Recrystallization studies on chrome-bearing spinel materials were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine the effects of certain fluxing agents and cooling rates on the chromium-to-iron ratio of recrystallized spinel. Statistically designed and evaluated tests showed that the ratio of chromium to iron in naturally occurring chrome spinel could be increased from 1.5 to 1 to over 7 to 1 and that the ratio of chromium to iron in the chrome-spinel in a stain-less steel slag could be raised to over 18 to 1. Silica, magnesia, and lime had significant positive effects, while alumina had a significant negative effect. Cooling rates of 200 C per hour in a programmed spiral globar electric furnace were satisfactory for growing crystals of recoverable size.

"INTRODUCTION The district comprising Union, Lafayette, Pontotoc and Calhoun Counties, Miss. (fig. 1), was examined in October 1941 by R. W. Smith of the Bureau of Mines, accompanied by J. W. Adams of the Mississippi Bauxite Co. 3/ Subsequently, geologists of the Federal Geological Survey made a more detailed study of the area. 4/Bauxite had been reported as present in several localities in Pontot. County, and large deposits of kaolin are known in Pontotoc, Union, Calhoun, and Lafayette Counties. Many of the bauxite deposits, such as those on Big Hill, Second Hill, and Third Hill, in Pontotoc County, form the caps on hills and are outliers of Wilcox deposits on the Midway formation. Such deposits could have no extensions because of erosion and were not examined, as they were investigated by the Mississippi Geological Survey. 5/ Most of the bauxite was known to be low-grade, with a high iron content. However, Pontotoc County in particular presented possibilities of finding high-grade bauxite with a low iron content by drilling down the dip from the Wilcox-Midway contact. Consequently, with few exceptions the investigation was confined to drilling in this direction.Headquarters were established in Tupelo, Miss., on July 13, 1943, and mineral agreements were obtained covering 8,367 acres of land, with 62 land-owners in Pontotoc and Union Counties. Holes were drilled on properties of three of the landowners in Union County and 36 in Pontotoc County."

Based on previous Bureau of Mines research indicating that improved high-temperature properties could be achieved for periclase refractories through chemical additions, the Bureau investigated the properties of full-size bricks produced from chemically modified periclase refractory grains and the suitability of making such chemical additions to Mg(OH)2 slurries prior to production of the periclase grains. In full-size brick testing, strength values, both hot and cold, for the optimized bricks were superior to those for a commercial 98-wt-pct-MgO refractory. The best results were obtained for a natural magnesite with an adjusted CaO:Si02 (C:S) ratio of 3.0 and a 1.0-wt-pct addition of Zr02 and for a seawater periclase with an adjusted C:S ratio of 2.5 and a 0.5-wt-pct addition of Mn02. For samples produced from chemically modified Mg(OH)2 slurries, additions of both Mn02 and Zr02 and an increase in C:S ratios produced significant increases in hot flexural strength, similar to those resulting from chemical additions made to periclase grains. The most effective modifications were additions of Mn02 to brine-derived periclases having a C:S ratio adjusted to 3.0. These results on chemically modified magnesia refractories indicate that such material could potentially substitute for magnesiachrome refractories containing imported chromite.

"INTRODUCTION The Philipsburg Mining District, Granite County, Mont., has been the largest producing area for battery-grade manganese (70 percent MnO2) in the United States since the First World War. Two companies, the Trout Mining Division of the American. Machine & Meals Co., and the Moorlight Mining Co., have intermittently mined and milled 120 to 250 tons of 25-percent manganese ore per day for the production of concentrates of this grade.Investigation of the district by engineers of the Federal Geological Survey and Bureau of Mines indicated that further exploration and develop¬ment would make available additional oxide and carbonate manganese ores for milling and production of metallurgical-grade manganese. If the battery-grade producers converted their plants to the production of metallurgical-grade concentrates, their production also could be increased through greater recoveries.Until February 1, 1944, the Metals Reserve Company, through its agent, the Sunshine Mining Co., purchased milling-grade manganese oxide and carbonate are for stock-piling at Philipsburg. After that time, only carbonate ore was purchased. Based upon the assumption that the stock pile was a true cross-section sample of the producing area, metallurgical studies were made on representative samples from the Metals Reserve stock piles. Testing also was conducted on two other samples of Philipsburg oxide manganese ore obtained by engineers of the Bureau of Mines from the Little Dandy claim of the Donlan group and from the Marie mine. All ore samples tested were found to be amenable to concentration by ore-dressing methods for the production of concentrates that when sintered met Metals Reserve Company specifications for metallurgical-grade manganese."

The densities of LiF, NaF, and KF, of binary mixtures of these alkali fluorides, and of binary mixtures of UF4, ThF4, YF3, LaF3, and CeF with each of tie alkali fluorides were measured as functions of the melt composition and temperature. Molar volumes at 1,000° C were calculated for all the mixtures. Binary systems containing LiF exhibited molar volume ideality. Binary fluoride systems containing either NaF or KF as the alkali fluoride exhibit positive deviations from molar volume additivity. However, molar volumes in the NaF-KF system are ideal.

"Chromates are known to induce tumors (1, 2), mutations (3), and DNA damage (4-6). However, the underlying biochemical mechanism(s) is (are) not fully understood (6). Recent studies have indicated that hydroxyl (·OH) radical may play an important role (7-11). The mechanistic studies of Cr(Vl)-related ·OH radical generation in biochemical systems have shown the reaction of a Cr(V) species with hydrogen peroxide (H20 2 } through a Fenton-like mechanism to be one of the important steps (9-11): Cr(V) + H20 2 - Cr(VI) + ·OH + OH-. (1)In biological systems the Cr(V) species are generated via the reduction of Cr(VI) by a variety of components, such as microsomes (12), mitochondria (13), mitochondrial electron transfer complexes (14), and at least three flavoenzymes (glutathione reductase (GSSG-R),3 lipoyl dehydrogenase, and ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase) (9, 15, 16). In the case of flavoenzymes, Cr(V) formation is accompanied by the reduction of molecular oxygen ( 0 2 ) to H20 2 • The Cr(V) species then reduces H20 2 to generate •OH radicals and Cr(VI) (16).To understarid the mechanism by which Cr(V}-generated ·OH radicals cause cytotoxicity, Aiyar et al. A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations No. 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the seventeenth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project, except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a study conducted to determine the relationship of mineral habit to particle size and shape characteristics for prismatic, acicular, fibrous, and asbestiform varieties of tremolite. Particle measurements were made with the petrographic microscope at X 1,250 and the scanning electron microscope at magnifications up to X 10,000. All of the varieties of tremolite, upon Wiley milling, produced a significant percentage of particles that meet the Federal regulatory criteria for counting as asbestos fibers. However, only the asbestiform variety gave milled particles that fell into a size range of >10 µm in length and <0.5 µm in width; some medical scientists consider this range significant for production of adverse health effects.

The Bureau of Mines, as a part of its goal to minimize occupational hazards associated with mining and mineral processing operations, has developed and field tested a compact exhaust air muffler for mechanized, jumbo-mounted pneumatic rock drills. The muffler is constructed of 1/8-inch sheet steel and has nominal dimensions of 1-3/4 by 9 by 13 inches. A directed air passage, flexible neoprene baffles, and an expandable slit-type outlet are incorporated to reduce drill exhaust air noise and eliminate muffler icing. Field tests in actual mining operations showed a l5-dbA reduction in exhaust noise and an 8-to 12-dbA reduction in overall drilling noise with no icing problems or decrease in drill performance. Data are presented on muffler construction, laboratory, and field test results.

This report describes development and application by the Bureau of Mines of techniques and instruments for using radioactive inert-gas tracers to determine flow paths through petroleum reservoirs that have natural fracture systems and for which water injection has been selected as the stimulative production method. A field test was made to prove the techniques and evaluate instrumentation. The feasibility of applying the techniques and instruments to the solution of reservoir problems in other stimulative methods of production also is discussed. Oil commonly is displaced from sandstone host rocks by the action of a driving force that causes the oil to move through interstices of the rock and into production wells. In addition to the requirements of oil being trapped within the sand pores and the presence of an effective displacement mechanism, the rock itself must have adequate permeability to permit flow of oil and other fluids.

The Eagle Silver mine is in the Rush Valley mining district, Tooele County, Utah, and is now operated by the Hampton Mining Co. The property, originally referred to as the Argent, is reported to have been one of the first discoveries in the district. The early operators mined ore to a depth of 850 feet, at which point the property was abandoned because of excessive water. During 1905 the Honerine tunnel was driven into the area approximately 1,800 feet below the collar of the Argent shaft. This tunnel served to drain the levels above and operations were resumed. Ore deposits in the Eagle Silver mine occur in the Galena King lime-stone, a 20-to 60-foot member of interbedded quartzite and limestone in the Oquirrh formation of Pennsylvanian age. This member has been faulted along the bedding, forming the Galena King gouge. Mineralization commonly occurs in or near this gouge area in a brecciated, highly altered, pipelike zone. The known ore shoots occur in association with the breccia pipe, commonly adjacent to cross faulting and porphyry intrusions. In general, two ore shoots have been mined on the upper levels of the mine, one lying to the east and the other to the west of the breccia zone. The Bureau of Mines diamond-drilling program was begun during the latter part of 1948 and completed early in 1949. Nine holes were drilled, aggregating 852.8 feet. Sludge and core samples from mineralized sections were analyzed in the Salt Lake City laboratories. A total of 87 sludge, 71 core, and 11 chip samples was submitted for analysis.

Acid leaching of selected copper sulfide minerals, impure copper sulfide flotation concentrates, and a cement copper precipitate at elevated temperatures and pressures was investigated. Copper extractions of 97 to 99 pct were obtained by leaching chalcopyrite and the flotation concentrates with water under oxidizing conditions at 200° C for 30 to 60 min. In tests with bornite, chalcocite,and cement copper, addition of sulfuric acid or pyrite to the autoclave was required to obtain similar copper extractions. The chemistry of leaching copper minerals was studied. It was determined that different copper sulfides altered to covellite as one step in their dissolution.

"The mathematical treatments used in the evaluation of particle size distribution from pipet-withdrawal centrifuge data are reviewed. An error in the published procedure for multiple-sample withdrawal systems is pointed out and a corrected formulation is presented. An alternative treatment, based on a piece-wise linearization of the size distribution is described. Computer simulations of the analytical and data evaluation procedures indicate that the errors in the original formulation are not generally serious and that the corrected and alternative procedures lead to very similar estimates. Except for some cases involving very narrow size distributions, the alternative approach appears to give slightly closer estimates of the size distribution. Comparisons based on actual experimental data are also described.1 IntroductionSedimentation methods are widely used for the determination of particle size distributions. The procedures are relatively simple to use and the results are essentially absolute, requiring no external calibration. Gravity sedimentation is typically applicable to particles in the size range of about I to 50 pm and generally involves measurement of the relative concentration of particles as a function of depth and time in a dilute suspension. To extend or delimit the known ore reserves of the Black Wonder manganese de-posit, the Bureau of Mines undertook an exploration project consisting of trenching, underground excavation, long-hole drilling, and sampling. The mineralization is spread over 6 square miles containing numerous small individual manganese deposits. There has been only small production from some of these deposits; however, simultaneous operations from many such small deposits could contribute considerably to the production from the district. A custom mill to treat oxide ore for battery use was built near Patterson in 1942 by the General Dry Batteries Co., Inc. It operated during World War II and was removed in 1944 when the manganese mines ceased operation. Except for some small experimental shipments, there has been no activity in the district since that time.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts prelimi¬nary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, Oliver C. Ralston, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests.The project was under the immediate supervision of Mitchell H. Kline, chief, Raleigh Division, Mining Branch.LOCATIONThe Chesapeake Corp. deposit is reached from West Point, Va., by driving west on State Route 33 to the junction of State Route 634, approximately 5 miles. Proceed southeast along State Route 634 about three-quarters of a mile, at which point an old longing road turns north along a ridge and leads to the marl outcrops about one-half mile distant. The Philbates property lies three-quarters of a mile farther west along State Route 33 from the junction with State Route 634. The property lies north of State Route 33 and east of State Route 623 (fig. 1). The marl deposits are on the north end of the farm. The Chesapeake Corp. tract comprises 174 acres and the Philbato property 58 acres."

The selective recovery of nickel and cobalt from impure raw materials is being investigated by the Bureau of Mines as part of a program to develop improved procedures for preparation of pure metals. A combination solvent extraction-electrolytic process has been developed in the laboratory that enables preparation of high-quality nickel and cobalt from nickel oxide containing, in percent, 76 nickel, 0.8 cobalt, 0.5 magnesium, 0.2 iron, and lesser quantities of copper, zinc, and other metals. The oxide was smelted, using carbon as reductant, and cast into anodes. These anodes subsequently were dissolved in diaphragm-type electrolytic cells. Nickel and cobalt were deposited separately from appropriate electrolytes, concurrent with dissolution of the impure anodes. Anolyte containing nickel and cobalt in the form of chlorides and sulfates was treated for removal of impurities and separation of nickel and cobalt. First, iron and aluminum were removed as hydroxides by adding nickel hydroxide to raise the pH of the anolyte from 2.3 to 4.5. Next, the pH was adjusted to 2 by adding hydrochloric acid, and the solution was treated by solvent extraction to separate nickel and cobalt.

The western Mesabi range nonmagnetic taconites containing about 34 percent Fe were evaluated by the Bureau of Mines in a 900-pound-per-hour pilot plant employing a selective flocculation-desliming-cationic flotation technique. The flotation step was a reverse flotation process and involved the flotation of the gangue minerals. The objective of the research was to increase the availability of domestic raw materials for the iron and steel industry. The beneficiated ores yielded concentrates containing 62 to 64 percent Fe and less than 5.5 percent Si02 with accompanying iron recoveries that averaged about 75 percent. Comparable flotation results were obtained with either fresh or 80 to 90 percent reclaimed water. Recycled waters having turbidities as high as 5,000 ppm Si02 did not affect the flotation process. Reclaimed waters containing residual calcium contents of less than 10 ppm gave better flotation concentrates than those containing 15 ppm.
