The objective of the paper was application of bacterial leaching on two brown coal samples from locality Mine Druzba, seams Antonin and Josef (Sokolov brown coal basin, Czech republic). Based on the results of bacterial leaching and petrologic analyses of the given samples, it is possible to say that application of bacterial leaching gived good results. Applying bacterial leaching it is possible to remove from 34% to 47% of total sulphur and from 45% to 64% of pyritic sulphur from the coal.

The development of surface charge of serpentine mineral and implications for sulphide ?otation have been studied through flotation tests, sedimentation tests, zeta potential measurements and optical microscope photos. The results show that the serpentine mineral was positively charged at an extensive pH range, with an isoelectric point (IEP) of 11.9. The magnitude and sign of the pyrite particles were pH dependent and were negative for pH values above 2. At pH value 9, where ?otation of nickel sul?de ores is routinely performed, serpentine and pyrite particles attract through an electrostatic mechanism. Slime coatings of serpentine adhere to the surface of pyrite, reducing pyrite flotation recovery. The removal of magnesium ions from the serpentine surface by acid leaching results in a decrease of serpentine IEP and eliminates the adverse effect of serpentine on pyrite flotation. Therefore, it has been clearly established that the surface charge value developed in the serpentine/aqueous electrical interface is a function of the serpentine surface incongruently dissolution. As a result of hydroxyl dissolution, the magnesium ions are left in serpentine surface, which is responsible for serpentine surface charge. The methods, which can remove magnesium ions from serpentine surface, can be used to eliminate the adverse effect of serpentine on pyrite flotation.

"The characterization of reagent-mineral interactions in flotation systems of finely intergrown ores holds difficult challenges for the applicability of standard techniques like Hallimond tube tests and contact angle experiments or renders them impossible due to a lack of sufficient samples in terms of quality and quantity. This disadvantage may not apply to more sophisticated techniques, but these often do not work in an aqueous environment. We present the utilization of an atomic force microscope with a hydrophobic colloidal probe to characterize the wettabilities of individual mineral domains of an ore sample, while additional spectral information is gathered by Raman spectroscopy. The exemplary ore sample investigated is mainly containing cassiterite and quartz, therefore the reference measurements like Hallimond tube tests and contact angle experiments were carried out with this binary system as a comparison. The focus of the study lies in the correlation of data gathered by the atomic force microscope and the Raman spectrometer with data from standard techniques. Finally, the applicability of the colloidal probe atomic force microcopy technique for reagent-mineral investigations is critically evaluated.INTRODUCTIONThe focus of this paper is the application of colloidal probe atomic force microscopy (CP-AFM) for theinvestigation of reagent-mineral interactions on a binary system of cassiterite and quartz. This and similar concepts using hydrophobic AFM probes have been applied by multiple authors (Rudolph and Peuker, 2014a; Rudolph and Peuker, 2014b; Wada et al., 2017; Xie et al., 2017). The hydrophobic interaction is the main interacting mechanism for the hydrophobic colloidal probe with hydrophobic sample surfaces and the long range attractive component has been accounted to nanobubbles on the interacting surfaces (Yakubov et al., 2000). More detailed information on nanobubbles are available in two reviews compiled by Attard and Hampton (Attard, 2003; Hampton and Nguyen, 2010). This paper is based on the work by Rudolph and Peuker comparing different AFM based measuring concepts, additionally gathering data with Raman spectroscopy and correlating results of microflotation and CPAFM measurements (Rudolph and Peuker, 2014a; Rudolph and Peuker, 2014b)."

Media losses are a significant contributor to the operational cost in a dense media separation (DMS) circuit. Of these losses, up to 80 wt% can occur on the drain and rinse vibrating screens. Although these screens are an integral part of any DMS circuit, surprisingly little work can be found in open literature regarding the effect of aperture configuration on the drain rates (draining water and medium). To establish the effect of slot aperture size, experiments were conducted on a 0.6 x 1.2 m vibrating screen with polyurethane (PU) panels at slurry densities between 1.6 – 2.8 kg/L, and volumetric flow rates of 19 – 25 m3/h for both ferrosilicon and magnetite. Results showed that an increase in the volumetric flow rate led to an increase in drainage rate, moisture content and medium carryover. Once an optimum volumetric flow rate was exceeded, a further increase in flow rate resulted in a decrease in drainage rate with a sharp increase in moisture and medium bypass to the oversize stream. An increase in ferrosilicon slurry density led to a decrease in drainage rate with an increase in moisture and medium bypass with each of these rates increasing as the slurry density increased. For magnetite, a gradual decrease in drainage rate was observed with increase in slurry density and volumetric flowrate beyond the screen optimum point. It was found that an increase in aperture size from 0.63 x 8.8 mm to 0.8 x 8.8 mm to 1.0 x 13 mm resulted in an increase in ferrosilicon drainage rate of between 1.3 - 1.8 m3/m2/h depending on the flow rate and slurry density with a reduction in moisture and medium carryover of between 1.0 – 1.2 % and 14.1 – 20.2 kg/t/m respectively. For magnetite, the drainage rate increased between 1.0 - 1.4 m3/m2/h as the slot width increased from 0.63 x 8.8 mm to 0.8 x 8.8 mm while an increase in slot length from 0.63 x 8.8 to 0.63 x 12 mm only resulted in an increase in drainage rate of 0.1 - 0.5 m3/m2/h.

The cohesive zone, where the ore fed into the blast furnace softens and melts, is critical to the blast furnace performance and stability due to its influence on the gas and solid flow. This paper de-scribes a project for the development of a process model to predict the cohesive zone properties and the results of its first step; the solid flow model. The process model is expected to describe a realistic solid burden flow and the formation of the cohesive zone, its shape, location, structure, permeability, and in particular the mineralogical changes within the cohesive zone. This will be achieved using various simulation and computing tools: a combination of the Discrete Element Method (DEM) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), the DEM?CFD hybrid approach, together with models for the thermodynamics and reaction kinetics. The key benefits of the hybrid approach lie in the coupling of the continuous phase and the discrete particles, and the possibility of introducing thermodynamics and reaction kinetics into the system in a more realistic manner. Two DEM simulations are presented for a small scale blast furnace to investigate the influence of non-spherical particles on the solid flow. This influence can be observed from a more even solid flow pattern and a reduced deadman size. The results indicate the requirement to include non- spherical particles in a blast furnace simulation to achieve a realistic solid flow.

Arsenic bearing copper-gold ores deposit have been found in most areas of China, especially in southwest. Due to the very closed association between arsenic, copper and gold, conventional flotation and cyanide leaching process may not give positive results. An arsenic bearing copper-gold ore in Sichuan province ,with gold grade of 10.12 g/t, 0.6% Cu and 0.14% As, is characterized by superfine grains with -40 microns fraction accounting for 70.9% and the gold enwrapped mainly by pyrite and tennanite accounts for 34.31%. Arsenic in this ore occurs in isomorphism, deposited in tetrahedrite. The ore was processed primarily in two stage flotation to get copper bearing gold concentrate and pyrite bearing gold concentrate respectively, and sequentially processed by leaching. Under the pressure of 300 KPa and 110~115 ?, the copper-gold concentrate was leached by an oxidizing and catalyzing leach agent then copper and gold were separated from each other in leach solution. The pyrite bearing gold concentrate was processed by cyanide leaching with the leach residue as sulfur product. The test results showed that copper recovery was up to 88.89%, gold recovery up to 89.18% and sulfur recovery up to 92.64%.

Extensive exploration for uranium metal by the Department of Atomic Energy in India led to the discovery of new carbonate host rock uranium deposits Tummalapalle and Gogi, which are located in southern part of India. Alkaline leaching at elevated temperature and pressure using autoclave is the central unit process in the overall strategy for extraction of uranium from these new ore deposits. Autoclave leaching is affected largely by intrinsic nature of the ore and by the process variables and the equipment settings. In order to understand such a complex process and also to be able to predict the process performance under randomly (ore grade, uranium mineralogy, gangue mineralogy etc.) and consciously perturbed variable settings (partial pressure of oxygen, temperature, concentration of leachant, stirring speed and time), sound and robust mathematical models are needed with analytical and/or numerical solutions. Present investigation attempts to develop a variant of kinetic correlation based on shrinking core model for batch alkaline leaching process in an autoclave. The leaching model incorporates particle size distribution according to popular Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann equation, rather than assuming a single mean size for all the particles participating in the leaching reaction. Kinetic experimental data generated in autoclave leaching of Gogi uranium ore was used to evaluate various constants of the model developed. The ore sample used for experiments assayed 0.21 per cent U3O8. The partial pressure of oxygen was varied between 0.15 to 6.5 atm, temperature from 343 K to 438 K, concentration of sodium carbonate leachant in the range 0.47 g mol/L to 0.94 g mol/L, and the stirring speed from 573 rev/min to 900 rev/min in the experiments. The goodness of fit of the leaching process model is found to be >0.95. Morphological studies carried out on leached and unleached particulate matter using Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X ray analyses are included in the present study.

Batch biosorption experiments were carried out for the bio-remediation of Cr (VI) ions from aqueous solutions using Serratia marcescens, a Gram negative, heterotroph and Gram positive bacterial isolates from a chromite mine. The influence of various experimental parameters such as contact time, pH, concentration of Cr (VI) ions and amount of biomass was evaluated with respect to the uptake of Cr (VI). The bio-sorption of Cr (VI) was found to be quite rapid and the percentage biosortion was found to increase with increase in the equilibrium chromium concentration. The free energy of biosorption of Cr (VI) was estimated to be in the range of -23 to -25 kJ/mol for the chosen bacteria. The uptake of chromium by the bacteria was confirmed by EDX and FTIR spectroscopy. As a follow up of this study, bacterial strains resistant to hexavalent chromium were isolated from a chromite mine in Karnataka, India and identified as Arthrobacter sp., Micrococcus sp. and Exiguobacterium sp. using 16s rRNA sequencing. The efficacy of the bacterial isolates for Cr (VI) uptake was assessed and over 90% bioremoval could be achieved for Serratia marcescens and Micrococcus sp. isolate. "In this investigation, a pilot-scale suspension magnetization roasting reactor was introduced and used to enhance magnetic properties of an iron ore. Consequently, the effects of roasting temperature, reducing gas CO flow rate and fluidizing gas N2 flow rate on the magnetization roasting performance were investigated. The results indicate that the hematite and siderite are almost completely converted into magnetite by a gas mixture of 3.5 Nm3/h CO and 2 Nm3/h N2 at roasting temperature of 520 °C. Under the optimized conditions, the magnetic iron concentrate with an iron grade of 60.18% and iron recovery of 90.17% was achieved. The XRD and Fe mineral phase analyses revealed that most of the hematite and siderite were converted to magnetite, and the magnetic properties were greatly enhanced. INTRODUCTION The steel and iron industry in China has rapidly developed in recent years requiring a large quantity of iron ores. Low-grade and complex iron ores are currently the overwhelmingly dominant mineral resource for iron in China. Therefore, China depends on imported iron ore resources heavily, resulting in an increase in the production costs of iron-making and steel-making[1-3]. Using domestic resources to produce a steady supply of high-quality iron ores is an important step toward the sustainable development of the steel and iron industry[4-5]. The iron ore from Jiuquan iron and steel company is abundant and recognized as typically complex iron ore resources in China. Magnetization roasting followed by low-intensity magnetic separation has been proven as the most feasible methods to upgrade refractory iron ore[6-10]. In present research, an innovative roasting technology, namely suspension magnetization roasting, was developed and applied to recover iron from a typical refractory iron ore. Suspension magnetization roasting technique and equipment developed by Prof. Yuexin Han’s Group at Northeastern University (NEU) is an effective way for the utilization of refractory iron ore. The advent of suspension magnetization roasting will, in China and even globally, produce a significant technological revolution in the field of iron ore beneficiation. Based on the previous works, this paper mainly described experiments on the separation and recovery of iron from a complex refractory iron ore by means of suspension magnetizing roasting and low-intensity magnetic separation processes. The purpose of the research is providing a new technology for effective utilization of refractory iron ore. Process parameters that affected the separation and recovery rate of iron were conducted and optimized, and the reaction process was analyzed by XRD and Fe mineral phase analysis."

According to the unique properties and many applications of nano gold powder, it was prepared from an acid leaching tail solution. The low value residual gold ions were existed in acid leaching tail solution in Mouteh gold mine in Iran with fellow heavy metals as pollutants (FeP2+P, Cu P2+P, and ZnP2+P). Preparation of nano gold particles is achieved by two steps. First, by addition of ammonia as separation step and second using suitable reagents for precipitation/extraction step. Conditions control includes pH, residence time, temperature, agitation, and molar ratio of reducing agents to reagents. The optimum results show that nano gold powder was prepared by temperature of 250 °C, urea to gold molar ratio of 3:1, and reduction time of 20 min. Also, heat treatment improves dispersion of nano sized gold particles. The properties of gold nano powders were evaluated by SEM, A.A, and UV- Vis spectroscopy methods. The size of prepared particles were about 80nm to 90nm.

Research and Development Centre for Iron and Steel (RDCIS) a unit of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is continuously engaged in reduction of energy consumption at SAIL plants by implementing innovative and new concepts. In this regard, continuous efforts are being made to recover waste heat in Sinter Plants. This paper discusses existing waste heat recovery measures taken and proposed measures planned in Sinter Plants. One such effort is on waste heat recovery from sinter coolers. Hot sinter is discharged to the crusher at the end of the sinter machine at a temperature of 500 to 800°C. Temperature of hot sinter is brought down to nearly 100°C in the sinter cooler with air-cooling. The air after cooling the sinter is generally discharged to the atmosphere at about 225 to 300°C. It is planned to recover heat from the hot air that is being released to atmosphere and heat the process water, which is being added at ambient temperature in mixing drum at Bhilai Steel Plant. The temperature of raw sinter mix will be raised by addition of this hot water, which will help in improving the productivity of sinter machine. It is estimated that Waste heat recovery to the tune of 1.5 to 2.0 Gcal/h is possible with reduction in CO2 emissions in the range of 4000 to 5000 ton/year. The novel approach that is being adopted is addition of hot water in mixing drum for higher sinter productivity for the first time in India. In the Borborema Pegmatitic Province (Brazil) exploitations of several minerals are conducted by small producers. They use traditional techniques of gravity concentration in small-scale plants as jigs and vibratory tables. During decades the mining activity generated tailings with economic interest in particularly columbite-tantalite. Samples collected in tailing piles of a gravity plant were characterized in mineral composition, which shows in the heavy fraction the minerals spodumene, columbite-tantalite, ilmeno-hematite, garnet and cassiterite. The light fraction presents quartz, feldspar and muscovite. The degree of liberation of spodumene and columbite-tantalite were determined using optical microscopy that presents liberation in 100 µm (90% to columbite-tantalite and 100% to spodumene). Centrifugal concentrator Falcon SB-40 was used for concentration of these minerals and presents 65% recovery in mass to two stages with mass reduction about 85%.

Fly-ash was used as adsorbent to remove butyl xanthate from aqueous solution in this study. Adsorption kinetics investigation reveals that the adsorption process abides by the Lagergren-second-order Kinetic Model, and fine fly-ash prepared by grinding has a higher second-order adsorption rate as 1.25 g/mg?min and a higher saturated adsorption amount as 10.92mg/g. Four influencing factors as adsorption temperature, solution pH, consumption of fly-ash and adsorption time were investigated. Testing results indicate that butyl xanthate removal rates declines slightly with the temperature increase within the range of 15-50?, increases slightly when pH rises from 7.27 to 8.01 and then declines from 99.65% to 98.25% when pH rises from 8.01 to 11.10. An enhancement of removal rates can be observed by increasing the consumption of the adsorbing agent or prolonging the adsorption time. Thermal desorption was adopted to regenerate the used fly-ash, and test results show that fly-ash possess good regeneration performance and could be used as adsorbent repeatedly with little influence on the adsorption capacity.

Cone crushers are used in the mineral, mining, and aggregate industry for fragmentation of rock materials. Control systems for cone crusher settings are widely used to compensate for wear and to protect the machines. The eccentric speed in a cone crusher affects the number of compressions the material is exposed to and thus the particle size distribution of the product. Eccentric speed also affects crusher capacity. However, the speed of the crusher is mostly fixed, because speed changes must be made by shifting pulleys, a process which is quite time-consuming. By applying a frequency converter, which has decreased in cost during recent years, it has become possible to adjust the speed continuously. By also applying mass-flow sensors to the process, the crusher can be run optimally to yield the most sellable products in a given moment. Existing systems normally only protect the machine. The sensors can be mass-flow meters, e.g., conveyor-belt scales. To analyze data from the process and calculate the appropriate value for the speed, an algorithm has been developed. The developed algorithm was tested and evolved at a crushing plant for aggregates that produces around 350 kton a year. The algorithm was implemented in a computer that could communicate with the frequency controller, retrieve data from four mass-flow meters, and also interact with the opera-tor. The computer was reachable over the Internet for the researchers at Chalmers and the algorithm was tuned and improved on-line. The result is a crushing stage that consistently and maximally produces the most desirable product. The performance (yield of required products) increased by 4%. As a bonus, the lifetime of the mantles increased 27% on the evaluated crusher.

Considering the main idea of the paper, namely that the interaction energy of reagents serves as a criterion used for their selection, as well as due to their insufficient study, the authors have therefore considered studying the aspects of computer modelling and molecular dynamics of largely used collectors for the flotation of nonferrous and precious metal ores. Three-dimensional molecular models for sulphydric reagents have been created, studying as well the distribution of the partial charges on their atoms. It has been shown that the value of the partial charge on the phosphorus atom in diethyldithiophosphinate and diethylmonothiophosphinate is high positive. The value of the partial charge of the sulphur atom is negative, strengthening its bond with the metal cations from the mineral surface. The molecular orbitals for the sulphydric reagents have been created determining as well the energy of their level. The computer modelling key parameters have therefore been defined. The new reagents have been tested for gold, copper and rhenium ore flotation. Gold recovery has increased with 4.2 - 4.7 %, copper recovery with 3.3 % and rhenium recovery with 15.5 %. A number of new flotation reagents have been recommended, such as: diethyldithiophosphate, (C2H5)2NCH2CH2OC(S)SNa, (C4H9NH)2P (S)SNa and also (C2H5)2P(S)ONa and (C2H5)2 P(O)S Na. Fine and ultrafine mineral particles, particularly if, altered mineralogically, can have detrimental effects on selective separation of minerals. Behaviour of altered mineral fines has been investigated in this work by studying the effects of weathered silicate slimes on the selective separation of copper minerals, particularly with focues on effect of the pulp rheological behaviour, which plays a governing role in the process. Physicochemical properties of these altered silicates fines such as morphology and surface charge are proposed to be responsible for the adverse rheological effects and resultant selective separation. Here, the effect of a number of problematic aspects such as water chemistry, froth stability, physicochemical aspects of gangue mineral aggregates on flotation sub-processes has been studied. Processing problems owing to the physical aspects of the gangue minerals, shape and morphology, are primarily due to uncharacteristic increase in the pulp viscosity. While problematic aspects other than impact of pulp rheological behaviour can interfere with each other in their contributions to how they affect the sub-processes, effects owing to pulp rheological behaviour have a direct impact on the flotation performance. Subtle increase in pulp viscosity can interfere with sub-processes in flotation leading to decrease in recovery and grade, and it is difficult to assess the effects due to such subtle changes. Reagent based strategies to overcome the problematic aspects has been explored here.

"The development of the Minnovex SAG Power Index (SPI) Test in Canada has created a new and accurate way to measure ore hardness in a SAG environment. Coupled with the standard Bond Ball Mill Work Index Test it is now possible to determine from these two relatively inexpensive laboratory tests, the amount of energy required to grind an ore from the primary crushed size to the desired liberation size. By testing multiple samples to discover where the hard and soft ore zones are located, the representative hardness distribution for the ore body can be determined and grinding equipment selected that is capable to meet production targets for all mining areas of the deposit.In the last century, it was deemed prudent to select up to 50-tonne samples of ore for Semi Autogenous Grinding (SAG) pilot plant tests and a second 5-tonne sample for metallurgical pilot plant work. The methods outlined in this paper show how the 50-tonne sample is no longer required for SAG design because it is better to measure the representative hardness distribution of the ore body than the hardness of a “chosen” representative sample. This is demonstrated to be true by the fact that the lower horizons of an ore zone cannot initially be accessed to recover 150mm pieces, and the bulk samples taken, rarely represent the desired design hardness of the ore. Median hardness will not yield a good result in most cases and a clear understanding of the location and extent of the hardest zones is imperative to achieve a truly successful grinding circuit design.This paper discusses two plants (Kubaka and Agnico Eagle) that have been designed using SPI and Bond with no pilot plant test backup. Both have been very successful in that they can grind design tonnage on the hardest ores in the mine. This guarantees that the mine’s profitability is protected in any mining sequence. It also allows the extra power to be converted to higher throughput on softer ores if additional cash flow is needed. The advantages from the owner’s point of view are dramatic. This procedure will be attractive as well when considering the costs for test work, and the samples for testing. Existing diamond drill core is normally used and this allows the inclusion of data from the deepest regions of the mine. In addition, it is also clear that the decision to use a crusher can now be made at the design stage of a project based on measured parameters and the estimated capital costs of alternative designs."

Industrially proven and applied nitrogen species catalyzed (i.e. NSC) acidic pressure leaching has been utilized to treat a number of ores, concentrates and recycled materials. This versatile technology offers many advantages including low temperatures, low pressures, low capital costs, low operating costs, faster throughput and less costly materials of construction than conventional pressure oxidation. This paper will elucidate the application of this technology for production of gold, silver, palladium, rhodium, zinc, germanium, gallium, cobalt, copper, molybdenum, rhenium and nickel. Recycled material applications will also be elucidated. In addition, details of an application for treatment of a refractory chalcopyrite copper and gold bearing ore will be presented and pertinent economics discussed.

"IsaMill™ has been in operation in the recent past for fine grinding of low grade ores to extract non-ferrous minerals. IsaMill™, typically, consists of a series of uniformly spaced identical disks mounted on a rotating shaft which is encased in an outer shell. The mill offers high energy efficiency for fine grinding and an inherent scalability. But, it encounters certain operational challenges such as non-uniform distribution of grinding media coupled with high wear rate of the disks and solid walls of the mill at specific locations—which adversely affect the mill performance. To circumvent these operational challenges, design modification of the disks through heuristics, by introducing a reduced diameter disk (RDD) at specific locations, is a common practice in industry. But there is no systematic scientific study in this regard. In the current work, we developed a discrete element method (DEM) based model and simulated for the IsaMill™ operation to study the effect of RDD on the efficiency of the mill and wear rate of the solid walls and disks. Since the first set of disks experience the high wear rate due to the high loading of the charge, the RDD was introduced at the first two disks. The simulations were performed at different diameters of the RDDs and at different media loadings. The performance of the mill was analyzed based on the power consumption, the wear rate on disks and the distribution of media particles inside the mill. Besides, the performance variables such as mean velocity of media particles and total impact energy provided useful insights into the milling operation. It was observed that the reduction in disk diameter yields lower wear rate of the disks at the cost of decrease in power draw at a constant high media loading. Whereas, when the media loading was decreased, the amount of wear and power drawn was comparable for both the most reduced and least reduced disk diameters. In this paper, various methods, such as XPS, XRD, SEM and zeta potential measurement are applied to investigate the action mechanism of sodium sulfide in flotation of lead and zinc oxysalt minerals. The experimental results show that the mechanisms of sodium sulfide in flotation of lead oxysalt minerals and zinc oxysalt minerals are different: on the surface of cerusite, there is lead sulfide phase formed under the reaction of sodium sulfide, resulting that the cerusite surface shows the form of galena, which is advantageous to the adsorption of anion collector and improves the floatability of cerusite as a result. On the surface of zinc oxysalt minerals, there is no zinc sulfide phase formed, but the sodium sulfide increases its surface electronegativity, and enhances the adsorption of cation collector lauryl amine, so the floatability of zinc oxysalt minerals is improved. The difference of action mechanisms of sodium sulfide on lead and zinc oxysalt minerals exactly explains the reason why different collectors are selected in the flotation of cerusite and smithsonite, which are both carbonate minerals although.
