In 2007, a total of 2,030 coal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Coal mines comprised 13.7% of all mining operations. ? Bituminous mines comprised 92.4% (n=1,875) and anthracite mines 7.6% (n=155) of coal mining operations. ? Approximately 72% of all coal mines were located in three states: Kentucky (28.4%), West Virginia (22.6%), and Pennsylvania (20.5%).

One of the initial projects under the oil-shale research and development phase of the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act, Public- Law 290, 78th Congress, approved April 5, 1944, was a survey of oil shales of the United States for the selection of a site for an oil-shale demonstration plant. The oil shales were assayed by the conventional Bureau of Mines retort method proposed by Karrick and described by Guthrie in a more recent publication. From previous experience and that had in making these assays, it became evident that the assay method should be modified or replaced by a more satisfactory one. There are several outstanding objections to the Bureau of Mines oil-shale assay method: (1) the oil yields are frequently smaller than those obtained by other types of assay equipment and by commercial retorts; (2) the assayed oil yield represents only a portion of the organic matter in the shale, which under more favorable conditions, may, Jae converted, more completely into oil; (3) the retorting procedure is controlled mainly by trial-and-error methods; and (4) the assay requires approximately 6 hours for completion.

The 19th National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Contest was held in the Civic Center, Charleston, w. Va., on October 2, 3, and 4, 1961. The meet was sponsored by the Bureau of Mines and the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association, in cooperation with State mine inspection agencies, management and labor of the mineral extractive industries, and other groups interested in safety. The Arrangements Committee, as authorized by the General Committee, made the necessary arrangements for conducting the 1961 contest. Members of the Arrangements Committee were: George Trevorrow (chairman), Bituminous Coal Operators' Association; James B. "INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYThe Guymard mine in Orange County, N. Y., is reported to have been discovered in 1862 and mined until 1876, producing 10,000 tons of lead and zinc ore. 2/The property was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines 3/ in 1948. Development work was done by the Bureau in April and May 1949 and March 1950. During these two periods four drill holes totaling 2,090 feet were completed. To determine whether preheating coals before carbonization would improve the coking properties of the coals, particularly the weaker coking coals, 3 coals, 1 each from Illinois, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania, and a blend of the Illinois with a Pocahontas coal were preheated before testing for coking properties in the Bureau's BM-AGA pilot oven. The effects of preheating on the chemical and physical proper-ties of the coals and on the yields of carbonization products and strength of the coke produced from the preheated coals were determined, as were also the effects of bulk density, gaseous atmosphere, and residence time during preheating. Most benefit from preheating was found with weaker or oxidized coking coals, whereas the more strongly coking coals and blends showed little effect. Direct charging of preheated coal to the coke oven without cooling gave better coke, increased yield of tar, and decreased yield of gas. INTRODUCTION Although 94 percent of today's coal production comes from fields east of the Mississippi, the Eastern States have only about one-third of the Nation's recoverable reserves. West Virginia, which now produces more than any other State, has much smaller reserves than Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming.5/ However, the manufacture of iron and steel in Western States, which has increased greatly since World War I, is handicapped by the scarcity of high-grade coking coals, such as are plentiful in the Appalachian region. Unless a practical method of improving the cokemaking property of local coals is developed, ferrous metallurgical industries in the West must continue to use inferior coking coals and to pay high shipping charges for better coals.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United states Bureau of Mines describing mining and milling methods and costs at industrial mineral plants throughout the United states. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods and equipment used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs might, in many instances, cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention' of the reader? is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. P. J. Weisel, Inc., with office at La Habra and plant at Corona, Calif., is the only local company that produces sand for the Los Angeles glass factories, although silica sand for other purposes is produced in other parts of southern California and the adjacent portions of Nevada. The deposit at Corona consists of coarse sand imbedded in a whitish clay and differs greatly from the other deposits, which are fine-grained sandstone that must be crushed before it can be screened and washed. The preparation of Corona sand has to be thorough and includes grinding in tube mills, repeated washing and rinsing, removal of dust by air separation, and magnetic separation of iron and other minerals. This requires a plant with a complicated flow sheet. The first plant built did not make a. satisfactory glass sand, and many additions and changes were necessary. It is thought that the present flow sheet will remain substantially unchanged until a new plant is built. The design of a new plant would be simpler, but the process would be the same.

Mining began in Pend Oreille and Stevens Counties about 1885, Lead and zinc have been the principal products, and the area has supplied nearly all the output of these metals in the State. Fend Oreille County's output of lead and zinc from 1902 to 1956 was 110,700 and 229,600 tons, respectively. The Stevens County total was 54,100 tons of lead and 87,600 tons of zinc. Copper ore was produced mainly from the United Copper mine, Chewelah district, from 1912 to 1920; the principal gold mine was the First Thought, Orient district, which was active from 1904 to 1942. Approximately 225 mines and prospects produced; most of the ventures were on a small scale. The total value of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc produced from 1902 to 1956 was $75.2 million in Pend Oreille County and $39.4 million in Stevens County. INTRODUCTION In compiling the figures for this report, use was made of Bureau of Mines permanent records of nine production, the annual tabulations of producing mines, and the Minerals Yearbook. Requests to publish individual data, obtained from the annual production canvass, were made to the latest recorded operators of all mines in the area. Response to this request was good; therefore, it was possible to make the tables nearly complete. In a few instances the producer requested that the production data remain confidential, and in others it was not possible to reach the mine operator at his last known address. The district and county tables combine statistics for all mines, including those mines whose output could not be published separately.

"INTRODUCTION During the course of research on the beneficiation of the Big Seam iron ores of Birmingham, Ala., an urgent need was felt for quick iron assays of grab samples for mill control. Since the gangue minerals in these ores - quartz, limestone, and clay - all have about the same specific gravity, the use of a specific-gravity method was anticipated as a means of measuring the iron content. The idea of estimating the composition of a mineral mixture by measuring its specific gravity is by no means new. However, the usual method of carry in out this idea proved unreliable when applied to the Big Seam ores. The usual rapid method of determining specific gravity consists of measuring the volume of a known weight of sample that has been dried at high temperature. The inadequacy of this method led to the development of the rapid, modified, specific-gravity determination described in this paper.This work- was an incidental development resulting from research on beneficiation of iron ores by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama and ore producing companies of the Birmingham district."

"Introduction.The Bureau of Mines has taken up the problem of determining a method or methods whereby underground compensation insurance rates for metal-mining companies can be equalized in proportion to the underground hazards involved. This study has been started by the writer with the assistance of Mr. I. M. Wolfin* as consultant.The present paper briefly reviews the origin of accident compensation, gives a digest of State compensation laws, and describes types of insurance carriers. This will be followed by study of the basis of premium rate, risk differentials, and cost of compensation insurance to mine operators. These data will be supplemented by an analysis of the accident hazards in different mining methods and practices, and the severity and frequency of accidents classified by time lost and period of exposure to hazard, for different States, mining methods, occupations and nationalities. Attention will be given to standardized preventives for underground accidents in metal mines, and, finally, the classification of underground metal-mining hazard for workmen's compensation insurance premium rating."

As part of the continuing effort by the Bureau of Mines to promote mine safety, research work is being conducted at the Experimental coal mine, Bruceton, Pa., on the prevention of coal-mine explosions and on other mine-safety problems. The principal subjects studied during the past 2 years are briefly described in this paper. Although at present these problems are relevant particularly to the mine layout and to high-speed mining practices in numerous American coal mines, it is hoped that the findings will prove interesting and useful also to our European research colleagues. Some of the investigations treated here will be presented in greater detail in forthcoming Bureau of Mines reports. 1. UNDERGROUND STORAGE OF COAL CUTTINGS The seams in mist American bituminous-coal mines are undercut, shear-cut, or top-cut before blasting. The cuttings arc generally loaded out with the balance of the coal. However, in some mines it is not economical to load and remove cuttings from the mine. This applies especially if the cut section of the seam is of appreciably lower grade than the rest of the coal, or if the cut is made partly into an adjacent stratum that is high in incombustible content. In such mines the cuttings are sometimes stored in random heaps in rooms or other areas, along the ribs of mine entries, or in layers on the floor of rooms or entries.

"Freshly ground and aged anthracite and bituminous coal samples were investigated by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy to detect the presence, concentration and reactivity of free radicals. Freshly ground anthracite coal produced greater concentration of free radicals than the bituminous coal, and the radical reactivity was also greater for the anthracite. The reactivity of the newly produced free radicals in the anthracite dust correlated with the dust's toxicity. Furthermore similar coal-based free radicals were detected in the lung tissue of autopsied coal miners, suggestive of persistent reactivity by the embedded coal dust leading to the progressive disease process. Results of the studies on the severity of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) and free radical concentration m lung tissue support this hypothesis.INTRODUCTIONCOAL WORKERS' PNEUMOCONIOSIS (CWP) has been an important topic of concern to miners, mining engineers, epidemiologists and medical researchers for decades. It is well known that the prevalence and severity of CWP differ markedly between different regions and mines despite comparable exposures to respirable dust (REISNER and RoBOCK, 1977; HURLEY et al., 1979). These variations in pathogenicity of coal mine dusts can only partially be explained by differences in the mineral composition and by rank of coal (CHRISTIAN and NELSON, 1978; CHRISTIAN et al., 1979; HATCH et al., 1980). Cytotoxity studies on mammalian cells do not correspond well with the human disease pattern (CHRISTIAN and NELSON, 1978; CHRISTIAN et al., 1979; HATCH et al.,1980; VALL YA THAN et al., 1988). For example, while epidemiological studies of coal miners (REISNER and ROBECK, 1977; HURLEY et al., 1979) indicate that the prevalence of CWP correlates roughly with the rank of coal, such correlation has not yet been established in biological studies, despite considerable effort (CHRISTIAN and NELSON, 1978; CHRISTIAN et al., 1979; HATCH et al., 1980). In order to help resolve this apparent paradox we have undertaken a systematic study to evaluate whether any correlation exists between the concentration of free radicals present in fresh or aged coal dusts from two well-characterized U.S. coals. This study was also prompted in part by observations reported in the literature that organic free radicals can be formed on the surface of freshly fractured coals (LEBEDEV et al., 1978; DULIBA and CLARKSON, 1984). In particular, ARTEMOV and REZNIK (1980) noted that the decay lifetimes and, hence, the reactivity of the organic free radicals formed on crushing Russian coals, .depended"

(B) Selected injury data: 1. Tables 19 to 45: Contain current data on various selected factors of operating and physical conditions that have contributed to the occurrence of injuries at bituminous-coal mines and at Pennsylvania anthracite mines. These factors include extent of hand and machine loading, size of mine by employment and production groups, thickness of bed or vein, duration and number of work shifts, rating of mine as gassy, or nongassy, types of cap lamps, ventilation, explosives, and combinations of factors that influence mine safety. (C) Injury experience by States: 1. Tables 46 to 52: Contain current data on number of injuries, frequency and severity rates, average severity, major classification of injuries, injury records of all coal-producing States, and the relative standing by States according to injury-frequency rates. The Bureau of Mines is responsible for a broad spectrum of programs for meeting the diverse and changing mineral resource needs of the Nation. These programs are managed by the Director and two Deputy Directors, who formulate general policy and program direction from the Washington, D.C., headquarters. Bureau program activities are classified into two major functions, minerals research and minerals information and analysis. A senior advisory staff, consisting of the Chief Staff Officer and Chief Scientist, provides advice and consultation to the Director on a wide range of scientific and technical matters and acts on behalf of the Director to maintain liaison with other government agencies, both foreign and domestic, mineral industries, and professional societies. The Minerals Research Directorate Technological research and development in minerals have long been cornerstones of the Bureau of Mines. The Minerals Research Directorate performs this work. Re-search functions cover the extraction, processing, use, reuse, and disposal of mineral materials; the reduction of health and safety hazards in mining and processing; and minimizing undesirable environmental effects. The production, conservation, sale, and distribution of helium is also conducted under the Research Directorate.

Certain types of mobile surface mining equipment are required to be equipped with rollover protective structures (ROPS) capable of protecting the operator in case of a rollover accident. The Bureau of Mines has developed ROPS performance criteria for wheeled front-end loaders. This report reviews the development of rollover test procedures and subsequent testing of ROPS for 52,000-, 286,000-, and 390,000-lb gross vehicle weight (GVW) loaders. The program consisted of both dynamic (roll) and static tests to assist in the development of the ROPS performance criteria. Each test included extensive instrumentation and photographic documentation to fully evaluate the performance of the ROPS. Data summarizing side, longitudinal, and vertical force and deflections are included. The data indicate that for loaders in excess of 240,000 lb, GVW, a side force-to-mass ratio of 1.0 and an energy-to-mass ratio of 6.0 appear to be adequate criteria to protect an operator in the event of a 5400 rollover. For smaller machines, Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) 11040 performance criteria provide adequate protection. Longitudinal loading, though not ad-dressed in previous ROPS performance criteria, was shown to be a potentially significant factor in ROPS failure. Longitudinal loading and energy criteria equal to 80 pct of side loading criteria are recommended.

This Bureau of Mines report describes methods to electrodeposit erosion-resistant titanium diboride coatings from molten alkali metal borate baths at 900° C. These coatings have been shown to be highly resistant to material loss during impingement with high-velocity alumina and silicon carbide powders, and they show promise as protective coatings to reduce metal loss in erosive chemical environments, such as coal gasification systems. The most erosion-resistant coatings were prepared on nickel, Inconel, and molybdenum from an electrolyte containing LiBO2, NaBO2, Na2Ti03, and TiO2. The best coatings were deposited at current densities of [~]20 ma/cm2, using titanium or titanium diboride anodes. Erosion-resistant coatings were shown to exhibit (1) a high degree of crystallographic orientation along the (100) or (110) planes, (2) a chromium impurity level of less than 3 pct, and (3) a uniform, smooth, consolidated surface appearance when viewed under a microscope or by scanning electron microscopy. Optical spectroscopic studies of the molten electrolyte suggest that the lower valent (+3) titanium ion predominates in the baths.

Longwall mining of thin shallow coal seams utilizing open pits is technically feasible. The thinnest coal seam which can be mined using available technology is 34 inches. The capital expenditure for a 1,000,000 ton per year operation is $15,494,000, and the projected rate of return is 5 percent. Similar statistics for a conventional area surface mine are S18,937,000 capital and 14 percent rate of return. The longwall surface mining method disturbs 63 acres of land per 1,000,000 tons, and the conventional area surface mine disturbs 198 acres A significant bibliography of the technology involved is included.

The work described in this report is part of a Bureau of Mines research program for obtaining heats of formation of inorganic oxides, carbides, and nitrides by combustion calorimetry. The heats of combustion of molybdenum subnitride (Mo2N) and chromium subnitride (Cr2N) were measured. The data were combined with previous determinations of the heats of formation of molybdenum trioxide and chromium sesquioxide to obtain the heats of formation of the two subnitrides from the elements at 298.15° K. The corresponding free energies of formation were estimated. The heat data were compared with those of nine previously studied nitrides.

Between 1985-1986, the Bureau of Mines reviewed the mining history and minerals information for areas in and near the San Isabel National Forest to appraise the mineral resources present and determine the types of deposits, and their location in the Forest, that could be mined economically if sufficient demand and metal prices existed. The two major metallic deposit-types that are of national mineral resource significance within the Forest are stockwork- molybdenum (with tungsten and tin) and carbonate-replacement zinc-lead-silver deposits. Historically, small gold placers, gold-quartz veins, silver-quartz veins, skarn iron and copper deposits, volcanogenic copper-zinc-precious metal deposits, and base- and precious-metal veins have been mined. Barite, carbonate rocks, gypsum, other non-metallic deposits, and pegmatites, have also been mined. Sand and gravel, present in large volumes, occurs along and has been mined outside the Forest along the upper Arkansas River valley. Turquoise and gemstones are present in small amounts and are of interest to collectors and jewelers. Geologically, sediment-hosted uranium and copper are present in small occurrences but no resources have been identified. Geothermal resources are related to the Rio Grande rift which parallels the central part of the Forest. Four hot spring areas are present - two of these are within the Forest. Because of the low power requirements of the region, and the presence of other generating facilities, these geothermal resources have had only limited local use. Evaluation of mine models that may be found in the region show that base-metal deposits require a high precious-metal component to be economic. Although molybdenum can be produced at economically competitive prices, there is little demand for the product. Capital costs to start new molybdenum mines would be very high and it is not likely that new mines will be put into production in the near future.
