Although wheelchair users are regularly subjected to whole-body vibrations little research has been conducted to assess these vibrations or attempt to reduce them [2,3,5]. Most of the wheelchair and whole-body vibration research done to this point has been conducted on manual wheelchairs. Van Sickle et al showed that manual wheelchair propulsion over a simulated road course produces vibration loads that exceed the ISO 2631-1 standards for the fatigue-decreased proficiency boundary at the seat of the wheelchair as well as the head of the user [6]. In a study by Boninger et al [1], 66% of wheelchair users reported neck pain since acquiring their wheelchair. One of the key reasons believed to be the cause of pain, was the exposure to whole-body vibration. Kwarciak et al [4] and Wolf et al [7] performed similar studies using two methods of analysis to evaluate vibrations on suspension and non-suspension wheelchairs while descending curbs of varying heights. Both studies revealed no significant difference in the abilities of the wheelchairs to reduce the amounts of vibrations transferred to the wheelchair user. Although the efforts of wheelchair companies to reduce the amounts of whole-body vibration transmitted to wheelchair users through the addition of suspension systems is encouraging, the technology is not yet ideal. Additionally, the research to date has focused on manual wheelchairs exclusively, while little attention has been shown to powered wheelchairs. Methods This study includes the use of two suspension electric powered wheelchairs: The Quickie S-626 and the Invacare 3G Torque SP Storm Series. Each subject tested all of the configurations of the suspension wheelchairs. These included the Invacare with suspension, the Quickie with suspension set to three settings (most stiff, least stiff, and 50% stiffness), and both wheelchairs with solid inserts to act as non-suspension wheelchairs. Sixteen able bodied subjects have been recruited for this study so far. In each of the configurations of the wheelchairs, the subjects traversed an Activities of Daily Living (ADL) course. Vibrations were collected from a tri-axial accelerometer attached to a seat plate beneath the cushion during driving over the activities course. A mixed model ANOVA was used to determine if there were differences between suspensions based on Vibration Dose Value (VDV). Results Statistical analyses of the VDV data revealed significant differences between the six different suspensions over each of the obstacles in the activities of daily living course. Post-hoc analyses revealed that for each of the obstacles, significant differences existed between the Invacare suspension and the Invacare solid insert. For the Quickie power wheelchair the solid insert setting was not significantly different from the most-stiff setting for each of the obstacles

The London Metal Exchange began its first official session of aluminum trading on Monday, October 2, LME prices based on 3-month forward contracts opened Monday at 52.4 cents per pound, fell midway through the week to 52.3 cents and ended Friday at a high of 52.7 cents. For the week, LME metal averaged 52.5 cents. Although Reynolds Metals Co. and Aluminum Co. of American continued in September to value unalloyed 99.5 percent aluminum ingot at 53 cents per pound, other producers were at higher positions of 55-57 cents. Alcan Aluminum Corp. of Alcan Aluminum, Ltd., a Canadian producer, increased prices for its U.S.-marketed ingot by 2 cents to 55 cents per pound, effective September 21. New York merchants increased ingot quotes by approximately 0.5 cents to 52.8-53.5 cents per pound.

Manipulation of hand-held objects in 3D space is a complex task. Understanding how individual digits interact with a hand-held object provides helpful information for hand tool designers, researchers, clinicians, and occupational therapists. At the object-digit interface, the contact mechanics can be represented by three force and three torque components. Six-component force/torque transducers can register all the three forces and three torques at the digit-object interface, and therefore are advantageous in the study of manipulation mechanics. The large number of force and torque signals from multiple force/torque transducers are difficult to interpret and therefore making experimental research of manipulation a challenging task. The purpose of this study was to develop a 3D visualization tool for the investigation of the contact mechanics at the object-digit interfaces during manipulation tasks. Methods A 3D stick-figure hand model was created based on digitized 23 anatomical landmarks of the hand. Five miniature 6-component force/torque transducers (4 × Nano17 for the fingers, 1 × Mini40 for the thumb, ATI Industrial Automation, NC) were used to record force and torque data at the tips of individual digits. Thirty channels of force/torque signals from the transducers were collected by a 16-bit analogue-digital converter (PCI-6031, National Instrument, Austin, TX) installed in a computer. The transducers were mounted on a custom-made rectangular aluminum handle for object manipulation. Coordinate frames were established at each transducer, on the handle, and at the base of the MicroScribe digitizer. To visualize the force vectors at the digit-tips, the coordinates of the hand landmarks in the MicroScribe coordinate frame and the force vectors in local transducer coordinate frames were transformed to a common coordinate frame defined on the handle. One healthy right-handed, male subject participated in the experimental study. During the tests, the participant sat in a chair by a testing table. The forearm was strapped to an arm holder in neutral rotation position. The instrumented handle was fixed on the testing table by a C-clamp through an adapting plate. With the hand of the subject gripped on the instrumental handle, the landmarks of the instrumented handle and the transducers, as well as the anatomical landmarks of the hand were digitized using the MicroScribe digitizer for the purpose of coordinate frame establishment and transformation as described above. The subject performed three different maximum isometric voluntary contraction tasks: (1) grasping, (2) rotating in pronation, and (3) lifting. Results The 3D hand model and representative force vector clusters in a single trial of grasping, rotating, and lifting tasks are shown in Figure 1. This report describes the development, installation and performance of a lonpwall illumination system. The longwall illumination system was installed at the Greenwich Collieries 112, Cockport, Pa. It utilized flourescent luminaires, intrinsically safe power distribution and is the first longwall system installed in Pennsylvania.

Mining men and State officials in their efforts to make mining safer are confronted from time to time with various complicated questions. In recent gears these questions have tended to increase with the use of mechanical appliances. Twenty-five years ago electricity had been used but little in mires; today there is practically no other means of transmitting power employed in American mines, except that in metal mines compressed air is used, chiefly for drilling and for operating small portable hoists. In coal mines there has been a great increase in mechanization, which tends to concentrate the work of production in small areas and to increase the local difficulties of ventilation; also, it has intensified locally the hazard from coal dust as well as firedamp in bituminous and subbituminous mines. The answers to the questions that arise are not always obvious, as is shown by the fact that even able, experienced men differ in their opinions of the best, way to overcome a particular mining hazard. The difficulty of .solving the problems is also demonstrated by the varying provisions in mine-safety rules, both in official regulations and in the rules of those mining companies that are endeavoring to do more than follow the letter of the law. Such differences of opinion as to the best way of meeting a difficult situation are often found within the same mining organization, and, similarly, varying opinions are held by different members of the Bureau of Mines staff.

The Smuggler is one of the mines in the Aspen district, located the central part of Pitkin County, Colo. It was first examined in July 1943 by C. R. Wilfloy, former mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City, Utah, in, company with the lessees, R. D. Rohlfing of Aspen and J. W. Vanderwilt of Denver. The purpose of this examination was to sample a mineralized breccia zone that appeared continuous along the contact between the Leadville and Weber formations. These preliminary samples showed that the zone contains low but significant amounts of lead and zinc and that the minerals are partly oxidized and thus not easily concentrated. The mine was examined again in May 1946 by the senior author and William Herron, one of the present lessees of the property. This examination reviewed the previous sampling and recommended investigations by the Bureau of Mines. Sampling and drilling investigations were conducted by the Bureau from October 1946 to February 1947 and again from August 1947 to April 1948. Aspen is the center of a famous mining district that produced over $102,000,000 in silver and lead ores from 1880 to 1918, when a dispute closed down the mines (fig. 1). All of the workings below the Cowenhoven tunnel in Smuggler Mountain and the lower Durant tunnel in Aspen Mountain have been flooded since that time. The Cowenhoven portal now is caved, and Smuggler Nos. 1 and 2 tunnels are the only accessible workings in Smuggler Mountain. The only operating mine is the Midnight, situated 4 miles south of town at an altitude of 9,700 feet.

A brief résumé follows of activities of the Division of Coal-Mine Inspection that have had a favorable effect on health, safety, and the reduction of injuries at coal mines: 1. The Federal Mine Safety Code fur Bituminous Coal and Lignite Mines of the United States was issued originally by the Director of the Bureau of Mines on July 24, 1946, after consulting with management and labor representatives of the coal-mining industry. The code has been used by Federal coal-mine inspectors while inspecting bituminous-coal and lignite mines as a basis for determining the existence of unhealthful and unsafe conditions and practices in these mines. A revised code was issued by the Secretary of the Interior on October 8, 1953, after further consultations with representatives of management and mine workers and was incorporated by reference in the 1952 and subsequent bituminous -coal wage agreements. The agreement of May 29, 1946, between the Secretary of the Interior, acting as Coal Mines Administrator under authority of Executive Order 9728, and the United Mine Workers of America, covering bituminous-coal and lignite mines in Government possession, charged Federal coal-mine inspectors with the responsibility of making periodic investigations of the mines and reportin; to the Coal Mines Administrator any violations of the Federal Minis Safety Code. Federal coal-mine inspectors also had temporary authority to close mines found to be imminently dangerous, but such authority under Executive Order 9728 was removed on June 30, 1947, when Government control of the mines was terminated.

Overall mineral industry productive activity in Europe increased in 1965, following general upward trends in gross national product and total industrial production4 recorded. The gross national product of non-Communist Europe in market prices in 1965 was estimated at $572 billion and that of Communist Europe at $409 billion. However, the extractive sectors of the mineral industries generally did not fare as well as the processing sectors. In fact, a number of countries recorded lower production levels in this sector in 1965 than in 1964 and most countries had a lower growth rate in extractive industry output than in overall industrial output. Among the non-Communist nations of Europe, a general decline in coal production and lower levels of iron ore output in France, West Germany, and Luxembourg contributed significantly to the smaller growth rates or declines in extractive indexes. Where higher indexes were registered, this generally resulted from the performance of the petroleum and natural gas industry; exceptions were Greece, Norway, and Sweden. The decline recorded for Czechoslovakia was attributable entirely to poorer performance by that nation's coal industry.

Coals may be divided into six classes-anthracite, semi anthracite, semibituminous, bituminous, subbituminous, and lignite. The first three cla~ can be distinguished by dHferences of composition, particularly the proportions of fixed carbon and the ratios of the fixed carbon to the volatile matter in the cools. The last three classes can be distinguished by di:fferences in physical character, chiefly in color and in manner of weathering. Lignite is brown, not black, and has generally a woody look, but it weathers in much the same way as subbituminous coals. On exposure to the air lignite slacks or crumbles. The lumps check and fall into small irregular pieces that exhibit a decided tendency to separate into extremely thin plates. Hence lignite deteriorates greatly during storage or long transportation. The most characteristic feature of the composition of lignite is a large percentage of moisture. '!his high moisture content reduces the fuel value of freshly mined lignite, and the partial evaporation of moisture, on expooure, causes th6 fuel to check and fall to pieces. Consequently, attempts to increase the efficiency of lignite as a fuel involve reducing its percentage of moisture and increasing its ability to endure storage and transportation. Both these results are accomplished by briquetting.

In the 1953 National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Contest, 58 teams from 9 States participated, 14 teams from 6 States in mine rescue and 47 teams from 9 States in first aid. Three of the teams were combination teams in that the same team participated in both the mine rescue and first-aid contests. The States represented and the number of teams from each State are shown in table 1. [ ] The contest was conducted in accordance with the general rules prepared by the Rules Committee and approved by the General Committee of the National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Committee.

Load-haul dump vehicles (LHDs) are used to move waste rock and ore in underground mining operations. The LHD is designed for bi-directional operation and the driver sits sideways to the direction of travel. LHD operators have higher reports of low back pain and neck discomfort than other mobile equipment operators who do not sit sideways in the vehicle, but are exposed to whole-body vibration (WBV)1. Exposure to WBV is linked with reports of lower-back pain, neck problems and spinal degeneration2,3. Static sitting postures, sitting with the neck and back twisted, and sitting with the back in an unsupported posture are also linked with an increased risk of developing back pain4. The objective of this study was to determine typical vibration exposure levels and driving postures for LHD operators. Methods Whole-body vibration exposure was measured at the seat-pan, in accordance with the ISO 2631-1 standard5, on seven LHD vehicles with a 10 yard bucket haulage capacity. Vibration data were recorded with a Biometrics™ DataLog II (P3X8) and stored on a 128 Mb Simpletech™ multimedia card. Comparisons were made to the ISO 2631-1 Health Guidance Caution Zone (HGCZ) in order to determine potential injury risk. Operator posture was monitored with three digital video cameras which were secured inside each operator’s cab to the top left corner, top right corner and back right corner. Reflective tape was placed on each driver’s shoulders, head, and back in several locations and in several locations on the vehicle seat in order to aid in posture coding. Posture coding was performed with 3DMatch v4.50 multiple video view analysis feature. Vibration measurement and posture recording occurred simultaneously for 60 minutes while the LHD operator performed typical duties. Results and Discussion Results indicate LHD operators may be exposed to whole-body vibration levels putting them at risk for injury (Table 1). According to ISO 2631-1 the frequency weighted acceleration values corresponding to the lower and upper limits of the HGCZ (for an 8 hr exposure duration) are 0.45 and 0.90 m/s2 respectively5. Six of the seven vehicles showed exposure levels within the HGCZ defined for 8 hours. Preliminary video analysis indicated LHD operators were exposed to potentially harmful levels of WBV while adopting asymmetric postures (Table 2). For example, one LHD operator (Figure 1) worked with his neck twisted greater than 40 degrees for 93 % of a 60 minute work cycle. According to the Swedish National Work Injury Criteria, neck rotation should be less than 15 degrees if the motion is required for greater than 80% of the work time6. Occupational exposures to whole-body vibration (WBV) at different frequency domains may differentially affect human comfort and the musculoskeletal system. Under this presumption, a frequency-based weighting scheme has been adapted in many widely accepted standards for WBV measurement. However, there is very little human data showing a direct link between WBV frequency and musculoskeletal disorders. We conducted an epidemiologic study to examine the association between WBV frequency and prevalence of low back pain (LBP) and to identify determinants of specific frequencies associated with LBP in urban taxi drivers. Methods The WBV frequency data were collected from 247 professional drivers (aged 44.6±8.3) who participated in an exposure validation study 1 of the Taxi Drivers’ Health Study (TDHS) in 2000. 2 In accordance with the ISO 2631-1 (1997) methods, we measured the frequency-weighted acceleration over drivers’ seat surface, under conditions representing randomly assigned destinations. We developed a WBV record-replay system at the Liberty Mutual Research Institute (LMRI) in Hopkinton, MA, USA. This system includes two tri-axial accelerometers (PCB Piezotronics, NY, USA), one RD-130T PCM data recorder (TEAC, Tokyo, Japan), and one LMWBV meter 2.0 (LMRI, MA, USA). Only the vertical axis of seat-surface WBV frequency was used in this study. To characterize the WBV frequency curve, we manually identified the presence of any peak within each of the following frequency range: <4, 4-10, 10-20, and >20 Hz. Information about the operating vehicles and driving environment was either collected from the vehicle registration record (manufacturer, year of make, transmission, engine size, etc.) or directly measured (wheel-base length, seat inclination, etc.). Structured interviews were conducted by an occupational physician to gather information on LBP that had led to medical attention or absence from driving in past year. We used multiple logistic regression to estimate the prevalence odds ratio (OR) associated with the presence of each index peak frequency, adjusting for age, body mass index, professional seniority, daily driving hours, seat inclination, and the intensity of predicted root-mean-square WBV exposure in m/sec2. For any revealed WBV frequency that was associated with LBP, we constructed a multiple logistic regression model to identify the personal and vehicle characteristics associated with the presence of WBV peak within the indicated frequency range.

West Virginia ranks second in the nation in coal production, surpassed only by Wyoming, and usually accounts for 15 to 20percent of the nation&apos;s total annual production. Cod occurs in seams of minable thickness in all but nine of the state&apos;s 55 counties. There are two coal- producing regions, the northern field and the southern field. West Virginia coal is mined by both underground and surface methods. Underground mines in West Virginia account for a major portion of its coal production. Surface mines are generally contour operations and, especially in the southern field, are in steep slope areas, with slopes greater than 20 degrees. Many of the surface mines remove multiple seams. Recoverable reserves in West Virginia total in excess of 55 billion tons of bituminous coal. West Virginia&apos;s regulatory program was conditionally approved on January 19, 198 1. Its Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved February 23,198 1, with emergency authority granted on August 26,1988.

The Bureau of Mines analyzed 626 crude oils from 546 oilfields in the United States that produced 2,500 BOPD or more during at least 1 of the last 3 years. Included also are crude oil analyses from eight fields that produced less but which were located in areas having few or no fields that produced 2,500 BOPD. The tables show the geographical and geological source, general characteristics. and determined and computed analytical data for each sample. The analyses were made according to the Bureau of Mines routine method and are directly comparable to other previously published analyses.

"INTRODUCTION The United States production of tin has always been negligible, and domestic requirements have been met almost entirely by imports. The advent of war in Europe in 1939 brought a threat to our foreign source of supply, and steps were taken by Congress to forestall shortages of tin and other metals. By authority of the Strategic Minerals Act, passed by Congress in 1939, the Bureau of Mines and Geological Survey conducted investigations of domestic tin deposits.An examination of Alaska deposits was undertaken in 1940 and 1941 by J. B. Mertie, Jr., and Robert R. Coats of the Geological Survey.H. B. Heide conducted a preliminary examination of lode and placer-tin deposits at Cape Mountain in 1942, which was followed in 1943 and 1944 by a program of exploration by churn drilling in the placer area and trenching and sampling the lode deposits.Placer tin, found at the head of Goodwin Gulch, Cape Creek, First Chance Creek, and Boulder Creek, indicates that the mineral was derived from the vicinity of lode cassiterite occurrences on Cape Mountain. Placer tin led to the discovery of at least one, cassiterite vein by the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines."
