"The recovery or partial recovery of the oil remaining in oil sands after the usual methods of production have become unprofitable is perhaps the greatest problem in the petroleum industry today. The amount of this oil remaining in the sand is variously estimated by those familiar with the subject to be 25 to 90 per cent of the original content.2Lewis3 states, ""The estimate of 80 to 90 per cent of the oil left underground does not seem incredible.""It is estimated by the writer that approximately 91 per cent of the oil originally held in the Elliott pool, was still in the formation on January 1, 1924, and that it would take at least 12 years, at the 1923 rate of production, to further reduce this quantity by one per cent of the original content.The progress made in the oil industry during the past few years relative to the prevention of evaporation losses; to improvement in cracking processes, whereby the gasoline yield from many crudes has been doubled and trebled; to the increased recovery of gasoline from natural gas; and many other developments, remarkable as they are, can be applied only to that comparatively small portion of petroleum products which are raised to the surface. A device or process which would cut development costs to one-half would probably result in a much smaller profit to the oil industry, than the profit derived from an additional 10 per cent recovery of the total amount of oil in a pool. Various methods have been used and many others proposed, for the increase of oil recovery from normally depleted sands.In France, oil sands are being mined by means of shafts and galleries. In other places, notably the Bradford, Pennsylvania field, the yield has been increased by means of water flooding, wherein water is introduced into the sand to displace oil, and drive it to producing wells."

"The potential health effects of quartz-bearing airborne dust in mine and mill atmospheres point to the need for the quantification of quartz content in the source material for determining the source-sink relationships and for choosing applicable control measures. While a standard method exists from a regulatory point of view for the sampling of coal mine atmospheres for determining (i) respirable dust concentrations and (ii) the amount of quartz in the samples, there is no generally accepted standard method for quartz analysis in bulk samples of coal and host rocks. Generally, the bulk sample is reduced to a powder for producing quartz analysis samples. Extensive controls arc necessary to ensure representativeness of the analysis samples when these are very minute fractions of the bulk samples. Since the amount of analysis sample is not limited, alternative methods for quartz analysis may also be tried. It is, however, necessary to adopt a procedure which will satisfy several statistical requirements to guarantee representativeness of the quartz analysis samples.In this paper, the important factors in the preparation of quartz analysis samples from the host rocks and bulk samples are discussed. The method developed to prepare the analysis samples is outlined. The results of application of the procedures are presented. The procedure developed for quartz analysis sample preparation is based on sound statistical foundations. The procedure has been validated for reproducibility and homogeneity.The current methods used for quartz analysis in powders are the P-7 infrared spectrometry and quantitative X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Both have similar restrictions concerning the sample characteristics and operational problems, which arc intrinsic to radiation beams, device geometry, mechanics and controls of the radiation behavior. Although improvements can be made in the spectrometers and diffractometers, some of the most important steps are the procedures for analysis sample preparation from bulk samples and for calibration of the instruments. The sample preparation process is often referred to as one of grinding and sizing the bulk sample to generate the powder for the scanning devices. The particle sizes are referred to and their influence emphasized but the representativeness of the sample is assumed. Assuring sample representativeness during the sample preparation procedures is critical.For the sampling of airborne respirable dust in coal mines, the collection devices, the collection procedures and the analysis procedures are defined. This is not true for bulk samples where weights must be reduced thousands of times to generate the analysis samples for the scanning devices. The specifications to be developed may include bulk sample amount, sample reduction procedures, sample particle size distribution and sample amounts. However, the common problem of insufficient sample amount which is often encountered with mine airborne dust samples need not exist for bulk samples. Further, the same bulk sample can yield analysis samples for several experiments. The latter, of course, requires sample homogeneity.Three concepts are important in the selection of any procedure for sample preparation and analysis. These arc accuracy, reproducibility and representativeness. The adopted procedure has to guarantee a homogeneous sample representative of the population, a defined level of accuracy and reproducibility. Important statistical concepts are embedded in these requirements, particularly with respect to estimation and dispersion errors. Accuracy and reproducibility are totally different though not independent concepts. Estimation is related to accuracy and the true value. Dispersion is related to reproducibility and is measured by the classical statistical standard deviation of the distribution of a series of measurements or analysis performed over the same lot or analysis sample. This information circular is one of a series the Bureau of Mines plans to publish describing the methods and costs of mining uranium on the Colorado Plateau. The Big Buck mine is one of the larger underground uranium-vanadium ore mines on the plateau. The mine is about 39 miles southeast of Moab in the Big Indian mining district, San Juan County, Utah. The Big Buck claims were located late in 1947, when uranium mineralization was discovered in the Cutler formation at its outcrop along the escarpment that forms the west side of Big Indian Wash. Charles A. Steen made the first major discovery of uranium ore in the Chinle formation in the Big Indian mining district on July 6, 1952, when 14 feet of high-grade uranium ore was encountered in a diamond-drill hole drilled on his Mi Vida claim. The Big Buck ore body now being mined by Standard Uranium Corp. is a southeast extension of Steen's original discovery.

As part of an effort to establish the extent of the domestic chromium supply that could be exploited in case of adverse changes in international chromium production and trading patterns, a two-part study was conducted for the Bureau of Mines, to assess the domestic availability of critical metals in scrap containing significant amounts of chromium. This report describes the part of the study that deals with wrought stainless steels and heat-resisting alloys. Data were collected on types of scrap, sources, quantities, and ultimate disposition, leading to the conclusion that In 1917 about 62,000 tons of contained chromium was unrecycled. Unrecovered obsolete stainless steel scrap accounts for most of these uncollected chromium values. Error margins in the amount of uncollected scrap are estimated to be 10 to 20 percent.

This Bureau of Mines report presents the results of a study conducted to assess the domestic availability of chromium from superalloy and cast heat- and corrosion-resistant alloy scrap material. Six alloy classes included in this survey were investment cast, hardfacing, and wrought nickel- and cobalt-base alloys, wrought nickel-iron-base alloys, and heat- and corrosion-resistant alloy castings. Data were collected for 1976 on metallic scrap generation, use patterns, and production practices for these alloy producing and using industries. A model was developed that allowed an assessment of the materials flow circuits within the industries that produce these alloys. The types, amounts, sources, secondary products, and ultimate destinations of chromium- containing metallic scrap for the six alloy classes were determined. Regarding the overall recycling efficiency of these alloy producing and using industries, of the 580.9 million pounds of scrap generated from these six alloy classes in 1976, about 72 percent (416.8 million pounds) was remelted by the same alloy-producing industries, about 18 percent (104.9 million pounds) was downgraded into stainless and low-alloy steels, about 3 percent (19.7 million pounds) was exported, and about 7 percent (39.5 million pounds) was lost through landfill or other disposal or service wastage. The lost material is primarily contaminated oxides for which recovery is currently uneconomic. However, the 124.6 million pounds of scrap material downgraded or exported in 197b contained potentially recoverable critical strategic elements. The amount of scrap material lost to the six alloy-producing industries in this manner contained 22.1 million pounds of chromium, 53.4 million pounds of nickel, 5.9 million pounds of cobalt, 35.9 million pounds of iron, and 7.3 million pounds of other alloying elements.

In 1900, as far as available records show, there were only two producer-gas power installations in the United States. In June, 1915, the number probably exceeded 1,000. Of this number, some 84.5 per cent comprised small plants using anthracite, and only about 15 per cent of the total number utilized bituminous coal and lignite. In addition to these, two plants used wood, and three or four used oil. In the main, however, the larger sized units are operating on bituminous coal and lignite. During the early years of these plants little success was anticipated from the use of bituminous coals and lignites, but in 1904 and 1905 it was fully demonstrated at the Government testing station at St. Louis that these fuels could be utilized to excellent advantage. However, although many producer-gas plants in daily operation are using bituminous coal and lignite, many power-plant men are still skeptical regarding the successful commercial use of these fuels.

Investigation of an extensive deposit of chromite-bearing actinolite-talc schist situated on the summit of Casper Mountain, 10 miles south of Casper, Wyo., was one of the first projects Undertaken by the Bureau of Mines under the Strategic Materials Act (Public 117, 76th Cong., Ch. 190, 1st sess.), for which an appropriation became available August 9, 1939. During the previous summer; the Geological Survey? made? a magnetometrical survey of the area in which the schist occurred. It was exposed in several small lenses and two larger ones aggregating about 19?acres in area. Although the occurrence of chromite here had been known for many years, the only work done on the deposit was the digging of? a few shallow pits on some of the more promising outcrops. From August 23 to December 3, 1939, the Bureau of Mines investigated the larger of the two main schist bodies. Twenty-four trenches having a total length of 8,073 feet were dug across the deposit, and its subsurface extension was explored by 3,623 feet of diamond drilling. Over 32 tons of samples were shipped to the Metallurgical Division of the Bureau of Mines at Reno, Nev., for reduction, analysis, and ore testing. In all, there were 853 individual samples. Geological maps, based upon examination of outcrops, trenches, and drill cores, as well as a contour map of the area were made by the Geological Survey.

"The interaction of amorphous 1ilica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O, C2H5OH, C7H2NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy. It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction or surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C7H2NO > C2H5OH > H2O. Index Headings: Silica; Surface vibrational modes; Photoacoustic spectroscopy; Hydrogen bonding agents.INTRODUCTIONThe use of m spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature.1 2 For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1• Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-5 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity, 7- 9 catalysis, 10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8NO), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by m spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples11 have used transmission m spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties. In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18•19 Moreover, according to a recent paper, 20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry. In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H50H, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface m modes. Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents. Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16•17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's), once universally accepted as ideal compounds for use in cooling and refrigeration, in foam production, and in cleaning electronic components, are being phased out and eventually banned under extensive international agreements because the chlorine in CFC's is thought to deplete the Earth's ozone layer. The industry has responded with the introduction of alternatives in the form of hydrofluorocarbons (HFC's), which contain no chlorine, and with hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC's), which fill an intermediate gap in the replacement of CFC's. As a result of the elimination of chlorine in the HFC's and the reduction of it in the HCFC's, these alternatives contain more fluorine than the CFC's do. Other nonfluorocarbon substitutes, known as not-in-kind alternatives, contain no fluorine at all. As a result, the fluorspar mining industry, which is the source of fluorine in fluorocarbons through intermediate hydrofluoric acid, is being affected. Concern for this impact has led the U.S. Bureau of Mines to employ its capabilities to analyze various scenarios in the evolution of CFC replacements and substitutes to determine their effect on fluorspar mining. This report utilizes a network flow model to examine the effects of proposed replacements for CFC's, in terms of fluorine content, on fluorspar operations worldwide and on hydrofluoric acid plants in North America and Europe.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory studies on Idaho mudstones to examine techniques for extracting vanadium. Recovery of vanadium from low-grade sources could contribute to future vanadium production and reduce reliance on imports. An Idaho mudstone surface sample containing 0.30 pct V205 and an underground sample containing 0.21 pct V205 were used in the extraction tests. Leaching of the surface sample for 18 h at 800 C with the addition of up to 1,000 lb/ton H2S04 recovered 70 pct of the vanadium. How-ever, leaching of the underground sample under the same conditions re-covered only 47 pct. By adding 15 wt pct NaCl and roasting the samples at 7500 C for 2 h, followed by leaching with 800 lb/ton H2S04, vanadium extractions were increased to 78 pct from the surface sample and 83 pct from the underground sample. Water leaching of samples roasted at 7500 C for 4 h with a 25-wt-pct NaCI addition yielded about 60 pct of the vanadium from both surface and underground samples. Autoclave leaching at 2000 C for 3 h with 1,000 Ib/ton H2S04 extracted 97 pct of the vanadium from the surface sample and 86 pct from the underground sample. An exploratory solvent extraction investigation to purify and concentrate vanadium in the leach solution using several organic reagents was also conducted.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Coouncil (CRC) 4/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 5/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941. 5/ reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. 5/The present report presents analytical data for samples, representing the products of approximately 100 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were obtained during December 1)55 and January 194o. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows:Regular-price, 1,958 samples, 317 items, and 96 brands; premium-price, 1, samples, 292 items, and 85 brands; third-grade, 58 samples, 22 items, and 14 brands. "Boiling respirable quartz dust in water for 10 to 40 minutes decreases the cytotoxicity for both erythrocyte hemolytic potential and pulmonary macrophage release of lactate dehydrogenase in vitro. The potential is reduced to near zero in the boiling concentration range of 1 to 10 mg quartz per ml water in boiling times of 20 to 40 minutes. Below this range the detoxification occurs over a longer boiling time. Above this range the hemolytic potential remaining after 40 minutes of boiling approaches native quartz potential with increasing concentration up to 30 mg quartz per ml water. Replacing the media with fresh at the midpoint of boiling results in full detoxification through 20 mg per ml. Pre—boiling the medium with quartz or silica gel reduces the effect of subsequently boiling test samples. Detoxification persists after mild drying at 110 C for 8 hours, and persists after three days of resuspension in water at room temperature. Additional data on persistence of the effect, on the use of acidic and basic media treatment, and on surface analyses are presented, with a discussion of a working hypothesis and research needs.IntroductionResearch underway to determine interactions of quarts and other mineral dust surfaces with pulmonary fluids and alveolar macrophages in culture led to the observation that when dusts were autoclaved in aqueous suspension, their cytotoxic effects on macrophages wore suppressed, in some cases fully and even after several days incubation with the cells. This finding was in direct contradiction to earlier results from both short term macrophage lysosaal enzyme release assays, as well as longer term cytotoxicity assays from macrophages in culture; in those studies, dusts were steam autoclaved at 121 121 ºC with no liquid water but with steam present. (1,2) However detoxification under boiling conditions has been reported in other research.(3). It was decided to use the hemolysis assay to further investigate these findings, because of its sensitivity, simplicity and cost."

The Government of the United States annually expends approximately $8,000,000 for coal. Prior to 1906, this coal was purchased mainly on its reputation, or trade name, rather than under contracts specifying the heating value of the coal, its contents of ash and moisture, and other characteristics. In recent years the Government and other large consumers have appreciated more and more the desirability of definitely determining by chemical analyses and tests the character and quality of coal deliveries. Studies of engineroom and boiler-room efficiencies and economies point forcibly to the necessity of devoting more thought to the improvement of the boiler-room end. This calls for an intimate knowledge of the character and quality of the fuel used. The analyses and tests of delivered coal furnish such data, whereby the power-plant results can be comprehensively studied and a continuous check maintained on the coal and on the conditions of plant operation. Under authority of acts of Congress making appropriations for analyzing and testing fuels belonging to or for the use of the United States Government, a laboratory is maintained at the headquarters of the Bureau of Mines, 'Washington, D. C., where samples representing deliveries of coal purchased for Government use are analyzed and tested. The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal by the Government under specifications,a that is, by contracts that make definite requirements regarding the heating value of the coal expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analysis. Under many of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal offered, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled and analyzed to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor, and if it is not, the price to be paid is decreased in proportion; but if the coal is of higher quality, the price is proportionately increased. The analyses of coals or the guaranties offered by the bidders may in some cases be used for determining the award of a contract, but if the coals offered are of widely different characteristics, it may be difficult to determine which would prove the cheapest fuel, without having their relative evaporative efficiencies. Hence, it may be necessary to conduct evaporative tests under service conditions in order to determine which coal is particularly adapted for successful and economical use in the plant. But once a particular coal is selected, regardless of the procedure of determining the award of a contract, then the greatest advantage of the specification method is realized, in that it guarantees to the purchaser coal of uniform character and quality, thereby insuring the best results in the plant. The cost of purchases, under such specifications, of fueL for the use of the Government now aggregates approximately $4,100,000 per annum, and the cost of additional fuel for which samples are taken and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for analysis in order to determine the character and quality of the coal furnished aggregates some $3,000,000 per annum more. In fact, information is now obtained regarding the quality of fuel purchased on almost all contracts large enough to warrant sampling and analysis and heatingvalue tests. It may be said that the purchase of coal under specification is still in the stage of evolution and development, and that experience and time will be required to develop fully standard specifications and methods of sampling and analysis that may be used universally. The success of the specification method for the purchase of coal and the reliability of analysis now rests almost entirely on sampling.a Improper sampling leads to controversies, with resulting condemnation of the specification method in general and the value of laboratory analyses and tests in particular. A number of bulletins b have been published showing the results of the purchase of coal by the Government under specifications. This bulletin is a compilation of the results of coal analyses by the Government, including those made in the fiscal years 1908-1910, which have been previously published, and later analyses representing coals analyzed during the fiscal years 1911-1915. The preceding bulletins gave individual analyses or average monthly analyses, whereas this bulletin gives the average analyses only for the entire contract. It is hoped that this compilation of a series of comparable analyses of the coals purchased by the Government will be of value alike to coal dealers, to Government engineers, to purchasing agents, and to all users of coal.

This volume contains a summary of the results of past analyses on U.S. Bureau of Mines Contract No. H0122061 which are relevant to electromagnetic location in mine rescue situations. The analytical results indicated that detection of a trapped miner equipped with a special transmitter is feasible in most situations. Location of the miner by surface measurements is also generally feasible within certain errors. The feasibility of miner detection and the accuracy of miner location have been examined theoretically for a wide variety of situations. Agreement with experimental results is generally good in cases where measurements are available.

Offgrade chromite concentrate, with a Cr-Fe ratio of 1.3 to 1.4 has been successfully smelted to produce useful ferroalloys. The Cr-Fe ratio is not improved, but the alloys can be used without a too drastic change in normal steel-mill practice. The ordinary high-carbon ferrochrome has been successfully produced by smelting under highly acid smelting conditions. An alloy containing 50 percent chromium was produced at a power consumption of 4,490 kw.-hr. per ton of alloy. Alloys containing 20 percent silicon were made by direct smelting chromite concentrate and silica.

The Appalachian Ores Co., Sweetsprings, W. Va. was a small but persistent producer of manganese ore for several years prior to 1942. Most of the ore mined was hard, nodular psilomelane, with some pyrolusite and, wad, occurring in clay. The Bureau of Mines started an investigation of the area in January 1942 and completed the work in May 1942. Twenty-four churn-drill holes were bored, aggregating 2,084 feet. A total of 420 feet of test pits was sunk on selected drill holes to check the churn-drill sampling. Twelve drifts and crosscuts aggregating 139 feet were driven from the bottom of test pits to investigate concentrations of manganese nodules. Three hundred sixty-six churn-drill samples and 102 other samples were sent to Bureau laboratories for analyses. Beneficiation tests were conducted in the Burp.au of Mines laboratory in Rolla, Mo. Results of testing 10 samples indicated that approximately 80 percent of the material in crude ore could be discarded by log washing. Gravity tests indicated 'that 55 percent of the total manganese in the crude ore was recoverable as a gravity concentrate averaging 34.6 percent manganese.

Reports technical progress in designing four machines to be used in mining coal underground, applying innovative concepts at the design stage (instead of add-ons). A study phase was followed by design activity, including calculations supporting the designs. Scale models of three machines were built, and a full-scale mock-up of the conventional loader was used to measure human factors parameters.

"INTRODUCTION 'The investigation reported herein is part of a comprehensive research program being conducted by the Metal Mining Research Section, Mining Division, Bureau of Mines, on pressure problems in underground mines. This program was initiated in 1937 and for the first 3 years was concerned primarily with measurement of the pressure on mine pillars and supports and their strength. 4/ 5/ During this period, investigations were conducted in both the laboratory and the field in the comparatively shallow load and zinc mines of Missouri and Oklahoma. As a result a seismic method of determining the pressure on mine pillars was developed.Before this research program was initiated, Chas. F. Jackson, chief of the Mining Division, suggested that rock under pressure might give rise to noises inaudible to the unaided ear - that is, subaudible noises. As a result of this suggestion, listening tests were made concurrently with the routine pressure measurements to see if any rock noises were present; with one exception, it was found there were no rock noises in any of these shallow mines. At the same time, pressure measurements disclosed that, with one exception, pillars were not under pressure amounting to more than 10 percent of the crushing strength of the rock. The one exception was a pillar in the Big John mine of the Eagle Picher Mining & Smelting Co. in the Tri-State district, which showed some physical evidence of failure, such as small cracks and spalling; it was reported that the pillar had been heard to crack or snap at intervals. Listening tests in this pillar disclosed that subaudible noises of comparatively small intensity were present and occurred at 1- to 2-minute intervals, on the average. Unfortunately, owing to the shortness of this pillar it was impossible to make any pressure measurements."

Previous research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines has shown that autoclave cyanide leaching of used automobile exhaust catalysts for recovery of platinum-group metals (PGM) is technically feasible. The purpose of this work was to investigate the chemistry of the dissolution of PGM in cyanide solutions in more detail. Where possible, samples of pure, elemental PGM powders or foils were used instead of automobile exhaust catalysts, because of their greater purity. Ultraviolet spectra revealed that Pt and Pd were solubilized as the square planar tetracyanometallate (II) complexes, while Rh was solubilized as the octahedral hexacyanorhodate (III) complex. This explained the poor recovery of Rh from solution by carbon adsorption, solvent extraction, and ion exchange observed in earlier research, because of the higher anionic charge and size of the octahedral complex. Leaching rate studies showed that the rate of solubilization was greatest for Pd, followed by Pt and Rh. Although the rate of chemical reaction was the controlling step for the dissolution of elemental Pt and Rh samples, the rate of pore diffusion was rate limiting for PGM in catalyst samples.

"SUMMARYA preliminary examination of the Buena Vista iron deposit was made in June 1942 by Paul E. Pesonen, mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines. Subsequent examinations were made by D. W. Butner, of the Bureau, in March 1943, and by the author in July 1944, who recommended exploration by diamond drilling, trenching, and sampling. Work on the project was done during the period March 28 to May 26, 1945.Property holdings, comprising 16 claims known as the Buena Vista group, are situated in sec. 4, T. 24 N., R. 34 E., Mount Diablo base and meridian, north Churchill County, about 37 miles east of Lovelock, Nev.Three diamond-drill holes totaling 575 feet were drilled; 45 small pits and ten trenches, totaling 435 linear feet, were excavated, and 84 channel samples totaling 862 feet were obtained under supervision of the Bureau.Purpose of the project was to determine the possible downward extension of the mineralized sections exposed in the outcrops and to determine grade of the ore.Bureau work was confined to one claim only - the Iron Mountain."
