"After the milling and flotation of the platinum bearing ore, the flotation concentrate is electrically smelted in 6-in-line electric arc furnaces and the resulting furnace matte treated in Peirce Smith converters to remove the iron sulphide. The iron free (less than 1% Fe) converter matte is then granulated and sent to the Base Metals- and Precious Metals Refineries for further processing.During the smelting and converting processes two distinct gas streams are produced.The Peirce Smith converter off gas contains 4% - 9% SO2 which is treated in a conventional Sulphuric Acid Plant to produce sulphuric acid (H2SO4).The electric furnace off gas contains 0.9% SO2 and was (until September 2002) vented through a 91 meter high stack to atmosphere.Off gasses which contain less than 3% SO2 is difficult to handle and quite a few processes had been developed over the years to cope with this gas. A broad spectrum of process suppliers and technology approaches is available and the different technologies can be divided into a few main approaches i.e.Scrubbing of the off gas with an alkaline solution to produce an environmentally friendly and stable waste product which can be discharged onto a tailings dam or permanent landfill site.Physical absorption of the SO2 into a chemical solution to produce high quality chemically pure process chemicals.Catalytic reaction of SO2 with O2 to produce SO3 which is absorbed in water to produce sulphuric acid of less than 90% strength.In October 2002 Impala Platinum commissioned a Sulfacid Plant at its Smelter in Rustenburg which recovers the SO2 from the electric furnace off gasses into a weak sulphuric acid solution.The Sulfacid Plant technology is widely used in the paint pigment industry. This is, however, the first application of the technology on electric furnace off gas.The furnace off gasses contains flue dust which is removed in electrostatic precipitators. The gas exiting the precipitators normally still contains between 40 mg/Nm3 and 60 mg/Nm3 dust and passes through a quench-scrubber before entering the reactors. The quench-scrubber cools the electric furnace offgas down from ± 200 °C to 60 °C and act as a final dust removal stage."

This paper presents the research on comprehensive recovery of copper, gold, silver and iron from tailings from high-intensity magnetic separation in Tonglushan Mine. By comparison of experimental results of three flowsheets?regrinding of tailings-conventional sulphidizing flotation, water heating enhanced sulphidizing flotation and acid leaching-sulphidizing precipitation flotation, it is concluded that regrinding of tailings-conventional sulphidizing flotation flowsheet has the best economical and technical performance and practicability. Regrinding and using the mixture of sodium hydroxamate and sodium xanthate are two of the notable technical characteristics of this best flowsheet. The system for comprehensive recovery of tailings has been put into production. It not only can recover the valuable minerals from tailings in Tonglushan Mine, but also can reduce the environmental pollution, resulting great economic and social benefit.

Producing robust agglomerates with desirable structural properties is the key to success of the heap leaching of complex, low-grade nickel laterite ores. Mechanically strong but porous agglomerates with narrow size distribution (e.g., 5 ? 40 mm) are required to build permeable and perennially stable heaps of 4 ? 10 m height. The characterization of granules? microstructure is essential for greater understanding and correlation with the concomitant mechanical properties and robustness. In this study, we used non-destructive, computed X-Ray tomography analyses and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in tandem with conventional compressive strength,and integrity/stability tests to draw links between nickel (Ni) laterite agglomerate strength/stability, internal microstructure (e.g.,porosity, inter-particle bridges) and binder type. It is shown that binder composition (e.g., tap water vs. 30% w/w H2SO4) and post-agglomeration drying both significantly impact on granules? physicochemical and microstructural properties. Acidic binder, in contrast with tap water, leads to significant incongruent leaching of different species from particles during ore-binder mixing and agglomeration. Upon wet agglomerate curing, solidified/recrystallized leached species form strong intra-granular solid bridges which, lead to greater compressive strength of dry agglomerates. Structural stability/integrity of cured agglomerates in acidic solution, however, decreases dramatically due to greater porosity and acid solubility of intra-granular solid bridges. These findings are useful in shedding more light on agglomerate structure characteristics and their optimization for enhanced column and heap leaching with concentrated sulphuric acid.

In the region of the North-Bohemian Coal Basin and its environment, there, in a row of places, are found the accumulations of rocks of the sedimentary and pyro clastic origin, the preliminary composition of those shows the possibility of their being utilized for the production of ecologically sparing natural Fe- and Ti- pigments and filling substances. In many places of the regions of Chomutov and Podborany and near Bilina and also in other places, there are found raw stocks perspective for the preparation of yellow up to ochre-brown, red, brown-red and green dyes. The target of project is the verification of dispensable reserves, their mineralogical composition and chemical and physical attributes, verification of treatment ways of Fe-and Ti-pigments separation (hydrocyclones, magnetic and electrostatic separation) and their stabilization and technological painting attributes for applications in colors, coating and plastic masses, mortar mixtures etc.

"There are increasingly stricter environmental regulations imposed for use of cyanide leaching for the extraction of gold from ores. Alternative lixiviants to cyanide, preferably with low toxicity, have been extensively studied. Thiosulphate has emerged as one of the most suitable alternative leaching agent in place of cyanide due to its low toxicity and technical attributes e.g. fast leaching kinetics, high gold extractions from carbonaceous ores in particular. High solubility of most copper minerals in cyanide solutions results in low gold extractions due to excessively high consumption of cyanide. In contrast, low reactivity of copper minerals in thiosulphate solutions makes thiosulphate leaching potentially suitable alternative for treatment Cu-bearing gold ores. The extraction of gold/silver from a copper-bearing pyritic gold concentrate (62 g/t Au, 110 g/t Ag and 0.3% Cu) in thiosulphate solutions was investigated in this study. The concentrate is composed of predominantly quartz (25%) and pyrite (32.7%) as well as sphalerite (5.37%), galena (2.12%) and anglesite (1.13%). Other minor minerals are arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, covellite and bournonite. Previous studies by the authors indicated that the concentrate did not respond well to cyanide leaching (i.e. 45-46% Au/Ag at 1 g/L NaCN). The effects of concentration of ammonia (0.2-1.5 M NH3), thiosulphate (0.1-0.75 M S2O3) and copper (0-20 mM CuSO4) on the extraction of gold and silver over 8 h. was investigated. Increasing the concentration of thiosulphate and ammonia substantially improved the rate and extent of gold leaching while high copper levels produced an adverse effect particularly at low concentration of thiosulphate (i.e. 0.1 M). Complete extraction of gold was achieved under suitable conditions. In contrast to gold, silver extractions remained consistently at low levels (i.e. 28%). These findings demonstrated that thiosulphate leaching could be used to achieve acceptable levels of gold extraction from the copper-bearing pyritic gold concentrate."

Cyanidation of gold ore results in formation not only of Na[Au(CN)2], but also cyanometallate complexes of some transition metals. During subsequent gold extraction from such solutions and pulps, using activated carbons (??), a number of problems arise. An effective solution of the problem is not possible without detailed knowledge of the interaction mechanism of transition metals cyanide complexes with AC particles. The chemical properties of AC particles and graphene, saturated with [?u(CN)n](n-1)- (n=2, 3), were studied by XPS, ESR, SQUID, and DFT. The obtained results were compared with the data on AC adsorption of anionic form of Ag(I), Au(I), Cd(II), Hg(II), Cr(III), Fe(II), Fe(III), Co(III), Rh(III), Ni(II), Pd(II), Pt(II) and Pt(IV) cyanide complexes. The adsorption of [?u(CN)n](n-1)- (n=2, 3) on AC from aqueous solutions in air is accompanied with oxidation of ?u(I) atoms. Besides, Cu(II) and Cu(III) compounds were found on AC surface. Quantum-chemical calculations confirmed the possibility of formation of Cu(I) complex with carbene-like sites of AC. The reactions of [?u(CN)n](n-1)- (n=2, 3) complexes and aromatic carbenes and their cation-radical were theoretically studied at DFT PBE level to obtain the information on adsorption of cyanometallate complexes on AC. Carbenes with different fragments were regarded as a model of activated carbons, which have free edge sites with paired o and n electrons. It was shown that [Cu(CN)2]- bounds firmly with triplet carbene, if one Cu-CN bond breaks. The dissociation process occurs through a multi-step spin-crossing mechanism to reduce total spin multiplicity of the metal-carbene complex. The behavior of transition element complexes in contact with AC in aqueous solutions is determined by the following characteristics: geometrical structure of ionic complexes; nature of ligands bonded to the central atom; concentration of reactive oxygen species in solution and its pH; nature of binding sites of AC.

The precipitation of a selection of metals from both a synthetic and an actual metal-rich effluent was investigated. The experimental aspects of this study were carried out in a two-stage process consisting of a pre-treatment clarifier and a fluidised bed (pellet) reactor. Each unit operation in the two-stage process was investigated separately. The pre-treatment clarification stage at pH ˜ 5 resulted in a 99.9% removal of iron and 97.3% removal of aluminium. The pellet reactor was used to precipitate nickel as nickel carbonate from a pure stream and a removal efficiency of 99.6% was achieved. The high local supersaturation at the reagent inlet points caused the formation of a large amount of fines, but these agglomerated onto the pellets up the length of the bed. For copper precipitated as copper sulphide from a pure stream, a maximum removal efficiency of 92% was achieved. The high local supersaturation at the reagent inlets also caused the formation of a large amount of fines, but the extremely sparingly soluble nature of copper sulphide meant that the fines were not agglomerated up the length of the bed. For removal of cobalt as cobalt carbonate from an actual stream, a stable cobalt removal of only 60% was achieved. This was found to be due to the presence of magnesium, which reduced the cobalt precipitation efficiency through the formation of the magnesium bicarbonate ion.

Based on full investigation of the characteristic of sphalerite in the residue obtained from cyanidation leaching process and the study of the mechanism of the interaction between flotation reagents and sphalerite with the aid of electrochemical analysis, the reagent named YO was developed for eliminating the depression effect of CN- on sphalerite and reducing the dosage of CuSO4. The achievements have been used in commercial production for the treatment of the cyanidation residue to recover the zinc minerals, obtaining a zinc concentrate with grade of 56.49% Zn and recovery of 86.63% Zn.

The present study aimed to investigate the bioleaching efficiency of moderate thermophilic microorganism in a growth medium without Fe supplement on three different size fractions of spent catalyst obtained from petroleum refinery. All the experiments were conducted on shake flasks at a temperature of 65 °C and a pulp density of 10% (w/v) on three size fractions viz. 45-106 µm, 106-212 µm and >212 µm and a working volume of 100 ml comprising of 10 ml of microbial inoculums and 90 ml of Modified Kelly medium. The parameters like pH, redox potential, viable planktonic cell count and the amount of acid addition was measured and quantified on regular basis to follow the progress of the bioleaching. The pH varied much in the lag and logarithmic phase of the experiments but stabilized toward the stationary phase. The total acid additions in each batch experiment were determined the amount of Conc. H2SO4 requirement, which ranged between 683-757 kg/ton of spent catalyst. The redox potential values ranged between 625-650 mV, Ag/AgCl, but were very low ranging between 350-450 mV during initial period. The planktonic viable cell count ranged between 108-109 cells/ml active in the bioleaching system, without any toxic influence of the spent catalyst, but initially due to fall in redox potential and new environment for the microbes, their population was low. The leaching yield of Ni was found to be promising with very high leaching yield of 92-96% followed by Al as 61-62%, which means both Ni and Al leaching were favored by the moderate thermophilic bioleaching compared to the mesophilic bioleaching. There was very little difference in the leaching yield, when compared with different size fractions and hence grinding can be avoided prior to leaching. This process seems to be economical as no Fe source is supplemented together with no requirement of grinding and over all a biological process resulting for an eco-friendly process for future optimization of the metal recovery from petroleum refinery spent catalysts. "Banded iron formations are the major iron source for producing high grade concentrate. BIF are generally lower grade and more difficult to extract. In order to know how best to process BIF ore, it require comprehensive knowledge on ore bodies even in the early stages of the mining process. Geometallurgy combines geological and mineral processing information and allows for higher flexibility in response to changes in the plant feed when mining different parts of the ore. This can lead to economic benefits, owing to improved plant operation, yet is time consuming and correspondingly costly. The main focus of this paper work has been to develop a comprehensive geometallurgical testing framework for developing Yogi BIF low grade magnetite deposit located at Western Australia. In order to provide successful geometallurgical mapping, was collected data from several different disciplines (geology, chemistry, mineralogy) and parameters (physical properties, metallurgical response and geotechnical measurements) during drilling activities and test work. The investigation shown magnetic separation behavior of material had high variation and is most important element in the proper design of ore beneficiation plant. This paper provides an improved and efficient magnetic separation test methods used for the investigation of separation behavior and variability of the Yogi Ore deposit and evaluates their applicability and potential in the geometallurgical context. In this paper a small-scale magnetic separation has been developed that allows estimating from single pass separation test using small amounts of sample material. Verification of the evaluation method and validation was done with different mineral systems."

"The triboelectric charge attributes of feldspar, quartz and wollastonite minerals, after contacting different triboecharging medium made of different materials, were considered. Their charge acquisitions by different size fractions of minerals were monitored and accordingly their energetic work function values were estimated. Moreover the separation behaviours of these minerals through the electric field of a laboratory free falling separator were determined and the effects of some chemical reagents on separation their separation characteristics were studied.Finally an attempt was made to translate the findings from single mineral systems to a complex silicate ore, containing quartz, feldspars, wollastonite and some other silicates. The results show favourable prospect to apply the triboelectric separation technique for beneficiation such a complex raw material."

The ore studied occurred in the Three Rivers area in China and was a silver-lead-zinc complex ore containing 400.52 g/t silver, 4.77 % lead and 3.47 % zinc. Silver, lead and zinc were the major valuable elements in the ore and copper, cadmium and tin were the associated elements to be comprehensively recovered, whereas arsenic was the harmful element. The element silver occurred mainly in freibergite with small proportion in dyscrasite and other silver minerals. The carrier minerals for silver were mainly galena and oxidized lead minerals and then sphalerite, arsenopyrite and pyrite. The ore contained numerous minerals with complex mosaic texture and the lead and zinc minerals enclosed each other multiply, which made the separation of the minerals in the ore very difficult. Experimental investigation on the beneficiation of the ore indicated that with flotation separation process it was very hard to obtain single lead concentrate or single zinc concentrate that would meet the requirement of market. In the meantime, during the separation process of lead and zinc, silver tended to be dispersed, resulting in a low recovery of silver. Therefore, a rational utilization technique for the ore should be a combined process of bulk flotation to reduce arsenic? sulphating roasting of silver-lead-zinc bulk concentrate-leaching with diluted sulphuric acid to separate silver, lead and zinc. With this process quality lead concentrate containing silver and high grade zinc product and silver product could be obtained. The recovery of silver, lead and zinc in flotation was 85.10%, 84.48% and 82.48%, respectively. The total recovery of silver, lead and zinc in chemical processing was 97.07%(sum of recovery of silver ingot and lead concentrate), 99.61% and 90.93%, respectively.

Many thickener operations continue to be constrained by their ability to process consolidated underflows with high yield stress and associated rheological characteristics. To maximise separation efficiencies within a thickener operation the use of both engineering and reagents are always considered. BASF is developing a Novel Flocculant Technology (NFT), which combines both of these aspects to enhance the performance of the thickener operation, improving the areas of pumping efficiency, underflow density and throughput. The development progression through stages of laboratory scale batch test work to pilot scale dynamic testing has demonstrated the ability of BASF NFT to maintain effective flocculation performance whilst increasing the rate of underflow consolidation, and significantly reducing the associated underflow yield stress of the treated material. This paper will present application data through full scale dynamic testing conducted on a granite washing circuit to demonstrate the performance benefits that NFT offers to a thickener operation. Compared to the conventional flocculant treatment, within the operation parameters and conditions employed during the full scale trials, the NFT produced a reduction in underflow rheology (yield stress) of around 45 % relative to a given solids and improved the underflow consolidation by providing at least 20% relative higher underflow solids loading than the upper limit of the given typical thickener operation. This study compares the use of an aminophosphonate chelating resin Purolite S950 and a sulphonic acid strong cation exchange resin Purolite C160H to recover nickel and cobalt from the synthetic bioleach solutions. Batch adsorption of metal citrate is performed as a function of metal citrate concentration (15~2000 mg/L) and solution pH (0.01M and 0.1M citric acid). The adsorption mechanism as inferred from the fit to Langmuir (LM), Freundlich (FM) and Redlich-Peterson (RP) models demonstrates that nickel citrate adsorbed onto C160H appears monolayer in comparison to that adsorbed onto S950 exists multilayer. In contrast, cobalt citrate adsorption onto both C160H and S950 agrees with the LM model. The results have shown that loading capacities of nickel and cobalt citrate onto C160H are 60 and 65 mg/g whereas those observed onto S950 are 16mg/g and 6 mg/g respectively. These are achieved in metal citrate prepared in 0.1 M citric acid. Resin regeneration is conducted in using 2 M nitric acid solution. The results show high efficiency of nickel and cobalt citrate elution from Purolite C160H. Findings from this study suggest Purolite C160H is a suitable adsorbent for recovering nickel and cobalt from bioleaching solutions.

Effects due to some metal cations, such as Ca2+, Mg2+,Fe2+, Fe3+, Cu+, Cu2+, Zn2+ and Al3+ etc., which are produced in the pulp when the complicated ore is dipped in the deioned water, on the flotation of chalcopyrite and galena with the isopropyl thionocarbamate as collector have been studied. It is found that chalcopyrite floatability is not influenced by these cations, and the cations can be di-vided into three types according to their effects on the purified galena?s floatability with the same conditions, as activator such as Cu+; as depressant such as Al3+, Fe3+, Fe2+, Zn2+ and Cu2+ , unaffective such as Mg2+ and Ca2+.

Water constitutes one of the most valuable resources employed in mineral recovery and processing. Identifying potential problems encountered in mineral processing in waters unusable for drinking or agriculture (including seawater and even hypersaline waters), understanding chemical factor interactions, and optimization of flotation reagents will greatly expand our ability to create more sustainable beneficiation technologies. The current paucity of our knowledgebase regarding high salinity effects on flotation clearly signals a need for a significant research effort. We report here results of a study designed to probe effects of pulp chemistry on metallurgical performance in the flotation of Cu and Cu-Mo ores in saline waters. The results clearly demonstrate that pH (more correctly dosage of pH modifier to target a pH set point) has the most significant effect on Mo recovery when using seawater. This is linked to the formation/precipitation of Mg(OH)2 when pH = 10.3 (in seawater). The type of pH modifier used, NaOH or Ca(OH)2, had no impact on Cu or Mo recovery, indicating that Ca2+ ions were not involved in any reduction in Mo recovery in the pH range of 9-11. Our results in tap water spiked with either Ca2+ or Mg2+ ions in the same pH range (controlled by NaOH), confirmed that Ca2+ ions had no effect on Cu or Mo recovery, but that addition of Mg2+ ions had a severe adverse effect on Mo recovery at pH = 9.5, and to a lesser extent on Cu recovery. The onset of Mg(OH)2 precipitation occurred at a higher pH, and the adverse impact of Mg(OH)2 on Cu recovery (and perhaps Mo recovery as well) was less, in sea water than in tap water spiked with Mg2+. These effects are attributed to the mitigating role of the high electrolyte concentration, notably NaCl.

The results of the test work of four treatment options of three refractory gold-pyrite and gold-arsenic flotation concentrates are presented. These concentrates were obtained during the concentration of primary ores of large gold deposits. It was found that ultrafine grinding of refractory flotation concentrates did not increase the recovery of gold during subsequent cyanidation. The elimination of sulfur and arsenic during oxidative roasting is 99 per cent. 88-93 per cent of gold is recovered by cyanidation from calcines. After biooxidation of the flotation concentrates with a mixture of strains Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans 88-91 per cent of gold is recoverable by direct cyanidation. The recovery of gold from flotation concentrates by pressure oxidation is 88-99 per cent. These results suggest that gold recovery is important but the following strategies would have an impact on a plant performance and would be considered when developing an option to treat refractory ores: capital and operating costs, ore reserves, mine location, infrastructure and qualified staff. Current knowledge in the field of mining and especially mineral processing allows extracting valuable fuel from deposit coal slurries. The article discusses of previous works devoted to coal slurries inventory in Jankowice Mine in Poland (Upper Silesia) and quality assessment of coal slurries. 12 samples of coal slurries deposited in waste pond of Jankowice Mine was taken for the investigation. The Chelopech Mine, located in Central Bulgaria, is one of Europe?s largest underground copper- gold mines, currently mines and processes approximately one million tonnes of ore per year. Copper concentrates containing gold and silver with significant arsenic content are produced and sold on the world markets. The operation was acquired by Dundee Precious Metals in 2003. A modernization program for the Mine and Plant has since been in progress to increase both production and mechanical reliability, and also to optimize metallurgical recoveries. Since then, mine output and plant throughput have doubled, plant availabilities and utilization have increased significantly, and overall metallurgical performance for copper and gold improved. The paper presents the systematic approach for obtaining and analyzing data, communicating it, and making suggestions for changes to the technological parameters and flowsheet in order to maximize metal recoveries. These studies have correlated the ore characteristics (particle size distributions, metal assays, and Cu and Au mineralogical and phase analyses) with the actual plant performance (kinetics, recoveries, and throughput). Cu recovery by size has been calculated from the mineralogical analyses of feed, concentrate and tails, with the most significant losses being identified in terms of fraction and phase recoveries. This has provided the recommendations (some of them tested in plant) for changes in the grinding and flotation circuits.

This paper presents gold occurrence investigations on the altered rock gold deposit from Jiaodong area of China, and comparisons of gold occurrence in the ore samples from different mining levels. According to the results, the chemical and mineral compositions of raw materials from different mining levels are quite similar. However, the relative content and grain size of gold minerals are quite different between the two mining levels of -130m~-340m and -550m~-650m. In the ore of upper mining levels of -130m~-340m, electrum is the dominant gold mineral and accounts for about 80% of the total gold minerals, while native gold is minor and accounts for about 20%. As for the ore of deep mining levels of -550m~-650m, the major gold mineral shifts to native gold which accounts for 67%, while the ratio of electrum drops to about 33%. Coarser gold grain size was observed in the upper mining level ore with a mean size of 33.05µm while the gold grain size was much finer in the ore of deep mining levels with a mean size of 22.85µm. Furthermore, the gold mineral associations also show different patterns between the upper mining level samples and the deep mining level samples. Of the three observed gold association types such as inclusion gold, fissure gold and interparticle gold, more inclusion gold was found in the ore of deep mining levels. The inclusion gold accounts for 62% in the ore of deep mining levels, while that in the ore of upper mining levels accounts for about 56%. Further study revealed that the dominant gold associated minerals are pyrite and sulphides and only a small amount of gold is associated with quartz and silicates. It was shown that the altered rock gold ore from Jiaodong area can be regarded as a free milling gold ore, but the processing parameters should be optimized for the ores in different mining levels according to the different gold occurrence. In addition, it was predicted that enhanced gold liberation is necessary for the ore in deep mining levels.
