Certain types of rock phosphates of sedimentary origin are applied to acidic soils as fertilizer directly. Recent research in India showed that high grade rock phosphate in fine size when used as a mix with organic manure works as efficiently as di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) in alkaline soils. The rock phosphate from Jhamarkotra, India (sedimentary origin), Egypt (sedimentary origin) and South Africa (volcanic origin) showed good agronomic efficiency when used as Phosphate Rich Organic Manure (PROM). Further PROM shows equal residual effect. The results of efficiency of PROM made using two grades (+ 24% P2O5 and 34% P2O5) of rock phosphate mineral from Jordan show that low grade rock phosphate slimes are as effective as high grade phosphate concentrate when used in PROM. Also PROM is very effective in the saline soil of Eshidiya desert where DAP is not at all effective.

"In order to meet the growing demand for non-Chinese rare earth suppliers many new rare earth (RE) mineral deposits are currently under development, however these deposits typically include many minerals for which there is little processing information available. One of these deposits is the Nechalacho deposit located in the North West Territories of Canada. This deposit contains multiple RE minerals including bastnäsite, zircon, fergusonite, allanite and monazite. The work presented here investigates the use of different classes of flotation collectors (carboxylic acids, hydroxamic acids, phosphoric acids) typically used in RE mineral flotation to float the Nechalacho ore directly. Flotation tests are also conducted as the final step in a beneficiation process incorporating centrifugal gravity concentration and magnetic separation. This combination of centrifugal gravity concentration and magnetic separation rejects low specific gravity gangue minerals such as K-feldspar and plagioclase and concentrates high specific gravity minerals such as magnetite and hematite. The removal of low specific gravity gangue helps to improve flotation and the removal of ferromagnetic iron oxides is important prior to flotation using certain chelating collectors."

The beneficiation of phosphate ores by froth flotation is the most efficient process used to separate apatite from gangue minerals like calcite, dolomite and quartz. However, the similarity of surface properties between apatite and calcite generally lead to non-selective adsorption of reagents, rendering the selective separation of these minerals a worldwide problem. The phosphate deposit of Itataia, State of Ceará, Brazil, studied in the present work, presents a complex mineralogical composition having uranium associated with the apatite mineral. The main gangue minerals are calcite and quartz. The bulk flotation of apatite and calcite with anionic collectors in an alkaline medium followed by the selective flotation of calcite at pH 5.5 using phosphoric acid as well as citric acid as depressant have been suggested for this ore. This paper presents the results of contact angle measurements obtained using jojoba oil, a natural reagent composed mainly of gadoleic acid (C20:1) and long-chain fatty alcohols (eicosenol and docosenol), as an alternative collector for the selective separation of apatite and calcite minerals. The hydrophobicity studies were carried out using a computer controlled contact angle goniometer. Additionally, the collector adsorption was evaluated via electrophoretic mobility and FTIR measurements. The results indicated that a high selectivity can be obtained by using jojoba oil as collector in a slightly acid pH range, without the use of depressant. The best results were achieved with a jojoba oil concentration of 200 mg.L-1 at pH 6.5, where the apatite was fully hydrophilic and calcite showed a high hydrophobicity (? > 60 º).

Pure camsellite samples were prepared through crushing, sorting and grinding the high-grade iron-containing camsellite ores from Fengcheng, Liaoning, China. The flotation behaviour of camsellite was studied via a systematic investigation of camsellite flotation re-covery changes as a function of choices and dosages of collectors and depressants at different slurry pH. The results showed that at pH 8.5 to 9.5, the recovery of camsellite reached the maximum at 90%~93.5% using dodecylamine as the collector, while under the same condition a recovery of 84%~86% could be achieved with sodium oleate. The adsorption of dodecylamine was not affected by the addition of sodium hexametaphosphate, but the adsorption of sodium oleate could be significantly depressed. This implied that sodium metahexaphosphate could be used as an effective depressant for the other associated minerals during the dodecylamine flotation of camsellite. When starch was used as the depressant, the flotation of camsellite by sodium oleate was almost completely depressed in the alkaline conditions. Significant depressions were also observed when calcium chloride was added in the camsellite-sodium oleate system. The higher the slurry pH is, the stronger the depression. Zeta potential measurements indicated that the flotation was mainly initiated by the electrostatic adsorption of the collector on camsellite. X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) analysis showed that the adsorption was originated from the electrostatic attraction between the N atom in dode-cylamine and B atom in camsellite. Dodecylamine had a higher coverage on the camsellite surface than sodium oleate.

This paper, by studying the surface properties of pure dolomite minerals separated from representative marine sedimentary rare earth-bearing phosphate ores in Zhijin, Guizhou, aims to study the effect of different anions on the ? potential of dolomite. The research findings showed that the dolomite mineral had a point of zero charge (PZC) at pH 6.5, and the PZC shifted towards lower pH values with addition of anion SiO32- and PO43-. "In addition to physical parameters such as small mass and high specific surface area of fine and ultrafine minerals, chemical parameters such as the adsorption affinity of collectors on the minerals also plays an important role in fine particle flotation. In this study, we have examined collectors with two different ionized groups, carboxylate and hydroxamate, on the flotation of fine niobium oxide (pyrochlore). To facilitate comparison, two hydrocarbon radicals were tested: octyl and oleoyl, which led to four collectors that were studied: octyl hydroxamic acid (OHA), sodium octanoate (C8OONa), oleoyl hydroxamic acid (C18HA), and sodium oleate (NaOl). Small-scale flotation and isothermal microcalorimetric titration measurements were performed to determine the flotation recoveries of different sized pyrochlore and the enthalpic behavior after adsorption of the collectors on pyrochlore. It was found that the flotation performance of the carboxylate-based collectors was generally inferior to hydroxamate-based collectors. Sodium octanoate could not float pyrochlore irrespective of the particle size of the pyrochlore tested. With a longer hydrocarbon chain, sodium oleate was effective to float the relatively coarse pyrochlore (>20 µm) but its collection efficiency dropped sharply for particles smaller than 20 µm. On the other hand, the two hydroxamate-based collectors, octyl hydroxamic acid and oleoyl hydroxamic acid, showed good collecting ability to both the coarse and fine pyrochlore. The isothermal microcalorimetric titration studies indicated a consistent correlation of chain length with floatability of collectors for relatively coarse pyrochlore, as well as a positive relationship between the adsorption affinity and fine pyrochlore flotation recoveries. The key finding of this study was that efficient fine particle flotation could be achieved when strongly chemisorbing collectors were used.INTRODUCTION The first detailed study of the effect of particle size on flotation was made by Gaudin (1931) with sulphide ores. In 1942, Gaudin again demonstrated that (Gaudin et al., 1942) fine particles possess different flotation properties from larger particles. Since then the effect of particle size on froth flotation has been an important research topic by many researchers, e.g., Gaudin (1957), Miettinen et al. (2010), Warren (1976) Jameson (2010), summarizing the behavior of fine particles in terms of their low particle momentum, leading to low rate of collision with bubbles which reduces the chance of adhesion. The suggested remediation methods are mainly based on two approaches: increasing particle size or decreasing bubble size (Warren, 1976). Sand-fine splitting followed by separate flotation treatment of the sand and fines, using deep flotation cells, using starvation quantities of collectors, and using long flotation times, are also strategies to address the problems of fine particle flotation."

Yunnan mineral is a kind of containing Ta-Nb rare earth deposit, the most potential economic valuable element in it is Sc, and raw mineral has 17.0 g/t Sc. Take the character of Sc into account, the key problem in producing scandium chloride molten salt by adaptive technology is how to man-ufacturer anhydrous scandium chloride molten salt. During the course above, the key problem is that preventing Scandium chloride from being hy-drolyzed into ScOCl. The ScOCl content of molten salt not only affect purifying scandium but al-so do harm to the production of Mg-Al alloy. In order to restrain the creation of ScOCl, add ammo-nium chloride into molten salt. As long as ScOCl is created, it would be chloridized. Thus, during the course of dehydrating anhydrous chloride molten salt this method prevents scandium from hydrolyzing. Accordingly, the key phase of this producing course is eliminate ammonium chloride and the surplus crystal water, and the most crucial of it is restrain scandium chloride from being hydrolyzed into ScOCl. This research analyzed the theory that ammonium chloride is trend to be hydrolyzed into ammo-nium chloride, and propose the research scheme of restraining this process from creating ScOCl. The new process of restraining the generating of ScOCl and dehydration for crystal water rare earth chloride is adopted: Inert gas temperature increases rapidly to a certain degree to eliminate ammonium chloride and crystal water. The experimental research were done such as : the temperature of eliminating ammonium chloride and crystal water, amount of ammonium chloride, time, temperature growth speed, influence of inert gas flow toward to scandium percent hydrolysis, whereby, we conclude the optimal process condition in this period: Temperature: 400°C, proportion of oxidized scandium and ammonium chloride is 1:1.5(Proportion of oxidized scandium and additional salt is 1:5.4), time is 120minute, temperature growth speed is 10?/min inert gas flow is 5L/min.

In this study, the effect of different regrinding conditions on the depression of fine pyrite at the cleaner stage was investigated. The regrinding condition was manipulated by different grinding media (stainless steel and mild steel). It was found that, after regrinding with mild steel grinding media, the flotation recovery of pyrite is much lower than with stainless steel grinding media, and it is more difficult to restore by adding more collector. This means, regrinding with mild steel grinding media may depress the pyrite flotation more strongly. The copper activation of pyrite during regrinding was also studied. It was found, that the mild steel grinding media is more beneficial to copper activation than stainless steel media. Additionally, the analysis of pyrite recovery based on the particle size indicated, that the fine particles are more susceptible to different grinding environments than intermediate and coarse particles and therefore are more easily depressed with a much lower flotation recovery.

"Tatasteel’s West Bokaro washery#3 is designed to deslime raw coal at 0.5mm; the oversize (+0.5mm) is beneficiated in dense media cyclones (DMC) while the undersize (-0.5mm) is beneficiated in froth flotation (FF) cells. Nearly, 80% of the raw coal feed reports to the DMC circuit consisting of four parallel streams. Presently, the performance of DMCs at washery#3 is interpreted by: (a) comparing the actual plant yield w.r.t the lab predicted yield and (b) misplacement of clean coal to middllings.However, the comparison between actual & lab predicted yield is fallacious given the fact that the lab predicts yield of the borehole sample while the feed received at the plant has different characteristics altogether due to the dilution during mining. To mitigate the said limitations, a quick diagnosis tool using the past data has been developed that will give a prediction of performance of different coal seams in the DMCs, inputs being feed ash to DMCs and stream wise feed specific gravity (coal & magnetite combined).The tool also will help in identifying the root cause on real time basis thereby helping the operator to take necessary corrective actions. The operator can intimate the mining personnel in cases of shale reporting to the feed as a result of dilution during mining. In events of higher standard deviations between the parallel streams w.r.t feed specific gravity, the operator can adjust the parameters accordingly to minimize the yield loss. INTRODUCTION West Bokaro came into existence in 1948, as an independent coal company, managed by M/S Anderson Wright. Tata Steel acquired the Company in 1956 to meet its requirement of metallurgical grade coal for Iron making. Subsequently, in 1976, it was made a division of Tata Steel. In 1974, when coal mines were nationalized, West Bokaro was exempted as it produced coal only for captive consumption of the Steel Works. The first washery of India was set up in West Bokaro. The business objective of the West Bokaro division is to produce clean coal at optimum cost for captive use in the steel plant of Tata Steel at Jamshedpur. The strategy is to reduce ash with minimum loss of yield so that quality of coal improves and yet the cost is beneficial vis-a vis imported coal. The primary product is the metallurgical grade coal for coke ovens, which converts coal into coke for use in the Blast Furnaces."

The productivity index of the Coopracarcegua Ltda., a mid-size coal mining company of Norte de Santander, Colombia, was related absenteeism using accident, productivity and profit data four years. The analysis was based on type, severity and frequency of accidents, number of absentee days; price per metric ton, and other relevant parameters. The enterprise is formed by 5 different mines of thermic coal, each one with different exploitation technologies and different productivity. Each mine was analysed separately and the loss of profit due to absenteeism was calculate for each one. The study showed that the foregone earnings due to absenteeism in terms of the whole productivity of the enterprise was about of 6.6% of the total profit average the 4 years, with calculated values of 14.7%, 3.5%, 8.4% and 4% per year in the evaluated period. The study identified that the most important cause of absenteeism was "General Disease". The foregone earnings in 2009, the highest loss for the analysed period, was about US$ 0.937 million and during the whole evaluated period was US$ 2.46 million.

The basic objectives of current EU waste policy are to prevent waste and promote re-use, recycling and recovery to reduce negative environmental impact (2008/98/EC). In this paper, we focus on drivers and barriers for sustainable development by decreasing amount of waste and increasing material efficiency. Main target is to understand what are the most efficient drivers for environmental friendly decision making for reasonable consumption and use of raw materials. Environmental control instruments usually mean those actions the regulatory authority uses to control and limit environmentally harmful behavior of companies. A major change in the environmental control system took place in the 1980s with the focus moving from specific environmental issues to the environment as a whole. The environmental control system i.e. the legal (administrative), economic and informative instruments focuses on prevention. Before and still, the legislation is one of the main drivers in improving material efficiency. In this paper, we focus on drivers and barriers for effective industrial material use, and mainly on drivers. The objective of this study is to analyze how the drivers are working and are there any possibilities to influence on those. Our aim is also to introduce few examples of the existing supply chains and the drivers for better environmental performance and material efficiency. These examples are also compared with ideal reference scenarios. Our main research question in this article is: ?Are the financial issues the most important driver for environmental friendly strategic decisions?? In addition, retell the story from another perspective: ?The most important barrier for environmental friendly innovations seem to be the investment cost, the high risk involved in committing capital to unproven technology.? Other drivers, like the corporate social responsibility, stakeholder pressure, and general public pressure, will also affect the final decision. N-Methyl-2-pyrollidone (NMP) has already been proven a good solvent for extraction of coal. It is believed that organic components of coal are likely to be dissolved with the solvolytic power of NMP. During dissolution process, original coal also gets disintegrated and thus helps in further extraction. Coal extraction highly depends on temperature, coal to solvent ratio, N-Methyl-2-pyrollidone (NMP) to Ethylenediamine (EDA) ratio and the size of coal particles. The process has been established in the laboratory. There is no reference available beyond lab scale. In present study, we are running a bench scale plant with 40 kg/batch capacity. Design of experiment was done in such a way that the optimum zone of the process gets evaluated for clean coal having low ash with high yield. Bench scale plant trial was conducted based on optimum zone developed during design of experiments (DOE). From the DOE analysis it was observed that feed size and coal to solvent ratio are important parameters for this process. Total 27 experiments (four factors with 3 level of variation) were designed through Box-Behnken model. It was observed that -0.5 mm feed size of coal, 150 °C extraction temperature, 17:1 NMP to EDA ratio, 1:9 coal to solvent ratio was optimum conditions. The results obtained at optimum conditions are 50% clean coal yield with 5% ash.

"We present an analysis of trajectory and time averaged data of near gravitational material (NGM) representative coal tracer particles within a magnetite medium passing through a 100mm diameter hydrocyclone imaged with PEPT (positron emission particle tracking) at iThemba labs, Cape Town. The tracking of neutrally buoyant tracers as well as the other NGM allows an empirical study of the approximate dynamical behaviours of both the dense medium as well as the range (size and density) of particles around the separator’s cut size within a partially imaged volume of the cyclone body lying within the field of view of the detector. The study was commissioned as part of a CFD validation study using empirical data from a real-world lab-appropriate system in order to shed light on the inner workings of hydrocyclones and their separation mechanisms. We employ various optimisation and noise reduction techniques within the analysis and follow a detailed investigation of the velocity fields derived from the raw spatial positions with an emphasis on the velocity profile within the forced and free vortex zones. Challenges encountered with this high velocity particle tracking experiment within a highly attenuating environment are also discussed. Various important velocity distributions are shown and compared to theoretical predictions. The power law decay profile of the free vortex and radial velocity scaling with regards to the Froude number are reproduced in line with the static particle approach. INTRODUCTION Cyclones have long been a vital industrial tool for the separation of different classes of particles. These cyclonic separators (with either gas or liquid medium) operate by forcing the solids-bearing fluid at high pressure into a cylindrical vessel causing high tangential velocity fluid rotation as well as, in the case of an “open” (with exit channels open to the atmosphere) cyclone, a central vortex air column spanning from underflow to overflow exit. The fluid is forced to exit the cyclone at two locations, the spigot and the vortex finder, generating the underflow and overflow respectively. The body of the cyclone usually terminates in a conical shape to focus the underflow stream. This geometry and large incident fluid velocity force high density materials toward the wall of the vessel where they are most likely to move along and down the inside wall away from the inlet to exit via the underflow while lower density materials traverse the cyclone body closer to the central vortex and are buffeted by the upward-moving column towards the overflow exit. This separation mechanism is selective of density and size in an interplay between the centrifugal force due to the rotation of the fluid and a drag force acting on the particles."

Magneto-flotation is a recently developing technology of mineral processing. This technology combines the traditional magnetic separation with flotation and provides a magnetic and buoyant force compound field to separate different minerals based on the differences of magnetism and floatability between useful minerals and gangue minerals. Magneto-flotation is applicable to separate ferromagnetic from nonmagnetic minerals, especially to separate magnetite from floatable gangue minerals. This magneto-flotation column is equipped with pulse electromagnetic field in the middle upper part, a bubble producer and upwell water inlet in the bottom. The pulse time of electromagnetic field in the column can be optionally adjusted and the maximum intensity of pulse magnetic field can reach 35mT. Pulse magnetic field can not only restrain magnetic minerals from entering into the froth layer, but also destroy the magnetic agglomeration to ensure a higher recovery and a higher concentrate grade. The results of experiments with magnetite show that pulse magnetic field has remarkable influence on flotation process. Compared with single flotation, magneto-flotation column can improve the recovery of magnetite by ten percent. After one time?s magneto-flotation processing, the grade of iron concentrate can increase from 65.4% to 69.5%, the content of silicon oxide in iron concentrate decreases from 7.4% to 2.8%, and the total recovery is above 96%.

"The traditional lignin separation process from the precipitated suspension creates severe filtration problems by plugging of the filter medium due to the small particle size (20 to 60 µm) of the suspended lignins. The plugging causes further problems in the successive processing of the filter cake. A new lignin separation process has been developed at the Brandenburg University of Technology (BTU) Cottbus as a part of the Research and Development and Demonstration (R & D & D) project "LignoBioFuel". The new developed process separates lignin in the form of granules with diameters ranging from 100 µm to 300 µm. The restrainment of the granule’s size in their successive treatments is expected to result in higher filtration efficiencies and reduction in plugging of filter mediums. To evaluate the filtration efficiency, the filtration resistance of the produced granules as well as the conventional suspensions has been investigated. The results show that there is a 60 to 80 % filtration efficiency increase and around 60 % reduction in plugging of filter mediums with the lignin granules in comparison to the conventional suspensions. Furthermore the successive processing of lignin granules was easier due to their porous structures removing the impurities such as adherent acids and salts. The purity of the separated lignin was measured with their sulphur (reduced from 7 % to 2.7 %) and ash (reduced from 46 % to 0.5 %) contents. The newly developed process has displayed better results in comparison to that of the conventional process. The new process displays high potentials in optimizing and improving the present state of the art treatments and is promising several ecological, economical and environmental improvements."

In this study, selective flocculating of diaspore using anion macromolecular reagent as flocculant was tested to separate diaspore from alum-silicate minerals. Firstly, the effect of pH on settling behavior of diaspore and kaolinite dispersions has been investigated. The results show that the maximum settling speed of diaspore and kaolinite appeared re-spectively at pH7 and pH3.33 which is close to the point of zero charge (PZC) of diaspore (6.8) and kaolinite(3.5). This result is in well agreement with the double electric layer theory. Secondly, the settling behavior of diaspore and kaolinite particles in different anion flocculant solution have been researched. The results indicate that flocculant solution concentration significantly affect the selectivity and the flocculating performance of anion molecular. In high concentration solution, both diaspore and kaolinite have faster settling rate compared to blank solution. How-ever, in low concentration solution, the anion macromolecular can enhance the settling rate of diaspore remarkably but has no apparent effect on the settling rate of kaolinite. This result suggests that the tested anion flocculant is a promising reagent for de-silica of diasporic bauxite. Lastly, FTIR method was employed to probe the adsorption mechanism of flocculant on diaspore and kaolinite. The results reveal that there are anion flocculant characteristic bands on the spectra of diaspore but no obvious characteristic bands of flocculant on the FTIR spectrum of kaolinite. This result is in good correspondence with settling test.

The value creation with kaolin clays depends on removing the colored impurities which manifests in to higher brightnessone of the most sought after properties on applications such as paper coating, paint and others. The processes for removing impurities include magnetic separation, froth flotation and selective flocculation. While the flotation and selective flocculation processes exploit the physico-chemical differences between the surface properties, the magnetic separation uses the bulk magnetic susceptibility differences between the diamagnetic clay and ferro- and para-magnetic nature of the impurities. The major advantage with magnetic separation remains high yield and no or low reagent usage. However, the magnetic separation technology suffers from low separation efficacy when finer colored impurities (<1 µm) are encountered in the feed. Use of stronger magnetic intensities during magnetic separation showed limited success; nonetheless the adverse effect due to finer size range remains a dominant effect even at 5 Tesla magnetic field. Furthermore, the presence of diamagnetic colored impurities irrespective of their sizes can not be removed. Cytec Industries has recently developed a ?bolt-on? chemical enhancement technology for magnetic separation that essentially embraces the best product performance attributes of flotation and selective flocculation while keeping the chemical usage to a minimum level and using the readily available magnetic separation equipment. The paper will outline the technology and illustrate optimization work at pilot plant magnet on a wide variety of crude accommodating the process needs and plant limitations. The major advantages of chemical enhancement technology to magnetic separation include: 1) simple extension to existing magnetic separation technology, 2) ability to produce comparable product in quality with cost effectiveness compared to flotation and selective flocculation, 3) removal of impurity minerals over wide size range, 4) removing non-magnetic impurities, 5) providing robust process with high process yield and 6) operation-friendly nature. Furthermore, chemical enhancement technology for magnetic separation has also emerged as a platform for re-moving impurities at low levels in other mineral systems as well.

The Mojiang nickel deposit is situated in Mojiang county, yunnan province, a tropical area in the southwestern China. The known geological resource (measured and inferred) includes 4 million tons of nickel sulphide ore at an average grade of 0.50% Ni and 0.34% As. Nickel minerals are mainly gersdorffite (NiAsS), millerite(NiS), morenosite (NiSO4?7H2O), and more than 50% nickel minerals is gersdorffite which contains arsenic. Pyrite is the dominant sulfide mineral, 22% in the ore and part of nickel minerals are locked in pyrite. It is difficult to attain the nickel concentrate quality allowed by a smelter and the acceptable nickel recovery through flotation due to the high arsenic in the ore and the nickel minerals locked in pyrite. The shake flask tests and column tests for nickel recovery from the Mojiang nickel sulfide ore had been finished by the end of 2003. The column bioleaching tests were carried out using the columns with diameter of 120 mm and height of 1200 mm, and 70% of nickel dissolution was attained in 300 days. A 10,000t pilot test heap was built in the Mojiang Nickel Mine by June 2003. The ore used in the test heap was supplied from the underground mine and was crushed to -20 mm before being feeding to the test heap, which is 4~5 m high, 30 m wide and 50 m long. The naturally adapted mesophile and moderate thermophile have been inoculated into the leaching pile by June 2003. The operating temperature in the heap ranges from 38? to 55?, varying with season. 30% of nickel dissolution was achieved in 3 months and the typical pregnant leach so-lution (PLS) contains 2~3 g/L Ni and 20~30 g/L Fe. The Ni sulfide which was produced by us-ing Na2S 10 t/t?Ni contains 16%~20% Ni and Ni recovery was 98%. 70% of Ni dissolution is expected in 12 months. The test heap was scaled up to 60,000 t of ore per year by mid of 2005. In this paper metallurgical studies and performance of the pilot test heap will be described. The results of mineralogy, shake flask tests and column tests on bioleaching of the nickel sulfide ore are reviewed. The key test heap operation parameters, the performance of bio-heap leahing-Na2S precipitation, ferrous oxidation-ferric precipitation-Na2CO3 precipitation, bacteria in the pile, water and acid balance, effluent disposal, capital and operation costs are also discussed.

Oxidized zinc ores are the main source of zinc metal except sulfides. To have a better understanding about the performance of smithsonite and the main gangue, quartz, in flotation, the aggregation behaviors of smithsonite and quartz in water were confirmed by different techniques (sedimentation tests and optical microscopy). The experimental results show that smithsonite and quartz particles aggregate in the pH range 7.5-11. The results of zeta potential suggest that the aggregation does not correlate with the DLVO theory, when the iso-electric point of smithsonite and quartz is 8.0 and 2 respectively. When the solution pH is less than 8.0, smithsonite has an opposite charge to the quartz particles. Electrostatic adsorption makes effort on these two kinds of particles according to DLVO theory. Whereas, solution chemistry calculation shows the pH range 8-11 corresponds to hydroxide formation, suggesting that this is the species responsible for aggregation. And their concentrations are much higher in sodium hydroxide system than that in sodium carbonate system. Aggregation of smithsonite and quartz due to the flocculation action of zinc hydroxide is proposed.

Acid drainage waters generated in the uranium deposit Curilo, Bulgaria, were treated by means of a pilot-scale passive system consisting of a permeable reactive multibarrier and a constructed wetland connected in a series. The multibarrier had a total volume of 23 m3 and consisted of an alkalizing limestone drain and an anoxic section for microbial dissimilatory sulphate reduction, bio-sorption and additional chemical neutralization. The waters had a pH in the range of about 2.5 ~ 4.0 and contained radionuclides (uranium, radium), heavy metals (copper, zinc, cadmium, lead, nickel, cobalt, iron, manganese), arsenic and sulphates in concentrations usually much higher than the relevant permissible levels for waters intended for use in agriculture and/or industry. The water flow rate through the multibarrier varied in the range of about 1 ~ 17 m3/24 h, reflecting water residence times of about 300 ~ 18 hours. An efficient removal of pollutants was achieved by the multibarrier during different climatic seasons, even during cold winter days at external air and water temperatures close to 0oC. The multibarrier effluents were enriched in dissolved organic compounds and in some cases still contained manganese and iron in concentrations higher than the relevant permissible levels. These pollutants were removed in the constructed wetland as a result of the activity of different heterotrophic microorganisms, including some bacteria able to oxidize the bivalent manganese and iron ions to Mn4+ and Fe3+, respectively.
