Costs of material, fabrication, and installation are reported herein.

Ignition and flammability test methods were developed by the Bureau of Mines for use in the classification of flammable solids by the Department of Transportation. A rotating disk ignition apparatus and a flame-spread-rate apparatus are proposed for determining the ignitability and flammability, respectively, of most flammable solids. Extremely flammable solids, such as pyrophoric materials, are evaluated by determining their ease of spontaneous ignition in an environmental chamber at high-humidity conditions. Data are presented for various representative solids to show the reliability of the test methods for classifying the materials. A classification system is also proposed for use in government transportation regulations.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the synthesis of advanced ceramics (SiC+AlN, SiAlON, SiC+A1203, and Si3N4+AlN) from natural clays (kaolin, halloysite, or montmorillonite) by an intercalation and heat treatment method. This process includes the steps of refining a clay, intercalating organic chemicals into its layered structure, drying the intercalated mixture, firing the treated structure at certain temperature ranges in controlled atmospheres to form desired compounds, and grinding the loosely agglomerated structure. Focus of this research is to economically process advanced ceramic structures from abundant natural resources. The advanced ceramic phases produced in this simple treatment are homogeneously distributed at the nanostructure level, and may potentially lead to cost effective manufacturing processes. The intercalation of clay was confirmed by X-ray and BET analyses. The evolution of chemical compositions during carbonization reactions and carbothermal reduction was investigated. The characteristics of refined clays and synthesized powders were studied. Advanced ceramic composites/solid solution have been produced from intercalated clays, without the presence of other compounds.

Advances in mining technology have enabled deeper seams of coal to be mined from the surface. Highwall mining is frequently used to mine areas at the perimeters of a surface mine when removal of the overburden becomes uneconomical or threatens environmentally sensitive surface features. At the same time, advances in materials and technology have enabled highwall mining of coal that create blind headings over 300 meters in length. Deeper surface mining and deeper highwall penetration depths have lead to more frequent encounters with methane gas. While this coal is remotely mined from the surface, underground ignitions of methane have propagated to the surface and injured miners. Methods described in this paper show how this hazard can be correctly monitored and controlled for auger type highwall mining machines. Research indicates that small quantities of gas liberated during mining migrate to the face, creating higher gas concentrations than would otherwise be expected. Using the same principles that cause the gas to migrate to the face, researchers have shown that inert gas introduced at the collar of the hole can inert the entire hole, thus ensuring safe conditions for mining.

Reduce the exposure of diesel vehicle operators to diesel exhaust generated during mucking in deadend drifts. Approach Direct the diesel engine exhaust upward and rearward thereby using the thermal buoyancy of the hot exhaust to form a layer at the roof, above the breathing zone of the vehicle operator. Modifying the Exhaust Outlets Diesel front-end loaders used in nocoal mines to remove blasted ore usually operate in entries open only at one end to cross cut ventilation. These deadend drifts are not usually ventilated with the use of auxiliary fans and vent tubing because of frequent blasting. The existing ventilation, therefore, is usually poor, and a diesel engine operating in such a drift emits exhaust which is not immediately swept away from the operator. On most load machines, the diesel engine's exhaust outlet is located near the floor and directed downward or to the side, so that when the hot exhaust is emitted, it mixes with the mine air as it rises into the vehicle operator's breathing zone. In this way, a uniform concentration of diesel exhaust forms around the operator.

"The diesel particulate matter (DPM), a constituent of the diesel engine exhausts, is known to be a potential carcinogen. 1- 3 Consequently, suitable methods to control/eliminate DPM have ·been under investigation in recent years. The DPM can be controlled by using fibrous ceramic traps. However, clogging of traps by DPM requires the impractical periodic trap replacement. Following the recent work by Garner and Dent,4,5 we are investigating the in situ use of microwaves to regenerate the ceramic traps, thereby eliminating the trap replacement step in this process. The use of microwaves instead of conventional heating for trap regeneration has the advantage of selective heating of the DPM instead of the trap, if the trap absorbs insignificant microwave power relative to the DPM. Also, the oxidation characteristics of the DPM are needed to understand fully this regeneration process.The rate of energy absorption P per unit volume of a sample is given byP = wE"" |Eo|2 • (1 )where w is the angular frequency, |E0|2 is the intensity of the microwave radiation, and E” is the imaginary part of the dielectric constant (E = E’ + iE”) . Thus measurements of E11 for DPM and ceramic trap material are needed to determine their capacities for microwave absorption. In this paper, we report these measurements carried out at · a frequency of 8.7 GHz. Following microwave absorption, the DPM is expected to oxidize. The oxidation characteristics of the DPM have been investigated using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy of the evolved gases CO2 and CO and using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Finally, some information on the structure of carbon in DPM has emerged from the analysis of its x-ray diffraction spectra. Results of these experiments are reported in the following pages."
