The following is a case study of how LuckStone Corporation improved their blast monitoring and documentation program. A number of resources already at their disposal have been utilized to improve the body of data collected from each blast. The tools being used include GPS, aerial photos, and a user-friendly push button format excel spreadsheet. The data collected include product by product records of materials used, distances to all concerned neighbors, seismograph data, etc: The spreadsheet has been designed to perform an ongoing analysis of blasting trends. The program has been carried out at a corporate level and is in use by blasters at each location. This paper addresses the advantages and drawbacks of this program. It also addresses the ways in which the various tools were integrated, Discussed as well is the need for simplicity when bringing “new” technology to the field and the steps taken in familiarizing the end user to changes.

The Brazilian Regulation NBR 9653 is a guide intended to evaluate mine and quarry blasting effects in urban areas. The first version, written in 1986 by the Committee of the Brazilian Associate of Technical Norms, is currently being revised. Current regulations specify a maximum PPV limit of 15 mm/s (0.59 in/s) without consideration of frequency or type of structures being protected. The present regulation is still a draft and it is not validated. Several different agencies and institutions have participated in the Committee such as the Environmental Agency from the State of São Paulo (CETESB), University of São Paulo (POLI-USP), University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), National Department of Mineral Resources (DNPM), Aggregate Industry (ANEPAC and SINDIPEDRAS), besides a number of industry representatives, explosives manufactures and independent consultants. The present regulation proposes to modify the limits of particle velocity and introduces new definitions and criteria for evaluation of vibrations, as well recommendations to address blast vibration complaints.

A breakwater is a construction for protecting the marine structures like port, harbor, or anchorage-basin and berthed marine vessels from the destructive influence of the sea waves. The breakwater is constructed by using geologically competent, heavy, massive rock like granite, basalt etc having physical and mechanical properties within the limits specified by the designers. The construction requires boulders in varying sizes ranging from 0.5 kg to 20,000 kg. The stones from 0.5 to 1000 kg are called as core fill and boulders greater than 1000 kg are termed as armor blocks. These armor blocks cover and protect the core fill and prevent it from escaping. The requirement of armor blocks ranges between 25 to 35 %. The rest is core fill. However, the actual requirement depends on the breakwater design. In this context, the task of the mining engineer is to economically produce armor blocks and core from the designated quarry in right proportion with minimal losses. The whole bunch of engineering ingenuities should be put forth for obtaining the required armor blocks. The armor block production from any blast depends chiefly on geological conditions, bench dimensions and blast design. This paper is an attempt to bring out the various parameters affecting the performance of the blasting for armor block production using a case study.

Blasting has an important impact on mining and milling well beyond the necessary ability to dig and load the ore efficiently. There is an increasing body of blasting research indicating significant impacts in crushing and grinding. These include increased production through higher output and fewer delays for bridging and jamming by oversize. In addition, fragmentation better suited to the crushing and grinding system is indicated to lead to reduce energy consumption by these activities, an important result in today’s environment. An important component of optimum fragmentation for this purpose appears to be micro-fracturing within individual fragments. This differs from fragmentation criteria for loading which focus mostly on fragment size. Therefore, one must analyze blasting broadly to obtain satisfactory results throughout the operation.

In the continuous search to provide comprehensive solutions and identify opportunities to improve ore traceability, from the blastholes to mill feed, different ore traceability systems have been developed, which allow tracking the ore and associating its geometallurgical characterization of different sectors of interest from blasting to the processing plant, facilitating decision making and operational actions when detected during each stage of the plant. With the objective of improving the ore tracking from the mine to the processing plant in a Peruvian copper mine operation, the impact on the processing plant was evaluated in relation to blasting optimizations through a tracker system, relating the processes performance of the whole production chain with the geotechnical and geometallurgical properties ores in real time in the process plant: detecting when it was feed waste, high grade ore, low grade ore and ore with arsenic, among others. Unit and integral tests were carried out over a period of three months, with an implementation of tracker detection portals in the processing plant, which allowed to verify the proper communication of data and the web platform. The tests were focused on several blasts where the ore was in contact with waste and it were directly sent to the plant, with a classification by type of grade (high, medium, and low grade), type of material (ore-waste contour), this stage allowed to make operational adjustments in the field and in the mining operation. Finally, in the economic results, the special tests had 1000 trackers, obtaining for this project a sensitization of a cost benefit for the test stage, for the reduction of 50% of the waste material feed has crushed, with an estimated benefit of 1,987,646 USD.

Blasting operations at one copper mine are studied in detail to examine the relation between blast design parameters and near-shot, in-mine, and regional seismic and acoustic observations. Five observational experiments, namely collection of blast design data, near source recordings, GPS synchronized video, near mine recordings and distant regional observations were performed during one week in August. A variety of seismic and infrasound instruments were installed near the shot, on the perimeter of the open pit mine, and at several locations up to 500 km distant. Time tagged video recordings were taken of several shots. Three shots were used in the preliminary analysis, a 350,000 lb pattern with long delays, a 60,000 lb pattern with short delays, and a 256,000 lb pattern with short delays. Maximum peak-to-peak amplitudes of the seismic signals in the mine are not a simple function of the total size of the shot, but are related to the pattern timing. Peak pressures have a less clear relation to peak pressure but match the relative amplitudes of spectra modeled from the pattern design. The predicted spectrum based upon a simple impulse model fits the observed spectrum for ground acceleration measured near the pattern and explains why in this case a pattern of 60,000 lb results in the same seismic disturbance as the 350,000 lb pattern.

The use of explosives bring countless benefits to our everyday lives in areas such as mining, oil and gas exploration, demolition or avalanche control. However, because of the potential destructive power of explosives, strict safety procedures must be an integral part of any explosives operation. The goal of this paper is to provide a solution against the hazards which unfortunately accompany the use of explosives. For this reason, a blast shield is specifically designed and tested for protecting personnel against these unpredictable effects. This document will develop a complete analysis answering the following questions: what are the potential hazards from an air blast; what are their effects; and how can we be protected against them. In order to answer these questions, theoretical, analytical, and numerical calculations are performed. Finally, a full blast shield prototype is tested under blasting conditions proving its effectiveness as a safety device while explosives are used.

Dynamic pressures during blasting can affect performances of both electronic and non-electronic detonators. Boreholes can develop tremendous amount of pressures during blasting. The effect of such elevated pressure especially during electronic delay countdown is probably more acute in electronic detonators. Measuring the pressures during blasting can aid to understand the relationship between magnitude of the pressure developed and the multitude of blasting conditions.

This abstract explores the historical progression and key advancements in electronic detonator technology highlighting its impact on the industry as well as the challenges in deploying these types of technologies. Electronic detonators represent a significant departure from traditional initiation systems offering precise timing capabilities and improved reliability and safety. The early development of electronic detonators can be traced back to the late 20th century with the introduction of basic electronic initiation systems. These early iterations provided a glimpse into the potential for greater control and accuracy in blasting operations. As technology progressed, electronic detonators underwent significant refinement incorporating advanced features such as programmable delay times, multiple firing sequences, expanded blast size and enhanced communication capabilities. These advancements revolutionized the way explosives are deployed in mining and demolition applications enabling engineers to tailor blasts to specific geological or environmental conditions and structural requirements. One of the most notable developments in electronic detonator technology is the integration of microprocessor-based control systems. These systems allow for precise calibration of detonation parameters, including timing, sequence, and energy distribution. By leveraging microprocessor technology electronic detonators have become increasingly sophisticated offering unprecedented levels of precision and safety in blasting operations. The advent of wireless communication technologies has further augmented the capabilities of electronic detonators. Blasters face a long list of tasks to execute daily—from vehicle inspections to blast design and layout, hole loading and tie-in, securing the site, and finally, safely executing the blast. Good practices and, in most cases, regulations and requirements necessitate documenting their work, specifically their blast report. While some blasters use paper forms, others use electronic means to streamline the process. The authors have served as attorneys and expert witnesses in representing companies and individual blasters in numerous administrative and legal matters in which documentation of the blaster’s work was both critical and detrimental to the effectiveness of defending their work. This paper discusses in a case-study manner the authors' observations concerning good blast report format, specific observations around electronic and paper report completion, record-keeping, seismograph setup and recordkeeping, video and photo documentation, internal auditing, and other topics related to documenting the blast. The paper aims to serve as a discussion guide for blasters to improve their blast record-keeping process, develop better practices that effectively document their work, and allow them to defend their work should a claim arise concerning their operations.

A total of 26 full-scale production blasts at three sites were extensively monitored with sophisticated instrumentation systems to determine the benefits of more accurate detonators. The new and more accurate MS electric Masterdet detonator was tested against conventional detonators to determine any increase in productivity outputs. All blast design parameters between paired blasts were kept as constant as possible with the only difference being the inherent accuracy of both detonator systems.

The alliance is in the form of a Rock to Specification (R2S™) service, one of Orica’s Blast Based Services (BBS™). The ultimate goal was to facilitate the rapid expansion of material movement from 26 to 41M m3 (34 to 53M yd3) per annum while maintaining a reliable ore supply to the mill.
