Introduction Very little fundamental research has been done on asbestos fibre to cake maximum advantage of its properties and to determine in what commercial products it can best be utilized. For the research chemist who is associated with asbestos development work, a thorough study of mineralogical information on asbestos deposits would furnish reliable information on the rock formations and the mineral impurities closely associated with the asbestos. Furthermore, ?he must have an intimate knowledge of the uses of the fibre in various products so that he can visualize the importance of the fibre and the role it plays in industry. Some of the properties of asbestos fibres such as strength, composition, length, harshness or softness, and mineral associates are of considerable importance to the manufacturer because they are responsible for many production difficulties. Fibre Strength It has been known for some time chat asbestos filaments have considerable tensile strength. These strengths have been referred to merely as 'weak' to 'very strong'. Not until recently have numerical values been applied to the strengths of asbestos fibres. But today we can take a thin fibre filament and mount it between two holders and apply a gradually increasing load or pull until the fibre breaks. By measuring the cross sectional area of the filament and the amount of load applied, we can calculate the tensile strength of the fibre in terms of pounds per square inch. This type of test is slow and rather difficult, but the fundamental data obtained furnish important basic information that can be applied to mechanical processing equipment and to certain asbestos products.

Western Canada is defined, for the purposes of this paper, as that part of the Dominion bounded approximately by the 95th and 141st meridians of longitude and the 49th and 80th parallels of latitude. It is comprised of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon, and that portion of the Northwest Territories lying to the west of the 95th. meridian. The first magnetic observations made in Western Canada were in the interests of navigation by sea. Observations were made by Captain Middleton in Hudson bay at Churchill and York Factory in 1725, and along the Pacific coast by Captain Cook in 1778 and Captain Vancouver in 1792. The first systematic magnetic survey in Western Canada was made between 1819 and 1826 by Sir John Franklin in his widely distributed explorations. It is of interest to find that while the first magnetic declination observations made in Hudson bay and along the Pacific coast were purely in the interests of navigation, the next investigations, which were made in the Western Arctic, included measurements of inclination and force with those of declination. There was a valid reason for this more complete research into the magnetic field as the construction of declination charts depended on the position of the north magnetic pole. Halley promulgated a theory 1683 that " the globe of the Earth may be regarded as one great magnet, having four magnetic poles, two of them near each pole of the equator, and that in those parts of the world which lie near any of those magnetic poles the needle is chiefly governed thereby, the nearest pole being always predominate over the more remote" . The position of a magnetic pole may be defined as a point where the inclination is 90 degrees and the horizontal force zero. It is obvious that the position cannot be' defined by declination observations alone since, for some distance from the magnetic pole, .the horizontal force is too weak to give directive force sufficient to effect the pointing of a compass.

The Canadian mining industry needs to find viable alternatives to the conventional cemented pastefill/hydraulic methods of backfilling open stopes for underground mines located within a permafrost zone. The harsh environment and the isolated location of a mine north of 60° impose additional challenges to standard backfill methods and opportunities to the technological and operational issues related to the use of frozen fill. Underground open stoping mining methods require the placement of fill material to enable the controlled recovery of ore from secondary and tertiary stopes. The typical design of the fill material requires the specification of inert material, water and binder. The permafrost conditions provide the additional parameter of subzero temperatures for backfill design and process control. The paper presents the results of an experimental field study, using large size samples, to determine the strength capacity of frozen backfill. The experimental work was performed utilizing rockfill and tailings material with moisture content consisting of water and ice crystals. Preliminary results indicate that the mixture of rockfill, tailings and moisture, develops strength that meet the demanded requirements for open stoping. A thermal equilibrium modelling analysis is presented in the paper.

The mining industry has been put under closer scrutiny in recent years, which has led to the adoption of a plethora of initiatives in countries around the world and by international organizations, some voluntary and others mandatory, governing economic, ethical, social and environmental practices of this industry. In order to plan appropriately, secure project financing, build value and manage risks, it is imperative to identify and understand the application of this new and evolving regime, which can be described under the general label of corporate social responsibility (?CSR?) law, and to incorporate compliance policies into the day-to-day operations of mining companies. Our paper and presentation will describe this new legal framework, which includes both ?soft? law and ?hard? law adopted at the international and domestic level that governs the actions of mining companies, particularly when operating in developing countries. While the notions of hard and soft law may seem abstract and grounded in legal theory, this paper shall demonstrate how these concepts concretely apply to companies in general, and to mining companies in particular. An analysis of the recent case law in this area as well as examples of corporate ?best practices? will illustrate the application of this body of law. As will be demonstrated through the case law, non-compliance of CSR law (both ?soft? law and ?hard? law) can lead to economic penalties, difficulties in accessing capital, loss of social licenses and even the withdrawal of permits and concessions. This confirms that now more than ever, ethics and sustainable practices in mining are fundamental to building a successful business model.

"Current business and corporate environments push for improving metal accounting practices in smelters. The ensuing projects commonly proceed along a bottom-up approach. As such, efforts are first put on reviewing the measurement system and then on remedying the identified weaknesses. The focus is thus moved to mass/metal balance only after the measurements upgrade process has been completed. However, practice has shown that assessing the high variances related to suboptimal measurement processes is complicated without the help of statistical data reconciliation. This bottom-up approach leads to a to-do list that can not only exceed available resources but also lack prioritization in view of achieving the targeted end use. This paper describes an upgrade project done differently where all the three dimensions of the metal accounting system: hardware, software, and people were instead involved at the onset. Personnel was thus trained on data reconciliation software at the beginning of the project to make the reconciled mass balance benefits available earlier in the upgrading project. This has pinpointed the most critical measurements where accuracy and reproducibility should be improved. Overall, not only the instrumentation retrofitting process has been streamlined, but the global risk for the whole upgrading project has been significantly lowered.INTRODUCTION Mining companies are pressured to improve their production accounting practices in response to the strengthening of corporate requirements for timely and accurate production reporting (Gaylard, Randolph, & Wortley, 2014). Smelters are not spared from these changes. However, their unique situation in the mining value chain set them as strategic targets for upgrading projects. They usually have a longer lifespan than concentrators thereby offering an extended lifecycle to justify investments. Furthermore, numerous smelters have toll agreements with third parties. Accurate cost and production accounting is, therefore, a vital piece of information to fix acceptable contract conditions. Mining companies are ultimately aiming at a clearer view of the operating performance of each business unit to improve their business decisions in a competitive environment. This sought for increase in visibility through plant performance can only be achieved through an upgrade of the metal accounting system. Figure 1 shows the different components of a state of the art system (Gaylard, Morrison, Randolph, Wortley, & Beck, 2009)."

The Shortage of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers I N many parts of the Western World attention has recently been drawn to the acute shortage of mining and metallurgical engineers produced by the universities. Naturally, the reasons for this shortage have been discussed, and various remedies for it have been proposed. In this paper, I want to examine some of them. It is now fairly generally ac-cepted among mining men that the easy attractions of modern urban life have left the career of mining in the metaphorical as well as in the literal backwoods. The industry finds it increasingly difficult to recruit adventurous and intelligent young men; for such men now seek their intellectual, if not physical, adventure in more glamorous occupations from a safe social base in suburbia. The salaries, opportunities and security offered by the mining industry do not complete effectively with the rewards offered by other industries and by commerce, taking into account the social disadvantages of a mining life. "Palabora Mining Copper has a unique ore body composition which unlike other copper ore bodies has three main components in significant proportions; these are copper bearing ore, magnetite and dolerite. The high content of dolerite, a hard barren material, creates a high proportion of pebbles which normally are recycled back to the mill. This action increases the mill bearing pressure and power progressively until corrective actions are taken.A logical action to solve the pebbles generation would be to incorporate a pebble crusher. This in fact was done however two fundamental issues were encountered; the high content of magnetite and existence of a cyclone classification section. Due to the high content of magnetite, metal detectors have not been able to work efficiently to separate tramp metal which causes damage to the pebble crushers. The existence of cyclones in the circuit had a detrimental effect on the final product when the pebbles crusher was online producing coarse sandy material.Due to the difficulties in treating pebbles via conventional procedures and the unique Palabora ore composition and characteristics, sorting technology was investigated at laboratory and pilot scale. It was found that a combination of optical and electromagnetic sorting could efficiently separate dolerite from the copper bearing and magnetite ores.This paper reports the findings of the laboratory and pilot scale work performed and discusses the additional benefits to the circuit."

What is a Failed Project? For mining projects, some key indicators of a ?failed? project are: ? Cost is more than it should be (particularly capital) ? Schedule ? Part 1 Originally, the copper produced at the Noranda ?smelter was shipped in the form of blister bars to the Laurel Hill refinery of the Nichols Copper Co., New York. In 1930 a refinery was built at Montreal East for the purpose of refining Noranda copper and copper from the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., at Flin Flon. After investigation of the probable costs of making anodes at Noranda and at Montreal, it was decided to make them at Noranda rather than to continue to make blister bars there. Fuel is a major item of expense in making anodes: and since less fuel would be required in making anodes from molten copper than in making them from blister bars, a lower anode furnace cost could be expected at Noranda than at Montreal. Further, the expense connected with making blister bars at Noranda would be eliminated. The cost of treating anode and wire bar furnace slags is a serious item in a refinery, and it was found that the cheapest method would be to ship such slags back to Noranda. With the anode furnace at Noranda, much less anode furnace slag would be made at the refinery. Against these savings which would be effected by making anodes at Noranda must be set the high operating cost of an anode furnace at Montreal, using only tank-room scrap and the Flin Flon copper. This furnace would be handling a comparatively small tonnage and would have a high cost per ton. The usual equipment for making anodes from. liquid copper consists of either a stationary reverberatory furnace or a tilting Tacoma-type furnace together with an anode wheel of the Clark or Walker type. The reverberatory type of furnace has been developed from the furnace used in the old Welsh process of smelting and refining copper, while the tilting furnace is a development of the holding furnace, which is essentially a Peirce Smith converter without tuyeres and provided with burners.

In this work the extractive and selective capacities of solvent extraction synergistic systems to recover nickel and cobalt were evaluated. The liquor used was from the high pressure acid leaching process (HPAL). Initially the industrial liquor, processed from lateritic ores, was analyzed to identify the concentrations of the metals. Experiments of synergistic solvent extraction were performed later. The extraction liquid-liquid was carried out with a mixture of Cyanex 272 (CY) and Ionquest 290 (IQ) extractants. The process was executed with the temperature of 65 ºC, pH of 5.2 and the ratio aqueousorganic 2:1. Systems of 80% kerosene and CY 20%, CY 16% - IQ 4%, CY 12% - IQ 8%, CY 8% - IQ 16%, CY 4% - IQ 16%, IQ 20% were studied during 20 minutes. The results of this paper showed that the mixture of these two extractants doesn’t improve significantly the recovery of nickel and cobalt from liquor.

"Future open pit metallurgical coal mines in western Canada will be developed in complex geological environments. The success of these operations will be influenced by the mine operators' ability to prepare accurate mine plans and to predict and, subsequently, 10 control both out-of-seam dilution and coal recovery. Quintette Coal Limited has been mining its tightly folded and severely faulted Mesa depo sit at annual rates of up to 9 Mt of raw coal, since October 1982. Ongoing development drilling combined with continuous utilization of blast hole information, has been required to achieve an acceptable geological data base for short range mine planning. Thrust faulting has been a primary geological cause of difficulty in selectively mining waste and coal, which has resulted in higher than expected dilution in plant feed. The same geological phenomenon has also increased reserves by 6.3% and allowed for expanded mine plans to include a lower thrust plate, ultimately doubling the mines original reserve base. This paper illustrates the geology of the Mesa deposit and the type of work involved in its interpretation. Regional GeologyThe Quintette Coal Limited (QCL) property is located in the Peace River Coal Field of northeastern British Columbia. In this area, northwesterly-trending folds of the Rocky Mountain foothills are commonly cut by multiple, low-angle thrust faults, which dip to the southwest. The Lower Cretaceous Gates Formation, of near shore continental origin, contains 5 to 7 mineable seams of medium volatile bituminous metallurgical coal (Figs. I and 2). These seams normally range in thickness between 0.75 m and 9.5 m and have an aggregate thickness of between 15 m and 22 m."

"This presentation will provide information and facts on the drilling and blasting within a frozen shaft using a full face methodology. The Author will briefly discuss the history of the sinking of a frozen shaft in Saskatchewan, the challenges faced, and the solutions delivered. The case study will include a discussion describing the series of events that led to the decision to adopt a full face blasting methodology. The case study will describe key elements such as the drilling pattern, hole size and depth, explosive products and blast vibration monitoring systems. INTRODUCTION During the shaft sinking process at a project in Saskatchewan, it was recommended that a drill & blast benching method be utilized. Following an evaluation of the site, the geological conditions proved amenable to a ground freezing system that would stabilize the rock formations and prevent inflows of water into the shaft (Table 1).The shaft sinking process required that the ground surrounding the proposed shaft be frozen by drilling several near vertical freeze holes radially at a specified distance from the edge of the proposed shaft excavation. This would allow for the circulation of a chilled brine solution down the freeze holes. The circulation is achieved by means of stainless steel pipes encased within each other to provide a delivery and return conduit for the brine (Figure 1). As a result of this periphery freezing, the ground within the shaft excavation is also predominately frozen.The finished internal diameter of the shaft was 5.5 meters with varying overall excavation diameters to facilitate different liner designs used for various rock formations. For the most part, the fully unsupported/unfinished excavated diameter of the shaft varied from 6.9 meters to 8.5 meters depending on the zone excavated. The challenge was that the proposed drill and blast excavation method posed a significant risk due to the potential to damage the freeze wall and pipes during blasting. The decision was made to commence the excavation through mechanical excavation (i.e. chip and cut) methods then change to a drill and blast method utilizing a split benching design. Through this process, the team encountered five main challenges: 1. Sub-horizontal geological structures and slips that affected blasting performance and sometimes resulted in a sloping surface to the top of the bench; 2. Confined working area for the crews and equipment due to a limited work area as a result of utilizing the split (half) bench drill and blast methodology; 3. Mechanical chipping and cutting of the one-meter buffer zone to the final shaft diameter; 4. Crews working on extremely slippery uneven frozen rock and ice surfaces, which affected safety and efficiency; 5. Establishing a blast vibration monitoring system to determine if the drilling and blasting of the full shaft excavation diameter were acceptable."

There have recently been executives at major metals companies who have recommended that Greenfield Projects not be pursued. Greenfield includes not only new geographical locations, but also new technologies and new types of feed materials. In the middle part of the 20th Century, two such projects were successfully commercialized to recover nickel from Cuban lateritic ores. One project (at Nicaro) used the Caron ammonia-ammonium carbonate leach and the other (at Moa Bay) a high pressure acid leach. How both of these projects dealt with these Greenfield issues will be reviewed, based on the original reports that described the research and development of the plants. This study will include a review of the critical ore characterization and sorting issues, as well as the extractive metallurgical, product recovery and equipment selection and sizing problems and how they were solved at each stage of project development, from laboratory through one or more pilot scale plants to start up and operation. In one case, a major revision of the plant was made after several years of operation to correct operating, equipment selection and materials of construction problems that hindered economical operation. These descriptions will provide a guide through the complicated and critical issues that in recent times have caused many companies to give up on similar development. Even with the more advanced analytical and computational tools available to today’s mineralogists, engineers and metallurgists, the basic concepts with which these projects successfully addressed their sets of problems are still required. In addition, upper management, now perhaps further removed from hands-on experience than was common then, will see how complicated problems require intense and detailed effort to avoid failure in the field and capital blowouts. Build it and we will make it run, kicking the can down the road and borrowing operating and design concepts incorrectly on technological issues, or nine year olds on a sugar high making financial decisions are not philosophies by which to succeed with Greenfield Projects.

Shaft sinking through solid rock, which contains little or no water, poses little difficulty. However, when loose, water-bearing strata have to be contended with, water control measures, and pumping facilities are needed. Shaft sinking in Athabasca Basin requires sinking through water bearing sandstone which can be highly fractured. Intersection of local zones of extensive fracturing results in the potential for high water inflows with pressures up to 5 Mpa. Grouting is carried out ahead of each shaft sinking interval as water control strategy. In the grouting method, liquid cement is forced into the water-bearing earth under very high pressure. Shaft sinking performance which can be quantified in terms of rate of advance is highly dependent on the days spent at each interval grouting before sinking can advance to the next interval. This paper presents the shaft sinking experience in Athabasca basin and how some of this is translated into Geoscientific Investigations for Future Shafts. A comparison of Geoscientific data collected from future shafts at McArthur River and Millennium Mines is compared to historical data collected from pilot holes, where shafts have already been sunk. The paper concludes with the strategies for better integration of hydrogeological, geotechnical and geophysical data.

The method is particularly useful for the valuation of early-stage exploration properties. Unfortunately, valuators are sometimes imprecise in distinguishing between joint ventures and other types of transactions.At VALMIN '94, Bob Appleyard1 proposed that, if one ignores the time value of money and the probability that the expenditure commitment would be completed, the formula to calculate the value ($V) of a property owned by Party B at the time of the deal would be:$V =$Ex (100-1%)/1% (Formula I)Where $V is the value of the property2Where $E is the expenditure commitment by Party A, andWhere 1% is the percentage property interest to be earned by party A.At PACRIM '99, Mike Lawrence and Graham Dewar3 referred to this method and suggested that there was an ambiguity in the formula proposed by Appleyard in 1994. Mike Lawrence referred to this problem again at VALMIN '014•Lawrence & Dewar suggested that the formulashould be:$V100% =($Ell%) x 100 (Formula 2)Where $V 100% is the value of the entire property,Where $E is the expenditure commitment by Party B, andWhere 1% is the percentage property interest to be earned by Party B.Subsequently, there has been considerable discussion in the AuslMM Bulletin5. In my view, this discussion has touched on a number of useful points, but generally has overlooked one essential element needed for an understanding of the correct application of the N Terms method. That essential element is to understand that there is a material difference between (1) entering into a joint venture arrangement and (2) the purchase of an interest in a property."

Therefore, with such a variety of energy sources to choose from, why was coal selected as the primary fuel at Calgary Power's Wabamun steam plant? This part of the paper will cover the circumstances that led the Company to decide in favour of coal. The second part, to be presented by C. F. Doerr, will describe how the Wabamun coal mine has been developed to supply the large fuel requirements of the power plant. Before considering the Wabamun plant, we require a general under-standing of? the Company's electric system and load. Power is fed into a 5,100-mile high-voltage transmission grid from eleven hydroelectric plants and from the Wabamun steam electric plant.
